With a post-structural approach and an analytical focus on processes of governmentality and biopower, this study is concerned with how discourses of health are contextualized in educational practice and interaction between educators and participants in workplace health promotion (WHP) interventions. Of concern are issues of the discursive production, regulation and representation of power, knowledge and subjects as gendered beings in workplace health promotion interventions. The methods for generating data are participant observation, interviews and gathering of documentation pertaining to four different workplace health promotion nterventions. Based on these data, the thesis offers an analysis of the health discourses drawn on in the interventions and the technologies of power and of the self by which the participants are governed and invited to govern themselves in the name of health. It also asks what practices and positions that thus come to be made available or not to the participants. Two health discourses are identified: the biomedical discourse and the wellness discourse. Both discourses are drawn on in all four studied interventions, the biomedical discourse being the dominating discourse drawn on. The biomedical discourse is informed by scientific ‘facts’ and statistics and is underpinned by a notion of risk. The wellness discourse is informed by an understanding of health as a subjective embodied experience and is underpinned by a notion of pleasure. Drawing on these discourses, the responsibility for health is placed with the participants and the healthy participant/employee is constituted as a rationally motivated risk-avoider and disciplined pleasure seeker who is both willing and able to actively make ‘good’ choices regarding their lifestyle. Furthermore, and informed by essentialist and heteronormative ideas about gender, the ideal healthy person is modelled on a male norm, representing women as the deviant Other.

This thesis is concerned with the issue of gender inequality in higher education. It examines the relationship between gender and subject specialisation, looking in particular at the reasons for the predominance, at undergraduate level, of men in the physical sciences, and of women in the humanities. It investigates ideas of `masculinity' and `femininity' and how these relate to constructions of `science' and `arts'. The thesis argues that students choose which subject to study on the basis of certain qualities these subjects are seen to hold, and that these qualities have close connections with beliefs about `masculinity' and `femininity'. It examines this through an interview study of male and female students on six higher education courses: two university courses of physics, two university courses of English, a polytechnic course in communications and a polytechnic course in physical science. The interview study demonstrates that the science subjects are perceived by science students as more certain, more useful and more important than the humanities, and emphasise the value of their degree in gaining a well-paid and important job. Female science students, however, experience conflict between being `a good scientist' and being `feminine'. English and communications students emphasise the breadth, uncertainty and individuality of their subjects, and find science restrictive and narrow. They make little link between their degree and their future career. Men, however, feel no conflict between their identity as men and their chosen subject. It is argued that there is a close link between the construction of masculinity and the construction of physical science, but that English and communications are more ambivalent: in some senses `masculine', in some `feminine'. Men are advantaged in these subjects because of their greater visibility and assertiveness. The thesis concludes that the division between `science' and `arts' reinforces ideas of masculinity and femininity, and argues that female `failure' in education is in part the result of higher education's inability to transcend that division.

This thesis analyses the production and transformation of gendered ethnic and racial identifications in La Guajira (Colombia) in the context of the reparation of victims affected by the armed conflict in the country. The study concentrates on the category of 'victim' as an articulator of ethnic, racial and gender hierarchies, and as a device to politicise the caring relationships on which affiliation and belonging depend. The thesis traces the definition of indigeneity in La Guajira to cultural and biological mixture (mestizaje) and class formation, which were part of the efforts of subsequent powers to control the region during the 20th century through the engagement of masculine authority. Neoliberal policies, multiculturalism and paramilitary violence orchestrated a decline of the local elites that self-identified as 'mixed' and triggered a process of social mobilisation around victimhood, led mainly by women. Women's engagement in the post-victimisation process corresponded both to local notions of feminine mediation for the family and to transnational hegemonic discourses that place women as central actors in the reconstruction of 'communities'. Legal and political actions served as a locus to frame people as 'indigenous victims' and inscribe feminised and racialised forms of agency that underpinned reparation as a democratisation enterprise. Victimhood elicited the articulation of reparation efforts with forms of social welfare (mainly Conditional Cash Transfer programmes) and developmental strategies, which brought about strongly normative notions of 'family', commoditised caring relationships. The dissertation is based on 13 months of ethnographic fieldwork (2007-2008) with leaders, families and communities forming part of the indigenous organisation, the Wayou Women's Force. Fieldwork also involved other local and national indigenous leaders and governmental and non-governmental actors and representatives.

Who are the Jordanians? This dissertation approaches this question from the position of how: how is Jordanian citizenship thought of and practiced? As such this is not a study of national identity, but of citizenship. Al-sh’ab yureed…Much has been said about this clarion call which echoed in streets and squares across the Arab world in 2011/2012. Jordanians shared with their regional co-demonstrators a basis on which their claims, regardless of substantive differences, were made: citizenship. However actual examinations of citizenship since remain limited, beyond conceiving it as little more than a status of belonging. The thesis beyond is an investigation into the practice and theory of Jordanian citizenship. Divided into three parts and six chapters, the thesis makes several principal arguments. Part one: Citizens and Subjects? Theorising on History consists of the first three chapters. It establishes what I mean when speaking of a citizenship approach. It is advanced that citizenship’s historical pedigree in an Anglo-European context does not correlate with its Arabic counterparts. This becomes problematic when Anglo-European assumptions influence approaches to citizenship in the Arab world. Hence the need to elucidate the historical development of jinsiyyah and muwātanah. Third, this development is contextualised within Jordanian political history. The historical construction of Jordanian citizenship is situated in its contemporary context since the ascension of Abdullah II in 1999. Part two: Citizenship in Contemporary Jordan, containing chapters four, and five. Chapter four, making use of fieldwork conducted in Jordan uses contemporary reflections on citizenship from Jordanians as a lens through which the first decade of Abdullah II’s reign is analysed. A key characteristic of citizenship’s theory and practice is highlighted: the absence of accountability and ownership. The thesis then provides analysis of the 2011/2012 uprisings, situating them as a citizen search for ownership and accountability. Part three: Practices Within and Between Jinsiyyah and Muwātanah, is composed of chapters six, seven and eight, with a focus on contemporary affairs in the Jordan. Three areas: the gendering of citizenship, the politics of citizen expression and the intersections between tribalism and citizenship, are explored.

Conceptualization psychotherapy as an interpersonal influence process emphasizes how a therapist is perceived by a client. Factors affecting a client's early impressions of a therapist could influence therapeutic interactions since first impressions are relatively stable. The study investigated effects of nonverbal behavior and gender during a simulated initial meeting between a therapist and client. Undergraduates (N = 466) viewed a male or female therapist interviewing with a new female client. Therapist gaze .(100%, 80%, 40%) and smiling (high, low) were manipulated. After subjects viewed one of 12 videotapes, they completed questionnaires rating therapist expertness, trustworthiness, attractiveness, masculinity and femininity. A comparison of the therapist with subjects' expectations of a therapist in general was obtained by pre- and post-testing utilizing a measure of client expectations. MANOVAs were performed on all ratings except expectation scores, where an ANCOVA was utilized. Main effects for therapist gender indicated the female therapist was rated as significantly more expert, attractive, trustworthy and feminine than the male (ps < .81). For ratings of masculinity, subject gender interacted with therapist gender (p < .001). Wain effects showed that high smiling was rated as more attractive and more feminine (ps < .01). Smiling and level of gaze interacted on ratings of trustworthiness, expertness and masculinity (ps < .04). The 100 per cent and 80 per cent gaze levels increased expertness, trustworthiness and masculinity ratings. Smiling affected expertness at the 80 per cent level, and trustworthiness and masculinity at the 40 per cent level. Analysis of the expectation scores resulted in a three-way interaction between subject gender, smiling and gaze (p < .02). The results suggested that female subjects expected more responsive therapist behavior. The results suggested that the ratings of the male and female therapist reflected both the use of sex stereotypes and the influence of the therapist role. Based on the nonverbal behavior manipulation, several recommendations for therapist behavior were suggested.

This study explores women’s views and attitudes towards the traditionally masculine subjects in higher education in a Saudi Arabian context. It investigates the factors that influence women’s subject choices. It also addresses the implications of limited subject choices in women’s experiences in higher education. The study adopted an inquiry approach to understand women’s experiences in relation to their educational choices. The study was conducted at two universities located in two major cities in Saudi Arabia. The data in this study were collected through interviews with women. Snowball sampling was used to recruit 100 female students and lecturers. The findings of this study demonstrate how the internalisation of gender norms and gender stereotypes shapes women’s views and attitudes towards these subjects. It also shows how patriarchal structures influence women’s subject choices and how such influences vary depending on the father. Women who come from traditional families are more likely to accommodate the patriarchal influences, whilst those who come from non-traditional families are more likely to bargain or negotiate with the patriarchal system. This study reveals how fathers’ influences on women’s education differ according to their attitudes towards Ikhtilat. The study addresses the sensitivity of the Ikhtilat issue in the Saudi context and how the prohibition of Ikhtilat has shaped women’s experiences in Saudi higher education. It shows how women exercise their agency through bargaining, resisting and negotiating with the patriarchal system. Furthermore, it identifies factors that influence women’s subject choices and how these factors differ amongst women.

The National Agency for Education (Skolverket) and The Swedish National Curriculum have stated that equality between female and male students is important. The present study investigates students in the subject English in Swedish upper secondary school and municipal school for adult education from the perspective of gender dominance in English conversation with a teacher present, with the focus on turn-taking. Two separate observations were made in three classes in adult education and two classes in upper secondary school. The research questions of this investigation are; which gender dominates the on-going conversation in English with a teacher present, how the turns were allocated, given or taken, and if the gender patterns differ between a municipal school for adults and an upper secondary school. The potential impact of the teacher’s sex on the patterns of domination is also taken into consideration. Female dominance as well as male dominance is revealed in the result of the investigated classes’ gender patterns. The results also reveal that the teacher’s sex could have an impact on the patterns of domination.

The main interest of this interdisciplinary thesis (psychology-law) is the understanding of transphobia and discrimination against trans* people. I locate the problem of this type of discrimination in the social construction of ‘sex/gender’ categories. Particularly, I situate it in the definition of the norms that constitute ‘woman’ and ‘man’ as two essential and mutually exclusive categories that sustain the unequal binary organisation of society. People who transgress those norms have been labelled as ‘mentally ill’ by psychiatry and psychology since the end of the 19th century. The emergence of trans* activism from the 1960s and especially Trans Studies in the 1990s has allowed questioning those pathologising discourses. In the present context, we observe a tendency towards the depathologisation of trans* experiences and identities. Depathologisation is coupled with increased visibility of trans* people in the cultural domain and a more favourable public opinion towards them. However, trans* people still face serious discrimination and the norm that divides humankind into ‘women’ and ‘men’ is still very much present. Drawing on these premises I argue that the transgression of ‘sex/gender’ norms have been redefined nowadays so that the binary opposition between women and men is maintained as the norm. Thus, trans* people are still depicted as ‘abnormal’ although pathologising and psychiatric discourses are not necessarily employed today. The general objective of the thesis is to understand how this redefinition is carried out and the effects of it in two specific contexts: the legal certification of sex in the civil status of individuals in Belgium and the definition of the worker subject. The choice of these two cases responds to the fact that trans* people report facing many obstacles and discrimination in them. Based on the theoretical and methodological principles of discursive psychology and Perelmanian new rhetoric, I realised the discourse analysis of two corpora: a legislative corpus and a corpus of interviews. The legislative corpus comprises texts of Acts, bills, amendments, parliamentary debates and Circulars regulating the mention of sex in the civil status in Belgium. The second corpus includes the transcriptions of five group interviews with workers carried out with co-workers from five work organisations in Brussels. In both cases, the identification of discursive practices and their variability allowed me to elucidate the effects they produce. Specifically, it allowed me to show that, although the identified practices seem less stigmatising, they still depict trans* people as a ‘deviation from the norm’, thereby legitimising a different legal treatment towards them and justifying the discrimination and exclusion they endure at work. Moreover, the identified practices reproduce the binary organisation of society and justify discrimination against women in the workplace. The ultimate purpose of this thesis is to promote an informed critical attitude towards those discursive practices and, in this way, to contribute to the struggle against transphobia and sexism.

Анотація:
Social studies of technology and particularly the sociology of technology have long explored the reticulations between technology and social life. More specifically, the sociology of technology has contributed numerous studies addressing the relationship between technological artefacts and the social order. Following this tradition, feminist studies of technology have developed robust analyses of technology and subjectivity, with particular attention given to questions of gender identity. Additionally, recent work in technology studies has engaged with the problem of embodiment, both in terms of technological practice and with regard to the body as a consequential phenomenon in sociological enquiry. This thesis aims to further develop the sociological study of technological artefacts, subjects, and bodies through sociophilosophical analysis. By bringing to bear sociological methodology and theory upon fundamental questions in the philosophy of technology, this research elucidates and resolves problems relevant to both the philosophy and sociology of technology. Specifically, this thesis interrogates the manners and modalities in which technological artefacts, subjects, and bodies are rendered intelligible in social life. In doing so, it develops a symmetrical sociological analysis of these three phenomena and posits a robust solution to the question concerning ontology within the philosophy of technology. Here, I posit a conceptualization of technological artefacts, subjects, and bodies as artificial kinds entities underdetermined by materiality and ontologically dependent upon self referential social practice. I argue that in using Kusch’s concept of artificial kinds, we gain a useful perspective with which to discern the relationships between the ontological constitution of artefacts, the development of subject positions, and the social ‘situatedness’ of bodies and embodied practice. I also develop the concept of entangled ontologies, an analytic lens that highlights the dependence and interrelation that characterize the ontological constitution of artefacts, subjects, and bodies in social life. My analysis re-frames critical questions of technological ontology and illustrates the importance of fundamental philosophical problems to the sociological study of technology. In doing so, I am extending and amending the Performative Theory of Social Institutions - the social theory of the Strong Programme in the sociology of scientific knowledge. My theoretical project is supported by robust empirical work, which focuses on technological experience and motorcycling in Latin America. I carried out 36 in-depth qualitative interviews with a varied sample of motorcyclists in Costa Rica, and supplemented these with ethnographic observation. This empirical work contributed substantially to the development of my theoretical argument, and constitutes a considerable portion of the argument contained within this thesis. The three primary chapters - concerned with artefacts, subjects, and bodies, respectively - make substantial use of my empirical work throughout their analytic arguments, and each chapter contains an empirical component consisting of consolidated case material. The first - on artefacts - addresses heteronormativity in the constitution of artefact ontologies. The second - on subjects - discusses the role of age and ageing in the articulation of motorcycling subject positions. Last, the empirical material on bodies addresses the role of machinic and corporeal practices in the classification and ontological constitution of bodies. All three of these components represent original contributions to technology studies. Notably, sexuality and ageing arguably remain invisible phenomena to sociologists of technology. The empirical and analytic work contained within this thesis contributes substantially to a variety of fields. As I discuss in detail in my concluding chapter, my use of symmetrical sociophilosophical analysis presents feminist technology studies with new avenues for research, as well as new analytic tools with which to address questions of paramount importance. My use of Kusch’s artificial kinds allows for a reconsideration of constructivism in technology studies, and provides a resolution to the Woolgar, Grint, & Kling debate of the early 1990s. Finally, this research presents the philosophy of technology with a new approach to the question of technological ontology, and contributes meaningfully to contemporary efforts to develop a synergetic sociological-philosophical analysis of technology.

Internet-based celebrity gossip blog site, TMZ, is a growing cultural force. Employing critical rhetorical analytics, the author examines the TMZ coverage of Chris Brown's assault on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. This project explicates TMZ's enthymematic invocation of dominant cultural ideologies surrounding race, sex, and domestic violence. Chapter 1 demonstrates the theoretical importance of both celebrities and gossip blogs, signaling the ideological importance of each. Chapter 2 critiques TMZ's reliance on historic myths regarding sex and race in their reporting on this case. Chapter 3 analyzes TMZ's humorous and affective strategies that bolster broader investments in colorblind ideologies. Chapter 4 concludes by examining the interplay of formal rhetorical elements that inform the project's findings. This research reveals that TMZ utilizes affective, enthymematic strategies that camouflage broader racist and sexist ideological impulses that perpetuate domestic violence myths.

This research builds on the research carried out for my Institution Focussed Study (IFS) in which I explored the factors that influenced male and female enrolment in the science and technology subjects with special reference to one large Senior Secondary School, Gaborone Senior Secondary School, in Botswana. The study followed the observation that there were very few female students enrolled in the University of Botswana's Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET). Application and enrolment procedures from the University showed no gender bias in recruitment procedures, therefore I looked at secondary education, which is the major determinant of university recruitment. Evidence from the IFS suggested, amongst other things, that we were about to see an increased application and enrolment of females in the BSc year 1. The research for my thesis involved both a replication and extension of the IFS. The main research methods used were semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. In the replication phase, I worked with Year 5 students generally and relevant staff in two additional schools, Lobatse Senior Secondary School (Lob Sec) and St Joseph's College (St Joe). In the extension phase I worked more intensively with male and female students studying the triple sciences in these two schools, these being the students from whom the University would select its future science and engineering students. I interviewed the following: students and staff members from a lower secondary school; staff members from Lob Sec and St Joe; lecturers from the University and the Botswana College of Agriculture and Ministry of Education Officials. The replication and extension studies both indicate that there will probably be an increased participation of girls in university science and technology subjects in the near future. The present imbalances in BSc recruitment can be explained by girls' relatively lower examination performance in science, both at the end of junior secondary schooling — which governs entry to prestigious triple science courses in senior secondary schools — and at the end of senior secondary school itself. I Iowever, they are progressively narrowing the gap in both these areas. Entry to University engineering courses is more difficult to predict. However substantial percentages of girls in the study indicated that their career preferences fall along science and engineering, and both 'providers' and 'consumers' of science and engineering products expressed the need for girls to follow these courses. I concluded that there must be a more meaningful programme to further increase girls' participation in science and technology.

Although the Australian Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC) tabled its National Report over a decade ago, its 339 recommendations are still used to steer Indigenous justice policy. The inquiry is viewed by many policy makers and scholars as an important source of knowledge regarding the post-colonial lives of Indigenous people. It began as an investigation into Indigenous deaths in custody, but its scope was later broadened to encompass a wide range of matters affecting Indigenous Australians. There have been numerous criticisms made about the way the investigation was conducted and about the effectiveness and appropriateness of the recommendations made. Of particular relevance to this thesis are those criticisms that have highlighted the failure of the RCIADIC to consider the problems confronting Indigenous women. It has been claimed that although problems such as family violence and the sexual abuse of Indigenous women by police were acknowledged by both the RCIADIC and other scholars as having a significant impact upon the lives of Indigenous women, the RCIADIC failed to address these and other gender-specific problems. The RCIADIC reports themselves do not contradict these claims since they explicitly state that the RCIADIC was primarily concerned with the problems faced by Indigenous men and youth. This thesis is a critical analysis of the way in which the problems confronting Indigenous women were considered in the Indigenous texts of the Aboriginal Issues Units (AIUs) and in the official reports produced by the RCIADIC, the extent to which these considerations differed, and the reasons why the RCIADIC responded to the problems relating to Indigenous women in the way that it did. Data were collected from close readings of the Indigenous texts and official reports and from 48 interviews with people who either worked for the RCIADIC or were in some other way associated with the RCIADIC. There are two analyses conducted in the thesis. The content analysis is an intersectional race and gender analysis of the Indigenous texts and official reports with a view to identifying the extent to which the RCIADIC failed to address the concerns of Indigenous women. The procedures analysis is a critical analysis of the principal ideological and procedural reasons for the RCIADIC's focus upon men and Indigenous youth and its resultant marginalisation of Indigenous women. The thesis concludes that although the RCIADIC did not completely ignore Indigenous women, it inadequately considered the problems that posed major risks to their health and safety, namely, family violence and police treatment. The official reports of the RCIADIC contained information about housing, offending patterns of Indigenous women, the problems associated with visiting family members in prison, and the need to inform families of a death in custody and of post-death investigations which was not contained in the Indigenous texts. Importantly, however, the official reports more than the Indigenous texts took a 'community-focused' approach to the problems faced by Indigenous people, and this approach was ultimately framed in a way which emphasised the needs of Indigenous males and youth rather than that of Indigenous women. Finally, the thesis identifies seven principle reasons for the male-centred focus of the RCIADIC, the most important of which were the emphasis placed on male-centred politics ahead of the concerns of Indigenous women, by Indigenous people and RCIADIC staff, the liberal legal ideology informing the choices of the predominantly male lawyers who controlled the inquiry, and the time and resource constraints imposed on the RCIADIC by federal, State and Territory governments.

The problem of linguistic and structural bias in the subject vocabularies used by libraries has been the subject of varying degrees of scrutiny in the cataloging literature of the past several decades. This study examines the Library of Congress subject headings involving sex and gender from 1988, 1993, and 2003. Changes to the headings are tracked and analyzed. Comparisons are made between recommendations made in the literature and changes to the subject vocabulary; the impact of the changes on the appearance of bias on the basis of sex and gender in library catalogs is discussed.

In this theoretical study, I apply a historiographical approach to examine the development of the Anthropocene as a concept and its use across disciplines and through time. Using a synthesis of the literature of the Anthropocene, I uncover eight “hidden” narratives that are embedded within its discourse, and further link these to European humanist thought and the creation of subject and Other. I use these narratives to inform my intersectional analysis, wherein subjects are formed through the interplay between identity construction, symbolic representations, and social structures. These levels provide a framework with which to examine subject formation, with a special focus on the dimensions of coloniality, class, gender, and race within the discourse of the Anthropocene. By applying an intersectional perspective, I discuss who the subjects of the Anthropocene are presented as and how they are created. Finally, I apply posthuman perspectives to discuss how and why subject formation must be made more complex. I argue that subject formation in the Anthropocene must better adhere to relationalities between humans – as well as between humans and the more-than- human world – if we are to effectively envision alternative trajectories away from the current ecological and social crises that define this time of environmental change.  The main contributions of this study are thus: (1) a review and synthesis of literature on the Anthropocene, (2) an identification of eight narratives that are embedded in the discourse surrounding the term, and (3) an analysis that applies intersectional and posthuman perspectives to subject formation within the discourse of the Anthropocene.

This dissertation looks at the way in which the shifting configurations of nation, gender and future in Micah might affect readers' positioning as subjects---that is their positioning as agents of speech and action---in a way that might engender resistance to oppression. It is suggested that if readers of Micah identify with the ambiguous and shifting national and gendered identities, within the context of the book's visions for the future, they are urged to recognize contradictions within their own subjectivity. This has the possible effect of shifting the reader's pre-formed subject position, or at least interrogating it, a process which may allow for resistance to oppression. The theoretical problematic for this approach originates within recent discussions of textual determinacy in biblical and literary criticism: "is it the text or the reader that controls meaning?" The work of theorist Homi K. Bhabha on the negotiation of cultural difference in colonial and post-colonial contexts is used to engage the position---common to much contemporary literary and cultural criticism---that the reader comes to the text already formed as a subject within ideology, and that this will necessarily affect or control the way she reads the text. Zizek's reading of Althusser through Lacan is taken as a starting point for an understanding of "subject formation" thus conceived. This position, which tends toward the fixity of the subject, can be seen as analogous to Bhabha's discussion of the role of "pedagogical objects and discourses" (cultural icons, stereotypes, formative events) within the construction of national identity. By way of contrast, Bhabha's key concepts---hybridity, third space, outside the sentence, liminal identification, time-lag, agency in indeterminacy; in short performative practice---envision an identification with difference in a way that allows for the subject to be repositioned and for meaning to be reinscribed. Bhabha's notions of pedagogical object and

The aim of the present study was to determine the distributions of and correlations between hand preference, visual acuity and eye preference through a series of tests in 50 males 50 females aged between 17 and 39 years. Handedness was determined through the Edinburgh handedness inventory questionnaire. The handedness distribution was: right-handed 90%, left-handed 1 %, and ambidextrous 9%. I found that 30 % had better visual acuity with their right eye, 39 % had better visual acuity with their left eye, and 31% had the same visual acuity with both eyes. 75.2% on average used their right eye in the battery of tests and 24.8% on average used their left eye. There were no statistically significant differences between the sexes or age groups with any of the measures. No correlation was found between eye preference and visual acuity or eye preference and hand preference among all subjects. No statistically significance between the sexes was found.

This research attempts to identify the factors which influence the choice of science subjects in Mauritius among girls at the end of the third year of secondary education, the level up to which science is a compulsory subject. This low uptake of science subjects by girls beyond the compulsory level is a matter of concern. The study was undertaken in four purposely selected schools in Mauritius, two mixed-sex and two girls’ schools. Using mainly a qualitative approach, data were collected through: (i) non-participant observations of 60 science and 20 non-science lessons, (ii) 16 semi-structured face-to-face interviews of teachers, and six group interviews with pupils and (iii) 135 questionnaires administered to the parents of the pupils in the classes observed in the four schools. Based on the results of a pilot study, modifications were made for the main study. The data provided insights into teachers’ teaching approaches, the behaviour and interest of pupils in the lessons and other factors such as pupils’ perceptions of science, their self-identity and role models, and the extent to which parents and peers influence the choice of subjects among girls. The findings show that teaching approaches were mainly traditional and that both girls and boys prefer hands-on activities and contextual examples reflecting real-life situations. The majority of the girls’ experiences of science were negative and this deterred them from taking science beyond the compulsory level although they were aware of its importance. Teachers had positive opinions about girls’ ability to do science but stated that lack of infrastructure facilities did not allow them to involve the pupils in practical work as much as they would wish. However, brighter girls’ decisions to study sciences were not outweighed by these factors. Parents felt that they did not influence their daughters in the choice of subjects or eventual careers though they held science in high esteem.

The paper aims to understand how the human rights discourse and the sexual orientation and gender identity discourse overlap in the international realm, raising tensions and normativities which undermine different forms of being, living or thinking gender and sexuality and remove the political of these issues in the international arena. In this sense, the human rights discourse, as a pre-existing solution for various problems with focus on the individual and in a procedural view of justice, needs to be revaluated to overcome its Euro-American geography and the frequent debate between cosmopolitism and communitarianism. The way by which human rights are applied demands static subjects that are also reinforced by the sexual orientation and gender identity discourse, reaffirming the western binaries of gender and sexuality and their normativities. Rights related to sexuality and gender are approached as another generation of human rights, having as reference documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and neglecting contingent dialogues in social exchange. The paper dialogues with a radical and collective perspective of human rights, sexuality and gender to recover the political of these issues and the notion of social justice, as well as to consider the multiple constitutions of subjects around the world. In sum, a first part of this paper works with the silence of IR theories about the above-mentioned themes and, then, in a second part, the problems and alternatives are thought with focus on the practice of international relations in international forums.

The first chapter, "The Heteronormative Gaze: Early Scholarly Discourse on Third/Fourth Gender Native Americans and the Construction of the Indigenous Other," takes an intellectual history approach, focusing on early anthropological studies which contained accounts of queer/non-binary persons in Native American culture during the early twentieth century. It also examines how this academic discourse shaped the perspective on these individuals and the development of certain terminology over the last century. This chapter analyzes a range of early anthropological literature published between 1903 and 1955 in the academic journal, American Anthropologist, by a number of scholars in the field, including W. W. Hill, Elsie Clews Parsons, and others. The second chapter, "Reconstruction of the Non-Western 'Other': Sympathetic Interpretations of Race and Gender in Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone," explores the historical relationship between British imperialism and the anxieties within the Metropole surrounding Indian people and culture during the second half of the nineteenth century as it is reflected in Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone. Additionally, this chapter enumerates the ways in which Collins's representation of race and gender associated with non-western colonial subjects contrasted to that of other white Victorian observers. Despite that both chapters focus on different global regions, and employed two distinct forms of literature for the primary source analyses, the central topic of both chapters revolve around gender and sexuality in the context of British colonialism during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This thesis explores the mental representation of subject-verb agreement, and the factors that can affect the determination of agreement in language production. It reports nine experiments that used a task in which participants produced sentence completions for visually presented complex subjects such as “The greyhound which two lively rabbits were tempting”. Such completions typically agree with the head noun (greyhound) as in “A greyhound which two lively rabbits were tempting is jumping” but sometimes agree with the local noun (rabbits) as in “A greyhound which two lively rabbits were tempting are jumping”. The first experiments examined the value of the concept of markedness in subject verb number agreement to see whether it has explanatory power for languages like Slovene with more than two number values. Results from two experiments employing complex sentence preambles including a head noun post modified by a prepositional phrase or a relative clause (e.g., “The nudist(s) near the sand dune(s)”) show that Slovene number agreement differs from number agreement in languages with no dual, but that it is not possible to simply state that the singular is the least marked and the dual the most. I argue that using languages with more complex number systems allows greater insight into the processes of correct and erroneous subject-verb agreement, and shows that it is necessary to dissociate susceptibility to agreement from error-causing status. To conclude, the concept of markedness seems unable to explain my results. Semantic effects in agreement are then examined using two comparison experiments in English. Experiment 3 shows that although English has only a two value system, speakers are sensitive to semantic differences in number. Experiment 4 explores the possible influence of speakers’ native language three-value number system on their two-value second language system. It shows that native speakers of English are more sensitive to semantic number differences in English than Slovene speakers of English. Experiment 5 explores gender agreement in Slovene (which has three genders) and shows that there is a complex pattern of agreement. As with number, there is not just one number value which is problematic: neuter and masculine are most confusable, but masculine errors are also common when feminine agreement would be expected, thus suggesting that speakers revert to two different defaults, masculine and neuter. Finally, the results of four experiments examining number and gender agreement in coordinated phrases are presented. Agreement in such phrases may be resolved (i.e. the verb agrees with the whole subject) but may instead agree with one conjunct. Agreement with one conjunct is affected byword order (agreement with the nearest conjunct is most common), coordinator (e.g., single-conjunct agreement is more common after “or” than “and”) and the gender or number of the conjuncts (e.g., dual number is associated with single-conjunct agreement). Taken together, my results suggest that agreement is affected by a complex interplay of semantic and syntactic factors, and that the effects of a three-valued system are quite distinct from those of a two-valued system.

This thesis addresses some of the extant gaps in law and literature criticism using an historical cultural criticism of law and literature that focuses on the Jacobean female legal subject in cases of divorce and adultery. It examines the intellectual milieu that constructs law and literature in this period to contribute to research on female subject formation, and looks specifically at how literature and law work to construct identity. This thesis asks what views Jacobean literature presents of the female legal subject, and what do those views reveal about identity and gender construction? Chapter one offers some essential historical contexts. It establishes the jurisprudential conditions of the period, defines the ideal female legal subject, touches on recent historical scholarship regarding women and law, explores how literature reveals law's artificiality, and links the Inns of Court to the theatres. Chapter two focuses on women and divorce. The first sections discuss the theology and ideology which impacted on divorce law. The latter sections examine Elizabeth Cary's Tragedy of Mariam, ca. 1609, and two manuscript accounts of Frances Howard's 1613 divorce trial, William Terracae's poem, A Plenarie Satisfaction, ca. 1613, and The True Tragi-Comedie Formarly Acted at Court, a play by Francis Osborne, 1635. These texts reveal the legal construction and frustrations of married women, and illustrate a gendered divide in attitudes towards women's legal position. Chapter three examines women and adultery law. It then juxtaposes representations of women justly accused of adultery, like the real-life Alice Clarke, and the fictional Isabella in John Marston's The Insatiate Countess, 1613, and unjustly accused, like the virtuous wives in Marston's play. This chapter reveals how male anxiety creates the stereotypes that constrain the female legal subject within systems of patrilineal inheritance. As a whole, this thesis uses literature to explore the Jacobean female legal subject's relationship to her husband and to the law, and, in some cases, it challenges the assumption that women were effectively constrained by legal dictates which would keep them chaste, silent and submissive. Literature, in some cases, works alongside law to sustain constructed identities, but radical literature can undermine law by challenging the stereotypes and identities law works to maintain.

The purpose of this study is to examine gender bias in sports media from the perspective of the sports columnist. The research analyzed 1,082 sports columns written by ten columnists (five male, five female) at newspapers across the United States. The columns were scrutinized to determine if the column subject was male or female. Results found that 84.4% of the sports columns were written about male athletes or men's sports compared to only 9% devoted to female athletes and women's sports. The research also found that female sports columnists write about female sports 12.7% of the time, while male sports columns only dedicate 6% of their columns to female athletes or women's sports. Newspapers with a larger circulation were more likely to have sports columns about female sports than were newspapers with smaller readerships. Six of the columnists were then interviewed to get their opinions on gender issues in sports journalism.

There are many ways in which gender diversity and sexualness are experienced, spoken of and transacted in India. Recent activism against marginalisation related to sexual and gender nonconformity has led to transformation of some of these idioms into objects that circulate in particular registers of governmentality. In the process, something quite else is created, and this something else portends to speak the truth of 'sexuality in India'. Based on fieldwork carried out between 2005 and 2007 in cities, towns and villages around India, this thesis tells a story of this emergence of 'sexuality' as an aspect of personhood, a political object, a basis for social mobility, a mode of connectedness between people and as a legitimate cause for a movement. The term 'Queer', used variously in India, is a shorthand in some contexts for people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and with South Asian identities such as Hijra, Kothi and Aravani. In others, it refers to a political project challenging norms of heterosexual monogamy, marking a conscious move away from identity-based politics premised on a bio-medical presumption that desire defines personhood. Evoking both these meanings, I examine queer activism as the negotiation of terms of entry of Queer bodies into epidemiological and juridical registers. In relation to the first, I examine interventions of the transnational HIV/AIDS industry that target 'men who have sex with men' – or 'MSM' – the category through which the industry apprehends sexualness between male subjects. I focus on the political-economic conditions of epidemiological knowledge, and on the transformation of idioms of gender and sexualness that its production draws upon. The industry, I argue, is involved in establishing availability of socio-economically marginalised bodies for intervention and research. These relationships of availability are possible because of their promise of social mobility and respectability for queer folk, hitherto despised in masculinist political economies. This mobility is contingent upon the creation and adoption of epidemiologically overdetermined identities which ironically find political significance in being seen as timeless and 'traditional'. The dichotomous being of the 'MSM' - simultaneously the producer and the object of this epidemiological knowledge, implies that the production of this knowledge is predicated upon the ability of queer folk to perform their place in the 'community'. The relationships in the 'field' are already written into the data, and thus the knowledge. Epidemiological knowledge, and the subjects it speaks of, I thus argue, are best understood as articulations of the conditions of their production. The second theme, of Law and the juridical register, opens with an examination of the tensions involved in the production of 'homophobia' as a political object. The disavowal of erotic dimensions in the naming of experiences as 'homophobic violence' is situated in the context of a popular imagination of a worthy juridical subject, and in broader imaginings of power. I then turn to the conditions under which the law, and in particular, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a Victorian anti-sodomy law under which homosexuality is seen to be criminalised, comes to be central to the Queer movement in India. Activism has given Section 377 a 'social life', an awareness of the law in public spheres, amongst law enforcers and branches of the State. Simultaneously, the Law has been inaugurated as a space for the articulation of more diffuse tensions. It has given a tangibility and intelligibility to experiences of exclusion, marginalisation and violence. I then examine a litigation at the High Court of Delhi challenging this law on grounds that it violates Fundamental Rights, focussing on the constitution of a coherent Queer body, cast simultaneously as enumerable, drawing on epidemiological knowledge; and, as capable of instantiation through individual narratives of violation. This project, where a sexuality is ascribed to the citizen-subject, is then juxtaposed with instances where activists actively strip sexualness off of the Queer body in order to make claims to citizenship. This is a cleavage in the Queer movement, an effect of the diversity of bodies it claims to speak of, as, and for, and the conditions under which these diverse bodies seek articulation. Between these projects lies ambiguity, which, I argue, is a precious resource for Queer folk, and for the movement. I suggest a conceptual shift from 'sexuality', (as personhood), to 'sexualness' (where desire flows through subjects without constituting them), argue that the Subject found in registers of governmentality may best be understood in terms of its political economy and distinct from psychic formations, and finally, offer up thoughts for a politics of ambiguity.

This thesis explores students' experiences of specialist information technology (IT) courses at the secondary school level in New Zealand. It asks whether students experience a gendered curriculum culture in relation to specialist IT subjects. The exploration involves a survey of national curriculum arrangements and detailed consideration of the manner in which the curriculum is implemented in practice by teachers and experienced by students in three case study classes in a conventional high school, Kahikatea High School (KHS). These classes are year 12 computer studies (CPS) and years 12 and 10 text and information management (TIM). Twenty-two students were the focus of detailed observation in the course of a year. It is found that students experience a gendered IT curriculum culture at KHS, which takes form in both gendered subject and classroom cultures. Gendered subject cultures are established in part through national curriculum structures that maintain subjects from historically gendered domains. Conservative local subject arrangements at KHS contribute to a gendered curriculum in practice. The curriculum takes on a gendered character as a function of choice - teachers' choices about subjects they will offer and the way courses are organised and presented, and students' choices about what subjects they will take. Particular subjects and courses are associated with nominally masculine and feminine computer practices and are thereby imbued with masculine and feminine subject identities. There is considerable variation and nuance in the way students experience different IT courses and in the meanings they make of their experiences. In short, individual students experience the same course differently. They are influenced to greater and lesser degrees by a range of factors, including expectations, prior experience, classroom pedagogy, classroom relationships and performance. Also, individual students are negotiating their masculine and feminine identities as students of IT and computer users as they participate in specialist IT courses and in other arenas of their lives. As they negotiate their roles as computer users and students of IT at KHS, males and females are established in relations of power or authority with the technology and with each other - as computer controllers, aspirant controllers and competent users. These relationships have a gendered character that derives from the attribution of the status of controllers to (some) males and the exclusion of females from this group. However, individual males and females aspire to and are attributed the characteristics and status commensurate with a range of user roles. Gender is a factor in individual students' experiences, but in ways that defy stereotyping and that are highly individualised. All this suggests that gender is not essential in the sense that it implies sameness, but also that gender is not passé or inconsequential as a factor in students experiences of specialist IT courses. Gender relations are a fundamental and inescapable feature of students' experiences of the IT curriculum in practice at KHS.

Gaweda, Barbara Justyna. "No country for losers? : gender, (in)equality, and the discursive construction of subjects and values in Polish politics." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25940.

Mainstream scholarly literature has examined the post-1989 transformations in Eastern Europe without sufficient attention to gendered perspectives. Most feminist scholars and mainstream political scientists expected that the processes of democratization and Europeanization would be harbingers of positive change, and have not fully succeeded in explaining the current lack of gender equality in the region. This dissertation attempts to fill the gap by combining the insights from ‘Western’ theoretical contributions with empirical research of the Polish case. By drawing on multiple theoretical angles (post-colonialism, nationalism and gender, feminist institutionalism, feminist political economy, Europeanization), I aim to rethink the complex position of Poland in the processes of Europeanization and soft norm diffusion. The recent ‘war on gender’, which took the form of a virulent anti-equality and anti-minorities discursive campaign, has demonstrated that, despite the political and economic changes after 1989, gender inequality and social exclusion persist, and indeed may have intensified. My research explores the current discursive products and legacies (construction of subjects and values) of transformation and Europeanization as observed in mainstream political debates. This dissertation focuses on debates in the Polish parliament, the Sejm, because it is the main site of political discourse in Poland and thus influences also broader societal debates. My main argument is that gendered discourses in the Polish parliament reproduce patterns of domination and inequality, thereby creating discursive categories and subjects that are excluded and marginalized. Dominant discourses on masculinity, femininity, and sexuality prescribe a conservative set of social relations in the family and the nation. This implies that anyone who does not fulfil these discursive standards gets symbolically stigmatized and emerges from the political process as a discursive ‘loser’. Furthermore, the dissertation argues that the ways in which Europeanization and democratization were implemented in Poland, focusing primarily on neoliberal economic reforms, have left free rein to right-wing forces and the catholic church to define values and subjects. I specifically address the influential role of the catholic church in the Polish political context and argue that the anti-gender equality and anti-diversity mobilizations are cyphers for a broader backlash led by nationalist conservative actors against Europeanization and globalization processes. My contributions lie in the theoretical and conceptual bridging of various literatures (i.e. on transformation and gender) and the application of critical discourse analysis to the study of Polish parliamentary debates. Moreover, the thesis exposes invisible and ‘gender neutral’ norms about subjects and gender roles as constructed in Polish politics, with particular focus on welfare and family models and the construction of the nation. I highlight hegemonic masculinities and the marginalization or silencing of alternative discourses. The analysis provides insights into the mechanisms of gender power that construct some groups as the norm and others as problematic or deviant.
