Abstract The Miocene Zhujiang Formation is the key horizon for oil and gas exploration in the Pearl River Mouth basin of northern South China Sea. With the help of core observation, seismic attributes and various analytical data, the sedimentary facies marks, distribution of sedimentary facies and depositional model of forced regression in the Miocene Zhujiang Formation of the Pearl River Mouth basin, northern South China Sea, have been studied. Forced regressive deposits were formed during the period when relative sea level ranged from highstand to lowstand and the sediments were forced to undergo progradation so that five sets of foreset delta deposits are developed in turn. In the early stage of forced regression, the normal delta where the delta plain, delta front and prodelta are not absent mainly developed. In the later stage of forced regression, the shelf edge delta with only the delta front and the prodelta, the longshore bar along the shelf break and the turbidite fan in the deep water of the slope area were developed. The favorable reservoir of forced regressive deposits are located near the upper boundary of the falling stage systems tract and the basal surface of forced regression, and they are the sand bodies of shelf edge delta, longshore bar and turbidite fan. The research results may provide guidance for reservoir prediction.

The Middle Jurassic – lowermost Cretaceous succession of Jameson Land, East Greenland records a marine, overall regressive–transgressive–regressive cycle with regressive maxima in the Late Bajocian and Late Volgian separated by a transgressive maximum in the Kimmeridgian. Smaller-scale regressive interludes took place in the Late Callovian and Mid Oxfordian. A shelf-slope-basin physiography started to develop in the Late Callovian due to increasing rifting and a relief of several hundred metres was attained during maximum end-Jurassic regression and deposition of the Volgian Raukelv Formation. The formation consists of a forestepping stack of laterally extensive shelf-edge wedges, each several tens of metres thick, composed of coarse-grained sandstone, showing highangle clinoform bedding and containing marine body and trace fossils. These clinoform beds are superimposed on the large-scale clinoforms of the shelf–slope–basin. The wedges onlap older shelf deposits in a landward direction and are overlain by thin transgressive sandstones or mudstones, or directly by the next coarse-grained wedge. The top wedge, comprising the Rauk Plateau Member, is of Late Volgian (i.e. earliest Cretaceous) age and is characterized by steep clinoforms truncated by internal erosional downlap surfaces. The clinoforms are simple avalanche beds, a few tens of centimetres thick, or they may be several metres thick and contain large-scale cross-bedded intrasets of probable tidal origin. The erosional events were associated with downshift of the succeeding clinoforms, recording minor sea-level fall and forced regression. The top surface of the Rauk Plateau wedge is incised by a system of minor channels leading to a large canyon-like valley. The wedge was deposited by transition-slope progradation below wave base during a period of sea-level stillstand punctuated by minor, stepwise falls. It provides an excellently exposed example of a laterally derived, coarse-grained shelf-margin wedge, showing high-angle clinoform bedding and representing an ancient counterpart to Holocene and Late Pleistocene prograding infralittoral wedges seen on seismic profiles across Mediterranean shelf edges.

Using 2D/3D seismic data and a large number of drilling and logging data and applying sequence stratigraphy, seismic sedimentology, and petroleum geology concepts, the characteristics of the sedimentary sequence of the forced regression have been analysed, the migration trajectory of the coastline have been reconstructed, the evolution model of the forced regression have been presented, and the significance for petroleum geology of the forced regressive sandbodies have been discussed. The falling stage systems tract (FSST) of the Zhujiang Formation present offlap high-angle oblique foreset reflection structure in the seismic profiles of the depositional trends and turbidite fan deposits with strong amplitude mound reflection structure are developed in the downdip direction of its front. The trajectory of migration of the shoreline shows a terraced downtrend in the direction of basin. The FSST is characterized by the shelf-edge delta without topset beds. The FSST was formed in the fall of relative sea-level. Five sets of foreset beds controlled by high-frequency relative eustatic were developed, therefore ordinal regressive overlap can be observed for the five sets of shelf-edge deltas in the depositional trends. The favourable reservoirs which were located close to the upper boundary of the falling stage systems tract and the basal surface of forced regression are sandbodies of the shelf-edge delta front and wave-dominated shoreface sands and the sandbodies of the turbidite fan. Those sandbodies favour the formation of lithologic oil–gas reservoirs by means of good trap sealing conditions, excellent oil–gas reserving performance, and effective oil source communication of fracture system.

Abstract A correlation is established in a north-south transect based on continuous outcrops. Considering the different reference surfaces and the geometry, three major depositional sequences can be distinguished which can be subdivided into a complex arrangement of parasequences. These third-order sequences are composed of a lower retrogradational and an upper progradational trends. The first sequence contains orbitolinid bioaccumulations in the retrogradational trend and oolitic-bioclastic shoals in the progradational trend. The second sequence exhibits, from bottom to top, a transgressive, a regressive and a forced-regressive trends. Ammonite-rich marls characterise the transgressive trend, whereas bioconstructions rich in coral-chaetetids-microbialites are abundant in both regressive and forced-regressive trends. The maximum flooding of this sequence is widely distributed across the whole Iberian platform. Finally, the third sequence shows the installation of homogeneous rudistid bioaccumulations in a retrogradational and a progradational trends. Each major sequence boundary marks a community replacement, whose respective fossil associations are dominated by (1) orbitolinids, (2) corals-microbialites, (3) corals-chaetetids-microbialites, and (4) rudists.

Empirical legal analysis is an emerging discipline of statistical and legal scholarship. Despite its importance, however, there is a lack of empirical research on the affirmative defense of force majeure, which eliminates liability for a breach of contract in the case of an unforeseeable and uncontrollable event that renders performance impossible. This study seeks to fill the gap in the empirical literature by addressing some central questions on preparing to litigate a force majeure defense. Relying on methods from categorical data analysis, I examine the various criteria that a litigator would use in assessing the strength of a force majeure defense based on contractual terms. This study was supported by a database of manually collected lawsuits, with which I analyzed 291 state and federal force majeure cases from the 19th century to the present day. The results highlight the key elements in a force majeure provision that weigh most heavily in favor of the party raising the defense.

This paper analyzes municipal expenditures in the light of horizontal fiscal interactions. I investigate total expenditures and a set of non-earmarked expenditure subcategories in the largest German federal state, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The empirical analysis is based on a Spatial Durbin Model in a panel for the years 2009-2015. Using a two-regime spatial matrix, I also examine the impact of agglomeration on the intensity of public expenditure interactions, thus testing the hypothesis that an agglomerated region can decrease the amount of public goods without losing mobile factors to the periphery. The findings indicate that significant municipal expenditure interaction effects do exist. The reaction functions also vary for different expenditure subcategories. Unlike spillover effects and fiscal competition, yardstick competition is an insignificant source of potential interactions. Expenditure interaction is fiercer if there is less agglomeration in a municipality. Urbanized and populous municipalities appear to benefit from agglomeration economies, a fact that enables them to spend less. Robustness checks confirm the findings.

Tropical cyclones have enormous destructive potential. In 2018 continental Por- tugal has been affected by hurricane Leslie, the weather-related event having the highest impact ever on the property portfolio of the portuguese insurance company Fidelidade, causing several millions euros of losses. The fear is that, in the near future, the occurrence of this type of events increases in intensity and frequency, as a consequence of the climate change due to the warming of the planet. Quantifying the potential loss to which the property portfolio of Fidelidade could be subject to, helps in approximately determining premiums and capital reserves, as well as in defining the coverage to be provided. In this work, an approach to model the costs caused by a tropical cyclone extreme event is presented. The model is based on the losses incurred by the property port- folio of Fidelidade due to hurricane Leslie. By using the estimated models, it is possible to produce cost estimates for different scenarios of interest for the com- pany. The estimated models are also used to build a risk map for the councils of continental Portugal. The results obtained indicate that the councils with the estimated higher average cost ratio are all located along the coast of the country.

De facto, os ciclones tropicais têm um enorme potencial de destruição. A preocupação é que, em breve, a ocorrência deste tipo de fenómenos aumente em intensidade e frequência, como consequência das mudanças climáticas provocadas pelo aquecimento global. Quantificar a potencial perda à qual a companhia Fidelidade pode estar sujeita ajuda a determinar aproximadamente os prémios e provisões, assim como a definir a cobertura a ser providenciada. Neste trabalho, é apresentada uma abordagem para modelar os custos causados por um ciclone tropical extremo. O modelo é baseado nas perdas provocadas ao portfolio da Fidelidade pelo furacão Leslie. Ao usar os modelos, é possível produzir custos estimados para diferentes cenários de interesse da companhia. Os modelos estimados sã também utilizados para construir um mapa de risco para os conselhos de Portugal continental. Os resultados obtidos indicam que os conselhos com a maior taxa média de custos estimada estão localizados ao longo da costa do país.

This study employs the Human Capital Theory (HCT), which postulates that the education of women is positively related to the likelihood of their labour force participation, in order to investigate quarterly dynamics in the labour force. This approach is an advancement of knowledge gained from previous studies such as Serumanga-Zake and Kotze (2004) and Ntuli (2004) who investigated the annual dynamics in FLFP. Investigating quarterly dynamics in FLFP is prudent as the market economy is very dynamic particularly at a point when the world economy is experiencing recession. Data for the study are extracted from the 2008 Quarterly Labour Force Survey conducted by Statistics South Africa. Logistic regression analysis modeling was employed with the dependent variable, FLFP, as a binary outcome. Other variables controlled in the analysis are gender, population group, age, marital status, education status, sector, main industry, main occupation and province. The results show that there is association between education status and FLFP status. Findings from this research are expected to contribute to the knowledge about trends in FLFP in South Africa and aid in planning of interventions aimed at improving the status of women as one of the critical steps in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The wheel-rail contact mechanics and dynamics that are of great importance to the railroad industry are evaluated by applying statistical methods to the large volume of data that is collected on the VT-FRA state-of-the-art roller rig. The intent is to use the statistical principles to highlight the relative importance of various factors that exist in practice to longitudinal and lateral tractions and to develop parametric models that can be used for predicting traction in conditions beyond those tested on the rig. The experiment-based models are intended to be an alternative to the classical traction-creepage models that have been available for decades. Various experiments are conducted in different settings on the VT-FRA Roller Rig at the Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety at Virginia Tech to study the relationship between the traction forces and the wheel-rail contact variables. The experimental data is used to entertain parametric and non-parametric statistical models that efficiently capture this relationship. The study starts with single regression models and investigates the main effects of wheel load, creepage, and the angle of attack on the longitudinal and lateral traction forces. The assumptions of the classical linear regression model are carefully assessed and, in the case of non-linearities, different transformations are applied to the explanatory variables to find the closest functional form that captures the relationship between the response and the explanatory variables. The analysis is then extended to multiple models in which interaction among the explanatory variables is evaluated using model selection approaches. The developed models are then compared with their non-parametric counterparts, such as support vector regression, in terms of "goodness of fit," out-of-sample performance, and the distribution of predictions.

The interaction between the wheel and rail plays an important role in the dynamic behavior of railway vehicles. The wheel-rail contact has been extensively studied through analytical models, and measuring the contact forces is among the most important outcomes of such models. However, these models typically fall short when it comes to addressing the practical problems at hand. With the development of a high-precision test rig—called the VT-FRA Roller Rig, at the Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety (CVeSS)—there is an increased opportunity to tackle the same problems from an entirely different perspective, i.e. through statistical modeling of experimental data. Various experiments are conducted in different settings that represent railroad operating conditions on the VT-FRA Roller Rig, in order to study the relationship between wheel-rail traction and the variables affecting such forces. The experimental data is used to develop parametric and non-parametric statistical models that efficiently capture this relationship. The study starts with single regression models and investigates the main effects of wheel load, creepage, and the angle of attack on the longitudinal and lateral traction forces. The analysis is then extended to multiple models, and the existence of interactions among the explanatory variables is examined using model selection approaches. The developed models are then compared with their non-parametric counterparts, such as support vector regression, in terms of "goodness of fit," out-of-sample performance, and the distribution of the predictions. The study develops regression models that are able to accurately explain the relationship between traction forces, wheel load, creepage, and the angle of attack.

The monograph presents current trends in the management of internal reserves to reduce the cost of production of machine-building enterprises. The approaches of various scientists to the interpretation of the concept of "enterprise reserve" are analyzed. The classification of the types of reserves of the enterprise is given and supplemented by the classification of the resources that form the reserve. Methodological support for the management of internal reserves for reducing the cost of industrial products and methods for identifying them are presented. A technology for studying the cost of production of machine-building enterprises is proposed. The analysis of the state and trends of development of machine-building enterprises of the Russian Federation is carried out and the key problems are identified. The practice of organizing the processes of managing internal reserves to reduce the cost of production at machine-building enterprises is presented. The factors of influence on the change in the cost of production are estimated using factor and correlation-regression analyses. A system for managing internal reserves for reducing the cost of production is formed and the stages and principles of its construction are given. A program of measures to manage internal reserves to reduce the cost of machine-building products and an algorithm for identifying them have been developed. For students, researchers and practitioners.

Although microfinance started as a movement to improve women’s economic well-being through increased female entrepreneurship in particular, its impact on women’s attitudes toward and participation in the labour market is not fully understood. We fill this gap by combining data on branch locations of the major microfinance institutions in Bangladesh with household survey data and implement a spatial regression discontinuity design. Our estimates suggest significant effects of access to credit on women’s work; attitudes towards gender, social and employment norms; and psychosocial well-being. Access to credit increases labour force participation in terms of paid employment and traditional economic participation. Relatedly, respondents are more likely to be prevented from working by their husbands or other household members. They are also more likely to express traditional beliefs in relation to gender, social, and employment norms. Finally, access to credit leads to a loss in life satisfaction, financial satisfaction, health satisfaction, and overall happiness.

It is undeniable that current international relations are exhibiting regressive trends that target International Law Rule of Law. These trends have limited the space for the construction of a coherent discourse coming from the constitutional school of International Law; however, this scenario is not only the result of speculative behavior of certain states. It lies—as well—in the lack of an articulate theory offered by international constitutionalism directed to explain the consequences of asserting the existence of a fundamental norm in the international realm. If the constitutional movement maintains that International Law has a constitution, then: Why is there no attempt to label current world events, not only as illegal but as breaches of its constitution? Why are legal norms being formed in the context of those breaches not labeled as constitutionally flawed? This chapter will attempt to analyze this in order to strengthen the constitutionalization argument in our discipline.

AbstractNew dimensions added in the projection models in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-79111-7_4, the labour force participation and the sector of activity, are modelled using regression parameters. In this chapter, we show how building alternative scenarios with this type of inputs. In the first example, we test an assumption in which women with young children at home have the same participation rate as other women. The second example, we test a scenario in which labour force participation rates of women gradually increase and reach those of men by 2060. The code to implement those alternative scenarios is explained, and some results are presented.

AbstractIslam’s increased visibility in France over the past 20 years has challenged social workers, confronted with new practices that often provoke consternation and cause professional difficulties. Social workers’ relationships with members of society who are motivated by faith, and also with their colleagues, some of whom openly express their Muslim identity, force them to adapt to new religious frames of reference. Social workers are also occasionally compelled to revisit the Christian roots of social work that many of them felt had been left behind by the profession. These patterns also explain the prevalence of reminders about the secular basis of social work, in a sector where radicalisation among the young tends to be perceived as a regressive influence on freedom of expression and, above all, on women’s rights.

AbstractThis chapter shows how implementing new dimensions into the microsimulation model. As examples, we add two dimensions that can hardly be implemented in a classical projection model: the labour force participation and the sector of activity (formal/informal). Those modules are implemented through statistical modeling using regression parameters. They use as predictors individual characteristics, such as age, sex, region, education, and for women, a binary variable indicating if she gave birth to a child within the last five years. Those two new variables are thus dynamically implemented, as assumptions on fertility have a direct impact on their outcomes.

AbstractThe refugee system in the Americas is codified in instruments like the Refugee Convention and Protocol, the Cartagena Declaration, the Mexico Action Plan and Brazil Declaration, and implementing legislation within member states. However, there is a widely recognized gap between institutional protections and implementation in practice. This chapter traces the case of Colombian forced migration in Ecuador to advance the argument that the conceptualization and application of the refugee system has shifted considerably over the past decade. Domestic political incentives, international reputation, and populist imaginaries of el pueblo have led to a discourse of openness that relies on generosity, globalism, and solidarity narratives that mask the regression of a rights-based refugee regime, exposing contradictions in the system. The chapter draws on discourse analysis of political speeches and media stories in Ecuador, as well as interviews with key stakeholders in the UN system, NGOs, the state, and migrants in Ecuador.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the cutting forces response during the orthogonal cutting of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and PTFE-based composites using the Taguchi method. Cutting experiments were conducted using the L27 orthogonal array and the effects of the cutting parameters (feed rate, cutting speed and rake angle) on the cutting force were analyzed using the S/N ratio response and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Statistical models that correlate the cutting force with process variables were developed using ANOVA and polynomial regression. The variation of the apparent friction coefficient was analyzed with respect to tool geometry and the cutting process. The results indicated that cutting and thrust forces increase with increasing feed rate, and decrease with increasing rake angles from negative to positive values and increasing cutting speed. A power law relationship between the apparent friction coefficient and the normal force exerted by the chip on the tool-rake face was identified, the former decreasing with an increasing normal force.

Abstract Combining today’s computer technology with new generation, multiple-action, hydraulic press equipment, has created a new process opportunity in deep drawing. Integrating these modern machine and computer controls with innovative programming and tool designs, has led to the development of a production process that produces a double reverse-drawn, cylindrical shell that significantly exceeds traditional Limiting Drawing Ratios (LDR). The method used to produce these shells employs a recently developed technique, herein referred to as Tractive Kinematic Regression, or more simply, the TKR process. The TKR process promotes material flow by “feeding” material into the die cavity, as opposed to the punch having to “draw” or “pull” in the flange. This is accomplished through the use of concurrent - but unequal - force and motion curves of a forward moving punch and a regressing (reverse moving) die ring. The computer controlled kinematics, forces and motion curves resulted in less material straining and thereby, provided increased formability and improved LDR.

Applications of spindle integrated force sensors are examined where the cutting forces are reconstructed from the piezoelectric force sensors that are imbedded in the spindle housing. The reconstruction of the cutting forces using the disturbance Kalman filter effectively provides the high bandwidth sensor requirements. The three applications that are presented in this paper are Adaptive Control with Constraint (ACC), chatter detection, and tool breakage detection, all using the spindle integrated sensors. ACC provides effective means of increasing machining productivity through the adjustment of feed rates by constraining cutting forces. The detection of chatter vibration in machining operations is important in order to ensure quality surface finishes. The cutting forces measured from the spindle sensors provide sufficient information as to whether the cutting operations are stable or not. Tool breakage detection is performed using both a good tool and a damaged tool. Two residual indices based on the first order auto-regressive (AR) filter are examined to determine tool breakage. The experiments verify the successful monitoring strategies using the spindle integrated force sensors.

The paper presents an attempt to identify forces acting on the control unit of a helicopter model during flight. The helicopter model will, according to the project assumptions, operate as an inspection robot i.e. it will autonomously fly in selected regions and monitor them with an embedded camera. It could be used for visual inspection of high masts or chimneys. Autonomous flying requires a sophisticated control system. The control unit is placed in an additional box hung under the fuselage. One of the stages of the unit development was examination of in-flight forces acting on the box and if it was necessary, a vibroinsulation selection. For this reason, an experiment was conducted. During the test, forces in the box suspension and accelerations in selected locations of the object were recorded. Having both, forces and responses in the form of vibrations accelerations, enabled to verify a force identification procedure. It is a procedure based on regressive parametric models inversion. The paper presents this method’s description and an attempt to apply it to the described forces identification.

This paper quantifies statistical variations in model predicted machining forces while cutting aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel and titanium. An accurate estimate of the variability is essential for use in process planning to determine appropriate factors of safety when setting cutting conditions that are both safe and efficient. A linear regression is performed to estimate the coefficients of a tangential cutting force model. Density ellipses are used to define the confidence limits of the coefficients under varying spindle speeds and radial immersions. The locus of coefficients at the 95% confidence level is then used in a mechanistic force model to quantify the variability in the cutting force predictions. Forces calculated by the model were within 20% of the nominal predicted values for cases for aluminum, steel and stainless steel. The results were much worse for titanium because of a smaller sample size. Experimentally measured forces were within the error bounds predicted by the simulation.

This paper introduces a method to use the cutting force profile, measured from a Kistler dynamometer, to calibrate a mechanistic based force model containing four cutting coefficients. The undesirable effects of tool vibration and force sensor dynamics are minimized by carefully choosing experimental conditions. Cutting force profiles provide an array of force versus chip thickness based values that can be used in a regression fit to find the model coefficients. Results show that different ranges of chip thickness used in the calibration process result in slightly different cutting coefficients, which implies chip thickness has an effect on cutting coefficients. The force profile based cutting coefficients are then used in the cutting force model to estimate the peak resultant cutting force. Comparison of model estimates and measured values show less than 10% error.

The Labrador Sea formed during rifting between North America and Greenland beginning in the Early Cretaceous, with subsequent seafloor spreading from the Maastrichtian (chron C31) to Early Paleocene (chron C27n) that ended by chron C13 (earliest Oligocene). Early Cretaceous rifting resulted in accumulation of Alexis Formation basalt units and Bjarni Formation nonmarine and marginal marine clastic rocks. In the Late Cretaceous, extension focused further offshore as sag basin conditions formed across the shelf, with a basinwide transgression of Markland Formation shale and localized Freydis Member sandstone development. A Middle Paleocene to Early Eocene regression formed Gudrid Formation shoreline sandstone units, with correlative Cartwright Formation marine shale units. This was followed by an Early Eocene transgression of the Kenamu Formation and Middle Eocene Leif Member shoreline development. During the Late Eocene through Pleistocene, transgression took place once again at the base of the Mokami Formation, with subsequent development of the partly correlative shallow-marine sandstone units of the Saglek Formation.

Every day, three women are murdered in the United States by a current or former partner. Yet policy action to prevent gender-based violence has been limited. Previous studies have highlighted the effect of female political representation on crimes against women in the developing world. This paper investigates whether the election of a female politician reduces the incidence of gender-based violence in the United States. Using a regression discontinuity design on mixed-gender races, we find that the election of a female House Representative leads to a short-lived decline in the prevalence of femicides in her electoral district. The drop in femicides is mainly driven by a deterrence effect that results from higher police responsiveness and effort in solving gender-related crimes.

The Tinney Hills map area consists primarily of glacially and meltwater scoured bedrock, discontinuous till in the southwest and central-east, and postglacial marine sediments in coastal lowlands and along river valleys inland. The boundaries of many till deposits are cut to bedrock by widespread subglacial meltwater erosion. Ridged till in particular, is often associated with eskers and other glaciofluvial sediments and meltwater erosion. Striations and streamlined till landforms indicate regional ice flow towards the north-northwest and northwest, and later crosscutting relationships recording minor variations locally. Orientation of eskers and outwash plains suggest ice recession was primarily southeastward. Small, isolated glacial lakes formed where retreating or stagnant ice temporarily blocked local drainage. Below 200 to 220 m elevation, the region was inundated by the sea during ice retreat. Glaciomarine and marine sediments consist of littoral beach and offshore sediments, winnowed till surfaces, and isolated deltas. Isostatic rebound caused marine regression, recorded by deltas and beaches at 210 to 220 m elevation, and decreasing to current sea level.

We revisit an old question but with a new identification strategy, namely the difference in exchange rate effects between announced (“vocal”) and secret (“dirty”) foreign exchange intervention. Using a Regression Discontinuity Design, we exploit a rule-based intervention mechanism enacted by the Central Bank of Colombia that, under observable and deterministic conditions, triggered either the issuance of FX options or the ability to exercise them. We take the former (issuance) as central bank announcements under a sharp setting, since the rule and information that triggered the issuance of options was public, and we take the latter (exercise) as secret trades under a fuzzy setting, since traders could have chosen (but were not required) to exercise their options in the following days after issuance. Our results indicate that, unconditionally, both announcements and secret trades carry similar effects. However, the effects of announcements are considerably amplified conditional on: (i) higher central bank credibility, (ii) less frequent announcements, and (iii) episodes of higher FX volatility.

When individuals decide to retire from the labour force, different sources of income can help to maintain consumption and welfare. One of those is public pensions. Their importance as an income source varies greatly according to socio-economic status (SES). This paper analyzes how replacement rates (RR) of public pensions (OAS and GIS) and mandatory public pension benefits (C/QPP) vary across SES by using the Longitudinal and International Study of Adults dataset (LISA). Using the longitudinal nature of this survey, we compute and compare average RRs by SES. We specifically consider the role of education and health, and we study how living arrangements can explain RRs variations. To give an idea the average RR of public pensions for individuals in bad health is 32%, while it is 21% for those who report being in good health. Including public pensions and C/QPP benefits, these numbers become 54% for those in bad health and 41% for those in good health. When estimating a multivariate regression model and controlling for past income, we find for couples, that past income does not eliminate differences in replacement ratio by individuals’ characteristics. We argue that assortative mating plays a role in explaining the variation of replacement rates across individuals’ characteristics.

This research report describes a methodology whereby multi-spectral and hyperspectral imagery from remote sensing, is used for deriving predicted field maps of selected plant growth attributes which are required for precision cropping. A major task in precision cropping is to establish areas of the field that differ from the rest of the field and share a common characteristic. Yield distribution f maps can be prepared by yield monitors, which are available for some harvester types. Other field attributes of interest in precision cropping, e.g. soil properties, leaf Nitrate, biomass etc. are obtained by manual sampling of the filed in a grid pattern. Maps of various field attributes are then prepared from these samples by the "Inverse Distance" interpolation method or by Kriging. An improved interpolation method was developed which is based on minimizing the overall curvature of the resulting map. Such maps are the ground truth reference, used for training the algorithm that generates the predicted field maps from remote sensing imagery. Both the reference and the predicted maps are stratified into "Prototype Plots", e.g. 15xl5 blocks of 2m pixels whereby the block size is 30x30m. This averaging reduces the datasets to manageable size and significantly improves the typically poor repeatability of remote sensing imaging systems. In the first two years of the project we used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), for generating predicted yield maps of sugar beets and com. The NDVI was computed from image cubes of three spectral bands, generated by an optically filtered three camera video imaging system. A two dimensional FFT based regression model Y=f(X), was used wherein Y was the reference map and X=NDVI was the predictor. The FFT regression method applies the "Wavelet Based", "Pixel Block" and "Image Rotation" transforms to the reference and remote images, prior to the Fast - Fourier Transform (FFT) Regression method with the "Phase Lock" option. A complex domain based map Yfft is derived by least squares minimization between the amplitude matrices of X and Y, via the 2D FFT. For one time predictions, the phase matrix of Y is combined with the amplitude matrix ofYfft, whereby an improved predicted map Yplock is formed. Usually, the residuals of Y plock versus Y are about half of the values of Yfft versus Y. For long term predictions, the phase matrix of a "field mask" is combined with the amplitude matrices of the reference image Y and the predicted image Yfft. The field mask is a binary image of a pre-selected region of interest in X and Y. The resultant maps Ypref and Ypred aremodified versions of Y and Yfft respectively. The residuals of Ypred versus Ypref are even lower than the residuals of Yplock versus Y. The maps, Ypref and Ypred represent a close consensus of two independent imaging methods which "view" the same target. In the last two years of the project our remote sensing capability was expanded by addition of a CASI II airborne hyperspectral imaging system and an ASD hyperspectral radiometer. Unfortunately, the cross-noice and poor repeatability problem we had in multi-spectral imaging was exasperated in hyperspectral imaging. We have been able to overcome this problem by over-flying each field twice in rapid succession and developing the Repeatability Index (RI). The RI quantifies the repeatability of each spectral band in the hyperspectral image cube. Thereby, it is possible to select the bands of higher repeatability for inclusion in the prediction model while bands of low repeatability are excluded. Further segregation of high and low repeatability bands takes place in the prediction model algorithm, which is based on a combination of a "Genetic Algorithm" and Partial Least Squares", (PLS-GA). In summary, modus operandi was developed, for deriving important plant growth attribute maps (yield, leaf nitrate, biomass and sugar percent in beets), from remote sensing imagery, with sufficient accuracy for precision cropping applications. This achievement is remarkable, given the inherently high cross-noice between the reference and remote imagery as well as the highly non-repeatable nature of remote sensing systems. The above methodologies may be readily adopted by commercial companies, which specialize in proving remotely sensed data to farmers.

The objectives of this project were to develop nondestructive methods for detection of internal properties and firmness of fruits and vegetables. One method was based on a soft piezoelectric film transducer developed in the Technion, for analysis of fruit response to low-energy excitation. The second method was a dot-matrix piezoelectric transducer of North Carolina State University, developed for contact-pressure analysis of fruit during impact. Two research teams, one in Israel and the other in North Carolina, coordinated their research effort according to the specific objectives of the project, to develop and apply the two complementary methods for quality control of agricultural commodities. In Israel: An improved firmness testing system was developed and tested with tropical fruits. The new system included an instrumented fruit-bed of three flexible piezoelectric sensors and miniature electromagnetic hammers, which served as fruit support and low-energy excitation device, respectively. Resonant frequencies were detected for determination of firmness index. Two new acoustic parameters were developed for evaluation of fruit firmness and maturity: a dumping-ratio and a centeroid of the frequency response. Experiments were performed with avocado and mango fruits. The internal damping ratio, which may indicate fruit ripeness, increased monotonically with time, while resonant frequencies and firmness indices decreased with time. Fruit samples were tested daily by destructive penetration test. A fairy high correlation was found in tropical fruits between the penetration force and the new acoustic parameters; a lower correlation was found between this parameter and the conventional firmness index. Improved table-top firmness testing units, Firmalon, with data-logging system and on-line data analysis capacity have been built. The new device was used for the full-scale experiments in the next two years, ahead of the original program and BARD timetable. Close cooperation was initiated with local industry for development of both off-line and on-line sorting and quality control of more agricultural commodities. Firmalon units were produced and operated in major packaging houses in Israel, Belgium and Washington State, on mango and avocado, apples, pears, tomatoes, melons and some other fruits, to gain field experience with the new method. The accumulated experimental data from all these activities is still analyzed, to improve firmness sorting criteria and shelf-life predicting curves for the different fruits. The test program in commercial CA storage facilities in Washington State included seven apple varieties: Fuji, Braeburn, Gala, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and D'Anjou pear variety. FI master-curves could be developed for the Braeburn, Gala, Granny Smith and Jonagold apples. These fruits showed a steady ripening process during the test period. Yet, more work should be conducted to reduce scattering of the data and to determine the confidence limits of the method. Nearly constant FI in Red Delicious and the fluctuations of FI in the Fuji apples should be re-examined. Three sets of experiment were performed with Flandria tomatoes. Despite the complex structure of the tomatoes, the acoustic method could be used for firmness evaluation and to follow the ripening evolution with time. Close agreement was achieved between the auction expert evaluation and that of the nondestructive acoustic test, where firmness index of 4.0 and more indicated grade-A tomatoes. More work is performed to refine the sorting algorithm and to develop a general ripening scale for automatic grading of tomatoes for the fresh fruit market. Galia melons were tested in Israel, in simulated export conditions. It was concluded that the Firmalon is capable of detecting the ripening of melons nondestructively, and sorted out the defective fruits from the export shipment. The cooperation with local industry resulted in development of automatic on-line prototype of the acoustic sensor, that may be incorporated with the export quality control system for melons. More interesting is the development of the remote firmness sensing method for sealed CA cool-rooms, where most of the full-year fruit yield in stored for off-season consumption. Hundreds of ripening monitor systems have been installed in major fruit storage facilities, and being evaluated now by the consumers. If successful, the new method may cause a major change in long-term fruit storage technology. More uses of the acoustic test method have been considered, for monitoring fruit maturity and harvest time, testing fruit samples or each individual fruit when entering the storage facilities, packaging house and auction, and in the supermarket. This approach may result in a full line of equipment for nondestructive quality control of fruits and vegetables, from the orchard or the greenhouse, through the entire sorting, grading and storage process, up to the consumer table. The developed technology offers a tool to determine the maturity of the fruits nondestructively by monitoring their acoustic response to mechanical impulse on the tree. A special device was built and preliminary tested in mango fruit. More development is needed to develop a portable, hand operated sensing method for this purpose. In North Carolina: Analysis method based on an Auto-Regressive (AR) model was developed for detecting the first resonance of fruit from their response to mechanical impulse. The algorithm included a routine that detects the first resonant frequency from as many sensors as possible. Experiments on Red Delicious apples were performed and their firmness was determined. The AR method allowed the detection of the first resonance. The method could be fast enough to be utilized in a real time sorting machine. Yet, further study is needed to look for improvement of the search algorithm of the methods. An impact contact-pressure measurement system and Neural Network (NN) identification method were developed to investigate the relationships between surface pressure distributions on selected fruits and their respective internal textural qualities. A piezoelectric dot-matrix pressure transducer was developed for the purpose of acquiring time-sampled pressure profiles during impact. The acquired data was transferred into a personal computer and accurate visualization of animated data were presented. Preliminary test with 10 apples has been performed. Measurement were made by the contact-pressure transducer in two different positions. Complementary measurements were made on the same apples by using the Firmalon and Magness Taylor (MT) testers. Three-layer neural network was designed. 2/3 of the contact-pressure data were used as training input data and corresponding MT data as training target data. The remaining data were used as NN checking data. Six samples randomly chosen from the ten measured samples and their corresponding Firmalon values were used as the NN training and target data, respectively. The remaining four samples' data were input to the NN. The NN results consistent with the Firmness Tester values. So, if more training data would be obtained, the output should be more accurate. In addition, the Firmness Tester values do not consistent with MT firmness tester values. The NN method developed in this study appears to be a useful tool to emulate the MT Firmness test results without destroying the apple samples. To get more accurate estimation of MT firmness a much larger training data set is required. When the larger sensitive area of the pressure sensor being developed in this project becomes available, the entire contact 'shape' will provide additional information and the neural network results would be more accurate. This paper proposed a surrogate model to simplify the process of estimating the axial compressive capacity of cold-formed steel (CFS) open built-up sections composed of lipped channels with different section sizes, thickness, length, and connector spacing. The surrogate model was developed based on the current design methods, i.e., the Effective Width Method (EWM) and Direct Strength Method (DSM), which are codified in the North American Specification AISI S100-16. This new model features two surface regression equations with a boundary inequality criteria, anchored on two important parameters, i.e., modified slenderness ratio, (KL/r)m and minimum thickness-to-width ratio (t/w)min of the built-up sections. The model was validated with 1089 sets of the experimental results data collected from previous research tested on the axial capacity of CFS open built-up sections with the different design configurations. The proposed surrogate model is aimed to simplify the design process among practising engineers for a quick preliminary calculation of the axial compressive capacity of these new CFS open built-up sections.
