Unlike desert rodents from North America, Allenby’s gerbil (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi) from the Negev Desert, Israel has evolved with snakes that do not have heat-sensitive sensory pits that enhance night vision. Does this history affect their ability to assess and respond to a snake that has this ability? As a test, we exposed gerbils to risk of predation from various predators, including snakes, owls, and foxes. The snakes included the Saharan horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) and the sidewinder rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes). The former snake lacks sensory pits and shares a common evolutionary history with the gerbil. The latter snake, while convergent evolutionarily on the horned viper, has sensory pits and no prior history with the gerbil. The gerbils exploited depletable resource patches similarly, regardless of snake species and moon phase. While the gerbils did not respond to the novel snake as a greater threat than their familiar horned viper, the gerbils were cognizant that the novel predator was a threat. In response to both snakes, giving-up densities (GUDs; the amount of food left in a resource patch following exploitation) of the gerbils were higher in the bush than open microhabitat. In response to moonlight, GUDs were higher on full than on the new moon. Based on GUDs, the gerbils responded most to the risk of predation from the red fox, least from the two snake species, and intermediate for the barn owl. Keywords:

Viewed qualitatively, Jay Appleton's prospect/refuge theory is intuitively attractive. Viewed quantitatively, can it be substantiated and is it useful? This study aims to substantiate the theory. Prospect/refuge theory is presented in context with other landscape theories all of which are based on a long tradition of gardening practice. A review of gardening practice and theory is followed by a review of empirical aesthetics and the landscape. The main part of the study. is the set of experiments developed to test certain predictions of prospect/refuge theory using a variety of experimental methods. The results of these experiments give support to Appleton's hypotheses and open the way for future research in prospect/refuge theory.

This dissertation is a critical re-assessment of Imagism and Vorticism in relation to the European avant-garde, which both movements aspired towards in their reactions against the contemporary English arts and letters. I explore the implementation of such aspirations in the English arts by chronicling the complex relationship between the English movements and Cubism, the Parisian avant-garde, Italian Futurism and German Expressionism. The thesis argues that Imagism and Vorticism simultaneously modelled themselves on and reacted against their Continental counterparts, in terms of aesthetic concepts, artistic techniques and promotional tactics in creating a modern art. As movements with contributors of different nationalities and working in different artistic media, including poetry, painting and sculpture, there necessarily exists many aesthetic varieties within Imagism and Vorticism apart from foundational consensus shared by group members. In order to address the complexity of the groups’ make-up and the interdisciplinarity of their avant-garde aesthetics, the enquiry is made through a two-fold approach: firstly, by conducting contextual and comparative studies of significant individuals of the movements, including T. E. Hulme, Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound, to gauge their individual perspectives on literature, visual arts and aesthetic theories; secondly, by considering the heterogeneous nature of these movements and exploring the group dynamics, tensions and rivalries within the movements and with other contemporary groups. With this dual focus, my thesis reconstructs the cultural milieu through the artists’ works and correspondence, as well as the circulation network of little magazines, publicity and patronage, in order to reconcile the aesthetic and social contexts of Imagism and Vorticism, both in England and beyond. Ultimately, my thesis provides a more comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the English movements’ aesthetics, their relationship with the European avant-garde, and their impact on artistic and literary experimentation in modernist English literature and visual arts.

This thesis explores the notion of ‘experimental voice’ in avant-garde performance, in the way it transgresses conventional forms of vocal expression as a means of both extending and enhancing the expressive capabilities of the voice, and reframing the social and political contexts in which these voices are heard. I examine these avant-garde voices in relation to three different liminal contexts in which the voice plays a central role: in ritual vocal expressions, such as Greek lament and Māori karanga, where the voice forms a bridge between the living and the dead; in electroacoustic music and film, where the voice is dissociated from its source body and can be heard to resound somewhere between human and machine; and from a psychoanalytic perspective, where the voice may bring to consciousness the repressed fears and desires of the unconscious. The liminal phase of ritual performance is a time of inherent possibility, where the usual social structures are inverted or subverted, but the liminal is ultimately temporary and conservative. Victor Turner suggests the concept of the ‘liminoid’ as a more transgressive alternative to the liminal, allowing for permanent and lasting social change. It may be in the liminoid realm of avant-garde performance that voices can be reimagined inside the frame of performance, as a means of exploring new forms of expression in life. This thesis comes out of my own experience as a performer and is informed both by theoretical discourse and practical experimentation in the theatre. Exploring the voice as a liminal, transgressive force requires analysis from an experiential perspective.

This practice-led thesis situates the experimental novella Gaudy Bauble within the context of interdisciplinary approaches to experimentation which cross the arts, humanities, literature and sciences. The novella and thesis develop a queer avant-garde poetics and writing methodology that I have called transliteracy. Transliteracy builds on my situated and embodied writing practice as a queer identified novelist and nonnative English speaker. I have mobilised the perceived 'otherness' of English to produce narratively and linguistically experimental prose fictions (Waidner, 2010, 2011). Transliteracy develops this practice by sharing agency (the capacity to influence the narrative) across assemblages of human and nonhuman, fictional and real, material and semiotic 'actors', to use the philosopher of science Bruno Latour's (1987, 1999) term for participants in action and process. Transliteracy has allowed me to subvert normative versions of authorship, intentionality, causality, and process in Gaudy Bauble, and to produce a radically subverted version of a plot that is intelligible and captivating to the reader. Gaudy Bauble inaugurates a genre I have called agential realist fiction, which is original in its genre-bending, gender-bending, interdisciplinary and queer avant-garde orientation. The practice was further shaped according to a generative constraint, which dictated that the most marginal actors on and beyond the page were made relevant for the plot. This conceptual apparatus is also reflected in the novella's narrative as a 'not quite' detective story: Gaudy Bauble stages what happens if previously inconsequential actors are allowed to become effectual, rather than actions located within a conventional protagonist. Enacting an "insurrection of subjugated knowledges" (Foucault, 1980, p. 81) in fiction, Gaudy Bauble stages a landscape of reversed power relations, a locally subverted surface of emergence in fiction, where radically nonnormative phenomena and imaginaries can come into being. The thesis connects transliteracy to a wider political LGBTQI+ project and agenda.

Les plantes sont des organismes immobiles qui doivent répondre et s’adapter à des contraintes abiotiques et biotiques. Parmi les stress biotiques, les maladies virales, établies ou émergentes, peuvent être responsables de pertes de rendement majeures aux conséquences économiques importantes. Face aux phytovirus la lutte génétique constitue le moyen de lutte le plus efficace, le plus respectueux de l’environnement et du consommateur. Comprendre l’interaction entre les plantes et les virus reste indispensable pour rechercher de nouvelles sources de résistances. Ce travail de thèse s’intéresse à l’étude du pathosystème naturel Arabidopis thaliana/Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). Les essais ont été menés majoritairement en conditions extérieures permettant une analyse de l’interaction dans un environnement multistress. La réponse d’A. thaliana a été explorée par l’étude de traits liés à la maladie et par la variation en métabolites primaires et secondaires. Ce travail a permis i) de caractériser de façon fine la réponse d’A. thaliana au TuMV en conditionsmultistress en exploitant la diversité naturelle d’une population mondiale et française ii) de déterminer l’architecture génétique de cette interaction par des approches de génétique d’association et de QTL mapping. Plusieurs nouveaux loci potentiellement impliqués dans la réponse ont été identifiés iii) de montrer l’intérêt du phénotypage métabolique pour discriminer les accessions en fonction de leur sensibilité au TuMV. La multidisciplinarité des approches constitue la richesse de ce travail de thèse qui contribue à une meilleure caractérisation et compréhension de la réponse des plantes lors d’une infection virale
Plants are immobile organisms which have to adapt to abiotic and biotic constraints. Among bioticstress, established or emerging viral diseases, may be responsible for major yield losses withsignificant consequences. Genetic control is the most effective, environmentally and consumerfriendlyway to control viral infections. Understanding plant/virus interactions remains essential tosearch for new sources of resistance. This work, focuses on the study of the natural pathosystemArabidopsis thaliana/Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). Most of the trials were conducted in commongarden conditions allowing the analysis of the interaction in a multistress environment. A. thaliana’sresponse was explored through the study of disease-related traits and the variations in primary andsecondary metabolites. This work allows i) the fine characterization of A. thaliana’s response toTuMV in multistress conditions through the exploration of the natural diversity of a world and Frenchpopulation ii) to determine the genetic architecture of this interaction by genome wide associationsand QTL mapping. Several new loci potentially involved in the response have been identified iii) tohighlight the interest of metabolic phenotyping to discriminate accessions according to theirsusceptibility to TuMV. The multidisciplinary approaches contribute to a better characterization andunderstanding of plant-virus interaction

My dissertation examines the experimental poetry of three periods, the historical avant-garde of the 1920s, the neo-avant-gardes of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, and the digital avant-garde (from the 1990s until the present), drawing on the works of poets from the Luso-Hispanic world including the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. Scholars such as Renato Poggioli and Peter Bürger define the avant-garde as radically new and unrepeatable, an "advanced" guard that exhausted its aesthetic and political possibilities. I challenge this view by establishing a continuity of avant-gardes that emerge during periods of technological innovation and cultural exchange, introducing new artistic modalities, engaging with emerging media and re-purposing the strategies of past avant-gardes to their own historical conditions. Experimental poetic practices such as visual, kinetic, phonetic, concrete, video poetry, and poetic performance have unfolded over time and across national boundaries in response to global, social, and technological forces. My focus is on poetry broadly understood as works that "experiment" with the interplay between the visual, the sonorous and the verbal, questioning both genre and medium specificity, and contesting traditional discipline-bound tools of analysis. In order to critically approach poems that are often not printed on a page, and depend on more than verbal communication, I draw on disciplines such as literary analysis--including close-readings--media theory, and film analysis, and deploy theories of metaphor, embodiment and affect to interpret works that focus on the materiality of language through typographic experiments, script animation, and performance. The selection includes poems by authors from the 1920s such as Josep M. Junoy, Joan Salvat-Papasseit, José Juan Tablada, Guilherme de Almeida; neo-avant-garde visual and concrete poets from the 1960s such as Joan Brossa, Julio Campal, Edgardo Vigo, and Décio Pignatari; and their contemporary counterparts working with digital media such as Ana María Uribe, Olga Delgado, María Mencía, Arnaldo Antunes, and Eduardo Kac. Examining digital poetry in the light of older poetic practices, I compare and contrast how artists have queried the status of literature as a purely script-based art, considering how notions of experimental literature have changed through time (diachronically), but also isolate each period (synchronically).

À sa création en 1944 l’Institute of Design de Chicago (ID) s’inscrit dans une continuité avec le New Bauhaus (1937-1938) et la School of Design (1939-44), deux institutions dirigées par László Moholy-Nagy, ancien professeur au Bauhaus allemand. L’ID ouvre véritablement le chapitre américain de son histoire en intégrant en 1945 un programme exclusivement consacré à la photographie. Le département photographique de l’ID est-il parvenu malgré le poids de son héritage à produire une nouvelle vision pédagogique et artistique ? Cette thèse propose, à partir d’archives inédites, d’œuvres et de témoignages d’élèves et de professeurs, de questionner l’influence de ce département sur l’enseignement de la photographie et sa reconnaissance en tant qu’art aux États-Unis. Le premier chapitre retrace le passage de témoin entre les avant-gardes européennes et une nouvelle génération américaine qui utilise l’approche expérimentale de Moholy-Nagy pour construire une vision documentaire de la ville de Chicago. In 1944 the Institute of Design in Chicago (ID) opened as the continuation of the New Bauhaus (1937-1938) and the School of Design (1939-1944), both institutions founded by László Moholy-Nagy, former professor at the German Bauhaus. The ID began a new chapter in 1945 by creating a program exclusively dedicated to photography. How did the department of photography despite the weight of its heritage develop a unique pedagogy and artistic vision? Through unpublished archives, photographs, and testimonies of students and professors, this dissertation offers to interrogate the department’s impact on photography education and on photography’s recognition as an art in the United States. The first chapter retraces the hand-over from the European avant-gardes to a new American generation who used the experimental approach of Moholy-Nagy to build a documentary vision of the city of Chicago. The second chapter shows how the department established its artistic legitimacy under the direction of two great American photographers, Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. The third chapter demonstrates how the department became a model for photography education. However, with the terrific recognition of the program the ID stopped to be an exception. The students, in becoming professors in other American universities, « normalized » the revolutionary methods of the ID. Alan Burns was one of the key figures in the group of experimental writers working in Britain in the nineteen sixties and early nineteen seventies, which included writers such as B.S. Johnson, Christine Brooke-Rose, Ann Quin and Giles Gordon. All of them sought ways to update and radicalize the techniques of modernism to make them relevant for their contemporary situation. Alan Burns took the novel to more radical extremes than his counterparts, eschewing traditional narrative in favour of a dense accumulation of detail. This is the first full length study of Burns' work, which has largely been neglected by scholars and, for the most part, remains out of print. I provide a thorough account of Burns' life and work and theorise the reasons for his obscurity. I examine the role of trauma in his work. For Burns the experience of the traumatic moment is one in which the violence that underpins everyday society is momentarily unveiled, the sheer and explicit violence of the event produces a rupture that displays the deeper and more insidious violence that exists beneath it and gives it structure. I draw on theories of visual art, music and cinema, both of the 'classical' avant-garde and more recent, as much as of literature and philosophy, to attempt to account for the strategies, techniques and approaches that Alan Burns engaged with in his writing. Avowedly left-wing, in interviews Burns is frequently optimistic about the possibility for political change in the world, and is even confident about the role that literature can play in fostering that change. However, I argue that his novels present a rather different, and much more pessimistic picture: each of them shows the way in which any activism can ultimately be constrained and co-opted.

O Rotting Sun is a pair of long narrative poems that leap, spanning over an epic-length manuscript—175 pages of prose block, lyrical verse, and projective verse. Its chief poetic-operational modes are: inclusion, fragmentation, textual destructions, intentional omissions, intentional misspelling, large narrative leaps; all of which engage a poetics of doubt and multiplicity. O Rotting Sun is a jarring and jangly poem of resistance, intended if possible, for being read aloud and argued with: a provocation of intense meditation, reflection, and when successful, disintegration of anger & agonism—followed by a reintegration of the reader back into a community of change and hope. These poems are an invitation to that hero’s journey which is sometimes painful, sometimes beautiful, sometimes both. I wish to welcome my heroic, wonderful, deep reader into this new world of O Rotting Sun.

The “Trečias frontas” journal (1930-1931) and its group have a wide historiographical layer. Nevertheless, there is a possibility to recreate wider context of the group’s activities and analyse this in the connection with activities of some artists and theatre actors. Therefore, this phenomenon could be named as the “experiment of revolutionary culture” and dated between 1927 and 1935. About twenty persons became the object of this research. Reconstruction of group members’ biographies in comparative mode reveals close personal ties and communication networks which affected political-social visions and were the core of complex public activities. Majority of the group members’ tried to become communist fellow-travellers. The corpus of Lithuanian Communist party leadership has had diverse attitudes towards these attempts and that initiated internal conflicts. Nevertheless, prevailed negative position and attempts failed. Minority of these revolutionary culture sympathizers became nonmarxist socialism supporters and their activities were especially difficult because of emigration and imprisonments. Existing historiography emphasizes these group members’ connections with communists. The perspective of this research is more about the difficult path of going left. Untapped archival material and its abundance enabled to enrich the existing historical narrative with new facts, characters, wider contexts, different perspectives and fresh analysis of their activities.

Jų biogramų lyginamoji rekonstrukcija atskleidė išskirtinę draugystės ryšių įtaką politinių-socialinių pažiūrų tapsmui bei viešajai veiklai. Dauguma šios grupės narių mėgino tapti komunistų pakeleiviais. Lietuvos komunistų partijos vadovybė Maskvoje ir Lietuvoje nesutarė kaip vertinti šį šliejimąsi. Visgi nulėmė neigiamos nuostatos ir šliejimosi pastangos buvo sužlugdytos. Šis aspektas esamoje istoriografijoje nebuvo iki šiol atskleistas. Mažuma analizuojamos grupės aktyvistų tapo nemarksistinio socializmo šalininkais, o jų išskirtinai sunki veikla buvo paženklinta emigracijos ir kalėjimo bausmių. Egzistuojanti istoriografija pabrėžia trečiafrontininkų komunistinio pakeleiviavimo aspektą, bet šiame tyrime analizuojamų personažų atžvilgiu laikomasi platesnės kairėjimo perspektyvos. Taigi, iki šiol tyrinėtojų nepanaudotos archyvinės medžiagos gausa leido papildyti trečiafrontininkų istorijas naujais faktais, įvesti naujų personažų, išplėsti kontekstus bei siūlyti naujus jų veiklos vertinimus.

At broad scales, community ecologists study how biogeographic factors like environmental dissimilarity and geographic distance influence community assembly and composition. At small scales, community ecologists study how one or several species interact to determine habitat partitioning and coexistence. In this dissertation, I present studies at both scales. Chapter One investigates community assembly across the Caribbean, Central, and South American radiations of Anolis lizards and Eleutherodactylid frogs to test whether oceanic islands are unique in their assembly processes. Such uniqueness is suggested by high levels of endemism on islands; however, comparable levels of endemism can be found in mainland communities. I modeled the rate of species turnover between mainland communities, with respect to geographic distance and environmental dissimilarity, and then used the mainland model to predict turnover among islands. Turnover among island communities was significantly higher than predicted from the mainland model, confirming the long-held but untested assumption that island assemblages accumulate biodiversity differently than their mainland counterparts. Chapter Two reviews the evidence for ecological character displacement (ECD), an evolutionary process whereby two resource competitors diverge from one another in phenotype and resource use, facilitating coexistence in a community. I find that, despite current scientific opinion, the evidence for ECD is equivocal; most cases of ECD pattern fail to rule out processes alternative to resource competition that could create the same pattern. I conclude that better evidence may come from real time tests of ECD. Chapters Three and Four describe just such a test in small island populations of Anolis carolinensis. In Chapter Three, I find that small island populations of A. carolinensis that have come into sympatry with a novel competitor, the invasive A. sagrei, shift their habitat use to become more arboreal, compared to allopatric populations. Consistent with prediction, individuals from sympatric populations have larger toepads with additional adhesive scales - a common adaptation to arboreality in Anolis. In Chapter Four, I describe a common garden experiment that finds that the observed toepad divergence is an evolved response, suggesting rates of divergence for toepad area and scale number on par with well known examples of contemporary evolution.

This analysis of the narrative/anti-narrative debate in avant-garde film theory and praxis is contextualized in terms of the developments in Modernism in the visual and plastic arts. The problems raised by the aesthetic strategies formal autonomy versus narrative appropriation are explored by examining several discrete historical paradigms rather than following a strict linear historical chronology of the development of Modernism and avant-garde practices. Therefore the late 1930's East/West debates between the four writers associated with the Frankfurt school were discussed because their discourses reveal a spectrum of possibilities which span each end of this polarized autonomy/efficacy argument. The discourses look at the issues of production aesthetics and reception aesthetics also. Within the parameters of East/West debates, the positioning of the subject in terms of "distracted habit" or "praxis" are critical considerations to a reception aesthetic. Another historical paradigm for this debate was the writing and film practice which emerged from the nexus of the events of May 1968. The East/West debates informed this writing and the development of the aesthetic questions raised by Peter Wollen in the "Two Avant-Gardes." Here the important issues of materialism, ontology, and the development of human perception are raised. The return to narrative is represented by the "second" avant-garde's film practice (Godard, Straub etc.) and informs the issues of new narrative in feminist film practices. This is narrative with a difference however. Here questions of language and the production of culture are critically examined and naturally the narrative/anti-narrative debate continues. Finally, these issues are brought foreword to the contemporary context and related specifically to the production of avant-garde film in Canada. One can see this contemporary debate in light of the past, however, the conclusions drawn by the thesis do not presume to resolve the narrative/anti-narrative debate or prescribe one particular approach, since this will arise from actual practice. The intention of the study is to introduce the central issues raised by social commitment/artistic autonomy and contribute to a better understanding of theoretical and practical implications of the debate over the use of narrative.

Resumo: Na segunda metade do Século XX, em especial nas décadas de 1960 e 1970, artistas e intelectuais discutiram calorosamente acerca da relação entre a atuação poética (criativa) do artista e sua influência no campo político e ideológico social. Nesse contexto, o compositor inglês Cornelius Cardew (1936 - 1981) se destacou por desenvolver um trabalho composicional e teórico contundente, crítico e autocrítico sobre a vanguarda musical e sua dimensão ideológica. Transitou entre duas das mais influentes orientações estéticas da segunda metade do Século XX, a música de vanguarda e a música politicamente engajada, ambas fundamentais na construção de chaves de leitura acerca da relação entre o compositor e a sociedade ocidental capitalista. Cardew se dedicou no decorrer de toda a década de 1960 na criação e divulgação de obras diretamente influenciadas pela escola americana experimental. Compôs obras que trabalhavam com a aleatoriedade, a improvisação (The Great Learning, Schooltime Compositions, etc.) e a notação gráfica, dentre essas, Treatise (1963-7) se destaca. Em 1969, ainda ligado às diretrizes aleatórias e ritualísticas da escola americana, o compositor fundou a orquestra experimental Scratch Orchestra (1969-74). Abstract: In the second half of the twentieth century, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, artists and intellectuals intensify argued about the relationship between the poetic (creative) performance of the artist and his influence on the political and ideological social field. In this context, the English composer Cornelius Cardew (1936 - 1981) stood out for developing a compelling, critical and self-critical compositional and theoretical body of work about the musical avant-garde and its ideological dimension. He transited between two of the most influential aesthetic orientations of the second half of the twentieth century, avant-garde music and politically engaged music, both fundamental in the construction of reading about the relationship between the composer and western capitalist society. Throughout the 1960s, Cardew devoted himself in the creation and dissemination of works directly influenced by the experimental American school. He composed works that worked with randomness, improvisation (The Great Learning, Schooltime Compositions, etc.) and the graphic notation - among these, Treatise (1963-7) stands out. In 1969, still attached to the random approach and ritualistic directives of the American school, the composer founded the experimental orchestra Scratch Orchestra (1969-74). This thesis contains the results of a biocultural conservation research conducted between 2008 and 2011 in home gardens in Vall Fosca, Catalan Pyrenees, northeastern Spain. Vall Fosca is a valley where traditional agroecosystems still survive, but whose inhabitants are divided in defining the most suitable development model for the region. This dissertation examines the existence of landraces and knowledge associated with them in a rural area in an industrialized country. It shows who preserves landraces and why they do so. It also estimates the association between individual centrality in the network of seed exchange and conservation of landraces and associated knowledge. This thesis also discusses the ecosystem services provided by home gardens, as well as the differences between men and women when assessing these ecosystem services. The results establish the existence of landraces and knowledge associated with them in a rural area in an industrialized country. Specifically, my results show the existence of 39 landraces belonging to 31 species, in home gardens with a variety of 148 different species. Women, people over 65 years of age, experienced gardeners and people who grow the garden with organic techniques conserve more landraces than people without these characteristics. Also people who have a more active role in the seed exchange network and have higher levels of intermediation in the network retain more landraces and traditional knowledge than people who have a more passive role in social networks of seed exchange. Home gardens provide a wide range of services, often not very prominent in the literature on ecosystem services. Among these, cultural services are the most appreciated. In this regard, an interesting contribution of this work is that the most valued home garden ecosystem services differ significantly from the services provided by other farming systems. Another interesting contribution of this work is that women value the ecosystem services more than men. The explanation for this finding is part of the socialization theory that assigns women roles on family care and protection. My analysis provides new data that facilitate the understanding of the relationship between pro-environmental attitudes and gender socialization. This thesis has found that home gardens and landraces are symbols of cultural identity in the valley and that both permanent residents and visitors consider that home gardens are key elements in the landscape of the valley and should be preserved as part of biocultural heritage. In addition, the ecosystem services provided by the home gardens, particularly the cultural services, can help develop relations between people, relations that might contribute to strengthening cultural identity and to create bonds of respect with the environment. The results of this thesis can contribute to make biocultural diversity visible in the valley and generate endogenous rural development models based on the sustainable exploitation of ecosystem services generated by traditional agroecosystems. La presente tesis recoge una investigación en conservación biocultural realizada entre el 2008 y el 2011 en los huertos domésticos de la Vall Fosca en el Pirineo catalán, nordeste de España. La Vall Fosca es un valle en el que aún perviven agroecosistemas tradicionales, pero que se encuentra dividido a la hora de definir el modelo de desarrollo más deseable. Esta tesis analiza la existencia de cultivos de manejo local y el conocimiento asociado a ellos en un área rural de un país industrializado; muestra quién y por qué se conservan los cultivos de manejo local; y estima la asociación entre la centralidad individual en la red de intercambio de semillas y la conservación de los cultivos de manejo local y su conocimiento asociado. En esta tesis también se analizan los servicios ambientales proporcionados por los huertos domésticos, así como las diferencias entre hombres y mujeres en el momento de valorar estos servicios ambientales. Los resultados del análisis establecen la existencia de cultivos de manejo local y el conocimiento asociado a ellos en un área rural de un país industrializado. Específicamente mis resultados muestran la existencia de 39 cultivos de manejo local correspondientes a 31 especies, en huertos con una diversidad de 148 especies diferentes. Las mujeres, las personas de más de 65 años de edad, los hortelanos con experiencia, y la gente que cultiva el huerto con técnicas orgánicas mantienen más cultivos de manejo local que las personas sin estas características. Asimismo las personas que tienen un papel más activo en las redes de intercambio de semillas y que tienen mayores niveles de intermediación en la red, también conservan más cultivos de manejo local y tienen mayor conocimiento tradicional que las personas que tienen un papel más pasivo en las redes sociales. Los huertos domésticos proporcionan un amplio abanico de servicios, a menudo poco destacados en la literatura. Entre estos, los servicios culturales son los más apreciados. Un aporte interesante en este sentido es que los servicios de los huertos domésticos más valorados difieren significativamente de los servicios proporcionados por otros sistemas agrícolas. Otro aporte interesante de este trabajo es que las mujeres valoran los servicios ambientales más que los hombres. La explicación a este hallazgo se enmarca en la teoría de la socialización, que asigna a las mujeres papeles de cuidado y protección. Este análisis aporta nuevos datos que facilitan el entendimiento de la relación entre actitudes pro-ambientales y la socialización de género. En esta tesis se ha podido comprobar que los huertos y los cultivos de manejo local son símbolos de identidad cultural en el valle y que tanto los habitantes permanentes como los visitantes consideran que los huertos son elementos clave en el paisaje del valle y que se deberían preservar como parte de su patrimonio biocultural. Además, los servicios ambientales proporcionados por los huertos, en particular los culturales, pueden ayudar a tejer relaciones entre las personas que contribuyan a fortalecer la identidad cultural y a crear lazos de respeto con su medio ambiente. Los resultados de esta tesis pueden contribuir a visibilizar la diversidad biocultural del valle y generar modelos endógenos de desarrollo rural basados en la explotación sostenible de los servicios ambientales generados por los agroecosistemas tradicionales. La Vall Fosca és una vall en la qual encara perviuen agroecosistemes tradicionals, però que es troba dividida a l'hora de definir el model de desenvolupament més desitjable. Aquesta tesi analitza l'existència de cultius de gestió local i el coneixement associat a ells en una àrea rural d'un país industrialitzat; mostra qui i per què es conserven els cultius de gestió local, i estima l'associació entre la centralitat individual a la xarxa d’ intercanvi de llavors i la conservació dels cultius de gestió local i el seu coneixement associat. En aquesta tesi també s'analitzen els serveis ambientals proporcionats pels horts domèstics, així com les diferències entre homes i dones en el moment de valorar aquests serveis ambientals. Els resultats de l'anàlisi estableixen l'existència de cultius de gestió local i el coneixement associat a ells en una àrea rural d'un país industrialitzat. Específicament els meus resultats mostren l'existència de 39 cultius de gestió local corresponents a 31 espècies, en horts amb una diversitat de 148 espècies diferents. Una aportació interessant en aquest sentit és que els serveis dels horts domèstics més valorats difereixen significativament dels serveis proporcionats per altres sistemes agrícoles. Un altre aportació interessant d'aquest treball és que les dones valoren els serveis ambientals més que els homes. L'explicació a aquesta troballa s'emmarca en la teoria de la socialització, que assigna a les dones papers de cura i protecció. Aquesta anàlisi aporta noves dades que faciliten l'enteniment de la relació entre actituds pro-ambientals i la socialització de gènere. En aquesta tesi s'ha pogut comprovar que els horts i els conreus de gestió local són símbols d'identitat cultural a la vall i que tant els habitants permanents com els visitants consideren que els horts són elements clau en el paisatge de la vall i que s'haurien preservar com a part del seu patrimoni biocultural. A més, els serveis ambientals proporcionats pels horts, en particular els culturals, poden ajudar a teixir relacions entre les persones que contribueixin a enfortir la identitat cultural i a crear llaços de respecte amb el seu medi ambient. Els resultats d'aquesta tesi poden contribuir a visibilitzar la diversitat biocultural de la vall i generar models endògens de desenvolupament rural basats en l'explotació sostenible dels serveis ambientals generats pels agroecosistemes tradicionals. Resumo: O seguinte trabalho tem por objetivo abordar a natureza da música humorística em Erik Satie, sua aplicação, função e caráter estético. Para isto, através de sua obra musical, seus escritos, estudos acadêmicos realizados sobre o compositor, relatos e críticas musicais da época, buscou-se, inicialmente, reconstruir a lógica pessoal e composicional do compositor, ambas inerentes. Em seguida, a fim de tornar possível uma análise adequada do humor em suas obras, procurou-se, através da reflexão existente sobre o tema no âmbito da filosofia, atribuir uma definição clara e prática da natureza do humor, do riso, assim como, determinar a gênese de sua má reputação. A partir disto, com base no conceito de humor e em textos musicológicos sobre a música humorística, desenvolvemos um aparato técnico de reconhecimento e aplicabilidade do humor no âmbito da música. Com este referencial teórico em mãos, fez-se possível a análise da aplicação e função do humor em quinze conjuntos de peças humorísticas do compositor: Gnossiennes; Pièces Froides; Troix Morceaux en forme de Poire; Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Véritables Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Descriptions Automatiques; Croquis et Agaceries d'un Gros Bonhomme en Bois; Embryons Desséchés; Chapitres Tournés en Tous Sens; Vieux Sequins et Vieilles Curaisses; Choses Vues à droite et à gauche; Heures Séculaires et Instantanées; Trois Valses distinguées de précieux dégoûté; Avant-dernières Pensées; e Sonatine Bureaucratique. Abstract: The following work aims to approach the nature of Erik Satie‟s humorous music, its application, role played and aesthetical disposition. In order to do this, we sought, initially, through his musical works, writings, academical studies about the composer, reports and musical criticism at the time, to rebuild his personal and compositional logic, both inherent. Thereafter, for the purpose of making an appropriated analysis of humor in his works, we searched, through the existing reflection on the subject in the field of philosophy, to ascribe a clear and practical definition upon the nature of humor, laughter, as well as to determine the genesis of its bad reputation. Thus, based on the concept of humor and in musicological texts about humorous music, we developed a technical apparatus of recognition and application of humor in the musical‟s scope. With that theoretical referential in hands, it was made possible an analysis of the applicat ion and function of humor in fifteen groups of humorous pieces written by the composer: Gnossiennes; Pièces Froides; Troix Morceaux en forme de Poire; Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Véritables Préludes Flasques (Pour un Chien); Descriptions Automatiques; Croquis et Agaceries d‟un Gros Bonhomme en Bois; Embryons Desséchés; Chapitres Tournés en Tous Sens; Vieux Sequins et Vieilles Curaisses; Choses Vues à droite et à gauche; Heures Séculaires et Instantanées; Trois Valses distinguées de précieux dégoûté; Avant-dernières Pensées; and Sonatine Bureaucratique. Subsequently, through humorous articles published by Satie and critics published on the composer, we made a comparative analysis of the countercriticism role played by Erik Satie‟s humor against the canon and tradition. In 1969 the film critic P.A.Sitney said that, suddenly, a cinema structure "had emerged." Although imprecise, his observations were responsible for triggering a long process of discussions about a kind of cinema that, in general, was characterized by self-reflectiveness and antiillusionist processes. The exploration of the filmstrip's materiality, of the alternative projection and camera-capture methods, of the different editing processes and articulation between sound and image, as well as a number of other procedures that called attention to the cinematic structure, were taken as central features of those "structural films." In the search of a genealogical approach of the facts and building on key authors of the genealogical method, especially Nietzsche and Benjamin, alongside with the help of historicaldocumentary data, this research has made clear that the emergence of a dedicated cinematography to its own structure, had derived from a historical development marked by the emancipation of cinema as art, as well as from the development for developing alternatives to the set of cinematic codes agreed by the film industry. From the avant-garde of the 1920s to the artistic movements of the postwar 1950s, the will to acquire an "essential cinematic language have mobilized artists and filmmakers to produce experimental works that questioned such codes, giving rise to the structural films. New York, London and Vienna, altogether saw the development of a filmic production that prioritized to discuss the structural basis of cinematic experience and cinematic discourse from the visual perception phenomena, to cognitive processes during the view. Heterogeneously, the so-called structural works not only cast new light on the film practice itself, expanding its limits; but also demonstrated the possibility of using cinema as an useful instrument for philosophical speculation. Making "films about films", the structural filmmakers completed the avant-garde project of employing film as an autonomous art-form, turning its attention to its own structure, and thereby making the structure of things, the man and his thought more and more visible
Em 1969 o critico de cinema P.A.Sitney alertou para o fato de que, de súbito, um cinema da estrutura havia emergido . Apesar de imprecisas, suas observacões foram responsáveis por desencadear um longo processo de discussões acerca de um tipo de cinema que, em sintese, caracterizava-se por ser auto-reflexivo e anti-ilusionista. A exploracao da materialidade da pelicula fotoquimica, dos métodos alternativos de projecao e captacao, dos sistemas matemáticos de montagem e articulacao entre som e imagem, bem como de uma série de outros procedimentos que chamavam a atencao para a estrutura do cinematografo, foram tomados como caracteristicas centrais daqueles filmes estruturais . Buscando uma visao genealogica dos fatos e tomando como base autores fundamentais do método genealogico, especialmente Nietzsche e Benjamin, aliados a investigacao de dados historico-documentais, esta pesquisa tornou explicito que a emergencia de uma cinematografia voltada para sua propria estrutura derivou do desdobramento historico de um processo marcado pela emancipacao do cinema como arte e, consequentemente, pela elaboracao de alternativas ao conjunto de codigos convencionados pela indústria cinematográfica. Das vanguardas da década de 1920 aos movimentos artisticos do pos-guerra dos anos 1950, a vontade pela aquisicao de uma linguagem essencialmente cinematográfica mobilizou artistas e cineastas a produzirem obras experimentais que problematizaram tais codigos, fazendo emergir o cinema estrutural. A partir de Nova Iorque, Londres e Viena, desenvolveu-se um tipo de producao que priorizou discutir as bases constituintes da experiencia e do discurso cinematográfico - da percepcao visual aos processos cognitivos. De modo heterogeneo, as chamadas obras estruturais nao apenas lancaram novas luzes sobre o proprio fazer-cinema, expandindo seus limites; mas também demonstraram a possibilidade de utilizá-lo como um meio útil para a especulacao filosofica. La thèse, intitulée « L’Avant-Postman: James Joyce, L’Avant-Garde et le Postmoderne », s’efforce de construire une généalogie littéraire post-joycienne, centrée sur les notions de l’avant-garde joycienne et de l’expérimentation littéraire, et prend les deux dernières œuvres de Joyce, Ulysses et Finnegans Wake, pour points de départ des avant-gardes d’après la seconde guerre mondiale, une époque généralement appelée « postmoderne », en Grande-Bretagne, aux États-Unis, et en France.L’Introduction identifie la notion d’une avant-garde joycienne à l'exploration, par Joyce, de la matérialité du langage et l’identification de sa dernière œuvre, le « Work in Progress », à la « Révolution du mot », défendue par Eugène Jolas dans sa revue transition. L’exploration joycienne de la matérialité du langage se comprend selon trois orientations : l'écriture conçue comme une trace physique, susceptible d’être distordue ou effacée ; le lan-gage littéraire compris comme une forgerie des mots des autres ; le projet de la création d’un idiome personnel, défini comme un langage « autonome », qui doit être caractéristique de la littérature vraiment moderne.La thèse est divisée en huit chapitres, deux pour la Grande-Bretagne (de B.S. The thesis, entitled “The Avant-Postman: James Joyce, the Avant-Garde and Postmodern-ism,” attempts to construct a post-Joycean literary genealogy centred around the notions of a Joycean avant-garde and literary experimentation written in its wake. It considers the last two works by Joyce, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, as points of departure for the post-war literary avant-gardes in Great Britain, the USA, and France, in a period generally called “postmodern.”The introduction bases the notion of a Joycean avant-garde upon Joyce’s sustained explora-tion of the materiality of language and upon the appropriation of his last work, his “Work in Progress,” for the cause of the “Revolution of the word” conducted by Eugene Jolas in his transition magazine. The Joycean exploration of the materiality of language is considered as comprising three stimuli: the conception of writing as physical trace, susceptible to distortion or effacement; the understanding of literary language as a forgery of the words of others; and the project of creating a personal idiom as an “autonomous” language for a truly modern literature.The material is divided into eight chapters, two for Great Britain (from B.S. Johnson via Brooke-Rose to Iain Sinclair), two for the U.S. (from Burroughs and Gass to Acker and Sorrentino) and three for France (the nouveau roman, Oulipo, and the Tel Quel group). Chapter Eight traces the Joycean heritage within the literature after 2000 of the three national literary spaces. The conclusion contextualises the theme of the Joycean post-war avant-garde as a challenge to the notion of “postmodernism.”

Videogame tinkerers, players, and activists of the 21st century are continuing, yet redefining, the avant-garde art and literary movements of the 20th century. Videogames are diverging as a social, cultural, and digital medium. They are used as political instruments, artistic experiments, social catalysts, and personal means of expression. A diverse field of games and technocultural play, such as alternate reality games, griefer attacks, arcade sculptures, and so on, can be compared and contrasted to the avant-garde, such as contemporary tactical media, net art, video art, Fluxus, the Situationists, the work of Pollock or Brecht, Dada, or the Russian Formalists. For example, historical avant-garde painters played with perspectival space (and its traditions), rather than only within those grid-like spaces. This is similar in some ways to how game artists play with flow (and player expectations of it), rather than advancing flow as the popular and academic ideal. Videogames are not only an advanced product of technoculture, but are the space in which technoculture conventionalizes play. This makes them a fascinating site to unwork and rethink the protocols and rituals that rule technoculture. It is the audacity of imagining certain videogames as avant-garde (from the perspective of mainstream consumers and art academics alike) that makes them a good candidate for this critical experiment.

Um Strommärkte so zu konzipieren damit sie sowohl zur Verringerung der Nutzung fossiler Brennstoffe als auch zur Deckung des steigenden Energiebedarfes beitragen, ist Wissen über die Präferenzen der Konsumenten notwendig. Die vorliegende kumulative Dissertation untersucht Präferenzen für Elektrizitätsattribute von privaten Haushalten und trägt zu einem tieferen Verständnis dieser in unterschiedlichen Kontextsituationen bei. Der erste Artikel betrachtet statistische Methoden um die zwei am häufigsten angewandten Modelle – das Random Parameter Logit und das Latent Class Logit Modell – zu vergleichen. Der Artikel trägt dazu bei, den Prozess der Modellwahl zu verbessern und für die angewandte Forschung im Energiebereich anzupassen. Basierend auf den empirischen Ergebnissen des ersten Artikels untersucht der zweite Artikel die Präferenzen von privaten Haushalten in Hyderabad, Indien mit besonderem Fokus auf die physische Qualität der Energieversorgung. Die Ergebnisse deuten auf eine geringe Zahlungsbereitschaft der Konsumenten hin. Jedoch unterscheiden sich die Präferenzen der Haushalte. Die Artikel 3 und 4 basieren auf Datenerhebungen in Deutschland. Im dritten Artikel werden die Präferenzen privater Haushalte hinsichtlich der Organisationsform von Stromanbietern untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Kunden bereit sind mehr zu zahlen, wenn die Stromversorgung von Genossenschaften oder Stadtwerken übernommen wird. Der vierte Artikel betrachtet die Erfolgsfaktoren von Energiegenossenschaften in Deutschland. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Governance des Stromanbieters die Zahlungsbereitschaft für Strom beeinflussen. Insbesondere Genossenschaften werden den großen Privatunternehmen und Aktiengesellschaften vorgezogen.
In order to design electricity markets to simultaneously reduce the share of fossil fuels in energy production and meet the increasing demand for electricity, knowledge on consumer preferences is necessary. The goal of this cumulative dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of preferences of private households for electricity supply attributes in different contexts. In Paper 1 I review statistical methods to compare two frequently applied models, the random parameters logit and the latent class logit. The methods presented here can be readily used by other researchers and practitioners to better understand model performance which ultimately contributes to improving model choice in applied energy research. Based on the empirical findings of Paper 1, Paper 2 identifies preferences of private households in Hyderabad in India for electricity supply quality. The results indicate that willingness to pay for improvements are, on average, rather low. However, the preferences strongly vary between subjects. Papers 3 and 4 investigate preferences of German private households. In \textbf{Paper 3}, the respondents stated their preferences for the organization of the electricity distribution company under different renewable energy scenarios. It turned out that most people are willing to pay more for electricity supplied by municipally-owned companies and cooperatives. This additional willingness to pay increases disproportionally when the share of renewable energy is high. The paper identifies non-profit orientated distribution companies as potential drivers of the energy transition. Paper 4 investigates the determinants for the success of energy cooperatives in Germany. The results indicate that the governance of distribution companies impacts the choices of private households for electricity supply contracts. Especially, people preferred cooperative-like governance attributes.

The following paper will deal with the actantial place of memory and history in the works of Ge Fei, a so-called avant-garde writer in China. Analyzing his three major novels published in the nineteen-nineties, as well as an earlier short story, the paper will discuss how Ge Fei renegotiates the status and place of the literary subject as configured through the act of writing, and its close relationship with the medium of memory and history. Contrary to the prevailing opinion, the avant-garde experiment in Ge Fei's works does not intimate the dissipation of the subject, but rather assists in reconfiguring it in an entirely new and dynamic conceptualization. Instead of a figural e/End and vulgarization of literature in the nineties, Ge Fei's experimentation with the acts of writing and reading, as well as his play with language, open up new possibilities for the writing of new literatures in contemporary China.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Insets of large anhedral minerals in kimberlites are proposed to mainly have their origin from the disaggregation of mantle-derived xenoliths through mechanical abrasion by the ascending kimberlite magma. Garnet, despite being an important constituent of both mantle-derived peridotite and eclogite, forms only a minor constituent of kimberlites. This suggests that a large proportion of garnet liberated into the kimberlite through the disaggregation of such xenoliths, is consumed before the emplacement of kimberlite. This study records the breakdown mechanism of garnet by the ascending kimberlite magma by conducting experiments between pressures of 2 and 4 GPa and temperatures between 1100 and 1300°C. The starting material used in the experiments was prepared from a natural hypabyssal kimberlite that closely resembles the composition of a proposed primary Group I kimberlite magma. To the kimberlite material 5 wt % garnet, sourced from a natural peridotite, was added. It was found that garnet is not a stable equilibrium phase within the kimberlite magma under the investigated temperature and pressure conditions. Based on large volumes of phlogopite in the experiments it is concluded that garnet melts incongruently in the kimberlite magma to form phlogopite as a peritectic product and melts transitional in composition between silicate and carbonate melts. This is in contrast to more SiO2 -rich melt compositions produced as a consequence of the incongruent breakdown of both orthopyroxene and omphacite within kimberlite magmas. The consequence of the melt compositions produced in the experiments is increased solubility of CO2 in the form of carbonate (CO32-). This finding has implications for both kimberlite ascent mechanisms and the solubility of diamond transported within kimberlite magmas.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit word voorgestel dat groot oneenvormige mineraalinsluitsels in kimberliet hoofsaaklik afkomstig is van xenolitiese mantelmateriaal wat verbrokkel weens die meganiese werking van die stygende kimberliet magma. Die bevinding het nagevolge vir beide kimberliet stygingsmeganismes asook die oplosbaarheid van diamant tydens die vervoer van diamant deur kimberliet magmas.

Tina Landau's writing and directing work has gained increasing prominence over the last decade. She has made strides in both the experimental and the musical theater arenas, and her accomplishments in each are noteworthy independent of each other. However, her concurrent interest and success in both arenas, which are commonly viewed as quite disparate, make her work particularly interesting. These interests, which might seem incongruent, are actually interrelated; her work in one area influences her work in the other, a fact which is evident both in her rehearsal process and the end products. Her experimental work has a musical sensibility and her work in musical theater is quite experimental. This thesis examines works for which she was both writer and director as representative examples: 1969, Stonewall: Night Variations, Space, Floyd Collins and Dream True. Her amalgamated sensibility results in a directing style which serves contemporary musicals, particularly "smart musicals," well.

Aquest treball s'inicià l'any 1993 al laboratori de cultiu in vitro de la Unitat de Fisiologia Vegetal de la Facultat de Biologia de la Universitat de Barcelona, i suposà la integració de dues línies ja existents en aquesta Unitat: el cultiu in vitro de material vegetal i l'ecofisiologia fotosintètica.

L'objectiu general d'aquest treball ha estat analitzar, pel cas de gardènia, la incidència de diferents paràmetres ambientals sobre el creixement, fisiologia i anatomia de les plantetes in vitro. A més, veure si les condicions que normalment s'utilitzen en el cultiu in vitro són les adequades per al creixement de les plantetes, fent èmfasi en els punts següents:

1. Avaluar l'efecte de la quantitat de sacarosa del medi de cultiu, de la llum i de la concentració de C02 dins el pot de cultiu en l'afavoriment de la fotoautotròfia de les plantetes cultivades in vitro, sobretot en les primeres fases del cultiu (estadi II i estadi III b) i en la seva aclimatació posterior (estadi IV).

2. Desenvolupar una metodologia originalment emprada en condicions naturals i basada en la composició en isòtops estables de carboni per una avaluació ràpida i senzilla de l'efecte de diferents condicions ambientals sobre el grau de fotoautotròfia de les gardènies durant la micropropagació.

3. Estudiar l'efecte de les condicions de cultiu i estadi de micropropagació en les pautes de fotoinhibició duranmt la micropropagació i posterior aclimatació ex vitro.

4. Comprovar si una tècnica d'avaluació ràpida com ara fluorescència de la clorofil·la, molt utilitzada en estudis de planta i ambient ex vitro, pot utilitzar-se per indicar l'estat fisiològic de l'aparell fotosintètic de les plantes micropropagades durant els diversos estadis del cultiu i l'aclimatació posterior.

5. Estudiar els canvis de l'anatomia i de la ultraestructura fol·liar i del contingut en pigments fotosintètics associats a les variacions de les condicions del cultiu i als estadis de desenvolupament, i comparar com es relacionen amb determinades característiques fisiològiques, com ara les taxes de fotosíntesi i de la respiració a les fosques.

Aquesta tesi es va dur a terme bàsicament en dues etapes, que a partir d'ara es descriuran com a experiment I i experiment II. S'ha estructurat en cinc apartats de resultats (els dos primers corresponen a l'experiment I i els altres tres, a l'experiment D). Són apartats independents, però relacionats entre si, i que consten d'una introducció, dels resultats i de la discussió. L'apartat corresponent al material i a la metodologia és comú a tots els resultats. Els apartats de resultats que conformen aquesta tesi estan basats en els diferents articles publicats (3), en premsa (1) i acceptat (1), enviats per la doctoranda i coautors. Això pot fer que, de vegades, certs conceptes que es desenvolupen a l'introducció general es repeteixin en alguna de les introduccions específiques de cada apartat.

Equilibrium relations between garnet and orthopyroxene have been investigated by reversal experiments in the range of 20-45Kb and 975-1400°C in the FeO-MgO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂(FMAS) system. The Fe-Mg exchange reaction seems to have little or no compositional dependence at these conditions. The experimental results can be fitted adequately by the linear relation: ln K(D) = 2243/T°K - 0.9522 at 25Kb where K(D) = (X(Fe)/X(Mg))ᴳᵗ/(X(Fe)/X(Mg))ᴼᵖˣ. Combination of the available data for the mixing properties of garnet and V° for the Fe-Mg exchange reaction with the above experimental results yields the following geothermometric expression for the common natural assemblages that can be represented essentially within the system CaO-MnO-FeO-MgO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂. T°K = (1968 + 11P(Kb) + 1510(X(Ca)+X(Mn))ᴳᵗ)/(ln K(D) + 0.9522). The stability field of pyrope+quartz, defined by the reaction pryope+quartz=opx+sill, has been calculated as a function of P,T,X(Fe)ᴳᵗ in the FMAS system using the reversal experimental data of Perkins (1983) in the MAS system, and the present data on K(D)(Fe-Mg) between garnet and orthopyroxene. This reaction is very sensitive to pressure and compositional effects. Combination of P,T conditions for the garnet stability and that defined by (K(D)(Fe-Mg))ᴳᵗ⁻ᴼᵖˣ yields a simultaneous solution for both P and T of equilibration of garnet and orthopyroxene in the presence of Al₂SiO₅ and SiO₂. The effect of FeO on Al₂O₃ solubility in orthopyroxene in equilibrium with garnet has been determined experimentally at several pressures at 975 and 1200°C. These data have been modeled to develop a thermodynamic method for the calculation of Al₂O₃ in orthopyroxene as a function of P,T and composition. The Al₂O₃ isopleths have moderate P-T slopes, and provide virtually the only means of determining the pressure of mantle derived rocks.

The ¹⁷⁶Lu-¹⁷⁶Hf and ¹⁴⁷Sm-¹⁴³Nd decay systems have been extensively used as geochronological tools to determine ages from garnet (Grt) - whole rock (WR) parent-daughter isotopic ratios; however, the ¹⁷⁶Lu-¹⁷⁶Hf age of garnet is almost always found to be significantly older than the ¹⁴⁷Sm-¹⁴³Nd age determined from the same aliquots. This dissertation presents new experimental diffusion data for Lu and Hf in garnet, and numerical simulations using these data, which explain these age discrepancies and also show that Grt-WR ¹⁷⁶Lu-¹⁷⁶Hf isochrons do not generally yield ages which correspond to an unambiguous temporal event in the evolutionary history of the host rocks. This is a result of (a) partial or complete retention of very slow-diffusing radiogenic ¹⁷⁶HF produced during prograde heating, and (b) the lower closure temperature of Lu relative to Hf; these complexities do not affect the interpretation of Grt-WR isochrons based on the ¹⁴⁷Sm-¹⁴³Nd system. In addition, the diffusion kinetic properties of Hf in clinopyroxene were experimentally determined in order to address the age controversy of the shergottite suite of Martian meteorites (~200 Ma ages determined by ¹⁷⁶Lu-¹⁷⁶Hf, ¹⁴⁷Sm-¹⁴³Nd, and various other decay systems as opposed to a ~4 Ga whole rock Pb-Pb age). This was achieved by calculating the timescales needed to re-equilibrate Hf isotopes in clinopyroxene (the primary host of rare earth elements amongst the minerals used to compose the ¹⁷⁶Lu-¹⁷⁶Hf isochrons) with the surrounding matrix at the peak- and post-shock P-T conditions likely to have been experienced by the shergottites. It is concluded that, contrary to the earlier suggestions, impact heating is highly unlikely to have significantly reset the ¹⁷⁶Lu-¹⁷⁶Hf ages of these Martian samples. These calculations are bolstered by the nature of measured Cr and Fe-Mg concentration profiles across olivine-melt boundaries, and Ti profiles across clinopyroxene-maskelynite interfaces in the shergottite RBT-04262. The lack of any evidence of diffusion in the measured concentration profiles, coupled with the qualitative incompatibility of the measured crystal-melt fractionation at these interfaces with the nature of fractionation expected from equilibrium partitioning, provides strong evidence that no substantial chemical exchange took place between the solid and melt phases during peak-shock P-T conditions.

This dissertation analyzes the institutionalization of avant-garde artistic practice within an American university, the University of Iowa between the years 1967 and 2000. In order to understand the development of the Intermedia program at Iowa, the institutional context of the "Iowa Idea" as it was developed on campus from the 1930s that emphasized the simultaneous instruction of art history and theory with instruction in the graphic and plastic arts. Following the success of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the University of Iowa received a major grant from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1970 to form the Center for New Performing Arts. Following the development from Happenings to Intermedia, and gradually into specific "disciplines" of performance art and video art, this dissertation demonstrates how the institution was inseparable from these avant-garde practices which required significant resources to develop. The importance of technology is traced through the digital revolution in the arts, and the role of "intermedia" is shown to be part of a process of changing consciousness as opposed to commonly accepted definitions of "multimedia" or Gesamtkunstwerk.

Анотація:
Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo o mapeamento do espaço que ocupa Terayama Shūji, poeta, escritor, dramaturgo e diretor de cinema japonês, frente ao período histórico a que pertenceu e frente às teorias da vanguarda e do pós-modernismo. A investigação se inicia com o período do pós-guerra no Japão, quando em meio a protestos e ansiedades políticas, floresce na capital do país uma nova vanguarda artística. O primeiro capítulo é dedicado a um exame do teatro angura e da nova onda do cinema, dois movimentos dos quais Terayama fez parte. Procura-se então delinear suas propostas artísticas e suas principais influências, japonesas e estrangeiras, examinando como seu trabalho se aproxima ou se afasta do paradigma pós-moderno conforme teorizado principalmente por Fredric Jameson, mas levando em conta reflexões sobre as aplicações desse conceito especificamente no Japão. Por fim, o último capítulo se debruçará sobre dois longas-metragens do diretor Joguem seus livros, vamos às ruas, de 1971, e Pastoral: Morrer no campo, de 1974 de modo a encontrar exemplos do seu caráter experimental, subversivo, de sua insurreição contra as instituições da família e do Estado e de suas complexas relações com a política, a história, o pastiche e a espetacularização.
This research aims at mapping the space occupied by Terayama Shūji, a Japanese poet, playwright and filmmaker, in his historical context and in relation to avant-garde and postmodernism theories. The investigation begins with postwar Tokyo, when amid protests and a climate of political anxiety, a new avant-garde movement starts to flourish. The first chapter is dedicated to an examination of the angura theatre and the Japanese new wave, two of the movements Terayama was part of. We shall then trace his general artistic views and main influences, Japanese and foreign, examining how they relate to postmodern characteristics as theorized mainly by Fredric Jameson, but also inquiring at how this very concept can apply to the Japanese context. In the last chapter, we shall take two of Terayamas feature films Throw Away Your Books, Rally In The Streets and Pastoral: To Die in The Country for further analysis, in order to find more specific examples of his experimental and subversive character, his rejection of the institutions of family and the State, and his complex relationship with politics, history, pastiche and spectacularization.

Contemporary dance and modern ballet often focus on conveying emotions through patterns of movement which may be abstract, obvious, or anywhere in between, as supported by music, sound, or spoken words that set the mood. Scenography is typically sparse or confined to the available space, leaving the dancers as the main instrument of communication. This work explores choreography and costume design, with a focus on how garments can inform and direct movement, choreography, and performance, and in turn how movement may inform and contribute to the development of dynamic garments. Through a series of live experiments, ranging from self-instigated performance/video work in collaboration with choreographers and dancers to performances of garment interaction associated with everyday life, the performative, spatial, and interactive properties of garments are explored. The results of these live experiments relate to various aspects of choreography, scenography, and performance space, and offer wide-ranging creative potential. The work shows how designers and choreographers can collaborate on performance scenarios within the context of modern ballet and contemporary dance productions, thus creating conceptual garments that influence the design, choreography, and manipulation of conceptual garments. In relation to the act of dressing and undressing, previously unseen types of garment and ways of wearing and performing were found. New models of collaborative interaction are proposed. This work has demonstrated how the agency of garments can function as a manuscript in modern dance, and how performance itself redefines the notion of wearing and the concept of garments.

Chris Marker é um cineasta que realizou documentários políticos pouco convencionais ao longo de quase sessenta anos de carreira. Depois de uma militância ativa e inserida no coração de acontecimentos cruciais na França e na Europa, e de uma carreira literária como editor, ensaísta e romancista, natural que seus filmes, vistos isoladamente, provoquem as mais equivocadas interpretações. Esta pesquisa procura, através de um levantamento de seus filmes e escritos, dos debates que foram se travando sobre a vida nacional francesa e mundial, sempre retomando os fios dos acontecimentos decisivos do período do Front Populaire (1936), da ocupação da França pelos nazistas e das lutas de Resistência buscar uma interpretação para muitos dos aspectos aparentemente desconcertantes de sua filmografia. Ao longo dos capítulos a pesquisa aborda, a partir de documentação esparsa em textos, declarações, debates, frases de filmes, os elementos biográficos \"enigmáticos\" de que se tem conhecimento, dada a discrição do cineasta sobre a sua pessoa. Em seguida o momento crucial da entrada de Marker, com 16 anos, no liceu em Paris e turbulências do ano de 1936, na França, discorre sobre o Front Populaire. Depois foca o nascimento de uma corrente, da qual Chris Marker participa, influenciada pela filosofia personalista de Emmanuel Mounier; e depois sua passagem pela revista Esprit e posteriormente a sua integração nas lutas da Resistência. Seguindo os passos do futuro cineasta, aborda o impacto da Resistência na vida militante e a formação dos cineclubes no meio operário com a Associação Peuple et Culture. Toda esta trajetória é permeada por comentários e análises de cenas dos futuros documentários. Por fim a pesquisa, aborda a problemática do cinema militante, analisando L\'ambassade (1973), filme de solidariedade com a Unidade Popular chilena e contra o golpe de Pinochet e o curta sobre o editor François Maspero. Os últimos percalços de nosso percurso busca construir um debate sobre A. Medvedkine e V. Maiakóvsky e a profanação da arte moderna, procurando investigar como na obra de Chris Marker coincidem cinema militante, cinema experimental, cinema ensaio e cinema documentário.
Chris Marker is an intriguing filmmaker who produced unconventional political documentaries over almost sixty years. After an active militancy, and inserted in the heart of crucial events in France and Europe, and working on a literary career as an editor, essayist and novelist, it is natural that his films, viewed in isolation, could cause the most equivocal interpretations. This research seeks, through a detailed analyses of his films and writings, to work with the debates that were important on the French national and global life of his time. Always thinking about the decisive events of the Front Populaire in the period (1936), the occupation of France by the German Nazis and the participation of Marker in the struggles of the Resistance. All of this puzzeled elements seek an interpretation for many of the seemingly confusing aspects of his filmography. Throughout the chapters of this research, we seek to approach, with this documentation, texts, statements, debates, films phrases, the enigmatic biographical elements of his uncanny formation. Marker is known by the discretion about himself. Working on his years of youth and formation, we see that when aged 16, in high school in Paris and the 1936 year in France, discussing at length the Front Populaire, we seek to work about Chris Marker influence by the personalist philosophy of Emmanuel Mounier and then by Esprit and later in it\'s integration in the struggles of resistance. Following in the footsteps of the filmmaker, this work discusses the impact of this years in his militant life, including the training of workers film clubs. All this history is permeated by scenes and debates of his future documentaries. Finally, the research addresses the issue of militant cinema, analyzing L\'ambassade (1973), the solidarity with the Chilean Popular Unity and the struggle against the totalitarian latin american dictatorships, and a short film-portrait of the editor Maspero. We end our research with a debate on A. Medvedkine and V. Mayakovsky and the profanation of modern art, trying to investigate how the work of Chris Marker coincide with militant cinema, experimental cinema, film essay and documentary cinema.

Der Pendelsensor “Crop-Meter” misst indirekt die oberirdische Biomasse von Getreide, um Stickstoffdünger (N) teilflächenspezifisch auf heterogenen Ackerflächen auszubringen. In On-Farm-Versuchen wurde eine variable N-Düngung mit „Crop-Meter“ gegenüber der praxisüblichen, einheitlichen N-Düngung in Wintergetreide getestet. Im Gegensatz zur klassischen Anlage von Parzellenversuchen war eine Bestandsheterogenität zum Sensoreinsatz im Getreide ausdrücklich gefordert. Prüfmerkmal war der Kornertrag. Auf Grund der georeferenzierten Ertragskartierung lagen die somit pseudo-wiederholten Daten vermutlich räumlich autokorreliert vor. Daher wurden zwei Ansätze zur statistischen Analyse gewählt. Im ersten Ansatz wurden die Ertragsdaten auf Basis der Biomasse post-stratifiziert, um die Biomassevariabilität einzugrenzen. In jedem Stratum wurden Autokorrelationsmodelle für die Residuen (räumliche Modelle) mit der Annahme nicht korrelierter Residuen (Nullmodell) verglichen. Stets wurden räumliche Modelle als beste statistische Modelle ausgewählt. Im Gegensatz zu den Nullmodellen waren die Ertragsdifferenzen räumlicher Modelle sehr häufig nicht signifikant. Dieses Ergebnis wurde auch durch verschiedene Stratifikationen und N-Einsparungen nicht verändert. Im zweiten Ansatz wurde jeweils der gesamte Ertragsdatensatz eines Versuchs zusätzlich zu den räumlichen Modellen mit Kovariablen (Trendmodelle) modelliert. Für jeden Versuch wurden individuell verschiedene Kombinationen aus Trend- und räumlichen Modellen selektiert. Die meisten Mittelwertdifferenzen waren trotz N-Reduktion in den variablen Varianten nicht signifikant (7…24 kg N ha-1). Diese Ansätze bilden eine Grundlage zur Ableitung fundierter Auswertungsmethoden von On-Farm-Versuchen mit georeferenzierten Daten.
A pendulum sensor (Crop-Meter) measures cereal aboveground biomass in order to apply nitrogen (N) fertilizers site-specifically on heterogeneous agricultural fields. In on-farm trials, common N application practice (constant) was compared to site-specific (variable) N application with the sensor to assess grain yields as response. Unlike the classic design of small-plot trials, cereal crop heterogeneity was explicitly desired to use the Crop-Meter. Simultaneously, spatial yield data provided pseudo-replications and possible autocorrelation. Therefore, two approaches were selected for statistical analysis. In the first approach, yield data were post-stratified on the basis of biomass measures to confine total biomass variability. For each stratum, spatial co-variance structures were assumed for residuals (spatial models) opposed to the assumption of non-correlated residuals (null model). Spatial models were selected as best statistical models. Very often, yield differences were not significant when selecting spatial models in contrast to null models. However, this was not due to different stratifications and stratum-dependent N savings. In the second approach, trend models were fitted for total yield datasets with covariates in addition to spatial models. For each on-farm trial, distinct combinations of trend and spatial models were selected. Most mean differences were not significant despite site-specific N reduction (7…24 kg N ha-1). These approaches provide basics to derive profound methods for analysis of on-farm trials with spatial data.

Diese Dissertation untersucht verschiedene soziale sowie landschaftsästhetische Funktionen der Landwirtschaft in strukturell gegensätzlichen Agrarsystemen. In der Untersuchung wird hierfür stets ein von kleinen Familienbetrieben dominiertes System mit einem stärker großstrukturierten, gewerblichen System verglichen. Die Arbeitszufriedenheit der Landwirte sowie ihre soziale Vernetzung mit der lokalen Gemeinde wurden im Vergleich zwischen dem kleinbäuerlichen Schweizer und dem großbetrieblichen nordostdeutschen System analysiert. Mittels Choice Experimenten wurden in der Schweiz und in Süddeutschland (d.h. kleinbäuerliche Systeme) sowie in Ostdeutschland (d.h. großstruktiertes, gewerbliches System) zudem Bevölkerungspräferenzen für Agrarlandschaften und damit die ästhetische Funktion der Landwirtschaft untersucht. Unter Berücksichtigung der Betriebsstruktur (z.B. Betriebsgröße) sind Schweizer Bauern zufriedener mit ihrer Arbeit als nordostdeutsche. Das Betriebseinkommen ist für nordostdeutsche Bauern signifikant wichtiger für die Arbeitszufriedenheit als für die Schweizer Kollegen. Besonders für Schweizer Bauern spielt die Betriebsdiversifizierung eine positive Rolle für die Zufriedenheit, z.B. die Vielfalt der Produktionszweige oder nicht-landwirtschaftliche Betriebszweige wie Agrotourismus. Auch haben Schweizer Bauern und solche kleinerer Betriebe mehr Bezug zu ihrer lokalen Gemeinde durch lokal fokussierte soziale Netzwerke. Betriebsleiter größerer Betriebe sind hauptsächlich außerhalb der Gemeinden vernetzt und fühlen sich diesen weniger zugehörig. Zudem stärkt ein biographischer Bezug zum Hof die Verbindung mit der Gemeinde. Die Mehrheit der befragten Schweizer und Ostdeutschen ist zudem für qualitative Veränderungen der Agrarlandschaften (d.h. mehr Weiden zur Freilandhaltung, Streuobstwiesen und höhere Biodiversität). Waldrückgange sowie Schlaggrößenveränderungen landwirtschaftlicher oder forstlicher Flächen werden nahezu einheitlich abgelehnt.
This dissertation investigates different social functions of agriculture as well as landscape aesthetics in farming systems of different agricultural structures. Throughout the whole project farming systems dominated by small family farms and large-scale farming systems dominated by commercial non-family farms (e.g. cooperatives) were compared. Farmers’ work satisfaction and their connection to the local community were examined in the small-scaled Swiss system and in the larger scaled Northeast (NE) German one. Public landscape preferences were derived using choice experiments in Switzerland and South Germany, representing small-scale systems, as well as in East Germany, representing a large-scaled one, to explore agriculture‘s aesthetic function. Swiss farmers are more satisfied with their agricultural work if for effects of farm structure (e.g. farm size) is controlled for. Farm income plays a significantly more important role for the work satisfaction of NE German farmers than for that of Swiss ones. Especially for Swiss farmers, farm diversification plays an important role, for example through a diversity of production lines or through non-agricultural activities like agrotourism. Further results show that Swiss farmers and farmers of smaller farms are more connected to their local communities through more locally focused social networks. Farmers of larger farms have their networks farther away from the farm and a weaker sense of belonging to their local community. A biographical bond to the farm also strenghtens the connection to the local community. Concerning public landscape preferences the majority of the Swiss and East German respondents generally prefers qualitative changes to landscapes (i.e. meadows for free range animal husbandry, meadow orchards and more biodiversity). Forest loss or changes in plot sizes of agricultural land and forests are nearly uniformly rejected in all regions.

Phenotypic plasticity plays an important role in organisms’ adaptability to environmental change such as global warming caused by greenhouse-gas emissions. One plastic response to increased temperatures is for organisms to shift their phenology. It is of great concern that the phenologies of interacting species, such as plants and pollinators, may be shifting at different rates, causing temporal mismatches, which for plants can lead to unsuccessful reproduction. The “reproductive assurance hypothesis” states that plants capable of self-pollination should be under high selection to employ this as their main reproductive strategy in the event of pollinator scarcity to ensure reproduction, and consequently invest less in attracting pollinators. This study examines how soil warming in the Hengill geothermal area in Iceland affects the flowering phenology, reproductive strategy and investment in attractiveness to pollinators in the self-compatible herb Cerastium fontanum (Caryophyllaceae), when grown in a common garden in Stockholm, Sweden. Previous research showed that C. fontanum from warmed soils flowered earlier in situ than plants from colder soils, and later when grown in a common environment. In this study, C. fontanum plants collected along a temperature gradient followed the same counter-gradient pattern, where plants from warmer soils flowered later than plants from colder soils. Soil temperature at site of origin positively affected flower number but had no effect on flower size, seed production from autogamous self-pollination or visitation rate. Based on my findings it does not appear that C. fontanum, despite having an earlier flowering phenology in situ, is under any selection to alter its reproductive strategy or investment in attractiveness to pollinators when grown in a common temperature, and therefore it seems unlikely that plants are experiencing a temporal mismatch with insect pollinators. However, it would be worthwhile to conduct a similar experiment in Iceland to better understand how an earlier flowering affects pollination systems.

EXPRMNTL fut probablement la plus importante manifestation jamais consacrée au cinéma expérimental. Conçu et organisé par Jacques Ledoux et la Cinémathèque royale de Belgique, le festival de Knokke / Bruxelles, qui ne connut que cinq éditions (1949, 1958, 1963, 1967, 1974) jouit aujourd'hui d'un statut mythique. Cette initiative singulière et inclassable fut bien davantage qu'un simple festival de cinéma : un point de rencontre pour la création d'avant-garde et la pensée contemporaine, un événement placé sous le signe de l'imprévu, du désir et de la contestation, y compris celle du festival même. En somme : une manifestation à ce point cohérente avec son objet qu'elle fut en elle-même une expérience. Cette recherche retrace l'histoire des cinq éditions du festival, de sa naissance à sa disparition. Elle se fonde sur les archives de la manifestation, jusqu'ici inexplorées, sur les comptes-rendus parus dans la presse de l'époque et sur de nombreux entretiens avec des acteurs et témoins
EXPRMNTL was probably the most important event ever devoted to experimental cinema. Designed and organized by Jacques Ledoux and the Royal Belgian Film Archives, the festival of Knokke / Brussels, which only had five editions (1949, 1958, 1963, 1967, 1974) now enjoys a mythical status. This unique and unclassifiable initiative was more than just a film festival: a meeting point for avant-garde culture and contemporary thinking, an event placed under the sign of the unexpected, desire and protest, including that of the festival itself. In short: an event so consistent with its object that it was in itself an experience. This research traces the history of the five editions of the festival. It is based on the hitherto unexplored archives of the event, the reports published in the press at the time and many interviews with protagonists and witnesses

Das Kerninteresse der Dissertation gilt den Einsatzmöglichkeiten ökonomischer Experimente in der Institutionenanalyse. Sie setzt sich aus einem konzeptionellen und vier empirischen Aufsätzen zusammen. Im ersten Aufsatz werden drei theoretische Blickwinkel auf institutionellen Wandel unterschieden. Diese werden dann mit empirischen Arbeiten in der experimentellen Wirtschaftsforschung in Beziehung gesetzt. Die empirischen Aufsätze greifen diese Überlegungen auf. Im zweiten Aufsatz findet für die Analyse der Verkehrsmittelwahl von Pendlern unter verschiedenen Politikszenarien ein „Framed Field Experiment“ Anwendung. Es wird gezeigt, wie Verlustaversion und Statusängste die Entscheidungen der Pendler erklären können. Im dritten Aufsatz kommt ein „Public Goods Game“ zum Einsatz, um den Einfluss von ökonomischer Ungleichheit und Vorbildverhalten auf Beiträge zu einer gemeinsam genutzten sanitären Einrichtung zu untersuchen. In einer strukturell ähnlichen Entscheidungssituation verhalten sich Teilnehmerinnen häufig so wie es ihnen aus anderen Zusammenhängen bekannt ist. Der vierte Aufsatz untersucht den Einfluss des sogenannten Status-Quo-Effekts auf umweltfreundliches Verhalten. In einem Feldexperiment wird gezeigt, dass sich ein Zwang zur Entscheidung positiv auf umweltfreundliches Verhalten auswirken kann. Der fünfte Aufsatz geht der Frage nach, ob sich Experimente als didaktisches Werkzeug zur Schaffung größeren Umweltbewusstseins einsetzen lassen. Im Vergleich zu einer Kontrollgruppe zeigen selbst Teilnehmende mit negativen Erfahrungen aus dem Experiment einen positiven Effekt auf umweltfreundliches Verhalten. In einem Fazit findet eine Synthese der Aufsätze statt. Ein Ergebnis ist die Entwicklung eines analytischen Rahmens für die Durchführung ökonomischer Experimente zur Untersuchung institutionellen Wandels. Konstitutionelle Regeln, also Regeln zur Änderung von Regeln, werden als erfolgversprechender Ansatzpunkt für die zukünftige Forschung identifiziert.
The dissertation focuses on the use of economic experiments for institutional analysis. It consists of one conceptual and four empirical essays. In the first essay, three theoretical perspectives on institutional change are distinguished. These are linked to empirical work in Experimental Economics. The empirical essays expand on these considerations. In the second essay, commuters’ transportation mode choice is analyzed. It is shown that loss aversion and status concerns drive behavior. In the third essay, a public goods game is employed to investigate the effect of endowment heterogeneity and leading by example on voluntary contributions to a jointly used sanitation facility. It is demonstrated that in a structurally similar decision context, choices are driven by experiences from other contexts. The fourth essay examines the impact of the so-called status quo bias on pro-environmental behavior. In a field experiment, it is shown that forcing a decision has a positive effect on pro-environmental behavior. The fifth essay investigates whether experiments can be used as a tool for environmental awareness building. Even participants with negative experiences from taking part in the dilemma experiment show a greater likeliness of behaving environmentally friendly in comparison to a control group. In a concluding part, the essays are synthesized. One outcome is an analytical framework for developing economic experiments on institutional change. Constitutional rules (i.e., rules on how to change the rules) are identified as a promising starting point for future research.

Friction Bit Joining (FBJ) is a recently developed spot joining technology capable of joining dissimilar metals. A consumable bit cuts through the upper layer of metal to be joined, then friction welds to the lower layer. The bit then snaps off, leaving a flange. This research focuses on FBJ using DP980 or DP590 steel as the lower layer, AZ31 magnesium alloy as the top layer, and 4140 or 4130 steel as the bit material. In order to determine optimal settings for the magnesium/steel joints, experimentation was performed using a purpose-built computer controlled welding machine, varying factors such as rotational speeds, plunge speed, cutting and welding depths, and dwell times. It was determined that, when using 1.6 mm thick coupons, maximum joint strengths would be obtained at a 2.03 mm cutting depth, 3.30 mm welding depth, and 2500 RPM welding speed. At these levels, the weld is stronger than the magnesium alloy, resulting in failure in the AZ31 rather than in the FBJ joint in lap shear testing.

La tesi doctoral La construcció discursiva de la competència ecociutadana a l'escola primària: la realització d'un disseny tecnològic col·laboratiu a l'hort escolar agroecològic té la finalitat d'explorar el desenvolupament de la competència ecociutadana a l'hort escolar, i en concret en activitats de disseny tecnològic col·laboratiu. Amb aquest propòsit es va dissenyar, de forma col·laborativa amb una mestra, una intervenció didàctica en una escola primària en què l'alumnat va dissenyar i muntar el sistema de reg de l'hort de l'escola a través d'una seqüència de deu activitats. Per tal d'analitzar la construcció discursiva de la competència ecociutadana en dues de les activitats de la intervenció didàctica, s'han definit cinc preguntes de recerca que es focalitzen en diferents components d'aquesta competència. La primera pregunta fa referència al procés de disseny del sistema de reg, és a dir al disseny de l'acció tecnològica. S'ha fet un anàlisi de la construcció i l'evolució de les propostes de disseny, els conflictes i els acords entorn al sistema de reg. Els resultats mostren que l'alumnat tendeix a integrar elements de diferents propostes de disseny, i que no es discuteixen en base a propostes oposades i excloents entre elles. La segona pregunta pretén caracteritzar el discurs argumentatiu que es construeix en un procés de disseny tecnològic col·laboratiu a l'hort escolar. Ens interessa conèixer d'una banda l'estructura del discurs argumentatiu, i d'altra banda la dinàmica de l'argumentació en la interacció. Els resultats mostren que hi ha diferències entre l'estructura i la dinàmica argumentativa en activitats d'argumentació científica i les activitats d'argumentació en disseny tecnològic per les diferències en els objectius i les demandes. La tercera pregunta que ens plantegem és sobre el model d'hort que es construeix discursivament en un procés de disseny tecnològic col·laboratiu a l’hort escolar, prenent com a referència el marc de l'agroecologia escolar. Els resultats indiquen que els conflictes de disseny que es donen entre les diferents propostes tecnològiques, i la necessitat de contextualitzar i concretar el disseny del sistema de reg, fan que s'evolucioni cap a un model d'hort més dinàmic i complex. El desenvolupament de la competència ecociutadana a l'hort, està lligada a la construcció d'un model d'hort però també a un model de participació. Per això, a la quarta pregunta ens plantegem com es construeix i com evoluciona el model de participació en un procés de disseny tecnològic col·laboratiu a l’hort escolar. Els resultats mostren que el disseny col·laboratiu d'un sistema de reg també ha estat una oportunitat per construir un model de participació mes democràtic. Finalment, en interessa conèixer quin és el paper de la mestra en aquest procés, i per això en la cinquena pregunta de recerca analitzem quines són les funcions de la mestra en el procés disseny col·laboratiu del sistema de reg per a l’hort escolar. Els resultats d'aquest eix d'anàlisi apunten que el paper de la mestra és fonamental ja que orienta la construcció discursiva dels dos models, tot contribuint a desenvolupar una mirada de l'hort més complexa i una manera de participar més democràtica. A partir d’aquest resultats, es conclou que actuar a l'hort com un dels àmbits preferents del sistema alimentari escolar suposa la construcció d'accions que sovint encaixen perfectament en l'àmbit de la tecnologia. Adoptar una orientació crítica de l'acció a l'escola ens ha portat a introduir el disseny tecnològic col·laboratiu com un bon context per aprendre a comprendre de manera més complexa i a participar de manera més democràtica. Aquest treball ha aportat evidències per afirmar que la tecnologia pot constituir un bon context per a desenvolupar la competència ecociutadana de l’alumnat d’educació primària per intervenir en el seu entorn, i fer-ho amb una dimensió col·laborativa i amb valors democràtics.
The doctoral thesis The discursive construction of eco-citizenship competence in primary education through collaborative technological design in a school agroecological garden aims to explore the development of the eco-citizenship competence in the school food garden, and the collaborative technological design activities in particular. For this purpose, and in a collaborative way with a teacher, a didactical intervention in a primary school was designed. The students had to design and build the watering system in the school food garden through ten activities. In order to analyze the discursive construction of the eco-citizenship competence in two of the didactical intervention activities, five research questions have been defined focused on different components of this competence. The first question is related to the watering system design process, this means, to the technological action design. The construction and evolution of the design proposals, conflicts and agreements on the watering system have been analyzed. The results show that students tend to integrate elements from different design proposals that are not contrary or mutually exclusive. The second question seeks to characterize the argumentative discourse constructed in a collaborative technological design process in the school food garden. We want to learn about the structure of the argumentative design on the one hand, and the dynamics of the argumentation during the intervention, on the other. The results show that there are differences between the argumentative structure and dynamics in scientific argumentative activities and the argumentative activities in technological design due to the differences in goals and requests. The third question is based on the garden model that is discursively constructed in a collaborative technological design process in the school garden as part of the school agroecology. The results indicate that design conflicts that appear between the different technological proposals and the need of providing a context for the watering system design promotes the evolution of a more dynamic and complex food garden. The development of the eco-citizenship competence in the school garden is not only related to the construction of a garden model but also to a participation model. That is the reason why in the fourth question we consider the way the participation model in a collaborative technological design process in a school garden is constructed and the way it develops. The results reveal that a collaborative watering system design has been a great opportunity to build a more democratic participation model. Finally, we are interested in the roll the teacher plays in this process. Thus, in the fifth research question we analyze the teacher’s roll in the collaborative design process of the watering system in the school garden. The results of this analysis show the teacher’s roll is essential because it orientates the discursive construction of the two models and it helps developing a more complex food garden approach and a more democratic way of participation. From these results we conclude that acting in a school garden as a preferential field of the school food system means the construction of actions that often fit perfectly in the technological field. The critical orientation of actions at school leads to the introduction of the collaborative technological design as a good framework to learn how to understand things in a more complex way and participate in a more democratic way. This paper provides evidences that proof that technology can build a good context to develop the students eco-citizenship competence in primary school in order to intervene in their environment and to do so in a collaborative dimension and with democratic values.

Vor dem Hintergrund gesättigter und informationsüberlasteter Märkte wird die Bedeutung der regionalen Herkunft von Lebensmitteln für das Konsumentenverhalten diskutiert. Obwohl diesem Produktattribut in wissenschaftlichen Befragungen eine marketingrelevante Bedeutung bescheinigt wird, spiegelt sich die geäußerte Präferenz und Mehrpreisbereitschaft aus Sicht des Einzelhandels häufig nicht im Kaufverhalten wider. Dies deutet auf eine Diskrepanz zwischen der Einstellung und dem Verhalten hin. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist es, die Einstellung gegenüber regionalen Lebensmitteln auf ihre Verhaltensrelevanz zu überprüfen. Die Einstellungs- und Imagetheorien, ihre Einbettung in die Country-of-Origin-Forschung sowie preistheoretische Ansätze bilden die theoretische Grundlage der Untersuchung. Sekundäranalytische Betrachtungen zeigen, dass die Einstellungs-Verhaltens-Beziehung besonders von persönlichen und situativen Faktoren beeinflusst wird. Die empirische Forschung basiert auf einer komplementären Verwendung von standardisierten Konsumentenbefragungen und Verkaufsexperimenten. Im Fokus der Befragungsdurchführung stehen dabei die Lebensmittelimages des Landes Brandenburg und der Region Spreewald bei Berliner Konsumenten. Für deren Ermittlung wird auf die einstellungsorientierte Imageoperationalisierung sowie auf qualitative Fragestellungen zurückgegriffen. Die Messung der Kaufabsicht erfolgt mit Hilfe simulierter Kaufentscheidungssituationen. Die Erforschung des Kaufverhaltens in Abhängigkeit von Produktherkunft und Preis wird durch die experimentelle Erfassung an insgesamt drei Standorten in Berlin realisiert. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen offenbaren deutlich positive Lebensmittelimages für das Land Brandenburg und besonders für die Region Spreewald. Dies kommt auch in einer grundsätzlich positiven Kaufabsicht zum Ausdruck. Die vergleichende Betrachtung von Kaufabsicht und Kaufverhalten zeigt, dass eine grundsätzliche Diskrepanz zwischen Einstellung und Verhalten nicht bestätigt werden kann. Vielmehr ist ein preispolitischer Spielraum zu erkennen, der für die Bearbeitung marketingrelevanter Segmente genutzt werden kann. Darüber hinaus spricht die weitgehende Übereinstimmung von Kaufabsicht und Kaufverhalten für eine hohe Aussagekraft qualifizierter Befragungen.
Against the background of saturated markets overloaded with information the relevance of food´s regional origin for consumer behavior is discussed. Results of scientific surveys show an increasing relevance of this attribute for marketing. According to retail management, however, the buying patterns do in many cases not confirm the expressed preference and willingness to pay more for regional products. This indicates a discrepancy between attitude and behavior. The aim of this study is to examine the attitude-behavior relationship in case of regional food products. Attitude and image theories and the way they are embedded in country of origin research, as well as approaches of price research form the theoretical basis of investigation. Secondary analytical research shows, that the relationship of attitude and behavior especially depends on personal and situational factors. The empirical research is based on complementary use of standardized consumer surveys and experiments at point of sale. The surveys focus on the food image of the federal state of Brandenburg and the region of Spreewald among Berlin´s consumers. These constructs are determined using attitude-oriented image operationalization and qualitative questions. Buying intentions are established by means of simulated situations where consumers are asked to decide what to buy. Research of consumer behavior depending on a product´s origin and price is carried out in experiments at point of sale at three places in Berlin. The results reveal positive food images for Brandenburg and in particular for Spreewald. This implies a basically positive buying intention for the products with these origins. The comparing examination of buying intention and real buying decision reveals that basically a discrepancy of attitude and behaviour does not exist. In contrast, there is a scope for price policy, which can be used to develop relevant market segments. Moreover, the great extent of consistency between buying intention and buying decision indicates a strong explanatory power of professional surveys.
