Based on differences in hemipenial morphology we recognize two species of anoles related to Anolis polylepis: Anolis polylepis (Pacific versant of central and southern Costa Rica and western Panama, excluding the Osa Peninsula) and a species described herein which is restricted to the Osa Peninsula. The two species differ in hemipenial morphology (hemipenis bilobed in A. polylepis versus unilobed in the species from the Osa Peninsula) but show no discernable differences in external morphology (i.e., morphometrics, scalation, coloration, male dewlap). We therefore consider them to be cryptic species. At the neck of the Osa Peninsula where the ranges of the two species meet we detected a narrow (about 1 km wide) hybridization zone in which only individuals with an intermediate hemipenial morphology occur.

Calathea hylaeanthoides Kennedy, Calathea retroflexa Kennedy, and Calathea incompta Kennedy are described as new. All three species are endemic to Costa Rica. Calathea hylaeanthoides and C. incompta are from the Osa Peninsula, while C. retroflexa is from midelevation on the Pacific slope of the Cordillera de Talamanca. Calathea hylaeanthoides belongs to Calathea section Breviscapus, C. retroflexa belongs to Calathea section Calathea, and C. incompta belongs to the "Ornata group" of Calathea. We studied movements of white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari, Artiodactyla, Tayassuidae) throughout the Osa Peninsula and their use by local people during 1997–2000, using interview techniques. We draw five main conclusions: 1) White-lipped peccaries living on the Osa Peninsula range within Corcovado National Park for most of the year. 2) Peccaries travel beyond the Park boundaries to the north and south-east of the Peninsula at the end of the wet season when a fruit shortage occurs in Corcovado. 3) The local people hunt peccaries as the herds move through the Peninsula. 4) Current small herd sizes observed by locals in the Peninsula and by researchers in the Park may indicate a decline of the peccary population. 5) Peccaries constitute neither an important source of food nor a source of cash income for local people. We suggest that sustainable use of peccaries in this region is neither realistic nor necessary. Instead of trying to legalize and regulate hunting, effective systems to control illegal hunting should be implemented, especially outside the Park boundary from October to January when the animals are on the move.

An identification key is provided to the genera of the Cryptobatida Group and additional keys are provided for those genera with more than one species occurring in Costa Rica. Distribution data is provided for all species including their known occurrence outside of Costa Rica in adjacent Panam and Nicaragua, and other countries. Adults of species of Aspasiola, Cryptobatis, Otoglossa and Hyboptera are known to occur on shelf fungi on rotting logs and have also been fogged from the canopy of tropical trees (which probably contained shelf fungi on dead branches); adults of species of Cylindronotum, Onota, Pseudotoglossa, Valeriaaschero have also been fogged from the canopy of tropical trees and likely adults of Onota and Pseudotoglossa collected from rotten logs were associated with fungi.

Habitat modification is the primary cause of amphibian population declines worldwide. Some species survive in modified habitats whereas others become restricted to small, isolated forest patches. Although many studies compare species richness and composition between modified and intact habitats, the factors and mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in these landscapes are poorly understood. I asked how life history traits and habitat features influence interspecific variation in frog occupancy patterns in tropical pasture and forest. To identify mechanisms underlying occupancy patterns, I used experiments to examine how abiotic conditions in different habitats influence the vital rates of tadpoles. I also explored whether tadpoles use a carnivorous foraging strategy to improve performance in nutrient-poor, ephemeral pools in pasture. Although modified and intact habitats offer abiotic environments that differ in quality for frogs, pastures contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity in fragmented landscapes. I detected an equal number of species but substantially different assemblage composition in forest and pasture. Species that occurred in pasture had different traits than those in forest, including larger body sizes, larger clutch sizes, larger geographic ranges, and reproductive modes that depend on water. The occurrence of pasture-specialists was associated with habitat features at small spatial scales, whereas the occurrence of forest-specialists was associated with habitat features at small and large spatial scales. An experiment indicated that abiotic conditions in pastures may deter or facilitate adult movements to breeding sites. Behavioral selection of sites by two model species was consistent with tadpole performance. Tadpoles of a pasture-specialist performed well across the pasture-forest gradient, but abiotic conditions in pasture facilitated faster growth and development than in edge or forest. In contrast, tadpoles of a forest-specialist performed well only in edge and forest. Most tadpoles occupying ephemeral pasture pools were facultative carnivores or cannibals of eggs and hatchlings. Tadpoles may contribute to the regulation of assemblages in pasture pools, influencing the relative abundance and composition of species through differential predation on eggs and hatchlings. The study of factors and mechanisms that contribute to population growth or decline of species can facilitate understanding of assemblage-level patterns of amphibian diversity in modified landscapes.

The effect of land-use on nutrient cycles of tropical streams on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica: a paired catchment approach to investigate current conditions and projected changes. Kelly N. Bringhurst Abstract This study is concerned with potential environmental degradation of soils, rivers and coastal regions of the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica due to deforestation. A paired, small-catchment approach to the study of environmental pressures on nutrient transfer and aquatic enrichment was used with one catchment that had been cleared for pasture (CN9) and the second primarily undisturbed tropical wet forest (CS 1). Nutrients and related parameters in soils and transferred in normal hydrological discharge were investigated. Soils in the study area are oxisols with concentrations of organic matter, total and plant available P higher in the forested catchment. Indirect measures of suspended sediment by turbidity showed an increase in the deforested catchment stream. Water input via rainfall for the year June 2008-June 2009 was approximately 5000 mm. Stream discharge was approximately 3300 mm year" for each catchment as measured by continuous recorders and evapotranspiration was, on average, 1500 mm year". These data suggested a good resolution of the water balance from independent measurements. The effect of deforestation on stream discharge was a 59% increase in flow during the wet season and an increase in the Q5:Q95 ratio showing that the deforested stream was flashier. Loss of forest canopy and decreased organic matter in the soil resulted in a depletion of available N. The deforested catchment loss of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increased 33% over the forested catchment. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) showed a 47% increase in the deforested catchment compared with the forested catchment. The molar N:P ratios were lower than expected and both streams were well below the 0.06 mg L-1 level at which N- limitation has been reported. Effects of nutrient loading have been observed through increased algal growth on equipment surfaces in the deforested catchment stream and increased nutrient yields will likely lead to eutrophication of coastal waters. The Osa Peninsula is one of Costa Rica's most biodiverse areas with more large mammals than anywhere else in the country. During the last two decades, however, mammal species have been subject to illegal hunting pressure of unknown amounts. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of villagers and local leaders of Osa Peninsula regarding large mammals and their use, and to compare various estimates of wildlife abundance to assess potential effects of human activities during recent years. From surveys, 58% the 359 interviewees from 15 communities believe that in 1993 there were more wild animals than 2008. Paca is the most poached species, and second in importance is the white-lipped peccary. The main motivation for poaching is for local consumption, but 62% of interviewees strongly disagreed with the notion of poaching being a legitimate activity. Interviews with local leaders indicated that 63% strongly agreed that wildlife persistence is important for the development of the area. They believe that deforestation, poaching, and gold mining are the main activities negatively affecting wildlife species on the Osa Peninsula. During 2001 and 2002 I estimated Relative Abundance Indices (RAI) of nine species of vertebrates from tracks in three sectors differing in human activity: gold mining, farming, and indigenous people's activities. I found that jaguar, puma, white-lipped peccary, tapir, and great curassow had lower RAIs in the mining sector. Other species such as collared peccary, red brocket deer, agouti, and paca were just as common outside the Park as inside. I set up camera trap stations in the core and toward the edge of the CNP during 2003 and in the core of the park in 2008. There were few significant differences in the RAIs of the nine species near vs. far from the park, but abundance some species differed between years, likely a result of an increase in amount of patrolling by park rangers during that time. The results of this study provide insights into perceptions and behaviors of local residents, and into wildlife population changes, that can be used in the conservation of the mammals species in the Osa Peninsula.
