Повний текст джерелаMarine shaft lines undergo complex cyclic loadings. In order to characterize these structures in fatigue, two complementary objectives are achieved. Firstly, the marine shaft’s loads are characterized in order to identify relevant fatigue cycles. During this step, an original parametric fatigue design method is implemented. This method is based on the definition of an equivalent load considering multiaxiality, variability, non-proportionality and mean stress. This method allows to distinguish two damage modes with a mode associated with the established cyclic regime of rotary bending and a mode associated with the ship’s maneuvers. Secondly, a rapid characterization method is implemented to characterize in fatigue the marine shafts’ steels for a large number of loading configurations. The method is based on a model which enables fatigue identification behaviors from self-heating measurements. The steels of the study are characterized in tension-torsion for various configurations of mean stress and nonproportionality of the loading. In this context, the notion of iso-self-heating surfaces is introduced. It allows, for a specimen, to model the elastoplastic and dissipative behavior of the material in the dedicated stress space. Their use makes it possible to define a multiscale fatigue criterion based on the invariants of the stress tensor. In the study, a modeling of the behavior of the material is proposed for very low amplitude loads (VHCF) exhibiting a strong difference in dissipation compared to the regime of higher amplitudes (i.e. HCF domain)

Повний текст джерелаThe objective of the work presented here is to elaborate a numerical model which can predict the thenmal behaviour and the efficiency of power gearing transmission. The thenmal networks method has been used. This method consists in dividing the geared unit into isothenmal elements and connecting these elements by thenmal resistances which depend on the kind of heat transfer encountered (conduction, convection, radiation). Seme elements of the network represent heat sources and the heat generated is linked to power losses which occur in a gearing transmission. The following sources of power lasses are laken into account : friction due to the meshing c gear teeth, lasses in bearings, friction in shaft seals and in gearbox synchronizer sets, losses due to cil churning. As far as cil churning lasses are concerned, a specifie test rig has been used to study this dissipation source and seme original fonmulations are proposed to quantify the heat generated. The originality of the model thal has been developed lies in the nodal decomposition : each element is considered as having a basic shape. Then classical correlations are used to quantify heat transfers, and it allows to simulate the thermal behaviour of any geared unit. A computational program has been designed in order to solve simultaneously power lasses and thermal calculations. Steady-state and transient problems can be solved. Seme measurements have been carried out with Iwo different power trains transmissions : a manual six-speed gearbox and an industrial gear unit. The results of these experiments show thal the numerical model allows to predict with a good accuracy the thermal behaviour and the efficiency

Повний текст джерелаThis work has been done in collaboration between the LTDS and the ESI-Software company. The aim is to develop a new direct method for the modelling of the strong physical coupling between magnetodynamic and thermo-metallurgical problems in order to numerically simulate induction hardening process. Usually, the classical indirect method is used to solve such coupled problems. We have proposed to use a new direct method as far as the source current is sinusoidal. Thus, non-linear magnetodynamic and thermal problems are solved together in the same finite element and the resolution of the magnetodynamic problem rests on the harmonic balance (or multi-harmonic) finite element formulation (HBFEM). Residual mechanical stresses and strains at the end of the treatment can be therefore calculated from the temperature and phase distributions

Повний текст джерелаThermal performance of silicon micro heat pipe (MHP) arrays have been studied experimentally and numerically in the present work. A numerical model has been developed in order to simulate the hydrodynamic and thermal behaviour of a water MHP array, whose cross sectional area is triangular. Capillary limit, optimal fluid charge and temperature profiles can be determined according to the geometry. Several silicon MHP arrays have been designed and realised (with the collaboration of LPM and LPCS). The MHP array is made of two silicon wafers of 350 µm thick. V-grooves have been micromachined in the first one using an anisotropic wet-chemical etching (KOH). On the second wafer, used to close the MHP (by fusion bonding with the first wafer), polysilicon thermistors are deposited on the external side. Two experimental set up have been realised for the experimental study. The first one permits to degass the fluid, to charge the MHP array and to measure the charge ; the other one is used to determine the thermal performances of several MHP arrays. For a MHP array made of three wafers and filled with methanol, the temperature profiles and the heat load allow to determine, using a 3D-model, the effective thermal conductivity. Comparing with a silicon wafer (with a same thickness), a noticeable increase in the effective thermal conductivity (about 300 %) is obtained

Повний текст джерелаIn the metallurgy industry, the cooling is a fundamental stage which allows to bring certain qualities to materials (mechanical resistance, flexibility). The impact of a spray is one known process but it is not well understood, limiting its today's scopes. This thesis aims at developing a simulation procedure, in order to obtain a useful numerical tool for the study and the future optimization of the spray cooling. Literature highlights the multitude of the mechanisms of spray cooling, but also the few existing information linking these mechanisms and the characteristics of the spray (diameter, speed and space distribution of droplets). In order to simulate the spray cooling, one proposes to split this process in two stages, the spray flow and the calculation of the cooling. Based on the literature, a correlation on the density of flow of heat removed from the plat is used to link the two stages. A full spray characterization is realized thanks to several experimental tools: Phase Doppler Analyser, speed-camera, measure of surface liquid flow density. Key elements required to characterize and also to initialize the spray in the simulation, are highlighted as well. The method of initialization, the numerical configuration (Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation, RANS k-ω turbulence model), as well as the domain of calculation are validated with the simulation of a free-fall spray. The method is then used to calculate characteristics of the spray in the presence of a surface. Finally, the cooling of plate is simulated, bringing results on the heat flow density removed from the plate in accordance with characteristics of the spray. Main results concern the highlighting of major points of simulation communally used but leading to error in the cooling simulation

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis adresses the industrial problem of blade-tip / abradable coating interaction in aircraft engine leading to divergent dynamic response of blades. Even if it is well known that the dynamic behavior of the structure plays a key role on the divergence, wear and heating seem necessary to amplify vibratory motion leading to blade damage. In this multi-physic context the aim of this work is to provide explanations on the origins of the divergence by introducing thermomechanical phenomena. The work is divided in 2 parts. First, an energy balance at the rubbing contact is established through experimental analysis of interactions on a simplified test rig, coupled with inverse simulation models for heat flows estimation. The proposed method highlights different energy partitions between the blade and the abradable coating depending of the activation of different wear mechanisms. On the other hand, a thermomecanical strategy is developed for the simulation of blade-abradable rubbing events taking account of specific issues : different time scales between thermal and mechanical phenomena, generation and partition of heat flows at the interface, contact resolution, wear effects, thermal expansion and complex boundary conditions. Several divergent cases are investigated on the basis of comparison with experimental results available on compressor. It is shown that thermomechanical effects are sometimes overriding or conversely relegated to a more distant role, depending on the initial conditions of interaction. The competition of phenomena acting upon contact (thermal expansions, wear, etc.) is clearly demonstrated and certain aspects remain open to perspectives

Повний текст джерелаThe objective of this study is to introduce a passive heat transfer system whose performance will be optimized to reduce the effect of humidity in bio-sourced building materials and particularly in cob mixes. The studied technology is heat pipes combining heat transfer through phase change and flexibility of application whether for heating as in this study or for cooling as it is common in passive cooling application. This solution enables an effective thermal management with easiness, without compaction nor energy consumption. The heat pipe is in fact a closed device generally designed using copper with an internal wick structure allowing the circulation of the fluid between the heating zone (evaporator) and the cooled zone (condenser). Different experimental set ups were built in the laboratory to first characterize the thermal properties of cob mixes, then, to study the heat transfer in different porous and microchannel heat pipes and after to study the application of heat pipes in these cob mixes based on a standardized method for hydrothermal construction materials characterization. Many experimental studies are introduced by investigation the effect of several parameters. The influence of the fill ratio, type of working fluid, and type of internal structure, dimensions, geometry, and the effect of input heat flux are detailed and analyzed. In parallel, thermal and hydraulic mathematical models have been developed to predict the performance of the porous and microchannel heat pipe. A comparison with the experimental results is also carried out allowing a verification of the models. In addition, an optimization study is introduced by comparing the performance of different heat pipes and studying the effect of using PCMs on the evaporator and condenser side. Finally, the application of heat pipes in buildings is evaluated by investigating experimentally the integration of heat pipes in cob mixes. The study is carried out in a climatic chamber simulating different cycles of humidity variation in order to assess the effect of the heat pipe on the hydrothermal performance of this material

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis deals with the numerical prediction of heat and mass transfer impact on the air quality and thermal comfort within either ventilated or not cavities filled with pollutants. Indeed, ventilated areas are first modeled to be as ventilated cavities in a first approximation. To carry out this study, we adopt a numerical model based on solving equations governing momentum, heat and mass transfer. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to some generalities on ventilation, air quality and thermal comfort and the bibliographic review of previous works. The adopted approach is described in Chapter 2. It is based on the Boussinesq approximation. The RNG k-ε model is used to handle turbulence. The finite-volume method (FVM) is used to discretize of the set of equations, and the pressure-velocity coupling is achieved via the SIMPLEC algorithm. In the second part, we consider the thermal convection and thermosolutal convection in closed cavities. The main aim is a) to validate the considered model by comparing our results with those of literature, and b) to investigate influence of the thermal Rayleigh number and the buoyancy ratio. Our findings indicate that the model accurately predicts heat and mass transfer. Then, we apply this approach to the case of two-dimensional ventilated cavities subjected to temperature and concentration gradients. The indices of air quality and ventilation efficiency are calculated and discussed. We end this work by analyzing the influence of ventilation on the quality of indoor air in a three-dimensional room in transient regime. This investigation covers different scenarios from the simple flow mechanical ventilation which aims to find the best configuration in terms of efficiency and quality of indoor air

Повний текст джерелаThe manufacture of automotive aluminum parts with complex shapes such as cylinder heads of the engine by the casting process is carried out by the insertion of cores made with sand hardened using organic resins (binders) in a metal mold and pouring of molten metal in this mold. As a result of the high temperature of poured metal, organic resins undergo thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) and produce gases which impair the quality of the parts to be manufactured. Until recently, the study of gas emissions occurring during the casting process was based on experimental tests. The purpose of this work is to study the gas emissions by numerical simulation. To do this, we proposed several numerical models. We introduced a kinetic model for the thermal decomposition of organic resins. We have developed a general model of multiphase flow in porous media using the method of volume averaging. Four models of gas emissions representing flow and transport of gas in the core under different scenarios are given from the general model. Models are also developed to describe the coupling of the heat transfer in the mold and the casting with gas emissions in the sand core. The implementation of the various models in the free software OpenFOAM provides a simulation tool that allows to simulate gas emissions under different scenarios and to study the impact of several factors such as the type of resins, core shape, the permeability of the sand on the evolution of the pressure of gas in the core

Повний текст джерелаThe evaporation process of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in LNG vessel tanks is closely related to heat infiltration through the walls of the insulation and also to the sloshing of the liquid in the tank. Most of the models developed give predictions assuming a constant evaporation rate or BOR Design. Real evaporation depends on many more physical parameters because LNG is a multi-component mixture consisted essentially of methane, stored at its boiling point of about -161 °C at atmospheric pressure. A detailed zero-dimensional (0D) dynamic tool that enables one to evaluate the thermal transfers and thermodynamic properties in LNG carrier tanks has been developed. The model is used to investigate the variation of the LNG and BOG quantity, composition and thermodynamic properties during typical voyage profiles of a case study LNG carrier or Operational BOR concept. The principle of the operational Boil-Off Rate (Operational BOR in this paper) is different from the design BOR. The design BOR is a benchmark of the thermal performance of the insulation under standard environmental conditions in a stationary configuration, translated into daily evaporation rate for pure methane. Conversely, the Operational BOR which is an unsteady calculation of the thermal and thermodynamic state of LNG, is designed to measure the amount of boil-off gas produced during the navigation taking into account the actual environmental conditions. A correlations studies carried out in the model gave results with relative errors between 2% and 5% of natural BOG between observation and simulation

Повний текст джерелаThe structural evolution of residential buildings due to thermal, environmental regulations and roll out of the Construction Products Regulation generate major challenge for chimney manufacturers, in particular with regard to the safety of residents during a fire. Two fire resistance scenarios are eloquent in European Regulations: the one associated with the development of fire in the room where the chimney is located and the last reported on the development of fire in the chimney itself, by ignition of the deposits. In both cases, the chimney must not be a vector for propagating fire to adjacent rooms and combustible materials. In this context, the present study aims to characterize the main thermal transfers involved in the two scenarios and to better understand the kinetics of formation, decomposition, ignition and combustion of the deposits within the chimney. To do this, an experimental and numerical approach was adopted. The experimental part allows to determine the chemical characteristics (elemental and chemical analyzes) and thermo-physical characteristics (density, conductivity, effusivity and thermal capacity, porosity, calorific value) of 24 residues from real installations or created in laboratory under representative conditions of combustion. These residues are then studied in thermogravimetric analyzers (TGA) and Cone Calorimeters in order to determine the thermal decomposition steps as well as the flammability and combustibility properties, in cases of piloted and auto-ignition. A consequent database of the set of properties has then been generated. A fire-resistant furnace (according to EN 1366-13) allowed the study of the chimney participation in the propagation of fire from one room to another, through the measurement of temperature fields, above the ceiling. The tests allow the acquisition of data essential to the definition of the initial conditions and the limits necessary for the development and the validation of a numerical model developed under Fluent. This model describes heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. It makes possible to estimate the temperature level on the outer wall of the chimney above the furnace, which is required in the EI performance declaration tests according to EN 1366-13, regardless of the configuration of the chimney (diameter, materials...). The results obtained correspond to the need for Poujoulat, whose challenge is to have an experimental and numerical tool for the development of fire-resistant chimney and a database relating to deposits in order to advise the habitants

Повний текст джерелаInternational energy context requires a new orientation to the building sector as in construction or in renovation. Any new solution must be technically efficient and environmentally acceptable. In this thesis, the object is to achieve a numerical and experimental analysis of a building biobased materials. Some of these materials are included from the study of a transborder project to the Lorraine region (France, Belgium and Luxembourg). Indeed an Ecotransfaire project was included in this work. This project has been oriented to the development of a sustainable eco materials chain. A process of analysis has been established in order to select the materials candidates on the basis of scientific, geographical and environmental criteria. The answers are moving towards the integration of bio-based materials. These materials are subject of several heat and mass transfers phenomena. So understanding these mechanisms within a building material has been achieved firstly. This resulted on a coupled model of heat transfer, air, moisture experienced by the HAM model. This model is applied to a wooden building material whose its structure is assumed homogeneous. Then, this model was implemented and solved by the finite element method. Its numerical solution is validated by analytical results available in the literature. The study of sensitivity of the model coupling, dimensions in space, the boundary conditions and the variability of input parameters is also presented. One of the difficulties of using this model is the case of heterogeneous materials. Thus, in this work, we propose an approach of characterization of a heterogeneous lignocellulosic composite material with a porous structure. In fact, this material is composed of two components: Wood and cement. The wood is presented by a shapes aggregates with irregulars sizes and the cement is considered as the binder in the composition. The object was to predict its equivalent intrinsic properties (thermal conductivity and vapor permeability) by using the micro-tomography techniques. The methodology consists to determine the structure of the sample by taking images at the microscopic scale. Once the structure of the sample is generated, we will conduct from a reconstruction of the two-dimensional representation to a three dimensional structure by using a numerical tool which determines the equivalent properties of the 3D reconstructed domain. The permeability as well as the equivalent thermal conductivity are the two properties evaluated in this configuration. These two properties are strongly depend to the porosity and to pore distribution in the continuous phase (the solid one). Moreover the composition of the material and the volume fractions of each components influence the formation of microstructure and consequently the thermal and hydric transfers

Повний текст джерелаThe work of this thesis concerns the study of the thermal diffusion phenomena to have a model (white box approach) for the analysis, the frequency synthesis and the time validation of robust commands. The Part 1 composed of chapter 1 focuses on the definitions and the interpretations of the integro-differential non-integer operator. The simulation problem in the time domain of the fractional differential systems is specified. Part 2 entitled "Analytical Study" includes two chapters whose objective is to make a detailed analysis of the fractional order behavior, first in a semi-infinite medium (chapter 2), then in a finite medium (chapter 3). Part 3, entitled "Numerical simulation of time responses" combining two chapters (4 and 5), aims the implementation of the "thermal process" plant (model validation of a finite medium) of a simulator of the thermal control loop time responses

Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis, the role of thermal radiation in aluminum-air flames propagation is studied. The subject being complex and of industrial interest, it requires the coupling of many physiochemical phenomena to accurately predict the consequences of dust explosions. A thorough literature review is proposed about the ignition and the combustion of aluminum particles and about the available theoretical models of dust flames propagation. The specific question of the nature of thermal exchanges and the influence of thermal radiation is studied. The bibliographic review underlines the simplifying assumptions and hypotheses used in the literature making possible the definition of improvement areas. Because of the limited amount of knowledge available to address these questions, a numerical tool “RADIAN” is developed enabling an accurate coupling between the different modes of heat exchange and combustion. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is used to numerically model the radiative exchanges between particles and the gas-particle thermal conduction. The Finite Difference method is used to numerically model the thermal conduction through the gas phase and combustion. A radiative model based on Mie theory for radiation-particles interactions is incorporated. The results of the simulations are compared with available analytical solutions and experimental data. An original experimental study is also conducted to measure the distribution of irradiance ahead of the flame front and the laminar burning velocity for methane-air-Sic, methane-air-alumina and Al-air flames. A good agreement between numerical simulations and experiments is demonstrated. The Beer-Lambert’s law for radiative transfer in front of the flame front is found to be inapplicable and a new analytical solution is proposed. The presence of absorbing particles may promote the flame propagation. In particular, it is shown experimentally and confirmed theoretically/numerically that Al-air rich mixtures are likely to rapidly accelerate

Повний текст джерелаIn addition to electrical, magnetic, vibro-acoustic and mechanical aspects, thermal considerations must be taken into account during the design and optimization of electrical machines. This study focuses on the analysis and the simulation of the thermal behavior of Totally Enclosed Non Ventilated (TENV) electric machines, specifically a Synchro-reluctant motor (Synchrel) in the context of an automotive application : a clutch actuator. A detailed thermal model (MTD) describing the thermal behavior of the Synchrel machine is designed. This proposed MTD is based on a combination of the Lumped Parameter Thermal Network method (LPTN) and the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. The first method is dedicated to model the conductive and radiative heat transfers. CFD techniques are dedicated to model the cooling mechanism based on the natural convection around the Synchrel machine. Since the critical temperature is very sensitive to the cooling mode, the CFD approach is used in this study to provide more accurate results. On the other hand, it requires considerable computing time, which prevents its use in design studies based on optimization methods. In order to overcome this problem, only some numerical results obtained for particular operating points are used to define an analytical correlation based on the numerical calculation relations. This numerical analysis goes with an experimental approach in order to elaborate the corresponding experimental correlations. This study shows that numerical solutions can present a good accuracy, if uncertainty data introduced by this approach are taken into account. The second research problem addressed in this study is the determination of the Contact Thermal Resistances (RTCs), which are key parameters in the definition of the MTD. The determination procedure of the RTCs is based on two parametric identification approaches. The first one is experimental and based on some observations of the thermal behavior of the machine. The second one is based on a mathematical model reduction approach. The determined values are consistent with results from literature, although the Synchrel machine differs in topology, size and power. Using the numerical correlations, the MTD is used to evaluate the temperature deviation due to error terms introduced by the CFD approach. Then, using these experimental correlations, the MTD’s quality can be checked and approved. Parametric identification approaches lead to the construction of two secondorder thermal models of the machine. These models allow monitoring the thermal behavior of the winding and the casing. Both simplified models show satisfactory predictability with respect to their great simplicity
