Desde mediados del siglo XIX, la pintura de paisaje gozó de reconocimiento en España. Determinados teóricos de la generación del 98 estructuraron el discurso sobre los espacios naturales del país con base en una concepción ensalzadora de Castilla. No obstante, en determinadas regiones del Estado surgieron apreciaciones de enclaves nada similares al centro peninsular. Como ejemplo, este artículo analiza el nacimiento y la consagración del paisajismo en Alicante a través de la literatura de Gabriel Miró y la pintura de Emilio Varela. Se consideran cuestiones como las relaciones entre las novelas del escritor y los óleos del artista plástico, la recepción de estas manifestaciones en Alicante a través de la crítica de arte y la proliferación de exposiciones de paisaje en la capital de la provincia tras la irrupción de estos dos creadores.

ABSTRACT: Gabriel Bocángel’s silva «El retrato» (c. 1638) is a textual Trojan horse in the war for poetic patronage in the early modern Spanish court. Written on the wedding of the poet’s cousin to Juan de Cetina, secretary to the Admiral of Castile, the poem is a verbal portrait of the bride that undermines not only the tradition of the descriptio puellae, but also the Count-Duke of Olivares’s power. As a panegyric of the latter’s enemy, the text employs the botanical images of the laurel and the ivy, exploiting the full sense of their symbolic meaning. As an appeal for the patronage of poetry and letters at court and an exercise in «self-fashioning» (Greenblatt), the text makes the lovers’ and the poet’s pursuits parallel to the «siege» of Daphne; the poet, as a new Apollo, sings and weaves a complex poetic fabric in which different tensions are ultimately resolved in the image of the Admiral’s laurelcrowned brow, to which both the couple’s and the poet’s ambitions aspire. RESUMEN: La silva «El retrato» (c. 1638) de Gabriel Bocángel es un caballo de Troya en la guerra por el patronazgo poético en el contexto de la corte española del siglo XVII. Escrita con motivo de la boda de la prima del poeta con Juan de Cetina, secretario del Almirante de Castilla, el poema es un retrato verbal de la novia que socava no sólo la tradición de la descriptio puellae, sino el poder del Conde-Duque de Olivares, enemigo acérrimo del Almirante. Como panegírico de este último, el texto emplea las imágenes botánicas del laurel y la hiedra explotando el pleno sentido de su significado emblemático y simbólico. Como petición de patronazgo de la poesía y las letras en la corte y como ejercicio de «self-fashioning» (Greenblatt), el texto pone en paralelo los objetivos de los amantes y del poeta con el acoso a Dafne; como nuevo Apolo, el poeta canta tejiendo un complejo tapiz en el que distintas tensiones se resuelven finalmente en la imagen de la frente del Almirante, coronada de laureles, a la que aspiran por igual las ambiciones de los amantes y del propio poeta.

A partir de 1606 Castilla sufrió la invasión de vellón falsificado, producido en Holanda y Alemania e introducido desde el suroeste francés por judeoconversos portugueses. La cifra pasada superó, entre 1606-1620, los 39.000.000 de ducados representando, por un lado, un grave quebranto para la política económica seguida por las autoridades y, por otro, un lucrativo negocio en el que participaron amplias capas de la sociedad castellana, incluyendo a significados elementos de la estructura del poder quienes, al ver amenazada su posición, no dudaron en utilizar todos los resortes de aquel, incluyendo al Tribunal de la Inquisición, contra los denunciantes que, por otro lado, eran espías al servicio del Rey de España. Los medios utilizados contra los testigos inculpatorios incluyeron el asesinato de Jorge Coton, espía inglés al servicio de España y la persecución inquisitorial del morisco Gabriel de Carmona, otro espía de la Corona. Los asesinos fueron los conversos portugueses afincados en Madrid y el mayor inculpado fue Juan Núñez Saravia, el famoso asentista cuando aún no había alcanzado tan relevante papel.

Quantification of suspended particulate matter (SPM) measurements—together with statistical tools, polar contour maps and backward air mass trajectory analyses—were implemented to better understand the main local and remote sources of contamination in this pristine region. Field campaigns were carried out during the austral summer of 2016–2017 at the “Gabriel de Castilla” Spanish Antarctic Research Station, located on Deception Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctic). Aerosols were deposited in an air filter through a low-volume sampler and chemically analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Elements such as Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, P, S, Cu, Pb, Sr, Ti, Zn, Hf, Zr, V, As, Ti, Mn, Sn and Cr were identified. The statistical tools together with their correlations (Sr/Na, Al/Ti, Al/Mn, Al/Sr, Al/Pb, K/P) suggest a potentially significant role of terrestrial inputs for Al, Ti, Mn, Sr and Pb; marine environments for Sr and Na; and biological inputs for K and P. Polar contour graphical maps allowed reproducing wind maps, revealing the biological local distribution of K and P (penguin colony). Additionally, backward trajectory analysis confirmed previous affirmations and atmospheric air masses following the Antarctic circumpolar pattern.

Durante el siglo XVIII, la dinastía borbónica en España impulsó una serie de reformas educativas que permitieron un florecimiento intelectual en sus territorios americanos, las reformas fortalecieron al gobierno, pero también despertaron las críticas. Mientras algunos documentos redactados en esta época describieron críticamente el escenario colonial con el fin de impulsar una serie de reformas, otros cumplieron la función de afianzar el fidelismo en los territorios ultramarinos. Las autoridades del siglo XVIII eran conscientes del poder del discurso como herramienta para su consolidación y estabilidad en el poder. El texto escrito por Pedro José de Zuzunaga y Castillo en Arequipa durante el levantamiento de José Gabriel Condorcanqui (Túpac Amaru II) evidencia los cambios vividos en las elites intelectuales americanas en este periodo.

We give an overview of the seventh volume of series IVA of the Birkhäuser edition of Leonhard Euler’s complete works and correspondence. This volume contains Euler’s correspondence in French with ten of his Swiss countrymen: Louis Bertrand, Charles Bonnet, Marc-Michel Bousquet, Jean de Castillon, Gabriel Cramer, Philibert Cramer, Gaspard Cuentz, Albrecht von Haller, Georges-Louis Lesage and Johan Caspar Wettstein. A letter of the German Johann Michael von Loën to Euler, mentioned in the Euler-Bertrand letter exchange is also included as well as the recently rediscovered first letter of Euler to Jean le Rond d’Alembert in supplement. The letters cover a large range of topics also outside Euler’s mathematical and physical interests giving a new insight into his non-scientific activities, and thus casting also a new light on this great scientist as a person.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are a global environmental concern, having long been identified as harmful substances due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation in humans and wildlife. The commercial mixtures Penta-BDE and Octa-BDE have been banned in the European Union because of their toxic effects. Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are brominated aliphatic cyclic hydrocarbons used in building materials, upholstery textiles, and electronics. The aim of this thesis was to assess concentrations of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including specifically polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): IUPAC congener numbers BDE-28, -47, -66, -85, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, hexabromocyclododecane (α-, β-, γ- HBCD), novel brominated flames retardants such as BTBPE, PBBZ, HBB, PBEB, PBT, TBECH (α, β) and Dechlorane Plus isomers (anti and syn) in dust samples from different indoor environments at Spanish Antarctic research station of Gabriel de Castilla, the Chilean Antarctic research station of Prof. Julio Escudero and the British RRS James Clark Ross research vessel. The mean concentrations of ∑9PBDEs were 41.5 ± 43.8 ng/g in Gabriel de Castilla, 27.2 ± 37.9 ng/g in RSS James Clark Ross and 18.7 ± 14.2 ng/g in Prof. Julio Escudero. The Gabriel de Castilla research station reported a total ∑9PBDEs concentration of 301 ng/g. BDE-183 was detected with the highest concentrations of 69, 24 and 18 ng/g in Lab 2, Bedroom 1 and the Living room, respectively. The Prof. Julio Escudero research station reported a total ∑9PBDEs concentration of 83 ng/g and its highest levels of PBDEs were detected in the Meeting room with 18 ng/g (BDE-99) and 14 ng/g (BDE-47).. RSS James Clark Ross reported a total ∑9 PBDEs concentration of 165 ng/g, while the highest concentration of BDE-153 was detected in the Sample storage room with 59 ng/g, followed by the Computer room with 15 ng/g. The mean concentration of ∑HBCD was highest in RRS James Clark Ross (761 ± 1043 ng/g) followed by Gabriel de Castilla (257 ± 407 ng/g) and Prof. Julio Escudero (15 ± 15 ng/g). The total ∑HBCD concentration was highest in RSS James Clark Ross with 5328 ng/g, followed by Gabriel de Castilla with 2310 ng/g and Prof. Julio Escudero with a lower concentration of 30 ng/g. The mean concentrations of ∑9NBFRs were 24.7 ± 34.1 ng/g in Gabriel de Castilla, followed by RSS James Clark Ross with 21.1 ± 110 ng/g and Prof. Julio Escudero with 1.07 ± 2.17 ng/g. In general, ∑9NBFRs were 2227 (ng/g) in Gabriel de Castilla followed by 1329 ng/g in RRS James Clark Ross and finally 86.5 ng/g in Prof. Julio Escudero. The highest level (905 ng/g) was detected in the Sample storage room at RRS James Clark Ross. Dechlorane Plus, syn-DP compound was detected in all rooms in the Spanish Gabriel de Castilla base; the highest concentrations were found in the Living room (388 ng/g), Bedroom 1 (222 g/g) and Lab 2 (194 ng/g). The isomer anti-DP was also detected in Igloo 2 (170 ng/g) and in the Living room (154 ng/g). In general, the analysis of air mass in order to determine possible sources and fates of these contaminants demonstrated that the sampling area are strongly influenced by anthropogenic impact. This suggests that the concentration of these chemicals in any indoor environment will depend on the types of products present in each research station. Although the estimated exposure is well below the corresponding reference doses (RfDs), caution is needed given the likely future increase in use of these FRs and the currently unknown contribution to human exposure by other pathways such as inhalation and diet.

In the past years, a new wave of progressive governments emerged in the Latin America region. Andrés Manuel López Obrador (Mexico, 2018), Alberto Fernández (Argentina, 2019), Pedro Castillo (Perú, 2021), and Gabriel Boric (Chile, 2022) present themselves as 'democratic' candidates in opposition to authoritarian and right-wing governments. In the eyes of many, this turn still represents hope, a way to confront oppressions and inequalities, strengthen democracy, promote development, and achieve social justice. Their contradictions or 'betrayals' are seen as errors, individual mishaps, or even as external intrusions; they are never understood as the result of a violent and oppressive process of 'othering' within the logic of accumulation rooted in the capitalist state. Mexico and Argentina exemplify this particular form of how capitalism operates in Latin America today. These countries illustrate how the production and reproduction of capital combine violence and extractivism, authoritarianism, and developmentalism via the state's use of 'progressive' rhetoric. Inspired by state derivation theorists, this chapter aims to answer the following questions: do progressive strategies differ from those of the far-right? Does this kind of government impact the form of the state differently? Or is it that both progressive and right-wing, are these two facets equally necessary to reproduce capitalist social relations?

Las victorias de Pedro Castillo en Perú y de Gabriel Boric en Chile han provocado que, desde algunos sectores, se considere como algo seguro la existencia de una segunda ola progresista en la región latinoamericana. Sin embargo, analizando un poco más de cerca ambos casos, esta afirmación se torna discutible. Los hechos electorales no parecen suficientes para determinar la orientación y las acciones posteriores de un gobierno. Lenin Moreno, Ollanta Humala o Juan Manuel Santos son ejemplos de que es necesario esperar algo más que pocos meses para sostener afirmaciones ideológicas rotundas. Asimismo, la relación con la izquierda bolivariana, en particular con Venezuela, y la problemática de la migración venezolana, son elementos a tomar en cuenta en el análisis
