This research project focuses on the work of the contemporary Italian writer Melania Mazzucco. While memory, the role of women and social criticism are the most studied themes in her works, the main thread running through our research is the concept of commitment. This is a new critical perspective, in which impegno constitutes a kind of 'macro-category' encompassing all the many themes in the writer's output that have been analysed by critics.Mazzucco's commitment, which is evident in his literary output, consists of a marked interest in social issues, in caring for the oppressed and marginalised in society. It’s in this context that women play a very important role, as they are always the protagonists of his novels: they are often eccentric, dissatisfied women, perpetually in search of their own place in the world and their own identity. In short, this is a particular form of civic commitment linked to women's issues, and it develops mainly in two directions, which will form the second and third parts of our thesis: the female genealogies that Mazzucco reconstructs in his historical novels, with the intention of giving a life, a voice and a history to female figures from the past who really existed and who can be a source of inspiration for women today; the representation of contemporary Italy through female figures who highlight issues such as sexism, the migratory phenomenon, new family models. Women thus become a vehicle for addressing issues that affect both sexes equally. In our thesis, therefore, we have examined the presence of forms of commitment in Mazzucco's work by studying its manifestations in the two directions described above, in order to answer some fundamental questions: in the debate on literary commitment, which is very fertile in Italy today, how can we situate Mazzucco's work? In what forms and on what themes does his commitment express itself? Is it effective? Is it appreciated? Our thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, the aim is to situate Mazzucco in the Italian literary context, from the 1980s – the period of her formation – to the present day, in order to highlight influences, legacies and gaps. In the second part, we propose a cross-analysis of two novels, which are both historical biographies of women artists forgotten by history: La lunga attesa dell'angelo, which tells the life story of Marietta Tintoretto, the famous painter's favourite daughter who was encouraged by her father to exploit her talents despite the ban on women being painters; and L'Architettrice, which tells the story of Plautilla Bricci, the first woman architect in modern history, who was also the daughter of an artist. We wanted to understand why Mazzucco embarked on this recovery operation, and who these women of the past were whose life experience she wanted to pass on. My aim is to understand why Mazzucco embarks on this operation of recovery, who these women of the past are whose life experience she wants to pass on, and how she wants to pass it on.The third and final part of the thesis is devoted to the study of four novels set in the present day: Un giorno perfetto, Limbo, Sei come sei, Io sono con te. Storia di Brigitte. These books no longer set out to re-evaluate extraordinary women of the past in order to reintegrate them into Italian artistic and cultural history. Instead, they tell the ordinary stories of women in Italy today, struggling with problems of violence, discrimination and marginality within the family and/or society

This dissertation examines the rewriting of some myths from the female point of view in order to propose a (re)construction of women's genealogy. What are the representative figures of the mother/daughter relationship, and how are they constructed? In which movements do the rewritings of classical myths fit? Should the myths created by men be diverted in order to achieve a new female genealogy? This work is based on a double comparative approach ; first, it proposes an analysis of archetypal mother-daughter figures in a mythocritical perspective ; second, it brings together texts from French and Polish literature on cultural and linguistic levels. Thus, the biblical figures of Eve and Mary are compared with representations of pagan mythologies, such as Demeter and Persephone, Iphigenia and Clytemnestra, or finally Medea. These ancient figures of maternity return in force, revisited by contemporary French and Polish writers, to redefine the perception of the mother/daughter relationship. The works analyzed are numerous; for the French corpus, they range from Hélène Cixous to Christine Angot, and for the Polish texts, this dissertation focuses on women’s literature after 1989, when a more intimate literature emerged. These texts will be presented and analyzed so that the French reader can usefully discover them in tandem with the French texts. Considerable importance is given to the translation of extracts from these texts, in view of a complete translation later on. Despite the different socio-cultural contexts in which the two literatures have evolved, a real dialogue is established at the level of mythical paradigms. This rapprochement makes possible to imagine a universality inscribed in the ancient myths evoking the figures of motherhood. It is ultimately a common quest of women searching for a history in order to find foundations for a new genealogy

In American religious history, the feminization of Protestant denominations has been a long and gradual process. This feminization has been characterized by the increasing participation of women within religious institutions, not only as worshippers but also as religious leaders. Although Islam is considered to be a newly transplanted minority religion in the United-States, there are indicators revealing that, like many other transplanted religions in the United States, such as Reform Judaïsm and Buddhism, Muslim religious institutions are undergoing a process of feminization. These indicators have included the development of an Islamic feminist theology since the 1970s onwards, commonly called "Islamic feminism", and the emergence of a religious grass-root activism, more significantly since the 9/11 attacks. American Muslim women activists claim visibility in the public sphere and within the US Islamic religious landscape. What are their demands, challenges and strategies ? What are the internal and external factors that have led up to the growing visibility of women and women's issues in American Islam ? How specifically has the increased role of women affected American-Islamic institutions, beliefs or practices ? Those are some of the questions we raise in our thesisThe results are based on a fieldwork (semi-directive interviews and participant observation). We also use the data of a report on the inclusion of women within the American mosque published in 2013. The transformations linked to the increasing women’s participation in the mosque are emphasized

This thesis studies a change of paradigm in the way women’s literature and feminist writings imagine filiation. The analysis is based on the hypothesis that at the turn of the 1990s, the imagination of a lateral filiation, which takes the form of a sorority, is replaced by a melancholic filiation, corollary to the heiress’ posture of contemporary writers and thinkers. Parallel to the development of the Third Wave feminism, France and Quebec of the 1990s observe the emergence of a new generation of women’s writers. « [F]irst », in regards to the history of women’s literature, « to benefit from a visibly rich female literary heritage » (Rye and Worton, 2002: 5), the authors belonging to these “new voices” are doubly heiresses: of this female literary tradition and of the contemporary feminist thought. While the generation of the 1970s and early 1980s, in a sense reclaiming the discourse of the Enlightenment (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity), refused all the legacy from the former generation and imagined itself as a sorority founded upon the murder of the parental figures, the “new” generation is not breaking with the past anymore. On the contrary, it seeks to appropriate this past as well as history. Therefore these authors identified with this new generation investigate the vertical axe of genealogy. However, the family plot they explore through a genealogical gesture is whether baleful, whether partial, parceled out by secrets or by the passing of time and always appears, in any case, to be already lost. Yet, genealogy is not to be understood here as a mere vector of order or hierarchy but is rather related to a critical movement of dislocation that aims to “divert legitimacies by retracing the repressions, exclusions and taxonomies” (Noudelmann, 2004: 14) upon which any familial history is constructed. In other words, this generation of heiresses explores inheritance and filiations as a way to encounter otherness, not to say the uncanny. A similar search is also at stake in the critical and theoretical writings of the Third Wave feminism. Based on the analysis of women’s writings and feminist thinking published since the decade of 1970s – that sees the Second Wave feminism growing bigger and more influent – this thesis’ main objective is to circumscribe how the imagination of filiations is modified throughout the change of paradigm. By the light of this analysis lead is the first part of the thesis entitled “De la sororité aux liens f(am)iliaux”, it becomes possible in the two others parts, “Des fantômes et des anges. La filiation en régime spectral” and “Filles et mères, filles (a)mères. La filiation en régime de deuil”, both dedicated to the reading of the selected writings, to identify new forms of kinship explored by women’s writers since the 1990s.
