Our intention is to carry out an introductory comparative analysis of three relevant feminist approaches that divide the gender studies scene. Despite the risks, the methodological decision was made by theoretical research (Salvador, 1986; Apple, 1994), aware that it is politically informed, as theories reveal interests of the class, gender, sexuality, nation, race/ethnicity, generation, and are linked to social practice. To proceed with the study, we highlight three aspects, which are: the assumptions, the notion of gender, and the political commitment. The results we have reached inform about the existence of divergences and convergences between these feminist approaches, confirming the irreconcilable divergence between feminist historiography and poststructuralist feminism, inconsistent convergence between poststructuralist feminism, and decolonial feminism, and convergence between feminist historiography and decolonial feminism. Keywords: Feminist historiography. Feminist movement in Africa lacks capable guardians to steer the development of feminine identity or theory, and to operationalize the feminist agenda. The apparent lack of a national or continental feminist theory has not helped to elevate the status of the majority of women beyond the patriarchal controls, particularly in the rural and peri-urban communities, despite improved social modernization. Africa’s feminist crisis involves the lack of leadership, ideological vacuity, absence of structure or movement, and the non-application of cultural; political; class; religious and tribal identities in developing feminist theory. In search of capable feminist guardians, the tendency of feminist groups is to co-opt self-actualized African women into feminism with or without their consent, and without regard to the accidental coincidence of those personalities’ narratives with feminist epistemology. Feminism in Africa is in search of relevance within the public space. This paper interrogates these issues and uses the narrative of several self-actualized women in Africa, who have, apparently, been co-opted into feminism as a result, to discuss aspects of the crisis and the delimiting public policy and legislation against, perhaps, the development of feminine identity.

The ‘personal is political’ has long been recognised as the definitive slogan of second-wave feminism but can it still inform our understanding of the contemporary practice of feminism? Questioning the importance of this claim now invites us to critically reflect upon the trajectory Western feminism has followed in light of the efforts made by the Women’s Liberation movement to politicise formerly unquestioned aspects of social relations. In this paper, the significance of this feminist slogan will be assessed by locating it within two broadly defined historical periods. Firstly we identify the critical work performed by the ideas expressed in the slogan in the early years of the 1970s and then assess their continued relevance within the context of the early 21st century. Drawing upon the empirical analysis of young women’s experience of and relationship to feminism via their engagement with social media in Britain, this research critically assesses digital spaces as places where young women explore their personal experiences. We aim to understand how this may constitute a contemporary form of feminist practice consistent with the claim that ‘the personal is political’.

Abstract This article considers the role that feminism has played in the development of sport history. More than writing “women’s sport history,” “feminist sport history” critically (re)engages issues of theory, method, and representation in the ways we approach historical scholarship. However, feminism remains a diverse area of thought that includes both political and personal aspects, which creates differences in the perspectives that feminist scholars bring to the field. After an overview of the development and contributions of feminism to sport history, this article reveals some of the diverse feminist perspectives in the field by constructing a dialogue using comments from interviews and literature from three “generations” of feminist sport historians. The article analyzes the entangled history of feminism and women’s history over the long period from the emergence of feminist thought to the challenges and changes of the 21st century. Based on the concept of four waves of feminism, the paper is organized into four separate chapters that show the development of feminism, women’s history, Croatian feminism, and finally the history of women in Croatia in each phase, while seeking continuities and discontinuities, links and points of divergence. It concludes that women’s history and feminism are intertwined at the theoretical, social and cultural-political level. They open and consider similar questions, and borrow patterns, terminology and arguments from each other. They were supported, conceived and implemented by the same circle of women and men, especially in the second wave, which played a key role in the creation and representation of contemporary feminism. During the third wave, there is a separation of the activist and theoretical aspects of feminism, as well as the emancipation of women’s history from its status as a political tool of feminism. However, the emergence of the fourth wave has shown that feminist criticism of society is not exhausted, nor is its connection to women’s and gender history. Feminism in Croatia developed simultaneously as an indigenous and imported concept. Although feminist ideas undoubtedly come from Western countries and we can follow similar trends in Croatian and global feminism in each wave, they were also implemented and adapted to local political and social circumstances and needs: national movements, socialism, war, transition or European integration. Finally, women’s history in Croatia developed in accordance with the achievements of local feminism, historiography and socio-political circumstances. Numerous similarities with general trends can be traced: a closer intermingling with the women’s movement and feminism, political engagement during the first and second waves, and the heterogeneity of approaches and themes since the end of the 20th century. However, the dynamics of its development, choice of topics and popularity were also determined by political context.

Feminism emerged as an important ideological trend in contemporary Russia. Different strands of this thought focus on divergent problems experienced by Russian women. Some researchers consider the experience of women representing Russia’s growing middle class. Others tend to focus on the problems of dispossessed and less privileged layers of the Russian society. The difference in the focus of attention is reminiscent of the pre-existing Western division of the feminist thought on the feminism of equality and feminism of difference. This paper will consider the main directions of these debates in Russia focusing on key aspects pondered by feminism in general. It will also argue that the state deploys both strands of feminist thought selectively in situations that suits its ideological and political purposes.

In this article I investigate what are thought to be generational differences within contemporary American feminism. I identify three dominant approaches to understanding “third wave” feminism: cohort-based, age-based, and theory-based, and then analyze empirical data to discern the extent of difference within and across “waves” of American feminism, using each of these approaches. Drawing from a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, I argue that third wave feminism might be better understood as an identity, rather than a distinct theoretical perspective, age group, or cohort. My findings suggest that feminists of all ages share many important aspects of their gender and political ideologies. Moreover, my analysis of “third wave” feminist texts and those “second wave” texts that directly speak to generational differences reveals that, in many cases, feminist scholarship itself reproduces the very differences it aims to understand. To the extent that feminist scholarship has failed to question adequately dominant portrayals of “other” feminist generations, and has failed to recognize the diversity of people and perspectives within all feminist generations, feminist scholarship has, in effect, reified distinct, static waves of feminism.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer novel insights into: knowledge of proto-feminism through description and analysis of the rule of the seventh century female Emperor Wu Zetian; postcolonial theory by revealing the existence and proto-feminist activities of a non-western female leader; and the literature on gender and invisibility through a study of a leading figure that is relatively unknown to western feminists and is even, in feminist terms, something of a neglected figure. Design/methodology/approach – In order to examine Wu’s proto-feminist practices as recorded in historical materials, we use critical hermeneutics as a tool for textual interpretation, through the following four stages: choosing texts from historical records and writings of Wu; analyzing the historical sociocultural context; analyzing the relationship between the text and the context; and offering a conceptual framework as a richer explanation. Findings – Wu’s life activities demonstrate proto-feminism in late seventh century China in at least four aspects: gender equality in sexuality, in social status, in politics, and women’s pursuit of power and leadership. Research limitations/implications – Future research may dig into the paradox of Wu’s proto-feminist practices, the relationship between organizational power and feminism/proto-feminism, and the ways in which Wu’s activities differ from other powerful women across cultures, etc. Practical implications – The study encourages a rethink of women and leadership style in non-western thought. Social implications – The study supports Calás and Smircich’s 2005 call for greater understanding of feminist thought outside of western thought and a move to transglobal feminism. Originality/value – This study recovers long lost stories of women leadership that are “invisible” in many ways in the historical narratives, and contributes to postcolonial feminism by revealing the existence of indigenous proto-feminist practice in China long before western-based feminism and postcolonial feminism emerged.

This article reassesses the shift from lesbian-feminism to queer in light of the expressivist turn in feminist thought. The article follows Charles Taylor's theory of expressivism as a modernist, Romantic paradigm of identity and practice. Expressivism defines the self and freedom as a process of self-creation, a poeisis. An expressivist paradigm underlies aspects of contemporary feminist praxis, redefining politics as practices of transforming the subject, self, and/or language. I argue that this paradigm of praxis ultimately works to depoliticize feminism. I criticize two forms of expressivism, namely, lesbian-feminist normative expressivism (based on ethical ideals of liberation) and queer performative expressivism (based on aesthetic ideals of subversion, i.e., "arts of the self"). I argue that feminism needs to break out of the expressivist paradigm and to reconceptualize a praxis that interrelates practices of self-transformation with concrete, political practices aimed at transforming the social order.

Starting with a speech by Theodor Adorno, the essay analyzes some thematic parallels between political and religious populism regarding the view on gender and feminism. In both certain traditional Catholic circles and right-wing political parties, an explicit hostility toward gender can be observed. In this article, this resentment is discussed in three aspects: the defense of a traditional image of the family, the instrumentalization of women’s rights against “the Islam”, and, generally, the propaganda of anti-feminism or anti-genderism. Moreover, the text considers the fact that in spite of anti-feminist positions, many women are part of these movements, sometimes even as leaders. The text will prove that this is only a superficial contradiction. The right-wing populist groups—both secular and religious—promise to reduce the potential threat to modern societies while “preserving” the traditional order. The coalitions between them run along the lines of the “values” represented, including anti-feminism and anti-genderism. The danger that these “alliances” pose to a liberal society must not be underestimated by the religious and secular actors who value and protect ambiguity and diversity.

This comparative study aims to explores the origins of feminism in Spain and China. After examining the early stages of feminism in both countries, common aspects and differences emerge as a result of distinct social, political, and cultural conditions that shape the identity of each nation. To understand the beginnings of feminism, it is necessary to delve into the past when the concept of feminism did not yet exist, but there were voices that began to demand a different way of considering and treating women. In the case of Spain, notable pioneers such as María de Zayas Sotomayor have been selected, and also two key aspects, female education and women's suffrage, to comprehend the beginnings and their chronological evolution. Likewise, when considering China, apart from examining thinkers like Li Zhi in the 16th century, attention should be directed to the late 19th century to observe the development of feminism in areas that align with the Spanish context, such as women's education, as well as other initial feminist movements shaped by the unique circumstances faced by women in China. Overall, this study sheds light on the historical trajectories of feminism in Spain and China, offering insights into their shared and distinctive characteristics.

Liberal feminism, a prominent faction within the feminist movement, advocates gender equality, individual freedom, and women's rights. Modern artistic works, notably music videos, often act as implicit visual manifestos for promoting these ideals. This study aimed to analyze visual signs representing liberal feminism in Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" music video and identify the predominant aspects of liberal feminism depicted in it. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data was collected by downloading a music video and watching it repeatedly to find elements of visual signs in the form of screenshots. The data was then analyzed to reveal the meaning that represents liberal feminism using Charles Pierce's triangle of meaning, along with various liberal feminist theories, including those by Tong, Worell, Hanifah, et al. The results found 11 visual signs representing the dual objectives of liberal feminism—freedom, liberality, and individuality, as well as equal rights and opportunities in political and social contexts. The second goal, emphasizing equality of rights and opportunities, was particularly prominent. As a result, "Dark Horse" implied that women possess the capability and entitlement to attain parity with men in various facets of life, as their abilities are comparable, if not superior.

The article presents the results of a multidisciplinary analysis of such political constant (political sense) as “feminism”. New aspects of the reaction of societies to the practice of exercising political power in different regions and countries are revealed. The analysis was carried out on the basis of political media geography - a new discipline in political science. The author considers feminism as a political sense that fits well into the framework of “big” ideologies: communism, socialism, capitalism. The author uses the concept of a mental landscape, which can be considered as a way of thinking, attitude to any socially significant phenomena and processes of residents of a certain area, territory. The research is based on big data obtained from Google for the period 2010-2023 - the dynamics of Internet users’ requests in Nordic countries, according to topics that mark the meaning of “feminism”. The study concentrates on a new understanding of Internet bibliometrics, which takes into account the massive interest of users in various topics, expressed in the number of requests for certain keywords or phrases in a certain period of time. The author focuses on the phenomenon of anisotropy of mental landscapes especially in Sweden and Finland. Despite the fact that feminism still remains politically attractive, available empirical data indicate an increasing anisotropy of the mental landscapes of all countries in the region. Popularity of feminism fell below its peak. It is possible to predict the degradation of the ideology, the decline of its role as a factor and instrument of political struggle.

This paper revisits elements of second wave feminism—in its psychoanalytic, radical, materialist, Marxist and deconstructionist aspects—the better to understand how it is we might define sexual difference today. The vexed question of sexuation, of what it means to be a woman in particular has today generated great tensions at the theoretical, legal and philosophical level. This paper is an attempt to return to aspects of the second wave—an unfinished project where many enduring feminist concerns were for the first time thoroughly and metaphysically articulated—the better to defend the importance of sexual difference. To this end, the transcendental and parallax dimensions of sexed life will be discussed, alongside a defence of the centrality of the mother to our thinking about the relevance and necessity of preserving the importance of sexual difference, not only for thought but also for political and legal life. From a theoretical point of view, for many decades the discipline of International Relations was dominated by the triad of realism, which remained the overwhelmingly dominant theoretical approach. It was not until 1980 that other political approaches began to gain some momentum. International relations is one of the last areas to accept feminism. This has contributed greatly to its use in almost all areas of research. Compared to other disciplines, the feminist aspect in international relations appeared much later. Feminism is a series of movements aimed at defending equal opportunities for women in the different areas of politics, social rights and other aspects of society. Feminist approaches to international relations became widespread in the late 20th century, and these approaches called for women’s experiences to be ignored from studies of international relations theory. Feminists who study international relations have argued that gender issues apply to international relations. Women succeed through their ambition, diplomacy and oratory to excel in the leadership area, which is the main premise for women to lead fully, dynamically but also in an original way. Throughout history, women have gone through several stages that have finally brought her to the position where the male elite give respect, love and attention to women throughout society. This paper fully demonstrates the vitality and continued viability of feminist projects in a variety of forms and contexts, assesses the challenges facing feminism and strongly advocates its continued relevance to contemporary global politics. The main objective of this paper is to present the importance of feminism today and its role as a paradigm in international relations.

Since its birth, feminism has been closely associated with emancipation. And now it is understood primarily as the liberation of women from discrimination, other trends remain, rather, the exception. Moreover, liberation as a goal is rarely called into question. At the same time, freedom is an ethical category, and the desire for liberation inevitably raises moral questions. Therefore, the connection between feminism and ethics is not accidental. The topics that I want to touch on are, in my opinion, key to understanding this connection. I will begin the discussion with what exactly feminism seeks to free itself from, and for this I will remind you of some facts of female discrimination. Most women in modern society are overburdened with double work: housework and work to earn financial security. As a result, they give up their careers for the careers of a husband. Well, if he understands this, and if he considers his personal success as a result of joint efforts, and not just his talent. The burden of homework interferes with both professional growth and political activity. If a woman, not neglecting her two works, begins to engage in politics, then this activity - participation in rallies, congresses, the search for sponsors and maintaining relations with them, participation in elections - becomes her third job. It is not surprising that in such a situation, women rarely achieve leadership positions, both in government and in business. Needless to say, double loading leaves few opportunities for continuing education.

There appears to be a lack of interest from researchers on African art, on feminist related issues. Their researches are devoted to other aspects of African art. This situation has created a gap in both African art and African gender studies. The present essay interrogates the socio-economic and political position of women in Africa from a feminist theoretical viewpoint. Here, the formation and the activities of the women group in Awka was used as a case study, to foreground the fact that feminism is not alien to Africa; rather it has existed in Africa since the ancient times. The women group stands out as true African patriots and protagonists of the African feminist struggle.

In todays modern globalized world, the power and impact of media in different aspects of human life are universally acknowledged. The elements of feminism in media have been widely researched in the past, but, how feminist ideas are portrayed in childrens media largely remains unexplored. The aim of this research is to explore the presentation of feminist concepts, notions, and ideas in a specific genre of childrens media – animations – through verbal and non-verbal language including verbal discourse, expressions, and overall communicative symbolism. The sample of the study consists of fourteen famous animations which are selected through purposive sampling. The results reveal that the feminist ideas and concepts presented deal with the empowerment and liberation of women, and hinted towards real-life womens issues such as education, adolescence, abuse, oppression, gender equality in work and employment, personal choice and other political, social and economic issues rather than presenting stereotypical image of women.

In the context of efforts to revive and reconfigure the left, fraught solidarity relations between feminism and other left forces are again under the political spotlight. This article revisits the widespread use of the ‘unhappy marriage’ metaphor to characterise these relations, given that metaphors play a significant role in structuring political discourse and action. We argue that the metaphor has been used in uncritical and limiting ways, and turn to feminist reconfigurations of the institutions of marriage to develop a more expansive, reflexive conceptual lens. We then apply this lens to three case studies of left organising in Scotland around the time of the 2012–2014 Scottish independence referendum, showing that the expanded marriage metaphor captures a more complex story of solidarity relations. Nonetheless, aspects of the marriage metaphor remain irredeemable, and we end with a call for the continued development of alternative frameworks that imagine political solidarity differently.

The initial phase of women's drama in Canada coincides with the first wave of 19th-century Canadian feminism and the Canadian women's reform movement. At the time, a variety of women wrote and staged plays that grew out of their commitment to the political, ideological and social context of the movement. The 'Mock Parliament,' a form of theatrical parody in which men's and women's roles are reversed, was collectively created by different groups of suffragists in Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. This article attempts to recuperate these works for a history of Canadian feminist theatre. It will argue that the 'dual' conservative and liberal ideology of the suffrage movement informs all aspects of the Mock Parliament. On the one hand, these plays critique the division of gender roles that material feminism wants to uphold; they are testimony to the strength of a woman's movement that knew how to work as equal players within traditionally structured political organizations. On the other hand, they betray the safe, moderate tactics of an upper and middle-class, white womanhood who wanted political representation but no structural social change. These opposing tensions are inherent in theatrical parody which is both imitative and critical.

Michel Foucault’s focus on power relationships has drawn political scientists, political philosophers, and feminists to his texts. His argument which analyses power and discourse takes political analysts beyondstate as the locus of power. In general, his work is important for feminist analyses, especially the threevolumeof historical account of sexuality, because it shares with feminists and intense and critical gaze atsexuality, ‘power and knowledge.’ However, Foucault’s politics of Western sexuality leaves female sexualityinvisible. To complete this historical account of sexuality requires feminist critiques which extend and alterthe analysis to include female sexuality. Thus, the question is not if, but how Foucault should be situated intocontemporary feminist theory. This paper examines four major criticisms that traditional feminists haveargued against Foucault’s understanding of theory-justification, power relations, collective politics, and genderneutrality. We argue that the first three criticisms are undiscovered, but offer an important set of political toolto feminism. For the gender neutrality criticism, we argue that Foucault’s neglect of gender difference in hishistory of sexuality falls short of feminist goals. Finally, feminists should approbate only the aspects ofFoucauldian philosophy that are conductive to gender analysis and move beyond Foucault’s androcentrism tocreate alternative histories of sexuality and opportunities for resistance.

This lecture challenges the narratives of postcolonial failure to argue that, Africans have accumulated valuable experiences that can lift us out of transgenerational obscurity and provide transformative lessons for the future. Among these are the legacies of Kwame Nkrumah and his vision of the interlinked nature of economic and cultural processes, and his affirmation of women’s role in African liberation. The lecture reviews Nkrumah’s intellectual legacy to argue that, aspects of this have been taken up in African feminist movements that give an afterlife to a praxis of African liberation. Characterized by transdisciplinary and activist approaches that link theory with practice, African feminism is strongest where it pursues the simultaneous transformation of political, cultural, and economic life. It is an approach exemplified in the digitally-curated, livestreamed Third Kwame Nkrumah Festival, and archived online.

A comparison of two main contemporary philosophical approaches to the analysis of “political propaganda” is conducted: positivist and psychoanalytic. The positivist approach, based on the idea of objectivity and observability of phenomena, analyzes political propaganda using empirical methods and statistical data. It seeks to identify patterns and trends in the dissemination and impact of propaganda messages on mass consciousness. On the other hand, the psychoanalytic approach focuses on the unconscious and emotional aspects of political propaganda. It views propaganda techniques as means of subconscious manipulation and psychological control, paying attention to the symbolic and subjective aspects of political communication. The article analyzes the basic principles of each approach, their theoretical foundations, and methodological tools. Examples from history and contemporary times are provided to illustrate the application of these approaches to the analysis of political propaganda. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are discussed, as well as their potential for understanding the nature and impact of political propaganda in modern society. Differences between positivist and psychoanalytic approaches to understanding political propaganda from other contemporary philosophical schools are identified. For instance, from an existentialist perspective, propaganda can be perceived as an attempt to manipulate individual meaning and values, creating an illusion of choice and freedom. Meanwhile, philosophical schools such as Marxism, feminism, and postmodernism also make significant contributions to understanding political propaganda. For example, Marxist analysis reveals the economic and class aspects of propagandistic messages, while the feminist perspective draws attention to gender aspects of manipulating societal consciousness.

Ecocritical and ecofeminist studies have frequently borrowed from Indigenous epistemologies to conform new approaches to human-nature relations, particularly now that the pressing climate crisis is making western societies contemplate the need for radical solutions. As Leanne Betasamosake Simpson remarks, “the western academy is now becoming interested in certain aspects of Indigenous Knowledge” such as “Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)” (373). However, the scope of this interest is reduced and disconnects ecological knowledge from decolonial practices, such as land claims or Indigenous feminisms. Maile Arvin et al. emphatically support that “settler colonialism has been and continues to be a gendered process” (8) and thus its ramifications and effects (upon nature or Indigenous communities) cannot be detangled without an Indigenous feminist perspective. In this article, I focus on an ecocritical analysis of several works by Lee Maracle, who dedicated her career to the regeneration and revalorization of Indigenous systems of knowledge, in order to pinpoint the intersections between feminism, decolonization, and nonhuman ecological thinking that might develop into a potential Indigenous ecofeminism that truly recognizes Indigenous epistemologies in their full context. Basing myself off Nishnaabeg scholar Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s theories on Indigenous radical resurgence, which assert that a cultural resurgence (such as a revalorization of Indigenous ecological knowledge) cannot take place without a political resurgence (such as the acknowledgement of Indigenous sovereignty), I argue that Maracle’s portrayal of natural elements and her imagining of human-nature relations is inextricably linked to a decolonizing perspective foregrounded on Indigenous feminism.

This research investigates the aspect of gender politics and women’s self-identity through the comparative study of Fahmida Riaz’ collection of Poems Four Walls and a Black Veil and Adrienne Rich’s selected poems. Jacques Derrida’s concept of Binary Oppositions in deconstruction theory is the basic framework to conduct the study under feminist perspective. Since the construction of female gender, issues of women identity and their relevance with opposite male gender have raised many questions. The works of these Eastern and Western poets respectively encounter the universal truth of their subjugation as dependent creature in political and social dogmas where females have been assigned fixed gender roles of motherhood, sexuality and partisanship in undesirable pursuit. This classification of the binary assertions can be challenged and re investigated through various contextual lenses. The problem of gender politics and self-identity has been examined under the feminist perspective against structural binary of male/female as the fundamental viewpoint This research raises questions ;how Fahmida Riaz and Adrienne Rich dismantle their dogmatic beliefs, which tools they practice to reject fixed binary oppositions (bisexuality) and rethink feminism, and how concept of transcendence is deconstructed in Eastern and Western literature through social, cultural and political shifts. This research finds out the real practice of gender politics and women identity in both contexts with dissimilar and also a homogeneous approach of the writers in certain aspects. Abstract: The social phenomenon that places women in a lower position than men in power relations is an important issue that is often discussed in the context of the struggle for gender equality. However, women's struggle against attachment to power relations is also a relative and contextual social phenomenon. In the Indian context, women in countries that still maintain patriarchal structures often face difficulties and difficult experiences. Patriarchy refers to a social system that gives greater power and control to men in various aspects of life, including in political, economic, cultural and social matters. Women struggle not to be looked down upon or looked down upon, regardless of their position, profession or social status. Those who feel shackled by patriarchal culture and masculine domination are referred to as the feminist movement. Film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and the characters used as data sources in this study are material objects, while the formal subject of the research is a critical discourse about the characters behind the portrayal of feminism in films. The purpose of this research is to find out the depiction of feminism in the film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’. The researcher uses Roland Barthes' theory to describe the combination of characters and the rules behind them to create meaning from the text. Roland Barthes's levels of meaning are denotation, meaning and myth. In addition, theories and parameters to see the understanding of gender in film, gender analysis and social construction theory by Peter L. Berger & Thomas Luckman. The results of the analysis in this study found that there is a sign of the construction of women in scene film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’. This is the impact of patriarchal culture and structural poverty that occurs in India. Based on the meaning through Barthes' three sign systems; denotation, connotation, and myth found the existence of symbols and signs of representation of liberal feminism in the film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.Keywords: Representation; Feminism; Film; Semiotics.

This paper argues that the slogans “A Woman's Right to Choose” and “The Personal is the Political” typify different traditions within feminist thinking; one emphasizing rights and equality, the other the unconscious and the personal. The author responds to both traditions by bringing together mind and body, and reason and emotion, via the figure of the copula. The copula expresses an alternative model of identity which indicates that value can be produced only in relation.Let us say that the problem is violence. At its most naive: how can the sexual relation, which is supposedly full of love, be violent?I mean the sexual relation in its resonances and ambiguity—to indicate the relation between the sexes, and the relation between lovers. In no way can the relation be confined to love, either heterosexual or homosexual, since it is often a contest. It cannot be reduced solely to a social relation, because in one of its aspects it addresses the most intimate subjectivity. In a certain feminist lifestyle advocacy, those women who are in same sex relations avoid sexual violence by avoiding men, and those who are in heterosexual relationships strive to find the “right kind”—that is, relationships of respectful and supportive love—rejecting all signs of aggression, from sexist disparagement and emotional cruelty to sexual humiliation and physical assault, as “abuse.”Strangely, this dichotomy does not explain the proximity of passion and aggression, whether in love between men and women or in same-sex relationships between feminist women. As rational counsel, it resists the important sense in which the erotic is, and is even valued as, the excess of the rational. And as an analysis of the oppression of women it defeats itself, for to insist on masculinity as violence itself, and/or on the sexual relation as properly governed by reason, seems to miss the point of both love and feminism.Stranger still, feminisms, which set out to address and redress the oppression of women, have become rivalrous themselves. Are these aggressions a legacy of the intellectual world they must take place in (but if so, why is the academic world so full of passion, when it so thoroughly divorces ideas from affects?). Have we overlooked an aspect of the relation between sisters? Feminism has not addressed the question of aggression in feminism as anything more than contamination.Perhaps, after all, the thing that feminism has not yet successfully addressed is love. The “battle between the sexes” has not rendered the ambivalence of the heterosexual relation. As a species of theory, feminism has relished the rigor of distinction and has not found it easy to tolerate the proximity of opposites. And yet, in evoking the body, some feminisms approach closer to this difficulty. It remains to take up the relation between the body and the concept more thoroughly, in order to find out whether sexual difference could ever be philosophical.

In “Conceptions of Care,” Tove Pettersen discusses and articulates select ways in which care can be comprehended. Several difficulties related to an altruistic understanding of care are examined before the author presents the case for a more favorable concept: mature care. Mature care is intended to take into account the interests of both parties to the caring relationship. This understanding of care facilitates the expression of the relational and reciprocal aspects of caring while emphasizing the equal worth of all involved. Also attended to is the embeddedness of care in wider cultural and political contexts.

The research was aimed at reconstructing the media image of feminism which was presented in the most popular Polish magazines dedicated to women in the years 1989–1992. The research time period corresponded to the first stage of the system transformation in Poland. It was initiated by the year in which the Round Table Talks were held and it ended with the adoption of the so-called “Small Constitution” in 1992. There were three detailed questions formulated: 1. How was feminism defined in the Polish women’s press? 2. How often was this topic subject to discussions? 3. Which determinant factors affected the image of feminism depicted by the editorial offices of the women’s press? The text analysis and the content analysis revealed that the image of feminism in the Polish women’s press in the period under study was fragmentary and cultural, historical and political aspects exerted a crucial influence on its structure.

Much of contemporary feminist theory presents itself as radically opposed to liberalism. Certain claims made by Catharine MacKinnon have contributed significantly to this view. In this article, however, I argue that certain fundamental aspects of MacKinnon's work must be understood within a liberal framework, even as she challenges the epistemological assumptions that tend to inform liberal political theories. I highlight the ways in which MacKinnon makes use of several fundamental liberal tenets, such as the primacy of individual choice, and then consider how her work contributes to an ongoing discussion about the relevance of liberal theory to contemporary feminist concerns.

The study highlights the activities of the first domestic female conductors (E. Slavinskaya, O. Berg, V. Dudarova, M. There are several analytical strands through which historians and demographers understand the evolution of twentieth-century population politics and expertise. One is the history of the declining birthrate, nationalism, pro-natalism, and modern degeneration anxieties, including histories of eugenics. A second strand is the story of global overpopulation, its mobilization as a mid-twentieth-century issue in Cold War politics, the dominance of the idea of demographic transitions and political economy, and subsequent links between aid, development, family planning, and various international agencies. A third is the history of reproductive and bodily rights, feminism, and birth control, which has been analyzed with respect to the history of technology, the history of colonialism and neo-colonialism, the history of nationalism, and to some extent the history of internationalism. The political economy aspects of the population question tend chronologically to bookend the feminist narrative, with Malthus at the late eighteenth-century end and Cold War political economy of third world development at the twentieth-century end. A fourth strand is a burgeoning intellectual history of demography, social science, and economic theory.

This article explores the Freewoman’s relation to culture, as well as its role as a countercultural periodical — one that resisted hegemonic ideas and styles — and in the creation of an emotional (counter)community. It follows Raymond Williams’s understanding of culture as having two senses: one is ‘a whole way of life’ — everyday practices — the other arts and other creative endeavours. The Freewoman was cultivating a view of feminism as a way of life that encompassed both these meanings, as its editor, Dora Marsden, encouraged the expression of both traditional and novel perspectives, working to connect everyday life to a vision of a feminist, perhaps utopian, future. My focus here is on three main ideas of culture and community under Williams’s general framework of ‘culture’: cultural resistance and counterculture, cultural citizenship, and emotional countercommunity. These aspects of the Freewoman were central to its feminist politics, and I offer that attention to emotions and emotional communities can enrich our understanding of periodicals and their political workings.

Abstract French lesbian author and theorist Monique Wittig's early contestations of woman as the subject of feminism have played an important role in gender studies in both anglophone and francophone spaces. Since the mid-1990s, French lesbian studies scholars and queer theorists alike have looked to her to anchor their contestations of normative sexuality within a French tradition and counter some of the universalizing aspects of Anglocentric queer theory. As a result, polarizing debates have sprung up over interpretations of Wittigian political lesbianism, typically focusing on divergent readings of her theorization of sex and gender between radical lesbians on the one hand and queer theorists on the other. However, far less attention has been paid to the implications of such debates for transgender studies. Since she has been claimed by trans-exclusionary radical feminists as well as by queer and materialist transfeminists in France, her legacy serves as a rich site through which to understand how the ideological conflicts between those groups relate to feminist history. Taking as a point of departure the appropriation of her name by the anti-trans group Résistance Lesbienne (Lesbian Resistance) that took over the 2021 Paris Pride March, this article fleshes out the implications of her work concerning the place of transgender people, and especially transgender women, in feminist spaces. Ultimately, it is her complexity that makes her a crucial figure for transgender studies insofar as she elucidates French “gender-critical” feminism and its transfeminist critics.

Through the examination of the artwork of Maria Berrio, parallels are drawn between her work, entitled El Cielo Tiene Jardines, and the 2019 political climate under Donald Trump. With the intention of linking the rise of feminism to Trump’s presence in office as president of the United States, specifically through examples of his sexism, narcissism and preference for patriarchy, this is approached through the metaphors of Berrio’s painting. In retaliation to the upswing of sexism, narcissism and patriarchy coming from the White House, each element examined in the artwork is meant to describe the relationship to Donald Trump’s personality cult as well as the corresponding reaction of anti-Trumpian groups, particularly feminists, as well as prescribers to psychoanalytic theory. Examples are cited from Trump’s presence in the media, including tweets, personal statements and historical evidence supporting the arguments made. Topics of neo-colonialism, the American Dream and the generalization of the female desire to remove herself from the submissive role of patriarchal assignment are also discussed. With what was being hailed as Third Wave Feminism, beginning with the Woman’s March of 2017, these aspects of Trumpian character and behaviour are described through the model of Berrio’s stunning mix-media painting and are meant to appeal to readers through both feminist and psychoanalytical analyses.

This research investigates gender inequality in Anna Burns' novel Milkman. Burns' novel is depiction of the ways in which women are exploited through capitalism. It highlights the role of powerful institutions and absence of women in those power structures that ultimately makes women the slaves of patriarchs. The novel also explores the ways in which women are exploited, controlled and crushed by political and institutional power. This study discusses the debates surrounding Marxist feminism and the ways in which Marxist feminism can be mobilized as an analytical tool to engage women centric novels such as Anna Burns's Milkman along the thematic lines of objectification, commodification, capitalism, institutionalized patriarchy, the panopticon, and gender inequality. This study develops a hermeneutical Marxist feminism to evaluate the thematic concerns in Anna Burns' Milkman. In doing so, this research reveals how this novel based on gendered oppression and violence dramatizes and expands the core aspects of objectification and dehumanization developed by both Marxism and feminism. This study is indebted to Engle's conceptualization of economic independence in Marxism as it interprets gender inequality in the context of capitalism. This study situates Marxist feminism as a critical reading approach to understand gender-based oppression and inequality and proposes an anti-capitalist future for women's empowerment. A society is a group where both men and women co-exist, keeping the ride rolling. The best way for a woman to define her presence is to have equal access to high-quality education, political participation and empowerment. Nepal has faced high rates of woman trafficking to India for a long time. Various efforts were made but the rate did not decrease. This article intended to examine this phenomenon by examining the transnational feminist network (TFN), such as The Global Alliance Against Women Trafficking (GAAWT). GAAWT focuses on changes in the political, economic, social, legal system and structures related to the practice of trafficking in women by using a human rights approach to people who are regulated, non-discriminatory, uphold equality and uphold the principles of accountability, participation, and inclusiveness in the methodology, organizational structure and procedures. This study utilizes qualitative methods and transnational feminism theoretical framework. The result shows that GAAWT TFN has played a role in overcoming the issue of trafficking of Nepalese women to India by voicing the human rights of women in Nepal with a human rights approach. Even so, the trafficking of Nepalese women to India is still high. Therefore, evaluating approaches that pay attention to cultural aspects as well as various political identities at play can increase the effectiveness of TFN.

AbstractThis article rethinks the hegemonic “sex-work” discourses—popular sex-work discourse and radical-feminist discourse—that associate Japanese night work with prostitution and consider young women workers in this industry as victims. These discourses reinforce sex-work oppression–empowerment paradigms, which limit workers’ experiences to either oppressive/empowering, good/bad, and positive/negative. This research draws on transnational feminism and a polymorphous approach to the complex nature of sex work. In doing so, this article addresses three aspects of Japanese night work, including young Japanese women’s motivation to go into night work, their conceptualization of work they engage in, and shakai-keiken (social experience) that they gain out of doing night work. This article encourages readers to step away from dominant Western discourses and look closely at the nuanced nature of Japanese night work in its own context.

This article uses the hegemonic/counter-hegemonic framework of Italian scholar and activist Antonio Gramsci to explain how a movement known as social justice feminism emerged as a counter-hegemonic response to two hegemonic concepts established in and continued, respectively, the post-Civil War United States: laissez-faire industrial capitalism and patriarchal dominance. In four stages from 1899 through 1940, social justice feminists pursued the promotion of an “entering wedge” labor legislation strategy and the increasing participation of women in national politics, particularly in the Democratic Party. While substantially successful in its goals, social justice feminism failed in two important aspects: its inability to work independently of a patriarchal political system, and, most significant, its apparent refusal to include women of color.

Indigenous women are, therefore, in dialogue with important pillars of decolonial thought in Latin America based on race, ethnicity and gender inequalities. They are also in dialogue with the ideas of Mother Earth and ‘Land as Pedagogy’ (‘Land-based Pedagogy’) following an anti-anthropocentric movement in favor of our common home. This article is less about their particular ontological regimes (which we could call culture) and more about the political decision of which aspects of these "cultures" can be leveraged in order to build political alliances. It concerns stories about illnesses and continued pandemics, but also about the re-enchantment for life: about things we ignore as a colonial collectivity. In the words of indigenous women, it’s about indigenizing and reforesting hearts.Indigenous Women. Body-territory. Buen Vivir (Good living). Decolonization. Pluralism. The problems of interdisciplinary research in social sciences and the inseparability of the ideological component from socio-political knowledge, which largely contributes to the crisis of the social sciences, are analyzed. Also considered are the issues of the narrowness of a strictly disciplinary approach in social sciences, insufficient preliminary articulation of ontological foundations in socio-political studies, as well as the low demand for fundamental elaboration in applied disciplines, leading to their gradual transformation into “secret knowledge” with its own special language inaccessible for the “profane majority”. The authors debate with the position of political philosopher B.G. Kapustin on the problem of interdisciplinary and the concept of “civilization”. It is argued that the opponent contradicts his own definition of interdisciplinary when he considers “civilization” as a “worldview construct”, because the local-civilizational approach per se is a classic example of interdisciplinary research. The debate with liberal feminism is also presented. This field non-reflexively dominates Russian gender studies to such an extent that it leads to a shift in priorities and loss of “common sense”. A critical analysis of its main postulates, which have remained virtually unchanged despite historical changes, shows that interdisciplinary approach makes it possible to solve practical problems facing society based on a synthesis, for example, of civilizational and gender approaches.

Kata kunci: perempuan Melayu, posisi Perempuan Melayu, penerimaan masyarakat, feminisme kritikal Abstract In the theatre script of Tiang Seri Tegak Berlima , it was made known that the men in Malay society are strong and powerful. The role they played was not just restricted to aspects of religion, in fact, it encompassed culture, social, economy and even the political aspects of the society. This situation becomes an important issue in the script written by Dato’ Noordin Hassan. Apart from explaining the nature of men, this script also discusses the symbolic positioning of Malay women through the character of Siti Muhsinat. With reference to this character in the script, this paper discusses the issue of Malay women’s positioning and the role they play in society, as well as society’s response towards Malay women’s ability to perform their symbolic roles. To address these two issues, this article employs the theory of critical feminism through the mode of qualitative narrative analysis in order to reveal that men tend to utilise cultural and religious symbols as tools to dominate women. Open Data has become a prominent ideal in humanitarian information work and is increasingly promoted for crisis situations to increase effectiveness, accountability, and empower citizens. However, like all socio-technical systems, open data platforms for disasters make implicit and explicit assumptions about data, data users, disasters, and the context of use. In this paper, we turn to feminist theory to examine three open data projects rolled out in the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. We used the seven principles of Data Feminism introduced by D'Ignazio and Klein to design an evaluative framework for the three projects. We use this framework to highlight and link the socio-political nature of both disasters and open data platforms. In our results, we highlight significant gaps in how these projects made labor (in)visible, engaged with affective aspects of disaster, addressed context, and challenged power. We argue that these gaps are reflective of dominant practices in open data for disasters and serve as opportunities for designers and crisis informatics researchers to reimagine the potential of such projects. We propose four ways of doing so based on feminist principles and values.

The world today is troubled by socio-political and ecological problems. These problems include corruption, terrorism, wars, violence, modern-day slavery, deforestation, desertification, marine, and atmospheric pollution, climate change, and so forth. In the pursuit of solutions to these myriads of problems, different solutions such as environmentalism, socialism, communism, capitalism, anarchy, feminism, and many others have been proposed. This paper argues that there are aspects of the concept of ancestorship that can contribute to ameliorating these problems. It is in this light that the paper will examine the concept of ancestorship among the Urhobo people of the Nigeria Delta and as opined by the Chinese philosopher, Confucius. The paper finds that the concept of ancestorship in these two traditions is still relevant. It concludes that adherence and emulation of viable aspects of ancestorship can help in resolving socio-political and ecological problems in the contemporary world

The special issue Doing Memory, Doing Identity: Politics of the Everyday in Contemporary Global Communities draws on anthropological theory, performance studies, feminism, post-colonial studies and other theoretical traditions for an insightful examination of the everyday practices of doing memory. A series of ethnographies and qualitative studies from locations as diverse as Italy, Norway, Greece, France, Brazil and China complement profound theoretical analyses to investigate the multiple links between individual and collective pasts, futures and identities, especially focusing on emotions, embodiment, the senses, difference and power relations. Taking a critical stance in regard to current social-scientific and socio-political debates, this special issue reflects on the political and ethical aspects of day-to-day memory practices and examines issues related to identity, imagination and otherness.
