Political and other ideological fluctuations have, generally speaking, had a peripheral impact on the literary portrayal of the Jews. The traces of Shakespeare’s Shylock, the archetypal literary image, can be followed both backward and forward in time, from the New Testament to contemporary fiction. The introvert Finnish culture has had other interesting implications&&There is practically no specific Finnish-Jewish literary archetype. The very few examples that Finnish literature offers, both in the positive and in the negative sense, have no particular national characteristics or individual personality, which would deviate from the general picture. They follow foreign modes, such as Isak, the Jew, in Sam Sihvo’s musical burlesque Jääkärin morsian (The Wife of the Jäger). Other Finnish authors in this category are Maila Talvio, who sympathized with Germany, and Olavi Paavolainen, who was a member of the Finnish modernist group Tulenkantajat (“torch carriers”). The virtually only lengthier descriptions of Finnish Jews can be traced to a pair of opposites, Hilja Haahti and Ester Ståhlberg. Haahti was a popular religious writer, who saw the conversion of the Jews to Christianity as the only solution to the Jewish problem. Ester Ståhlberg’s solution was a realisation of a Zionist homeland in Palestine. Post-WW II literature in Finland lacks a profound reaction against Hitler’s destruction of the Jews in Europe, but there are especially two writers, both Finland-Swedish women, to whom the Jews became an important theme, Mirjam Tuominen and Marianne Alopaeus.

The Finnish school system will transfer to the new Core Curriculum for Basic Education 2014 in 2016. The new curriculum emphasizes integration of subjects. In Finland, mathematics and the mother tongue are the two subjects which are taught the most and therefore play a significant role in every primary teacher’s weekly routine. Unlike English-speaking countries, Finland lacks children’s literature aimed towards use in mathematics teaching. This study aimed to understand teachers’ and teacher-trainees’ points of view on the extent to which they use children’s literature in teaching mathematics in primary school and how to efficiently use children’s literature in teaching mathematics in primary school. This study was a part of an international study entitled ‘Teachers’ beliefs on the integration of children’s literature in primary mathematics learning and teaching: A comparative study’, including universities from England, Hong Kong, Australia, and Finland. The aim was to determine teachers’ beliefs concerning integration of children’s literature into mathematics teaching and to the extent to which this benefits learning. Data collection was conducted via web-based questionnaires translated into Finnish from spring to autumn 2015. Mixed methods data analysis showed that teachers/teacher-trainees do not use children’s literature in mathematics teaching, but they still recognize various ways to implement it into their teaching. Previous studies on the use of literature in mathematics teaching show that children’s literature may provide a meaningful context to develop mathematical skills and foster children’s positive attitudes towards mathematics, as the stories in the literature are presented in an engaging and approachable manner. Keywords: mathematics, children’s literature, teaching

Literature on Finnish art can be sought via the national bibliography and periodicals indexes and a bibliography of Finnish history; these bibliographies are available as databases as well as in printed form and on microfiche. A working party on art libraries is looking into ways of widening bibliographical control of art literature. The publications themselves, and unpublished information, can be found in libraries and archives of several kinds, from the Library of Helsinki University to the libraries and archives of colleges of art and architecture, museums, and artists’ associations. Many of these organisations are active in gathering and publishing information. The Fine Arts Academy of Finland administers the Art Musum of the Ateneum, Finland’s national gallery, and maintains extensive collections of visual resources, exhibition catalogues, periodicals, and press clippings.

There has been a significant growth in volume and disciplines working on Jewish history and culture in Finland for the past fifteen years, yet no systematic overview of scholarly efforts have been available. This article aims to fill this gap. Our focus is on the disciplines of linguistics, cultural studies and history. Our overview covers monographs and articles that have appeared in academic publications since 2000, with a focus on Finland. Consequently we have left out Finnish research on Jews in other parts of the globe from our review. About half of the works introduced in this article have been published in Finnish and will now be briefly introduced to a wider Nordic scholarly community. The article consists of four parts. First we discuss Jewish studies and social history pursued in Finland. We then discuss studies focusing on antisemitism in Finland. The third part introduces the relevant literature on Finland’s role in the Second World War and its responsibility towards the conflict’s Jewish refugees and prisoners of war, after which studies on Finnish history culture and memory politics are presented. The final part presents biographies and general studies about the Jewish community in Finland.

ObjectivesThis study aims to understand the frameworks of Russia's hybrid maneuvers , specifically the strategic use of migration, on Finland's security, as well as that of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The focus is on examining how migration is used by Russia as a geopolitical tool to influence the security landscape of these regions.MethodsEmploying a case study methodology, the analysis draws upon a diverse range of data sources and scholarly literature. It scrutinises Russia's tactical approaches towards Finland and other countries situated on NATO's eastern flank, shedding light on the broader implications for regional stability and security.ResultsThe findings underscore Russia's deployment of migration as a geopolitical lever, exerting significant pressure on national security frameworks. In response, Finland has strengthened its defence mechanisms and sought to enhance international cooperation to effectively counteract these challenges.ConclusionsAfter joining NATO, Finland plays a key role in ensuring the security of the northern flank. Due to its location, this country is compelled to respond in real time to all possible threats that come with the direct proximity of the Russian Federation. Consequently, Finland is, in a sense, a frontline state and other countries should draw from its experience.

This article describes a study that took place in Helsinki, Finland in late 2015. A Canadian education professor conducted individual interviews with Finnish educators: six practicing teachers in Helsinki schools, two education professors at the University of Helsinki, and the advisor to the president of Finland’s teachers’ union. Although all five Nordic countries are known to support the social welfare state, Finland was chosen because it is considered to be the most economically left. The study is an exploration of how Finnish educators consider their role and the role of the school regarding civil society and the commons in Finland. The actual research question for the study was, “How do Finnish educators think about the school’s role in supporting the commons and in fostering social cohesion with immigration?” The nine participants were unanimous in their support of the commons and Finland’s generous social welfare state, apparently the result of a collectivist mentality in Finnish society. However, there appears to be growing social, economic, and political discrimination for immigrants and refugees who look different from White Finns. The six teacher-participants expressed uncertainty around how best to deal with these tensions, and were committed to attempting neutrality in their teaching of these social problems, or perhaps even ignoring them altogether. Despite the small sample set, I believe it represents a cross section of views of educators in contemporary Finland. Recent studies mentioned in the literature review support this position. Some comparisons with similar studies in Canada are briefly mentioned. Keywords: teaching for social justice; comparative education; Finnish education; controversial issues; Nordic social democracy.

AbstractThe mining industries of Sweden and Finland currently face several policy issues around investment, stakeholder involvement, and sustainability. Since the two countries garnered significant attention during the mining boom, research from a social sciences perspective grew significantly. One approach to understanding how these issues in Sweden and Finland compare to international examples is through an analysis of the policy development framework. Looking at three factors—institutions, actors, and process—gives a broad overview of the imminent challenges in both Sweden and Finland and potential lessons from existing research that point to similar problems and their solutions. As the mining operations continue to sit at the center of different values, capable policy is required.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies used by the alcohol industry to influence the reform of the Alcohol Act in Finland during the preparation phase between 2016 and 2017. The study answers the following research question: what strategies were used by the alcohol industry to change the original purpose of the reform on alcohol in Finland? Method: Primary data were collected through 16 expert interviews with experts who had participated in the preparation of the alcohol reform in Finland, while secondary data were collected from prior literature, journal articles and Google databases. Results: The results identified three main political strategies used by the alcohol industry to influence the reform of the law on alcohol in Finland during the preparation phase between 2016 and 2017: “information”, under which the alcohol industry lobbied politicians in Parliament through Members of Parliament of the National Coalition Party due to the close ties between the two; “constituency building”, under which the alcohol industry formed alliances with interest groups in the grocery-retail business in Finland, to advocate for liberalisation of the law, as well as the use of social media – specifically Twitter – to lobby the public; and lastly, “policy substitution” to promote self-regulation. Conclusions: The results suggest that the involvement of the alcohol industry in political decision-making following Finland’s EU membership has given the industry legitimacy and new opportunities to influence alcohol policy, while limiting policies to protect the public from alcohol-related harms. The results may be useful to alcohol policy-makers.

Extensive review of the literature since 1884 on cleft-twin sets yielded 364 cleft-twin sets. Of these, 118 were monozygotic (MZ) and 246 dizygotic (DZ) sets. In addition, Danish material on cleft twins, like our Finnish material, reflects the total number of clefts and cleft twins on a well-defined population during a well-defined time interval. Both sets of material also contain slightly over 100 pairs of twins. The Danish material and the literature review were compared to the Finnish material. The hospital records of all Finnish patients with operated clefts who were born between 1948 and 1987 were reviewed. Information was gathered regarding each patient, his parents, the pregnancy, and his twin or triplet siblings and other siblings. This search produced 105 sets of twins and three sets of triplets with clefts, 15 sets of twins being concordant regarding clefting. This resulted in a total of 120 cleft siblings, and the corrected cleft incidence of 1.72 promille, close to the overall cleft incidence rate in Finland between 1948 and 1975. Twinning was found to be associated neither with an increased nor with a decreased risk of clefting, and clefting could not be seen to increase twinning. Zygosity could be verified in 88 sets of twins; the total number of MZ sets was 17, and of DZ was 71, a 19% MZ rate. Although a higher incidence of clefting in MZ-twin sets has been proposed, no such higher or lower incidence could be found in our material. Recognized syndromes were found in 15 sets (14%), slightly higher than found in a large Finnish study on cleft probands (8.4%). Of these, three sets were monozygotic (MZ), all of them cleft palate (CP) and male sets, whereas eight sets were dizygotic (DZ). All 15 sets were CP only, with no one set with cleft lip and palate [CL(P)]. In our total Finnish-twin material of 105 sets, we found the CL(P)/CP ratio to be 39/66 (37%/63%). In all of the 120 affected siblings, the ratio was 35%/65%. The very high rate of 63% of CP twins is about two to three times higher than that reported in the literature of 364 sets where the CP ratio is 23%; compared to the Danish material with a CP ratio of 17%, it is almost four-fold. The overall CP rate in all clefts (not restricted to twins)in Finland compared to the rate In our neighboring Scandinavian countries was very much in line with this very big difference seen in the CP rate In our twin material. The CL(P) Incidence in our Finnish material is 0.61 promille and the CP incidence 1.11 promille. For MZCL(P), the incidence was 0.38 promilie; for MZCP, 0.91 promille; for DZCL(P), 0.52 promille, and for DZCP, 0.99 promille. Compared to the Danish figures, both the MZCP and DZCP incidence figures are nearly four-fold, with the MZCL(P) somewhat lower, and DZCL(P) less than half that number. The sex distribution of all cleft patients in our material was 44% male/56% female. Both in the Danish material and in the literature, it was the reverse. This difference is probably due mostly to the higher ratio of CP in the Finnish material. The CP group has a higher proportion of females in all these materials. The concordance (C) of the whole Finnish-twin material is 14%, compared to 16.5% reported in the literature and 8% for the Danish twins. The concordance for CL(P) In our material is many times lower (2.6%) than in the literature (17.1%) and In the Danish material (8%). In the Finnish twins, the C for CP is higher (17%) than that for the Danish (6%) and for the literature cleft-twin populations (14.3%). This is also true for the MZ and DZ subgroups. The heritability index (H) in CL(P) is lower for the Finns (17%) than for the Danish (45%) and for the literature materials (43%), and higher for CP (Finns 49%, Danish 33%, literature 36%). All of these data strongly suggest the quite different genetic behavior of both CL(P) and CP in Finland, with a much lower genetic component in the CL(P) and a higher In the CP.

Finnish students have been among the world’s strongest performers on standardized assessments throughout the past decade. Consequently, educators and scholars are interested in how to explain such results. A common explanation, as seen on social media, is that Finnish educators do not regularly assess their students. This study explores educators’ views on assessment practices in Finnish education. First, the literature on assessment practices in Finland is reviewed. Then, using narrative inquiry as a research method, Finnish educators’ views on assessment practices are examined. The research participants were two professors, two novice teachers, and two pre-service teachers, all connected to the same prominent university-based primary teacher education program in Finland. The narratives of the six participants in connection with assessment in Finland’s education system highlight the variance in opinions about international standardized assessments as well as assessment practices at the classroom and school levels. Further, participants’ narratives reveal the influence students’ socioeconomic status may have on teachers’ assessment practices.

The present study aimed at assessing the invasion of alien weed species in Finland based on a review of their occurrence in the Finnish weed flora. The evaluation was conducted for the three phases of the invasion process, i.e. introduction, naturalization and invasion. The literature review revealed that 815 alien weed species occur in Finland of which 314 are regarded as naturalized. Based on their occurrence in different climate zones, the risk of naturalization of new harmful alien weed species was deemed low for those species not currently found in Finland, but higher for species occurring as casual aliens in Finland. In the latter group, 10 species of concern were detected. Exploration of the distribution patterns of naturalized species within Finland revealed species occupancy to be dependent on the residence time of the species. Established neophytes can be expected to extend their ranges and to increase occupation of agricultural habitats in the future.;

This article contributes to the growing literature on gender and physics by employing the concept of gendering processes to the study of physics departments in Finland. We show that gendering processes can have paradoxical and ambiguous outcomes for women. In order to understand gendering processes, we analysed two kinds of data: gender equality policies in academic organizations and interview data with 36 physicists, both male and female. On the basis of the interview data we argue that physics departments are gendered in the dimensions of symbols and images, interaction, and mental constructs. We also argue that there are tensions between policies and gendering processes in physics departments because policies do not fully succeed in identifying the processes that maintain inequalities between female and male physicists. The tensions explain why gendering processes have paradoxical and ambiguous outcomes.

Contemporary Slovene literature from 1950 to the present has been deeply influenced, above all, by two major factors: first, its own tradition through a century-long development, and secondly, the socio-political position of literature immediately after the Second World War. As concerns tradition, it should be noted that the beginning of literature in the Slovene language coincided with the arrival of Protestantism in the sixteenth century; only sparse religious records are known from previous centuries. This literature remained within the framework of ecclesiastical needs until the late eighteenth century, similar to those found in Lithuania, Estonia or Finland. At the end of the eighteenth century, Slovene literature began to resemble the Central European literature typical of Croatia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland. This is not only evident in the same literary trends and genres, but above all in the fact that national ideology as well as social and moral ideas acquired a significant role in its concepts.

In this article, we discuss language- and culture-specific elements in versions of Evas klass/Eevan luokka (1917), a Finnish youth literature classic by Kersti Bergroth (1886–1975), a self-translator who wrote the Finland-Swedish and Finnish versions under the pseudonym of Mary Marck. The novel has also been translated into Norwegian (Eva’s klasse, 1933) by Anne Marie Worm-Müller. Drawing on translation theory and cultural semiotics, we explore the extent to which the three versions diverge from one another in terms of global and local translation strategies. The analysis, which focus on the linguistic identity and the names of the characters, geographical names, cultural traits, and quotations of J.L. Runeberg’s poetry, shows differences between the Finland-Swedish and the Finnish version (intracultural translation) and the Finland-Swedish and the Norwegian version (intercultural translation). When translating her own text, Bergroth uses official equivalents and other source-oriented strategies, as both the Finland-Swedish version and the Finnish version are primarily intended for readers living in Finland, where both the Finnish and the Finland-Swedish culture share a multitude of similarities notwithstanding the two different languages. The Norwegian translator, however, often uses target-oriented strategies, i.e., generalizations, substitutions, and omissions that are explainable by the longer cultural distance between Norway and Finland.

Like other organisations, cooperatives encounter internal disputes in their lifecycle. The article examines the mechanisms available for cooperatives to resolve internal conflicts in the context of Finnish legislation and court practice. While the share of cooperatives is significant in Finland’s economy, the legal literature on cooperative dispute resolution is sparse. The article focuses on the Cooperative Act of 2013 dispute resolution provisions. The article traces the historical development of cooperative dispute resolution provisions in Finnish legislation and scrutinises how cooperative bylaws handle dispute resolution. While the 2013 Cooperative Act expanded the use of arbitration for resolving cooperative disputes, there remains a gap in understanding the practical implications due to the shortage of reported cases. The study reveals the emphasis the Cooperative Act puts on resolving cooperative disputes in arbitration and the preference for arbitration by cooperatives with a substantial market share.Received: 28 April 2023 Accepted: 10 December 2023

After decades of globalization and outsourcing the idea of “bringing manufacturing back home” and the twin concepts of backshoring and nearshoring have received much attention in recent years. Recent positive stories from the Finnish manufacturing industry suggests Finland as an attractive target for nearshoring, yet little to none has hitherto been made of this connection. This article (i.) examines recent relocation literature with a focus on nearshoring and manufacturing in high-cost environments, (ii.) explores the location advantage of Finland, (iii.) analyses cases of recent manufacturing developments in Finland within this context as single incidents or signals of change, and (iv.) discusses this development within the perspective of Industry 4.0.

The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased availability of English-language books facilitated the acquiring and honing of translators' language skills and gradually diminished the need for indirect translating. Book history and translation studies meet here in an examination of the role of the Collection in Finnish translators' work.

Simultaneously Elsewhere. Imagining Migrancy in Early 20th Century Finnish Literature The article discusses the functions of early 20th century Finnish language fiction on FinnishAmerican migrancy. The author suggests that fiction depicting migrant life served its contemporary readership as a utopic ”elsewhere” where mobility, gender and agency could be articulated differently from what could be done in literature depicting life in Finland. The argument is developed through readings of three reoccurring tropes articulating migrant subjectivity in fiction: the family (or, rather, its absence), the tramp and the urban housemaid. From a transnational perspective, the article engages with, even if respectfully distances itself from, earlier research on FinnishAmerican migrant literature with its strong emphasis on reading fiction as representing reallife migrant. Instead, it is proposed that it might be fruitful to approach migrant literature and Finnish literature depicting life in Finland as a diffuse whole, where ideological investments are to an extent bound to locations but not explained causally by them.

The objective was to evaluate master level nurse education in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in relation to educational convergence and the professional status of nurses. A qualitative literature review was conducted and during 2009 to 2012, official databases, concerning European and national educational initiatives, were searched to identify educational convergence in specific in nurse education. In the 4 Scandinavian countries, nursing education is structured on higher educational levels in accordance with the Bologna Process and Tuning Project frameworks. However, national legacies are dominant. In Denmark and Finland, segregation between the academia and the professional is conspicuous overall, whereas in Norway and Sweden, integrative initiatives are significant. Educational convergence has not been obtained. Obstacles are due to dual structures, differences in academic levels, and division of tasks in specific in master’s level higher education.

Diastrophic dysplasia (DTD) is a rare osteochondrodysplasia characterized by short-limbed short stature and joint dysplasia. DTD is caused by mutations in SLC26A2 and is particularly common in the Finnish population. However, the disease incidence in Finland and clinical features in affected individuals have not been recently explored. This registry-based study aimed to investigate the current incidence of DTD in Finland, characterize the national cohort of pediatric subjects with DTD and review the disease-related literature. Subjects with SLC26A2-related skeletal dysplasia, born between 2000 and 2020, were identified from the Skeletal dysplasia registry and from hospital patient registry and their clinical and molecular data were reviewed. Fourteen subjects were identified. Twelve of them were phenotypically classified as DTD and two, as recessive multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (rMED). From the subjects with available genetic data, 75% (9/12) were homozygous for the Finnish founder mutation c.-26+2T>C. Two subjects with rMED phenotype were compound heterozygous for p.Arg279Trp and p.Thr512Lys variants. The variable phenotypes in our cohort highlight the wide spectrum of clinical features, ranging from a very severe form of DTD to milder forms of DTD and rMED. The incidence of DTD in Finland has significantly decreased over the past decades, most likely due to increased prenatal diagnostics.

The research in the area of corporate environmental accounting and reporting in the context of Finland is scarce. This paper outlines the studies conducted to date on Finnish firms’ environmental reporting practices with a view to discovering research gaps in the literature concerning environmental accounting and reporting in the Finnish context. The paper adds to the existing literature by identifying research gaps such as the antiquity of datasets used in the previous studies, the risk of failure to generalize the findings of the prior investigations and most importantly the research negligence towards the impact of Finnish firms’ activities and operations on climate change and changes in biodiversity. Hence, the paper has implications for researchers, who could address the identified void in future research and thereby advance further the literature concerned with environmental accounting and reporting. Policy makers could also benefit from this paper as its findings could help them formulate necessary disclosure requirements for the improvement of corporate environmental reporting practices in Finland. This paper focused only on the studies on Finnish firms and thereby limited the scope for any comparison between Finland and other Nordic countries as far as research on environmental reporting practices is concerned; this is the principal limitation of this study.

Abstract:This article examines current trends and prospects in Finnish healthcare literature and discussion. The Finnish healthcare system was long considered to manifest an equal, universal, and solidaristic welfare scheme. However, recent data reveals structural inequalities in access to healthcare that result in health differences among socioeconomic groups. The political will aims at tackling these inequalities, but the ideological trend toward responsibilization of the individual taking place across political spheres elsewhere in Europe creates potential challenges to this goal. The applications of this trend have a theoretical background in the responsibility-sensitive egalitarian—or luck egalitarian—tradition. The theory, which is unfit for real-life policy applications, has explicit appeal in considerations aiming at the responsibilization of the individual within the healthcare sector. It remains to be seen in which direction the Finnish welfare schemes will continue to develop.

ABSTRACT The article describes the presence of Finland in the consciousness of Poles (since 14th-16th century) as well as the presence of the Finnish literature on the Polish publishing market since 1860s until today. Finnish literature became broadly known in Europe only in 1835, when the first edition of the national epic Kalevala appeared and directed European intelligentsia’s attention to Finnish nation and its struggle for their own national identity. Selection of Finnish literary works (including those written in Swedish) which were translated in that times into Polish proves that the Polish publishers and translators were consciously looking for similarities between the situation of Poland and Finland which both were under the reign of tsarist Russia. The rich Finnish literature of the next decades fully shows the difficult process of becoming a Finn and finding one’s own identity under new political and social conditions.

The paper deals with the Finnish translations from the Komi literature and folklore, its purpose is to review the available Finnish publications from the Komi-Zyryan and Komi-Permyak literatures, as well as to identify some common features of the Komi-Finnish translation activity. It is established that Komi folklore was first published in the Finnish language in the 1880s-1890s, and fiction - in the 1920s, however, the main part of the available translations date back to the period after the 1980s. The increase in the intensity of mutual translation activities among the Finno-Ugric peoples since the 1990s is connected with the establishment and development of contacts in the literary sphere: the Association of Finno-Ugric literatures appears, writers' congresses are regularly held. One of the goals of such cooperation is mutual acquaintance with literary creativity, which is carried out primarily through literary translation. About four hundred of the Komi-Zyryan and Komi-Permyak works are presented in Finnish. Translations into Finnish are carried out not only in Finland, but also in Karelia, where the Finnish language is used as a literary language. Translations made in Finland are characterized by an exceptional dominance of poetry, with intermediary language used very rarely, transcriptions are made directly from the original language. In Karelia there is interest in the Komi prose, but translators work using the Russian language.
