The article discusses smart tourism as one of the areas of smart specialization. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, the “Smart Specialization” program has been developed, which is the basis for strengthening the innovative potential of the regions. When implementing this component, it becomes possible to identify the strengths of a particular region and their targeted development. As a result of active cooperation with the relevant structures of the European Union, Imereti was chosen as a pilot region. The article mentions the role of smart tourism in the context of smart specialization of Imereti, first of all, it can be smart tourism, artificial intelligence in tourism, smart destination, the use of various communication and IT technologies. The article discusses the importance of smart cities, smart destinations, artificial intelligence, and the 5G network in the development of smart tourism. “Smart” tourism determines the prospects for the development of the industry. However, the study of this complex phenomenon is currently in its infancy. It should be noted that a comparative and comprehensive study of the experience of smart tourism will undoubtedly become one of the main directions of this research in the world. Keywords: Smart Tourism, Smart Specialization, Smart Destination.

This work analyzes how regional tourism dynamics (demand, supply and specialization) and innovation performance may influence tourism competitiveness. The novelty and originality of the analysis is the inclusion of aspects related to the sectorial priority options defined within smart specialization strategies in European regions as potential explanatory factors. By using a panel data model and focusing on regions where tourism is one of the priority sectors for Regional Innovation Strategies (RIS3, 2014–2020), the results reveal positive impacts of tourism demand, supply and specialization on the value added produced by tourism activities. Moreover, immaterial aspects related to the qualification of the regional labor force and innovation dynamics (investment in research in development) also exert a positive impact on tourism competitiveness. The novel results obtained regarding the impacts of smart specialization strategies show a high potential of the tourism sector to benefit from geographical, cultural and institutional forms of proximity. The results also suggest that knowledge externalities arising from interactions with both related or unrelated sectors—by exploiting interactions and connectivity with sectors with both low and high cognitive distances—may emerge.

We investigate the relationship between tourism specialization and economic growth. We deviate from previous studies – which have reported mixed evidence – by allowing the relationship to take a nonlinear form. We find that tourism specialization is associated with higher rates of economic growth at relatively low levels of specialization but eventually diminishing returns set in and tourism’s contribution becomes minimal. The policy lesson is that there is promise for tourism-led growth in developing countries but other economic activities must also be developed in order to carry the economy forward once the potential of tourism-led growth has been exhausted.

This article investigates the relationship between tourism specialization and economic growth while accounting for the absorptive capacity of host (tourism destination) countries, defined in terms of financial system development. We use the system generalized methods-of-moments (SYS-GMM) estimation methodology to investigate this relationship for 129 countries over the period 1995–2011. The results support the hypothesis that the positive effect of tourism specialization on growth is contingent on the level of economic development as well as the financial system absorptive capacity of recipient economies. Consistent with the law of diminishing returns, we also find that for countries with a developed financial system, at exponential levels of tourism specialization, its effect on growth turns negative. Significant policy implications flow from these findings.

The article examines the role of smart specialization as an innovative approach to the development of the tourism sector in the regions of Ukraine. The aim of the study is to analyze, systematize, generalize and improve the theoretical and methodological support for the introduction of smart specialization in the context of the formation of the investment potential of the tourism sector. It is determined that the development of tourism in the context of smart specialization allows combining economic growth with innovation and sustainable development. Smart specialization is focused on concentrating efforts and resources on a limited number of strategic areas that have the greatest potential for attracting investment and increasing the competitiveness of regions. The study showed that the introduction of smart specialization in the tourism sector contributes to structural changes in regional economies, increases the added value of tourism services and stimulates local development. The process of developing a project to increase the investment potential of the tourism sector on the basis of the introduction of smart specialization, consisting of eight stages, is substantiated as follows: analysis of the tourism potential of the region with the purpose of assessing the existing tourism potential of the region, which involves identifying its unique resources, opportunities for development and existing limitations; strategic planning of tourism development, the purpose of which is to determine the main directions of development of the tourism sector, set priorities and develop a long-term strategy; analysis of infrastructure development in order to study the existing tourist infrastructure and identify areas for its improvement; partnership and cooperation, the purpose of which is to establish partnerships with local businesses, scientific institutions and civil society for the joint implementation of the project; development of innovative solutions with the purpose of integrating innovations into all aspects of the tourism sector to increase its competitiveness; development of a strategy for attracting investments, aiming at formation of an effective strategy for attracting foreign and domestic investors in the development of the tourism sector; marketing and promotion, the purpose of which is to create an effective system for promoting the region’s tourism product in the domestic and international markets; monitoring and evaluation, in order is to track the effectiveness of the project and ensure that it meets the set goals.

The article reveals international challenges, national guidelines, and regional peculiarities of SMART specialization in tourism and recreation. In the course of the research, we offer methodical approaches to justify the SMART specialization of the region in the field of hospitality and recreation as a component of the general model of strategic development of the regional economy and a key factor of competitiveness. The authors determined that an effective tool for the strategic development of the region and the formation of sustainable competitive advantages, which has proven its effectiveness in the practice of regional management in the EU countries, is the definition of the critical SMART specializations of the region and the concentration of efforts on their development—using the proposed methodological approaches. Zakarpattia tourism and recreation spheres were tested for the conditions of adaptation of smart specialization. The calculations showed that the sphere of tourism, recreation, and hospitality as a whole is an essential branch of the economy of the Zakarpattia region and can develop based on SMART specialization. The key areas of tourism and recreation development in the regions that correspond to modern world trends and are the most relevant given the current military events are highlighted: green tourism, health resort, sports, rehabilitation, and inclusive tourism.

To examine whether tourism can effectively stimulate economic growth following a disaster shock, we apply a panel threshold regression technique to test the threshold effect of tourism development on economic growth of the 36 Wenchuan earthquake-affected counties in 2008–2016. The empirical results using the panel fixed-effects model show that tourism significantly contributes to economic growth, supporting the validity of the tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLGH) for the disaster-affected destinations. The results of the panel threshold regression model also indicate a threshold effect of tourism development on economic growth, implying that counties with different conditions of tourism specialization and industrial structure experience different impacts on the tourism-growth nexus. Specifically, the estimated coefficients of tourism on economic growth decrease with the levels of tourism specialization and industrial structure exceeding the threshold value. Based on the Tourism Area Life Cycle theory (TALC), we further divide the 36 disaster-stricken counties into six types based on the evolution of tourism specialization: Exploration-stage type, involvement-stage type, transition-stage type, development-stage type, consolidation-stage type, and stagnation-stage type. The empirical findings and managerial implications discussed are generally applicable to policymakers seeking new ways to invigorate the economy in other disaster-affected destinations.

Modern tourism is a complex socio-economic and cultural phenomenon of multifaceted significance. Apart from the traditional types of tourism, the modern (alternative, traditional) types of tourism are becoming more and more attractive. One of them is health tourism. Health tourism covers the following subtypes of tourism: balneo, spa and wellness, thalassotherapy and medical. Its development on a global, European and national scale is considered. In Bulgaria there are excellent conditions for its development. The role of human resources in relation to health tourism is also growing. Their personnel development, education and training are monitored. The index of specialization allows to establish what is the health and tourism specialization and the opportunities for overcoming the existing disparities in terms of staffing.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of intersectoriality within the cultural, creative and tourism industries in Italian local development. Design/methodology/approach The research design builds on the literature on culture-led development and adapts the established body of empirical research on industrial districts to tourism and cultural development. The quantitative analysis of intersectoral specialization and the clustering of cultural, creative and tourism industries in Italian local labour systems (LLSs) combines specialization indexes with principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Findings About 50 per cent of Italian LLSs specialize in the economy of culture and tourism, mostly in material culture, although tourism has the highest level of specialization. There are three main patterns of agglomeration and clustering. The largest cluster is that of the cultural heritage and content and information industries, which coincides with the systems of medium-sized and large cities, followed by systems of tourism monoculture. The smallest is made up of material culture, typically made-in-Italy sectors. The tourism and material culture industries are monocultures – where tourism agglomerates, but material culture does not. Research limitations/implications The analytical approach is quantitative and based on Istat’s Industry and Trade (2012) data set. Further studies are needed on the interaction between agglomerated specialized industries. Originality/value This paper contributes to the theoretical and political debate on the value generation and innovation potential of culture and creativity, and bridges the knowledge domains of local development and managerial studies. Novel statistical evidence on intersectoral specialization and the clustering of the cultural, creative and tourism sectors in Italy at the inter-municipal level is provided. This study helps to identify an Italian model of the economy of culture and tourism.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among leisure constraints, leisure constraints negotiation, and recreation specialization for water-based tourism participants in Busan. Through this study, coastal cities of Korea (e.g., Busan) may attempt to develop marine leisure infrastructure. To achieve the goal of this study, 339 surveys were collected from male and female adults who planned to participate in water-based tourism event in 2017 were delineated as the study population. A convenient, non-random sampling method was used to select participants. After examining the correlation among leisure constraints, leisure constraints negotiation and recreation specialization, the relationships among the three variables was assessed through multiple linear regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows. First, regarding sub-factors of leisure constraints for water-based tourism participants, intrapersonal constraints, interpersonal constraints, and structural constraints had negative effects on leisure constraints negotiation. Second, the sub-factors of intrapersonal constraints and structural constraints had negative effect on recreation specialization, and interpersonal constraints were not statistically significant. Third, leisure constraints negotiation had a partially positive effect on recreation specialization.

This article reviews the role and place that wine tourism holds in the specialization of the different tourist regions in the country according to the current Concept for Touristic Zoning of Bulgaria (2015). It was clarified for which of the tourist regions wine tourism is the main, respectively complementary type of tourism. Along with that, a comparison was made between the tourism zoning adopted in our country and one of the viticultural zonings which reveals five viticultural regions. It was established that wine tourism was listed as the main or a complementary type of tourism for four out of five identified wine - growing regions. An attempt has been made to explain the absence of wine tourism both in the main and in the additional specialization of Varna and/or Burgas Black Sea tourist regions which are part of the Eastern ("Black Sea") viticultural region of Bulgaria.

We explore the relationship between tourism specialization and structural change in an endogenous growth model, analyzing its implications for both economic growth and tourist flows. We consider a two-sector economic growth model where the development of tourism activities generates a production externality and a structural change, which modifies the resources-use intensity, ultimately affecting tourist flows. We characterize the balanced growth path equilibrium and analyze under which conditions structural change may generate fast economic growth, providing a theoretical support for the empirical evidence on tourism countries. We also show that structural change may alternatively lead to stages of rejuvenation, stagnation, or decline consistently with what advanced by the tourism area life cycle hypothesis. By combining these different results, we also show that an eventual phase of decline generated by structural change does not necessarily have to be interpreted as a poor economic outcome since there might exist a bell-shaped relationship between residents’ income and number of visitors.

This paper investigates the Tourism Led Growth (TLG) relationship, incorporating the law of economic returns and the Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) theory, along with economic complexity and globalization. To measure tourism accurately, principal components analysis is employed, integrating five tourism-specific variables for 127 countries spanning the period from 1995 to 2020. The empirical analysis utilizes advanced panel dynamic models that account for cross-sectional dependence, yielding robust evidence of a nonlinear TLG relationship. Our findings reveal an inverted U-shaped curve characterizing the TLG relationship in both the short and long run, highlighting distinct impacts of tourism specialization in each time frame. Specifically, higher levels of tourism specialization in the short run can lead to diminishing returns to scale in the long run. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates that cultural globalization positively facilitates the TLG relationship, while economic complexity exerts a negative influence on the impact of tourism on economic growth.

This study aims to provide appropriate site locations for a medical tourism cluster. The priorities that should be considered in the process of selecting medical tourism cluster include the likelihood of attracting medical service facilities for foreigners, the availability of tourism attractions for foreigners, and the ease of entry such as international airports, ports and etc. However, there is little discussion about which locations are suitable for medical tourism cluster. Thus, this study examines the likelihood of attracting medical facilities and services, the level of specialization in tourism and medical businesses, the accessibility to suburban and urban tourism resources in order to select the right location for medical tourism cluster. The results show that Bucheon and Suwon are the most appropriate locations for medical tourism cluster in Gyeonggi Province. An empirical research approach shown in this study has rarely been used in previous studies particularly within the context of tourism industry. This study has a distinctive feature in that it examines the level of specialization and conditions for such cluster.

Tourism is recognized as an activity with great potential for Brazil, not only because of its diverse tourist attractions but also because of the generation of economic dynamics and its capacity to absorb labour. This article investigates the influence of specialization, urbanization and diversification externalities on the tourism employment growth rate in Brazilian municipalities between 2006 and 2015. To this end, we apply Local Indicators of Spatial Association and spatial econometric models. Both techniques enable the visualization of a spatial and temporal overview of the convergence process in tourism employment in Brazil. The main results suggest that the externalities of specialization, urbanization and diversification positively affect the employment growth rate in the tourism sector. Nevertheless, the employment growth rate for tourism in neighbouring municipalities reduces local employment in the same sector, which we interpret as arising from a competitive effect.

This article examines the relationship between the level of tourism specialization (TS) and economic growth using a panel dataset covering 31 provinces in mainland China from 1995 to 2013. A quadratic function was introduced following the basic economic law of returns to overcome the weaknesses of constant returns to scale associated with the tourism-led economic growth hypothesis (TLGH). Using tourist arrivals as a percentage of host population (TA) and tourism receipts as a share of real GDP (TR) as the indicators of TS which represent respectively the level/size and the quality/structure dimension of TS, the system generalized method of moments (SYSGMM) regression results suggest that a meaningful inverted-U- or an N-shaped relationship exists between tourism specialization and economic growth. The purpose of this article is to investigate the effect of tourism on economic growth. Our analysis covers 133 countries over the period 1995 to 2007, including 32 countries highly dependent on tourism during that period. The results show that specialization in tourism per se had no significant effects on economic growth. However, countries that are both highly dependent on trade and on tourism tend to report significantly lower growth. These findings are consistent with tourism having an effect analogous to the Dutch disease.

Hospitality and Tourism are among the fastest-growing sectors and the source of foreign exchange with indirect-direct employments for quite an appreciable number of economies worldwide. The nature of the sector provides an avenue towards regional development through entrepreneurship venture creations, value addition to the abandoned resources, and regeneration of abandon natural resources with new themes as a novel approach. Tourism currently in a paradigm shift as a comparative advantage of destination is becoming less important than a competitive advantage. The traditional destinations are diminishing while creating novel destinations more relaxation-oriented while leading to residents' economically enriched livelihood. The paper critically analyzes the current tourism competitive position of Sri Lanka with a panel of five rival destinations by adopting shift-share analysis by developing two propositions. Regional Tourism arrivals in rival tourism destinations have been used to perform Shift-share analysis. Findings revealed (a) Sri Lanka as a destination is gaining the competitive advantage of four tourism regions out of six markets. The competitive strategies proposed as recommendations to gain market specialization to the regions with a competitive advantage; (a) market specialization by targeting the markets with a competitive advantage, (b) new marketing programs for markets with competitive disadvantage, and (c) collaborative programs among Asian tourism destinations. The results would be beneficial to Asian region tourism decision-makers trusted with the growth and application of competitive strategies.

This study applies a threshold regression model and considers three tourism specialization indices as the threshold variables in order to explore the nonlinear relation among tourism growth, economic growth, and other macroeconomic variables for a cross-sectional data set of 84 countries. Our empirical results show strong evidence of a nonlinear relation between tourism growth and economic growth, suggesting that it is not continuous and constant. The results do not support the view that one size fits all, and therefore countries with different conditions of tourism development experience various impacts on the tourism–growth nexus.

This paper shows that specialization in luxury goods accounts for the remarkable growth performance of small tourism countries during recent decades. Two two-country models are constructed for this purpose. One country is large and rich and produces traded capital goods; the other is a small poor economy that produces traded tourism services. The models differ only in the luxury good nature of tourism. In both models, the tourism economy grows sustainably because its terms of trade improve continuously. This result is related to sectoral productivity gaps. Throughout the transition, the growth differential between the countries is significantly higher when tourism is a luxury good. In this case, there is a faster increase in the tourism imports of the rich economy. As a result, the terms of trade of the poor economy improve greatly and its investment is boosted.

Students registered in the Tourism Department undergraduate program at the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) study 12 specialization requirements courses (36 credit hours) in one of the department specializations (Tourism Management - Hospitality Management) for 4 semesters. The Hospitality Management specialization study plan comprises two practical courses “Food Production” and “Service in Hospitality”. Both courses have a weekly 50-minute theoretical (In-class) foundation part complemented by a weekly 4-hour practical application part. Over the years, the location for the two courses practical application part has been a major concern, commercial properties as a training location or catering facilities on SQU premises? many questions were posed seeking to determine which location better enhances students learning experience and helps the accomplishment of courses objectives and learning outcomes. The current study aims to evaluate the teaching and learning experience of the two practical Hospitality Management Specialization courses: “Food Production” and “Service in Hospitality”. End of practical application reports of students enrolled in the “Food Production” course in Fall 2018 and Fall 2019 were analyzed. A survey was distributed to Spring 2020 “Service in Hospitality” course students. Then finally, interviews with the two courses instructors were conducted in Spring 2020. Students’ evaluations and responses were straight forward while instructors’ comments were thorough, correlating the investigated courses to the other study plan courses showing their wholistic effect on the program sustainability. The study outcomes are important in evaluating the practical courses status leading to an enhanced teaching and learning experience and is a step towards the undergraduate program study plan reformulation and update. The article look at the basic framework, fundamental principles, and operation potential of tourism zoning as applied to the Novosibirsk region territory. Land-use planning is defined as a tool for territorial development, long-range strategic planning of types of activity, as well as for socioeconomic problem-solving. A tourism zone is a territory identified to facilitate the tourism industry development, tourist resources conservation and sustainable use. For the purposes of tourist-recreational zoning, the authors conduct a detailed analysis of the natural and socioeconomic settings characterizing the Novosibirsk region, and the status of the current system of assigning location to tourist-oriented objects. The zoning of the Novosibirsk region was based on the analysis of the recreation resources distribution and the assessment of the functional recreational specialization of individual districts, which enable an identification of the zones with the highest potential for individual tourist activity development. In this regard, the authors analyse the tourist potential of the region and describe the general status of the tourism industry. The zone-forming factors considered are the degree of tourist-and-recreation development of the area and the tourist zones specialization, that is, the structure of tourist and recreational functions. Thus, in accordance with the degree of tourist-and-recreation development, the authors identify well-developed, moderately-developed, inadequately-developed, and potential tourist zones. In regards the tourist and recreational resourced, the authors classify zones as business, primary wellness, sporting, mountaineering, cultural-educational, and scientific. Besides, the authors identify the most relevant courses of development as tailored to individual areas of the region, and conclude that the most promising areas are those located in the immediate proximity to the metropolital city of Novosibirsk, with is account for by their accessibility and an adequately high development of the tourist infrastructure.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively confirm whether hosting the Winter Olympic Games can improve tourism balance or increase the number of inbound tourists, and to discuss how Korea could maximize this opportunity. It also attempts to identify other critical variables for improving tourism balances and further suggests that the certain characteristics of participating nation’s patterns of medal wins at the Games should be better understood to contribute to attracting more tourists. Design/methodology/approach For the quantitative analyses of the relationship between tourism balance and the Games, Newey-West Hac estimation is used to correct autoregression for seven host countries of the Winter Olympic Games in last 24 years. For the analyses of characteristics of specialization in medal wins, conventional revealed comparative advantage model is used and tobit estimation method is applied. Findings This research confirms the role of hosting the Winter Games in improving tourism balance and increasing the number of inbound tourists. The findings from analyses on country specialization in sports largely coincide with the existing literature, however, in addition to confirming the well-established significance of key variables determining country performance like population and GDP, this study also discloses the role of other variables like team size and population density. Originality/value Major contributions of this paper are two-fold: it analyzes the Winter Olympic Games which was rarely tackled; and relates hosting the mega-sport events with the service trade account. As the host country of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, the Republic of Korea has great potential to overcome that chronic deficit by attracting more inbound tourists. This study indicates how country characteristics of specialization can be used to enhance effectiveness of promotion strategy to attract a large number of foreign tourists to the PyeongChang Winter Games and consequently improve tourism balance.

Whether World Heritage sites (WHS) drive tourism demand is an ongoing debate. This study analyzes tourist arrival data at a provincial level in China from 1999 to 2014, and employs linear and nonlinear models to reexamine the relationship between tourism demand and the numbers of WHS. The results show that there is a significantly positive linear effect of WHS on both international and domestic tourist arrivals, and international tourism demand benefits more from WHS than domestic tourism. In addition, the effect of WHS on tourism exhibits an inverse U-shaped pattern where an optimal number of WHS exists. Finally, tourism specialization levels positively moderate the effect of WHS on tourism demand, and the relationship between WHS and tourism is not always positive.

The very long tradition of tourism education and research in Poland cannot be described easily due to different political systems during the last 70 years. This paper is organized as follows: first, a short historical background of higher education in a political and economic context is given. Second, it illuminates the important changes in education in Poland. The universities with the highest number of students in this field are presented and discussed. In Poland it is possible to choose tourism as a specialization in other study fields. Tertiary education institutions do not have to provide information to the central institution regarding their offers of specialization, which complicates the attempt to show the whole spectrum of tertiary education. The tourism units are situated not only in different departments, but also in diverse faculties. A short overview of possible organizational aspects is also given. Subsequently, the main research areas are analysed. Because the problem of tourism research comprises a broad range of research fields, it is hard to depict the most relevant research fields and to identify the main sources that should be investigated. This paper does not pretend to show all problems and subjects connected with tourism education and research phenomena, but rather attempts to highlight the complexity and limitations in identifying the most important issues of the complete system.

Using the “Computers are social actors” paradigm, this study brings the concept of power to human–computer interactions in tourism. Building on theories of social power and deliberate practice, the authors examine psychological effects of expert power of online travel review platforms (influencer) and its interaction effects with the power of users (influenced). Two expert platform attributes are conceptualized: specialization and experience. A significant interaction effect was identified between platform specialization, platform experience, and user power on perceived information-task fit using a 2 × 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment. When users are powerful, specialization affected perceived information-task fit for low-experience platforms; no significant effect was evident for high experience platforms. When users are powerless, specialization did not affect perceived information-task fit, regardless of experience condition. Perceived information-task fit mediated the effect of specialization on intention to use. The findings contribute to power discourses by exploring the workings of expert power.

This article represents current tendencies stemming from collapse in the price of oil, devaluation of the national currency, bilateral international sanctions after the accession of Crimea and events in Ukraine, the aggravation of political situation and closure of the main areas of outbound tourism, namely Turkey and Egypt. Such negative situation for the country in whole has some positive aspects of the impact on internal tourism development, especially in regions with favorable climatic conditions and developed material basis for the tourism industry. Primarily Kuban is among these regions. The region for decades has been asserting as a tourism and recreation complex with a unique specialization in sanatorium-and-spa treatment. It has great social and economic potential, developed infrastructure, natural conditions for the international specialization in tourism and for high-quality rest and treatment of Russian citizens. However, the analysis showed that advances in this direction are insufficient. Even with the favorable impact of external factors many development indicators of the region’s tourism industry in the pre-crisis time are lower than in 2005. The high cost of services that is beyond reach for many Russian citizens is one of the important obstacles for tourism development. Hotel services and usage of the sports infrastructure in Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana are more expensive than in foreign resorts, but are inferior in services, for example, to Austrian Innsbruck. The state regulation of the tourism industry, definition of the strategic objectives and development of mechanisms to achieve them are in need. Spontaneous development of the complex can cause damage and prevent to use region’s temporary factors and advantages in a difficult period for the country.

Since the 1960s, Halal industry and Islamic Finance have grown in parallel without implementing adequate synergies. Halal tourism is a fast-growing sector of Halal industry, and the connection with Islamic Finance has hardly been researched. The aim of this paper is to analyse whether Islamic Finance can play an active role in developing Halal Tourism. This topic has not been empirically researched in the literature. The methodology is based on a fuzzy hybrid multi-criteria method that satisfactorily handles the imprecise nature associated with the information provided by Likert scales. Our results show how culture has a direct moderating effect on the degree of agreement that respondents have over the active role that IF can play, finding that English respondents agree more than Spanish and Arabs respondents. Similarly, our results also show that the knowledge of the Halal concept makes respondents agree more with the active role of Islamic finance. This study provides insights to the main stakeholders, and it can be strategically used to foster adequate synergy between Islamic Finance and the development of Halal tourist products as a way to specialize in a more sustainable tourism.

Researchers about the world's Muslims have presented a collection of scientific works on halal tourism in many countries. The positive impact of tourism can be seen in terms of social, cultural, environmental, and economic. This article aims to see the trends and impact of the development of research on halal tourism around the world. To approach this problem, bibliometric analysis is used as a method that can map research specialization, and the meta-synthesis method as a technique for integrating data to obtain broader results. This study concludes that there are 25 top countries identified in publications related to halal tourism. The impact of halal tourism is positive on the economic sector, so the results of the literature explain that halal tourism brings foreign exchange, especially in the tourism sector.

Perceived crowding is an important measure in assessing the social impacts of tourism activities. The goal of this study was to determine if the method used to measure perceived crowding in the marine environment (numerical vs. visual approach, boat vs. swimmer crowding) affects the crowding outcome and to apply the concept to a high-density marine wildlife tourism site, viewing whale sharks in Oslob, Philippines. The influence of various variables, including specialization, gender, nationality, swimmer behaviors, and proximity, was also tested to see if they affected crowding levels. Results indicate that a visual approach is more accurate in measuring reported encounters and encounter norms, and that boat and swimmer crowding are not interchangeable. Boat crowding is a serious problem in Oslob (95.6% crowded). Specialization, nationality, and swimmer behaviors and proximity all affected perceived crowding. Individuals who reported feeling crowded were more likely to perceive negative impacts of tourism activities on the local community, whale sharks, and wider environment. They also showed higher levels of support for management interventions to limit the number of people and boats at the site and to better regulate or ban whale shark provisioning activities. This study provides important insights regarding how to measure perceived crowding in the marine environment and management implications for a mass tourism wildlife site experiencing overcrowding.

This paper introduces a new perspective on the impacts of tourism on host communities by analyzing the links between tourism specialization and quality of institutions. Our research has two principal aims: firstly, to test the significance and sign of this relationship; and secondly, to explore the channels through which tourism could affect institutional quality. To this end, an econometric analysis is conducted using a sample of 92 countries over the period 1995-2014. The results indicate that there is a significant and positive association between tourism specialization and institutional quality. Moreover, this relation can be explained through three main channels: level of income, income inequality, and economic freedom.

In this article, we sum up the literature on the study of Granger causality relationships between tourism and income using a meta-regression analysis. We conclude that the acceptance of the tourism-led growth hypothesis is likelier the higher the countries’ degree of tourism specialization and population size. However, neither these variables nor the level of economic development is relevant for the explanation of the probability of acceptance of the hypothesis of reverse Granger causality. Notwithstanding these results, we find that several features of the research design are associated with the acceptance of both hypotheses.

Heritage tourism in Chinese historic sites has gained importance and has become a widely adopted development strategy that uses architecture and urban ensembles to sell cultural experiences. These sites, immersed in heritage settings or traditional ambiences, embody an extraordinary dimension of Chinese tangible and intangible culture, which call for in-depth studies and critical understanding. This paper discusses how a condition of fragility has materialized under the aegis of economic boosts. The impact of cultural tourism on historic sites is assessed by considering two similar water towns expressing exceptional cultural values, Zhujiajiao and Liantang. The methodology envisaged ethnographic tools to highlight how development strategies have altered local communities, discussing the consequences on physical authenticity and sociocultural equilibriums.

<p>Currently, within the tourism market, there is a significant number of destinations that offer the same product, especially in the sun and beach market, so the search for competitiveness must be the objective that allows increasing the arrival of tourists to a destination, becoming one of the main pillars on which tourism policies are based. In this context, this paper aims is to ascertain whether there exists a causal relationship between tourism competitiveness and the influx of tourists to destinations. To achieve this, the Granger causality test is utilized, employing the econometric adaptation conducted by Dumitrescu and Hurlin, utilizing a sample of 18 Mediterranean countries spanning from 2007 to 2019. From the analysis carried out, it is highlighted that there is no causal relationship from tourism competitiveness to the number of tourists received, which is an important finding in the countries of the Mediterranean coast, since tourists do not value competitiveness in these destinations.<strong></strong></p>
