For fixed l≥0 and m≥1, let Xn0, Xn1,..., Xnl be independent random n × n matrices with independent entries, let Fn0 := Xn0, Xn1-1,..., Xnl-1, and let Fn1,..., Fnm be independent random matrices of the same form as Fn0 . We show that as n → ∞, the matrices Fn0 and m−l+1/2Fn1 +...+ Fnm have the same limiting eigenvalue distribution. To obtain our results, we apply the general framework recently introduced in Götze, Kösters, and Tikhomirov 2015 to sums of products of independent random matrices and their inverses.We establish the universality of the limiting singular value and eigenvalue distributions, and we provide a closer description of the limiting distributions in terms of free probability theory.

Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (FNM) has been widely accepted as an adjunct during parotid surgery to facilitate identification of the facial nerve (FN) main trunk, dissection of FN branches, confirmation of FN function integrity, detection of FN injury and prognostication of facial expression after tumor resection. Although the use of FNM in parotidectomy is increasing, little uniformity exists in its application from the literature. Thus, not only are the results of many studies difficult to compare but the value of FNM technology is also limited. The article reviews the current literature and proposes our standardized FNM procedures during parotid surgery, such as standards in FNM setup, standards in general anesthesia, standards in FNM procedures and application of stimulus currents, interpretation of electrophysiologic signals and prediction of the facial expression outcome and pre-/post-operative assessment of facial expressions. We hope that the FNM standardized procedures will provide greater uniformity, improve the quality of applications and contribute to future research.

In this paper we study the relations among the dynamics of the mappings f, fn, and fnm and we answer some questions, by F. Barragán, A. Santiago-Santos and J. Tenorio, related to the properties: minimality, irreducibility, strong transitive and turbulence.

Frontonasal malformation (FNM) is a developmental field defect representing abnormal morphogenesis of the frontonasal eminence. The oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS) has been used to describe a broader range of first and second branchial-arch defects including hemifacial microsomia and Goldenhar's syndrome. A combination of FNM and OAVS has been described in the literature in 13 cases. This condition has been labeled as the oculoauriculofrontonasal syndrome, as well as ophthalmofrontonasal dysplasia. We have evaluated four patients with both FNM and OAVS. The pattern of malformation involves only the craniofacies: they have no vertebral defects, heart disease, or encephaloceles. The categorization of these four individuals and those in the literature raises interesting issues regarding syndrome classification. Originally, it was suggested that perhaps this disorder was a variation of Goldenhar's syndrome. However, now that it has become evident that FNM and OAVS are malformation patterns of etiologic and presumably pathogenetic heterogeneity, a more likely hypothesis is that when these two defects occur together, this represents a unique syndrome pattern. The purpose of this article is to suggest that the combination of OAVS and FNM may be a distinct entity, representing a discreet subset of patients.

The fuzzy non-metric model (FNM) is a representative non-hierarchical clustering method, which is very useful because the belongingness or the membership degree of each datum to each cluster can be calculated directly from the dissimilarities between data and the cluster centers are not used. However, the original FNM cannot handle data with uncertainty. In this study, we refer to the data with uncertainty as “uncertain data,” e.g., incomplete data or data that have errors. Previously, a methods was proposed based on the concept of a tolerance vector for handling uncertain data and some clustering methods were constructed according to this concept, e.g. fuzzyc-means for data with tolerance. These methods can handle uncertain data in the framework of optimization. Thus, in the present study, we apply the concept to FNM. First, we propose a new clustering algorithm based on FNM using the concept of tolerance, which we refer to as the fuzzy non-metric model for data with tolerance. Second, we show that the proposed algorithm can handle incomplete data sets. Third, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm based on comparisons with conventional methods for incomplete data sets in some numerical examples.

The interaction between bacteria and fibronectin is believed to play an important role in the pathogenicity of clinically important Gram-positive cocci. In the present study, we identified a gene encoding a predictedfibronectin-binding protein ofEnterococcus faecium(fnm), a homologue ofStreptococcus pneumoniae pavA, in the genomes ofE. faeciumstrain TX82 and all other sequencedE. faeciumisolates. Full-length recombinant Fnm from strain TX82 bound to immobilized fibronectin in a concentration-dependent manner and also appeared to bind collagen type V and laminin, but not other proteins, such as transferrin, heparin, bovine serum albumin, mucin, or collagen IV. We demonstrated that the N-terminal fragment of Fnm is required for full fibronectin binding, since truncation of this region caused a 2.4-fold decrease (P< 0.05) in the adhesion ofE. faeciumTX82 to fibronectin. Deletion offnmresulted in a significant reduction (P< 0.001) in the ability of the mutant, TX6128, to bind fibronectin relative to that of the wild-type strain;in situreconstitution offnmin the deletion mutant strain restored adherence. In addition, the Δfnmmutant was highly attenuated relative to TX82 (P≤ 0.0001) in a mixed-inoculum rat endocarditis model. Taken together, these results demonstrate that Fnm affects the adherence ofE. faeciumto fibronectin and is important in the pathogenesis of experimental endocarditis.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o potencial e a estrutura florestal de uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa de terra firme, da Comunidade São Mateus, município de Placas, Pará. A avaliação foi realizada em dois tipos de ambiente, sendo, um, em Floresta Manejada (FM) e, outro, em Floresta Não Manejada (FNM). Foram alocadas 20 unidades amostrais, sendo nove em FM e 11 em FNM. Em cada unidade amostral, os indivíduos foram inventariados em três classes de tamanho (CT): CT1 - 10 cm < DAP < 30 cm (subparcelas de 50 m x 25 m); CT2 - 30 cm < DAP < 50 cm (50 m x 50 m); e CT3 - DAP > 50 cm (50 m x 200 m). As formas de utilização de todas as espécies arbóreas registradas foram verificadas por meio de entrevistas com assentados, no comércio, nas feiras livres e no mercado municipal de Santarém. Foram amostrados 472,6 árvores/ha na FM, distribuídas em 134 espécies e, na FNM, 508,0 árvores/ha, distribuídas em 146 espécies. As espécies de maior valor de importância nos dois tipos florestais foram: Licania kunthianamm Hook. f. (Chrysobalanaceae) e Mezilaurus itauba Taubert ex Mez (Lauraceae). As espécies que mais se destacaram com diferentes possibilidades de uso foram: Protium cf. heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand (Burseraceae), Hymenaea courbaril L. (Fabaceae) e Caryocar villosum (Aubl.) Pers (Caryocaraceae). Após quatro anos de colheitas, não ocorreu diferenciação estrutural entre FM e FNM.

The development of sustainable extraction methods to obtain natural products constitutes a challenge for the food industry. The aim of this work was to compare yield, separation efficiency, chemical composition, and physicochemical properties of the mucilage extracted from fresh cladodes (FNM) and mucilage extracted from dehydrated cladodes (DNM) of O. ficus indica. Suspensions of fresh and dehydrated cladodes (4% w/w) were prepared for mucilage extraction by using a mechanical separation process. Subsequently, the separated mucilage was precipitated with ethyl alcohol (1:2 v/v) then, yield and separation efficiency were determined. The mucilage was characterized by measuring Z potential, viscosity, color, and texture attributes. Additionally, chemical proximate analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted. No significant differences (p < 0.05) were detected in the yield and separation efficiencies between samples. Nevertheless, the dehydration process of cladodes prior to mucilage extraction increased protein, ashes, nitrogen free extract, and calcium content. The viscosity was higher in DNM than in FNM. The TGA revealed a different thermal behavior between samples. In addition, the DNM showed lower L (darkness/lightness), cohesiveness, adhesiveness, and springiness values than those of FNM. These results support that differences found between the chemical and physicochemical properties of DNM and those of FNM will determine the applications of the mucilage obtained from the O. ficus indica cladodes in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Objective This study assesses the role of facial nerve monitoring (FNM) for intraoperative decision making during otologic surgery and possible benefits beyond protecting facial nerve integrity. Study Design This prospective study examines intraoperative FNM data and structured interviews collected during 52 otologic procedures. Setting Tertiary referral center. Subjects and Methods Subjects include adults and children undergoing middle ear or mastoid surgery. Data include intraoperative neuromonitoring activity and structured interviews conducted with the operating surgeon immediately following surgery. Results Facial nerve stimulation was used to confirm the position of the nerve in 42 of 52 surgical procedures. In 26.9% of cases, the patient became “light” and moved under anesthesia, which was predicted by neuromonitoring 71.4% of the time. Through structured interviews, the operating surgeons reported the following. (1) The facial nerve took an unexpected anatomic course in 7.8% of patients and was difficult to identify in 39.2%. (2) The nerve was at increased risk of injury in 66.7% of cases due to chronic disease or previous surgery. (3) Among these high-risk cases, the monitor helped reduce the risk of nerve damage 100% of the time. (4) Neuromonitoring allowed the surgeon to operate faster 86.5% of the time, and (5) FNM allowed the resident to perform more of the operation 68.9% of the time. No patients experienced postoperative facial weakness. Conclusions Beyond potentially protecting facial nerve integrity, this study identified additional benefits of FNM, including warning of patient movement during anesthesia, confirming facial nerve anatomic location, reducing operative time, and enhancing resident surgical experience.

This observational study investigated intraoperative electrophysiological changes and their correlation with postoperative facial expressions in parotidectomy patients with visual confirmation of facial nerve (FN) continuity. Maximal electromyography(EMG) amplitudes of the facial muscles corresponding to temporal, zygomatic, buccal and mandibular branches were compared before/after FN dissection, and facial function at four facial regions were evaluated before/after parotidectomy in 112 patients. Comparisons of 448 pairs of EMG signals revealed at least one signal decrease after FN dissection in 75 (67%) patients. Regional facial weakness was only found in 13 of 16 signals with >50% amplitude decreases. All facial dysfunctions completely recovered within 6 months. EMG amplitude decreases often occur after FN dissection. An amplitude decrease >50% in an FN branch is associated with a high incidence of dysfunction in the corresponding facial region. This study tries to establish a standard facial nerve monitoring (FNM) procedure and a proper facial function grading system for parotid surgery that will be useful for the future study of FNM in parotid surgery.

O processo de reconhecimento biométrico da íris é uma das tecnologias biométricas mais consistentes entre outras disponíveis atualmente. No entanto, sua eficiência e precisão podem ser afetadas por imagens de íris de baixa qualidade usadas como entrada para um sistema de reconhecimento, assim, o desempenho global é reduzido. Nesse contexto, este trabalho propõe um estudo de avaliação para determinar o impacto da qualidade da imagem da íris no desempenho do sistema biométrico da íris, utilizando as principais métricas apresentadas na norma ISO / IEC 29794-6: 2015. Os testes experimentais são realizados usando um banco de dados de imagens de íris e o software de reconhecimento biométrico OSIRIS, ambos amplamente aceitos e referenciados nas últimas pesquisas. Os resultados experimentais mostram os valores de intervalo de cada métrica de qualidade e o número de imagens que atingem os valores mínimos necessários. O desempenho do sistema biométrico é avaliado pelos parâmetros True-Match (TM) e False Non-Match (FNM); assim, foi possível identificar que quanto maior o nível de qualidade da imagem, menor o valor de FNM; portanto, o desempenho do sistema é aprimorado.

Abstract To exploit the B-lymphocyte antigen-CD20 binding capa­city of the Ibritumomab tiuxetan (IBTN) monoclonal antibody (mAb) for imaging, the over-expression of B cells in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) (a myeloproliferative disorder of the lymphatic system) was investigated. In the current investigation, we present the labeling of the IBTN with technetium-99m (99mTc) through [99mTc(CO)3]+ precursor for radioimmunoimaging (RII) of the tumor prior to its treatment with 90Y labeled IBTN. Labeled IBTN was radiobiologically characterized in terms of radiochemical purity, in vitro stability in human plasma, immunoreactivity, binding with Raji and Ramos cells and biodistribution in a female nude mouse (FNM) model. It was observed that the reduced IBTN (rIBTN) showed more promising radiobiologic characteristics than the nonreduced IBTN. Significantly higher transchelation was seen in excess cysteine compared with histidine. The radioconjugate showed higher saturated binding affinity with CD20 antigen. Significantly higher target (tumor) to background ratios were observed 1 h post-injection (p.i.). Based on radiochemical purity, in vitro stability, immunoreactivity, binding and biodistrubtion in the FNM model, we recommend the radiolabeling of the rIBTN using tricarbonyl technique as a potential RII agent.

AbstractReactive molecular additives have often been employed to tailor the mechanical properties of epoxy resins. In addition, several studies have reported improved electrical properties in such systems, where the network architecture and included function groups have been modified through the use of so-called functional network modifier (FNM) molecules. The study reported here set out to investigate the effect of a glycidyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GPOSS) FNM on the cross-linking reactions, glass transition, breakdown strength and dielectric properties of an amine-cured epoxy resin system. Since many previous studies have considered POSS to act as an inorganic filler, a key aim was to consider the impact of GPOSS addition on the stoichiometry of curing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed significant changes in the cross-linking reactions that occur if appropriate stoichiometric compensation is not made for the additional epoxide groups present on the GPOSS. These changes, in concert with the direct effect of the GPOSS itself, influence the glass transition temperature, dielectric breakdown behaviour and dielectric response of the system. Specifically, the work shows that the inclusion of GPOSS can result in beneficial changes in electrical properties, but that these gains are easily lost if consequential changes in the matrix polymer are not appropriately counteracted. Nevertheless, if the system is appropriately optimized, materials with pronounced improvements in technologically important characteristics can be designed.

Con la finalidad de identificar las variaciones del diámetro de fibra en el tipo de medulación en alpacas Huacaya procedentes del Centro Experimental La Raya, Puno; se colectaron 6 g de fibra del lado izquierdo del costillar medio de 190 alpacas, considerando el factor sexo (machos: 89; hembras: 109) y grupo etario (I: 1-2; II: 3-4; III: 5-6; IV: 7-8; V: 9-10 años). Las variables consideradas incluyeron fibras no meduladas, con medula fragmentada, medula continua, medula discontinua y fuertemente meduladas con sus respectivos porcentajes. Las fibras fueron analizadas utilizando el equipo FIBER MED y la evaluación de los porcentajes fue previa transformación angular Bliss a valores enteros arcoseno. Se utilizó un arreglo factorial 2x5 bajo un diseño completamente al azar. Asimismo, se determinó la correlación de Spearman. El diámetro medio de fibra (DMF) se incrementó con la edad (p<0.05). El porcentaje total de fibras meduladas (TFM) aumentó de 34.79% en el grupo de 1-2 años a 74.72% a los 9-10 años (p<0.05) y el porcentaje de fibras no meduladas (FNM) disminuyó de 65.69% a 25.60% (p<0.05). Las correlaciones más resaltantes fueron entre porcentaje TFM y DMF (r=0.883) y el porcentaje FNM y DMF (r=-0.883). Se concluye que en alpacas Huacaya el diámetro de fibras meduladas es superior a las fibras sin médula, en tanto que los porcentajes de fibras meduladas son superiores a las fibras sin médula.

The influence of the helical grooved path in the pipe was studied in the fully developed region of the pipe in this study. In fact, the applicable depth and pitch ratios minimize the cost and the production time of the manufacturing process. The Finite Volume Method (FNM) has been used with RNG k-ε turbulent model in this study. Heat and fluid flow in a pipe with a diameter of 0.25 m and a length of 5 m have been simulated. The improvement area starts after 3 meters, which represents to fully developed region, as examined and confirmed. The results showed that the efficiency improved by 5.8% compared to the plain pipe.

The Mexican filmmaker Francisco del Villar (1920‐78) was hired by different government institutions such as the Ministry of Health and Assistance (SSA), National Railways (FNM), Petróleos Mexicanos (PM) and the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) to make documentaries on their work for propaganda and educational purposes. Between 1957 and 1972 del Villar filmed at least thirteen documentaries that represent the development of these institutions and their achievements, but also, the work of the Mexican state more broadly. This article rescues this documentary production from anonymity and analyses the political and social contexts of the period in which they were filmed, as well as the institutions’ various agendas. This article also seeks to contribute to the historiography of Mexican documentary in the second half of the twentieth century by analysing its representation of medical-sanitary issues and of technological modernity in 1960s Mexico.

In order to contribute to clinical delineation of midline facial defects with hypertelorism (MFDH) and to etiologic diagnosis of the isolated form, 31 patients with MFDH unaffected by known syndromic associations were evaluated. Group A included patients personally examined by the authors, while Group B included those previously evaluated by other geneticists. Among the 14 patients from Group A, there were 7 with distinct pictures of multiple congenital anomalies. In Group B, 5 of the 17 patients also exhibited a distinct pattern of defects. Among isolated MFDH, there was association with anomalies of the skull and facial bones (13/14), otorhinologic (11/16), central nervous system (9/16), and ocular (6/7), and audiologic (3/16); 1/3 of the cases had a relevant gestational intercurrences. Isolated FNM may have involvement of environmental components in some cases; the possibility of a syndromic picture should be extensive investigated. Follow-up of such patients must include the examinations herein performed.

Evidence comparing ultrasound endoscopy-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) with EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in deep-seated lymphoma tissue sampling is insufficient. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of immunohistochemistry (IHC) or flow cytometry (FCM) on specimens obtained from EUS-FNB and EUS-FNA in the diagnosis and staging of deep-seated lymphomas. This real-world, dual-center study prospectively evaluated all eligible specimens from patients who underwent EUS-FNB/FNA over an 8-year period. 53 patients were enrolled, with 23 patients in the EUS-FNB group and 30 patients in the EUS-FNA group. FNB yielded specimens with longer core tissues (0.80 mm [0.55, 1.00] vs. 0.45 mm [0.30, 0.50], p = 0.009) and higher scores of specimen adequacy [4 (3.75, 4.00) vs. 3 (1.00, 4.00), p = 0.025]. Overall analysis revealed that the diagnostic accuracy of IHC based on specimens acquired from EUS-FNB was significantly higher than that of EUS-FNA (91.30% vs. 60.00%, p = 0.013). After controlling confounding factors including lesion size and endoscopists, EUS-FNB with IHC maintained a higher-level diagnostic accuracy compared to EUS-FNA (OR = 1.292 [1.037–1.609], p = 0.023). When FCM was additionally used to analyze the specimen acquired from EUS-FNA, the diagnostic yield was significantly improved (ROC AUC: 0.733 vs. 0.550, p = 0.015), and the AUC of FNB alone or combined with FCM was 0.739 and 0.761. Conclusions: FNB needles generate higher histopathological diagnostic accuracy and specimen quality than FNA for the deep-seated lymphoma. Though the application of FCM significantly improves the diagnostic efficacy of EUS-FNA, FNB was still the preferred diagnostic modality with a shorter procedure time, comparable diagnostic accuracy, and better cost-effectiveness.

A range of modified amine- and anhydride-cured epoxy systems based upon diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was produced, through the systematic incorporation of moieties termed functional network modifiers (FNMs) that serve to change the network structure in controlled ways. Here, the chosen FNM was trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TTE). The resulting materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, dielectric spectroscopy and measurements of direct current conduction. A progressive reduction in the glass transition temperature of the modified samples was seen with increasing TTE, which is interpreted in terms of changes in the network architecture of the resin. The molecular origins of the dielectric and relaxation processes are proposed. The observed increase in conduction seen exclusively with increasing TTE content in the amine-cured systems is considered in terms of the chemistry of the FNMs, variations in free volume, changes in molecular dynamics and residual unreacted groups retained from the curing reaction. Specifically, we relate the observed increase in conduction to the presence of unreacted amine groups.

The development of the female gametophyte (FG) is one of the key processes of life cycle alteration between the haploid gametophyte and the diploid sporophytes in plants and it is required for successful seed development after fertilization. It is well demonstrated that free nuclear mitosis (FNM) of FG is crucial for the development of the ovule. However, studies of the molecular mechanism of ovule and FG development focused mainly on angiosperms, such as Arabidopsis thaliana and further investigation of gymnosperms remains to be completed. Here, Illumina sequencing of six transcriptomic libraries obtained from developing and abortive ovules at different stages during free nuclear mitosis of magagametophyte (FNMM) was used to acquire transcriptome data and gene expression profiles of Pinus tabulaeformis. Six cDNA libraries generated a total of 71.0 million high-quality clean reads that aligned with 63,449 unigenes and the comparison between developing and abortive ovules identified 7174 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). From the functional annotation results, DEGs involved in the cell cycle and phytohormone regulation were highlighted to reveal their biological importance in ovule development. Furthermore, validation of DEGs from the phytohormone signal transduction pathway was performed using quantitative real-time PCR analysis, revealing the dynamics of transcriptional networks and potential key components in the regulation of FG development in P. tabulaeformis were identified. These findings provide new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of ovule development in woody gymnosperms.

AbstractThe present study was performed to find out how dairy cow behaviour and the level of the adrenocortical hormone cortisol were influenced by feeding in relation to milking The experiment was designed as a Latin square and performed on 24 primiparous and multiparous Swedish Red and White dairy cows. Each treatment period lasted for 21 days, including 11 days when the cows became accustomed to the new routines. The cows were exposed to three treatments: feeding 1·5 h before milking (FBM), feeding exactly at the same time as milking (FDM) and feeding 1·5 h after milking (FAM). Recordings of individual behaviour were made with instantaneous direct observation of each cow. For the statistical analyses the recordings were divided into two groups: 0 to 1·5 h after feeding and 0 to 1·5 h after milking. Results with a P-value below 0·05 were regarded as statistically significant. The interesting findings in this study were: (a) 0 to 1·5 h after feeding, the percentage of lying was higher in FDM and the percentage of lying while ruminating was higher in FDM; (b) 0 to 1·5 h after milking, the cows in FAM had a significantly lower percentage of social interactions and a significantly higher percentage of oral activity; and (c) feeding-related level of cortisol stayed higher 30 to 60 min after feeding in FAM compared with FBM and FDM, whereas milking-related cortisol secretion tended to be lower in FDM than in FBM and FAM These results demonstrate that feeding during milking may be an important management routine, also for dairy cow behaviour.

The purposes of this research were to investigate the synthesized Nylon-6 nanofibers using electrospinning technique and their characteristics. The method used in this study was an experimental method with a quantitative approach. Nylon-6 nanofibers have been produced using the electrospinning method. This fiber was made with different concentrations, i.e. 20% w/w (FN1), 25% w/w (FN2), and 30% w/w (FN3). The SEM results show that the morphology of all nylon-6 nanofibers) forms perfect fibers without bead fiber. Increasing fiber concentration from 20% w/w to 30% w/w results in bigger morphology and fiber diameter. The dimensions of the FN1, FN2, and FN3 fibers are 1890 nm, 2350 nm, and 2420 nm, respectively. The results of FTIR analysis showed that the increase in the concentration of nylon-6 (b) and the electrospinning process caused a peak shift in the amide II group (CH2 bond), the carbonyl group and the CH2 stretching of the amide III group from small wave numbers to larger ones. The results of XRD characterization showed that the electrospinning process affected the changes in the XRD pattern of nylon-6 nanofiber (FN1, FN2, and FN3) in the state of semi crystal. Nylon-6 nanofibers can be used for applications in medicine, air filters, and electrode for capacitors

Collagen α1 type XX, which contains fibronectin type III (FN3) repeats involving six FN3 domains (referred to as the FN#1–FN#6 domains), is an unusual member of the fibril-associated collagens with interrupted triple helices (FACIT) subfamily of collagens. The results of standard protein BLAST suggest that the FN3 repeats might contribute to collagen α1 type XX acting as a cytokine receptor. To date, solution NMR structures of the FN#3, FN#4 and FN#6 domains have been determined. To obtain further structural evidence to understand the relationship between the structure and function of the FN3 repeats from collagen α1 type XX, the crystal structure of the FN#2 domain from human collagen α1 type XX (residues Pro386–Pro466; referred to as FN2-HCXX) was solved at 2.5 Å resolution. The crystal structure of FN2-HCXX shows an immunoglobulin-like fold containing a β-sandwich structure, which is formed by a three-stranded β-sheet (β1, β2 and β5) packed onto a four-stranded β-sheet (β3, β4, β6 and β7). Two consensus domains, tencon and fibcon, are structural analogues of FN2-HCXX. Fn8, an FN3 domain from human oncofoetal fibronectin, is the closest structural analogue of FN2-HCXX derived from a naturally occurring sequence. Based solely on the structural similarity of FN2-HCXX to other FN3 domains, the detailed functions of FN2-HCXX and the FN3 repeats in collagen α1 type XX cannot be identified.

Ovule abortion is a common phenomenon in plants that has an impact on seed production. Previous studies of ovule and female gametophyte (FG) development have mainly focused on angiosperms, especially in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, because it is difficult to acquire information about ovule development in gymnosperms, this remains unclear. Here, we investigated the transcriptomic data of natural ovule abortion mutants (female sterile line, STE) and the wild type (female fertile line, FER) of Pinus tabuliformis Carr. to evaluate the mechanism of ovule abortion during the process of free nuclear mitosis (FNM). Using single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS), 18 cDNA libraries via Illumina and two normalized libraries via PacBio, with a total of almost 400,000 reads, were obtained. Our analysis showed that the numbers of isoforms and alternative splicing (AS) patterns were significantly variable between FER and STE. The functional annotation results demonstrate that genes involved in the auxin response, energy metabolism, signal transduction, cell division, and stress response were differentially expressed in different lines. In particular, AUX/IAA, ARF2, SUS, and CYCB had significantly lower expression in STE, showing that auxin might be insufficient in STE, thus hindering nuclear division and influencing metabolism. Apoptosis in STE might also have affected the expression levels of these genes. To confirm the transcriptomic analysis results, nine pairs were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR. Taken together, these results provide new insights into ovule abortion in gymnosperms and further reveal the regulatory mechanisms of ovule development.

Existen argumentos a favor de la reducción de la incidencia de medulación, a fin de realizar la mejora de las fibras desde el punto de vista de la producción y procesamiento textil, por lo que se requiere reforzar el conocimiento en torno a esta característica. Por tanto, el presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar la incidencia y relación entre los tipos de medulación, así como determinar su relación con la finura en fibras de ovino, alpaca, llama, paco-vicuña y conejo Angora. Se tomaron muestras de lana y fibra (n=15 por especie animal) y adicionalmente 140 muestras de alpacas tuis macho de color blanco. Se determinó la media del diámetro de fibra (MDF) y los porcentajes de fibras meduladas (%FM) y no meduladas (%FNM), y en esta última se determinaron los porcentajes de fibras de medulación fragmentada, discontinua, continua y fuertemente medulada o tipo kemp. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que las fibras de lana Merino presentaron pocas fibras meduladas, ocurriendo lo contrario en fibras de conejo Angora, mientras que las fibras de alpacas tuis, llamas y paco-vicuñas tuvieron porcentajes de medulación moderados (22-40%), encontrándose médulas aún en fibras muy finas. Se determinó una relación directa entre la MDF y el %FM en todos los tipos de fibras, a excepción de la lana de ovino. Se concluye que el %FM es una característica que debería disminuirse en llamas y alpacas y, por tanto, debiera ser considerado como criterio de selección en los programas de mejoramiento genético, pero solo en torno a reducir drásticamente la incidencia de fibras fuertemente meduladas.

Feeding during milking has been shown to influence milk production, milk flow and milking time as well as the secretion of the pituitary hormones oxytocin and prolactin, and the gastrointestinal hormone somatostatin. However, it is not known whether feeding before or after milking has any effect. The aim of the present study was to investigate how the timing of feeding relative to milking influences milk production and flow, milking time and hormone secretion. The trial was carried out over 9 weeks with 24 cows at varying stages of lactation. Each treatment period lasted for 3 weeks, including one registration week. The cows were fed ad lib. and were exposed to three treatments: feeding 1·5 h before milking (FBM), feeding at exactly the same time as milking (FDM) and feeding 1·5 h after milking (FAM). The most marked treatment effect was observed during morning milking. FDM resulted in higher milk production and higher yields of protein and lactose. FAM produced a lower fat yield and a lower fat content compared with FDM, and a lower lactose content than either FBM and FDM. Milking time was longer when cows were fed during milking, but no significant effects on milk flow were found. The amount of milk collected during the first 2 min of milking was lower when cows were fed after milking. Milking-related oxytocin and somatostatin secretion was lower in FAM than in FDM. The level of prolactin was lower when cows were fed before or after than during milking. More studies are needed to elucidate whether there is a long-term effect on milk production related to the discussed milking routines.

The initial shape of the reaction zones for the interaction of hydrogen and oxygen on the surfaces of the single crystals of platinum in FEM and FIM devices is discussed in connection with the effect of temperature and surface anisotropy. Interaction of the (H2 + O2) mixture has been studied at room temperature and the results were confronted with the interaction of hydrogen and preadsorbed oxygen at low temperature and with the anisotropy of the low-temperature field-corrosion of platinum.
