Pests, parasites and pathogenic agents have exerted a notable influence on the process of economic development of pre-industrial Europe, in view of their influence on the health, longevity and reproduction of human beings, plants and animals. On each occasion man has reacted to biological uncertainty with responses that were public or private, formal or informal and differed in both efficacy and cost. Success has always been partial, and dependent on experience, knowledge and the investment of economic resources. These reciprocal influences have never been allocated an appropriate or convincing place in the institutional model or those of Smith, Malthus, Ricardo or Marx, typically exploited to describe and explain the flux and reflux of the economic development of pre-industrial Europe. In these proceedings of Study Week promoted by the Fondazione Datini, the leading experts in the sector have undertaken to analyse, exemplify and discuss the precise nature of the complex interactions between economic and biological processes and agents. Adopying a stimulating, innovative and interdisciplinary approach, they appraise the degree to which such processes acted in reciprocal independence, whether there was a significant co-evolution and what prospects there are for developing explanatory models that better grasp the essentially bilateral nature of such interactions.

Many observational studies have consistently shown that high-flux haemodialysis (hf-HD) has positive effects on the survival and morbidity of uraemic patients when compared with low-flux haemodialysis, and mainly considering the results of Membrane Permeability Outcome (MPO) studies there is evidence favouring high-flux treatments. A further improvement in convective treatments is represented by the on-line modality. On-line preparation from fresh dialysate by a cold-sterilizing filtration process is a cost-effective method of providing large volumes of infusion solution. Randomized, controlled, large-sized trials with long follow-up in haemofiltration (HF) are unfortunately lacking, possibly suggesting the difficulties in performing these trials, mainly in providing the same urea Kt/V considered adequate in HD. On-line haemodiafiltration (HDF) is considered the most efficient technique of using high-flux membranes, and clearances of small solutes like urea are higher in HDF than in HF and of middle solutes like β‎‎‎2-microglobulin are higher than in hf-HD. Thus HDF, as a strategy based on simultaneous diffusive and convective transport, may combine the beneficial effects of diffusive standard HD with the possible advantages of convective HF. Five large, randomized controlled trials just concluded are inconclusive in definitively clarifying the impact of on-line HDF on chronic kidney disease stage 5 patient outcomes.

This chapter discusses the basic properties of the group of symplectomorphisms of a compact connected symplectic manifold and its subgroup of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. It begins by showing that the group of symplectomorphisms is locally path-connected and then moves on to the flux homomorphism. The main result here is a theorem of Banyaga that characterizes the Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms in terms of the flux homomorphism. In the noncompact case there is another interesting homomorphism, called the Calabi homomorphism, that takes values in the reals and may be defined on the universal cover of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. The chapter ends with a brief comparison of the topological properties of the group of symplectomorphisms with those of the group of diffeomorphisms.

During 2010 an increasing incidence of narcolepsy in children and adolescents was reported in Sweden and Finland, associated with the pandemic vaccine Pandemrix. Vaccination has since the 1940s been seen as a magic bullet to protect from flu. During past influenza pandemics in Sweden, the vaccine was, however, either absent or in short supply. Since the pandemic 2009-10 – caused by the Influenza A(H1N1) virus – production increased and mass vaccination campaigns were launched in many countries. Sweden was the most successful, with over sixty per cent coverage in what became the largest public health intervention in Swedish history. Facing the A(H1N1) pandemic, Swedish mass vaccination efforts were preceded by consensual decision-making relying on historically successful vaccination campaigns. Paradoxically, both the efficiency of the response as well as the approach to consensual decision-making may have harmed instead of strengthened public trust. The aim is to discuss pandemic influenza as an old and a contemporary problem and place it within the framework of national and international flu vaccination practices, pandemic preparedness, and nation building. This work is built on research on flu pandemics, on public documents and on interviews with parents of children suffering vaccination-induced narcolepsy and with officials working on pandemic preparedness.

Heat waves will occur in Rotterdam with greater frequency in the future. Those affected most will be the elderly – a group that is growing in size. In the light of the Paris heat wave of August 2003 and the one in Rotterdam in July 2006, mortality rates among the elderly in particular are likely to rise in the summer. METHOD The aim of the Hotterdam research project was to gain a better understanding of urban heat. The heat was measured and the surface energy balance modelled from that perspective. Social and physical features of the city we identified in detail with the help of satellite images, GIS and 3D models. We determined the links between urban heat/surface energy balance and the social/physical features of Rotterdam by multivariable regression analysis. The crucial elements of the heat problem were then clustered and illustrated on a social and a physical heat map. RESULTS The research project produced two heat maps, an atlas of underlying data and a set of adaptation measures which, when combined, will make the city of Rotterdam and its inhabitants more aware and less vulnerable to heat wave-related health effects. CONCLUSION In different ways, the pre-war districts of the city (North, South, and West) are warmer and more vulnerable to urban heat than are other areas of Rotterdam. The temperature readings that we carried out confirm these findings as far as outdoor temperatures are concerned. Indoor temperatures vary widely. Homes seem to have their particular dynamics, in which the house’s age plays a role. The above-average mortality of those aged 75 and over during the July 2006 heat wave in Rotterdam can be explained by a) the concentration of people in this age group, b) the age of the homes they live in, and c) the sum of sensible heat and ground heat flux. A diverse mix of impervious surfaces, surface water, foliage, building envelopes and shade make one area or district warmer than another. Adaptation measures are in the hands of residents, homeowners and the local council alike, and relate to changing behaviour, physical measures for homes, and urban design respectively.

The term suburb is one that is imbued with the stasis associated with dwelling in a place and yet suburbs are charged with a greater sense of flux than this may suggest. The chapter looks more closely at the heavily urbanized corridors that exist between major cities. It explores the evidence for the economic importance of megalopolis in the US, but also the zwischenstadt in Europe and desakota regions in Asia. It then goes on to look at the numerous different retail, office, airport, and science park enclaves that make up this mid-urban realm.

The fatty acid oxidation disorders are a group of autosomally recessively inherited disorders of energy metabolism that may present with life-threatening hypoketotic hypoglycemia, encephalopathy and hepatic dysfunction, muscle symptoms, and/or cardiomyopathy. Milder phenotypes may present in adulthood, causing exercise intolerance, episodic rhabdomyolysis, and neuropathy. Specific investigations include acylcarnitine profiling, urine organic acid analysis, fibroblast or leucocyte studies of fatty acid oxidation flux/enzyme activity, and genetic testing. Management varies depending on the condition but includes avoidance of precipitants such as fasting, fever, and intense exercise, a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet, and supplementation with carnitine or riboflavin. Inborn errors of riboflavin transport mainly present with Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome. Some patients respond dramatically to riboflavin supplementation; therefore it has to be tried in all suspected patients.

This chapter first considers the nature of conflicts between investors and states. Three of the most common measures that may lead to a dispute are government actions that cancel or change the contractual or licence rights of an investment; seize or cancel property rights owned by an investor; or change legislation or regulations. The chapter then examines the various means provided by treaties to resolve such conflicts. Most investment treaties provide four separate dispute settlement methods: consultations and negotiations between contracting states; arbitration between contracting states; consultations and negotiations between covered investors and host governments; and investor–state arbitration. Finally, criticisms of investor–state arbitration are considered, regarding the integrity of arbitrators, treatment exceptions, arbitral procedure, transparency of proceedings, and submissions by non-disputing parties. The chapter concludes that the dispute settlement process seems to be in a state of flux and is open to various options for reform.

There, Hawthorne’s narrator sympathetically presses Hester Prynne’s dusty, scarlet A against his heart, feeling a burning tingle as he places himself in her position. Sections read touch and untouchability in The Scarlet Letter, exploring what encouraged male readers to overcome what Henry Thoreau referred to as masculinity’s “gulf of feeling” to experience sentimental connection. Writing through alienation and writer’s block, Hawthorne’s tingling connection with Hester in the Custom-House propelled him to complete the novel in just five weeks, after being fired from his position as surveyor. His imagined intimacy with Prynne emerges against myths of the self-made man and the untouchable citizen-subject. Readings of tactility reveal alphabetic print and textual space as sites of flux and flow, intimacy and distance, as writers and readers sympathetically lean into and recoil from page and print.

This chapter argues that paradox arises, not from our phenomenal experience, but from our efforts at conceptualizing it through the logic of comprehension dominating Western thought. It identifies an Aristotelian-inspired “Being” ontology and a corresponding representationalist epistemology as the primary underlying cause of paradox in truth claims made on empirical observations. Drawing on a Heraclitean-inspired tradition in the West, this chapter shows how paradox may be circumnavigated through an alternative logic of Otherness. Underlying this metaphysical outlook is an ontology of Becoming, which takes flux and change as pervasive and inexorable. Language and logic are thus seen as futile attempts to fix the unfixable. Embracing a Becoming world view of reality enables us to recognize the limits of logic and representation and hence develop more nuanced and oblique modes of communication and responses. A Becoming world view sensitizes us to a necessary Otherness always already immanent in representational truth claims.

We tend to think about the inhabitants of the Atlantic world as members of discrete groups. We thus argue that ‘Spaniards’ had encountered ‘Indians’, ‘Europeans’ competed with one another, and ‘Africans’ were imported as slaves. Although these categories may be meaningful to us, like all identities and processes of identification, they were dynamic constructions in constant flux. Having gradually emerged during the early modern period and to a great extent because of the engagement with the Atlantic world, their creation involved both confrontation and dialogue and it allowed for competing interpretations. Not only were these identities and processes of identification highly complex, other group solidarities that were just as important — such as the division between people of different religions, nobles and commoners, local citizens and foreigners — mediated between them, on occasions breaking them apart. This article discusses identities and processes of identification in the Atlantic world. It also examines how people inhabiting the Atlantic world are differentiated according to religion.

Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma are infections primarily transmitted by ticks (but, in the case of certain Rickettsial species, are transmitted by other vectors as well), which can cause an abrupt, febrile, and flu-like illness often associated with headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rash, elevated liver function tests, and thrombocytopenia. Disease can be severe, particularly when patients are infected with Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever); patients may develop central nervous system involvement, shock, and multiorgan failure. Diagnostic tests are imperfect, and prompt empiric treatment should be initiated if disease is suspected. Doxycycline is the treatment of choice, and coinfection with other vector-borne pathogens may need to be considered.

Leptospirosis is one of the most prevalent zoonotic diseases worldwide. Pathogenic spirochaetes are shed in the urine of infected mammals to the environment. Humans are infected through contact with contaminated material. Leptospirosis is more prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, but exists in all continents except Antarctica. The disease is difficult to diagnose and hence frequently neglected. Its clinical picture ranges from a mild flu-like disease to a life-threatening form with pulmonary haemorrhage, liver failure and acute kidney injury (AKI), called Weil disease, which may affect 10% of those with clinical disease. Typically, fever, myalgia and headache progress to nausea and vomiting, jaundice, red eyes, and other manifestation affecting skin, brain, and other organs.Kidney involvement, characterized by acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, is nearly universal. It may be clinically manifested as a tubulopathy with urinary electrolytes wasting, hypokalaemia and hypomagnesaemia and/or as AKI, which is more frequently non-oliguric. Antibiotic therapy may reduce hospitalization time and AKI frequency. Otherwise management is supportive, including timely and adequate dialysis support.

This chapter discusses how television changed college sports. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the NCAA pursued deals worth millions of dollars with commercial, for-profit networks instead of with nonprofit, public radio and television, where the link between athletics and higher education might have been maintained and the commercialism of intercollegiate athletics restrained. The college sports establishment chose an economic playbook that promised direct benefit to athletics and to the institutions in which they operated. Televised football increased the visibility of a few privileged schools, but the bulk of money an institution derived from TV appearances went to support athletics. The schools themselves willingly complied with television policy so they could use television revenues and booster contributions inspired by TV exposure to pay for sports rather than to fund them from the educational budget. Thus, the commercial route was the one taken. While the NCAA may have exerted control over who played football on television, the networks found ways to use dollar appeal and flex their muscle to stretch television policy in their favor.

É nesse sentido, que a série que ora apresentamos em dois volumes, registra na forma de artigos, tanto no âmbito de pesquisas cientificas como na apresentação de relatos reflexivos, práticas decoloniais em estudos relacionados a Linguística, Educação, Direito, Literatura e Análise do Discurso. A coletânea é composta por textos produzidos por mestres, mestrandos, doutores e doutorandos que fazem pesquisa em universidades públicas de todo Brasil e do exterior, demonstrando a importância da construção e do fluxo de saberes entre linguagens, corpos e culturas híbridas. Reunimos nos dois volumes da série, pesquisadores sem preocupação com uma unidade disciplinar, mas que tivessem como foco a formulação de pensamentos a partir dos estudos decoloniais. Neste primeiro volume destacamos artigos que apresentam a literatura como ferramenta de resistência, e mais dois textos que evidenciam a opressão de grupos subalternos, um no âmbito religioso e o segundo que problematiza discursos na conjuntura política.

Hantavirus disease or at least its renal form, the so-called haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is the only globally emerging acute kidney injury (AKI) form, and currently without doubt the most underestimated form of community-acquired AKI. Hantavirus disease is a viral zoonosis, caused by inhalation of infectious aerosolized excreta from chronically infected rodents, which are both the reservoir and the vector of different hantavirus species. Clinical presentation consists of sudden flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, myalgia), followed by gastrointestinal discomfort and AKI, often with anuria or oliguria. More rarely, acute myopia and/or non-cardiogenic acute lung oedema or injury is the presenting or complicating symptom. Laboratory hallmarks are initial thrombocytopenia and proteinuria, raised C-reactive protein and lactate dehydrogenase, left-shift leucocytosis, and typical but transient serum lipid disturbances. Spontaneous remission occurs within 2–3 weeks without sequelae. Case fatality rate is between 0.1% and 15% according to the infecting hantavirus species, but most infections show in fact an asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic presentation. Treatment is only supportive, but may necessitate life-saving intensive care techniques. Together with leptospirosis, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is the only form of AKI against which different vaccines are in use, but a World Health Organization-licensed hantavirus vaccine is still lacking.

The rise of globalisation has made it necessary for breakthroughs in scientific and technological fields in the direction of their usability, utilising efficient management practices and ethical methods. This, in turn, has powerfully stimulated the opening of new avenues of study to meet the developing patterns across all industries and service sectors over time. The progress and development that have resulted from the contributions of research done in the past have been only temporary. However, it was unable to fully measure the methodical sequences in terms of progress throughout to fulfil humanity's general needs in terms of establishing sustenance and stability. This was a limitation of the technology. This may be due to a lack of investigations being integrated across different fields and their integrity being maintained towards increasing overall societal welfare. In addition, the problem persists because of a concentration on a single discipline, which means that the integration viewpoint towards multiple streams, their research fields, and their contributions is not entirely integrated. The point of carrying out any study is to convey knowledge, and this process is fundamentally intertwined with various applications to attain socio-economic development in communities. In addition, the present state of the world is in a constant state of flux, which calls for well-balanced expansion and dissemination in every facet of adequate means of subsistence. As a result, maintaining one's lifestyle will become more difficult in the years to come. This forces the sharing of information via the gathering of research that spans inter-disciplines and multi-disciplines to advance socio-economic growth as a whole. Keeping these considerations in mind, the international conference's purpose is to significantly impact the paradigms governing the most cutting-edge research in engineering and technology. In order to assist the rearing of total sustenance and bring about a remarkable development capable of meeting the difficulties of the future, the conference seeks to have knowledge integration via an awareness of the many studies. The Sri Venkateshwaraa College of Technology conceived of and organised the international conference, which took place on March 26 and 27, 2022, and was aimed at evaluating and collecting the engineering and technological contributions made across the country the world in preparation for the dissemination of knowledge. Hepatitis means ‘inflammation of the liver’ and is manifest with symptoms that include malaise, anorexia, fever, flu-like symptoms, and pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, with the pain being caused by swelling of the liver and its capsule. Elevations in circulating hepatic enzymes, particularly aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase, are common, with jaundice occurring some time after the onset of other symptoms and signs. There are five viruses that primarily cause viral hepatitis: hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses, abbreviated HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV, respectively. These viruses are all hepatotrophic, in that the liver is the primary site of infection. HAV, HBV, and HEV are usually acute, self-limiting infections that may, nonetheless, cause morbidity and, in the case of HEV, fatality. However, HBV and, more so, HCV can cause chronic carriage of the virus over many years, as well as the development of chronic hepatitis. HDV is only pathogenic in conjunction with HBV. After recovery from acute infection with HAV, individuals have long-lasting immunity against further infection. The same holds true for the majority of individuals with acute HBV infection. There seems to be little natural immunity to HCV infection, and a significant proportion of cases result in chronic hepatitis. Immunity to HEV is not long-lasting, and repeated infections are possible. Many other viruses can cause hepatitis, of which cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, Epstein–Barr virus, and flaviviruses such as dengue and yellow fever are the most important. The liver, however, is not their primary site of replication or cellular damage.

A sociedade vem sofrendo modificações em suas relações intersubjetivas em velocidades jamais vistas na história da humanidade. Neste cenário, deve-se considerar o intercâmbio entre diferentes culturas, com os mais variados níveis de desenvolvimentos econômicos e tecnológicos, somados às plataformas digitais de comunicação e, ainda, às mudanças paradigmáticas no fluxo informacional. O ethos exigido tanto na condução das coisas públicas pelo Estado, quanto na vida cívica do cidadão é, diuturnamente, testado com variantes axiológicas crescentes e que, a um só tempo, podem ser o instrumento de pacificação necessária aos conflitos derivados da convivência social, como, ainda, podem ser objeto destas mesmas pretensões resistidas. A fórmula para se conseguir manejar toda sorte de situações oriundas desta dinâmica acelerada não mais se repousa na mera subsunção das normas aos fatos, demandando-se, em verdade, ao Direito, uma hermenêutica mais complexa, rica em soluções que possam se dar em tempo mínimo. É neste sentido que se busca um novo olhar que resista a um positivismo frio e, ainda, a um relativismo perigoso e subjetivista, o qual pode seduzir um olhar incauto e virar um cheque em branco para autoritarismos. A dosagem reside na virtude aristotélica do meio termo, fugindo-se de fórmulas prontas, as quais serão obsoletas em questão de pouco tempo, como, ainda, reside no afastamento de radicalismos que ignorem as mutações na sociedade. A hermenêutica, deste modo, apresenta-se como o meio necessário para trazer as soluções demandadas, carreando nesta busca resolutiva a ponderação de valores, a noção de justiça, a obediência à democracia e à lei (sobretudo à Constituição) e a busca ao bem comum. Com base em pensadores como Schleiermacher, Ausubel, Gadamer, dentre outros, podemos ver a hermenêutica jurídica como a busca de um significado normativo que desvele uma universalidade e, portanto, a verdade, o bom e o justo. A lei, sob a égide hermenêutica, não é mais um comando fechado em si, mas pertencente a um sistema que envolve, ainda, valores, princípios e tem objetivos claros a serem atingidos e que, nem sempre, resultam de sua aplicação imediata, mas dos desdobramentos que dela possam advir. A presente obra propõe aos seus autores uma releitura de temas que demandem um olhar hermenêutico que integre este cabedal de variantes altamente mutáveis, dado o aumento da complexidade das relações humanas. Assim, o tônus da obra é o de chamar a atenção para as causas do tratamento normativo, ou seja, porque certo tema tem relevância a ponto de ser regrado pela lei, e de como sua resolução demanda, consequentemente, um processo integrativo dos atos e fatos jurídicos aos valores constitucionais que orientarão a interpretação universalista desta mesma norma. O fenômeno de mutação constitucional, por exemplo, é um exemplo vívido de como uma mesma previsão legal pode ter sua aplicação variada conforme a hermenêutica que se lança sobre ele, com a lente axiológica de seu tempo e espaço. Não é por menos que normas-princípio são extraídas do texto constitucional sem que haja menção expressa sobre elas. É deste exercício hermenêutico que todos os ramos do Direito, irradiados a partir da Carta Magna, recebem a carga interpretativa mais apta a resolver os problemas no seio social, buscando-se, desta maneira, a almejada justiça.

The first cases of a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) were identified toward the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China. Over the following months, this virus spread to everywhere in the world. By now no country has been spared the devastation from the loss of lives from the disease (Covid-19) and the economic and social impacts of responses to mitigate the impact of the virus. Our lives in South Africa have been turned upside down as we try to make the best of this bad situation. The 2020 school year was disrupted with closure and then reopening in a phased approach, as stipulated by the Department of Education. This booklet is a collective effort by academics who are Members of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and other invited scholars to help you appreciate some of the basic scientific facts that you need to know in order to understand the present crisis and the various options available to respond to it. We emphasise that the threat of infectious diseases is not an entirely new phenomenon that has sprung onto the stage out of nowhere. Infectious diseases and pandemics have been with us for centuries, in fact much longer. Scientists have warned us for years of the need to prepare for the next pandemic. Progress in medicine in the course of the 20th century has been formidable. Childhood mortality has greatly decreased almost everywhere in the world, thanks mainly, but not only, to the many vaccines that have been developed. Effective drugs now exist for many deadly diseases for which there were once no cures. For many of us, this progress has generated a false sense of security. It has caused us to believe that the likes of the 1918 ‘Spanish flu’ pandemic, which caused some 50 million deaths around the world within a span of a few months, could not be repeated in some form in today’s modern world. The Covid-19 pandemic reminds us that as new cures for old diseases are discovered, new diseases come along for which we are unprepared. And every hundred or so years one of these diseases wreaks havoc on the world and interferes severely with our usual ways of going about our lives. Today’s world has become increasingly interconnected and interdependent, through trade, migrations, and rapid air travel. This globalisation makes it easier for epidemics to spread, somewhat offsetting the power of modern medicine. In this booklet we have endeavoured to provide an historical perspective, and to enrich your knowledge with some of the basics of medicine, viruses, and epidemiology. Beyond the immediate Covid-19 crisis, South Africa faces a number of other major health challenges: highly unequal access to quality healthcare, widespread tuberculosis, HIV infection causing AIDS, a high prevalence of mental illness, and a low life expectancy, compared to what is possible with today’s medicine. It is essential that you, as young people, also learn about the nature of these new challenges, so that you may contribute to finding future solutions.
