Migratory shorebirds that move across continents along their flyways are undergoing a drastic decline globally. A greater proportion of them that regularly winter along the Indian coasts within the Central Asian Flyway (CAF) are also undergoing severe declines. However, the mechanisms underlying the population trends in these areas remain little understood. This study investigated the diversity, abundance, population dynamics and distribution patterns of shorebirds along the Indian coasts based on the available literature. The west coast of India is relatively less studied than the east coast in the CAF. Further, we observed that the diversity, abundance, population dynamics and distribution pattern of the shorebirds follow different trends on the west coast compared to the east coast. These variations are in accordance with the differences in topography and biotic and abiotic factors between the coasts. Anthropogenic activities have far-reaching effects on the survival and persistence of shorebirds along the coasts. The west coast is evidently more productive than the east coast at every trophic level and thus the west coast is expected to account for more abundance and diversity of shorebirds. Paradoxically, we found that the east coast supports a greater abundance and diversity of shorebirds than the west coast. The west coast, therefore, requires further investigations to obtain a better understanding of the causes of apparent differences in abundance and diversity as well as the observed declines in shorebirds, compared to the east coast of India.

Abstract The west beach coastal area of Banten province is very productive. Local governments use this area for various development activities, tourism in particular. This study aims to determine the tourism potential of the west coast of Banten Province based on the spatial pattern of land use by local regulations. Thus, the development of coastal tourism can develop in an integrated and sustainable manner. The research methodology used is literature study, interviews, field verification, spatial analysis (Arc-GIS), and policy analysis based on the Banten Province Spatial Plan. Based on policy analysis related to regional spatial planning in Banten Province, there are three strategic tourism areas on the west coast, including; (a) Sumur Beach corridor, (b) Pandeglang West Coast corridor (Carita-Cigeulis), and (c) Serang West Coast Corridor (Anyer-Cinangka). The West Coast Corridor of The criteria for the physical type of beach suitable for tourism activities is wide beaches, not rocky, freshwater, and far from the highway. The west coast corridor area these criteria is the Serang West Coast Corridor (Anyer - Cinangka), precisely at Anyer Beach and Anyer Kidul Beach.

Chrysophrys auratus was collected from one sub-tropical and two temperate regions spanning >2400 km along the coast of Western Australia (∼23.5–35.5° S). Marginal increment analysis demonstrated that, while a single opaque zone is formed in the otoliths of C. auratus each year, the period of deposition varies among regions. An opaque zone was formed in May to early September in the sub-tropical upper west coast, and thus when water temperatures were declining to their minima. In contrast, opaque zone formation occurred 3 months later in August to December in the temperate lower west and south coasts, when water temperatures were rising from their minima. The length and age distributions differed markedly among populations of C. auratus, with the strongest year classes varying among the three regions. Thus, it is likely that year class strength of C. auratus throughout its distribution along the coast of Western Australian is mostly related to local environmental conditions. Chrysophrys auratus grew far less rapidly and attained a smaller size in the warmer upper west coast than in the cooler temperate regions of the lower west and south coasts. A collation of data on C. auratus from ten populations in Australia and three in New Zealand showed that growth is greatest towards the mid-latitudes of its geographic range, i.e. at ∼31° S. Estimates of mean lengths at specified ages thus exhibit a parabolic relationship with latitude, with reduced growth (i.e. edge-of-range effects) occurring towards the latitudinal margins of the distribution of this sparid.

This article deals with specific traits of the development of ports on the Western coast of Flanders (Nieuwpoort, Dunkerque, Ostende, Gravelins, Lombardsijde, Mardyck) in the late fourteenth — early fifteenth centuries. The research of the documents reveals the profound impact on the life of these towns of their geographical position at the sea and land border of Flanders during the active periods of the Hundred Years’ War. Warfare led to serious destructions as well as made special measures to strengthen the defence of these towns necessary. The Anglo-French War also stimulated the flourishing of piracy that was one of the occupations of the population of Flemish ports despite the prohibition of piracy by the government. Most of these towns were situated on the trade routes that connected inner regions with the coast and the clothmaking cities and towns of Southern Flanders and Artois with the main centre of international trade, Bruges, via a system of rivers and canals. These proved to be an important positive factor for the development of some ports. Their citizens had the responsibility to maintain the security, proper condition, and work of these trade routes (to maintain the lighthouses along the coast, fix different problems with the canal system). The population of Flemish ports was mainly occupied in fishery. The analysis of the distribution of several extraordinary taxes voted by Four Members of Flanders makes it possible to reveal the financial abilities of ports of West Flanders. The author considers that the development of Nieuwpoort, with its various forms of economic and social life, differed in many ways from the development of smaller ports such as Gravelins, Lombardsijde, and Mardyck.

Abstract Wave energy dissipation on the surf zone is compensated with the increase of mean sea level, the so-called wave setup, within the area. This study used the numerical model Delft3D to investigate the dynamics of setup across the north coast region of West Java (Losari to Indramayu) influenced by monsoon variations. The wave forcing was obtained from previous field studies on Cirebon coastal region. The waves within the region were largely dissipated far from the coastline, mainly at the area between Babakan and Karangampel, due to the gentle slope of the North coast of Java. The waves approaching the shoreline were mainly influenced by the east monsoon associated with the longer fetch from that direction. The wave setup varied from ~0.03 to 0.15 m, with the maximum setup occurred near the coastline of the east (Losari) and west (Indramayu) parts of the model domain that consisted of steeper slopes. This, potentially inducing severe coastal inundation that became a serious problem across the coastlines. Meanwhile, the setup near the coastline of the middle area of the domain (Babakan to Karangampel) was very weak, which was correlated to the larger wave dissipation within the offshore area of that region.

Gastrotricha is a group of small aquatic acoelomate animals with more than 820 species worldwide (Balsamo et al. 2015). The Swedish gastrotrich fauna today comprises 94 nominal species of which 40 are marine and 54 are freshwater (Curini-Galletti et al. 2012; Kånneby 2011). Of these, 69 species belong to the order Chaetonotida Remane, 1925 and 25 species belong to the order Macrodasyida Remane, 1925. Compared to other relatively well investigated countries in the region, the Swedish marine Gastrotrich fauna of the west coast appears fairly surveyed. In fact, 38 species have been recorded from Norway (Clausen 2004; Schmidt 1972), while 15 species have been recorded from the seas surrounding the Danish mainland (Grilli et al. 2010). The Swedish brackish waters of the Baltic have a lower diversity and so far only 7 species are known from this area (Kånneby 2011; unpublished observations). By comparison, 31 species have been recorded from the Polish Baltic coast (Hummon 2008; Kolicka et al. 2015). In this paper we describe a new species of Aspidiophorus found during an intensive research on the gastrotrich fauna of the surroundings of the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences (Kristineberg) on the Swedish west coast carried out in the summer of 2009.

For over five decades the identity of a pink-flowered bindweed (Calystegia) with a broadly rounded leaf sinus from the coast of West Wales has been subject to debate. Initially it was thought to have American origins, but it was subsequently treated as C. sepium subsp. spectabilis, a taxon thought to have genetic links to the Far East. Additional finds of other plants on western coasts of Britain and Ireland, and their similarities to a North American subspecies of C. sepium also having a broadly rounded leaf sinus now supports the original suggestion of inheritance from a trans-Atlantic drifted migrant.

The breeding range of the Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) in Greenland includes West Greenland to as far north as 72º 30’ N and a few sites in East Greenland. The breeding population is guessed at a few thousand pairs. During winter Harlequin Ducks occur along the West Greenland coast between Maniitsoq and Nanortalik. The size of the winter population is unknown. As Canadian males, which have moulted in Southwest Greenland, also winter there, perhaps accompanied by females and juveniles, the numbers may be considerable. The peak period for clutch initiation seems to be mid- to late June. There is no immediate conservation concern for the small breeding population of Harlequin Ducks in Greenland. However, there is a risk from marine oil spills along coasts where congregations of non-breeding Harlequin Ducks from both Greenland and eastern Canada occur.

Abstract Coetzee, J. C., van der Lingen, C. D., Hutchings, L., and Fairweather, T. P. 2008. Has the fishery contributed to a major shift in the distribution of South African sardine? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 1676–1688. A major shift in the distribution of South African sardine (Sardinops sagax) has resulted in a significant spatial mismatch in fishing effort vs. fish abundance in recent years. The sardine fishery started on the west coast during the 1940s, and processing capacity there increased rapidly. This trend together with increases in annual landings continued up to the early 1960s, but then the fishery collapsed as a consequence of overfishing. The population then recovered steadily during the 1980s and 1990s, coincident with, but perhaps not entirely attributable to, the inception of conservative management practices, to support catches similar to pre-collapse levels. Since 2001, however, most of the sardine population has been situated on South Africa’s south coast, far from processing facilities. Fishing effort has increased concomitantly on that coast, particularly during the past three years, reflecting the continued decline in the abundance of sardine on the west coast. Three hypotheses explaining the change in the distribution of sardine have been proposed: (i) intensely localized (i.e. west coast) fishing pressure depleted that part (or functionally distinct unit) of the population; (ii) the shift was environmentally induced; and (iii) successful spawning and recruit survival on the south coast contributed disproportionately more towards the bulk of recruitment, and progeny spawned there now dominate the population and exhibit natal homing. The first of these hypotheses is evaluated, and management implications of the shift discussed.

Abstract The existence of eastward-propagating bores over Cape York Peninsula is shown from data obtained during the Gulf Lines Experiment (GLEX) conducted during September and October 2002 and from numerical modeling experiments. The disturbances were detected regularly at two stations, observable on 24 days during the 40-day experiment. The passage of a typical disturbance exhibits a sudden increase in pressure of around 1 hPa, often accompanied by undulations, and a change in the wind speed and direction from an easterly to a westerly flow. Disturbances were not observed during days of strong easterly flow. A two-dimensional nonhydrostatic mesoscale model is used to examine the formation of these disturbances. It is shown that the west coast sea breeze is shallow and does not penetrate far inland because of the opposing low-level easterly flow. In contrast, the east coast sea breeze is deeper and is less stable because it is modified by daytime convective mixing as it crosses the peninsula. As the east coast sea breeze overrides the west coast sea breeze, the west coast sea breeze produces an eastward-propagating bore on the stable layer laid down by the east coast sea breeze. About 2 h after generation, the bore becomes undular. These eastward-propagating disturbances are shown to be associated with the westward-propagating north Australian cloud line and the northeasterly morning glory. In addition, it is shown here that an undular bore can be formed when cold-air downdrafts from afternoon deep convection enter the stable layer created by the east coast sea breeze. Four events from GLEX are believed to have been formed in this way. The eastward-propagating disturbances produced in this way are accompanied neither by the north Australian cloud line nor by the northeasterly morning glory.

Abstract Sporadic in situ observations have shown evidence that subthermocline eddies exist off the Mindanao coast. These subthermocline eddies are believed to play an important role in the heat, freshwater, and other ocean property transports of the region, but their characteristics and in particular their pathway and source of energy are poorly explored because of the lack of long-term observations. Analysis of results from an eddy-resolving general ocean circulation model has revealed that most subthermocline eddies off the Mindanao coast originate from the equatorial South Pacific Ocean to the west of the Ninigo Group. These eddies propagate northward along the New Guinea coast, cross the equator in the far western Pacific, and reach the Mindanao coast at a typical propagation speed of ~0.12 m s−1. The dominant time scales of these eddies range between 50 and 60 days.

Abstract Pop-up archival tags (n = 16) were deployed on Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT) off the west coast of Ireland in October and November 2016 (199–246 cm curved fork length), yielding 2799 d of location data and 990 and 989 d of depth and temperature time-series data, respectively. Most daily locations (96%, n = 2651) occurred east of 45°W, the current stock management boundary for ABT. Key habitats occupied were the Bay of Biscay and the Central North Atlantic, with two migratory patterns evident: an east-west group and an eastern resident group. Five out of six tags that remained attached until July 2017 returned to the northeast Atlantic after having migrated as far as the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean Sea (MEDI) and the Central North Atlantic. Tracked bluefin tuna exhibited a diel depth-use pattern occupying shallower depths at night and deeper depths during the day. Four bluefin tuna visited known spawning grounds in the central and western MEDI, and one may have spawned, based on the recovered data showing oscillatory dives transecting the thermocline on 15 nights. These findings demonstrate the complexity of the aggregation of ABT off Ireland and, more broadly in the northeast Atlantic, highlighting the need for dedicated future research to conserve this important aggregation.

So far, hardly anything is known about the ecology of the dominant algal groups. The present study compiled records of Chlorophytes from nine studies in the shallow reefs of Curaçao in the years preceding the onset of coral reef decline (1908–1978) and compared them with records from three recent (2007–2009) expeditions conducted at the same and nearby study locations along the south-west coast of the island. A total of 107 species were encountered, including seven new records for Curaçao (Anadyomene saldanhae,Bryopsis hypnoides,Chaetomorpha minima,Derbesia fastigiata,Ulva flexuosasubsp.paradoxa, Ulvella scutataandUlvella lens). Sampled material revealed a higher species number during the dry seasons than during the wet seasons, indicating a seasonal variation in algal growth. Most species grew on hard substratum or were epibiotic, and 13 species were found growing on more than one substratum. Comparisons with earlier studies suggest an extension in depth range for nine species. The present work provides a comprehensive overview of the distribution of Chlorophytes of the island and can serve as an important baseline for further research on coral reef ecosystem changes.

At present, only 11 species of harpacticoid copepods have been described from the deep sea of the Gulf of California and the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula. These efforts had until recently been focused exclusively on the families Ameiridae Boeck, Argestidae Por, and Rhizothrichidae Por. Preliminary analyses revealed also an important contribution of the subfamily Stenheliinae Brady (Miraciidae Dana) to the overall species richness and diversity of deep-sea benthic copepods from the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, and the central and southern Gulf of California. One new species of the genus Wellstenhelia Karanovic & Kim, 2014, We. euterpoides sp. nov., and one new genus and species, Wellstenvalia wellsi gen. et sp. nov., are herein described from sediment samples taken at eight sampling stations in the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula and in the central and southern Gulf of California. Wellstenhelia euterpoides sp. nov. seems to be closely related to We. euterpe Karanovic & Kim, 2014 with which it shares the reduced armature complement of the baseoendopod of the female fifth leg. The so far monotypic genus Wellstenvalia gen. nov. was found to be closely related to Muohuysia Özdikmen, 2009 and Wellstenhelia. Some comments on the relationships between the new genus proposed here and other stenheliin genera and species are provided as a contribution towards the monophyly of the subfamily.

Abstract. The utility of fuzzy set theory in cluster analysis and pattern recognition has been evolving since the mid 1960s, in conjunction with the emergence and evolution of computer technology. The classification of objects into categories is the subject of cluster analysis. The aim of this paper is to employ Fuzzy-clustering technique to examine the interrelationship of geomagnetic coastal and other effects at Indian observatories. Data from the observatories used for the present studies are from Alibag on the West Coast, Visakhapatnam and Pondicherry on the East Coast, Hyderabad and Nagpur as central inland stations which are located far from either of the coasts; all the above stations are free from the influence of the daytime equatorial electrojet. It has been found that Alibag and Pondicherry Observatories form a separate cluster showing anomalous variations in the vertical (Z)-component. H- and D-components form different clusters. The results are compared with the graphical method. Analytical technique and the results of Fuzzy-clustering analysis are discussed here.

The Villosa species group in the genus Ehrharta Thunb. is differentiated morphologically by very large, profusely hairy, bearded and aristate spikelets and by a suffrutescent habit, with culms woody at the base and with reduced leaf blades. The Villosa group is composed of two species, one with a variety: E. thunbergii Gibbs Russell, nom. nov., E. villosa Schult. f. var. villosa and E. villosa var. maxima Stapf. Members of the group occur on sandy soils in the Succulent Karoo and Fynbos Biomes, along the west coast in Strandveld and on the southern coast as far east as the Fish River. Morphologically, the group appears to be related to the Calycina and Capensis groups.

Two seal species breed on the west coast of South Australia, the Australian sea lion, Neophoca cinerea, and the New Zealand fur seal, Arctocephalus forsteri. Aerial surveys were conducted at intervals of ~3 months between April 1995 and June 1997 to determine the breeding status of sea lions and timing of pupping seasons. Ground surveys between October 1994 and April 2004 aimed at counting sea lions and fur seals, particularly pups. In all, 27 sites were examined. Six new sea lion breeding colonies were documented, at Four Hummocks, Price, North Rocky, Dorothee, West Waldegrave and Nicolas Baudin Islands. All were found or confirmed by ground survey. Pup numbers were equivalent to 12% of the total number of pups estimated in surveys conducted from 1987 to 1992, but primarily in 1990. The sighting of brown pups on aerial surveys of Ward Island, Middle and Western Nuyts Reef supports earlier indications, based on dead pups, that they are breeding colonies. The timing of pupping seasons is not synchronous; estimates are presented for colonies between 1995 and early in 2004, with predictions to the end of 2005. The abundance estimates of sea lion pups highlight the importance of visiting a colony early in the pupping season to determine when pupping begins and ~5 months later when the maximum number of pups is expected. For the New Zealand fur seal, small numbers of pups were recorded at Dorothee, West Waldegrave and Nicolas Baudin Islands, and at Nuyts Reef. These and the previously unknown sea lion breeding colonies on the west coast of South Australia suggest that further colonies may remain to be documented. Because planning for aquaculture ventures is active in South Australia, it is important that the localities and status of sea lion and fur seal colonies be established unequivocally to ensure that the need for Prohibited Area status for islands with breeding colonies and for Marine Protected Areas around them is noted.

Driftwood and shrubs are the primary wood resources available in most areas of coastal Nunavik. Today, they are mainly used as fuel for campfires, but historically they were very important for the ancestors of present-day Inuit. This article documents Inuit traditional knowledge about the origin, availability, gathering, and exploitation of wood resources in this region located in the Low Arctic and the Subarctic. Interviews were conducted with 27 Inuit between 60 and 89 years of age in the villages of Ivujivik, Akulivik, Inukjuak, and Umiujaq on the east coast of Hudson Bay. Our data reveal, among other things, that Inuktitut names for pieces of driftwood were based on shape, aspect, colour, and texture. This traditional knowledge was very accurate and highly diverse in the southern villages because of their significant exposure to driftwood. Wood from shrubs (i.e. willows, birches, and alders) was mainly harvested in the fall and used to make fires, mattresses, sleeping mats (alliat), and other objects. According to the participants, driftwood originates in southern Hudson Bay and James Bay and is washed up on the beaches in late summer and the fall. In the far north of Nunavik, where driftwood is small and slender, Inuit used to collect it during the summer from a boat (umiaq or qajaq). Further south, it was gathered during the winter by dogsled.

A large tract of mangrove forest in Malaysia has been lost due to increased anthropogenic activities. Restorative practices of mangrove forest have been adopted nationwide to re-establish ecosystem services in combating coastal erosion. However, genetic considerations in local mangrove restoration practices are still far lacking despite the vast literature on their genetic diversity. To understand whether the restored mangroves can impact the genetic diversity distribution among natural populations, we used eight microsatellite markers to assess the genetic diversity of the Api-api putih (Avicennia alba) between the natural and restored populations along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. We found no difference in terms of genetic diversity between these populations. Two genetic clusters were detected among A. alba along the west coast based on Bayesian clustering and discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC). The southwest monsoon current circulation that coincides the timing of seed dispersal of A. alba may explain such pattern of genetic differentiation. Despite the minimal genetic structure, our results suggest that seed sourcing from either population is viable for the local mangrove restoration programs in the future.

The predominant hydrocarbons produced in the Taranaki Basin are gas condensates, although oil has been discovered at several widespread locations and therefore remains a priority exploration objective. Study of the oil geochemistry by means of bulk chemical characteristics, isotope and biomarker content improves our understanding of their source rocks and maturation histories. Results show that the oils and condensates throughout the region are similar in their bulk chemical character, source environment and levels of maturation suggesting a common source for all the hydrocarbons. The source environments as indicated by biomarkers were terrestrial fresh water swamps with low bacterial anoxic conditions. The primary plant material deposited was vascular plant debris, and onshore in northern Taranaki and in the Murchison Basin, angiosperm debris was an important additional component. These angiosperm indicators are absent from the West Coast and southeastern Taranaki oils and condenstates. The overall environment of the oil sources rocks is similar to that which formed the high volatile coals of the West Coast. These coals, on source rock analyses, also reveal a perhydrous character equivalent to the high hydrogen index normally associated with marine oil source rocks. Maturation levels of the oils, equivalent to a vitrinite reflectance level of Ro 1.0% are indicated by biomarkers. The highest maturation levels reached by drilling so far are 0.9%. suggesting that oil source rocks in Taranaki Basin are at or below the maximum drilled depth of 5.5 km. After generation, the oils of the West Coast were slightly biodegraded as suggested by their low paraffin wax content. However, valid biomarker interpretations for source and maturation conditions are still possible. The widespread occurrences of oil and the consistent nature of the detailed chemistry of the oils suggest that in addition to gas condensate there is a reasonable prospectivity for oil especially in and adjacent to the Central Graben are of the Taranaki Basin and in parts of the West Coast.

J. G. Mullen was a Gold Coast clerk who published his memoirs, in instalments, in the Gold Coast Leader from 1916 to 1919. In this unusual narrative, he describes his adventures in Cameroon before and during the First World War. His account combines real-life geographical and social details with flamboyant tropes probably derived from imperial popular literature. Mullen's biography and even identity have so far been otherwise untraceable. His text offers glimpses, always enigmatic, of the experience and outlook of a member of the new clerkly class of colonial West Africa. This contribution presents an edited extract from Mullen's text together with a contextualizing and interpretative essay. Previous work on bioclimatic mapping of species within the Antechinus stuartii–A. flavipes complex has been carried out, but this was before A. subtropicus was recognised and a complete taxonomic revision of the complex had been completed. This revised study of bioclimatic modelling of species within the A. stuartii–A. flavipes complex indicates substantial differences between the four species (A. stuartii, A. agilis, A. subtropicus and A. flavipes) in 35 climatic indices. A. stuartii is predicted to have a near-coastal distribution in northern and central New South Wales stretching as far south as Kioloa and as far north as south-eastern Queensland, avoiding the far coastal strip. A. agilis is predicted to have an extensive distribution in Victoria and southern New South Wales as far north as western Sydney; it is also predicted to occur in Tasmania, even though there is no evidence of it ever occurring there. A. flavipes is predicted to have an extensive inland and coastal distribution much larger than its recorded distribution. A. subtropicus is predicted to have a very narrow distribution in areas with high seasonal rainfall and high temperatures with low seasonality. All species are predicted to occur sympatrically, with A. stuartii and A. agilis predicted to have extensive overlap on the coast near Kioloa and to the immediate west and south-west of Sydney.

Fifty years ago, a group of 100 ivory carvings from West Africa was first identified by the English scholar William Fagg as constituting a coherent body of work. In making this important identification, Fagg proposed the descriptive label “Afro-Portuguese ivories.” Then, as now, the provenance and dating of these carved spoons, chalices (now recognized as salt cellars), horns, and small boxes posed a challenge to art historians. Fagg proposed three possible geographical origins: Sierra Leone, the Congo coast (Angola, ex-Zaïre), and the Yoruba-inhabited area of the old Slave Coast. Although Fagg was initially inclined on stylistic grounds to accept the Yoruba hypothesis, historical documents soon made it clear that the ivories—or at least many of them—were associated with Portuguese commerce in Sierra Leone. This trade developed in the final decades of the fifteenth century.Today approximately 150 works have been identified by scholars as belonging to the “corpus” of carved ivories from West Africa. Although the sobriquet “Afro-Portuguese” remains the most common appellation, these pieces should more appropriately be referred to as Luso-African ivories. The latter term more accurately reflects the objects' creation by West African sculptors who were working within Africa. The works, although hybrid in inspiration, are far more African than they are Portuguese. In addition, no documentary evidence exists to indicate that any of the ivories were carved by African artists living in Portugal. West African artists created the sculptures within the context of their own cultures.

Abstract The North Coasts of West Java are increasingly affected by human activities. The area has been utilized as settlement areas, industrial estates, and associated infrastructures including roads, school, hospital, market, etc. Consequently, this massive landuse and uncontrolled natural resources extraction have contributed to environmental degradation such as coastal erosion, accretion, pollution, inundation, and land subsidence. To date, we have so far very few field measurement data of land subsidence to support its importance. However, satellite image and on-ground observations used to determine spatio-temporal changes in the shoreline and area of inundation indicated the existence of land subsidence. Groundtruth data on selected areas also indicated the indicators of land subsidence such as damages of infrastructures including houses, roads, and sea dikes. The most noticeable shoreline changes in the North Coast of West Java are situated in Muara Gembong Bekasi and Legon Kulon Subang constituting maximum rates of shoreline retreat up to 200 and 150 m/year respectively for the last two decades (from 2000 to 2020). Whilst, the total areas of inundation in Muara Gembong and Legon Kulon based on recent satellite studies are 10.2 km2 and 7.4 km2 respectively. Coastal inundation might be linked to the combination of long-term behavior of oceanographic variables such as wave and sea level, in coincidence with hydrological changes due to river works (i.e. dam constructions and channellings) and an increase of settlement areas, fish ponds, groundwater extraction, etc. A set of preliminary engineering measures, in conjunction with sediment managing schemes, is proposed for the sustainable development of the coastal zone.

Abstract This study examined the relationships among hosts, parasites, and hyperparasites of oyster farming on the west coast of Taiwan from June 2012 to August 2013. In a region of Taisi (Taiwan), which was composed of near coast and far coast racks, a total of 77 155 oysters were collected. Among them, 1166 oysters were parasitized by pea crabs, with the rate of parasitism of oysters by the pea crab, Arcotheres sinensis (Shen, 1932) being 1.51%. A total 1523 pea crabs were collected with a sex ratio of females to males of 1.03 : 1. A total of 285 bopyrid isopod parasites Rhopalione sinensis Markham, 1990 were collected from the pea crabs. The hyperparasitic rate of female pea crabs was 22.1%, and the sex ratio of female to male isopods was 1.16 : 1. Most of the pea crabs entered their hosts when the crabs were small, which allowed them to grow within the host.

Macroalgae have attracted the interest of remote sensing as targets to study coastal marine ecosystems because of their key ecological role. The goal of this paper is to analyze a new spectral library, including 28 macroalgae from the South-West Atlantic coast, in order to assess its use in hyperspectral remote sensing. The library includes species collected in the Atlantic Patagonian coast (Argentina) with representatives of brown, red, and green algae, being 22 of the species included in a spectral library for the first time. The spectra of these main groups are described, and the intraspecific variability is also assessed, considering kelp differentiated tissues and depth range, discussing them from the point of view of their effects on spectral features. A classification and an independent component analysis using the spectral range and simulated bands of two state-of-the-art drone-borne hyperspectral sensors were performed. The results show spectral features and clusters identifying further algae taxonomic groups, showing the potential applications of this spectral library for drone-based mapping of this ecological and economical asset of our coastal marine ecosystems.

This article compares and contrasts the development of the legal systems of two British colonies that occuped almost opposite ends of the colonial judicial continuum: what in colonial times were known as the Gold Coast and Basutoland. Both became British colonies in the late nineteenth century, but followed considerably different paths to that status. In the case of the Gold Coast it followed centuries of contact between Europeans and the coastal peoples in this area of West Africa. In the case of Basutoland incorporation into the European world was a nineteenth-century phenomenon and far more rapid. Nevertheless, at the turn of the century, as indirect rule became the officially accepted wisdom as to how colonial peoples should be ruled, administrators in both colonies sought to make the chiefly order an integral part of the colony's administration and award its chiefs judicial responsibilities. In the Gold Coast, however, chiefly courts remained in competition with a highly developed British-style Supreme Court. In Basutoland there were basically only chiefly courts until late in the colonial period, which applied Sesotho customary law that was written down as the Laws of Lerotholi in 1903. The two-tier judicial system of the Gold Coast allowed far more contestation and was far more flexible and responsive to social changes than was the case in Basutoland. Incremental changes over time meant that the judicial system evolved far more smoothly than in Basutoland. When in the latter colony changes did not come ‘from above’ in the 1940s, there was a serious outbreak of ‘medicine murders’ that many observers felt was directly related to the chiefs losing their judicial role. Also, the colony's high court ruled against the validity of the Laws of Lerotholi in the controversial ‘Regency case’. Apart from being a return to comparative analyses of the impact of colonial rule on former African colonies, much in vogue in the 1960s, this study is an attempt to modify the emphasis on ‘cleavage’ and the ‘coercive’ that has characterised historians' approach to the study of colonial law.

German voyages of ‘discovery’ and field research in that part of Africa which, politically or linguistically, has been subject to Portuguese influence in past centuries, and still is so—an area which therefore corresponds for the most part (and also sufficiently so) to present-day Angola—has so far received only sporadic attention in corresponding historical writings. Nor for the most part have they been taken into account as ethnographic sources, language barriers above all being responsible for this. This is hardly because they are negligible in terms of either their numbers or the information they contain. In the last third of the nineteenth century especially, west-central Africa, in which Portuguese had been a lingua franca for centuries, became a special area of attraction for German travelers. Admittedly, the published results are far from even. One, Augspurger's, is interesting above all for the early date of his report. The scientific reputation of others, like the Jaspert brothers, is extremely dubious. For yet others, like Baum and Jessen, ethnographic documentation was of only marginal interest. The greater part of Wilhelm's sketches have been lost.On the other hand, one cannot write knowledgeably about the Loango coast without consulting Brun's and Pechuël-Loesche's reports. Any statement on northeast Angola in the last quarter of the nineteenth century will lose in value if one fails to use Pogge, Lux, Buchner, and Schütt. Studies on the Kisama without Mattenklodt or on the Cokwe without Baumann's great monograph would at best be a skeleton, at worst a distortion, in the context of what is possible.

The March for Science drew tens of thousands of scientists, science communicators, and science enthusiasts worldwide, with a mission statement that was strictly nonpartisan.“It was both exhilarating and exhausting in Washington, D.C., where we spent five hours standing in the rain at the foot of the Washington Monument,” said Alison S. Ricker, head of the Science Library at Oberlin College. “Inspiring messages from speakers and good music kept us energized for the eventual march along Constitution Avenue toward the U.S. Capitol. By the time we passed the EPA building, marchers and spectators were full of enthusiasm, shouting ‘fund the EPA!’ and ‘alternative facts have got to go!’”

We describe a new genus and species of hyperoliid tree-frog from the Upper Guinean rain forest, West Africa. Morerella gen. nov. Rödel, Kosuch, Grafe, Boistel & Veith is characterized by a slender body and large protruding eyes; a horizontal oval pupil; a small but distinct tympanum; a medium sized, medioposterior gular gland, without thin dilatable skin beneath and around the gland in males; spinosities on back and on extremities of males; sphenethmoid not visible dorsally; ventroanterior portion of sphenethmoid unfused; non-imbricate neural arches that do not completely roof the spinal canal; transverse processes of eighth vertebra not angled markedly forward; a greatly forked omosternum; a completely ossified sternum; posterolateral process of hyoid absent and anterior horn composed of an anteromedial and a lateral process; round discs on finger and toe tips; completely mineralized intercalary elements of phalanges; sexes dichromatic in coloration; short tonal advertisement call, notes grouped, not pulsed; terrestrial eggs and aquatic larval stages. The new genus differs genetically from other hyperoliid genera by 18-35% sequence divergence (>1300 bp of cytochrome b, 16S and 12S rRNA sequences). Its phylogenetic relationships within this family remain obscure. So far the genus is comprised of one species, Morerella cyanophthalma sp. nov. Rödel, Assemian, Kouamé, Tohé & Perret, that is only known from a few sites in the Banco National Park, Ivory Coast. Specimens from another Ivorian locality, the Azagny National Park, may be conspecific. Based on the IUCN red list criteria, the new species is classified as Critically Endangered.

Copepods are well studied in South Korea, with the exception of marine non-parasitic cyclopoids, and especially cyclopinids; only three species were found so far here, and only one of them is endemic. A survey of intertidal interstitial faunas from sandy beaches revealed four endemic members of the genus Cyclopina Claus, 1863, which represents the first record of the largest cyclopinid genus in South Korea. A detailed study of their morphology revealed numerous differences, including in rarely studied cuticular organs. Some of these micro-characters could easily be homologised and showed little intraspecific variability, which might prove invaluable for matching sexes and reconstructing phylogenetic relationships. Cyclopina busanensissp. nov. is described from both sexes collected near Busan (South Coast of South Korea), and is most similar to the only congener from Japan: C. kiraensis Horomi, 1984. Cyclopina koreanasp. nov. is described from both sexes collected near Gangneung (East Coast), and has no close relatives among currently known species. Cyclopina curtijejusp. nov. is described from two females from Jeju (off South Coast); it is possibly closely related to C. smirnovi Herbst, 1982, but the latter is known from a single male from the Russian Far East. Cyclopina widosp. nov. is described from both sexes from Wido (West Coast), and shows numerous reductions in segmentation and armature of appendages, most of them probably a consequence of its diminutive size. A table of 26 discrete and continuous characters commonly used in the taxonomy of this group is provided for 48 valid species and subspecies of Cyclopina.

The Malagueta Coast can serve as a classic example of a region which was integrated into the world economy as a result of world demand for its resources—spices and labor in the fifteenth/sixteenth centuries, and again in the nineteenth century palm oil, cocos fiber, and labor—and has sunk into oblivion once the demand ceased. It is similar with Liberia's rubber and iron ore industry of the twentieth century. I had wanted to write this paper, which reconstructs the discovery and commercial exploitation of the coast through a systematic analysis of published maps and reports, ever since I walked and paddled along this coast in 1968. Furthermore I intend to review the discovery of the coast in the perspective of overall Portuguese policy and politics (interior and foreign). Last, but not least, this is to help students of Liberian and West African history with a review of the early sources—among which maps are by far the most abundant. The Portuguese legacy to Africa is enshrined in coastal toponymy until today. Avelino Teixeira da Mota in his “Topónimos de origem portuguesa” focused on Portuguese names still surviving in the nineteenth century, but I will focus here on contemporary fifteenth- and sixteenth-century nomenclature and what it might reveal about the African discoveries. The Portuguese initially were attracted by gold at the Rio d'Ouro (later Spanish Sahara), then slaves, and eventually malagueta—a substitute for Indian pepper—commodities known on the Lisbon market and which served to name the coasts: malagueta, marfim, ouro, esclavos. Diogo Gomes was the first to actually see Malagueta on the Gambia in 1445, but the malagueta coast was not discovered until after Henry's the Navigator's death in 1460.

The field survey results obtained by the team of authors in the north of Miyagi Prefecture are summarized referring to a part of the survey results by other teams of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami Joint Survey Group. The inundation height above sea level was measured using a laser range finder with a reflection prism. The inundation height was generally larger at bay heads, as well as cave tips, except several points, which were sheltered by a peninsula or had a tapering area. The tsunamis reached inland far away from the sea along valleys and rivers. Not only steel frame buildings but also many reinforced concrete buildings were collapsed in Onagawa Town. According to the numerical simulation, the first tsunami from the west coast and the second tsunami from the east coast should come together in Utatsusaki Peninsula, which is consistent with the interviews to survivors.

In South India Cochin is well known for its Jewish settlement, but the rich Muslim heritage of the town has so far remained almost unknown. A reason for this anonymity lies perhaps in that the Muslim community of Cochin – unlike that of Calicut – while highly influential in the commerce of the region, kept a low profile with regard to political affairs, at least from the time of the appearance of the Portuguese. Cochin, situated at 9° 58′ N and 760° 14′ E, occupies the northern part of a long stretch of land, about half a kilometre south of the Island of Vypin (Baypin or Vypeen) and 1.5 km west of the shores of the mainland, now occupied by the modern town of Ernakulam. Between Cochin and Ernakulam is a long expanse of sheltered but navigable water, at the mouth of which is Willingdon Island, housing the modern sea port and the airport.
