The continuing dispute on Turkish accession within the EU illustrates that negotiations still hold much potential for controversy and that their outcome is completely open. If accession might not take place, then accordingly the European Council decision of 16/17 December 2004 ‘it must be ensured that the Candidate State concerned is fully anchored in the European structures through the strongest possible bond.’ How exactly this shall look like has not been elaborated in detail within the negotiation framework. Gradual Integration could develop into a realistic option for integration beyond full membership for the EU as well as for Turkey. At its core, it envisages a partial sectoral integration and is simultaneously a dynamic model in which integration could proceed in progressive stages. Turkey would not only be integrated economically but also politically, and would receive the right to participate in decision-making. Furthermore, Turkey would keep its status as an accession candidate, i.e. full membership would not be ruled out a priori. This is a key for Turkey and, at the same time, saves the EU from a loss of credibility.

ABSTRACTRecent efforts have been made toward the integration of the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle in the United States. The back-end integration seeks to address several management challenges: 1) current storage practices are not optimized for transport and disposal; 2) the impact of interim storage on the disposal strategy needs to be evaluated; and 3) the back-end is affected by—and affects—nuclear fuel cycle and energy policy choices. The back-end integration accounts for the various processes of nuclear waste management—onsite storage, consolidated storage, transport and geological disposal. Ideally, these processes should be fully coupled so that benefits and impacts can be assessed at the level of the full fuel cycle. The paper summarizes the causes and consequences of the absence of integration at the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle in the U.S., critically reviews ongoing integration efforts, and suggests a framework that would support the back-end integration.

ABSTRACT Retrovirus intasomes purified from virus-infected cells contain the linear viral DNA genome and integrase (IN). Intasomes are capable of integrating the DNA termini in a concerted fashion into exogenous target DNA (full site), mimicking integration in vivo. Molecular insights into the organization of avian myeloblastosis virus IN at the viral DNA ends were gained by reconstituting nucleoprotein complexes possessing intasome characteristics. Assembly of IN–4.5-kbp donor complexes capable of efficient full-site integration appears cooperative and is dependent on time, temperature, and protein concentration. DNase I footprint analysis of assembled IN-donor complexes capable of full-site integration shows that wild-type U3 and other donors containing gain-of-function attachment site sequences are specifically protected by IN at low concentrations (<20 nM) with a defined outer boundary mapping ∼20 nucleotides from the ends. A donor containing mutations in the attachment site simultaneously eliminated full-site integration and DNase I protection by IN. Coupling of wild-type U5 ends with wild-type U3 ends for full-site integration shows binding by IN at low concentrations probably occurs only at the very terminal nucleotides (<10 bp) on U5. The results suggest that assembly requires a defined number of avian IN subunits at each viral DNA end. Among several possibilities, IN may bind asymmetrically to the U3 and U5 ends for full-site integration in vitro.

Residential integration with the dominant native-born population is believed to be a crucial stage in immigrants’ overall assimilation process. It is argued that without residential integration it would be difficult, if not impossible, for immigrants to achieve full incorporation into the host society. This article compares the sociospatial experiences of African immigrants in the United States and Ireland. Results show that African immigrants in Ireland have achieved spatial integration with Irish nationals, while their counterparts in the United States remain spatially separated from white Americans. The extent to which African immigrants’ integration in Ireland can produce other forms of assimilation is questionable, however. Likewise, despite being segregated from whites, African immigrants in the United States have made some modest spatial gains that may facilitate their integration. The cross-national comparison draws into question the generally accepted notion that residential integration is an important intermediary substage in the assimilation process.

Current and future Air Force weapons systems lack the necessary power and cooling capacity to provide full systems level capability as a result of energy and thermal management limitations. Cooling capacity of fuel is already fully utilised leaving little room for additional cooling needs. Additionally, increasing speed, power, and miniaturisation of future systems continue to stress any thermal management capability that we can now deliver. Thus, the focus of this paper is a conceptual assessment of the key energy and thermal management technologies to meet the future energy challenges. It presents an overview of the current state of the art and also possible future research.

Focusing on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell hybrid Bus (FCB) powertrain integration, this paper presents a quasi-parallel dual-powertrain topology that can enhance powertrain reliability and extend optimization of energy distribution. This paper analyzes the redundancy of three practical topological structures for a dual-powertrain FCB, including a full-parallel structure, a quasi-serial structure, and a quasi-parallel structure. By calculation and comparison, the reliability of the quasi-parallel dualpowertrain structure and its corresponding fault redundancy is shown to be the highest. This paper also carries out an optimization design of FCB powertrain parameters by analyzing the power index and typical Chinese bus cycle. Furthermore, the innovative method of designing power sources is discussed in this paper. Not only power characteristics but also energy characteristics of batteries are fully taken into consideration in this paper. Off-board and on-board experiments verify the feasibility and redundancy of the quasi-parallel dual-powertrain. This research is of reference value for the study of FCB powertrains.

Faculty in 46 Christian college and university psychology departments reported whether or not they teach explicitly integrative courses. Data analyzed included demographics, books used, course titles, pedagogical content and methods, and course goals. Results indicate that 33 of 46 institutions offer a full or partial course on integration. Most integration instructors are experienced, male, full professors, and typically teach seniors. Younger faculty place more emphasis on a value-committed approach, and women faculty are more likely to use cooperative learning. Instructors identified course goals and key issues suggesting that student outcomes ought to include deepening personal faith, understanding previous scholarly integrative thought, and critically evaluating new issues from a reasonably developed Christian world view. The absence of widespread consensus on form or content suggests that integrative instruction is closer to the margins than the heart of many psychology curricula in Christian institutions.

ABSTRACT Replication of retroviruses requires integration of the linear viral DNA genome into the host chromosomes. Integration requires the viral integrase (IN), located in high-molecular-weight nucleoprotein complexes termed preintegration complexes (PIC). The PIC inserts the two viral DNA termini in a concerted manner into chromosomes in vivo as well as exogenous target DNA in vitro. We reconstituted nucleoprotein complexes capable of efficient concerted (full-site) integration using recombinant wild-type human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) IN with linear retrovirus-like donor DNA (480 bp). In addition, no cellular or viral protein cofactors are necessary for purified bacterial recombinant HIV-1 IN to mediate efficient full-site integration of two donor termini into supercoiled target DNA. At ∼30 nM IN (20 min at 37°C), approximately 15 and 8% of the input donor is incorporated into target DNA, producing half-site (insertion of one viral DNA end per target) and full-site integration products, respectively. Sequencing the donor-target junctions of full-site recombinants confirms that 5-bp host site duplications have occurred with a fidelity of ∼70%, similar to the fidelity when using IN derived from nonionic detergent lysates of HIV-1 virions. A key factor allowing recombinant wild-type HIV-1 IN to mediate full-site integration appears to be the avoidance of high IN concentrations in its purification (∼125 μg/ml) and in the integration assay (<50 nM). The results show that recombinant HIV-1 IN may not be significantly defective for full-site integration. The findings further suggest that a high concentration or possibly aggregation of IN is detrimental to the assembly of correct nucleoprotein complexes for full-site integration.

The article takes up feminist disability scholars’ request for an integration of disability (theory) into women’s and gender studies and intends to take stock of the status and development of this integration. By means of qualitative content analysis, excerpts of German and US handbooks of gender research are examined for their degree of integrating disability (theory) and for inherent ableism. Considering the scholars’ requests of full integration and a subsequent transformation of gender research the sample shows only minor signs of change and the request must be upheld.

ABSTRACT Concerted integration of retrovirus DNA termini into the host chromosome in vivo requires specific interactions between thecis-acting attachment (att) sites at the viral termini and the viral integrase (IN) in trans. In this study, reconstruction experiments with purified avian myeloblastosis virus (AMV) IN and retrovirus-like donor substrates containing wild-type and mutant termini were performed to map the internalatt DNA sequence requirements for concerted integration, here termed full-site integration. The avian retrovirus mutations were modeled after internal att site mutations studied at the in vivo level with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and murine leukemia virus (MLV). Systematic overlapping 4-bp deletions starting at nucleotide positions 7, 8, and 9 in the U3 terminus had a decreasing detrimental gradient effect on full-site integration, while more internal 4-bp deletions had little or no effect. This decreasing detrimental gradient effect was measured by the ability of mutant U3 ends to interact with wild-type U3 ends for full-site integration intrans. Modification of the highly conserved C at position 7 on the catalytic strand to either A or T resulted in the same severe decrease in full-site integration as the 4-bp deletion starting at this position. These studies suggest that nucleotide position 7 is crucial for interactions near the active site of IN for integration activity and for communication in trans between ends bound by IN for full-site integration. The ability of AMV IN to interact with internalatt sequences to mediate full-site integration in vitro is similar to the internal att site requirements observed with MLV and HIV-1 in vivo and with their preintegration complexes in vitro.

The pedagogical practice of acceptance paves the way to integrating those disadvantageous children who can only live their daily lives with support and would experience a learning process full of failures without the proper aid. Societal expectations and social integration can only meet successfully when the spirit of educational institutions and the attitude of teachers demonstrate an accepting attitude. The structure of the institution must furthermore undergo a transformation. When good practices are included in institutional regulatory documents and efforts are made to comply with them, i.e., the institution adapts to the individual needs of the child, then inclusion can be said to occur. Ensuring the conditions necessary for inclusion is a major challenge for the teaching community. Many creative initiatives launched for the purpose of implementing integration demonstrate that the harmonious cooperation of teachers, parents, and children is essential in the process. An example of such an initiative can be found in the second phase of our sensitising series.

A finite element equation is established based on generalized elasticity theory by applying a virtual work principle. Then, a penalty function term is added to the virtual work equation by imposing rotation and displacement as independent variables. An 8-node element with full integration, an 8-node element with reduced integration, and a 20-node element with full integration are constructed using difference integration schemes and shape functions. The influences of structural degrees of freedom and the penalty parameter on convergence are analyzed via the three elements. It is shown that the 8-node element with reduction integration and the 20-node element with full integration are convergent, whereas the 8-node element with full integration is divergent. The scale effects of a slender beam, a short beam, a thin plate, and a medium-thick plate are numerically analyzed. Lastly, the scale effects of the frequencies that correspond to the bending mode, torsion mode, and tension-compression mode for a pretwisted plate are studied. It is found that the frequencies that correspond to the bending mode and torsion mode exert a scale effect, whereas the frequency that corresponds to the tension-compression mode does not. The essence of the scale effect is that the rotational deformation of the microstructure is amplified.

Анотація:

Abstract This paper analyzes duopolistic firms’ vertical integration decisions with considering costs of sales forces and sales delegation under vertical integration. The main contribution of our research is showing that full vertical integration (separation) is more common when competing products are highly (weakly) substitutable. Second, contrary to conventional wisdom, an asymmetric vertical structure may not only be an equilibrium outcome but may also be optimal for consumers’ surplus in spite of yielding higher retail prices than those arising under full vertical integration. We also examine the impacts of vertical structures on welfare which have vertical merger policy relevance. First, when products are weakly substitutable, keeping vertical merger costs low may induce full vertical integration to be an equilibrium outcome which optimizes consumers’ surplus and social welfare simultaneously. Second, imposing a vertical merger tax increasing with substitution between products on firms may induce firms’ vertical integration decisions to be optimal for social welfare.

Background:Assisting people with severe physical limitations with information technology has been an active area of research in recent years. Many researchers’ efforts are built on assistive devices which are often used to offset the impact of the resulted physical impairments.The Assistive Context-Aware Toolkit (ACAT) is the widely known project in this area. After being released as open source, the developers’ community helped to integrate many languages such as French and Spanich. However, many languages are still messing and to the best of our knowledge, the Arabic-speaking users still can not use the platform as no significant effort to integrate the Arabic language have been previously undertaken.Methods:This paper firstly, provides an overview on ACAT; the specifically-developed platform by Intel Labs for Dr. Stephen Hawking. Besides, it describes the ways in which ACAT may be used to enhance the capacity to take part in fundamental and instrumental activities of every day living and upgrade one's autonomy in general.Secondly, we outline our contributions in integrating the Arabic language into the keyboard, the intelligent predictive text engine and all interfaces of this unique and highly configurable system. Results:Our integration evolved after resolving many issues and we succeeded in integrating the Arabic language in interfaces, keyboard and word prediction engine. Most of other ACAT features (Facial gesture recognition, Mouse Navigation., etc) are functional. Conclusion:This work is a step forward to make the intel ACAT platform completely available in Arabic language. Therefore, Arabic-speaking patient can now get the benefits from this platform and are able to perform common tasks such as documents editing and management, Web surfing, writing emails and above all, communicating with others easily.The Arabic Text-to-speech engine integration is planned for future works .

According to the existing problems and shortcomings of the manufacturing enterprise quality management, integrating with enterprises’ new needs of quality management in the recent implementation of QHSE( Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment) system, this paper built an EII( Enterprise Information Integration)- Oriented QMS( Quality Management System) model, discussed the integrating problems involved in the system, then proposed the overall EII model. By analyzing the information integration relations between QMS and other enterprise applications, this paper put forward some practical ideas and principles of system integration, then built the framework of EII- Oriented QMS solutions. The aim of this paper is making full use of quality information, improving the quality of management and control, and helping manufacturing enterprises to better understand what EII- Oriented QMS is and how to make it a successful project.

Modern symbolic computing programs address not only the manipulation of mathematical functions, but also process control. Symbolic computing can thus be a powerful tool for developing algorithmic engines that can be fully integrated in the controls environment and facilitates modular design of control systems. This technique has been applied to a special class of accelerator problems, namely the beam steering in transfer lines and accelerator rings in the CERN PS Complex. An optimizer for beam trajectories has first been developed off line then linked on line to process interface routines for prototyping. A beam optics program with a full graphics environment and symbolic functions was used to generate necessary information for the optimizer. An application program has then been written to integrate the system into the controls environment.

The study was conducted to examine the farmers’ choice on the technology of the paddy and cattle integration farming and determine factors that affected the integrated adoption. Primary data were collected through personal interview from 198 respondents divided into three categories (‘no integration’, ‘partial integration’, and ‘full integration’) based on the farmer’s utilization of manure and crop residues at Magelang Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. Then, the data were analyzed by multinomial logit by using ‘no integration’ as a baseline. The results revealed that 60.6% of farmers had applied ‘full integration’, although most farmers rarely adopt both fermentation and composting technology. In conclusion, formal education, frequency of training, and farming experience were found significant in affecting the integration of paddy and cattle farming practice.

Welfare initiatives introduced by New Labour have emphasised the integration of service provision by sponsoring the creation of new professional roles and by promoting closer interagency links. The Connexions service exemplifies these two levels of integration. This article argues that the process of integration in Connexions was limited and it offers two main types of explanations. The first set concentrates on the changes brought to the professional role of Connexions workers. The second uses the example provided by interagency links between schools and the Connexions service in order to explore the role played by power relations to explain limitations to integration. The article concludes with a consideration of some of the effects brought about by Youth Matters and by the introduction of Children's Trusts on the provision of services for young people in the future.

A previous paper proposed a supply chain model, comprised of a retailer and manufacturer, in which the manufacturer uses product pricing to maximize the profit of the entire supply chain. The increased profits gained from integration are then shared among all the supply chain members. The optimal pricing strategy was shown to be “products on consignment” for sale. The present study extends this simple two-layer supply chain model to a more complicated three-layer model, in which the supply chain comprises not only the retailer and manufacturer, but also an intermediate distributor. In contrast to the previous model, the present model not only considers the role of the distributor, but also the effects of product nonconformance at each facility in the supply chain. The profit function of each facility in the supply chain is established, including the sales revenue, procurement cost, and quality control cost. The investment cost at the retailer to improve the service level is also considered. It is shown that the total profit of the supply chain is maximized when the retailer’s optimal service level is adopted, where this service level is adjusted in accordance with the distributor’s unit sale price. Furthermore, after price integration, the overall profit of the supply chain is found to equal the retailer’s profit. In other words, the total profit of the manufacturer and distributor is equal to zero. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed pricing integration model under different quality environments. The results are contrasted with those obtained using a traditional pricing model, namely the “make up on cost’’ model. Overall, the present results show that the manufacturer is always the winner under partial price integration (i.e., only the retailer and distributor join the integration). Furthermore, partial integration is far less profitable for the retailer and distributor than full integration.

The continuum consists of (a) Resistance, (b) Discrimination Prevention, (c) Access and Legitimacy, (d) Inclusion, and (e) Integration and Learning. A psychological perspective is presented on resistance for HRD professionals helping leaders to facilitate diversity-related change.

The goal of distributed heterogeneous information integration is seamless interactions among different business tasks. To achieve the goal, the paper presents a novel middleware framework in service oriented computing (SOC) environment. We analyze the framework in detail and propose three steps for integrating the heterogeneous information resource, including heterogeneous databases. The unified user interface is provided which invoking and binding Web services more dynamically and flexibly in the framework. Especially, we put forward the specific realization process of the core modules of the framework. As an example, we propose the realization of wrapping heterogeneous database as Web services. Finally, we propose the services oriented business integration process and provide the remedial measures for the model of the business process integration. The approach can achieve low cost, flexibility to change and full of system extensibility for distributed heterogeneous information integration.

This paper was presented at the 14th annual meeting of the International Omega Association, held at Long Beach, California in October 1989.The integration of Omega and GPS sensors into a single navigation system offers the advantages of good accuracy under almost all signal conditions, low capital investment, and certifiable worldwide navigation. The accuracy of the existing Omega network can be progressively improved as GPS satellite coverage is fully implemented. This is done by having the GPS system update the Omega navigator. Eventually, the same equipment can provide full GPS navigation accuracy but with Omega as a back-up.This paper proposes a method of further improving the overall accuracy and reliability of Omega-GPS navigation. The conceptsof Omega-GPS integration, interoperability, modes of operation, and Kalman filter data fusion are presented. Four interoperability modes of operation and their ability to improve navigation reliability are also discussed.
