Thirty years after the legalization of contraception in France (Neuwirth Law of December 28th 1967), the emergency contraception was allowed to sale (1998). The Law promulgated in 2001 about abortion and contraception lets one buy emergency contraception in chemist' s shop without prescription. It also allows minors to get free contraception without parental advisory. As a post-coital contraception, it prevents women from pregnancy in case of not well or unprotected sexual intercourse. Based on the accounts of 64 women between 15 and 25 years old, this sociology thesis deals with sanitary, relational and identity questions linked with the use of contraceptive. It also raises the issue of the of distinct abilities about sexual control: protection for men, and contraception for women. Through emergency contraception we will study the forms of the partner's investment and we will see that one's implication can reveal the intensity of the relationship. From the protection habits and strategies (imaginary and identity) applied by these young women, this research will ify to highlight the overlapping of emotive and sexual biographies to understand the contraceptive habits

Analysis of existing studies on labour supply of young women revells that neither schooling nor family status fully explain their activity patterns. Studies based on either variable neglect the time element in women's participation. Women with similar educational attainments and family comitments may make different choices because of differences in their social and family background. According to the argument of this thesis, schooling has to be considered in relation to the woman's social background and family status serves only to reinforce existing participation propensities, but does not act as a counterrailing influence against participation, is thus set in the overall context of social reproduction. To investigate this, the woman's socio-educational path is followed, which by taking account of both labour market and family pressures enables one to avoid the conventional opposition of these two forces. Moreover, this method revells a process which explains activity patterns in terms of an integrated model instead of as separate additive variables

This thesis examines the cinema which was produced in France during the Occupation (1940-1944) through the young actors and actresses, commonly referred to as romantic leads, it features. Using the theories and methods initiated by gender studies, cultural studies and star studies as by cultural history, this work intends to show how those figures of young actors and actresses reflect the sociocultural context of the Occupation, from the point of view of gender and generation relations. Using five case studies of actors and actresses who are representative of the renewal of youth figures in the films produced at the time (Marie Déa, Odette Joyeux, Micheline Presle, Madeleine Sologne and Jean Marais), this work shows that those romantic leads combine reassuring and traditional features with seditious, modern features. Thanks to this union of contradictory characteristics, they met a large and diverse audience whose interests, concerns and political sensitivities differed, at a period when the ideological control was strict, especially over young people and women, but when gender and generation hierarchic relations were challenged. This work is based on the analysis of the films, but also on their critical reception and on the way the popular press of the time constructed the image of the actors and actresses

The object of this paper is to show how, on an individual and collective level, young French women of Moroccan origin holding university degrees, and female Moroccan students who have come to France to finalize their university curriculum, have been integrated into their respective communities and existing social groups. They perceive their qualifications not only as a means of gradually emancipating themselves from their original communities to gain a better knowledge of themselves and a stronger affirmation of their individualities, but also as a way of increasing their opportunities in life. In that sense, they may lead their parents into adjusting their cultural practices and, in fine, achieve a (re)configuration of the family structure. That is why the references to the groups they belong to are ambivalent and should be apprehended from a dialectical perspective encompassing the individual and the collective. This study, led with that comprehensive approach in mind, is based on a qualitative investigation seen from a sociological and anthropological point of view. An in-depth study has been privileged because it is the only way of grasping the complex interaction involved in mixed environments. As for our sociological reasoning, it is based on the observation of both family framework and social surroundings, and addresses the rupture/change issues between generations, thus avoiding the paradigmatic opposition between tradition and modernity

Thirty five years have passed since the end of the Vietnam War, however, for the women who volunteered, the combat continues. A combat for a decent life. Upon their return, in order to integrate into a normal life, they had to go through many trials: firstly those related to their health conditions, then financial, social and family difficulties. Even though the Vietnamese State adopted measures in their favour, they turned out to be insufficient in improving their lives and compensating their suffering. They thus feel as though they have gone unrecognized. Scientific results of this Thesis have shown their altruist choice of committal to the war was made upon a "rational" basis. Despite certain cases of "forced" involvement, the majority of them were determined to leave out of personal interest: such as the vengeance of loved ones, to obey to the revolutionary family, the taste for a uniform role, fear of being outcast for not participating, a desire for independence, an escape from poverty, wanting to leave one man at home to take care of the ancestors and enrolling in his place, an interest for personnel, family, economic or revolutionary order. Rarely was their enrollment in the army pure patriotism. On the battle field, they not only helped the troops by transporting ammunition, people both well and wounded, they reconstructed the roads and fought beside the men weapons in hand. We have seen the importance of outside elements "exogenous", having contributed to their suffering, such as geographical placement, (mountainous and jungle regions and their contact with animals carrying decease; the climate change and intensified rain and dry seasons; the circumstances of war (chilling, chemical sprays, wounds, regular exposure to death) and the circumstances due to unstable living conditions such as constant movement (hunger, thirst, fatigue, physical exhaustion). Upon their return, these women went unrecognized. The traces left on their bodies by the war had seriously interfered with their reintegration into the society that they left. They returned disease-ridden to solitude, marriage problems and poor health. Their low level of education held them back from employment opportunities, leaving them to continue a new fight, one of a more personal level. The society, to this day, distinguishes them by six categories: those married, divorced, separated, and single, without children and those that are homeless. Thus it is the entire group of ex-volunteers that are seeking an identity along with certain rights as they have justly "fought for recognition" then participated in the creation of the Liaison Committee of ex-volunteers, which led to the succession of the Association ex-volunteers. This association constituted THE new motor force. It has played the role of a historic witness, forcing the Party and local authority's to value more appropriate social politics. However these politics haven't responded to any particular expectations. « The gift and return gift” are not equal, because this help has been largely insufficient and only reaches out to a restricted number of women, those who had kept their paperwork during the risky years of their engagement and those able to justify their wounds

Out of field-survey results, 50 initiatives have been chosen to study, firsthy, socio-economic integration and, secondly, responses made to an environment of exclusion in a specific, particularly underprivilegeol groups, namely, young women born to immigrants in France. These acts bring to light a determined will to approach autonomy through the creation of structures of their own, in which self-organization and the assumption of responsibility exclude recourse to welfare. In the first part, these acts are described and classified within a monograph; in the second part, an overview of the group is given in order to comprehend it and to examine the methods used. These innovative experiments belong in part to the social economy; they allow certain welfare practices to be called into question, problems to be fully realized, and such values as identity, social and collective usefulness, or solidarity to be concretized at the points where the different spheres of society-economic, social, cultural or political-meet. These acts of integration on an economic level lead to wider-ranging results; they have an impact on the family, the community and the host society. Their ultimate aim is genuine recognition of their participation in the society

Investigating imposes ineluctably, to consider the topic of the family. Virginity is a state which covers a physical dimension and a social-family. In certain places, it is sign of fertility and inspires mistrust and suspicion. Christianity, support a divine image of virginity through the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. In France, virginity is to some extent a social criterion, as well as the dowry or the family membership. Several popular observances from Maghreb are of pre-Islamic origin and so tied to tradition that they are confused with religion dogma. Virginity is institutionalized at the same time like a cultural, religious and ideological value. It is this social fact which mixes woman decency with male honor. The Second World War has generated an important body of literature for young people, especially in English-speaking countries. Far from concentrating on battlefields scenes, many authors choose the Home front as background for their stories and depict the lives of women and children in wartime. This literature is therefore a major source of information on their roles either during the London Blitz, in the occupied countries in the resistance movements or merely in everyday life, when these social categories are usually seen as minor actors. Yet, women and children, just like men, have incurred gruesome ordeals, from the British evacuation to incarceration in concentration camps, where those fragile populations were the first to be eliminated. The books from our corpus, often autobiographical accounts, give us an essential wealth of portraits and representations for this period

The women meet certain obstacles to fit into the world of the work. They wish to have their place and want to be able to negotiate modalities of their inclusion in public places, which can be culturally different, while preserving their own identity. So, the identical structuralization and the dynamics are under the influence of sociocultural, economic and family factors, themselves were organized with the intentionnalité of the actors. It is thus a question of studying what is the influence of the culture in the professional choices, and the life, the young women in France and in Algeria. We shall see that the choice of the professional project imposes to the young women the construction of identical strategies to reconcile professional life and family life, and the social representations of the culture of origin direct the decisions of the young women as for their life plan. The development of the feminine activity, as much in France as in Algeria, corresponds as much to the socioeconomic imperatives as to the evolutions of the mentalities of the various societies, as well as the aspiration and the demands of the very women. Indeed, the traditional said cultures progress more slowly than the modern said cultures where the Women's Liberation was made for already several years. But in spite of all the pitfalls which could meet on the road of these young women, they remain very motivated to change their fate and improve their living conditions. The work can so bring them a certain financial autonomy. Consequently, the women win more and more their independence in front of men

Daily life is offered to the human being in all simplicity. It goes on through small actions put in concrete form by trifles, daily acts, various rites which materialize public life as well as private life. That research is set up by the idea that everyday life is formative. All that occurs in daily life contains a cognitive essence which is developed by the individual in the course of his existential adventure. The study is carried out in a context of country life in a canton of Deux-Sèvres. Six women aged about thirty constitute the sample which supports the research. The practice of the life stories easily introduces into the multiple. Feminine spaces of life. The author tries to clear up how women lead their life and organize it every day. He shows the forms of experience in the situations of life with regard to skilllearning from daily practices. Then, he attempts to show the formative, transforming and organizing character which emerges from the thread of that everyday life. The evolutionary development of the human being enables to face the events which stand out as landwarks in life and give sense to the texture of human existence

This study deals with the body perception and identity of maghrebian young women born in france, through their speech. I tried to understand incidences of acculturation in their way of thinking their body and their identity. I pointed out that in their way of thinking, maghre, bian and french models were melting, each young woman doing her own arrangement. I also pointed out that acculturation brought about con, tradictions in their way of thinking their identity. During my survey, i questionned 9 young woman from 15 to 34 years old. Each young woman is presented through a portrait in which she speaks about her way of life in her family, the maghrebian models inculcated by her parents, and her way of life outside her family. The main conclusion of my survey is that all young women of the group have assimilated the notion of individuality of her body. They all claimed the autonomy of their body associated to the autonomy of their way of life

Young women descendants of Maghreban immigrants in France are the most affected by the confrontation between Islam and western modernity. Influenced by the cultures of two opposed and complex social systems, they are constantly confronted by the different expectations coming from different culture spheres. These young women aspire to a world which conforms to their desires and in which they are less dominated by the demands of the familly. But these aspirations can only be realised through pain. Being both handicapped by a status which takes away any independence concerning their own body and a fascination with the western role model of the emancipated woman, sports constitute, in their case, an excellent indicator of the obstacles by which they are constantly confronted. To overcome the inherent conflicts by of such ambivalent situations and maintain their aspirations for integration, these young women put in place strategies which mobilize number mechanisms for defence and adaptation. The apprehension of their actions required appeal with different methodologies (observation, questioning). Using analysis from a conative approach, the results allow us to note that the intellectual behaviour and physique of these young women are manifested, to different degrees, in the social dynamics of integretation. The level of the latter depends on the nature of their actions guided by their conations which are not necessarily identical in every situation. It’s fairly complex individual process in which the methods aim to establish a consonance which take into account the expectations of the environment and satisfied the aspirations of the individual

For 20 years, education has been coeducationnal in france, giving equal opportunities of access to scholar and career choices. Nevertheless inequalities in distribution of the sexes subsist in secondary schools and higher education. A governemental policy aiming at the widening girls'career opportunities inforced since 1984 some educational innovations, which were drawn from european equal opportunities programs. This research, presented in 3 parts, gives a socio-historical analysis of this policy. The research is based on official texts and on experimental projects in 2 local education authorities. The first part gives an outline of the evolution, in figures over 10 years, the explicit aims of the governemental mission as well as its administrative, organizational and pedagogical means. The second part gives an analysis of the conditions of implementation in 2 local authorities in the east of france and. In particular, the resistance met by young girls and women engaged in training and careers in the field of mechanics. The third part exposes the sociological, educational and psychological aspects by which professional and scholar aspirations are devised according to gender. The socialisation process is met by new opportunities for the determination of projects for the future and projects for the self in an educational environment which welcomes equal opportunities. These projects hav drawn a lot from the knowledge of feminist experimentations as well as from diversified vocational couselling experiences. The integrative theories of orientation and gender give career and educational couselling an ather frame trough which cultural equality practices can be reconsidered

Egyptian women are a typical yet rarely studied example of population undergoing a nutrition transition, touched by a high prevalence of overweight (88% in urban areas) and iron deficiency (50%). This situation suggests that their dietary intakes, which are so far poorly assessed and not well known, should be rebalanced. Diet modeling is a mathematical tool which helps to identify dietary changes improving nutritional intakes, taking into consideration several parameters of the local food environment. Yet, the acceptability of the nutritional strategies modeled is hardly predictable. This research thesis enabled to quantify the dietary intakes of young Egyptian women living in urban areas and to model strategies to improve nutritional intakes. The acceptability of the “theoretically optimal” solutions was then discussed with the population studied using qualitative surveys. The use of mixed methodologies (quantitative and then qualitative approaches) enabled to analyze in detail the local situation and to identify changes in dietary practices and in the fortified food offer. This approach seems promising to identify realistic and acceptable solutions to contribute solving local nutritional issues

Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Riyadh, this dissertation shows how young Saudi women, confronted to multiple constraints which limit their mobility and activities, negotiate new lifestyles through their access to four types of spaces: the female university campus, workplaces, shopping malls and religious spaces. This process draws new lines of inclusion and exclusion, and subjects them to other norms. The first part recounts the emergence of these spaces through sex segregation, which has been strictly applied since the Islamic Awakening and oil boom; the experts’ injunctions in favour of Saudi women’s professional activity, partly put into practice since 2003, in the context of the government’s discourse of reform; and economic liberalization, which has led to the opening of new spaces for consumption. The second part shows how young Saudi women negotiate their access to these spaces: since various constraints make their moving in the city especially costly, mobility becomes a lifestyle for which a paid job is necessary. The discourse of self improvement, consensual and widespread, proves to be central in the legitimization of new female activities interpreted in terms of personal development and achievement. The third part describes the interactions between young women within the spaces they share: through homosocial gatherings, the spread of behaviours which transgress official Islamic rules and the adoption of consumerist self-presentations, they episodically identify with a common “us”, but also reinvent femininities through classification struggle

Based on qualitative fieldwork on beauty pageants in two French cities, our PhD work shows how both the process of the contests and beauty as such may in fact empower young French women coming from the lower classes. Whereas beauty pageants and the “beauty work” have been criticized by second wave feminists (in the 1970s) as a tool of oppression against the emancipation of women, there seems to be a possibility of empowerment for the participants in the pageant process. The analysis focuses on demonstrating how the pageant process encourages the participants to use beauty and the normative physical appearance of (lower-)middle-class femininity to assert themselves, to become self-confident and empowered. The class, sex and age characteristics of the participants reinforce the hypothesis that beauty and beautifi-cation effectively constitute available resources for empowerment and emancipation, even within a limited margin of upward social mobility in a society where beauty, as an individual attribute, offers some real social benefits. Our work suggests that the dynamics of empowerment should be conceptualised in close relation to social class, beauty and gender, and highlights the deployment of these dynamics in the context of beauty pageants

Currently available birth simulators provide manikins that include new-born head and maternal pelvis but they do not produce the movements of the new-born in the mother’s pelvis. Furthermore available maternal pelvis do not include interface pressure and are not enough realistic to simulate maternal pelvic muscles. In summary, these simulators do not help students to practice the gestures they should safely use to help the new-born in normal and at-risk situations of delivery. The originality of our mechanical birth simulator, is to provide a system to mimic the last step of the instrumental delivery, to insure a safe training of junior obstetricians and to test new techniques in obstetrics practice. The new mechanical birth simulator is composed of three parts: a physical new-born head and a maternal pelvis manikin, an interface pressure system, and a pneumatic actuator that develops an active resistance. Driven by a computer, the simulator can simulate the contractions, the interface pressure applied in the new-born head and mimic birth complications
