Image recognition process could be plagued by many problems including noise, overlap, distortion, errors in the outcomes of segmentation, and impediment of objects within the image. Based on feature selection and combination theory between major extracted features, this study attempts to establish a system that could recognize fish object within the image utilizing texture, anchor points, and statistical measurements. Then, a generic fish classification is executed with the application of an innovative classification evaluation through a meta-heuristic algorithm known as Memetic Algorithm (Genetic Algorithm with Simulated Annealing) with back-propagation algorithm (MA-B Classifier). Here, images of dangerous and non-dangerous fish are recognized. Images of dangerous fish are further recognized as Predatory or Poison fish family, whereas families of non-dangerous fish are classified into garden and food family. A total of 24 fish families were used in testing the proposed prototype, whereby each family encompasses different number of species. The process of classification was successfully undertaken by the proposed prototype, whereby 400 distinct fish images were used in the experimental tests. Of these fish images, 250 were used for training phase while 150 were used for testing phase. The back-propagation algorithm and the proposed MA-B Classifier produced a general accuracy recognition rate of 82.25 and 90% respectively.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the differences in the self-reported allergies to food, especially fish and shellfish, between children and adults, and to study the association between fish consumption and self-reported fish and shellfish allergy (FSA) according to age. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on a survey conducted between April 2014 and December 2016 where children and adults were recruited from the general population of the Fez-Meknes region. The total studied population was 4,046 people. Findings The results show that the self-reported food allergy (FA) of the general population was more frequent among children (28.2 per cent) than adults (16.8 per cent), in which eggs, fish/shellfish, milk and cereals were the most common food cited. With regard to the self-reported FSA, the authors found a prevalence of 9.5 per cent in both children and adults, whereas fish species allergies were more frequent among adults than children. The most common clinical manifestations observed in this population were cutaneous reactions. The study of the association between fish consumption and FSA shows that people who consumed fish had a lower rate of FSA, especially in adults (p < 0.001). Originality/value The self-reported FA of the general population was more pronounced in children than adults. Regarding the self-reported FSA, the authors have shown a prevalence of 9.5 per cent in both children and adults, indicating an important sensitivity of their population to fish and shellfish. The authors have shown that consumption of fish was associated significantly with a lower rate of FSA, especially in adults.

Fish species show astonishing phenotypic and genetic diversity in populations. The delimitation and recognition of fish species are not only of interest to taxonomists but also a requirement in studies of ecology. In this study, the genetic structure of Caranx senegallus collected from three water bodies adjoining the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria was characterized using the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) barcode gene region. Fish samples collected from Qua Iboe estuary, Escravos estuary, and Lagos lagoon were identified morphologically, and muscle tissues were used for DNA barcoding using Fish1 and Fish2 primers. Evolutionary analysis showed the formation of diverging clades in the neighbor-joining tree and indicated the presence of multiple species. The result also revealed that morphological identification was not entirely successful, as the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) prediction confirmed the presence of three specimens initially identified as C. senegallus but genetically matching C. fischeri and Trachinotus goreensis. This observation further emphasized the need for an integrative method for species identification.

Schizothorax richardsonii, commonly called as spotted snow trout, is a coldwater hillstream fish. It is a delicious fish and is important from sportive and commercial point of view. The hillstream modifications comprise presence of irregular folds of skin acting as papillated suckers on the ventral side of the head, closely situated smaller eyes, small gill openings, reduced air bladder and short-stumpy barbells. Body is spotted, slender and sub-cylindrical. It is a phytophagous fish with an adaptation in its mouth to scrap algae from the submerged rocks. Spotted snow trout can spawn naturally as well as artificially by stripping. Sexual dimorphism is vivid during breeding season. It starts spawning after second year. Spawning takes place twice in a year- October/November and March/April. Eggs are of sticky nature. Relative and absolute fecundities have been found about 12,000 and 30,000 eggs/kg respectively. Optimum temperature for incubation is 15-20°C and it takes about 11-18 days for hatching. S. richardsonii has low to moderate vulnerability in Nepal. The population of the fish is decreasing rapidly due to heavy fishing pressure, natural calamity and human disturbances.

Although the Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) task is a widely used experimental method for studying divided attention, tracking objects in the real world usually looks different. For example, in the real world, objects are usually clearly distinguishable from each other and also possess different movement patterns. One such case is tracking groups of creatures, such as tracking fish in an aquarium. We used movies of fish in an aquarium and measured general tracking performance in this task (Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, we compared tracking accuracy within-subjects in fish tracking, tracking typical MOT stimuli, and in a third condition using standard MOT uniform objects which possessed movement patterns similar to the real fish. This third condition was added to further examine the impact of different motion characteristics on tracking performance. Results within a Bayesian framework showed that tracking real fish shares similarities with tracking simple objects in a typical laboratory MOT task. Furthermore, we observed a close relationship between performance in both laboratory MOT tasks (typical and fish-like) and real fish tracking, suggesting that the commonly used laboratory MOT task possesses a good level of ecological validity.

A study was conducted on feeding Vita Fisch combined feed to rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss this year based on a full-system cold-water farm of the Western Fish Company, Peremyshlyan district, Lviv region. The experiments considered the conditions of keeping hydrochemical and fishery indicators: stocking density, temperature, oxygen saturation, and pH of the environment. At the initial stages of the work, fish pools with a water volume of 30 m3 were treated by a one-time application of the probiotic “Sviteco PW” at a dose of 1.0 ml/m3 of water. According to our observations, after a day, the water in the pool became more transparent compared to collections without probiotics, which indicates high results of bioremediation, which maintains the water body at an optimal level. By conducting production tests on this year's troy ear we set ourselves the goal of producing high-quality, high-nutrition combined feed with a low cost and feed ratio, which are well eaten by fish, contribute to the appropriate growth rate, increase fish weight, profitability of aquaculture, prevention of water pollution, reduction of manifestations of conditionally pathogenic microorganisms and safety for the environment. Therefore, we fed this year's raiyear'srout with “Vita Fisc” granular compound feed, which is made from domestic ingredients according to a recipe for young trout, in specialized production by fermentation of the main components of the meal with the introduction of 2.5 % of the premix and probiotic “Sviteco PWC” production pools under aquaculture conditions at the 0.7 ml/kg feed. The ingredients and production of this feed are focused primarily on quality indicators regarding environmental friendliness and environmental protection, taking into account health, physiological state, the ability of fish to carry loads, the quality of food fish, and the profitability of production. Feeding with combined feed was carried out at a temperature of 8 °C while providing 1 % of the feed from the weight of the fish during the day. As a result of the work, trout have a high activity in eating, digestibility, assimilation of compound feed, and a low feed coefficient of 0.95 k. units were established.

Computable general equilibrium models have been a popular tool for policy analysis in recent decades, but rarely applied for fisheries policy and management. This paper presents an inter-temporal computable general equilibrium model with fisheries details. While the model in a full-scale and disaggregate way describes the structure and dynamics of a regional fisheries economy, it further specifies the heterogeneous bottom-up fish producers, such as harvesters, aquaculture and fish-processing firms, and links fisheries with the top–down non-fisheries economic sectors. In addition, the model can be externally linked with fish biological models to consider interactions between economic and biological systems. The model is designed to provide a comprehensive tool for analysis of new fisheries policy in general and to study five European fishery regions in particular. The empirics in the paper evaluate the impact of several important management and policy instruments on the Salerno economy and on recovery of endangered species.

Abstract To reduce the practice of discarding commercially fished organisms, several measures such as a discard ban and extra allowances on top of landings quotas (“catch quota”) have been proposed by the European Commission. However, for their development and successful implementation, an understanding of discard patterns on a European scale is needed. In this study, we present an inter-national synthesis of discard data collected on board commercial, towed-gear equipped vessels operating under six different national flags spanning from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Seas mainly between 2003 and 2008. We considered discarded species of commercial value such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius), and European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). Comparisons of discard per unit effort rates expressed as numbers per hour of fishing revealed that in the Mediterranean Sea minimum size-regulated species such as hake are generally discarded in much lower numbers than elsewhere. For most species examined, variability in discard rates across regions was greater than across fisheries, suggesting that a region-by-region approach to discard reduction would be more relevant. The high uncertainty in discard rate estimates suggests that current sampling regimes should be either expanded or complemented by other data sources, if they are to be used for setting catch quotas.

Fish and commercially available fish oil preparations are rich sources of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the most important fatty acids in fish oil. Following dietary intake, these fatty acids get incorporated into the cell membrane phospholipids throughout the body, especially in the heart and brain. They play an important role in early brain development during infancy, and have also been shown to be of benefit in dementia, depression, and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Early epidemiologic studies show an inverse relationship between fish consumption and the risk of coronary heart disease. This led to the identification of the cardioprotective role of these marine-derived fatty acids. Many experimental studies and some clinical trials have documented the benefits of fish oil supplementation in decreasing the incidence and progression of atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, and stroke. Possible mechanisms include reduction in triglycerides, alteration in membrane fluidity, modulation of cardiac ion channels, and anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, and anti-arrhythmic effects. Fish oil supplements are generally safe, and the risk of toxicity with methylmercury, an environmental toxin found in fish, is minimal. Current guidelines recommend the consumption of either one to two servings of oily fish per week or daily fish oil supplements (around 1 g of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids per day) in adults. However, recent large-scale studies have failed to demonstrate any benefit of fish oil supplements on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality. Here, we review the different trials that evaluated the role of fish oil in cardiovascular diseases.

The study was conducted in Baga Fishing Community of Lake Chad Basin area of Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno North, Jere and Konduga Local Government Area Borno Central in Borno State of Nigeria. The study focused on the approach of traditional and modern fish farmers under the background of socioeconomic attributes for sustainable fish production in Nigeria. Data for the study was collected within the period of thirty-one (31) days from 14th March, to 13th April 2022. Both primary and secondary sources of data were employed, primarily qualitative method of data collection was employed. The study revealed that traditional fish farmers engage in fulltime and part-time fish farming and other agricultural activities unlike the modern fish farmers that engage in fish farming on part-time basis, although both the traditional and the modern fish farmers earns monthly income of more than forty thousand (N40,000) naira. Majority of the traditional fish farmers are married with no contact with extension agents. The traditional fish farmers have higher family sizes. Ninety nine percent of the traditional fish farmers have not undergone formal system of education, with very low infrastructural support and other social services unlike the modern fish farmers. Recommendations were made for the upliftment of the general wellbeing of the fish farmers in the fishing communities for sustainable fish production.

Abstract Products containing effective microorganisms (EMTM) use microorganisms to work in the environment in which they are applied. EMTM is used in many countries worldwide, mainly in agriculture, including in aquaculture, and in environmental protection. Fish farmers use these products to stimulate effective growth and conditioning and as immunity enhancers. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of EMTM Probiotyk (Greenland, Poland) on the development of humoral non-specific resistance in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) in the initial stage of rearing in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The experimental diet was administered for 28 days with 0% (control group), 2%, and 4% EMTM supplementation. The results from the humoral parameters (Lys, TP, Ig) showed no statistical differences. The only statistically significant difference was noted in Cer for the 4% group. Non-specific humoral-mediated immunity in fish plays a key role in defense against damaging factors. Pikeperch is a fish used for restocking open waters, where fish can be subjected to agrotechnical treatments, including EMTM. The results permitted estimating the potential risks of using EMTM in aquaculture.

The article evaluates the fish resources of the North-West of Russia at the end of the XVIII century. For centuries, fish has significantly supplemented the diet of the population of the North-West of Russia. However, until now, historiography does not have complete data on the fish resources of this territory in previous eras. The study was carried out on the basis of Economic notes to the materials of the General Survey of the end of the XVIII century. It analyzes information about the quantitative and species composition of fish in the territory of St. Petersburg and Novgorod provinces. Databases for individual counties were compiled to assess fish resources. For the first time, a complete processing of the information of the Economic Notes for a particular area was carried out, allowing to take into account all available records on the species and number of fish.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) can be caused by a number of etiologies. A rare but potentially life-threatening cause is the consumption of raw fish. This practice is rampant in certain parts of India as well as Asia due to the traditional belief that it can cure a number of chronic diseases such as bronchial asthma, arthritis and diabetes mellitus. A toxin present in fish gallbladder can cause multiorgan failure. Renal involvement is generally in the form of oliguric AKI and in majority of the cases requires renal replacement therapy. Early institution of supportive therapy is essential to prevent mortality. We report the case of a middle-aged diabetic female who consumed raw fish gallbladder in the hope of curing her diabetes and landed up with renal dysfunction requiring dialysis. Renal biopsy showed acute interstitial nephritis which was treated with steroids. She made a full recovery on follow-up.

Efficient cultivation of fish in fish farms is largely determined by the presence of a sufficient number of high-quality fish feed. Currently, the production of fish feed for fish farms remains insufficient. It has been shown that farms often use feed of poor quality, which requires monitoring to ensure efficient fish rearing. Poor quality feed (inferior and unbalanced in composition, as well as substandard) leads to the regular disruption of fish health and requires timely implementation of preventive measures. A complex of general, ecological-technological and veterinarysanitary measures is presented, which make it possible to increase the efficiency of their production and will contribute to successful development of the fish industry.

AbstractObjectiveRegular dietary intake of fish is associated with reduced risk of developing cardiovascular and other chronic diseases, and may improve general well-being. If fish eaters are healthier, they may use fewer health-care resources. The present study aimed to describe the reported intake of fish and fish products in a Danish general population, and to investigate whether fish consumption is associated with generic measures of self-reported health and consumption of health-care resources.DesignData on eating patterns and health status for 3422 Danish adults were obtained by telephone interview in the Funen County Health Survey. These data were merged with individual-level register data on health-care utilisation. Survey respondents were categorised into those consuming fish at least once weekly (fish eaters) and those consuming fish less frequently (non-fish eaters).ResultsPeople who reported eating fish twice monthly or once weekly had significantly better overall self-reported health than those who rarely eat fish, even after adjustment for age, gender, social characteristics and lifestyle factors. Fish eaters did not have significantly lower aggregated health-care costs, although their hospital utilisation was significantly lower than that for non-fish eaters.ConclusionsModerate fish consumption was associated with better self-reported general health even after controlling for possible confounding variables. Overall, fish eaters appeared to use the same amount of health-care resources as non-eaters, although fish eaters used more medicine but were less likely to be admitted to a hospital.
