This study investigates the techniques and functions used by public relations (PR) practitioners at agencies in Durban. Although PR techniques and functions are known, there is a lack of research on how they are being applied and how they assist current PR practitioners in conducting their activities. Using the constructivist approach and the reflective paradigm of PR as a conceptual theoretical framework, this research aims to provide a view of how the PR techniques and functions are being employed today as well as report back on current trends. Through interviews with various PR agencies in Durban, the findings revealed that practitioners are applying the tech-niques and functions correctly for the most part. However, the media landscape is changing and is affecting the role of the PR practitioner by demanding they play a larger role in creating journalistic content. In addition, the changes in the digital media space require PR practitioners to apply new tactics to keep up with the fast develop-ment, especially when it comes to working with influencers. Although the practitioners believe PR is perceived as a legitimate industry, it is still regarded as a marketing tool. A shift is required in this regard as this signifies that PR may not necessarily be seen as a standalone industry by corporate organisations. To improve the current state of PR, practitioners need to conduct adequate environmental scanning and research in order to gain access to the decision-making table and prove PRs value to senior management.

Previous research indicates that many important changes in executive functions, or higher cognitive capacities, occur between the ages of three and five years. Additionally, a distinction can be made between the cognitive functions associated with two different cortical regions. The functions of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DL-PFC) are assessed using 'cool' tasks that are abstract and decontextualised. In contrast, the functions of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) are assessed using 'hot' tasks that require flexible appraisal of the affective significance of stimuli (Zelazo & Müller, 2002). Different clinical populations have been hypothesized to differ in terms of their impairment on tasks associated with each area of functioning. Current research conclusions regarding the primacy of hot versus cool executive function impairments are limited, however, as they have not taken complexity into account. That is, tasks currently used in investigations of hot and cool executive functions might differ in terms of the complexity of the cognitive processes that the tasks require. Therefore, comparisons across tasks may be misleading because these tasks vary in terms of the demands they place on participants as well as their hot versus cool status. While complexity theories have been applied to a number of cool tasks, only one hot task, those measuring theory-of-mind abilities, have been analysed in terms of complexity. One aim of the current research was to modify several tasks presumed to measure OFC performance to include a complexity manipulation. Tasks from three hot domains (conditional discrimination, the Children's Gambling Task, and future-oriented decision-making) were analysed in terms of their relational complexity, that is, the number of related entities or arguments inherent in a task or concept (Halford, 1993). Based on these complexity analyses, binary-relational and ternary-relational items of each of these tasks were developed or existing tasks were selected and/or modified. The binary-relational items were closely matched to the ternary-relational items in terms of stimuli and procedure, however, they were lower in complexity. After pilot testing, the three new measures of hot executive functioning were included in a larger test battery that was administered to a sample of 120 normally developing 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-old children. Existing binary- and ternary-relational items assessing theory-of-mind (a hot task) and three cool measures (transitivity, class inclusion and the Dimensional Change Card Sort test) were also included. The inclusion of measures of both hot and cool executive functions, each with complexity manipulated, allowed for the examination of a possible differential age of emergence of executive abilities associated with the DL-PFC versus the OFC. In support of the relational complexity approach, significant complexity effects were found across all seven tasks. Items at a higher level of complexity were experienced as relatively more difficult by children of all ages. Significant effects of age were also observed, with performance across all tasks increasing with age. The age effects were strongest on the ternary-relational items. The pass-fail data indicated that the majority of children in all age groups succeeded on the binary-relational items. However, it was not until a median of five years of age that children were able to process ternary relations. Consequently, the ternary-relational items produce the greatest differences in performance between the four age groups. The overall pattern of the results also suggested that a distinction can be made between the ages of emergence of abilities associated with the OFC versus the DL-PFC. The results of the pass-fail percentages, patterns of age-related change and age effects on domain factor scores all suggested that while hot executive functions may begin to develop around four years of age, similar levels of improvement are not seen in cool executive functions until five years of age. Thus, the ability to succeed on ternary-relational items of hot executive function tasks appeared to emerge slightly earlier than the cool executive function tasks. Complexity appears to be a critical factor underlying children's performance on executive function tasks, and future assessment regarding the development of executive abilities will benefit from keeping this in mind. While some refinement of new task items may be beneficial, the current test battery may have utility in further examinations of the executive profiles underlying clinical groups, such as children with autism and ADHD.

According to George Bernard Shaw, “The main difficulty with communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished.” Effective internal communication is crucial for successful organisations as it affects the ability of strategic managers to engage employees and achieve objectives (Welch & Jackson, 2007:177). According to Toth (2007:480), internal communication is one of the most important specialities of public relations, it is the force that develops “structures and cultures” within an organisation. Mersham and Skinner (2001:8) infer that communication permeates all activities in an organisation: it represents an important work tool through which individuals understand their organisational role and integrates organisational subunits. According to Grunig and Hunt (1984:23) symmetrical public relations models will increase the likelihood of employee job satisfaction and their satisfaction with the organisation as a whole. In addition, Toth states that “satisfied employees are more likely to be loyal to the organization they can identify with” (2007:481). The author further propounds that “the more participative the culture, the more symmetrical system of communication”. To augment the aforementioned statement, Kitchen argues that an organisation’s communication system and models are an important contributing factor for staff morale and productivity (2001:81). Employees tend to have higher morale and are more motivated in the workplace if all channels of communication are open. To extrapolate “open communication” systems, this paper will distil Grunig and Hunt’s (1984:21-31) symmetrical model of public relations as departure point to effective corporate communication, but also focus extensively on the internal communication matrix (Welch & Jackson, 2007:185) that will provide answers to the anti-luvial question on who communicates, to whom, in what way, with what content and for what purpose (Welch & Jackson, 2007:185). A modern organisation cannot function effectively without a positive internal climate and well-functioning channels of internal communication. To research the goals of the organisation’s internal communication strategy it should be responsive to employee needs and concerns (Seitel, 2004:288). The author further propounds the importance of internal publics as a stakeholder by arguing that in the new information era, managers have realised that the assets of the institution lie very much in the hands of the employees (Seitel, 2004:288). According to Garbarino (1977:32) the concept of culture is not new, as Ethnographers have studied the cultures of various societies since the 17th century. It is however only since the 1980’s that the impact of culture on organisational processes is being studied by scholars (Smircich & Calas, 1987). Organisational-or corporate culture is understood to be the firmly implanted values and assumptions of the organisation (Ouchi, 1981; Schein, 1990). Martin, Sitkin and Boehm (1985:99-124) identified two schools of thought regarding the question of cultural change. Cultural pragmatists argue that it can be changed due to the fact that it is a cultural efficiency managed to suit organisational goals set by the dominant coalition. Wilkins and Ouchi (1983:479) on the other hand argue that corporate culture is something that develops over time through unconscious evolution among a majority of people in the organisation, not through the dominant coalition. “Cultures specific to an organization evolve over time and influence the way in which individuals in the organization interact and react to the challenges posed by the environment” (Sriramesh et al., 1992:584). Sriramesh, Grunig and Dozier (1996) followed the lead of other organisational scholars (e.g. Wilkins 1983a) by using organisational culture to explain variables of primary interest to scholars in the field of public relations. They used corporate culture in particular to explain the nature of the communication system inside organisations. Grunig, Grunig and Dozier (2002:482) generated theoretical propositions about two distinct types of organisational culture which they contrasted as “authoritarian” and “participative” cultures in the Excellence study. This study further aims to establish the importance of values, symbols, meanings, beliefs, assumptions and expectations as an integral part of corporate culture, and that there is a symbiotic, reciprocal relationship between culture and communication. According to Sriramesh et al. (1996:239) altering one “will facilitate a modification in the other”. Siehl (1985) emphasised, after looking at change of leadership in organisations, that “once the desired value system was identified and articulated, the entire workforce (not just the managers) may have to strive to change or manage the organisation’s culture.” (Sriramesh, Grunig & Dozier 1996: 237). Sorge and Warner (1997:09) argue that “the core of culture is values”. Deal and Kennedy go so far as to say that they are of the opinion that successful companies succeed because their employees can “identify, embrace, and act on the values of the organization” (1982:21). The aim of this study, based on theory, is that there is a reciprocal relation between internal communication and corporate culture based on open symmetrical communication at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) can potentially modify the organisational culture of the University.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Collective bargaining has gained more prominence within the industrial relations system as the latter is undergoing a worldwide transformation process. None of the effects of this transformation process is potentially more important to workers than the impact on dispute resolution. Changes in world markets furthermore necessitate a renewed emphasis on quality of products and services. Within this context labour conflicts in the public service have potential crucial consequences for the South African government's ability to promote economic development and service delivery. The Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) with its nine provincial chambers provides the infrastructure for collective bargaining in the public education sector and plays an important role in managing conflict and disputes within this sector. The goal of this research is to determine whether the Western Cape provincial chamber of the ELRC (PELRC) is effective in the fulfilment of its statutory functions, with specific reference to its collective bargaining and dispute resolution functions. Data has been collected by conducting interviews using an interview schedule. The research indicated that the PELRC does perform its statutory collective bargaining and dispute resolution functions. The PELRC, however, is more active in terms of dispute resolution than collective bargaining. The research established that the PELRC does not measure its effectiveness. Results were inconclusive regarding the PELRC's effectiveness in terms of its service delivery. The research, though did manage to identify those factors that contribute to effectiveness as well as those that counter it. It furthermore indicated that when effective, the PELRC's service delivery has a positive impact on the said statutory functions.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kollektiewe bedinging het in vernaamheid binne die arbeidsverhoudinge sisteem toegeneem soos wat laasgenoemde 'n wêreldwye transformasie proses ondergaan. Geen van die gevolge van hierdie transformasie proses is vir werkers moontlik belangriker as die invloed wat dit op dispuut oplossing het nie. Veranderinge binne wêreld markte het verder 'n hernuwe klem op die kwaliteit van produkte en dienste genoodsaak. Binne hierdie verband het arbeidskonflik in die staatsdiens potensieel kritieke gevolge vir die Suid-Afrikaanse regering se vermoë om ekonomiese ontwikkeling en dienslewering te bevorder. Die Raad van Arbeidsverhoudinge in die Onderwys (RAVO) met sy nege provinsiale kamers verskaf die infrastruktuur vir kollektiewe bedinging in die openbare onderwys sektor en speel 'n belangrike rol in die bestuur van konflik en dispute binne hierdie sektor. Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om te bepaal of die Wes-Kaap provinsiale kamer van die RAVO (PRAVO) effektief is in die uitvoering van sy statutêre funksies met spesifieke verwysing na sy kollektiewe bedinging en dispuut oplossing funksies. Data is ingesamel deur onderhoude te voer waartydens 'n onderhoud skedule gebruik is. Die navorsing het aangetoon dat die PRAVO wel sy statutêre kollektiewe bedinging en dispuut oplossing funksies uitvoer. Die PRAVO is egter meer aktief in terme van dispuut oplossing as kollektiewe bedinging. Die navorsing het vasgestel dat die PRAVO nie sy effektiwiteit meet nie. Resultate was onoortuigend betreffende die PRAVO se effektiwiteit in terme van sy dienslewering. Die navorsing het wel daardie faktore wat tot effektiwiteit bydra sowel as dié wat dit teenwerk geïdentifiseer. Dit het verder aangetoon dat wanneer effektief, die PRAVO se dienslewering 'n positiewe invloed op die genoemde statutêre funksies het.

This study is a detailed investigation of a number of issues in colloquial Sinhala morphosyntax. These issues primarily concern grammatical relations, argument structure, phrase structure and focus constructions. The theoretical framework of this study is Lexical Functional Grammar.¶Chapter 1 introduces the issues to be discussed, followed by a brief introduction of some essential aspects of colloquial Sinhala as background for the discussion in the following chapters. In Chapter 2 we present basic concepts of the theoretical framework of Lexical Functional Grammar.¶ The next three chapters mainly concern grammatical relations, argument structure and clause structure in colloquial Sinhala. Chapter 3 examines grammatical relations. The main focus lies in establishing the subject grammatical relation in terms of various subjecthood diagnostics. We show that only a very small number of diagnostics are reliable, and that the evidence for subject is weaker than assumed previously. All the subjecthood diagnostics that were examined select the most prominent argument in the argument structure as the subject, i.e. 'logical subject'. However, there appear to be no processes in the language that are sensitive to the subject in the grammatical relations structure, i.e. 'gr-subject'. Further, there is no evidence for other grammatical relations like objects. In Chapter 4 we discuss the agentless construction and related valency alternation phenomena. It was previously assumed that the agentless construction, valency alternation phenomena and the involitive construction are all related. We argue that the agentless construction should be treated as a different construction from the involitive construction. We also show that the agentless construction and the involitive construction have contrasting characteristics, and that treatment of them as separate constructions can account for some phenomena which did not receive an explanation previously. The valency alternation phenomena are related to the agentless construction, therefore there is no valency alternation in involitive constructions. It will be shown that verbs undergoing the valency alternation can be distinguished from the other verbs in terms of the lexical semantic properties of individual verbs. Chapter 5 examines the structure of non-verbal sentences in terms of a number of morphosyntactic phenomena. It was previously argued that verbal sentences and non-verbal sentences in colloquial Sinhala differ in terms of clause structure. However, the present study shows evidence to the contrary.¶ The next two chapters deal with modelling contrastive focus and the phrase structure of the language. Chapter 6 is a detailed analysis of the contrastive focus (cleft) construction in various clause types in the language, and proposes a unified syntactic treatment of contrastive focus. Contrastive focus is in some constructions morphologically encoded, while in others it involves both morphological and configurational assignment of focus. The complex interaction between focus markers and verb morphology in various focus constructions is accounted for by general well-formedness conditions applying to the f-structure, and the principles of Functional Uncertainty and Morphological Blocking. In Chapter 7, we discuss the phrase structure of the language, in particular such issues as its non-configurational nature and the lack of evidence for VP. We propose non-configurational S and some functional projections to account for word order freedom under S and to explain certain morphosyntactic phenomena, such as configurational focus assignment. Finally, Chapter 8 summarises the conclusions made in previous chapters.

The objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the socio-racial quota system in universities. This is not to study the legal, social or legal effectiveness of its rules, which comes to be, respectively, the ability to produce legal effects, the actual legal effects themselves and the fulfillment of its precepts by society. It aims to study the effectiveness of the quota system from the goals it intends to achieve. We want to understand if the model adopted is able to achieve its social purpose. The affirmative action programs are policies to combat discrimination, the reduction of inequality and social inclusion of minorities. The socio-racial quotas are effective if at the end they are able to turn into reality what they envision. The beneficiaries of these quotas are low-income people, especially black students. Its immediate purpose is their access to services and opportunities of which they have been historically excluded. The mediate purpose is to give economic and social ascension to racial minorities, integrating them to the state of well-being and allowing its representatives to occupy social positions to which they had always been subordinate before. If this system achieves these primary purposes, it will be possible to say that affirmative action policy was effective. It's still early for this assertion, but it is possible to evaluate their suitability through the hypothetical-deductive method, checking if the formula adopted allows it to be effective in the future or if it is destined to failure. For that, after exposing the origin and evolution of the affirmative actions, their minorities, the normative political theories that support them and the design that inspired the Brazilian model, we proceeded to study the relevant law, the legal rules that formed the program as well as the collection of information contained in the copious literature on the subject, published in statistics and iterative court decisions on the matter, including the decision of the Supreme Court that held the quota system as constitutional. At the end, worrying misconceptions, such as percentage of quotas established in excessively high standards were observed; also adoption of model that keeps people separated by race categories; election of the controversial method of straight statement where the individual is confronted by a committee to confirm their breed standard; a methodology that honors the graduating students of public education and has harmed scholarship students and underperforming students from private schools. The socio-racial quotas in universities are an exclusionary system, which discredits the low-income population who did not study high school in public schools. The affirmative action policies practiced in universities are not able to achieve the noble goals that shape it, in that the most coveted spaces will remain unattainable for the vast majority of their clientele and will be occupied by a small elite segment of education audience that is not necessarily the recipient of the program.
O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a eficácia do sistema de cotas sociorraciais nas universidades. Não se trata de estudar a eficácia legal, jurídica ou social das suas normas, que vem a ser, respectivamente, a aptidão para produzir efeitos jurídicos, os efeitos jurídicos propriamente ditos e o cumprimento dos seus preceitos pela sociedade. Cuida-se de estudar a efetividade do sistema de cotas a partir das metas que ele intenta alcançar. Quer-se compreender se o modelo adotado é apto a atingir sua finalidade social. Os programas de ação afirmativa são políticas públicas voltadas ao combate à discriminação, à diminuição da desigualdade e à inclusão social de minorias. As cotas sociorraciais serão eficazes se alfim tiverem transformando em realidade aquilo que almejaram. Os beneficiários dessas cotas são as pessoas de baixa renda, especialmente os estudantes negros. Sua finalidade imediata é o acesso dessas pessoas a serviços e oportunidades dos quais elas foram historicamente excluídas. A finalidade mediata é conferir às minorias raciais ascensão econômica e social, integrando-as ao estado de bemestar e permitindo que seus representantes ocupem posições sociais as quais sempre estiveram subordinados antes. Se atingir essas finalidades primaciais, poder-se-á dizer que a política de ação afirmativa foi eficaz. Ainda é cedo para tal afirmação, mas é possível avaliar sua idoneidade pelo método hipotético-dedutivo, aferindo se a fórmula adotada permite que ela seja eficaz no futuro ou se está destinada ao malogro. Para tanto, após uma exposição da origem e evolução das ações afirmativas, das suas minorias, das teorias políticas normativas que lhe dão suporte e da concepção que inspirou o modelo brasileiro, procedeu-se ao estudo da legislação pertinente, das normas jurídicas que formataram o programa, bem como ao levantamento de informações contidas em copiosa doutrina sobre o tema, em estatísticas publicadas e em iterativas jurisprudências dos tribunais sobre a matéria, inclusive da decisão do Supremo Tribunal Federal que considerou o sistema de cotas constitucional. Ao final, foram constatados equívocos preocupantes, tais como percentuais de cotas estabelecidos em padrões excessivamente altos; adoção de modelo que mantém as pessoas separadas por categorias raciais; eleição do método controverso da heterodeclaração, em que o indivíduo é confrontado por um comitê encarregado de confirmar o seu padrão racial; metodologia que prestigia os alunos egressos do ensino público e tem prejudicado estudantes bolsistas e alunos de escolas privadas de baixo desempenho. As cotas sociorraciais nas universidades são um sistema excludente, que desprestigia a população de baixa renda que não estudou o ensino médio em escola pública. As políticas de ação afirmativa praticadas nas universidades não são aptas a alcançar as finalidades nobres que a enformam, na medida em que os espaços mais cobiçados continuarão a ser inalcançáveis para a grande maioria de sua clientela e serão ocupados por um pequeno segmento de elite do ensino público que não é necessariamente o destinatário do programa.

Cette thèse s'inscrit dans la longue tradition de l'étude des relations entre logique mathématique et calcul et plus spécifiquement de la programmation déclarative. Le document est divisé en deux contributions principales. Chacune d'entre-elles utilise des résultats récents de la théorie de la démonstration pour développer de techniques novatrices utilisant déduction logique et fonctions pour effectuer des calculs. La première contribution de ce travail consiste en la description et la formalisation d'une nouvelle technique utilisant le mécanisme de la focalisation (un moyen de guider la recherche de preuve) pour distinguer les calculs fonctionnels qui se dissimulent dans les preuves déductives. À cet effet nous formulons un calcul des séquents focalisé pour l'arithmétique de Heyting où points-fixes et égalité sont définis comme des connecteurs logiques et nous décrivons une méthode pour toujours placer les prédicats singletons dans des phases négatives de la preuve, les identifiant ainsi avec un calcul fonctionnel. Cette technique n'étend en aucune façon la logique sous-jacente: ni opérateur de choix, ni règles de réécritures ne sont nécessaires. Notre logique reste donc purement relationnelle même lorsqu'elle calcule des fonctions. La seconde contribution de cette thèse et le design d'un nouveau langage de programmation fonctionnel: MLTS. De nouveau, nous utilisons des travaux théoriques récents en logique: la sémantique de mlts est ainsi une théorie au sein de la logique G, la logique de raisonnement de l'assistant de preuve Abella. La logique G utilise un opérateur spécifique: Nabla, qui est un quantificateur sur des noms "frais" et autorise un traitement naturel des pruves manipulant des objets pouvant contenir des lieurs. Ce traitement s'appuie sur la gestion naturelle des lieurs fournie par le calcul des séquents. La syntaxe de MLTS est basée sur celle du langage de programmation OCaml mais fournit des constructions additionnelles permettant aux lieurs présents dans les termes de se déplacer au niveau du programme. De plus, toutes les opérations sur la syntaxe respectent l'alpha et la béta conversion. Ces deux aspects forment l'approche syntaxique des lieurs appelée lambda-tree syntax. The present document pursues the decades-long study of the interactions between mathematical logic and functional computation, and more specifically of declarative programming. This thesis is divided into two main contributions. Each one of those make use of modern proof theory results to design new ways to compute with relations and with functions. The first contribution of this work is the description and formalization of a new technique that leverages the focusing mechanism (a way to guide proof-search) to reveal functional computation concealed in deductive proofs. To that extent we formulate a focused sequent calculus proof system for Heyting arithmetic where fixed points and term equality are logical connectives and describe a means to always drive singleton predicates into negative phases of the proof, thus identifying them with functional computation. This method does not extend the underlying logic in any way: no choice principle nor equality theory nor rewriting rules are needed. As a result, our logic remains purely relational even when it is computing functions. The second contribution of this thesis is the design of a new functional programming language: MLTS. Again, we make use of recent work in logic: the semantics of MLTS is a theory inside G-logic, the reasoning logic of the Abella interactive theorem prover. G-logic uses a specific operator: Nabla, a fresh-name quantifier which allows for a natural treatment of proofs over structures with bindings based on the natural handling of bindings of the sequent calculus. The syntax of MLTS is based on the programming language OCaml but provides additional sites so that term-level bindings can move to programming level bindings. Moreover, all operations on syntax respect alpha-beta-conversion. Together these two tenets form the lambda-tree syntax approach to bindings. Endothelial dysfunction is a key modulator of the development of cardiovascular disease. Prior studies in selected samples have suggested that the association of age and vascular function may vary between men and women. To investigate the sex-specific patterns of this association, we utilized non-invasive vascular function testing in the Framingham Heart Study. We measured brachial artery flow-mediated vasodilation, a measure of conduit artery function, and hyperemic flow velocity, a measure of small vessel function, in 6790 participants (49±14 years, 53% women) in the Offspring and Third Generation cohorts. We found evidence of effect modification by sex on the relation of age and flow-mediated dilation (P=0.0001) and the relation of age and hyperemic flow velocity (P<0.0001). Using restricted cubic spine analysis, we observed that the relation of age and flow-mediated dilation was linear in men but nonlinear in women. To further characterize the patterns of vascular aging, we divided the cohort by the median age of 47 years old. In multivariable regression models adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, there was a greater decline in flow-mediated dilation with increasing age in older as compared to younger women (β=-0.113 95% CI -0.129,-0.098 vs β=-0.046 95%CI -0.064,-0.029, p<0.0001 for difference). Whereas in men the association of age and flow-mediated dilation was similar in old and young men (β=-0.038 95%CI-0.054,-0.021 vs β=-0.038 95%CI-0.061,-0.023, p=0.199 for difference). For reactive hyperemia, we found a greater decline in older participants for both men and women (for young men, β=-0.087 95%CI-0.200,0.027 compared to older men β=-0.776 95%CI-0.883,-0.669 p<0.0001 for difference, for young women β=0.141 95%CI 0.033,0.249 compared to older women, β=-1.054 95%CI-1.156,-0.952, p<0.0001 for difference). In a large, community-based cohort the patterns of association between age and conduit vessel vasodilation differed in men and women with an accelerated decline in women after age 47. Small vessel function declined more rapidly in older participants in both men and women, however the decline was more pronounced in women. Our findings suggest that the process of vascular aging differs based on sex and between conduit vessels and the microcirculation. Further studies are needed to evaluate the longitudinal patterns of vascular aging in men and women.

The aim of my thesis is to explore and organize the available information to the topic of Public Relations in the Theatre. The thesis is divided into two main parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part focuses primarily on the theoretical basis of Public Relations regarding the content of Public Relations as well as on communication as an integral part of PR, new trends, kinds of PR communication and means of communication. The insight into history and the cradle of PR - The United States of America is also included. The practical part introduces two particular theatres. The first is a representative of the public theatre - Švandovo theatre at Smíchov in Prague and the second is a limited liability company - Studio DVA situated also in the capital. The entire practical part is complemented by communication with the media and journalists, where my interest focused mainly on how the media and journalists evaluate the existing "theatre service", as well as what do theatres when communicating with the media right and what could be improved at the same time. The whole thesis continuously includes number of inspiring examples from practice either from history or the present.

Once a year for over forty years public relations’ practitioners in Sweden gathers, the political week in Almedalen, in the town of Visby. There they exchange knowledge and experience on all types of subjects using different and common communication models whether they are aware of them or not. The research on communication models is sparse, with one exception: Grunig’s model. Both practitioners and researches believe them to be important, even strategic. But too little knowledge about the models as such negatively impacts the understanding of public relations’ activities. It also contributes to the view that public relations is frittered. The thesis studies and analyses communication models of public relations. Models have been created by theorists and practitioners to describe the phenomenon, to understand communication as such and to facilitate communication between humans. The thesis addresses basic questions such as which models there are, where they stem from, who the originators were and the characteristics of each respective model. The basis of the study is comprehensive Anglo-American literature. All in all, over twenty different models have been analyzed in three different ways, i.e. the structure of a model, its historical deposits (sediment) and the application of the model. The result is manifold, since many characteristics form ten attributes and three families of models (a reduction). The characteristics can be seen as the models’ building blocks, e.g. the direction of the communication, the number of contacts and synchronism. Three model families are built on three differentiating characteristics, and the families are named correspondingly. Directional model (Riktningsmodellen), the Co-orientational model (Saminriktningsmodellen) and the Connectivity model (Konnektivitetsmodellen). The classification is of course not set in stone. It should be regarded as a first step to reduce the number of models in use and concentrate on the important characteristics of the models that help public relations researchers and professionals to solve problems and theorists to explain, foresee or guide to better public relations. Finally, five areas of future research are presented: a multinational study of models, a study of practitioners’ model use, a deeper history study according the concept of sediment, a notational system for models and, last but not least, a development of the Connectivity model. The last subject is the one that once inspired me to write a thesis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how much public relations people write in the course of their work; to determine if the amount and type of writing varies with experience, job type or employer; and to ivestigate what other tasks besides writing public relations professionals do. The sample was 198 members of the Public Relations Society of America who responded to a nation-wide mailing of 500 people selected from the Society's membership directory. Results showed that public relations practitioners spent 36.5 percent of their time writing. Overall, public relations people spend more time on publicity, media relations, and business administration than on any other function, but counseling management and research--two emerging area--are rating in the tope 50 percent. Thus, while this study does not provide any startling new information on the public relations industry, it does provide, for the first time, empirical evidence of what an average or typical public relations practitioner does. That was the primary goal of the study.

Innovations in computer technologies have provided the ability to access information from all over the world by the stroke of a finger. These technologies have given birth to the growing practice of telecommuting. There is much research available on telecommuting. However, there is a lack of research on this phenomenon in the public relations sector. This study seeks to fill this void by investigating the telecommuting behaviors of public relations professionals and providing a foundation from which further studies can be built. Survey questionnaires were completed by 122 Public Relations Society of America members. The questionnaires contained measures regarding perceived relative advantages of telecommuting, demographic variables, and telecommuting behavior. There were many important findings from the study. Interestingly, telecommuting is in the late majority phase of the diffusion process. It is also gender related. Surprisingly, this study found more men are likely to telecommute than women. Certain variables were found to be associated with telecommuting. Specifically, selfemployed individuals and those with more years in PR were more likely to telecommute. Most of the PR professionals who reported telecommuting did so in an unstructured manner. The main reason reported for telecommuting was to complete their unfinished work from the office. The majority of PR professionals did view telecommuting as valuable. However, here were differences in the perceptions of relative advantages with full- or part-time telecommuting. The advantages of full-time telecommuting only appeared to be attractive to those individuals who presently telecommute. Over two-thirds of the respondents who did not telecommute were found to be interested in telecommuting on a part-time basis. And most PR professionals, whether telecommuter or not, believed telecommuting will become a standard practice in the future.

This thesis asks the question, how should public relations as a discipline evolve, bearing in mind the cross-frontier impact of new and traditional media and the impact of globalisation, with companies asked to do more and governments able to do less. It argues public relations theory is overly ethnocentric, despite dramatic changes in the communication, political and economic environment and that there is a need to embrace adjacent disciplines such as public diplomacy if it is to become more credible and strategically relevant. Following an interpretative paradigm in the qualitative tradition, data were collected using 56 in-depth interviews of senior practitioners of public relations and diplomacy, largely in two developing and two developed countries. Data were analysed using grounded methods and thematic content analysis, helping illustrate data and ease presentation for the reader. The findings indicated there is a convergence of disciplines and practice, including cross-transfer of diplomats to the private sector and public relations practitioners to government service. They showed that diplomats are engaging in more media relations, commercial activity and broader stakeholder outreach. While public relations practitioners need to add an understanding of international politics and culture to their knowledge of business and communication. However, despite growing opportunities for public relations as a result of new media, advising governments, a broader role for business, complex issues requiring 1. Introduction ii narrative development and more multi-faceted, empowered stakeholders, there are challenges. It has a poor reputation. It is seen as superficial, largely remains in a tactical box and there exists a skills deficit. In particular it requires navigation, negotiation and networking skills to be learned from diplomacy. But this will require a transformation of education and training practices, particularly in developing countries, where public relations is growing fast. This study makes a theoretical contribution by expanding the thinking on the overlap between the two disciplines. They both have to adapt to the new-networked environment, needing to develop relationship and collaborative engagement strategies. In particular public relations needs to possess contextual intelligence and cultural empathy. These themes form the basis on which to further develop public relations theory, which is sorely lacking. A conceptual model has been developed. Further research should be undertaken measuring the quality of relationships with different kinds of stakeholders in different cultures. This research makes a practical contribution by guiding the public relations academy and practice towards a more integrated and balanced education and training template, and developing a ‘best of both’ tool-kit. The symbiosis of the two disciplines indicated by this research and the further integration with public affairs and corporate responsibility should help public relations add value to its theory and practice. This would help it become more credible and strategically relevant for the 21st century global environment.

In the postmodern era, as authoritative discourses are being undermined, there is an increased vulnerability of thoughts to the influence of the deliberate promotion of viewpoints. In this environment, public relations is becoming increasingly important. In this thesis I use the term �public relations� both in the sense of an extensive, specific industry, as well as in the sense of the general processes increasingly being used by all sorts of groups and organisations to get their voices heard, their effects felt, their interests defended and their aims achieved. Concomitant with this growth in public relations activity, public relations has emerged as a rapidly growing field of study within universities. This thesis critically assesses the state of this emerging university �discipline�. A claim of this thesis is that the mainstream public relations industry is dominated by a corporatist ideology stemming from a particular US business tradition. This ideology produces a problem for university teachers, researchers and ethicists of public relations because it pervades and dominates the textbooks, teaching, research and academic-industry liaison committees. I suggest that this permeation has helped to shape the conceptual tools which public relations people use to examine their own activities. The thesis warns that this interference in academic freedom results in a situation where a genuine �professional� status for graduates with degrees in public relations is rarely achieved. I suggest than many of these graduates may not have the intellectual equipage necessary for the level of detached understanding of their field which would be necessary for them to be true �professionals�. This thesis attempts to explain these inadequacies. It points to the presumption of political pluralism and an unproblematic consensual society which is implicit in the approaches of the orthodox exponents of public relations since the second world war. A contrast with the candidness of public relations theory in the more elitist and authoritarian period of the 1920s and 30s helps to make this point. In order to improve public relations theory, the more recent work of �New Rhetoric� theorists is employed. These theorists point to the inevitability and in fact the necessity of the persuasive activities which construct reality in all human cultural spheres. I opposed the negative critiques of some critical theorists for whom public relations is an abomination. Instead I argue that everyone now needs to be provided with an understanding of, and access to, their own means of generating public relations-like activity. I suggest that we all need to have some sort of control over the public relations which affects us because this activity is becoming the currency used in the maintenance of all of our postmodern identities. But in grasping the nettle of participating in public relations activity, I suggest that it is also necessary to foreground the oppositional aspects of society and draw on neo-Marxist critical and cultural theories. I employ Habermas and Beck in particular in order to expose the mainstream public relations industry�s historically rooted cultural mission to maintain the pretense that we live in a consensual capitalist culture based on conservatism and corporate American values. A reformulation of public relation theory along critical theory lines is necessary in order to provide the reflexive knowledge required by teachers and students of public relations if public relations is to justify itself as a university discipline.

Diploma thesis, with the help of available literature and facts we attempt to analyze the approach to the issue of monopoly providers and their engagement in public relations within the water service industry. Customers of monopolistic organizations are often of the impression that such a supplier does not communicate and interact with them as well as they should. This work will attempt to prove or disprove that in an environment of imperfect competition a supplier does not have firm desire to communicate with their clients compared to an environment of perfect competition. Another question is whether monopolistic organizations who invest in marketing initiatives will increase their profits or not. The work will use its own published in-house surveys, which should confirm or refute the results of this research.

In relational algebra, a recursive relation R is defined by an equation of the form R = f(R), where f(R) is a positive relational algebra expression. Such an equation can be solved by applying a general closure operator. Although some optimization is possible, the performance obtained using this approach is very dependent on the form of the equation which defines R. Principally for this reason, we have developed specialized closure operators for relations which are solutions to problems of practical importance such as transitive closure, accessibility, shortest path, bill-of-materials, and deductions by containment comparisons.
This approach has led to the following general results: (1) design, classification, and analysis of many iterative methods for evaluating recursive relations, as well as analysis of experimental results; (2) formalization of the concept of iterative evaluation of a relation; (3) demonstration that domain algebra can be used to solve problems of concatenation and aggregation of the information associated with a recursive structure; (4) proof that relational division and general containment joins are left-monotone.
More specific results consist of a collection of original algorithms which run well on secondary storage, as shown by simulations. Among them, we wish to emphasize the differencing logarithmic transitive closure (TC) algorithms, which are superior to the previously known relational TC algorithms, and the shortest path algorithms, which are in fact generic algorithms for path algebra problems.

Public relations has become an increasingly popular topic in the nonprofit community, and the demand for developing piblic relations as a core competency has increased as well. Since many nonprofit organization have limited time and resources for developing fuull-scale public relations programs, many rely on information obtained during one-day workshops or conference presentations presented by public relations professionals who have little or no experience with the concerns of the nonprofit setting. Using a program planning model, this paper describes how nonprofit organizations can increase the capacity and effectiveness of their public relations efforts by building relationships with key stakeholders.

This study attempted to determine what specific course criteria pubic relations educators believed to be most important in an international public relations course. The researcher provided fifty-seven public relations educators with fifty statements covering potential areas an international public relations course could include. The statements covered the areas of business, media, culture, government and miscellaneous. Each public relations educators was asked to sort the statements according to how much he or she agreed or disagreed with them.The QMETHOD program was used to determine two factor groups from the nineteen responses received. The factor groups, Type I and Type II. Type I consisted of twelve public relations educators and Type II consisted of seven public relations educators.Public relations educators in both groups agreed that an international public relations course should teach students to follow global current events and public relations issues, should cover various countries and their cultural taboos, and teach students to identify social trends abroad.The researcher expected public relations educators to support an international public relations course structure which favored the study of a broad range of international public relations at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to achieve a consensus on statements relating to cultural sensitivity training. For the most part, the researcher's expectations were met. However, more technical skills issues (i.e., fundamental, pragmatic public relations knowledge needed to execute public relations plans) were raised than expected, and educators' views on the level at which international public relations should be taught differed from what the researcher had anticipated.

Since public relations specialists began working in public school districts in the 1970s, only five percent of public school districts in Indiana have employed these specialists. The objective of the study was to identify factors that would explain why so few districts employ specialists. The study focused on the impact that employing a public relations specialist had on a district's overall public relations program as a means of explaining this lack of employment. The study tested the hypothesis that school districts with specialists would differ significantly from districts without specialists in the National School Public Relations Association standards employed by the districts.Superintendents of all 263 Indiana public school districts were asked to complete a 45question survey that identified public relations standards met in 11 categories established by the National School Public Relations Association for a minimum public relations program. The study received a 62 percent response rate.The respondents were divided into two categories: districts with specialists and districts without specialists. Districts with specialists answered 65 percent of the questions in the survey yes, indicating that they employed particular NSPRA standards; districts without specialists answered 35 percent of the questions yes. A chi-square analysis found this difference signficant, which allowed the research hypothesis to be accepted.Further analysis found that advanced public relations education and training slightly increased a superintendent's likelihood of employing a public relations specialist and that superintendents with specialists attributed greater importance to public relations in particular communications scenarios.

Schadenfreude is a German word, which describes the pleasure that people take in someone else's misfortune. The aim of the present research was to investigate the social functions of intergroup schadenfreude. Chapter 2 presents Studies 1-3, focusing on the social functions of experiencing intergroup schadenfreude in the context of football tournaments, using both concurrent and retrospective methods. Study 1 did not find any relation between change in perceived relative status and intergroup schadenfreude, possibly because of the sample's low domain interest and identification. However, schadenfreude was positively associated with change in status in Study 2 and with change in performance evaluation in Study 3 as expected. Also, across all three studies, intergroup schadenfreude was associated with consequences corresponding to its social distancing (e.g., distance from or dislike of the outgroup and intention to humiliate its members) and social affiliation functions (e.g., intention to celebrate with ingroup members). Importantly, schadenfreude mediated the effects of change in status (Study 2) and performance evaluation (Study 3) on these consequences. Chapter 3 presents Studies 4 and 5, which investigated whether social status is specifically associated with intergroup schadenfreude, and examined whether this social concern helps to differentiate intergroup schadenfreude from victorious joy (i.e., happiness about a third-party's victory). I developed a new experimental paradigm to manipulate participants' concern for status to elicit feelings of intergroup schadenfreude. I also manipulated participants' concern for external rewards associated with the third-party's victory to prompt victorious joy. However, in both studies, the concern for external rewards was the main influence on both intergroup schadenfreude and victorious joy, although a multivariate interaction between the two motives affected these emotions in Study 4. Hence, these studies suggest that status may be only one of the many motives underlying intergroup schadenfreude. Chapter 4 presents Study 6, which was a vignette-based study investigating the social affiliation functions of sharing intergroup schadenfreude as a function of ingroup identification. Participants read tweets from an ingroup member expressing either intergroup schadenfreude or victorious joy. Identification was also manipulated. However, results showed that recipients of intergroup schadenfreude messages formed more negative impressions of the tweeter and intended to distance themselves from him/her more than recipients of victorious joy messages. Chapter 5 provides an overview of the findings, contributions, and limitations of these six studies and discusses directions for future research. Overall, this thesis went beyond the current focus on the antecedents of schadenfreude and took steps towards the development of a social-functional account of intergroup schadenfreude.
