In modern and contemporary research focused on the manufacture of smaller, faster, efficient and selective products, the production of materials with a well-defined microscopic spatial arrangements, it is of vital importance for the creation of new electronic, optical or magnetic devices. A potentially attractive way of assembly and maintain such microscopically controlled structures, is the use of molecular based materials. The research on the field of molecular magnetism, is mainly focused on molecular systems containing a finite number of coupled magnetic ions. This type of magnetic nano-molecules, generally called single magnetic molecules – SMMs, are objects placed in between of the classical and quantum physics. In fact, from a classical point of view, these structure shows phenomena such as: the slow relaxation of the magnetization and a widespread magnetic hysteresis. On te contrary, due to their dimensions, such structure can also shows quantum phenomena. The molecular magnets, indeed, are characterized by phenomena like the magnetic bistability e the most important feature of the magnetic quantum tunnelling, which is a purely quantum phenomena. These are some physical characteristics of SMMs that allow a wide range of applications of which we found their use as tools for data storage and nan-scale qbits used for the realization of quantum computer. Depending on the required applications, it is possible, today, synthetize an ad hoc molecular structure able to meet all the functional requirements. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to know and fully understand the behaviour of these molecules and therefore, are needed detailed information from the experimental methods, as well as, information obtained by theoretical models. The main topics of research: implementation of a simply simulation tool – PRAXIS - that permit the understanding of the magnetic properties of the SMMs, to verify the experimental data or to be used as experimental data predictor in order to synthetize ad hoc magnetic molecular clusters with improved properties for Nano-technological applications. Following an accurate scheme based on software engineering protocol, PRAXIS has been created with to particular aims: to verify the experimental data obtained measuring the physical properties of the SMMs, and to predict them in different situations. As last feature od PRAXIS, there is the possibility of theoretical auto-assembling of a large number of magnetic molecules, modelling them in a wide range of situations.

The optical properties of gold nanoparticles are the object of study of the present Ph. D. thesis. Different clusters in various conditions have been considered in order to simulate the absorption spectra at theoretical level and to correlate to the electronic structure the information obtained from the interpretation of the spectra. The study of electronic excitations has been carried out within the TDDFT theory implemented in the ADF code. The gold nanoparticles have different and interesting physical and chemical properties and in the scientific community they have attracted great attention at both experimental and theoretical level. The properties for which they have been widely used, are mainly catalysis, absorption and selective oxidation, while those which are now being studied with increasing interest are optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Biology, biophysics and medicine are the applicative fields in which recently the gold nanoparticles have greater impact. In order to contribute to the study of the optical properties of the gold nanoparticles, we have tried to propose theoretical models with the goal to rationalize the experimental findings and to realize a computational model for new nanostructured materials with specific optical properties. We have therefore addressed this issue by handling several aspects. Below it will be described the path followed during the Ph. D. research indicating the chapters of the second part of the thesis in which the various arguments are treated in detail. Starting with both experimental and theoretical data found in literature, we have focused at first on naked gold clusters, to simulate the note SPR absorption band ascribed to the electron collective oscillations. We have tried to push the size of the cluster to the maximum computationally allowed to reproduce the red-shift/size increasing trend, observed in the UV-visible spectra, and to draw as closely as possible to the minimum size of the systems synthesized in the laboratory. Within the limitations due to high density of states in the case of larger clusters, we have tried to rationalize the results in terms of conventional quantum chemistry arguments. (Chapter 4) We have concentrated then on the refining of the computational technique, introducing the spin-orbit coupling in the calculation of valence excitation spectra of small regular icosahedrical bimetallic systems with closed shell. In this context we have discussed the differences between a SR (Scalar relativistic) and a SO (spin-orbit) TDDFT calculation scheme and also those due to different heteroatoms present in the centre of the gold cage. Thus, we have identified a diagonal trend between two elements of Group V B (V and Nb) and two from Group VI B (Mo and W) of the Periodic Table. (Chapters 5 and 6) Finally we have moved to the study of the electronic excitation phenomena from the valence to the core, simulating the XANES spectra of systems functionalized with metilthiolate. The experimental molecular models that we have compared, were similar in size but different in composition (dodecanethiolate) and in structure. Nevertheless, grounded on calculations, we have given a more detailed interpretation of the intense experimental band: it is the result of two unresolved bands which involve both S-Au and S-C antibonding states. Moreover, depending on the structure of the cluster, and then the types of interactions present, we have observed changes in the spectral patterns. (Chapter 7) In the first part of the thesis have been developed some general issues and some theoretical aspects with which deal the above chapters. In particular, in Chapter 1 is considered the wide nanoparticles main theme, in Chapter 2, the electronic spectroscopy and Chapter 3 the theoretical DFT and TDDFT methods with particular emphasis on aspects related to the relativistic formalism.

The present dissertation describes the work carried out to setup a biogeochemical 3D model for the Mediterranean Sea (OPATM-BFM) and the analysis of the preliminary results and the critical issues emerged. The purposes of this work range from the operational short term forecast to the multi annual climatological simulations. Main part of the work has been spent on the setup of the system basically composed by a passive Tracer Model (OPA Tracer Model) coupled with a biogeochemical flux model (BFM). The work is organized as follows: chapter 1) is an overview of problematics, definitions and phenomology of the Mediterranean sea ecosystem; chapter 2) presents the modeling approach applied to ecosystem; chapter 3) contains details about the specific model assembled for the Mediterranean Ecosystem; chapter 4) describes the operational model devoleped and the first evaluation of the results; chapter 5) presents the analysis of the results of a multi-annual simulation; chapter 6) analyzes the equations governing phytoplankton growth and light acclimation; chapter 7) concludes the work with final remarks and future work. The choices of the domain resolution, the complexity of the ecosystem model and the fact that large part of the packages were not designed for parallel architectures required a significant work for the optimization of the code to obtain results in reasonable time. Currently the implementation of 1 year simulation takes 48 hours in CINECA high performance computer on 32 processors. The offline paradigm adopted has shown to be the right solution to interface the model to the different OGCMs that present peculiar domain discretizations. In particular in the operational short term forecast application the core of the system OPATM-BFM is merged in an automatic pre/operational chain where the general circulation model generating the circulation (INGV MFS-SYS2b) adopts a data assimilation scheme. The result is one of the first examples of biogeochemical predictive model that is pre-operational in Europe. Model validation is based on the qualitative comparison of chlorophyll-a satellite measurements and total chlorophyll-a simulated by the model for the period of April 2007 - November 2007. Results show that the model is in general able to reproduce the west/east chlorophyll gradient but, with respect to climatolgy, there is a general overestimation of the southern areas of western and eastern sub-basin and a general underestimation of the northern areas in particular in the Gulf of Lions deep mixing area. 1 The second implementation proposed is performed on multiannual time scale. In this case the forcing OGCM is an hindcast model. Also in this case model result are compared with SeaWiFs satellite data: the seasonal cycle of chlorophyll is qualitatively reproduced for the western area with a general overestimation in the eastern area during winter. A longitudinal dependent light extinction coefficient is applied to the model to reproduce the longitudinal Deep Chlorophyll Maximum gradient characterizing the Mediterranean Sea. Analyses of vertically integrated primary production show that the model represents the biogeochemical features of the western basin whilst the Eastern basin (modeled) is less oligotrophic than expected. An explanation for this result can be related to the overestimation in the eastern intermediate layer (200 − 600m) of phosphate limiting nutrient concentration. Half of the primary carbon production flows to bacteria as in the upper range of previous estimations. As for chlorophyll surface data, there is a well marked seasonal cycle of vertical integrated phytoplanktonic biomass with a maximum during winter. Dominant functional groups are picophytoplanton and diatoms with an alternating behaviour: during winter the two groups present equal biomass but in summer, model simulates a clear dominance of picophytoplanton. Bacterial biomass is of the same order of magnitude of phytoplantkon biomass and it is in agreement with what observed in previous studies. This modeling system is currently under development in several projects: MERSEA, SESAME, VECTOR and several new projects are going to benefit from this OPATMBFM development. In particular, in both the operational and multi annual configurations OPATM-BFM, has been chosen as pilot application in the framework of FP7 DORII project started in february 2008. In the DORII project, OPATM-BFM will be integrated with real time observing systems (i.e. Slocum Glider system) by a Communication Technology including also data assimilation schemes. In CLECOMED (Impatti dei cambiamenti CLimatici sull’ ECOsistema del Mar MEDiterraneo) project, based on CINECA cornerstone projects, OPTM-BFM will be further optimized to face the high computational demand of multi-annual climatological simulations (SESAME and VECTOR). Moreover, the management of the large amount of data produced by the simulations will be a further issue.

The thesis is focused on the study of the dynamics of photoemission processes for atoms and molecules. A first line of research has followed the description of diffraction and interference effects in the photoionization profiles at high energy for several systems, through an approach based on the DFT method combined with the use of a B-spline basis. These diffraction and interference effects appear in the spectra as a result of wave propagation. The resulting oscillations represent a general phenomenon, present in polyatomic targets, from diatomics to complex non-symmetrical molecules, and from the deep core to the outer-valence shell. Firstly, in the core region, we analysed the oscillations in the intensity ratio C2,3/C1,4 in the carbon 1s photoelectron spectrum for 2-butyne. Then in the inner-valence shell region, the interference effects in the photoionization spectra of simple polyatomic molecules (propane, butane, isobutane and cis/trans-2-butene) were studied and the results have been compared with experimental data collected at the SOLEIL Synchrotron in Paris. Furthermore, we have analysed the effect due to coherent emission from equivalent centers and diffraction from neighbouring non-equivalent atoms in core and valence photoelectron spectra. For this, we investigated mono and disubstituted fluoro- and iodo-acetylenes and compared them to the simple acetylene system. We also focused on interference effects in the outer-valence ionization cross sections of simple hydrocarbons and, in the same shell, we also studied the influence of geometrical structures on photoionization profiles of permethylated compounds. Finally, in the inner-valence shell region, we considered the photoionization profiles for the case of Ar@C60. The results were compared with a previous study on the C60 molecule. A second line of research has followed the correlated description of photoionization observables. We developed a new method based on an ab initio closecoupling formalism. The use of the Dyson orbitals allowed to study the photoemission observables of highly correlated systems. As a first application of this method, we performed highly correlated calculations on the primary ionic states and the prominent satellite present in the outer-valence photoelectron spectrum of CS. Dyson orbitals are coupled to accurate one-particle continuum orbitals to provide a correlated description of energy-dependent cross sections, asymmetry parameters, branching ratios and Molecular Frame Photoelectron Angular Distributions (MFPADs).

Bensi, Manuel. "Thermohaline variability and mesoscale dynamics observed at the E2M3A deep-site in the South Adriatic Sea." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trieste, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10077/7387.
Continuous measurements are strictly essential to better understand the deep convection as well as for monitoring the seasonal and interannual thermohaline variability in the ocean. For these reasons, the south Adriatic Sea has been constantly monitored by means of the E2M3A deep observational site, located in its central part (Latitude 41° 50’ N, Longitude 17° 45’ E, maximum depth 1250m) since 2006. Temperature, salinity and current time series collected between 2006 and 2010 are analysed in this thesis and they represent the longest time series available for this region. Moreover, these time series are merged with Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) profiles obtained from several oceanographic cruises to provide the necessary spatial distribution of data for describing the thermohaline properties in the study area. The analysis of the data presented here shows that winter 2007 was characterized by a weak convection, while winter 2008 and following winters revealed a stronger deep convection able to reach 800-900m in February 2008. Time series highlight the abrupt temperature (T) and salinity (S) decrease, noticeable down to 600-700m depth from March 2008 on. The intermediate layer experienced a maximum decrease in T and S of ~0.4°C and ~0.06 respectively, clearly evident after each strong winter convection phase. The bottom layer (~1200m), instead, shows an opposite behaviour: it suffered a continuous T and S increase (linear trend of ~0.05 °C y-1 and ~0.004 y-1, respectively) during the whole observational period. These changes are discussed in a context of strong relationship between the variability of the Ionian surface circulation recently discovered, and the heat and salt content changes in the South Adriatic presented in this study. The results show that the mechanism triggering the salt content changes in the South Adriatic is based mainly on the winter convection, which transfers surface fresher water towards deeper layers. Nevertheless, current measurements also indicate that the passage of mesoscale eddies in the region can produce sudden thermohaline perturbations along the water column for 10-15 days. Cyclonic eddies seem to be more frequent in the proximity of the observational site than the anticyclonic ones. Interestingly, the comparison between time series and satellite images (Chl-a surface distribution) reveals, for the first time, that the vortices act along the whole water column. Their passage produces a twofold effect: the contribution to the re-stratification of the water column during the post convection phase, by exchanging the buoyancy between the mixed path and the surrounding waters, and the transfer of heat and salt between the deep and the intermediate layers.

Colucci, Renato. "Some evidences of recent and holocenic evolution of the cryosphere in Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy)." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trieste, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10077/8664.
The cryosphere, an integrated part of the Earth system, refers to that portion of the physical world that exists in its frozen state. Ice caps, sea ice, icebergs, lake ice, snow cover, ground ice, glaciers and ice sheets and shelves obviously belong to this set. It also comprises all those parts of territory which, though not presenting water in solid state, always maintain temperatures below zero (i.e. permafrost environments). Studies on the cryosphere of Friuli Venezia Giulia were almost always referred to the attempt of reconstructing the major glacial phasesof the Pleistocene period. The only studied aspect of today’s cryosphere is that of the small glaciers of the Julian Alps, on which terminus shrinkage or advances measurements were taken since the end of the 19th century. The fact that today’s cryosphere isn’t studied that much is probably due to its scarcity compared to other sectors of the Alps. This work intends to fill this gap, trying to characterise as best as possible the present state of the cryosphere on the Friuli Venezia Giulia territory. In order to do so the whole mountain territory of Friuli Venezia Giulia was taken into consideration, ultimately focusing on two distinct sectors: the Julian Alps (south-east area), which hosts the last glacial remains on the Canin and Montasiomassifs, and the Carnic sector of the Alps (north-west area). The latter is the only one that was involved in a survey aiming at the characterisation of mountain permafrost, due to investigations made to realise the rock glaciers inventory of the Italian Alps. A third aspect, still not deeply analysed also on a global level though potentially capable of bringing crucial developments in the future, is that of permanent ice deposits inside cavities. The so named IceCaves are just one of several peculiar phenomena which show a reaction to climate and somewhat sparse research over the past few decades has shown that ice in temperate caves holds similar and complementary secrets to ice elsewhere. Friuli Venezia Giulia contains a great number of cavities (over 7000) also at high altitudes, since of the almost 5000km2 mountain area 1900 are interested by carbonate rocks (limestones and dolostones). This work therefore focuses on the following three aspects: define the present-day state of glacial remains on Mount Canin, also to test new methodologies; update the rock glaciers national inventory thanks to the recent and ongoing developments in earth observation techniques and related geoinformatics; finally, begin a systematic monitoring of cavities with permanent ice remains. As far as the Canin glaciers are concerned the attention focused on the Canin Orientale glacier, actually representing one of the lowermost glaciers of the Alpine chain. A combined strategy involving Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) technologies was used. GPR profiles were performed during Autumn 2011, to reveal the thicknesses of the glacier, test a methodology to image the internal structure and to estimate the volume of main glaciological units. LiDAR surveys on the area of the Canin Orientale glacier were purposely performed at the same time of the GPR surveys, to allow the creation of a complete and highly precise data set also from a topographic point of view. Thanks to a further LiDAR survey undertaken in 2006 by the Civil Defence of Friuli Venezia Giulia and integrating GPR measurements with these LiDAR surveys, we also quantified the volumetric variations of the glacier from 2006 to 2011. The revision of the Friuli Venezia Giulia part of the Italian rock glacier inventory was performed using both GIS techniques and activity on field. Aerial Orthorectified photographs (orthophotos) at high (2006 – 2009) and low (1998 and 2003) resolutions were used. A high resolution digital terrain model (DTM) was also used (cell size: 1m) interpolated from Aerial laser scannings (LiDAR) acquired between September 2006 and 2009 by the Civil Defence of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Terrain attributes (geometrical and spatial) were evaluated by using ArcGis10 software and its tools. Oblique terrestrial view (pseudo-3D image) of the DTM-hillshadehas been very useful in terms of interpretation of the topography and identification of lobes and shapes. The revision of this inventory uses the morphological classification by Barsch (1996) without taking in account the eventual mobilization of the landforms, and comprehends both rock glaciers and protalus ramparts, the latter taken into consideration for the first time on the Friuli Venezia Giulia territory. Results were analysed from a merely statistic point of view and then related to climate settings, testing the accuracy of a number of existing permafrost distribution models. To face the study of the underground cryosphere it was decided to install instruments in a cavity that would be suitable for the purpose. Attention mainly focused on monitoring the air temperature in several points of the cavity, the temperature of rock at several depths (2cm, 30cm and 100cm) to understand the evolution through time, and the temperature of ice. Moreover two benchmarks were placed to evaluate possible mass variations of the ice deposit. Again, in order to evaluate the thickness of ice and the internal stratifications, GPR was used in the above cave, as well as in another cave not installed with instruments as much. In view of performing further, more detailed inspections on ice in the future, a full stratigraphy of the visible layers on one side of the ice body was executed, together with an analysis of some clay samples extracted from the ice (X-ray difrattometer, LOI). Furthermore, to define the distribution of underground cryosphere in Friuli Venezia Giulia, all caves reporting the presence of snow, ice-snow and only ice were selected from the regional cave inventory of Friuli Venezia Giulia, therefore creating a useful working tool to start from for future studies. Despite of the gap of knowledge on the frozen karst caves in the area, all this instrumental and direct observations could provide a useful key to understand the permafrost distribution and its connections with the underground cryosphere and the glaciological evolution of the landscape.

ENGLISH Beach erosion has strongly affected a large number of beaches along the northern Adriatic coastal area over the past 20 years. Among the different engineering solutions available to contrast coastal erosion, the soft-engineering practice of beach re-nourishment is widely recognized to be a good compromise between desired outcomes and negative environmental impacts. One of the major issue concerning beach nourishment activities is the necessity to find suitable sources of sand, with the purpose of both reducing costs and minimizing environmental impacts. As stated by Finkl (1994), strategies for sand management are becoming increasingly more important as a coastal management tool. Also, the same author suggests that new sand management strategies, based on sound geological principles, must reflect sensitivity to environmental concerns. Rising sea levels, increased shore erosion, decreasing supplies of suitable fill materials (both on-and off-shore) and increasing concerns over environmental impacts associated with coastal protection measures (Finkl, 1994), are some of the reasons for a significant interest in these coastal problems. Along the Venice lagoon barrier islands and adjacent beaches (i.e. Jesolo, Sottomarina, Pellestrina, Isola Verde), 8×106m3 of sand have been extracted and placed for nourishment projects starting from the 1990s. Nowadays the Venice Water Authority (Magistrato alle Acque through its concessionary Consorzio Venezia Nuova, 2006) plans the placement of a total volume of 3 x 106 m3 of sand for beach maintenance, suggesting that critical beach erosion can be mitigated by smaller but more frequent nourishments. Previous re-nourishment projects were carried out through the utilization of sand borrow areas located offshore, at a distance of approximately 20km from the coast, a solution that has high operational costs. An alternative solution may be represented by the use of nearshore sand deposits, located in the proximity of tidal inlets or within the delta front area outside river mouths. Since inlets are the only access pathways between a lagoon and the sea, one of the major problems in terms of navigability is their intrinsic incapacity to maintain a predetermined configuration. Due to the longshore drift, the channel can shift and cause continuous filling of abandoned routes. Moreover, during storms landward pushes can increase the natural rise of the terminal lobe of the ebb delta, enhancing the phenomenon of shoaling at the channel entrance. During the last decades, the practice of ebb-tidal delta mining (Cialone and Stauble, 1998) has been progressively increasing, with the rising demand for suitable beach fill material along barrier islands. Ebb-tidal delta mining gives a new outlook on beach re-equilibrium projects since a large amount of sand, well compatible to native adjacent beaches, is stored by the ebb-tidal delta and easily mined at low cost. Dredging of an inlet opening and channel may also represent a good compromise between navigational needs and the rational use of dredged material. Several potential borrow areas were analysed in the present study, focussing on the evaluation of sand volumes deposited outside tidal inlets and river mouths, as a consequence of existing local hydrodynamic conditions. The coastal area object of the investigation is the northern Adriatic coastal area between the Isonzo and Po rivers, consisting of lagoon-river delta systems fronted by barrier islands and sandbars fed by tidal inlets. New data were collected through bathymetric surveys and sediment sampling and integrated with data from older surveys, thus obtaining a rather complete and uniform catalogue of sand resources. The development of a specific geostatistical procedure was also a main objective of the research, aimed at obtaining reliable results concerning ebb-tidal delta volumes. Considerable changes on the northern Adriatic barrier island systems and associated inlets have occurred over the last century as a result of intense human activity, including construction of permanent structures on both the barriers and the inlets. Those structures are mainly seawalls and groins designed to fix the shoreline and jetties to keep inlets from migrating and to maintain a given channel depth. Both natural and stabilized inlets were investigated, leading to a specific analysis concerning the morphodynamics of stabilized inlets. The present research has been developed through several phases. A detailed analysis of the overall morphology of different nearshore features such as natural and stabilized inlets and river mouths has been conducted, mainly through ESRI ArcGIS™ software, followed by elaborations of predictive numerical relationships concerning inlet parameters (i.e. tidal prism, cross-sectional area and ebb-tidal delta volume). The results obtained were then discussed and compared with analogue relationships elaborated for other environmental settings (i.e. the U.S.A and New Zealand coasts), highlighting the influence of local morphodynamic factors in determining ebb-tidal delta growth along the northern Adriatic coastal area. Methodological analyses concerned a large number of geostatistical tests through ESRI ArcGIS™ Geostatistical Analyst extension, that allowed to obtain a specific procedure for calculating ebb-tidal delta volumes. Finally, with the aim to provide a useful and agile tool for sand resources management, all results were integrated into a GIS geodatabase, named Ebb-delta Geodatabase, which includes the individuated potential sand borrow areas with associated grain size characteristics. The major outcomes of the research are the followings: 1) the seafloor morphologies facing the Piave and Adige river mouths exhibit strong erosional patterns over the last thirty years, possibly as a consequence of a decrease in sediment supply from rivers. Therefore, these areas were not considered suitable sand resources for beach nourishment projects, whereas their morphological evolution testifies that a disequilibrium in sediment supply and deposition is occurring; 2) ebb-tidal deltas represent significant sand sinks along the northern Adriatic coastal area, both the natural and the stabilized ones, with volumes comprised between c.a 270.000m3 and c.a. 10×106m3. 3) the newly-developed semi-authomatic procedure (ADP) provided to be a useful analytical tool for the evaluation of ebb-tidal delta volumes; the development of agile geostatistical procedures allowed the integration and processing of newly collected and older bathymetric and grain size data. Additionally, the study of the morphodynamics of Lido, Chioggia, Malamocco and Buso inlet, provided an analysis of ebb-tidal delta volumes and jetty effects. According to Carr and Kraus (2001) the offshore extent and dimension of the ebb-tidal delta is in great part determined by the magnitude of the tidal prism, the slope of the nearshore shelf, and the ebb-jet confinement caused by jetties. Notwithstanding the limited statistics, the direct proportionality between tidal prism and ebb-tidal delta volumes obtained from the application of the ADP on the bathymetric dataset, as well as the high correlation coefficient, demonstrates that natural or almost natural inlets in the northern Adriatic tend to build ebb-tidal deltas which are strongly influenced by tidal processes. Thus the effects of storm induced wave winnowing and longshore sedimentary drift may be considered uniformly distributed, since scattering in the prism vs. ebb-tidal delta volumes relationship is negligible. The V-P relationship of ebb tidal delta volumes in the northern Adriatic is very similar to that obtained by Hicks and Hume (1996), but significantly different from that found by Walton and Adams (1976) and Marino and Mehta (1987) in the United States. The use of a standardized procedure, as in the case of the geostatistical application here proposed, reduces the subjectivity in the calculation of the ebb-tidal deltavolume which occurs when using the Dean and Walton method (1973). The ADP could also be a useful method for a step-by-step preliminary test on ebb-tidal delta structure determination as in the case of complicated bathymetric frameworks. Equilibrium conditions based on delta volume vs. tidal prism relationships constructed for natural or almost natural northern Adriatic inlets, may be used to infer the hypothetical delta volume also for jettied inlets. During the past, many northern Adriatic inlets were strongly asymmetrical, because of significant longshore transport processes that gave rise to large up-drift coastal offset. Since the 19th Century, owing to great difficulties in navigation through the main channel, some inlets were fixed by jetties. Depending on the jetty length, precisely on the offset between shoreline and jetty apex, the ebb-tidal delta may re-shape or completely erode, and thus begin to re-form offshore, shifting to a distance equal to that of the jetty length. This may cause a delay in ebb-tidal delta formation, since the longshore sediment input is not immediately captured by the inlet system and stored in the ebb delta. In fact, the up-drift beach will accrete until the sediments are able to by-pass the jetty, thus entering in the inlet sedimentary budget. What can be observed is a large variety of new “human-induced” ebb deltas, whose equilibrium volumes may be reached only when a large amount of transported long-shore sediment has been trapped for long time. The “immaturity” status of the new ebb-tidal deltas is a major result, for the case of Lido inlet, the largest in the north Adriatic, where jetties were constructed about one century ago. According to Hansen and Knowles (1988) confinement of the flow by jetty construction has resulted in tidal flow abandonment of the natural main ebb channel, swash platform and marginal flood channels, resulting in effects similar to those observed in natural ebb-tidal delta breaching (Fitzgerald et al., 1978). After jetty construction, sediments were stored in the up-drift area of Punta Sabbioni and caused the accretion of that beach, resulting in a starved status of the ebb-tidal delta potential area. Considering that the present ebb-tidal delta volume accounts for only 10% of the equilibrium hypothetical volume, Lido inlet can be seen as a typical case of immature ebb-tidal delta, which only recently has significantly grown offshore due to the jetty fixation. Some doubts arise from the possibility that the delta volume will increase, owing to the periodic dredging operations that are done for navigational improvement. This practice may lead to a stationary configuration of the ebb tidal delta, that can be tested only through a specific monitoring plan. Additional studies concerning the behaviour of jettied inlets provided similar results in the cases of Malamocco, Chioggia and Buso inlets. Data analysis confirms the limited ebb-tidal delta extension also in these latter cases, and a morphodynamic response comparable to the one observed at Lido. The ebb-tidal delta sediment inventory that was processed through GIS has very high versatility and can associate type of deposits (grain-size, sorting) with its location and volume “excess”. Once the required physical parameters of the material are known for a beach that needs to be re-nourished, a GIS query could identify different potential borrow areas and subsequent actions can be planned. The suitability of a morphological artificial re-shaping may be planned, by mainly using sand from growing areas, i.e. the channel margin linear bar and terminal lobe, as well as the sedimentary surplus from navigational maintenance located inside the outer part of the main ebb channel. In any case, dredging must be limited both in extension and thickness, in order to minimize the already cited effects on wave and sedimentary dynamics. The use of ebb-tidal delta sediment as a source for beach nourishment material has and will be controversial. However, as suggested by Hansen and Work (1999) there is a natural variability to these inlets systems, and if artificial bypassing practices mimic the natural processes by removing a small percent of the delta on an annual basis, there is likely to be minimal adverse impact to adjacent shorelines. Mining the seaward edge of the delta over a large area would maintain the overall geomorphology of the inlet and would reduce the possibility of severely altering nearshore refraction and sediment transport patterns

The model is a conceptual representation (often simplified) of the real world or a its part, able to explain the functioning through a series of laws that represent it. These laws describe the basic principles of a theory and it is not always possible to fully solve it in an analytical way. When this happens it is possible to use numerical techniques to find the solution by means of software packages dedicated to the purpose. The development of the numerical model is composed of three distinct phases: the first (pre-processing) is the insertion of input data concerning the material, the boundary conditions of the process and the definition of the grid of resolution of the spatial domain (mesh) , the second (solver) is the resolution of equations that describe the phenomenon and the third (post-processing) is the visualization of the results. The models are a simple insertion of physical data within a software which uses them to provide a result, but is decisive the quality of the input data for the value or less of a model, and the quality of these data is obtained with rigorous research methods, developed ad hoc for each experience. The emphasis of this thesis is that modeling is not just learning to use a software, which, although extremely complex, definitely not ready for the world of research. The development of a model leading to the development and learning of new research techniques, dealing with different challenges every day, through different approaches from classical procedures, so as to continuously expand the cultural and entering a personal innovative methodology and the successful consolidated methods. There were followed with this method five different studies, which made me deal with problems relating to their specific resolution for each search: • Cooking of bakery products; • Media drying grapes; • Tartaric precipitation in wine; • Heat transfer in a pan; • Cooling system passive Icepack. The baking of a bakery product is an extremely complex process, where an infinite number of transformations physical, chemical and biochemical changes occur. The physical characteristics (particularly the diffusivity of the water within the matrix of the biscuit) are difficult to define, as well as the boundary conditions (absolute humidity of the cooking chamber and heat transfer convective coefficient). The determination of the mesh has been changed from the automatic software to improve the definition of the variables that are involved. Once the equations were solved the different views of the results have allowed us to identify the evolution of the temperature and humidity both spatial and temporally. The model was solved as a simultaneous heat and mass transfer, with a thickening of the mesh in the neighborhood of the points where the variables change more. The characterization of the variables was made with experiments specifically for the occasion. The various supports for the drying of the grapes that have been tested have completely different characteristics, both from a point of view of material (plastic, wood, bamboo, resins) that from a structural point of view (cassettes of different sizes and with different drawings between full and empty spaces). The big issue of this model, which set out the objective of determining the velocity field inside the different containers, has been to define the best geometry for each media type. The drawing representing the cassette in every detail appeared to be extremely complex and therefore with a number of degrees of freedom so high that even a large power computer could not complete the processing. The model, considering the speeds involved, has been resolved by ignoring the details of the parts where the flow of air and the wall appeared to be parallel. Tartaric precipitation of the wine is made by exploiting the different levels of solubility as a function of temperature. In particular to a reduction of the temperature corresponds to a decrease of the solubility. This process, that is a simple cooling, is extremely complex for the involvement of many chemical species and secondary phenomena. The model was solved through a series of models not coupled, each of which deals with one aspect of the phenomenon. The heating of a pan is a search which was performed in order to emphasize the difficulty of modeling the food matrix. It is a study on different steps, in increasing difficulty leading to the definition of the cooking of a disc of potato on a pan. The first model involves the empty pan on a electric heater, and the error between the experimental data and the simulation is around 4%. In the second has been added to the first model an aluminum disk with known properties, and the error is passed to 4.4%. In the third model, the aluminum disk was replaced with a potato disk, the material chosen for the many known properties, and the error is passed to about 22%. The Icepack is a polystyrene box with inside an hermetic case full of frozen water. The latent heat of fusion of ice keeps the internal temperature of the box close to 0 ° C until complete dissolution of ice. This system has been exploited to reduce the heat of the field by blueberries just after harvesting. The process has been simplified without considering the convection inside the box and assuming at first a simpler geometry than that of real blueberries. A subsequent adaptation of the model has provided for the definition of a geometry more similar to the real one (blueberries simulated by means of beads) with an increase of the accuracy of the results.

Polymer-vesicles systems are peculiar colloidal mixtures of increasing interest, due to their ability to mimic biomembranes, suitability as drug/gene delivery carriers, as well as their employment in formulation of paints, cosmetics, shampoos, etc. Basically, the final purpose concerns a rational design of hydrogels formulation at high water content, based on biocompatible polymeric networks, with tunable characteristics. Thus, six different research branches have been examined: - vesicles characterization and optimization (chapter 2); - vesicles stabilization, thanks to a complexation with b-cyclodextrin (chapter 3); - surfactant-free gel (guar gum and borax – chapter 4); - monosurfactant-driven gel (pluronic F127 and alginate – chapter 5); - vesicles-driven gel-like systems, using two surfactant (chapter 6); - optimization of the mentioned composite systems, with catanionic vesicles and hydrophobically modified cellulose (chapter 7). Catanionic vesicles, in general, are originated by the association of two oppositely charged ionic surfactants in the presence of an excess of one of the two partners, for charge stabilization reasons. The main difference between catanionic vesicles and liposomes, the most famous aggregates of phospholipids, concerns their spontaneous formation. Furthermore, they offer the advantage of an infinite variety of starting materials, commonly cheaper and more reproducible than phospholipids, which gives the possibility of an easy tailoring of the self- assemblies properties. Catanionic vesicles are characterized by a thermally induced transition from multilamellar, polydisperse, spontaneously formed vesicles to unilamellar ones. Mixing a polyelectrolyte (i.e. a ionic charged polymer) with oppositely charged vesicles leads to a wide variety of associations, which depend on vesicle composition, size, concentration and charge, together with polymer flexibility, charge density and effect of the chain substitution. Vesicles complexation with b-cyclodextrins evidenced quite promising results for drug delivery applications, as vesicular nanoreservoirs can be stabilized thanks to a CMC increasing effect of β-cyclodextrin, without occurrence of multiple phases. Experiments lead to conclude that, despite their ‘soft’ nature, catanionic vesicles can successfully resist to the addition of saccharide-based molecules. Thus, preliminary studies concerning both strong and weak hydrogels were performed, as reference systems. The final step involved the inclusion of catanionic vesicles in a cellulose-based polymeric network. Polymeric hydrogels based on non-covalent interactions, compared to chemical-crosslinked ones, are characterized by the absence of harmful, secondary products of the cross-linking reaction and by reversibility, thus these materials can be promptly responsive to external stimuli. These features look interesting in the perspective of biomedical use. Highly diluted polymeric hydrogels can be achieved thanks to several non-covalent cross-linking methods: both electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction cooperate within these systems and their role is due to the specific chemical substances involved. Guar gum is a natural, inexpensive polymer, which is able to produce a highly viscous solution even at low concentrations, and therefore it is used in several fields, such as food, oil recovery and personal care; borax is considered an efficient crosslinker for polymers, bearing hydroxyl groups. The high viscosity of guar gum solutions is due to its high molecular weight (up to 2 million and further), as well as the presence of extensive intermolecular associations (entanglements), thanks to hydrogen bonds. In aqueous solution guar gum assumes a flexible coil conformation. Guar gum, crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, was proposed for colon delivery, and it was also tested as a matrix for oral solid dosage forms. Moreover, a composite hydrogel formed by Pluronic F127 and alginate in water, crossliked using divalent ions, was designed to address an in situ sustained delivery for innovative antiproliferative agents, employed to prevent coronary restenosis. Unfortunately, treated arteries may narrow again due to overproliferation of smooth muscle cells of the blood vessel wall (coronary restenosis); thus a solution can be constituted by antiproliferative agents such as innovative nucleic acid based drugs (NABD). The latter should be protected against enzymatic degradation and released constantly in the coronary artery for several months. So, an appropriate gel system has been designed, in order to line the coronary internal lumen by a drug loaded polymeric film. Later on, a peculiar kind of gel-like systems, made up of natural and renewable polymers, crosslinked thanks to an interactions with ionic charged vesicles, has been tailored for many drug delivery purposes. Currently, biopolymers and their derivatives are on stage as they are biocompatible, eco-friendly and biodegradable. Different types of cationic hydroxyethylcelluloses have been employed, considering they are highly biocompatible, cheap, possess antimicrobial activity, and therefore, widely used in personal care products, such as solutions for contact lenses and hair-care formulations. These peculiar systems provide a non-denaturing environment for novel drugs based on polypeptides and polynucleotides, due to their very high water content.

Nanosized inorganic particles constitute a field of rapidly growing interest and their tailored synthesis is currently subject of intense study. These particles may show unique properties that are not shared by bulk materials and therefore find a palette of innovative applications, e.g., as diagnostic means, or in drug and even gene delivery, offering the advantage over polymer nanoparticles because they are stable, biologically inert, biocompatible and it is easy to introduce functional groups by modification of the surface hydroxyls. Among various synthetic routes the most explored are the ones carried out in bulk, especially the Stöber synthesis, however the final product are mostly polydisperse particles whose size is difficult to control. On the other hand, w/o microemulsion is providing suitable environment for the control of the particle nucleation and growth kinetics, as the nanodroplets of water are nanoreactors for the synthesis. The main advantage is that the procedure does not require extreme conditions of temperature and pressure and the particle size and shape can be controlled simply by controlling the microemulsion parameters where the most important are the water-to-surfactant molar ratio, R, and water-to-TEOS molar ratio, h. The previous studies focused on the latter synthetic route, in base-catalyzed systems, concerned mainly the evolution of silica nanoparticles and the best results were achieved by SAXS. The volume fraction versus time data gave an insight into nucleation and growth and is in agreement with first order kinetics with respect to TEOS concentration. However, we wanted to understand better the environment in which the synthesis takes place and shed light on the evolution of the soluble species, both of the constituents of the microemulsion and of those taking part to reaction. The soluble species present in the reaction mixture that leads to silica nanoparticle production through the base catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and the successive condensation were investigated in situ, under the actual synthesis conditions, by means of 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. The two former nuclei, owing to higher sensitivity and their presence both in the reacting species and in the constituents of the w/o microemulsion (cyclohexane-Igepal CA520 (5 polyoxyethylene iso-octylphenyl ether)-concentrated ammonia solution) afforded insight into the inverse microemulsion and allowed us to assess the kinetic rate of the hydrolysis step. It was verified that the microemulsion microstructure is maintained during the reaction. Special attention was paid to the reaction medium, and an extended assignment of the 1H and 13C resonances of the surfactant head group was performed. These head group signals undergo some changes due to the environmental modifications induced by transition from cyclohexane solution to w/o microemulsion and further to NH3 containing w/o microemulsion. We followed the quantitative evolution of TEOS and EtOH and assessed their preferential distribution in the various environments provided by this, on the mesoscale heterogeneous, reaction medium. Most authors agree that TEOS is localized mainly in the oil however they argue whether EtOH is preferentially in the water-pools or in oil. The clarification was achieved by means of PGSTE NMR since the diffusion coefficients are commonly exploited to characterize microemulsions, to determine the connectivity of the phase and they can be used to obtain the size of water droplets. It was revealed that NH3 exchanges among the inverse micelles diffusing through cyclohexane and confirmed that the preferred localization for ethanol, a byproduct of the reaction, is the bulk oil. Moreover, it was confirmed that TEOS is localized mainly in the oil. The characterization of the final nanoparticles was carried out by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and it was revealed that the final product were monodispersed particles with radius of 20 nm. The synthesis of SiO2 nanoparticles in an acid-catalyzed system is especially interesting from nanotechnological point of view, owing to the different physical nature of silica synthesized under acidic rather than basic conditions, and from an applicative point of view since intended guest species are not always base resistant. Unfortunately, the application of an acid-catalyzed sol-gel process seems less than straightforward. An inverse microemulsion looks like an optimal reaction medium able to limit the growth of silica particles within the nanometer range. However, relatively few studies have been reported to date, and to the best of our knowledge, only one involves the entire process conducted in an inverse microemulsion with a water core that remains stable throughout the course of the reaction. The cyclohexane-Igepal inverse microemulsion, comprehensively established for the synthesis of silica nanoparticles in NH3-catalyzed sol-gel process, was alternatively studied with an acid-catalyzed sol-gel process. TEOS was used as the silica precursor, while two different aqueous phases containing either HNO3 or HCl at two different concentrations, 0.1 and 0.05 M, were examined in the presence and in the absence of NaF, a catalyst of the condensation step. The evolution of the overall reacting system, specifically hydrolysis and polycondensation of reaction intermediates, was monitored in situ by SAXS. No size variation of the inverse micelles was detected throughout the sol-gel process. Conversely, the density of the micellar core increased after a certain time interval, indicating the presence of the polycondensation product. The IR spectra of the reacting mixture were in agreement with such a hypothesis. 1H and 13C NMR measurements provided information on the soluble species, the surfactant, and TEOS. The TEOS consumption was well fitted by means of an exponential decay, suggesting that a first-order kinetics for TEOS transpires in the various systems examined, with rate constants dependent not only on the acid concentration but also on its nature (anion specific effect), on the presence of NaF, and on the amount of water in the core of the inverse micelle. The self-diffusion coefficients, determined by means of PGSTE NMR, proved that a sizable amount of the byproduct ethanol was partitioned inside the inverse micelles. Moreover, the DOSY spectrum contributed to the assignment of the signals of various oligomeric species present in the commercial mixture of Igepal CA520, since the head group, which is a short polyoxyehtylene chain, is somewhat polydisperse. The embedment of Igepal CA520 in an acid-catalyzed inverse microemulsion led to the separation of 1H signals of the various oligomeric components. This ensued from the differential partitioning between the oil and the surface of the inverse micelles, which depends on the ethyleneoxide number (EON) of the head group and the partition degree, between the two environments, for each individual oligomeric species, and afforded further insight into nonionic inverse microemulsions. It was possible to ascertain that the length distribution of the polyethyleneoxide chains is in good agreement with the Poisson distribution theoretically predicted for the polymerization of ethylene oxide. Characterization of the final product was carried out by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and TEM, which concurrently confirmed that the silica isolated from the inverse nonionic microemulsion is not significantly different from the product of a bulk acid-catalyzed sol-gel synthesis. TEM micrographs illustrated particles with diameters smaller than the diameter of the inverse micelles as determined by SAXS, due to a shrinkage effect, in addition to nanostructured aggregates in the range 20-100 nm. The metal doped silica systems are important for optical applications and if the metal ions are finely dispersed on silica matrix very efficient catalysators can be obtained. The synthesis of silica nanoparticles in HCl-catalyzed inverse microemulsion was carried out in the presence of both Cu2+ and Co2+ ions with the aim to get correspondingly doped nanoparticles. The systems were characterized by means of 1H and 13C NMR and the quantitative evolution of TEOS and EtOH was followed. The introduction of metals in the glass matrix strongly influences their optical visible absorption spectrum so the UV-Vis spectroscopy was applied in the study. The isolated nanoparticles were characterized by means of IR and Raman spectroscopy and their size was determined by TEM. It was demonstrated that inverse micelles can be used to produce Co2+ and Cu2+ doped SiO2 nanoparticles with diameter of about 3 and 4 nm, respectively. Spherical particles smaller than the micellar size and, in the case of Cu2+ doped system, larger, irregularly shaped aggregates with diameter up to 1 μm were observed. Lots of darker zones were observed in the TEM images of some larger particles and aggregates containing Cu and may be assigned to Cu metal particles encapsulated in silica matrix. Therefore, cobalt was successfully doped in silica nanoparticles while copper doping seemed less satisfactory.
