The ingestion of L-tryptophan (LT) was linked with the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) in the fall of 1989. The pathology is a microangiopathy consisting of endothelial cell dysfunction and invasion of blood vessels by lymphocytes. Perimysial, fascial, and dermal perivascular lymphocytes and eosinophils are present. A contaminant in the manufacturing process of LT has been identified as the di-L-tryptophan aminal of acetaldehyde. This report describes the electron microscopic appearance of the microangiopathy and the phenotyping of the inflammatory infiltrate by immunohistochemistry.Muscle, fascia, and skin biopsies from 21 affected individuals were rapidly frozen for light microscopy, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry. For electron microscopy tissues were preserved in 4% formaldehyde-1% glutaraldehyde with post-fixation in osmium tetroxide. Thin sections were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate and examined in a JEOL 100CX electron microscope. Eight anlisera were used for the immunohistochemistry to identify lymphocyte subsets and macrophages. The markers were CD-2 (pan T), CD-3 (pan T), CD-4 (T helper), CD-5 (T helper), CD-8 (T suppressor), CD-19 (B cell), CD- 22 (B cell), and CD-68 (macrophage). Three high power fields were examined from the dermis, fascia, and muscle from eight biopsies counting the immunoperoxidase labelled cells for each marker.

In this article I examine, within their historical context, eleven editorial commentaries by Leonardo Sciascia published in 1940–1941 in di guardia!, the bi-weekly publication of the Fasci di Combattimento di Caltanissetta. These opinion pieces deal almost exclusively with foreign policy. Consideration of them within their here and now allows me to compare and contrast the image of the youthful Sciascia that emanates directly from the pages of di guardia! with the myriad autobiographical statements the writer made in hindsight and in support of a public self-image crafted and honed over the four decades following the end of the Second World War. A cornerstone of that image is an antifascist awakening catalyzed by the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Yet Sciascia’s contributions to di guardia!—all perfectly in line with typical Fascist war propaganda—paint the portrait of a young man who is very much in agreement with Mussolini’s foreign policy, suggesting that the writer’s conversion to anti-Fascism took place in the period following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and during the Allied occupation of Sicily. I also cast into relief how Sciascia, as his public self-image evolved, utilized writing strategies—atypical syntactical structures and rhetorical devices such as the pluralis maiestatis—designed to objectify the subjective. In this way he convinces his readers, in a very subtle, almost imperceptible way, to align their perspective of the past with his.

This paper discusses the impact of Romano Lazzeroni’s scholarship on Historical Linguistics and Indo-European studies altogether, by analyzing his groundbreakingworks and long-lasting legacy in relation to the state of the art and current research on four main questions: 1. morphosyntax/semantics interface; 2. linguistic andcultural reconstruction; 3. linguistic categorization; 4. language change. A portrait of Romano Lazzeroni as a brilliant and unique Teacher is also provided, as a modest token of gratitude to a giant of science and big-hearted Mentor.

The article maps the relationship between the Italian Futurist movement and fascism from a general perspective. It deals with the relationship between the leader of Futurism F. T. Marinetti and Benito Mussolini from the beginning of their cooperation in 1915 to the end of the Second World War. Throughout its era, Futurism identified itself with Italy’s social and political climate. Futurism was one of the ideological sources for fascism and it was one of the movements that formed Fasci di Combattimento in 1919. But after Mussolini came to power, fascist cultural politics aesthetically preferred traditionalism, order, and a return to the achievements of history, a contemporary rappel à l’ordre, and Futurism found itself in cultural dissent. Marinetti thus spent the rest of his life trying to improve the position of modernist artists in fascist Italy, which would earn Futurism recognition of the official state art of the fascist regime.

Background:Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) is a multifaceted disease with various clinical domains. A number of composite indices has been developed recently [1, 2]. DAPSA (Disease Activity in PSoriatic Arthritis) is the valid instrument for assessment of PsA activity focused on peripheral arthritis. But other factors can influence on PsA activity and haven’t studied yet. Objectives:to identify factors that are associated with PsA activity based on the data from RU-PsART cohort.Methods:117 (M/F=63(54%)/54(46%)) patients (pts) with active PsA fulfilling the CASPAR criteria mean age 44.3 ± 10.9 yrs, mean DAPSA 37.8±21.4, mean PsA duration 73.4±78.4 mo, mean PsO duration 213.4±152.5 mo, were included. Data was collected from 43 rheumatology centers of the Russian Federation. All pts underwent standard clinical examination of PsA activity at enrollment. DAPSA, ESR (mm/h), CRP (mg/L), dactylitis, enthesitis by LEI plus Plantar Fascia, BSA (%), HAQ-DI and fatigue by Fatigue Scale (V.4) FACIT (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy), BMI (kg/m2) were evaluated. DAPSA > 28 indicate high activity. Multi-dimensional step-by-step discriminant analysis was used to identify a group of features that are associated with high PsA activity by DAPSA. M±SD, %, OR 95% (CI) were performed. Results:The following features proved to be the most informative: LEI (p=0.739), tenderness of the Plantar Fascia (p=0.003), age (p=0.0004), FACIT (p=0.092), PsA duration >2 yrs (p=0.013), BSA>3% (p=0.021), Nail PsO (p=0.092), BMI (kg/m2) (p=0.22). The area under the ROC-curve (AUC) 0.768, 95% CI (0.624-0.913). Sensitivity/ Specificity of model 77.0%/ 69% accordingly (Figure 1).Figure 1ROC analysis of the Sensitivity and Specificity of the model. Conclusion:Weight, enthesitis, skin and nail PsO severity, fatigue and PsA duration >2 yrs are associated with high PsA activity as well as articular symptoms. New combination indices based on these features should be developed and validated in clinical practice.References:[1]Helliwell P, et al. Background:Enthesitis is one of the hallmark of psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Ultrasound (US) accurately detects morphostructural abnormalities indicative of entheseal inflammation and structural damage. Interestingly, in a recent study, US-detected entheseal pathology appeared to be a potential marker of disease severity, being associated with higher radiographic score of structural damage at peripheral joint level. (1) However, a sub-analysis of the impact of each elementary finding of US enthesitis was not performed. Moreover, some US entheseal abnormalities (hypoechogenicity, thickening and calcification/enthesophyte) have been described as frequent findings in healthy subjects and patients with dysmetabolic conditions, undermining their specificity. (2) Thus, we hypothesized that their role as a sonographic biomarker of joint disease severity could be questioned. Objectives:The main aim of the present study was to explore the association between the US elementary findings of enthesitis defined by OMERACT [i.e. hypoechogenicity, thickening, Doppler signal, calcification/enthesophyte and bone erosion at enthesis] (3) and the presence of US-detected joint bone erosions in patients with PsA.Methods:Consecutive patients with PsA (CASPAR criteria) were included in this cross-sectional single-centre study. The scanning protocol included bilateral assessment of the main entheses of the lower limbs [plantar fascia, quadriceps, patellar (proximal and distal) and Achilles tendons]. The presence of US joint bone erosions was investigated in the following areas: 2nd and 5th metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, ulnar head and 5th metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, bilaterally, as well as the most inflamed joint at the physical examination. The US examination was carried out with a 6-18 MHz probe. Univariate and multivariate logistic analysis were performed to identify predictors of US joint bone erosions. Results:A total of 74 PsA patients were enrolled. The mean disease duration was 7.9±8.0 years. Joint bone erosions were found in 36/75 patients (48.0%), and in 71/600 joints (11.8%), most frequently in the 5th MTP joint (in 26/75 patients, 34.7%). The univariate analysis showed that entheseal bone erosions [odds ratio (OR) 27.1, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.3-220.2, p value <0.01] and Doppler signal (OR 3.5, 95% CI 1.3 - 9.4, p value 0.01) were associated with joint bone erosions. Only entheseal bone erosions remained significantly associated with joint bone erosions in the multivariate analysis (Table 1).Table 1.Multivariate regression analysis: predictive value of the entheseal US findings for the presence of joint bone erosions.OR (95% CI)P valueHypoechogenicity0.5 (0.1-3.4)0.45Thickening2.2 (0.6-8.3)0.27Doppler signal3.2 (0.9-10.8)0.06Calcification/enthesophyte1.1 (0.1-11.2)0.99Entheseal bone erosion24.2 (2.7-216.2)<0.01Conclusion:Entheseal bone erosion and, to a lesser extent, Doppler signal, were the only entheseal abnormalities correlated with the presence of US-detected joint bone erosions, representing potential sonographic biomarkers of disease severity in PsA.References:[1]Polachek A, Cook R, Chandran V, Gladman DD, Eder L. Background:In recent years, ultrasonography (US) has emerged as an accurate and reliable tool for the diagnosis of calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) deposition disease (CPPD) in daily practice. Previous studies analyzed the diagnostic value of US findings in different tissues and joints. However, no studies have investigated the optimal US scanning protocol in the diagnosis of CPPD at patient level. Objectives:To assess the diagnostic value of the combinations of OMERACT-defined US findings of CPPD in the upper and lower limbs and to select the best minimal combination of anatomic structures to be scanned for diagnosing CPPD in inter-critical periods. Methods:Patients with a crystal-proven diagnosis of CPPD and age- and sex-matched disease-controls were prospectively enrolled in this cross-sectional, monocentric, case-control study. All subjects underwent a bilateral US examination of 9 hyaline cartilages (HC), 6 fibrocartilages (FC), 5 tendons, 1 joint recess and 1 ligament as follows: shoulder (glenoid FC, humeral HC and acromioclavicular FC), elbow (humeral HC and triceps tendon), wrist (triangular FC, scapho-lunate ligament, volar recess of the radio-lunate joint), hand (HC of the metacarpophalangeal joints from 2nd to 5th finger), hip (acetabular FC and femoral HC), knee (femoral condyles’ HC, meniscal FC, patellar and quadriceps tendons), ankle (talar HC, Achilles tendon and plantar fascia). US assessment was carried-out by a rheumatologist blinded to clinical data. CPP deposits were identified as presence/absence, according to the OMERACT definitions [1].Results:Ninety-five patients were enrolled: 45 CPPD patients (age: 72±10.6 years, disease duration: 5.6±7.8 years, female/male ratio: 1.3) and 50 age- and sex-matched disease-controls (18 with rheumatoid arthritis, 13 with osteoarthritis, 10 with psoriatic arthritis and 9 with gout). The FC of the medial and lateral meniscus were the most frequently involved targets of CPP deposits in cases (81.8% and 77.3% of patients, respectively), followed by the triangular FC of the wrist (68.2%), the HC of the femoral condyles (54.5%), the scapho-lunate ligament (52.3%) and the acetabular FC (50.0%). In all these anatomical targets, US findings indicative of CPP deposits were detected in a significantly higher percentage of cases than controls (p<0.01).The US scanning protocols that showed the best balance between sensitivity and specificity, the most sensitive and the most specific were shown in Table 1.Table 1.Diagnostic performances of different US scanning protocolsAnatomical targetsSESPLH+LH-Knee meniscal FC and wrist triangular FC0.86(0.76-0.96)0.86(0.73-0.94)6.35(3.17-12.72)0.13(0.06-0.30)Knee meniscal FC, wrist triangular FC and hip acetabular FC0.93(0.82-0.99)0.82(0.69-0.91)5.19(2.85-9.42)0.08(0.03-0.24)Hip acetabular FC, knee femoral condyles’ HC andwrist scapho-lunate ligament0.67(0.51-0.80)0.96(0.86-0.99)16.67(4.22-65.82)0.35(0.23-0.53)LH: likelihood ratio, SE: sensitivity, SP: specificity, US: ultrasonography. In all US scanning protocols, each anatomical target was assessed bilaterally.Figure 1 includes representative pictures showing CPP crystal deposits in different anatomical targets.A: Wrist, longitudinal scan of the triangular FC complex.B: Knee, longitudinal scan of the lateral meniscus.C: Hip, longitudinal scan of the acetabular labrum FC,D: Knee, longitudinal scan of the medial femoral condyle’s HC.Arrows: CPP crystal deposits at FC, arrowhead: CPP crystal deposits at HC.Conclusion:Our results suggest that bilateral US assessment of knee, wrist and hip provided acceptable sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing CPPD.References:[1]Filippou G, et al. Abstract Background: Axatilimab (Axa) is an IgG4 humanized monoclonal antibody with high affinity binding to CSF-1R. Axa blocks CSF1 and IL-34 binding and activation of CSF-1R signaling, a key pathway involved in the expansion and infiltration of donor-derived macrophages that mediate chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). We previously reported preliminary phase (Ph) 1 data demonstrating clinical activity and safety of Axa in patients with active cGVHD (Arora, ASH 2020). Here, we provide updated results, including Ph 2 clinical data, for doses chosen to move forward in a global, randomized pivotal study, AGAVE-201 (SNDX-6352-504). Methods: SNDX-6352-0503 is a Ph 1/2 study evaluating safety, tolerability, and efficacy of Axa in pts ≥6 years of age with active cGVHD despite ≥2 prior lines of systemic therapy. Ph 1 evaluated Axa at doses of 0.15mg/kg (n=1), 0.5mg/kg (n=1), 1mg/kg (n=3), and 3mg/kg (n=6) Q2W and 3mg/kg Q4W (n=6). The Ph 2 dose expansion evaluated Axa at 1mg/kg Q2W (n=23) with a primary objective of overall response rate (CR+PR) at 6 months. The data cutoff was 28 Jun 2021. Results: Forty pts (17 Ph 1 and 23 Ph 2) were enrolled and received at least 1 dose of axatilimab. Median age was 59 y (range, 16-73). Pts had received a median of 4 prior lines of treatment (range, 1-11), including ibrutinib (n=25), ruxolitinib (n=21), and belumosudil (n=8). Pts had a median of 4 involved organ systems at baseline (range, 1-9). At the time of the data cut, 22 pts (Ph 1, n=6; Ph 2, n=16) were continuing study treatment. Reasons for discontinuation included progression (n=5, 13%), physician decision (n=5, 13%), adverse events (AEs) (n=4, 10%; grade [Gr]) 3 periorbital edema, Gr 3 hypersensitivity reaction, Gr 4 CPK increased, Gr 5 fall (n=1 each), other (n=2, 5%), and withdrawal of consent (n=2, 5%). Thirty-eight pts were evaluable for response across Ph 1 & Ph 2. Overall response rate was 66% (n=25/38) and similar in pts previously treated with ibrutinib (n=16/24; 67%), ruxolitinib (n=13/20; 65%), and belumosudil (n=4/7; 57%). Response rates were similar for moderate severity cGVHD (60% [6/10]) vs severe cGVHD (70% [19/27]). A 7-point improvement in the normalized Lee Symptom score was seen in 54% (n=19/35) of pts (Fig 1). Focusing on the 32 pts treated at 2 of the doses selected to move forward (1mg/kg Q2W [n=26] and 3 mg/kg Q4W [n=6]), AEs related to Axa occurred in 66% (n=21/32) of pts with 13% (n=4/32) of pts experiencing grade ≥3 related-AEs. At the 1mg/kg Q2W dose, 62% (n=16/26) of pts experienced a related-AE with 8% (n=2/26) of pts experiencing grade ≥3 related-AEs (hypersensitivity, septic arthritis; both grade 3). Related-AEs, regardless of grade, in the 32 pts demonstrate a trend toward dose dependency (1mg/kg Q2W vs 3 mg/kg Q4W) with a higher proportion having elevations in AST (23% vs 50%), CPK (12% vs 67%), ALT (12% vs 33%), lipase (12% vs 50%), and incidence of periorbital edema (8% vs 50%) in the 3mg/kg Q4W cohort (Table 1). Transient elevated circulating enzyme levels have not been associated with hepatotoxicity or any other end-organ damage and are likely due to CSF-1R blockade on Kupffer cells, which are liver macrophages that mediate clearance of these enzymes. Importantly, the risk of infection was low, and no cases of viral reactivation were reported (cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr, and/or herpes simplex virus). Of the 32 pts treated at 1mg/1kg Q2W or 3mg/kg Q4W, 30 pts were considered evaluable for response (2 pts had not undergone a postbaseline assessment at the time of the data cut). A best overall response rate (CR+PR) of 70% (75% [18/24] 1mg/kg Q2W; 50% [3/6] 3mg/kg Q4W) as defined by the 2014 NIH cGVHD Consensus Criteria was observed. Responses were noted in difficult-to-treat organ manifestations, with 31% (n=4/13) experiencing a response in lung, 19% (n=5/27) in skin, and 57% (n=13/23) in joints and fascia. Median time to first response was 0.95 months (Fig 2). Conclusions: Axa is a novel agent targeting a pathway different than other cGVHD treatments. Data from this Ph 1/2 study demonstrate the safety and clinical activity of Axa in heavily pre-treated pts with active cGVHD, particularly those with fibrotic manifestations. A randomized pivotal study (AGAVE-201) has started enrolling a similar pt population, evaluating doses of 1 mg/kg Q2W and 3mg/kg Q4W, along with a lower dose of 0.3mg/kg Q2W. Figure 1 Figure 1. Ancora una volta si conferma l’estrema eterogeneità delle risposte di questi sistemi ed il ruolo prioritario delle forzanti idrologiche nel determinarne l’efficacia.</p><p>Seven buffer strips (BS)<strong><em> </em></strong>adjacent to fresh water bodies, realized according to the technical data contained in the Standard 5.2 of Cross-compliance, located in different areas and climate contexts, were monitored for a period of two years. It was done in order to quantify their effectiveness in removing dissolved inorganic nitrogen conveyed through sub- surface flow from field crops with different cultural practices. Except for two case studies (sites: Lodi and Metaponto) in all monitored systems has been confirmed an outflow, permanent or temporary, through the buffer systems, with flow rates ranging from 919 to 8590 m3y-1 every 100 meters of buffer stip. The differences in flow rate were mainly due to different sizes of agricultural basins related to buffer systems, which in the case studies ranging from 3.6 to 33.3%. Based on the mass balance, was found percentages of applied inorganic nitrogen, flowing from cultivated fields to the buffer systems, varied between 1.6 and 29.4%. In most of the sites was estimated nitrogen reduction between inlet and outlet of BS, with percentages ranging from 33 to 61.9%. The exceptions were the systems with groundwater that: or have no interaction with the rhizosphere (deep flow) or not crossing the buffer zone. Low percentages of removal shall be justified by the young stage of the monitored sites, being in many cases recently converted to buffer strip. This study confirms the extreme variability of these systems efficiency and the key role of hydrology drives its effectiveness.</p>

Background—Previous studies have investigated the role of intrinsic conduction in optimizing cardiac resynchronization therapy. We investigated the role of fusing pacing-induced activation and intrinsic conduction in cardiac resynchronization therapy by evaluating the acute hemodynamic effects of simultaneous His-bundle (HIS) and left ventricular (LV) pacing. Methods and Results—We studied 11 patients with systolic heart failure and left bundle-branch block scheduled for cardiac resynchronization therapy implantation. On implantation, LV pressure–volume data were determined via conductance catheter. Standard leads were placed in the right atrium, at the right ventricular apex, and in a coronary vein. An additional electrode was temporarily positioned in the HIS. The following pacing configurations were systematically assessed: standard biventricular (right ventricular apex+LV), LV-only, HIS, simultaneous HIS and LV (HIS+LV). Each configuration was compared with the AAI mode at multiple atrioventricular delays (AVD). In comparison with the AAI, right ventricular apex+LV and LV-only pacing resulted in improved stroke volume (85±32 mL and 86±33 mL versus 58±23 mL; P<0.001), stroke work, maximum pressure derivative, and systolic dyssynchrony at individually optimized AVD. The optimal AVD was close to the P-H interval in the majority of patients. By contrast, HIS-LV pacing improved hemodynamic indexes at all AVD (stroke volume >76 mL at all fixed intervals and 88±31 mL at optimal interval; all P<0.001). Conclusions—Standard right ventricular apex+LV and LV-only pacing enhanced systolic function and LV synchrony at individually optimized AVD close to the measured intrinsic P-H interval. By contrast, HIS+LV pacing yielded improvements, regardless of AVD setting. These findings support the hypothesis of the crucial role of intrinsic right ventricular conduction in optimal cardiac resynchronization therapy delivery

Using unpublished documents, this volume restores the meeting between two masters in a historical and ideal way: Norberto Bobbio and Silvio Trentin. Through the writings which Bobbio dedicated to Trentin between 1954 and 1991, the readers are introduced to Trentin’s world. They gradually discover Trentin’s exemplary biography, his clear moral personality and his commitment to anti-fascism and the Resistance, as well as the great themes of his work as a jurist and political thinker: the criticism of fascism, federalism and the idea of the 'third way'. As Bobbio observes, the fundamental reason why Trentin represents a still valuable example is that, through his life and thought, he has perfectly embodied the conception of politics as a desire of justice, as opposed to the will to dominate.

Our life with Ezio and Memories of War, written by Flora Aghib Levi D’Ancona traces the life of her husband Ezio Levi, a Jewish Italian philologist and hispanist, their experiences of exile in the US where the couple fled after the racial laws. Completed with a historiographical introduction and an appendix of unpublished letters, the volume traces Ezio’s path as a Jewish intellectual in Fascist Italy, his role as a cultural mediator of Spanish contemporary literature to Italy, the trauma of the racial laws, and the challenges of the American exile. Expression of a women’s exile literature, the pages reflect the authors experience as a mother writing for her children left in Italy and of an intellectual Italian Jewish woman dealing with the challenges of exile and memory.

The study of the textile sector has always been central to economic history: from reconstructions of the dynamic growth in the medieval wool industry, to the rise of silk and light and mixed fabrics in the modern era, to the driving role of cotton in the industrialisation process. Although the dynamics of textile manufacturing are closely linked to the transformations of fashion, economic history has long neglected its role as a factor in economic change, treating it primarily as a kind of exogenous catalyst. This book makes a decisive contribution to the understanding of a fundamental transformation, the consequences of which are projected into contemporary society, but which matured in pre-industrial times: the advent of fashion.

Over the last 100 years, European private law has developed from liberal to social private law. The foundations for this were laid in the German-French-Italian discourse of the interwar period. Further significant impulses came from fascism and in the course of the European integration of the three states after 1945. For the first time, the genesis of today's private social law has been discussed and comprehensively analyzed at trilateral conferences in the Villa Vigoni. This first of three resulting volumes deals with the significance for this development of the Franco-Italian draft of the Code of Obligations of 1927 (Progetto di Codice delle obbligazioni e dei contratti – Projet de Code des obligations et des contrats) .

A minor but frequent editorialist and contributor to the Fascist press over the 1930s, Odon Por reached the apex of his visibility when he joined Ezra Pound in the attempt to promote policies based on Major Douglas’s Social Credit and Silvio Gesell’s Stamp Scrip. Drawing on various archival sources, the chapter reconstructs Por’s international background, the political protections that allowed him to occupy comfortable positions in the regime’s institutions, and his ideological itinerary from revolutionary syndicalism to guild socialism and from here to a fascism which was more imagined than real. His case is a typical illustration of the appeal that the Italian corporatist model held for anti-capitalist movements in inter-war Europe.

The paper focuses on the issue of the impact of the Fascist regime’s own language on the activity of the administrative judge. After recalling the problem of the context in which the language of the administrative judge is framed, the investigation highlights some possible “symptoms” of a “sensibility” to be assessed on the level of stylistic and expressive formulas. If, in some cases, this language has been the subject of a particular criticism and attack, in others cases it is possible to highlight how a certain assonance emerges indirectly with the typical speech of the regime. In this perspective, it can be recognized that the linguistic “charm” of the regime, while not affecting the independence of judgment of the administrative judge, had a certain impact on the style of some decisions of the Italian Council of State. An analysis conducted on some paradigmatic cases is able to identify, with regard to a part of the jurisprudence developed after the Thirties, a real “climax” on the linguistic and expressive level.

In Europe, in the Middle Ages, ostrich feathers were used for the decoration of military headgear, as a representation of the high lineage of the possessor and his military virtues. They were imported from the coasts of West Africa, from Egypt and Syria into Italian and Spanish ports and from there exported to England and continental Europe. Venice, at the end of the fourteenth century, began to color feathers and soon the new fashion was spread throughout Europe. During the fifteenth century, even women began to use ostrich feathers on their hats or in their fans. When European ships reached America, Central Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean, a huge amount of exotic bird feathers became available and ostrich feather fad spread through the population.

The contribution proposes a reflection on the greatest author of the 18th Century Italian theater who drew on the dramaturgical heritage of the siglos de oro. The main elements dealt with are: Carlo Gozzi's theoretical reflection on the characteristics of Spanish theater; the fundamental role in the repêchage that the actors of Antonio Sacco's company had in that theater, for which the author provided - according to him - a "voluntary friendly assistance"; finally, the most significant data that emerge, or could emerge, from the first National Edition of the works of Carlo Gozzi (launched in 2011).

The consumption of fabrics in 18th-Century Europe experienced a notable expansion - particularly in France, a major hub for the diffusion of clothing fashions across the continent. Driven by manufacturers and merchants, the supply of new product varieties has been highlighted in several French production areas. However, a general assessment of the scale and rates of product innovation in the market for fabrics has never been attempted. By varying the scales of analysis, from the statistics the French monarchy used to assess production in the various production areas to store inventories, we can try to estimate the secular movements of product innovation. Over the course of the 18th century, the market for medium or poor quality cloths appears to have been particularly dynamic: the proportion of new varieties at the end of the century approximated two-thirds of the stock. There was also a tendency to diversify the supply - which ended up making the "world of goods" difficult to read, many product innovations being present on the market only for a while.

Abstract What propelled the fusion of Roman fasces with Aesop’s moralizing tale of sticks was the Nova Iconologia of Cesare Ripa (1555–1622), a compilation of emblems first published in an illustrated edition in 1603. There both Justice and Concord suggestively receive as their attributes a fascio di verghe (“bundle of sticks”). Later editors of Ripa completed the conflation. In France, the powerful cardinal and statesman Jules Mazarin (1602–1661, chief minister to the crown from 1642) shamelessly exploited the fasces, ostensibly as a family heraldic emblem but with the effect of creating a personal brand. Mazarin attracted many encomiasts, who did much to promote the emphatically non-Roman idea that the fasces represented unity, and good government in general. This whole understanding of the fasces culminates in a bronze full-length portrait statue of Louis XIV (reigned 1643–1715), dedicated in 1689 at Musée Carnavalet in Paris. Here the sculptor Antoine Coysevox (1640–1720) portrayed the king in a Roman cuirass, resting his left arm on an axe-less fasces topped by a helmet. In its context, the fasces conveys a balanced message of strength, dominion, moderation, and unity through reconciliation, while also rekindling memories of Mazarin’s own policies as advisor to the king. Yet in this period no nation shows much interest in putting the fasces on civic coats of arms, flags, coins, and the like. Even in the 1760s, when the antiquarian obsessions of the Neoclassical movement were at their peak, the fasces seemed fated to find itself just one derivative antique decorative element among many.

Abstract This chapter analyzes the legacy of the dancers, known as the Fly Girls, who appeared on the American television show In Living Color. The Fly Girls’ performances, fashion, and choreographies circulated through mass media, and inspired future generations of dancers. The chapter recounts the impact the Fly Girls had on the development of professional choreographic practice, sense of self, and fashion sense in Hip Hop dance, from the unique perspectives and experiences of three dancers in particular: Leah “McFly” McKesey, Diana “Fly Lady Di” Reyes, and Mary “MJ” Fogarty. Because their memories of the Fly Girls are woven throughout a social history that focuses on the childhood and coming of age of these three dancers, they are presented here as testament to the Fly Girls formative contributions. Both Leah “McFly” McKesey and Diana “Fly Lady Di” Reyes met one of their inspirations live, the original Fly Girl, Jossie Harris, in New York City, and the chapter concludes with an interview and exchange between her and the authors.

This introductory chapter describes the life and career of Luigi Nono (1924–1990). It also provides an overview of the present volume. Born on January 29, 1924, in Venice, Nono's education and musical apprenticeship took place during the crucial years of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, in a family and intellectual milieu which were solidly middle class while being fundamentally hostile to fascism. In 1950, Nono approached his first orchestral composition, Variazioni canoniche sulla serie dell'op. 41 di Arnold Schönberg—Schoenberg's opus 41. During the 1960s and 1970s, political commitment, social conflict, denunciation, and the treatment of individual psychology always in relation to the collective drama became constants of Nono's production as the concept of engagement took on for him the value of a “moral imperative” (Jean-Paul Sartre) to match the aesthetic imperative.

This chapter takes an original approach to Byron’s much-discussed engagement with the early Risorgimento by focusing not on biographical aspects, but rather on formal issues. It centres on The Two Foscari in the context of the highly politicised contemporary Italian critical debates about the dramatic unities. In this fashion, it teases out the political implications of Byron’s adherence to the unities by comparing his play to Alessandro Manzoni’s Il conte di Carmagnola, which programmatically violates them. Focusing specifically on the playwrights’ representations of the fifteenth-century mercenary leader, Francesco Bussone da Carmagnola, the chapter explores these writers’ use or abuse of the unity of time, in particular. In doing so, it throws light on, and contrasts, Manzoni’s Risorgimento agenda on the one hand and Byron’s generally sceptical attitude about leadership and uncertainty about social and political change on the other.

In recent years, listening and observation of society has gradually assumed a greater role, to define new urban policies and planning modeling. In this sense, sociological literature provided causes for reflection, problematizing concepts as need, identity or local action; central key concepts in the practices and theories of urban planning. Lately, in many European cities (Naples included), urban planning provided a response to the need of territorial identity. Recently the urban policies overcome the traditional planning tools. This paper presents the results of a case study about the planning and restyling of a contemporary neapolitan “business district” called Centro direzionale. The aim of the paper is to described the urban planning process. I have considered two macrodimension of analysis. The first one is organizational: it examines how the project is inclusive for stakeholders. The second one is relational: it considers the territorial identity and the sense of community of the different populations livening on District. Has the "bio-socio-environmental capital” been improved?

Algorithms for estimating the motion of a moving object from digital imagery acquired in real time generally rely on two important assumptions: 1) the field of view is sampled frame-instantaneously, i.e. a record of the radiation integrated over a time interval that is short compared to the frame interval is stored at the focal plane, and this frozen image is read out serially during the interval between frames; and 2) there is relatively little change in the image between consecutive frames. With many digital imaging systems, the field of view is sampled time-sequentially during the entire interval between frames; and the radiation sensed at the focal plane changes continuously during this time. Typically, the field of view is sampled in a lexicographic (LEX) or 2:1 line-interlaced (2:1-LI) fashion. These patterns are illustrated in Table 1 which shows the order in which a 4 × 4 array of points would be sampled. With both these patterns, consecutive samples are clustered spatially. Table 1 also shows three dot-interlaced sampling patterns which disperse consecutive samples over the entire field of view. The 2:1 dot-interlaced (2:1-DI) and bit-reversed dot-interlaced (BRV-DI) patterns have been considered for bandwidth compression in video systems. The congruential dot-interlaced (CGR-DI) pattern has been shown to be optimal for sampling bandlimited signals [1],[2]. It also simplifies certain signal processing operations [3]. This particular pattern generates a 5 × 4 array of samples.

In this script we’ll describe the everyday, little actions of the citizens that break the rules of the urban areas’ organization. Starting from the Old Town of Palermo, that we used as the example in our analysis, we’ll show how the “conquest”, even just temporary, of streets and squares could achieve a revitalization and a revaluation of quarters. Our focus is on understanding how revitalization/ re-conquest of urban areas has taken place. By altering people preconcieved ideas of areas of the city, this process achived the “domestication” of some areas that, out of their usual context, are inserted in new relations. Our choice to take Palermo as example derives from some typical characteristics of this city: the first one is due to its historical-cultural origins which, in some way, favor the settlement of new comunities; the second is that the way of live among population of different cultures develops in the centre of the city, not in the suburbs. These features make Palermo not unique, but atipical compared to the rest of Europe where immigrants and lower-class people, are generally forced to the external areas of towns. From this point of view we can imagine Palermo’s Old town as a sponge which is able not just to absorb new comunities, but also to attract people from the middle classes. In European cities gentrification processes are started thanks to projects realized by the Public Administrations, On the contrary in Palermo this process generates from actions of the inhabitants themselves. The change of degenerative trend and the increasing value in the Real Estate Market is therefore not caused by a political action, but thanks to the initiative of the lower class.

Many private companies and public bodies in authoritarian and democratic states have joined facial recognition technology, used for various purposes. This situation is due to the general absence of a specific regulation that monitors its use. There is no consensus in society regarding the ethics of this technology. Furthermore, there are many doubts concerning the long-term ethical sustainability of facial recognition and its compliance with the law. A problem that emerges from the use of this technology is its obscurity. We do not know who is responsible for the decision automatically made; we do not know how the data is used by those who collect it, how long this data is kept, who can have access to it, to whom it is sent, and how this is used to create a profile. In addition, facial recognition systems are powered by numerous images collected from the Internet and social media without users' permission: it is, therefore, impossible to trace the origin of the data. Consequently, any citizen could be classified, most likely discriminated against, and become the victim of an algorithm. The boundary between security and control is decidedly blurred: many cameras do not respect the privacy of individuals and often harm human rights when they are used to discriminate, accuse, power, and manipulate people. From this discussion on privacy and human rights, it was born first the desire to create awareness, in particular regarding these technologies and the possible issues linked to them. Secondly, it was born the will to create a product that would be the spokesperson for these concerns and allow citizens to protect themselves. On this basis, a collaboration between fashion, engineering, and textile has developed to produce fabric and then garments, which confuse facial recognition systems in real-time. The technological innovation aims to create a system capable of generating adversarial knitted patches that can confuse the systems that capture biometric data. By integrating an adversarial algorithm into their jacquard motifs, the garments prevent the wearers from being identified, preserving their privacy. The adversarial textile is made with computerized knitting machines. Compared to a printed image, knitwear acquires texture, durability, wearability, and practicability. Furthermore, a knitted fabric allows modifying the single yarn material based on the results and performance we want to obtain. These fabrics have been tested on Yolo, the fastest and most advanced algorithm for real-time object recognition. The project was born in New York in 2019; the first experiments with computerized knitting machines were carried out at the Politecnico di Milano in January 2020. The textile was developed in the workshops of the Shenkar College of Tel Aviv. On February 8, 2021, the patent of the industrial process to produce the adversarial knitted textile was filed, with the patronage of the Politecnico di Milano. Today, the research on this fabric and these thematics has carried on within a Ph.D. that combines human-centric design and engineering.
