Wildland fires have always been undesired and dangerous events. The danger includes the destruction of a renewable natural resource, damage of the atmospheric environment through the emissions of pollutant gases, which contribute to the greenhouse effect, and threat to the lives of people living in the areas surrounding the place where fire occurs and of the members of firefighting teams. To cope with all this, it is necessary to know the behaviour of the fire in order to be able to make adequate and proper decisions that will assist activities implemented in fire suppression and prevention. In this context, fire behaviour modelling is utilized to determine these characteristics and to simulate fire propagation in a variety of vegetations, under diverse climatic and topographic conditions. In this context, the aim of the thesis work was to study and describe the fire propagation under different fuel features and boundary conditions with particular attention to terrain configurations where fire propagation may be characterized by abrupt variations in intensity and propagation rate. These areas include double-slope domain and canyons where such a phenomena (commonly identified as eruptive behaviour) occurs without any change in the main factors governing the fire propagation (i.e. atmospheric condition, vegetative fuel, domain topography). This work aims to provide an increase of knowledge in the fire spreading, currently still limited, thanks to the adoption of a physically-based code (WFDS) to model flame propagation; in fact, through the numerical resolution of the fundamental balance equation describing the fire phenomenon, it offers a way to analyze the fire behaviour on a scientific basis. To purse this target different aspects, reported in different chapters, were considered in this work. The first part examines shortly the social, economical and ecological impact of wildland fires on a global scale and for the countries of the Euro–Mediterranean region. The role of fire behaviour modelling as a tool for fire fighting activities and prevention management is put in evidence and discussed. The second part endeavours a short review of the main surface fire spread models developed since 1990 with particular attention to physically-based codes. These models are alternative to empirical or quasi-empirical models, which do not have physical basis and are only statistical in nature or make use of some form of physical framework upon which to base the statistical modelling chosen. A comparison between the most frequently used simulation codes is accomplished and the advantages to consider a physical code - for instance WFDS - rather than an empirical or quasi-empirical one is highlighted. This study traces the development of the East End’s artists’ agglomeration from its origins in 1968 until 1998 through a geographical history of the studio blocks in which those artists have worked. The thesis concentrates on visual artists and the ways in which they have commandeered space in which to work. The thesis argues that the agglomeration may be conceptualised as a complex adaptive system which has evolved in the “edge of chaos” urban environment which arose in the East End as it made the transition from an industrial to a post-industrial district. The core methodology draws largely on ethnographic techniques. Information was gathered from fieldwork, which in this project comprised semi-structured tape-recorded interviews and semi-participant observation in the form of my involvement with a project “ViA” which is developing an information service for the East End’s artists. The qualitative approach is Grounded Theory. Interview transcripts were “coded” for themes, and these themes explored further in subsequent fieldwork, from which further coding was carried out in an iterative process. The themes which emerged were then combined with the archival research and the findings of the social network analysis, forming the foundations of a theoretical model. The quantitative approach is social network analysis at an organisational level, which establishes that the organisational networks are weak, from which it is inferred, in combination with the qualitative evidence, that the significant networks are informal, a sort of “grapevine”. These foundations are developed into a unified theory which draws on existing models concerning the development of such “creative milieux” and then carries these forward using concepts more commonly found in chaos theory and complexity theory such as inherent unpredictability, sensitive dependence on initial conditions, adaptive topographies and fitness landscapes, and emergence. I argue in conclusion that the artists’ agglomeration in the East End is an emergent phenomenon arising from the actions and interactions of individual artists in search of studio space. It can thus be conceptualised as a “complex adaptive system”, capable of learning, growing and spontaneously developing new properties, and finding new directions which cannot be predicted simply by looking at the system’s constituent parts in isolation.

Анотація:

Energy storage using organic phase change materials (PCMs) has attracted significant attention in recent years for renewable energy utilization in building materials. PCMs are capable of storing and releasing a large amount of latent heat during their phase transitions. Paraffin (PA), a eutectic mixture (EM) of capric acid (CA) and lauric acid (LA) and butyl stearate (BS) have been selected as PCMs for this work due to their melting temperatures being close to human comfort temperature, 17 - 28 oC. Plaster (PL) as a building material is chosen due to its ease of construction into plaster boards and also because it is a good insulator against heat and sound. The most significant concern when using an organic PCM is its flammability. This research sets out to determine the effect of using PCMs in PL on the product’s flammability, and whether it is possible to use carrier materials and/or flame retardants to reduce their flammability while maintaining the thermal energy storage properties. Three techniques of incorporation of PCMs into PL are used to address this question. The first one is to immerse PL into hot melted PCMs using a vacuum impregnation method. The PCM however, could easily leak to the surface of PL, particularly when the temperature is above the melting temperature of PCM and also their high flammability evaluated using cone calorimetry was a limiting factor to pursuance of this route. The second method is a direct incorporation technique, i.e. adding PCM directly to PL. With this method also the leakage of PCMs was observed and all samples ignited, though the flammability parameters were less intense than those observed when the immersion method was used. To prevent the leakage of PCM and to improve the consistency of organic PCM with building materials, form-stable PCMs composites are used in the third method. Carrier materials, namely nanoclay (NC), diatomaceous earth (DE), expanded perlite (EP), fly ash (FA) and brick dust (BD) were selected to adsorb and retain the PCMs in their pores. SEM (scanning electron microscope) demonstrated that PCMs were uniformly adsorbed in most of the carrier materials. DSC (differential scanning calorimeter) used to measure the thermal properties of PCMs showed that when these form stable composites were added to PL, they acted as PCMs, although the latent heat values were reduced. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) results demonstrates that the PCMs’ decomposition was not affected by the presence of carrier materials or PL. Cone calorimetry showed that the use of carrier materials had minimal effect on the flammability of PCMs. To evaluate the thermal energy storage performance, a small environmental chamber was used, i.e. a small test “room” of PL with dimensions of 100 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm and thickness 10 mm was set up using 6 pieces of PL. The top board of the cubic room contained PCM, and the temperature differences between the surfaces of control PL and modified PL were recorded during heating and cooling of the room. The results from heating and cooling cycles showed that the PCMs and form stable-PCM composites reduced the peak temperature and delayed the time taken to release the stored energy, the values depending on the percentage of PCMs used. To reduce the flammability of PCMs while maintaining their energy storage performance, two approaches have been undertaken: (i) use of expanded graphite (EG) as a flame retardant carrier- material and (ii) use of a liquid flame-retardant, resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP). The results demonstrated that the flame retardant did not affect the energy storage performance of the PCM. While RDP was not effective on a PA containing PL sample, the flammability of a PL+BS sample was significantly reduced with the addition of EG and RDP.

L'essor de la théorie économique de la firme depuis une trentaine d'années a donné lieu à d'intenses débats sur les origines et les fonctions de la hiérarchie et de l'autorité. Ces discussions sont abordées du point de vue de l'histoire de la pensée économique, sur la période 1968 - 1998. Jusqu'au début des années 1970, le courant dominant ne s'intéressait pas à l'organisation intra-firme. La publication, en 1972, par Alchian et Demsetz d'un article visant à expliquer l'existence de la firme à partir des coûts d'information, apparaît comme une première réponse de l'approche standard au "défi radical". À partir de 1968, l'économie politique radicale, qui est la traduction dans le champ académique du vaste mouvement protestataire anti-hiérarchique ayant traversé la société nord américaine à la fin des années 1960, a cherché à donner sa propre réponse à la question "à quoi servent les patrons ?". Les radicaux américains ont tenté de montrer que la hiérarchie ne vise pas à promouvoir l'efficience de l'organisation mais au contraire le pouvoir de l'employeur. Elle serait un moyen de "diviser pour régner" en vue de dégager de plus grands profits. D'autres auteurs du courant dominant, tels que Arrow et Williamson, s'emploieront à répondre aux radicaux et souligneront les avantages, en terme d'efficience, de l'autorité et de la hiérarchie. Les radicaux se tourneront alors, au début des années 1980, vers la micro-économie standard afin d'élaborer une théorie du pouvoir dans le cadre du paradigme dominant. Enfin, à son tour, la théorie des contrats incomplets répondra implicitement à l'approche radicale du pouvoir, au cours des années 1990, en soutenant que les relations de pouvoir sont organisées dans la firme de manière efficiente.

Today, many Malaysian SMEs are facing problems that hinder the full implementation of computerised accounting information systems (CAIS). These problems are related to human resources incapable of using the systems and organisation’s inability to adopt the technology and align it with the companies’ strategic policy. The purpose of this study is to empirically test the impact of CAIS on information quality, focusing on the transparency aspects of corporate governance and strategic decision making (SDM). Accounting information systems (AIS) with a ‘good fit’ and ‘highly praised’ corporate governance (CG) practices have been shown to lead to good firm performance. While the literature has examined the effects of AIS fit on firm performance, few studies have looked at the link between CAIS, information quality and firm performance. Further, while the impact of strategic decision making and CG on firm performance has been widely studied, the role of AIS in this relationship is less clear. Since AIS forms the backbone of a firm’s business information infrastructure, both strategic decision-making process and corporate governance, particularly the transparency dimension, rely on information derived from the system. Using a resource-based view (RBV) framework, hypothesised relationships among variables of interest were examined based on data collected from 336 small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Results from partial least square (PLS) analysis suggest that effects of AIS on firm performance were partially mediated by information quality, while a full moderation effect was found for other variables on firm performance. The results thus demonstrate the importance of information quality, SDM and AIS to a greater height, prompting SMEs to revisit their policies on AIS, staff training and largely transparency to better improve firm performance. Outcomes of this study contribute to the body of knowledge on AIS, information quality and SMEs, while helping to trigger interest among SMEs on the importance of having reliable accounting software to produce quality reports.

History has lessons for the present; could this be the case for modern counterinsurgency operations in countries resembling Iraq and Afghanistan? This research set out to study three historical counter-insurgencies campaigns in, Malaya (1947-1960), Kenya (1952- 1960) and Rhodesia (1964-1980), with a view to establishing whether or not the Colonial authorities had a substantial advantage over modern forces when combating insurgencies. If this was the case, are these advantages transferable to aid forces involved in modern counterinsurgencies? The research questions focussed on how important the role of the Colonial Forces was to the eventual outcome, examining the principal factors that contributed to their effectiveness? Included in this examination were aspects of strategy, together with an appreciation of the concept of ‘hearts and minds’, tactics and the evolution of counterinsurgency doctrine. A qualitative research design was adopted, using a case study methodology based upon comparative analysis of the data collected. Case studies were constructed for the three conflicts, based around the narratives obtained from a series of semi-structured interviews, with surviving members of the security forces; predominately police and Special Branch. The primary data was coded, using a thematic framework developed from the Literature Review. These themes were then synthesised, analysed and interpreted in response to the research questions related to the perceived problem. Lastly, the findings were compared and contrasted to provide theoretical recommendations and conclusions. The study indicated the significant role played by the Colonial Police Forces, especially Special Branch, which appears to have been instrumental in dominating initiatives against the rebels. Supporting the police, were Colonial army units together with locally recruited indigenous militias in a combined approach to prosecuting an effective counterinsurgency campaign. In addition, this was reinforced by the Colonial Government’s ability to apply draconian legislation in support of the strategic plan, to reinforce the rule of law by the police, coupled with its ability to garner popular support through civil projects, such as schools, clinics and housing. Evolving counter-insurgency doctrine advocated the need to cut off the insurgents from their supplies, by separating them from the general population. Separation was achieved by the forced movement of the population into ‘Protected Villages’ backed up by food control, harsh collective punishments, detention and curfews. Further key beneficial factors for the Colonial Forces included their knowledge of religious customs, culture and language, which enhanced their ability to gather vital intelligence direct from the population; rather than second hand. Analysing the concept of ‘hearts and minds’ since 1947, indicated it was evolving as a strategy and was not operationally as well accepted as it is today. Although often considered a benevolent approach to gaining the support of the population, the research also demonstrated the antithesis of this approach occurred by the insurgents applying power over ‘minds’ of the population though intimidation, terrorism, and physiological control. This psychological control was achieved through sorcery, spirit mediums and the taking of oaths. Ultimately, political solutions not military ones ended the insurgencies. The theoretical recommendations indicated that greater attention needs to be expended in training counter-insurgency forces to empathise with the local population when conducting overseas operations; especially improved knowledge of religious customs, culture and language. The outcome would enhance their capabilities through better population support resulting in superior intelligence.

The materials and techniques used by Francis Bacon were studied through the examination of paintings and the scientific analysis of paint samples. Samples were taken from 21 complete works by Bacon, and from 17 abandoned canvases left in the Artists' studio, most of which had had large sections cut out and removed. The works sampled range in date from c.1945 to c.1990. Materials left in Bacon's studio, now preserved at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane were also studied and 100 items were sampled. Samples were analysed using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (SEM-EDX), Polarised Light Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (PyGCMS) to identify both pigments and binders. A reference collection of synthetic organic pigments was subjected to analysis using FTIR and PyGCMS in order to build up reference data for the identification of these materials in paint samples. Major FTIR peaks are reported for over 120 different pigments, and pyrolysis products from over 70 pigments. PyGCMS was used to analyse many pigments which have not previously been studied in the literature by this method, including diketopyrropyrrole, isoindolinone and perylene types. The existing literature on Bacon's materials and techniques was surveyed, and information from letters, receipts and other documentary sources was compiled. Supports, primings, pigments and media were compared for the paintings studied, revealing a great deal of consistency in materials used over a long working life. Oil paints were used throughout for figures, but a range of different paints are used in backgrounds to create different textural effects, with household emulsion paints found on several works from the 1970s and 80s. The conservation issues arising from Bacon's use of materials are also explored. The results were used to examine a small number of test cases to see how similar materials were to those in Bacon's usual practice. Results showed strong similarities to works examined in the study in some cases.

Denna uppsats behandlar ämnet filöverföring i ett nätverk. Fokus för arbetet har varit att undersöka MTU:ns inverkan på överföringshastigheten vid filöverföringar baserat på vilket protokoll som används och storleken på filerna som överförs. I arbetet har ett flertal experiment genomförts som syftat till att utreda detta, samt att finna vilket protokoll som överlag presterar bäst baserat på omständigheterna för överföringen. Olika filöverföringsprotokoll, fildistributionsprotokoll, MTU:er samt filstorlekar har testats för att finna vad som resulterar i högst överföringshastighet vid filöverföring över ett Ethernetnätverk. Resultaten visar på att en hög MTU uppnår högst överföringshastighet vid överföring av stora filer, men att en standard-MTU fungerar bättre för att överföra mycket små filer.
This report concerns the subject of file transfer. The focal point of the report is to study the effect that the MTU has on the speed of file transfers based on the protocol used and the size of the transferred files. During the course of the work, several experiments have been performed in order to determine this, as well as to find which protocol gives the overall best result based on the circumstances of the file transfers. Various file transfer protocols, file distribution protocols, MTUs and file sizes have been tested in order to find what results in the best file transfer speed over an Ethernet based network. The results show that a high MTU has the best performance when transferring large files, while a standard MTU gives better results for transferring very small files.
