Повний текст джерелаAlcohol used to have a divine and religious dimension but has since been desacralised and used for ritual purposes (family reunions, for example), but completely divorced from any divine dimension. As consumption patterns have changed, alcohol consumption has taken on a moral and even a public health dimension: drinking to excess is bad for the individual, but it is also bad for society. Women have a special place in the stigmatization of excessive drinkers, the 'alcohol-dependent,' the 'addicted' (or, more pejoratively, the 'alcoholic'). They are less visible, which at least raises the question of a specific drinking pattern. In an attempt to understand the dynamics of consumption by women alone, this research proposes to think of alcohol as the object of these dynamics and as a "pharmakon," i.e., an object with a dual role: remedy and poison. The clinical study of ten women showed the pivotal role of alcohol, both as a means of coping with events that dissolve and as a destroyer of health and relationships (even if this second dynamic is largely overshadowed in the perceptions of the women we met). A close reading of the women's discourse through the TAT method and the Rorschach protocol reveals, even more, an attempt to maintain a sense of self-containment beyond the impossibility of thinking oneself through the events that erase all forms and all possibilities of constructing an identity

Повний текст джерелаWith the passing practice of a clinician psychology listening to alcoholic's women, we were particularly sensitive to the recurrence of the femininity question and the difficulties that they have to go through. These researches on this subject propose an answer to the following question : what about femininity for an alcoholic woman ? Thanks to the psychoanalytical theory and particularly with reference to Freud and Lacan, we try to open and to throw light on this question centred on two main thoughts : how an alcoholic woman may identify herself as a woman ? How a human being anatomically female may become a woman ? Working on the masquerade femininity's concept, which is according to us, the proper meaning of the femininity, we have put in evidence how an alcoholic woman shirking of father's metaphor is unable to put in scene her feminine masquerade. Without an appropriate answer from her father to her question of femininity, an alcoholic woman is using the toxic alcohol in order to forget this non recognition of prime necessity

Повний текст джерелаOur study, which stands in the chronopsychological field, focuses on the aperitif ritual habit. This habit shows three features. It is the consumption of an alcoholic drink, socially shared out and taken at a given time. We have tried to estimate the effect of the alcoholic consumption and of the time of this consumption upon some psychotechnical achievements (some being motorperceptive and others mental) on the one hand, and upon the social communication on the other hand. We have carried out an experience with this aim in view and got the following results: the profiles of the daily fluctuation in the achievements can be distinguished from the standard profiles usually met with in the study of the vigilance and of the mental activity; the alcohol has made the communication easier but it has almost had no effect on all the psychotechnical achievements ; the time has had no effect at all either on the communication or on the non-verbal achievements of the general intelligence, but it has had some on the attentional tasks. We have also observed a training effect concerning these last ones. From this study, it seems to us that the sole mere alcohol consumption its not enough to activate the verbalization ; another condition is required, it is the ritual nature of this consumption

Повний текст джерелаAccording to selective exposure's theory, people tend to expose themselves to consonant information and to avoid discrepant ones (Festinger, 1957). However, many studies do not succeed in highlighting dissonant informations avoidance. Three explanation have been proposed. The first one assumes the existence of many factors that could moderate or modulate the relation between attitude and exposure. The second one do not agree with the existence of these processes and reduces them to a simple context effect. At least, the third one postulates that contradictory results come from measures. This work mainly deals with this last alternative. It explores the structure of attitude and uses different measures (attitude and behavior questionnaires, implicit measure). Furthermore, many new selective exposure measures are elaborated. Finally, all the experiments deal with alcohol and tobacco and allow us to gather information on the real impact of advertising and prevention for these hot topics

Повний текст джерелаAlcohol misuses can have negative social and health repercussions on a given population. In terms of professional risk, members of the French military must be particularly vigilant about alcohol, given some of the specificities of the profession of arms. This thesis was designed to propose a new methodological approach within French military in order to prioritize prevention focuses on alcohol misuses. To reach this objective, we relied on the one hand on a mixed methodology associating qualitative and quantitative methods which emphasizes on a pragmatic approach. On the other hand we relied on the theory of social representations, a robust tool for studying risky health behaviors. First, semi-structured exploratory interviews were conducted to identify the social representations of alcohol with a sample of military. In a second step, a questionnaire was implemented based on the results of the interviews. By focusing on the content and the organization of the discourses relating to alcohol, we were able to better define risky drinking practices of a French military population, and thus to propose preventive measures adapted to this specific population. Our methodological approach proves to be useful for the prevention and to be also innovative to understand a public health issue, as no researches on this subject have so far been carried out within the French Army Health Service

Повний текст джерелаCertain alcoholic women consult for their drinking problem when their children, old teenagers or young adults, take their independence. Thus they question a problem of dependence - their dependence on one product - when their children achieve their independence. The general hypothesis of this research is that for alcoholic women, the separation with the children leaving the family home would reactivate the issues of separation-individuation also implied in alcohol addiction. The concomitance of their desire to stop alcohol and their need for help to part from their children would be due to a self undifferentiated, consequence of the process of separation-individuation hindered prematurely. The self of the alcoholic woman is a self little differentiated from her family of origin, one "family self" instead of an individualself, which revives itself into the current family. The method of this research is based on the analysis of three clinical cases stemming of many years care in addictology, free drawings of the family tree, data of a hospital research and some literary material. A first axis of analysis concerns the type of relations whom the alcoholic woman has with her parents, with her spouse and with her children. The second axis studies the function of alcohol consumption for the alcoholic mother in the issue of separation-individuation. The third axis analyzes the expression of one "family self" in the patient, instead of an individual self. This study shows the different aspects which the "family self" in alcoholic women as their children leave then family home can take, and the benefit of the family approach when a mother suffers from alcoholism. The results of this research highlight the undifferentiated aspect of the self of the alcoholic mothers, who aims towards a slow differentiation, and towards an emergence of a feminine position

More precisely, we explore some risk factors for alcohol consumption, by studying the impact of various variables such as depression, anxiety, social support, coping, tobacco and substance consumption during pregnancy, with a set of questionnaires and scales. Moreover, in order to explore screening for alcohol consumption, we use a specific screening questionnaire, called T-ACE (Sokol eet al. , 1989), build for obstetric practice, for the first time in a French population of 126 women. Five of them, considered as probable alcohol consumers, had a semi-structured interview. Tobacco consumption and substance can be related to prenatal alcohol exposure. No significant difference has been found about depression, anxiety and social support. Psychopathologic history and coping strategies seems to be differnet. This work suggests a psychopathologic way to see alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and perhaps could help to improve screening

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis has four main objectives in the study of public health issue represented byfemale alcoholism: (1) to explore the representational and attributional specificities of femalealcoholism in general population (Women = 492; Men = 234) and the influence of alcoholconsumption practices on its construction as a “social” object by comparing it to malealcoholism, (2) to evaluate, from a clinical point of view, the predisposition to shame andguilt in a group of patients with an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD; criteria DSM-5) (Women =20; Men = 20) compared to a control group (Women = 20; Men = 20), (3) to devise, withinthe model of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), a primary prevention technique foroccasional heavy alcohol use or binge drinking and drunkenness amongst students between 18and 25 years old (Women = 80) by testing the effect of images and texts, positive vs.negative, and finally, (4) to assess, from a therapeutic point of view, amongst women with anAUD (Women: n = 16 and Men: n = 14), on the one hand, cognitive changes through thedevelopment of addictive beliefs regarding alcohol, and on the other hand, behaviouralchanges through the development of coping strategies, in relation to the two main treatmentgoals offered in Substance Abuse Departments in France: abstinence (n = 15) and controlleddrinking (n = 15).First, we observed the duality of alcohol consumption for the two objects of femaleand male alcoholism and the major influence on these results exercised by the participants’drinking habits. Second, we noted a greater predisposition to shame and guilt amongst womenwith an AUD. Therefore, on the one hand, female alcoholism appears to be judged morenegatively than male alcoholism and on the other hand, female alcoholics tend to be moresusceptible to suffering this negative affect. These results seem to attest a necessarytherapeutic work on the affect of shame in the treatment of female alcoholism. Third, ourfindings on prevention techniques within the model of the TPB highlighted the essential roleof the framing of health messages and the positive or negative emotions they arouse amongsta specific population considered "at risk" of developing pathologies due to alcoholconsumption, even though young women consume less than men. Last, our results offeredinteresting perspectives on the cognitive benefits related to the abstinence process and thedecision to abstain, compared to controlled consumption, as well as on the motivationsassociated with alcohol consumption and its relinquishment

Повний текст джерелаIdeas on temperance societies began to circulate in France from the 1830s, when the first associations of this type appeared in English-speaking countries. The French temperance movement was formed at the end of the 19th century, but the contours of its adversary remained unclear until the First World War: activists fought both for temperance and against alcoholism, without defining these notions. Women were engaged in associations of that time, but their action was hardly visible. During the War 14-18, the alcohol – distilled drinks and drinks with a titer of more than 23° – was declared "the enemy of the interior" and was actively combated by temperance activists and in particular by the Union of French women against alcohol. Wine and other fermented beverages avoided attacks throughout the interwar period and during the Second World War. From the 1950s, the idea that all alcoholic beverages are potentially harmful began to assert slowly in public opinion. The state started the fight against alcoholism: its objective was the prevention of health. Therefore, temperance associations were obliged, and still are, to reinvent themselves, trying to conform to new trends in health prevention sphere. Women activities also shifted, due to major social changes as the acquisition of the right to vote, the baby boom of the Thirty Glorious Years and the media coverage of female alcoholism

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis aims to examine the consequences the stigma of overweight among young women who perceive themselves as overweight (whether this perception is justified or not), via the phenomenon of stereotype threat (Steele & Aronson, 1995). We propose that threatening contexts (in which negative stereotypes are about the eating behaviours of overweight people are activated), can (i) bias overweight self-perceived women's nutritional values assessment, and thus lead them to select dishes that are not adapted to their needs, and (ii) increase their consumption of comfort food. The experimental studies of this doctoral work tend to confirm these hypotheses: their results indicate that the more young women think they are overweight, (i) the less successful they are at estimating the calorie content of foods and selecting dishes on the basis of their nutritional values, (ii) the more they consume fatty and sugary foods. We also investigate the roles of emotions (especially anxiety) and working memory resources in these effects. Although our studies do not allow us to assert the involvement of emotional mechanisms, one of our studies underlines the role of a decrease in working memory resources. While other studies have already reported the deleterious consequences of overweight stereotype threat in objectively overweight individuals (e.g., Brochu & Dovidio, 2014), ours are the first to report on the consequences of this phenomenon in overweight self-perceived women, and confirm that weight perception must be taken into account in studies on the negative health consequences associated with weight stigma

Повний текст джерелаThe woman’s role in the trial can substantially be brought back to three areas: the evidence, the legal aid and the guilt. It is generally accepted that the woman could not be a witness. However this does not what come out from the Digest, where is deduced a general witness ability unless the woman has not been condemned for adultery.Even though the woman was excluded moribus from the officia virilia (D. 50.17.2 pr.-1), in addition to the position of witness, there are testimonies of mulieres that discussed cases pro se aut pro aliis. This women are judged by the ancient authors with indignation (because the in iudicis tacere was the only appropriate behavior for the female condicio naturae). They are extraordinary exempla, that must be handed down as negative examples.Of course, there was no place in the Roman world for women judges. It is interesting how Cassius Dio (h. R. 50.5.4) uses this foreclosure, to demonstrate how much Queen Cleopatra was far from the Roman customs. The largest range of cases is the one of mulieres reae. The Idealtypus of the woman for the Romans is the one of a good wife and a good mother, sober, reliable, silent. In this social background, the female crimes more perpetrated are therefore veneficium, adulterium, stuprum and probum. It is particular also the crime of wine drinking, a hypothesis of crime that is punished only if it is made by a woman. The mulier was – within the limits of her status – cives and she could be tried with every trial system. But, some characteristics have distinguished the trial against men from the trial against women
Chen, Wei-Ping. "“Parisian seduction”, romantic emotion and cultural consumption : a discursive study on the ideal of female singlehood in Taiwan and France." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0126.
Повний текст джерелаThe discourses regarding “single Parisian women” demonstrate women’s quest for the ideal of intimacy, structured by a series of individualistic and consumerist aspirations. This consumer culture has already become prominent in Taiwan, France, and many other societies, and plays an important role in connecting women’s romantic emotions and expectations with cultural consumption. The emerging media preoccupation with constant and reflexive monitoring of individuals’ self-presentation and actions has penetrated the contemporary culture of intimacy and significantly influenced women’s lives. Meanwhile, the quest for authenticity is a key element compelling individuals to engage with consumerist goods and justify their involvement with capitalism. This study aims to illuminate the complexity connecting cultural consumption to individual subjectivities in contemporary intimacy. By studying the imagination of “single Parisian women” that encourages women to adopt the lifestyle marked by feminine charm, self-fulfillment and autonomy, this study asks how and to what extent does the individualistic aspiration offered by the “single Parisian women” ethos intersect with the gendered culture of intimacy? Through what kind of cultural process do women turn consumption into romantic-feminist subjectivities, and vice versa?Qualitative textual analysis of the articles collected from six online media resources and the in-depth interviews with 20 readers or editors were used to define the relations between actors, texts, and social contexts. Analysis of the discourses shows that women under study tend to claim to be detached from their “traditional” gendered roles and subscribe to the idea of self-fulfillment regarding sexuality and profession, while they suffer greatly from such individualist aspiration. In this context, the discourses studied precisely respond to the ambivalence of female singlehood and facilitate women’s self-reflection by providing them with the imagination, obscurely woven into everyday consumption, to self-justify -guide, and -adjust vis-à-vis the contradictory values. Another day-to-day struggle considers the idea of “evolving together,” related to the underlying tension between the commitment of a life-long intimate relationship and the need for romantic compatibility based on ideological criteria. Emotions, personal qualities, and intellectual displays that transcend beyond women’s aging bodies as the imagined expectations of intimacy and sexiness are largely promoted in these discourses. They are believed to be even more attainable and subject to examination than a bodily makeover. Besides, by obscuring the definition of “good” femininity with consumerist creativity and simultaneously minimizing the consumerist traces in intimate life, women’s subjectivities oscillate between individuality and social conformity. Women who can demonstrate their ability to consume luxury and turn it from impulsive to reflexive consumption as a collective purpose, are deemed as capable of being detached from the overwhelming demands of switching between different gendered roles. Based on these results, I conclude that the ideal of intimacy cannot be fully understood without considering the gender issues these discourses want, pretend, or fail to tackle. Additionally, cultural consumption should relate to its subsequent variations such as gender and feminist concerns, wherein lie the complexity between imagined expectations and the limitations of individuals’ daily lives

Повний текст джерелаThe analysis of the connection made of alcoholism to the construction of the subject and how the alcoholic diagnosis might produce effects on the process of production of identity lead us to three hypotheses: the label "alcoholic" might impact the process of production of subjectivity; the subjective effects of a nomination are related to the uses the name “alcoholic” have in different historical contexts; The identification as an alcoholic is marked by a search for alliance of the subject with a social network a lot more than it is marked for the subjective feeling of identity to a uniformity and continuing of what is designated by the diagnosis of alcoholism. The field research in addictology centres and associations derived from five interviews. The alcoholic identity might constitute a process of belonging for those who have their lives transformed by migration; of resisting productivism, for those who have to be in the army and in big productive chains and it could also be an opening to new friendships for those who have been through relationship break-ups. However, this identity might hide the singularity of the subject, as when it is used as a conclusive key explanation to conflicts

Повний текст джерелаRisk-taking behaviours of young people are issues that need to be addressed. Understanding their origins could prevent them from wide spreading. Consequently, this thesis focused on the psychological factors of vulnerability to alcohol use and subclinical eating disorders amongst young people. More specifically, we examined the influences of parental attachment, personality characteristics and alexithymia on these risk-taking behaviours through different models. Three studies have been carried out. The first one aimed to assess the role of the parental attachment and self-concept in alcohol use of adolescents (N = 245). The second one identified direct and indirect effects of parental attachment, personality characteristics and alexithymia on alcohol use and subclinical eating disorders amongst a sample of student athletes (N = 434). The third study emphasized the direct and indirect relationships between parental attachment, personality facets, alexithymia and subclinical eating disorders amongst a sample of elite athletes (N = 275). The findings provided evidence that risk-taking behaviours of young people were linked with an insecure parental attachment and difficulties in identifying and describing their feelings. Alcohol use was related to low conscientiousness whereas subclinical eating disorders were related to high neuroticism. Insecure parental attachment influenced alcohol use through its influence on conscientiousness and difficulties in identifying one’s feelings. Finally insecure attachment influenced subclinical eating disorders through high neuroticism, and specifically high impulsivity amongst elite athletes.Key words: alcohol use, subclinical eating disorders, parental attachment, alexithymia, personality factors, adolescents, student athletes, elite athletes

Повний текст джерелаSocial labeling is a persuasion technique which consists of assigning a label to an individual (i.e. personality trait or value) in order to see him/her comply with it. This approach, which is positive for the target individual because it is based on labeling socially valued qualities, provides good results on behavioral changes. This work intends to question the effectiveness of social labeling in a social marketing approach. Using four experimental studies, we test the relevance of the method in the areas of citizenship and taxes (studies 1.1 & 1.2), students drug and alcohol use (study 2), and children environmental awareness (study 3). We show that the technique can be effective in a social communications approach, but requires an appropriate understanding of the application context

Повний текст джерелаThe main goal of this PhD research was to study the consequences of social comparison on implicit and explicit self-evaluation in terms of cautiousness, on affect and on risk-taking behavior. In a series of studies, participants were exposed to a comparison standard who displayed either cautious (high standard) or reckless (low standard) drinking behavior. Results show that participants confronted with the high standard implicitly perceive themselves as more reckless and experience higher levels of anxiety than participants exposed to the low standard. On the other hand, the comparison standard does not influence explicit self-evaluation and controlled behaviors. These results indicate that there might be a dissociation between automatic (implicit) and controlled (explicit) processes involved in social comparison. On an applied level, regarding alcohol prevention campaigns, our findings suggest that it could be more effective to show a cautious standard rather than a reckless one

Повний текст джерелаIndividuals exhibiting high levels of physical aggression during childhood are more at risk of criminal behaviors during adulthood regardless of the presence of several risk factors. Aggressive children are also more at risk of using psychoactive substances during adolescence. Studies of the relationship between substance use and crime have provided different conclusions, depending on the substance under consideration and depending on the category of crime. Alcohol consumption has been positively associated with crimes, both against people and against property. Cannabis consumption has been associated positively with crime against property and negatively with crime against people. This present study aimed at investigating the hypothesis that physical aggression manifested in childhood is associated with an increase in criminal charges during adulthood and that association is specific to the type of crime and moderated differentially by alcohol and cannabis use. To this end, 887 male participants from lower socioeconomic status were followed from age 6 to age 25. Multinomial logistic regressions indicate that individuals belonging to a moderate or a high trajectory of physical aggression during childhood are more likely to commit crimes later in adulthood. This association remains significant after control of family adversity and drug use. Alcohol and cannabis use during adolescence has no effect on this association. However, main effects of alcohol use on crimes against person and cannabis use on crimes against property are observed. The implications of these findings are discussed.
Paradis, Catherine. "Rôles sociaux et consommation d’alcool des femmes et des hommes au Canada : une analyse située du rôle parental." Thèse, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/12829.
Повний текст джерелаThe objective of this doctoral thesis is to examine how the parental role influences women and men’s alcohol consumption. More precisely, it explores whether the dynamic relationships between the parental role, the circumstances into which it is enacted and drinking contexts provide an explanation to the various individual manners to consume alcohol. This research is based on the observation that within the alcohol field, there is a tendency to treat social actor and the social action as if they were detached from their immediate social environment. Therefore, existing models that focus on the mechanisms through which social roles influence alcohol consumption are limited. To achieve a better sociological understanding of alcohol consumption, this thesis proposes a theoretical framework that highlights the necessity to take into account the situation. A social actor behaves according to certain circumstances (between-role stressors) into which his/her role is enacted. Drinking depends on the contexts (spatial, temporal, symbolic and relational characteristics) in which it occurs. The general hypothesis of this research postulates that to understand the association between social roles and alcohol consumption, both the social actor and social action need to be situated. The empirical validity of the theoretical framework has been tested from quantitative analyses of data from the GENACIS Canada (GENder Alcohol and Culture: an International Study) survey and data from the Canadian Addiction Survey. The results of these analyses are presented in three articles submitted for publication. The analyses reveal the legitimacy of the proposed theoretical framework. Situating the act of drinking has allowed to observe that drinking contexts are mediators of the relationship between the parental role and alcohol consumption and more specifically, that parents report to less frequent abusive drinking than non-parents because they drink in different locations. Situating the act of drinking has also revealed that men and women tend to consume alcohol in accordance with the immediate drinking context rather than their positional role. However, observing the circumstances into which individual enact their parental role has not improved our understanding of the relationship under study. The scientific evidences provided by this doctoral thesis open the door to the development of preventive environmental measures that focus on the immediate drinking context instead of the individual in order to reduce abusive drinking behaviors among both men and women.

The two general objectives pursued are to gain a better understanding of the potential influence of the social/environmental context on drinking habits among older adults and to achieve a clearer discernment of the relation between alcohol consumption and health. The thesis comprises two empirical articles relating to each respective objective. More specifically, the first article verified whether contextual changes associated to alcohol and unique to the decade spanning the 1990s may have had an impact on alcohol consumption (period effect) by comparing two subsamples of older adults from two Canadian surveys: the 1994 CADS (Canada’s Alcohol and other Drugs Survey) and 2004 GENACIS (GENder, Alcohol, and Culture: an International Study). The article also assessed if the context had a significant effect on the differences observed when age, subjective perception of health and the sociodemographic composition of the samples were taken into consideration. Results first show that, in a social/environmental context that is more favourable to drinking in general, the rates of current drinkers, binge drinking, beer and wine drinkers are significantly higher in 2004. In addition, drinking profiles were not significantly different between 1994 and 2004 (volume, frequency, quantity, maximum quantity), pointing at the potential impact of normal physiological changes due to aging on drinking profiles. The second article aimed to build a drinking typology (including drinkers and non-drinkers) among older Canadian adults, to assess how the drinking typology was related to health status and to compare the role of alcohol with other determinants of health (demographic, psychosocial and health-related factors) in explaining health status. To do so, the subjective perception of health (subjective health) was used as a proxy for actual health status. Results from the 2004 GENACIS survey indicated that drinkers perceived themselves as being in better physical health than nondrinkers, regardless of the drinking pattern. Health status may explain drinking status and not the opposite. Results also showed that the demographic, psychosocial and health-related characteristics of older adults contributed significantly more to the variation in subjective health than the drinking status alone. Health benefits of drinking are explained by biological factors, but not exclusively by biological factors. In conclusion, alcohol research needs to emphasize the study of drinking among older adults, which can vary depending on the cohort and period under study. From a public health perspective, health-predicting models focusing on older adults need to be built on a better understanding of the impact of alcohol and other determinants of health on health status. Main contributions, practical implications, limitations of the thesis and recommendations for future research are presented in the discussion.
