AbstractA group of subarboreal tropical beetles, the Xystosomi of subtribe Xystosomina new subtribe, is revised and reclassified based on a reevaluation of structural characters. Xystosomi are found in tropical Australia (Queensland) and tropical/subtropical America (Guerrero, México, to Aguas Blancas, Argentina). The largest concentration of species occurs near the equator in the Amazon Basin, but a significant radiation of flightless forms was recently discovered in the northern Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Xystosomina also includes the Mioptachyi, which at present is composed of the genera Mioptachys and Inpa.Seventy-six species of Neotropical and Australian Xystosomi are described or re-described, illustrated, or keyed. This assemblage includes 12 classic species, 24 species described in the last 3 decades, and 40 new species, a 6-fold increase since the time of Henry Walter Bates, the last 19th-century entomologist to study this remarkable lineage of carabid beetles. The Xystosomi are now arrayed in five genera: Philipis gen.nov. (type: Tachys trunci Darlington, Australia), Geballusa gen.nov. (type: Xystosomus microtretus Erwin, Costa Rica), Gouleta gen.nov. (type: Bembidion cayennense Dejean, Brazil), Batesiana gen.nov. México posee diversos acervos genéticos de tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) que fueron generados durante largos procesos de domesticación y diversificación, pero poco documentados en cuanto a calidad de frutos. Para evaluar la calidad física, química y nutricional de frutos de tomate silvestre (L. esculentum var. cerasiforme Dunal), se hizo una colecta de 17 muestras en ocho municipios del estado de Oaxaca, México. Las semillas de las muestras se sembraron, bajo un diseño de bloques al azar con tres repeticiones, en invernadero durante el ciclo primavera-verano 2009. En cada parcela experimental se tomó una muestra de frutos maduros (rojos), firmes y sanos, en la que se evaluaron los contenidos de licopeno, vitamina C, sólidos solubles, pH, azúcares reductores, acidez titulable, y las coordenadas cromáticas L*, a* y b*. Mediante un análisis de componentes principales se determinó que los contenidos de licopeno, sólidos solubles, pH, azúcares reductores, acidez titulable, y los parámetros de color, fueron las variables más importantes para describir la variabilidad evaluada. Un análisis de conglomerados reveló la presencia de tres grupos entre las colectas evaluadas. Se presentaron diferencias (P < 0.05) entre grupos y entre colectas en todas las variables. Las colectas L-063 y L-073, ambas de San Blas Atempa, sobresalieron en licopeno en base húmeda con 26.8 y 28.2 mg 100 g-1, y en base seca con 368.1 y 343.9 mg 100 g-1, respectivamente. En vitamina C sobresalieron las colectas L-074 de Santiago Nuyoó, L-076, L-077, L-078 y L-079 de San Blas Atempa, y L-080 de Nejapa de Madero, con más de 15 mg 100 g-1. El índice de color (a*/b*) correlacionó positivamente con todos los caracteres químicos y nutricionales, excepto con pH.

ABSTRACTFour experiments were conducted with lactating dairy cows offered a hay and concentrate diet (0·5:0·5) to investigate the effects of (1) the frequency of feeding a completely mixed diet (experiment 1) compared with feeding the concentrate fraction and the roughage fraction separately (experiment 2), and (2) the addition of sodium chloride to a completely mixed diet (experiment 3), on the fractional rate of outflow (FRO) of chromium (Cr)-treated fish meal from the rumen, and on milk yield and composition. The cows were offered the diet at either twice the maintenance requirement (experiments 1 and 2), or 2-5 x maintenance (experiment 3) in a 4 x 4 Latin-square design. The effect of the particle size of the Cr-treated soya bean meal was investigated in experiment 4.The frequency of feeding of the completely mixed diet had no significant effect on the rate of outflow of Cr-treated fish meal from the rumen, or on milk yield or composition. FRO per h were 0·070, 0·085, 0·079 and 0·086 when the diet was offered once, twice, four times or 12 times per day respectively. Increasing the frequency of feeding of the concentrate fraction of the diet had no significant effect on FRO. FRO per h were 0·073, 0·078, 0·081 and 0·081 when the concentrate fraction was offered once, twice, four times or 12 times per day respectively.The addition of NaCl to the diet significantly increased water intake (P < 0·001), but had no significant effects on FRO or milk yield. FRO per h were 0·074, 0·075, 0·076 and 0080 when 50, 265, 529 or 794 g of NaCl were added into the diet respectively. The respective intakes of water were 66·6, 74·1, 88·4 and 101·6 kg/day.The FRO per h of fine particles of Cr-treated soya bean meal was 0·085 and for coarse particles, 0·096. The difference was not significant.

The purpose of the research is to study the variability and relationships of agronomic traits of spring soft wheat in the conditions of the northern forest-steppe of Western Siberia and to identify promising sources for use in the breeding process. Studies were carried out in 2018-2021. The objects of the research were 60 samples of spring soft wheat of various origin (Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, China) from the collections of the N. I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources and Kemerovo Research Institute of Agriculture. Twenty-one samples of spring soft wheat with the growing period of 80-85 days have been identified. According to productivity the following samples have been selected: PM-83-17 (KP-072, Kemerovo, Russian Federation) - 236.0 g/m2, Lyutescents 5-17 (KP-073, Kemerovo, Russian Federation) - 240.0 g/m2, Omskaya 35 (k-64459, Omsk, Russian Federation) - 246 g/m2, Siberian Alliance (k-65242, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Russian Federation) - 252 g/m2, Lyutescents 105/4 (KP-071, Kemerovo, Russian Federation) - 294 g/m2, Ekada 70 (k-64547, Ulyanovsk, Russian Federation) - 310 g/m2 (OMGAU 90 standard - 173 g/m2). The Ekada 70 sample had he lowest yield variability, 19.8 %. The closest conjugation between the yield and the number of grains in the ear was revealed (r = 0.3702), the mass of 1000 grains (r = 0.3769) (confidence threshold R = 0.3323). The mass of grain per ear is largely determined by the mass of 1000 grains (r = 0.9879. The most valuable for breeding work are samples of Russian origin distinguished by a complex of traits: Siberian Alliance, Lyutescens 105/4, Ekada 70.

Results from observational studies on the association of fish and n-3 fatty acid consumption with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk are conflicting. Hence, a meta-analysis was performed to investigate this association from cohort studies. A comprehensive search was then conducted to identify cohort studies on the association of fish and/or n-3 fatty acid intake with T2DM risk. In the highest v. lowest categorical analyses, the fixed or random-effect model was selected based on the homogeneity test among studies. Linear and non-linear dose–response relationships were also assessed by univariate and bivariate random-effect meta-regression with restricted maximum likelihood estimation. In the highest v. lowest categorical analyses, the pooled relative risk (RR) of T2DM for intake of fish and n-3 fatty acid was 1·146 (95 % CI 0·975, 1·346) and 1·076 (95 % CI 0·955, 1·213), respectively. In the linear dose–response relationship, the pooled RR for an increment of one time (about 105 g)/week of fish intake (four times/month) and of 0·1 g/d of n-3 fatty acid intake was 1·042 (95 % CI 1·026, 1·058) and 1·057 (95 % CI 1·042, 1·073), respectively. The significant non-linear dose–response associations of fish and n-3 fatty acid intake with T2DM risk were not observed. The present evidence from observational studies suggests that the intake of both fish and n-3 fatty acids might be weakly positively associated with the T2DM risk. Further studies are needed to confirm these results.

Background Mycoplasma pneumonia (M. pneumoniae) is one of the key pathogens of community-acquired pneumonia. A global pandemic of M. pneumoniae has occurred since 2010. The aim of this study was to survey the prevalence of M. pneumoniae in children in Beijing from 2007–2012. Methods A total of 3 073 clinical specimens were obtained from pediatric patients with respiratory tract infections from January 2007 to December 2012, and examined by nested polymerase chain reaction. PCR products were visualized by 2% agarose gel electrophoresis, positive products sequenced, and compared with reference sequences in GenBank. Macrolide resistance-associated mutations were also detected for some positive samples. Results Of the 3 073 specimens, 588 (19.13%) were positive for M. pneumoniae, 12.4% of which were accompanied by viral infections. Positive rates for M. pneumoniae were highest in 2007 and 2012, showing a significant difference when compared with other years. Infections tended to occur in autumn and winter and positive rates were significantly higher for children aged 3–16. The rate of macrolide resistance-associated mutations was 90.7%, and the predominant mutation was an A→G transition (89.92%) at position 2063 in domain V of the 23S rRNA gene. Conclusions M. pneumoniae outbreaks occurred in 2007 and 2012 in pediatric patients in Beijing, which is consistent with the global prevalence of M. pneumoniae. M. pneumoniae can cause multi-system infections in children, and may be accompanied with viral infections. We determined that school-age children are more susceptible to this disease, particularly in autumn and winter. Gene mutations associated with macrolide resistance were very common in M. pneumoniae-positive specimens during this period in Beijing.

The exposure of two species of talitrid amphipods (Orchestia gammarellus and Orchestia mediterranea) to a range of zinc and copper concentrations in solution has enabled the categorization of the mode of metal accumulation adopted by these supralittoral amphipods. Both species showed net accumulation of dissolved zinc and copper at all experimental exposures between 20 and 1000 μig Zng 1 and 13 and 1000 μg Cu 1 in artificial sea-water. Studies using Zn have shown that the zinc uptake rates of both species (0·430 μg Zn g d, SE 0·032 and 0·408 µg Zn g d, SE 0·073 for O. gammarellus and O. mediterranea respectively at 10°C in 31·6 μg Zn 1) are not significantly different, and are low in comparison with other crustaceans. Laboratory results are related to field conditions, and it is concluded that Firth of Clyde O. gammarellus are more dependent upon a food source in order to meet both their copper and zinc requirements than are O. mediterranea which are able to obtain sufficient metabolic copper from solution. The use of talitrid amphipods in zinc and copper biomonitoring programmes is also discussed.

Abstract The new minerals redmondite (IMA2021–072), [Pb8O2Zn(OH)6](S2O3)4, hydroredmondite (IMA2021–073), [Pb8O2Zn(OH)6](S2O3)4·2H2O, and sulfatoredmondite (IMA2021–089), [Pb8O2Zn(OH)6](SO4)4·6H2O, were found in the Redmond mine, Haywood County, North Carolina, USA, where they occur together in a highly unusual secondary assemblage that comprises a variety of rare Pb-Zn-Cu sulfates, thiosulfates, and carbonates. The properties of redmondite are as follows: colorless to shades of brown, transparent equant rhombs to about 1 mm; white streak; adamantine luster; brittle; Mohs hardness 2; conchoidal fracture; no cleavage; 5.757 g/cm3 calculated density; biaxial with α = 1.96–1.97, β = 1.97–1.98, γ = 1.97–1.98; extreme dispersion. The properties of hydroredmondite are as follows: colorless, transparent prisms, blades, and tablets up to about 1 mm; white streak; adamantine luster; brittle; Mohs hardness 2; curved and stepped fracture; good cleavages on {101} and ; 5.124 g/cm3 calculated density; biaxial (+) with α = 1.830(5), β = 1.880(calc), γ = 1.950(calc), 2Vmeas = 83(1)°. The properties of sulfatoredmondite are as follows: colorless, transparent wedge-shaped crystals to about 2 mm; white streak; adamantine luster; brittle; Mohs hardness 2; curved, irregular fracture; no cleavage; 5.173 g/cm3 calculated density; biaxial (+), α = 1.780(5), β = 1.850(calc), γ = 1.860(calc), 2Vmeas = 40(3)°; moderate r &gt; v dispersion. Electron probe microanalyses provided the empirical formulae: Pb8.16Zn1.00S6+3.97S2−3.97O20H5.79, Pb8.00Zn1.00S6+4.00S2−4.00O22H9.98, and Pb8.00Zn0.99S6+4.00S2−0.89O29.11H17.98 for redmondite, hydroredmondite, and sulfatoredmondite, respectively. Redmondite is monoclinic, P21/c, a = 9.1672(4), b = 10.6576(4), c = 14.0620(10) Å, β = 101.173(7)°, V = 1347.83(12) Å3, and Z = 2. Hydroredmondite is monoclinic, P21/n, a = 12.5991(9), b = 9.2819(4), c = 12.9774(9) Å, β = 90.443(6)°, V = 1517.57(16) Å3, and Z = 2. Sulfatoredmondite is monoclinic, C2/m, a = 17.294(2), b = 7.3668(9), c = 12.7271(18) Å, β = 110.622(9)°, V = 1517.5(4) Å3, and Z = 2. The crystal structures of redmondite (R1 = 0.0346 for 2061 I &gt; 2σI), hydroredmondite (R1 = 0.0346 for 3022 I &gt; 2σI), and sulfatoredmondite (R1 = 0.0344 for 1661 I &gt; 2σI) are all based on the same [Pb8O2Zn(OH)6]8+ structural unit.

AbstractObjectiveIncreasing the consumption of Fe-rich foods and thus improving Fe bioavailability without significantly increasing diet cost is the most sustainable intervention for improving Fe intake. We assessed the effect of supplementary food consisting of fermented soyabean (tempeh) and vitamin C-rich fruit consumed during pregnancy on maternal iron deficiency (ID).DesignPregnant women were randomly allocated by village into optimized diet and control groups. Supplementary food was given 6 d/week at home. The average weekly food provided comprised 600 g of tempeh, 30 g of meat, 350 g of guava, 300 g of papaya and 100 g of orange. Hb, ferritin and transferrin receptor (TfR) concentrations were measured at 12–20 and at 32–36 weeks of gestation.SettingThirty-nine villages in Indonesia.SubjectsPregnant women (12–20 weeks of gestation, n 252).ResultsAt baseline, mean Hb, ferritin and TfR concentrations and body Fe concentration were within the normal range and did not differ between groups. At near term, mean Hb, ferritin and body Fe decreased, whereas mean TfR increased significantly in both groups. The mean changes in Fe status were similar in both groups. In Fe-deficient women, consumption of an optimized diet was associated with smaller decreases in Hb (1·02 (95 % CI 0·98, 1·07) g/l; P = 0·058), ferritin (1·42 (95 % CI 1·16, 1·75) μg/l; P = 0·046) and body Fe (2·57 (95 % CI 1·71, 3·43) mg/kg; P = 0·073) concentrations, compared with a state of no intervention. Fe-deficient women at baseline benefited more from supplementary food compared with Fe-replete women.ConclusionsDaily supplementary food containing tempeh and vitamin C-rich fruits during pregnancy might have positive effects on maternal ID.

AbstractTwo new lead oxychloride minerals, hereroite [Pb32(O, ☐)21](AsO4)2((Si,As,V,Mo)O4)2Cl10 and vladkrivovichevite [Pb32O18][Pb4Mn2O]Cl14(BO3)8·2H2O occur in association with asisite, damaraite, kombatite, sahlinite, copper, quartz, barysilite, Mn silicates and a number of Mn oxyhydroxide minerals on a specimen from the Kombat mine in Namibia. The minerals formed as late-stage products of hydrothermal reworking of primary sulfide minerals.Hereroite is monoclinic, C2/c with a = 23.14(1), b = 22.65(1), c = 12.39(1) Å, β = 102.00(5)°, V = 6351.6(41) Å3 from powder-diffraction data and a = 23.139(4), b = 22.684(4), c = 12.389(2) Å, β = 102.090(3)°, V = 6358.8(18) Å3 from single-crystal data. It is bright orange, with white streak and adamantine lustre. It is brittle with no observed parting or cleavage and has a conchoidal fracture. The calculated density is 8.15 g cm–3. The mean refractive index in air at 589 nm is 2.38. The six strongest reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in Å, (I), (hkl)] are as follows: 2.982(100)(51); 2.795(47)(80); 1.986(24)(8); 1.641(24)(11..); 3.512(23)(61); 3.901(21)(511). Hereroite is named for the Herero people, one of the indigenous tribal groupings in the region where the Kombat mine is located.Vladkrivovichevite is orthorhombic, Pmmn with a = 12.87(5), b = 27.7(4), c = 11.46(3) Å, V = 4080.1(5) Å3, from powder-diffraction data and a = 12.759(1), b = 27.169(4), c = 11.515(1) Å, V = 3992.0(9) Å3, Z = 2, from single-crystal data. It is pale greenish yellow, with white streak and adamantine lustre. It is brittle with no observed parting or cleavage and has a conchoidal fracture. The calculated density is 7.40 g cm–3. The mean refractive indices in air at 589 nm are 2.30 and 2.34. The six strongest reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in Å, (I), (hkl)] are as follows: 2.860(100)(370); 2.733(84)(073); 3.707(49)(073); 3.068(37)(401); 2.075(32)(473); 1.601(32)(3.14.3). Vladkrivovichevite is named in honour of Prof. Dr Vladimir Gerasimovich Krivovichev (b. 24.04.1946), Head of the Department of Mineralogy, Geological Faculty, St Petersburg State University.The crystal structures of hereroite and vladkrivovichevite consist of alternating litharge-like O – Pb double layers and chlorine sheets and both are structurally related to other layered lead oxychlorides. In hereroite, tetrahedral AsO4 and (Si, As, V, Mo)O4 groups locate in defects within the O – Pb block, which combines square 'symesite-type' and double-square 'kombatite-type' cavities in its crystal structure. The structure of vladkrivovichevite is based on O – Pb derivative blocks with the interlayer occupied by Cl– anions and oxocentred OPb4Mn2 octahedra whose eight triangular faces are capped by triangular borate anions, BO33–.

Abstract Macrobrachium americanum has a high commercial value with good fishing and cultivation possibilities in Mexico. Currently there is little information on reproductive aspects so the present work analyzed the sex ratio, fecundity and morphometry of the eggs of M. americanum in the Petatlán River, Sinaloa, Mexico. A total of 31 ovigerous females were captured. The sex ratio was 0.39 F: 1 M. The partial fecundity (Pf) varied from 34, 554 to 342, 372 eggs (128, 246 ± 12, 306 eggs, average Pf). The relationships between body and length-fecundity (R2= 0.5546), cephalothorax and length-fecundity (R2= 0.4995) were adjusted to a linear model, and the total weight-fecundity to a potential model (R2= 0.5013). The average relative fecundity was 37, 132 ± 5, 162 eggs/g. A total of 7 stages of embryonic development were observed. In the first stages, the egg presents a spherical form and in the latter an ovoid shape. Maximum egg diameter values are presented in stages VII, VI and VIII. Stage II provided the largest number of eggs (1, 013, 073 eggs). It is essential to optimize the exploitation of the population of M. americanum present in the Petatlán River through the creation of scientific bases for the sustainability of the fishery.

The analysis of the control region of human mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) especially hypervariable regions I (HVI) and II (HVII) segments have been proven to be useful for human identification. For forensic application of mtDNA profiling in Malaysia, a comprehensive database on both HVI and HVII regions are essential. In order to identify polymorphic positions and to determine their frequency in the Malay population, mtDNA HVI and HVII regions of 103 maternally unrelated individuals were amplified ,sequenced and compared with Cambridge reference sequence (CRS). Sequence comparison led to the identification of a total of 446 and 604 location polymorphisms in mtDNA HVI and HVII regions respectively. This polymorphisms defined by 88 haplotypes (81 unique) in the HVI and 78 haplotypes (64 unique) in the HVII regions. In combined HVI and HVII defined 101 haplotypes (99 unique) was defined. In the HVII region All the individuals in HVII showed nucleotide transition event from A G at nucleotide position 073 and 263 and an insertion of cytosine (315.1C) at nucleotide position 315. The genetic diversity and probability of random match in combined HVI and HVII of 103 Malay individuals was found to be 0.9996 and 0.0101 respectively.Scientific World, Vol. 12, No. 12, September 2014, page 24-29

AbstractHere, we introduce a new radiocarbon (14C) extraction line operating at the University of Bern, which was designed and built for the extraction of in situ 14C from meteorites. With this system, we achieved two important developments compared to other systems. First, using the MICADAS gas-interface system, 14C can directly be measured from the collected CO2 gas, i.e., without graphitization of the sample. Second, meteorite sample masses as low as ~0.05 g can be used for high precision and reproducibility. Prior to extraction in an oxygen atmosphere held at a pressure of ~20–30 mbar in an iridium crucible at 1600°C for 40 min, samples were preheated for 1 h in a constant oxygen flow at 500°C and continuous pumping. Gas purification followed the method described previously (e.g., Hippe et al. 2009). While the blank levels for preheated samples are low (<2×104 14C atoms), the blanks for non-preheated samples are high, therefore those results cannot be used. We also report preliminary results for the L-chondrite JaH 073. The terrestrial age of 17.7±0.4 ka is in good agreement with previous results for the same sample of this meteorite, confirming that the extraction line, the gas purification system, and the AMS measurements are all reliable.

The article is devoted to the results of the pedagogical experiment, checking the effectiveness of the Optional course "Formation of preparedness of future managers of general educational establishments to use innovative pedagogical technologies in professional activities". Quantitative and qualitative indicators of the data obtained during the study showed a positive impact of the proposed optional course on the formation of preparedness of future managers of general educational establishments to use innovative pedagogical technologies in professional activities. The article highlights the results of a study conducted among students of the second level of higher education, specialty 073 "Management", educational program "Management of the educational institution". The study used a questionnaire to determine the level of knowledge about innovative pedagogical technologies of future managers of general educational establishments (author’s development), a questionnaire to study the abilities of the individual to creative self-development (I. V. Nikishyn) and a questionnaire to determine the motivation of vocational training V. G. Katasheva. The generalized dynamics of levels of preparedness of future managers of general educational establishments to use innovative pedagogical technologies in professional activities before and after formative experiment in the form of diagrams is presented. In order to assess the statistical significance of the dynamics of changes in the levels of preparedness of future managers of general educational establishments to use innovative pedagogical technologies in professional activities and to assess the differences between the indicators of control and experimental groups as a results of experimental work, the methods of mathematical statistics was used – Pearson criterion χ2 ("chi-square test").

Transient surveys have recently revealed the existence of H-rich super-luminous supernovae (SLSN; e.g., iPTF14hls, OGLE-SN14-073) that are characterized by an exceptionally high time-integrated bolometric luminosity, a sustained blue optical color, and Doppler-broadened H I lines at all times. Here, I investigate the effect that a magnetar (with an initial rotational energy of 4 × 1050 erg and field strength of 7 × 1013 G) would have on the properties of a typical Type II supernova (SN) ejecta (mass of 13.35 M⊙, kinetic energy of 1.32 × 1051 erg, 0.077 M⊙ of 56Ni) produced by the terminal explosion of an H-rich blue supergiant star. I present a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium time-dependent radiative transfer simulation of the resulting photometric and spectroscopic evolution from 1 d until 600 d after explosion. With the magnetar power, the model luminosity and brightness are enhanced, the ejecta is hotter and more ionized everywhere, and the spectrum formation region is much more extended. This magnetar-powered SN ejecta reproduces most of the observed properties of SLSN iPTF14hls, including the sustained brightness of −18 mag in the R band, the blue optical color, and the broad H I lines for 600 d. The non-extreme magnetar properties, combined with the standard Type II SN ejecta properties, offer an interesting alternative to the pair-unstable super-massive star model recently proposed, which involves a highly energetic and super-massive ejecta. Hence, such Type II SLSNe may differ from standard Type II SNe exclusively through the influence of a magnetar.

It was found out that in the provisions of normative documents of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (order from 06.11.2015 no 1151), in tables of the list of specialities on which was carried out training of specialists in higher educational establishments Educational qualification levels of specialist and Master (List 2), and the list of fields of knowledge and specialties, which are trained for applicants of higher education, approved by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 29 April 2015 no 266 ( List 2015), for the specialty "management of educational institution (by type)" 8.18010020 subject area defined in such a way that it is clearly referred to the field of knowledge 07 "Management and Administration" of the specialty 073 "Management". Changing the subject area has led to changing legal grounds for educational activities, which in turn resulted in the actual curtailment of managers ' training for the educational sphere. Based on the recommendations of the International Standard Classification of Education: Education and Training in 2013 (MSKO-G 2013), in the study, within the framework of this article, an examination of the content of the educational Scientific Program "management of a higher education institution" and proved, that according to substantive content, it should be attributed to the field of Knowledge 01 education/pedagogy in speciality. Only under these conditions can the educational program meet the criteria (2.3.) Context: Addressing safe-play knowledge and player aggression could potentially improve ice hockey sport safety. Objectives: To compare (1) safe-play knowledge and aggression between male and female adolescent ice hockey players and (2) head-impact frequency and severity between players with high and low levels of safe-play knowledge and aggression during practices and games. Design: Cohort study. Setting: On field. Patients or Other Participants: Forty-one male (n = 29) and female (n = 12) adolescent ice hockey players. Intervention(s): Players completed the Safe Play Questionnaire (0 = less knowledge, 7 = most knowledge) and Competitive Aggressiveness and Anger Scale (12 = less aggressive, 60 = most aggressive) at midseason. Aggressive penalty minutes were recorded throughout the season. The Head Impact Telemetry System was used to capture head-impact frequency and severity (linear acceleration [g], rotational acceleration [rad/s2], Head Impact Technology severity profile) at practices and games. Main Outcome Measure(s): One-way analyses of variance were used to compare safe play knowledge and aggression between sexes. Players were categorized as having high or low safe-play knowledge and aggression using a median split. A 2 × 2 mixed-model analysis of variance was used to compare head-impact frequency, and random-intercept general linear models were used to compare head-impact severity between groups (high, low) and event types (practice, game). Results: Boys (5.8 of 7 total; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 5.3, 6.3) had a trend toward better safe-play knowledge compared with girls (4.9 of 7 total; 95% CI = 3.9, 5.9; F1,36 = 3.40, P = .073). Less aggressive male players sustained significantly lower head rotational accelerations during practices (1512.8 rad/s2, 95% CI = 1397.3, 1637.6 rad/s2) versus games (1754.8 rad/s2, 95% CI = 1623.9, 1896.2 rad/s2) and versus high-aggression players during practices (1773.5 rad/s2, 95% CI = 1607.9, 1956.3 rad/s2; F1,26 = 6.04, P = .021). Conclusions: Coaches and sports medicine professionals should ensure that athletes of all levels, ages, and sexes have full knowledge of safe play and should consider aggression interventions for reducing head-impact severity among aggressive players during practice.

Magnetar power is believed to be at the origin of numerous super-luminous supernovae (SNe) of Type Ic, arising from compact, hydrogen-deficient, Wolf-Rayet type stars. Here, we investigate the properties that magnetar power would have on standard-energy SNe associated with 15–20 M⊙ supergiant stars, either red (RSG; extended) or blue (BSG; more compact). We have used a combination of Eulerian gray radiation-hydrodynamics and non-LTE steady-state radiative transfer to study their dynamical, photometric, and spectroscopic properties. Adopting magnetar fields of 1, 3.5, 7 × 1014 G and rotational energies of 0.4, 1, and 3 × 1051 erg, we produce bolometric light curves with a broad maximum covering 50–150 d and a magnitude of 1043–1044 erg s−1. The spectra at maximum light are analogous to those of standard SNe II-P but bluer. Although the magnetar energy is channelled in equal proportion between SN kinetic energy and SN luminosity, the latter may be boosted by a factor of 10–100 compared to a standard SN II. This influence breaks the observed relation between brightness and ejecta expansion rate of standard Type II SNe. Magnetar energy injection also delays recombination and may even cause re-ionization, with a reversal in photospheric temperature and velocity. Depositing the magnetar energy in a narrow mass shell at the ejecta base leads to the formation of a dense shell at a few 1000 km s−1, which causes a light-curve bump at the end of the photospheric phase. Depositing this energy over a broad range of mass in the inner ejecta, to mimic the effect of multi-dimensional fluid instabilities, prevents the formation of a dense shell and produces an earlier-rising and smoother light curve. The magnetar influence on the SN radiation is generally not visible prior to 20–30 d, during which one may discern a BSG from a RSG progenitor. We propose a magnetar model for the super-luminous Type II SN OGLE-SN14-073.

AbstractThirty-two piglets weaned at 28 days of age were used to test the hypothesis that maintenance of nutrition after weaning would prevent the normal decline in villous height and increase in crypt depth and hence preserve the structure and function of the small intestine. Piglets were allocated to one of four treatments at weaning: (1) control group killed at weaning; (2) piglets offered a dry starter diet ad libitum; (3) piglets offered ewes' fresh milk; and (4) piglets offered ewes' fresh milk plus 20 g t-glutamine per I. Piglets in treatments (3) and (4) were offered ewes' fresh milk every 2 h in a feeding schedule that increased from 1·2 I per piglet on the 1st day after weaning to 2·4 I on days 4 and 5. On the 5th day all piglets were killed and samples of small intestine were taken for histological and biochemical examination. Feeding ewes' milk or ewes' milk plus 20 g L-glutamine per I maintained (P > 0·05) villous height and crypt depth compared with piglets killed at weaning. In contrast, piglets given a dry starter diet had shorter villi (P < 0·001), deeper crypts (P < 0·001), and proportionately 0·21 to 0·28 less protein (P > 0·05) in their intestinal mucosa. Piglets given the starter diet proportionately grew from 0·49 to 0·62 more slowly (P < 0·01), ate the same amount of dry matter (DM; P > 0·05), but consumed proportionately 0·30 less energy (P < 0·001) than their counterparts given the milk diets. No treatment differences in the specific activity of lactase and sucrase were observed (P > 0·05). Significant correlations existed between voluntary food intake and villous height at the proximal jejunum for piglets given the starter diet and ewes' milk (P < 0·05 and P = 0·073, respectively). In turn, villous height was significantly correlated (r = 0·78 to 0·87, P < 0·05) with the rate of body-weight gain after weaning in these two groups. For piglets offered ewes' milk plus glutamine, an increase in DM intake was associated only with increases in crypt depth (P < 0·01). These data show that the structure and function of the small intestine can be preserved when a milk diet is given after weaning, and suggest an association between food intake and villous height in determining post-weaning weight gain.

В исследовании и получении новых фаз с ценными физико-химическими свойствами важное место отводится тройным соединениям с тетраэдрическим анионом, содержащим различные комбинации одно- и поливалентных катионов, в частности, тройным молибдатам и вольфраматам. Интерес представляют серебросодержащие тройные молибдаты AgA3R(MoO4)5, принадлежащие к структурному типу NaMg3In(MoO4)5 (триклинная сингония, пр. гр. P1, Z = 2) и обладающие достаточно высокой ионной проводимостью (10–3–10–2 См/cм). В связи с этим, целью даннойработы явилось установление возможности образования подобных соединений в молибдатных и вольфраматных системах серебра, цинка, индия и железа и выявление влияния природы тетраэдрического аниона и трехзарядных катионов на их получение и свойства.Синтез поликристаллических образцов осуществляли по керамической технологии. Методами исследования являлись дифференциально-термический и рентгенофазовый анализы.В результате выполнения работы получены новые тройные молибдаты AgZn3R(MoO4)5 (R = In, Fe), кристаллизующиеся в триклинной сингонии (пр. гр. P1, Z = 2). Определены последовательность химических превращений, протекающих при образовании этих соединений, их кристаллографические и термические характеристики. Параметры элементарной ячейки для индиевого соединения: a = 6.9920(4), b = 7.0491(4), c = 17.9196(9) Å, a = 87.692(5), b = 87.381(5),g = 79.173(5)°; для железного: a = 6.9229(3), b = 6.9828(4), c = 17.7574(8) Å, a = 87.943(4), b = 87.346(5), g = 78.882(5)°.Установлено, что серебросодержащие тройные вольфраматы цинка с индием и железом, обладающие подобной структурой, не образуются. The Strength Use and Deficit Correction (SUDCO) Questionnaire has been shown to be a reliable instrument for the measurement of its four dimensions perceived organizational support for strengths use, perceived organizational support for deficit correction, strengths use behavior, and deficit correction behavior in the context of organizations. This paper aims to adapt and validate the SUDCO for the German-speaking population (SUDCO-G). Three studies were conducted. Confirmatory factor analyses and correlations with other psychological constructs on the data of three German samples (N1 = 302; N2 = 243, N3 = 295) were performed. The twenty-four item SUDCO-G exhibits the anticipated factorial structure with four factors and an acceptable model fit in all three studies (CFI = .920-.937, TLI = .911-.929, RMSEA = .063-.079, SRMR = 0.52-.075). The associations of the four dimensions to other constructs concur with previous findings (study 2) and the subscales of the SUDCO-G also show positive relations with general strengths use, meaning of work and Psychological Capital (study 3). We conclude that the SUDCO-G is a reliable and valid instrument for the use in the German-speaking population.

Distillers grains are coproduced with ethanol and carbon dioxide during the production of fuel ethanol from the dry milling and fermentation of corn grain, yet there is little basic microbiological information on these materials. We undertook a replicated field study of the microbiology of distillers wet grains (DWG) over a 9 day period following their production at an industrial fuel ethanol plant. Freshly produced DWG had a pH of about 4.4, a moisture content of about 53.5% (wet mass basis), and 4 × 105 total yeast cells/g dry mass, of which about 0.1% were viable. Total bacterial cells were initially below detection limits (ca. 106 cells/g dry mass) and then were estimated to be ∼5 × 107 cells/g dry mass during the first 4 days following production. Culturable aerobic heterotrophic organisms (fungi plus bacteria) ranged between 104 and 105 CFU/g dry mass during the initial 4 day period, and lactic acid bacteria increased from 36 to 103 CFU/g dry mass over this same period. At 9 days, total viable bacteria and yeasts and (or) molds topped 108 CFU/g dry mass and lactic acid bacteria approached 106 CFU/g dry mass. Community phospholipid fatty acid analysis indicated a stable microbial community over the first 4 days of storage. Thirteen morphologically distinct isolates were recovered, of which 10 were yeasts and molds from 6 different genera, 2 were strains of the lactic-acid-producing Pediococcus pentosaceus and only one was an aerobic heterotrophic bacteria, Micrococcus luteus . The microbiology of DWG is fundamental to the assessment of spoilage, deleterious effects (e.g., toxins), or beneficial effects (e.g., probiotics) in its use as feed or in alternative applications.

SummaryThere has been little study on the growth and morphology of individual plants constituting the population of white clover in mixed swards under grazing. Such information is required if the mechanisms governing plant productivity and persistence are to be understood.Intact white clover plants were sampled from intensively sheep-grazed pastures under set stocking, rotational grazing, and a combination of both systems, by taking turves (250 × 250 mm), and washing out the plants, every month for a year. Characters measured for every stolon of each plant were: presence of a growing point; numbers of leaves, roots and axillary buds; stolon length. Total plant leaf and stolon dry weight were also recorded. Plants were classified according to degree of branching, and the contribution of each branching order to the population determined.There were strong seasonal variations in plant size (leaf and stolon dry weight, stolon length, and numbers of stolons and leaves per plant) which showed a significant decrease in spring with recovery over the following summer. This was paralleled by a rapid increase in the proportion of less branched plants (1st and 2nd branching order) in the population from 60 to 80% in spring, as higher-order plants broke up into smaller- and lower-ordered plants at this time. Numbers of roots per plant increased over winter to peak in early spring then declined in the following summer-autumn. While system of grazing management had no significant effect on branching structure of plants, it had a large effect on plant dry weight; rotationally grazed plants were 2·5 times larger than set stocked plants (0·182 cf. 0·073 g respectively).Other general features of plant morphology were that each successive order of branch stolons was shorter and length before branching was less than that of their preceding parent stolon. The highest branching order observed was 6th order. There was no relationship between branching and numbers of roots; in branched plants only 55% of stolons were rooted regardless of plant order, but rooted stolons accounted for 85% of total stolon length and carried 62, 48 and 90% of the leaves, growing points and axillary buds per plant, respectively.Comparison with other studies suggests that the processes outlined in this report may be common to white clover growth under grazing over a wide range of favourable environments.

The effects of five diets, with 12–18% crude protein (CP) and 6.6–10.8 g lysine per MJ digestible energy (DE), on live performance, carcass and meat quality criteria were recorded for 90 pigs in a split-plot design involving male castrates and gilts and three replicates, with three pigs per pen. The five diets, differing in the ratio of barley:soybean meal, were fed as pellets, ad libitum from 25 to 98 kg liveweight. A balanced incomplete block design was used with four additional pens to assess the palatability of the diets offered in pairs sequentially over 10 wk. As expected, castrates had a higher intake (2817 vs. 2580 g d−1) and daily gain (888 vs. 800 g d−1) than gilts and were relatively fatter except when fed the lowest CP diet. While an increase in dietary CP, or lysine:energy ratio, led to significant improvements in growth rate, gain:feed and lean content, there was a concomitant reduction in marbling and sensory appeal. The palatability study suggested that both castrates and gilts tended to favour the intermediate diets (8.8 and 10.1 g lysine per MJ DE) over the others, with a preference for higher CP diets in the early growth period. Estimates of the lysine:DE ratio for maximum live performance indicated that gilts should receive > 10.8 in the pre- − 50 kg period and approximately 10.1 g lysine per MJ DE thereafter. For castrates, the respective ratios were 10.8 and 8.8 g per MJ DE. Split-sex feeding, with gilts receiving about 2% higher dietary protein levels than castrates, was also favoured by the estimates of economic benefits for the producer. Three strains of tannin-tolerant rumen bacteria were isolated from enrichment cultures of rumen microflora of sheep, goat, and antelope and established in medium containing high concentrations of crude tannin extract or tannic acid. These three strains (EAT2, ES3, and EG19), characterized as Selenomonas species, were curved rods, obligately anaerobic, Gram negative, highly motile, and grew in media containing 50 g of tannin extract/L and 50-70 g of tannic acid/L. Strain EAT2 was able to hydrolyze gallic acid, while strains ES3 and EG19 hydrolyzed tannic acid but not gallic acid. All isolates were able to grow in media containing up to 8 g of condensed tannins/L. Grain characteristics prior to physiological maturity are important for silage harvest and for grain harvest when grain fill has been prematurely terminated by factors such as hail or early frost. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in grain moisture, C and N concentrations associated with the progression of milk line from silking to physiological maturity for hybrids with maturity ratings between 76 and 95 Minnesota relative maturity days. A field experiment with a total of 15 hybrids was carried out on a well-drained sandy loam soil at Ottawa, Canada, from 1995 to 1997, inclusive. A large number of uniform plants with the same phenology were marked in each plot near tasseling, and ears were sampled from these plants at weekly intervals from R1 to final harvest. It was noted that 50% milk line was associated with a range of kernel moisture concentrations: in 1995, a relatively warm year, kernel moisture was 389 g kg–1 when 50% milk line occurred; in 1996, a relatively cool year, kernel moisture was over 420 g kg–1 at 50% milk line. During the course of grain fill, C concentrations remained relatively constant whereas N concentrations were dramatically reduced from as high as 50 g kg–1 to approximately 15 g kg–1. Maximum dry matter accumulation was reached at 325 g kg–1 moisture. In general, later-maturing hybrids appeared to have longer duration from silking to 50% milk line; however, they took less time to reach physiological maturity (faster grain fill and dry down). Although benchmarks of 50% milk line and 0% milk line are commonly used for silage and grain production, there is a range of grain moisture-milk line relationships among genotypes and under different environmental conditions during grain fill. The effects of moisture level and a neutralized propionate preservative on yield, quality and preservation of rain-free and weathered alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hay were studied in separate trials. Moisture levels of 252, 185 and 138 g kg−1 in rain-free hay and 297, 211 and 180 g kg−1 in weathered hay were designated as High, Medium and Low, respectively. The weathered hay received 66 mm of rain at about 600 g kg−1 moisture and another 15 mm prior to baling at the Low moisture level. The preservative (680 g kg−1 propionic acid equivalent) was applied at 1.25 and 1.50% (wt wt−1) for rain-free and weathered hay, respectively. The High and Medium moisture level treatments had similar harvested dry matter (DM) yields in both rain-free and weathered hay. Rain-free hay DM yield at harvest was 6–9% higher for the High and Medium treatments than the Low moisture level, while for the weathered hay the Medium level was 3.0% higher (P < 0.05) than the Low moisture level. Poststorage forage qualities of the Low and Medium moisture level treatments were similar and higher than the High moisture treatment (P < 0.05) in rain-free hays, while the Medium level treatment was highest (P < 0.05) for forage quality in weathered hay. The Medium moisture level compared with Low moisture level resulted in 10.4, 10.6 and 15.8% higher yields of DM, in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) and crude protein, respectively, in rain-free hay and 3.1, 6.3 and 5.7% higher, respectively, in weathered hay. The propionate was inconsistent in preventing DM loss during storage, but reduced temperature and mould count in both hay types. Application of 1.25 and 1.50% (wt wt−1) of propionate improved poststorage IVDOM by 2.0 and 3.6%; increased crude protein yield by 3.0 and 5.7% and IVDOM yield by 3.3 and 5.7%; reduced neutral detergent fiber by 5.4 and 7.6%; reduced acid detergent fiber by 5.4 and 7.1%; and reduced acid detergent insoluble nitrogen by 9 and 18% in rain-free and weathered hay, respectively. It is recommended that large round bales be harvested at moisture levels somewhat above 170 g kg−1 for both rain-free and weathered hay with or without a neutralized propionic acid preservative. Abstract Background: The beneficial effect of adding rituximab to CHOP has been shown for elderly patients with DLBCL (Coiffier et al, N.E.J.M 2002). We have shown that HDT with autologous stem cell transplantation is superior to CHOP in young adults with DLCL ( Milpied et al GOELAMS 072 trial, N.E.J.M 2004). The feasibility of adding rituximab to front-line HDT remains to be established. Methods: A prospective pilot trial was proposed to patients with DLBCL, with intermediate-high or high adjusted IPI, up to the age of 60 y.o. This program consisted of 2 courses of high-dose CHOP-like regimen, 15 days apart, with rituximab (375/mg/m2) on day 1 of each course, followed by rituximab on d 22, harvest of G-CSF mobilised peripheral blood stem cells on d 28,29, then rituximab on d 36 followed by a course of high-dose methotrexate with cytarabin. For patients who achieved at least a PR after these 3 courses, a BEAM regimen started on d 66 to 80 followed by the infusion of stem cells. Results: Between 04/2002 and 05/2003, 42 pts gave their informed consent and were included in that trial. Median age was 50 y.o (18–60 y.o), 23 had WHO PS ≥ 2, the LDH level was >N in 41 pts and 38 had stage III or IV disease. The age-adjusted IPI was intermediate-high in 23 and high in 19 pts. The program was completed in 30 pts (71%), 3 pts died of toxicity before the BEAM regimen, 8 pts failed to achieve at least a PR after the first 3 courses and 1 refused the autologous transplant. On an intent-to-treat basis, the response rate at the end of the treatment was CR/Cru=64%, PR=7%, less than PR or progression= 22% and toxic death=7%. No toxic death was directly attributable to the addition of rituximab. With a median FU of 19 m, the KM 2y probability of OS and EFS are 79% and 59% respectively, these figures compare to those achieved without rituximab in the previous trial as shown on the table: Conclusion : The addition of 4 doses of rituximab to this HDT program is feasible with no unexpected toxicity, allows the harvesting of sufficient numbers of stem cells to support an autologous transplant with a BEAM regimen in responding patients. Rotationally resolved (1 + 1′), resonance-enhanced, two-photon ionization spectra of the C 0+u ← X 0+g transition of several isotopomers of Xe2 have been recorded. Rotational constants have been determined for the v′ = 14–26 levels of the C 0+u Rydberg state and the v′′ = 0 and 1 levels of the X 0+g ground state, and band origins have been determined with an absolute accuracy of 0.015 cm–1 for the transitions to the v′ = 14–26 levels of the C 0+u state of the 129Xe2, 129Xe–132Xe, and 131Xe–136Xe isotopomers. The equilibrium internuclear separation of the X 0+g ground state (Re = 4.3773(49) Å) was determined from the rotational constants of the v′′ = 0 and 1 levels. The analysis of the isotopic shifts of the band origins enabled the confirmation of the absolute numbering of the vibrational levels of the C 0+u state determined by Lipson et al. (R.H. Lipson, P.E. Larocque, and B.P. Stoicheff. J. Chem. Phys. 82, 4470 (1985)). A semiempirical interaction potential for the X 0+g ground state was derived in a nonlinear fitting procedure using the present spectroscopic results, the positions of the v′′ = 2–9 levels determined by Freeman et al. (D.E. Freeman, K. Yoshino, and Y. Tanaka. J. Chem. Phys. 61, 4880 (1974)) and experimental values for the second virial coefficient. The interaction potential is similar to previous semiempirical potentials but the dissociation energy (De = (196.1 ± 1.1) cm–1) differs from the value of 183.1 cm–1 determined in the latest ab initio calculation (P. Slavíček, R. Kalus, P. Paška, I. Odvárková, P. Hobza, and A. Malijevský. J. Chem. Phys. 119, 2102 (2003)). The magnitude of breed and sex biases in the prediction of meat yield using a single fat measurement was investigated under commercial conditions. Warm carcasses (n = 174) originating from four purebreeds (Yorkshire, 24 boars, 17 gilts; Landrace, 22 boars, 27 gilts; Hampshire, 24 boars, 15 gilts; Duroc, 21 boars, 24 gilts) weighing close to 80 kg were assessed for fat thickness at the maximum loin with a ruler (current Canadian carcass grading measurement) and at the last rib 70 mm from the midline with a Hennessey Grading Probe. All carcasses were evaluated for retail and lean yield 24 h post-slaughter. At the same carcass weight (78.7 kg), significant differences in both retail and lean yield were found (Hampshire > Landrace; boars > gilts), which largely reflected breed and sex differences in fattening. At the same loin fat thickness (25 mm) breed bias in retail yield amounted to 23 g/kg carcass, while sex bias amounted to only 2 g/kg carcass. At the same last rib, fat thickness breed bias in retail yield was reduced to 12 g/kg carcass, while sex bias increased to 4 g/kg carcass. The effect of changing sites of fat measurement from the loin to the last rib in this study resulted in a substantial reduction in breed bias (1.81 kg to 0.98 kg of retail yield), but to increased sex bias (0.15 kg to 0.28 kg of retail yield). Similar trends were found when lean yield was used as the base instead of retail yield. Prediction equations for retail and lean yield were found to be more precise using last rib fat thickness than those using the maximum loin fat measurement. It was concluded that breed bias would be reduced if last rib fat thickness was used to predict the meat content of pork carcasses. The fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis can infect wheat kernels, causing red smudge, and has been shown to produce the anthraquinone mycotoxins emodin, catenarin, and islandicin. The growth of 8 fungal isolates from diverse regions was evaluated on various culture media and was found to be generally slowest on the semisynthetic Fries medium. The choice of carbon source had a significant effect on mycotoxin production, as assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The highest emodin concentration (194.18 ± 16.26 µg/g medium) was observed for isolate Alg 3-24 on Fries medium supplemented with fructose, while the highest catenarin concentration (302.54 ±13.92 µg/g medium) was observed for TS93-71B on Fries medium supplemented with starch. Islandicin was not produced by any isolate under the conditions tested. Evaluation of the dynamics of mycotoxin production by isolate 331-2 on V8-potato dextrose agar medium revealed a rapid accumulation of emodin and catenarin during the first week of incubation, followed by a large decline by 14 days. Differences in the growth of and mycotoxin production by isolates of P. tritici-repentis likely resulted from the differential composition of the media and (or) intraspecies variability. Accordingly, the optimization of growth medium should be considered when evaluating the potential of specific isolates for mycotoxin production.

Corn and other crops genetically modified to express the insecticidal δ-endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are grown widely across north America. Studies have shown that the δ -endotoxin can be stabilised on soil colloids where its activity is retained, but reports of direct ecological effects of the δ-endotoxin on soil processes are limited. We have determined the concentrations of the δ-endotoxin in organic residues fro m Bt-corn plants at increasing stages of ageing and decay, and the subsequent decomposition in soil of these residues and the δ-endotoxin in them. The δ-endotoxin concentrations declined from 6.8 μg g-1 in the fresh plant material, to 0.82 μg g-1 in the post-harvest residues collected in the fall, and to 0.026 μg g-1 in the residues collected from soil surface the following spring. The concentration of δ -endotoxin in buried residues collected in the spring was not significantly different from zero. When incubated in soil in the laboratory over 84 d, the δ-endotoxin decomposed more rapidly than bulk plant C by factors of 1.85 for the fresh plant materials and 3.21 for the post-harvest residues. Within 14 d of incubation, the δ-endotoxin concentration in the residues collected at the soil surface was below the limit of detection. We contrasted the laboratory decomposition data with data from a field experiment to estimate the period that the δ-endotoxin in corn residues may survive in the field. Based on estimates derived from this comparison, we predict that following an October harvest in eastern Ontario the δ-endotoxin would fall below the detection threshold during November for post-harvest residues. Since stabilisation of the δ-endotoxin on soil colloids depends on it surviving (i.e., not being decomposed) for long enough to be released from the plant residue matrix and come into proximity with colloid surfaces, the rapid decay of the δ-endotoxin suggests that only a small fraction of the δ-endotoxin from post-harvest residues persists long enough to become stabilised in the field. Работа посвящена обобщению результатов исследования анодирования алюминида титана (γ-TiAl) во фторсодержащих электролитах. Установлены оптимальные условия анодирования, приводящие к формированию самоорганизованных нанопористых анодных оксидных пленок (АОП) на поверхности образцов, сплава Ti-40 wt. % Al. Показано, что при оптимальных условиях образуются рентгеноаморфные оксидные пленки гетерогенного состава (Al2O3:TiO2 @ 1:1) с размерами пор в диапазоне от 40 до 80 nm. Полученные результаты свидетельствуют о перспективности применения анодного наноструктурирования порошков Ti-40 wt. % Al для получения фотокаталитически активных материалов с расширенным до видимого света спектральным диапазоном поглощения. In every non-cyclic Sylow subgroup P of G we fix some subgroup D satisfying 1 < |D| < |P| and study the structure of G under the assumption that every subgroup H of P with |H| = |D| is either s-semipermutable or s-quasinormally embedded in G. This paper contains three results about these constants. Firstly, if G contains a compact open subgroup then cp,q(G) = 1 and, as an extension of an earlier result of J. J. F. Fournier, it is shown that there is a constant cp,q&lt; 1 such that if G does not contain a compact open subgroup then c&lt;(G) ≤ c≤. Secondly, Beckner's calculation ofis used to obtain the value of cp,q(G) for all simply-connected solvable Lie groups and all nilpotent Lie groups. Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplements have been shown to reduce milk fat synthesis in dairy cows. A rumen-inert source of CLA is required for commercial feed applications. The conversion of dietary lipids to a calcium salt is considered as a method to counter the extensive hydrogenation of dietary lipids that occurs in the rumen. Our objective was to determine whether feeding calcium salts of CLA under commercial conditions would affect milk production, milk composition and blood metabolic profile. A total of 240 dairy cows from eight farms were blocked according to the calving date, and randomly assigned to four treatments providing CLA at 0, 8, 16 and 32 g d-1. Milk production was recorded and milk was sampled on day 0, 7, 14, 28 and 42 of the feeding period. Blood samples were taken on day 42 from early-lactating cows (< 157 d in milk) to determine the metabolic profile. Milk fat yield was decreased 11, 20 and 28%, and milk fat concentration was reduced 13, 22 and 28% (linear; P < 0.001) when cows received 8, 16 and 32 g d-1 of CLA, respectively. Milk yield, milk protein and blood metabolic parameters were not affected by experimental treatments. Calcium salts of CLA can be used as an effective tool to manage milk fat content on commercial dairy farms. Key words: Conjugated linoleic acid, milk fat, ruminally inert fat

We consider the orbits of maximal dimension for the action of N′ × N′ on G′ and the weighted orbital integral of f′ on such an orbit, the weight being a generic character. The resulting integral, we call a Kloosterman integral. A relative version of this construction is to consider a symmetric space S associated to a quasi-split group G, a maximal unipotent subgroup N of G, a maximal compact K of G and the orbits of maximal dimension for the action of N on S. The weighted orbital integral of the characteristic function f of K ∩ S on such an orbit is what we call a relative Kloosterman integral; the weight is an appropriate character of N. We conjecture that a relative Kloosterman integral is actually a Kloosterman integral for an appropriate group G′. We prove the conjecture in a simple case: E is an unramified quadratic extension of F,G is GL(3, E), S is the set of 3 × 3 matrices s such that the group G′ is then the quasi-split unitary group in three variables.

The ground (X1A′) and two lowest lying excited singlet states (11A″ and 21A′) of methyl hypochlorite have been examined using ab initio electronic structure techniques to validate computationally efficient methods, upon which direct dynamics can be based, versus high-level ones, for which direct dynamics would be intractable. Ground-state equilibrium geometries and vibrational frequencies determined using density functional theory (DFT) with the 6-31G(d) basis set are tested against coupled-cluster theory (CCSD(T)) results from the literature. Vertical excitation energies and transition dipole moments calculated at the complete active space self-consistent field CASSCF/6-31+G(d) level of theory are benchmarked against multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) results with the aug-cc-pVXZ (X = D, T, Q) family of basis sets. The excited-state gradients that will govern the classical dynamics are compared for CASSCF/6-31+G(d) versus MRCI/aug-cc-pVXZ (X = D, T). To carry out the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), existing electronic structure codes have been interfaced with the molecular modelling toolkit (MMTK), an open-source program library for molecular simulation applications. We use two examples to demonstrate the use of direct dynamics in MMTK: a canonical ground-state trajectory to sample positions and momenta, and an excited-state microcanonical trajectory based on CASSCF. The work presented here forms the basis for future study of the photodissociation of CH3OCl. As well, the implementation of AIMD within MMTK provides a useful tool for examining a variety of other research problems.

AbstractA pilot-scale industrial microwave unit operating at 2450 MHz was used to test whether microwave treatment can control Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) populations infesting stored rye, Secale cereale L. (Poaceae). Tests were performed in samples of rye (50 g) with 14%, 16%, or 18% moisture content. Samples containing T. castaneum eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults were exposed to 200, 300, 400, or 500 W for periods of 28 or 56 s, resulting in final surface temperatures ranging from 47.2 to 83.9 °C. Eggs were most vulnerable; adults were least vulnerable. Subsequent tests showed that microwaves reduced rye germination and flour yield. No effect of treatment on grain protein content, falling number, sodium dodecyl sulfate sedimentation volume, mixograph and farinograph dough development times, or baking properties was detected.

Under a conventional (CON) lighting program, birds were photostimulated from 5L:19D to 14L:10D at 29 wk, with an additional hour of daylight added at 35 wk of age (15L:9D). The alternate (ALT) lighting program involved weekly 0.5 h decreases in day length from 14L:10D at 3 d to 6L:18D, at 17 wk followed by weekly 0.5-h increases in day length beginning at 20 wk, to a maximum of 15L:9D at 38 wk of age. Birds were killed either at 3-d intervals (140–206 d), to assess reproductive development, or on the day following the first oviposition. A final group of birds was maintained for egg-production records. The ALT birds reached first egg at a younger age (220 d vs. 224 d) and lower body weight (11.18 kg vs. 11.88 kg) than CON birds did. The oviduct of the CON treatment reached its mature weight 5 d before the ovary. The growing oviduct of the ALT birds reached its mature weight 4 d after the ovary. Ovarian development of the ALT birds was accelerated by 10 d, compared with that of the CON birds. The number of unreconciled ovulations, as evidenced by postovulatory follicles at first oviposition, did not differ between treatments (1.2, ALT; 1.6, CON). The number of large follicles was not different between the two treatments (12.9, ALT; 14.3, CON [P = 0.092]). First-egg weights were significantly lower (70.6 g, ALT; 77.2 g, CON) for the ALT treatment, which also had a higher incidence of small eggs for the first 4 wk of production (3.31%, ALT; 0.82%, CON). Strain M-07T was isolated from nitrifying–denitrifying activated sludge treating piggery wastewater. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that strain M-07T belonged to the genus Advenella . 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between M-07T and Advenella incenata CCUG 45225T, Advenella mimigardefordensis DPN7T and Advenella kashmirensis WT001T was 96.5, 97.3 and 96.9 %, respectively. The DNA G+C content of strain M-07T was 49.5 mol%, which was approximately 5 mol% lower than the range for the genus Advenella (53.5–58.0 mol%). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain M-07T were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C17 : 0 cyclo and summed feature 2 (comprising one or more of C14 : 0 3-OH, iso-C16 : 1 I, an unidentified fatty acid with an equivalent chain-length of 10.928 and C12 : 0 alde). The isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness, strain M-07T should be classified as a novel species of the genus Advenella , for which the name Advenella faeciporci sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M-07T ( = JCM 17746T = KCTC 23732T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain T7-07T, was isolated from compost in Daejeon, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that strain T7-07T had 99.0 % gene sequence similarity with Arenimonas malthae KACC 14618T and 94.7–95.9 % with other recognized species of the genus Arenimonas . Cells formed creamy white to yellowish colonies on R2A agar and contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone, C15 : 0 iso, C16 : 0 iso, C17 : 1 iso ω9c and C11 : 0 iso 3-OH as the major fatty acids, and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine and an unknown aminolipid as the major polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain T7-07T was 68.3 mol%. DNA–DNA reassociation experiments between T7-07T and Arenimonas malthae KACC 14618T resulted in a mean relatedness value of 22.2 %. Combined genotypic and phenotypic data supported the conclusion that the strain T7-07T represents a novel species, for which the name Arenimonas daejeonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T7-07T ( = KCTC 12667T = DSM 18060T).
