Повний текст джерелаs learning activities according to his/her respective profile. The adaptive intelligent learning management systems (AILMS) help a wide range of students to achieve their learning goals effectively by delivering knowledge in an adaptive or individualized style through online learning settings. This study presents a multi-agent system, called MODA, developed to provide adaptiveness in learning management systems (LMS). A conceptual framework for adaptive learning systems is proposed for this purpose. The framework is based on the idea that adaptiveness is the best matching between the learner profile and the course content profile. The learning styles of learners and the content type of learning material are used to match the learner to the most suitable content. The thesis covers the pedagogical framework applied in MODA, the technical and multi-agent architectures of MODA, the TCP-IP based protocol providing communication between MODA and LMS, and a sample application of the system to an open source learning management system, OLAT. The study also discusses the possibilities of future interests.

The system was designed and implemented to help teachers to generate course material for online tutoring and to help the students to navigate through the course material according to their knowledge level. The system integrates many new technologies and provides individualized learning for students which is one of the most efficient ways for learning. How well the student has learned the course material is tested immediately after each smallest learning unit by end-of-section tests and the knowledge level of the student is derived from the answers given to these tests. This knowledge level is used to build a user model. This thesis describes how this user model is used for navigational support for students while studying on the course material.

Повний текст джерелаENGLISH ABSTRACT: Technikon Southern Africa defined its role as distance learning institution with the implementation of the Integrated Learner Centred Distance Learning (ILCDE) model. This model implied the establishment of regional offices as well as the implementation of a tutor system. The tutor system implied the appointment of tutors at the different regional offices. In an attempt to take the distance out of distance learning the following functions of tutors were identified: • Telephone tutoring • Conducting contact sessions • Assessing assignments The focal point of this study was tutor development within a flexible learning system as no structured learning programmes for tutors exist at TSA. The purpose was to investigate and analyse the learning needs of tutors in a flexible learning system. Various critical questions stimulated this study. However, the following three questions formed the basis of this study: • What is the role of training and development in the tutor system? • Do tutors have a need for continuing professional learning programmes? If so, what . should the nature of such learning programmes be? • What should the criteria be to evaluate and monitor the development oftutors? A qualitative research approach was followed and the data was obtained by means of interviews and participative observation sessions. The subjects of the study were the tutors of the Subject Group: Management Leadership: Policing appointed for the registration period May 1998 - May 1999. One of the conclusions of the study was that the following processes regarding the tutor system need attention: • Recruitment and selection • Interviewing and appointment • Job descriptions • Orientation, training and development programmes • Evaluation and monitoring programmes • Role clarification • Marketing strategy The following recommendations were formulated: • A guide for the recruitment and appointment processes of its tutors should be compiled. • An assessment of the support needs of learners should be performed. • Establishing a continuing professional learning unit should be considered. • A proposal for learning interventions for continuing professional learning should be developed.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: DIE ROL VAN TUTORONTWIKKELING IN 'N PLOOffiARE LEERSTELSEL Die Technikon Suider-Afrika het sy rol as afstandsonderriginstansie gedefinieer toe die Geïntegreerde Leergesentreerde Afstandsonderrigmodel (lLeD£) geïmplementeer is. Hierdie model het die daarstelling van streekkantore asook die implementering van 'n tutorstelsel veronderstel. Die tutorstelsel het die aanstelling van tutors by die onderskeie streekkantore tot gevolg gehad. Om die afstand uit afstandsonderrig te haal, is die volgende drie funksies van tutors geïdentifiseer: • Telefoonbegeleiding • Fasilitering van kontaksessies • Assessering van werkopdragte Die fokuspunt van hierdie studie was tutorontwikkeling binne 'n plooibare leerstelsel, aangesien geen gestruktureerde leerprogramme vir tutors by TSA bestaan nie. Die doel was om die leerbehoeftes van tutors in so 'n plooibare leerstelsel te ondersoek en te ontleed. Verskeie kritiese vrae het aanvanklik hierdie studie gestimuleer, maar die volgende drie vrae het die basis van die studie gevorm: • Wat is die rol van opleiding en ontwikkeling in die tutorstelsel? • Is daar 'n behoefte aan deurlopende professionele leerprogramme? Indien ja, wat behoort die aard van die programme te wees? • Wat behoort die kriteria te wees om die ontwikkeling van tutors te evalueer en te monitor? 'n Kwalitatiewe navorsingsbenadering IS gevolg en die data IS deur middel van onderhoudvoering en deelnemende waarnemingsessies ingesamel. Die tutors wat aangestel is vir die registrasietydperk Mei 1998 - Mei 1999, van die Vakgroep: Bestuursleierskap: Polisiëring is vir die studie gebruik. Een van die gevolgtrekkings van die studie IS dat die volgende prosesse lil die daarstelling van die tutorstelsel aandag vereis: • Werwing en keuring • Onderhoudvoering en aanstelling • Posbeskrywings • Oriënterings-, opleidings- en ontwikkelingsprogramme • Evaluerings- en moniteringsprogramme • Roluitklaring • Bemarking Die volgende aanbevelings is geformuleer: • 'n Handleiding vir die werwing en keuring van tutors behoort saamgestel te word. • 'n Behoeftebepaling van die ondersteuningsbehoeftes van die leerders behoort gedoen te word. • Die vestiging van 'n deurlopende professionele leereenheid behoort oorweeg te word. • 'n Voorstel vir leerintervensies vir personeelontwikkeling behoort ontwikkel te word.

Повний текст джерелаThis work focuses on collaborative learning and how it canbe applied and supported in distance education. Previous workindi-cates that distance learners experience more loneliness,technical problems and lack of stimulation than face-to-facelearners do. Collaboration with peers may improve the feelingof connectedness and engagement. However, collaborativelearning is not the answer to all problems in distanceeducation--and it creates new problems. The present workexplores problems, opportunities and processes whencollaborative learning is introduced in distance education--andsuggests solutions.
Related research on distance education andcomputer-supported collaborative learning is reviewed andrelated to own research. The different roles of information andcommunication technology in these areas are described.
Six own research papers are reviewed and integrated. Threeof them explore university courses on computer use in society.Learners interacted mainly through a forum system, i.e. asystem for text-based, asynchronous electronic conferences anddiscussions. The special character offorum communication hadan impact on communication and collaboration processes. Onepaper summarizes these results and deduces a first list of tipsto teachers and systems designers, aiming to reduce problemsand take advantage of collabo-rative-learningopportunities.
One paper, a report to the Swedish School Board, provides anoverview of research on distance education, withrecommendations for use in secondary schools.
To get a broader picture of distance-education learners andtheir special situation and interests, a study was conducted inAustralia. Most of the learners were secondary-school students,living far away from towns. Communication was normallyrestricted to mail, radio and telephone. Opportunities forcollaboration between peers were rare, and correspondencetraditions and the lack of technological infrastructure weredelaying changes. However, a development towards morecollaborative learning had started.
Empirical data were gathered ethnographically in naturalcourse settings. Results were analysed using 'activity theory'as a framework.
The main contribution of this work is a description of howthree groups of learning processes develop and interact: (a) ofcontent, (b) of communication, and (c) of collaboration. Theyform the spiralling model of a"Triple Helix". Finally, detailed advice is given aschecklists to organisations, teachers, learners and systemdesigners.

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis critically analyzes the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) within higher education and examines SCORM's limitations within a realistic application environment versus within a theoretical/conceptual platform. The thesis also examines environments better suited for implementation of SCORM technology. In addressing the research questions, it was discovered that from the current standards set forth by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), SCORM is not well suited for higher education. SCORM technology will prove of greater utility within the Navy Training environment than in higher education. In their effort to share information, higher education institutions would benefit more from a Content Management System in conjunction with a Learning Management System. Subsequent chapters addressed the limitations of SCORM, provided a comparison of the applicability of SCORM within the separate domains of naval Education and Training, and provided a prototype of a Content Management System for institutions of higher learning.

Повний текст джерелаSeveral universities offer distance education, which means that they use some type of web-based tool. The tool, known as a Learning Management System (LMS), acts as a support for learning, teaching, administrating and communicating through different features. The LMS is the connection between teacher and student, a platform used to distribute course material and to communicate. Previous research shows that there is a lack of knowledge among teachers on how to plan and implement a distance education with the support of a LMS. The knowledge about LMS usage in practice at higher education are low and needs to be researched further. The study examines the existing features of a LMS that teachers choose to use, to plan and implement a distance education course. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of which strategies teachers use when planning and implementing a distance learning course with the support of a LMS existing features. The study used a qualitative interpretive approach in which the data collection method, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Seven teachers at Halmstad interviewed individually. To analyze the empirical data a codebook was created with literature oriented code word from a technological pedagogical perspective. The answer to the study's question is that teachers mainly use three different strategies to plan and implement a distance learning course with the support of a LMS.

Повний текст джерелаIntroduction / Objectives: Health evaluation in Brazil comes in a context in which processes are still incipient, not incorporated to practices and with a prescriptive, bureaucratic character. Furthermore, the existing evaluation tools do not constitute additional support to decision-making process or training of people involved. This thesis aims to analyze the conceptions of evaluation present in assessment practices during the training of individuals of interest and interested in the institutionalization of health evaluation in the Unified Health System. Methodology: This thesis will be presented in the form of four manuscripts and chapter of a book. The later describes the reflection on health evaluation in the context of primary care, with reference to the provision of a distance learning specialization course to quality evaluators and the supervisors who carried out the external evaluation of PMAQ-AB. The second manuscript reviews the legal framework that regulates the health system and implements the PMAQ-AB as institutionalization proposition related to the evaluation theory focused on value. The third manuscript analyzes the profile of students of the referred specialization course, analyzing the characteristics of external evaluators trained in six states of Brazil. The fourth manuscript reviews the performance of students in knowledge related to the contents developed during the course. The fifth manuscript presents the implementation of educational assessment within an innovative graduation course in dentistry. Results: The book chapter reports on the curriculum proposal and ponders the challenges faced by the course. The articles present an assessment of the institutionalization of Health Evaluation in the National Health System that covers the laws governing the system from the perspective of authors who focus their studies on the value, the profile description and analysis of student performance in the training of evaluators for development of assessment practices within an program of improvement of access and quality and the use of formative assessment in the training of health professionals in an Undergraduate System. Conclusion: We conclude that the path taken by the Unified Health System has shown a trend and a need for qualification of assessment practices at all levels. Evaluation based on an emancipatory perspective, develop a more participatory relationship and a less punitive view of assessment practices which may result in better implementation of the changes inherent in the processes related to the assessment which is able to transform services and therefore the formation of health professionals. After all, evaluation is an investment in people and their development.

This dissertation discusses the use of the social network site Facebook as a virtual environment for interaction and learning in Distance Education (DE). Its main objective is to contribute to the educational process of DE. As a conceptual reference, this work builds on the three main types of interaction in DE proposed by Michael Moore (Moore; Kearsley, 2001): student-instructor, student-student, and student-content. As methodology, it performs a bibliographic review of national and international surveys comparing the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Blackboard and Moodle, with the use of Facebook in DE. It also analyzes the results of the literature and brings together the data systematically, thereby facilitating future research on the topic. In addition, it synthesizes and describes the results of the review in order to ascertain whether the use of Facebook may or may not enhance education as an interaction and learning environment. It concludes that the use of Facebook as an interaction environment is significantly well accepted by students, particularly on the forms of student-instructor and student-student interaction, while LMS still contribute adequately to the individualized study, or student-content interaction. So, social networking sites can significantly contribute to the teaching of DE
Esta dissertação discute o uso do site de rede social Facebook como ambiente virtual de interação e aprendizagem em Educação a Distância (EaD). Seu objetivo principal é contribuir com o processo pedagógico da EaD. Como referência conceitual, este trabalho utiliza os três tipos principais de interação em EaD propostos por Michael Moore (MOORE; KEARSLEY, 2001): aluno-professor, aluno-aluno e aluno-conteúdo. Como metodologia, realiza uma revisão bibliográfica de pesquisas nacionais e internacionais que comparam o uso de Ambientes Virtuais de Aprendizagem (AVAs), como Blackboard e Moodle, com o uso do Facebook em EaD. Analisa ainda os resultados da literatura e aglutina os dados de forma sistemática, facilitando, assim, futuras pesquisas sobre o tema. Além disso, sintetiza e descreve os resultados obtidos na revisão, visando averiguar se o uso do Facebook pode ou não favorecer a educação como um ambiente de interação e aprendizagem. Conclui que a utilização do Facebook como ambiente de interação é significativamente bem aceita pelos discentes, especialmente para as formas de interação aluno-professor e aluno-aluno, enquanto os AVAs seguem atendendo suficientemente o estudo individualizado, ou a interação aluno-conteúdo. Assim, sites de rede social podem contribuir significativamente com a pedagogia da EaD

To engage authorities to set an example they're required tohave an environmental management system. One of the universities environmentalaspects is student travel. This report presents the result from a survey of students' travelhabits where the carbon dioxide emission per year from students' travel to hometown,other study places and university have been calculated. The aim is to give theuniversities material to assess if the students' travel is a significant environmentalaspect. The carbon dioxide emission from a student that moved to the area to study wasmost caused by the travel to the hometown wich had a far distance and was frequentlydone. The carbon dioxide emission from a student that already lived in the area and adistance student was most caused by trips to the university wich for the student thatlived in the area was done frequently and had a short distance and for the distancestudent was done rarely with a far distance. When students that moved to the areatraveled to other study places and the university and when distance students traveled toother study places the carbon dioxide emission in the winter differed from the otherseasons wich shows that fewer students walked/biked in the winter. The students travelshould be seen as a significant environmental aspect in the universities environmentalwork. Environmental objectives and actions should be based on relevance andpossibility for the university.
