This article explores the relevance of the concept of Silk Road for understanding the patterns of trade and exchange between China, Eurasia and the Middle East. It is based on ethnographic fieldwork in the city of Yiwu, in China's Zhejiang Province. Yiwu is a node in the global distribution of Chinese ‘small commodities’ and home to merchants and traders from across Asia and beyond. The article explores the role played by traders from Afghanistan in connecting the city of Yiwu to markets and trading posts in the world beyond. It seeks to bring attention to the diverse types of networks involved in such forms of trade, as well as their emergence and development over the past thirty years.

Locating justice in the city can be a difficult task. Urban theory has focused on exposing injustice and critiquing the multiple occurrences of injustice in cities. But what role could uncovering practices of actually existing justice in the city play in critical theory? How would we begin to look for actually existing justice in the here and now? By adopting a performative ontology and a politics of possibility, I argue that it is possible to expose, propose and amplify (Iveson, 2010) actually existing justice practices in the everyday city. A shift in thinking and research approach may be needed to make theoretical and ontological space for justice. In this paper I discuss research approaches that assist in locating justice in the city. Theorisations of a politics of possibility, performative ontological politics, weak theory and reading for difference are a suite of research practices that make space for the presence of justice. I argue that cities can be sites of actually existing justice practiced as a response to situated injustices or as a way of doing/being/thinking the city differently and demonstrate this with the example of Alfalfa House Organic Food Cooperative, Sydney, Australia. Documenting how justice is expressed in our cities is essential for work that seeks to grow and nurture justice projects.

As an abandoned mining area, Huanglong Mountain Purple Sand Mining Area in Dingshu Town, Yixing City, Jiangsu Province has entered a state of suspension of production. This study draws on successful cases and retrofits the abandoned mining area in Huanglong Mountain into a “source of purple sand” community park. With purple sand (the represent of the urban) as the core, museums are built to realize the restoration of the ruins and at the same time display the culture as well as history of the development of purple sand mining and pottery industry through photos and historical documents. This community park also provides ordinary pottery artists with opportunities to display their works and participate in cultural inheritance through workshop, narrating their learning experience to encourage youngsters. Some basic facilities like teahouses, restaurants, hotels and bazaars associated with local elements are created in the park to help tourists to experience the local pottery art life and boost economy prosperity of the city.

The article focuses on the range of problems arising on the way of innovative technologies implementation in the structure of existing cities. The concept of intellectualization of historic cities, as illustrated by Samara, is offered, which was chosen for the realization of a large Russian project “Smart City. Successful Region” in 2018. One of the problems was to study the experience of information hubs projecting with the purpose of determination of their priority functional directions. The following typology of information hubs was made: scientific and research ones, scientific and technical ones, innovative and cultural ones, cultural and informational ones, scientific and informational ones, technological ones, centres for data processing, scientific centres with experimental and production laboratories. As a result of the conducted research, a suggestion on smart city’s infrastructure is developed, the final levels of innovative technologies implementation in the structure of historic territories are determined. A model suggestion on the formation of a scientific and project centre with experimental and production laboratories branded as named “Park-plant” is developed. Smart (as well as real) city technologies, which are supposed to be placed on the territory of “Park-plant”, are systematized. The organizational structure of the promotion of model projects is offered according to the concept of “triad of development agents”, in which the flagship university – urban community – park-plant interact within the project programme. The effects of the development of the being renovated territory of the historic city centre are enumerated.

Design the contemporary city and architecture means, first of all, dealing with the existing, a huge amount of abandoned space, of uninhabited factories, of crumbling artefacts, of an entire territory which asks to be taken care of. After years of urban sprawl with soil consumption, it is necessary to rethink the way of planning in the existing contexts of the contemporary city and its environmental sustainability. The immediacy of new constructions is often preferred to the recycling of existing ones that work in the long term and return value to the places and their historical stratifications. This is why today the reuse of the existing represents the real emergency to face with a process of regeneration of cities and their territories, where the architectural project, with the contribution of other disciplines - such as archaeology and restoration, geography and landscape design - represents the only instrument able to offer an answer to the current problems of urban structures. Reuse is actually a necessity as well as an emergency; reuse is the ontological condition of architecture because every building has always recycled materials and spaces to reshape the new and we need to analyse past examples of reuse in order to create a methodology for the design reuse of existing structures. This paper aims to contribute to the definition of a teaching methodology of reuse through design and proposes an approach that interprets those characters of the different architectural forms of the existing modernist buildings.

The presence of tourist buses is considered to be a factor in Yogyakarta’s traffic congestion in long holiday season. Research was conducted to plan a tourism transportation, called Trans Jogja Wisata that is integrated with other public transport services to accommodate tourist movement from park and ride locations to tourist attractions. Data collection was done by carrying out surveys and interviews at a parking location in Yogyakarta. The data collected included tourist destinations, bus gateways to Yogyakarta, and environmental conditions. Based on the analysis results for planning Trans Jogja Wisata’s integration with existing public transport, there are four designated routes that can be used to accommodate tourists in getting to their destinations: Route 1, Route 2, Route 3, and Route 4. These routes are fully integrated with the Trans Jogja bus system, becak or pedicabs, andong or horse drawn carriages and Si Thole mini buses.

The analysis of the bicycle infrastructure in Novosibirsk is carried out. The principles of functioning and the current state of the bicycle infrastructure are considered. A number of problems in this field were identified, including the lack of a unified bicycle transport network and the insecurity of the movement of cyclists in the traffic stream. The results of the research will be used in the development of an geographic information system designed to analyze the city bicycle infrastructure. This system will visualize the main elements of the bicycle infrastructure on an interactive map, construct bicycle routes, and also collect data on the state of the infrastructure through interaction with users. The geographic information system will be useful in the development of strategy for the designing of the bicycle infrastructure of the city by the relevant departments, and it will also find its application as an information and navigation system for bike owners.

An attempt has been made to investigate the outbreak of dengue fever over Dhaka city by examining the preexisting condition of weather elements over Bangladesh. For the study, the maximum temperature, minimum temperature, rainfall, humidity data is analyzed to find the optimum values which trigger the dengue fever over Dhaka city. If the pre-existing weather phenomena are analyzed and compute, it will be possible to settle down which elements are responsible for spreading dengue fever over Dhaka city in 2019. The average minimum and maximum temperature were relatively high in winter season of 2019 than that of the winter of 2018 which may trigger epidemic dengue fever. In June increased temperature and intermittent rainfall (260mm within 17 days) which is also causes of spreading dengue. This is why, Dhaka city, 51,777 dengue cases have occurred from 1st January to 31 December 2019 on the other hand 50,726 dengue cases had occurred during 2000–2018. In the future, due to climate change and its unstable weather phenomena, weak administrator, unplanned urbanization, environmental erosion, and increasing population, dengue risk will be high. If Dhaka city people are not conscious, dengue may increase more upcoming years due to the possibility of increasing temperature, the occurrence of abnormal rainfall, the environmental condition of Dhaka city, and attack trend of previous years. Jalan nasional di Kota Ambon menghubungkan antara Bandara Pattimura dengan Pelabuhan Yos Sudarso memiliki akses ganda dengan kondisi jalan paralel. Beberapa ruas jalan tidak menerus seperti Jalan A.M. Sangadji dan Jalan Rijali, memiliki dua lajur tetapi masih satu arah. Artikel ini bertujuan mengkaji kapasitas kedua segmen jalan nasional eksisting di Kota Ambon berdasarkan kondisi masing-masing ruas jalan menurut LHR, hambatan samping dan persyaratan jalan menerus. Kajian dilakukan terstruktur dan sistematis sesuai tahapan ilmiah menggunakan data hasil pantauan lapangan serta data sekunder terkini dari sumber data di unit kerja BPJN XVI Ambon meliputi Segmen I (Jalan Bawah) dan Segmen II (Jalan Atas). Hasil kajian terpilih tiga alternatif akses jalan nasional, yaitu: Alternatif Pertama, menggunakan akses jalan nasional Segmen I dengan rekomendasi Reklamasi Pantai Mardika, menghubungkan 6 ruas jalan masing-masing: Jalan Yos Sudarso, Jalan Pala, Jalan Pantai Mardika, Jalan Pantai Batu Merah, Jalan Ongko Liong, dan Jalan Sultan Hasanuddin. Alternatif Kedua, menggunakan akses jalan nasional Segmen II dengan rekomendasi Pembangunan Jalan Layang (flyover), menghubungkan 6 ruas jalan masing-masing: Jalan Pelabuhan, Jalan A.M. Sangadji, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Ahmad Yani, Jalan Rijali, dan Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. Purpose. The purpose of the work is to determine the directions for improvement the methods of formation of structures of track development of railway stations and their technical and technological assessment. Method. To determine the areas for improvement the methods of forming structures of track development of railway stations and their technical and technological evaluation, it is necessary to analyze the known scientific approaches, identify their weaknesses and strengths. Based on the analysis of these approaches to develop generalized procedures for the formation of rational structures of track development and evaluation of technical and technological parameters of railway stations. To develop the first procedure, it is necessary to choose the optimization criterion. Results. The paper analyzes the known scientific approaches to the formation of structures of track development of railway stations and their technical and technological evaluation. As a result, it was determined that the most effective way to calculate the design parameters of railway stations is to use automated design procedures, effective ways to calculate technological parameters and evaluate design decisions is to use simulation methods. The generalized procedures of formation of rational designs of track development of railway stations and their technical and technological estimation are offered. Scientific and practical significance. Improved procedures for the formation of rational structures of track development of railway stations and their technical and technological evaluation, which in contrast to the existing ones are based on determining the costs of the railway station with the cumulative total for the calculation period or project life cycle. The implementation of rational design solutions will ensure the implementation of the specified size of train and shunting operations of railway stations with a sufficient reserve of capacity and minimum costs. In addition, the results of technical and technological assessment of track development structures can be the basis for adjusting certain requirements for the construction of station necks.

Purpose. Analysis of the problem of quality functioning of the city passenger transport system of Marhanets in order to develop proposals to improve the quality of transport services. Methodology. To determine the capacities of areas of origin and arrival of passengers used tabular method. Graph theory was used in the development of the topological scheme. The gravitational model was used to calculate the matrix of interdistrict correspondence. Findings. The analysis of the current state of the existing route transport network of Marhanets is performed; the topological scheme of the city is developed; the characteristic of operating city routes is presented; the capacities of transport districts are determined, the matrix of interdistrict correspondence is calculated; the assessment of the existing route network is performed, the initial route network is formed; determined time spent on approaching the stops. Originality. The study of the process of transportation of passengers on the transport network of Marhanets will allow to develop proposals for improving the passenger route network to improve the quality of transport services to the population of the city. Practical value. The practical significance of the work is that the development of a rational passenger route network will improve the quality of transport services for the population of Marhanets, reduce the time spent by passengers to approach the stops and improve the quality of passenger service.

Abstract Poznań, a city in central-western Poland, is located in the lowland region but has no less attractive geomorphological and human history. It was here that Poland was born at the end of the tenth century. The city’s location is connected with the meridian course of the Warta River valley. In contrast, in the northern part of the city, there is a vast area of the frontal moraines of the Poznań Phase of the Weichselian Glaciation. Against the backdrop of the geomorphological development of the city, the article presents the existing geosites, classified as urban geosites. The present geosites include three lapidaries with Scandinavian postglacial erratics, one of them also with stoneware, a fragment of a frontal push moraine and impact craters. Besides, three locations of proposed geosites with rich geomorphological and/or human history were identified. These are as follows: the peat bog located in the northern part of the city, defence ramparts as exhumed anthropogenic forms, and the Warta River valley. The existing and proposed geosites in Poznań were evaluated in three ways. In general, it should be assumed that the proposed new geosites are higher ranked than the current ones.

The purpose of this research is to demystify literature on aerotropolis using systematic review. Literature on aerial life and aeronautical studies suggests that airports are frequently cited outside urban centres. However, recent events surrounding the growth of aerotropolis contradicts existing realities. In fact, the pull and push factors constitute the life cycle of aerotropolis in urban enclaves. In generating data for this study, Dimensions, an artificial intelligence databank, was adopted, and a hybrid method which combines both VOSviewer and Citespace software was the preferred analytical tool for analysis. Key findings were imperative in establishing certain parameters regarding aerial life, including but not limited to knowledge about the technologies adopted, quality of stakeholders, in addition to existing relationships of urban space, urbanisation, and geography. Furthermore, two recurrent themes were identified, such as the development in ICT, and smart technologies, which corresponds with the multiple potentials that exist for developing sustainable airports, such as eco-innovation, greenovation, and social innovation. This study contributes to the concept of transit-bound tourism, a concept we coined to depict the role tourism can play in transit philosophy and economics.

For example, the population of this port city is 14,200 people per square kilometer and there is a struggle to provide open space. Again, the planning proposal did not set any open space standard to achieve its open space aspirations Hence, the objectives of this paper are four-fold: (i) Develop an understanding of open space standards to establish relative benchmarks for potential use in Chittagong. (ii) Examine existing formal open space in Chittagong. (iii) Document the existing informal open space areas in Chittagong according to the planning direction. (iv) Recommend an approach that can be used to realize open spaces in Chittagong. To achieve these, this paper documents the existing open space scenario in the city, examines the recommended open space standards developed by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Dhaka Structural Plan (2016–2035) (the planning document of the capital city of Bangladesh) to identify to what extent these ‘benchmark’ standards are appropriate for use in the city. A discussion on open space in Chittagong and the criteria used to ‘frame’ open space calculations in the city is then conducted to provide a foundation to reflect upon the world’s various open space recommendations. Ultimately, by analyzing existing open space recommendations and their associated well-being aspirations, the research suggests that a new standard relating to the unique characteristics of the city should be used when developing open space standards in Chittagong.

Background. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence rate of severe allergic reactions to hymenoptera sting according to data, gathered by specialized allergological department of Kazan hospital No. 7 in 2000-2011. Materials and Methods. 493 patients hospitalized during the period of 2000-2011 with anaphylactic shock (ASh) including 133 patients with ASh to Hymenoptera sting were analised. Results. The study showed a high frequency of ASh developed as a result of hymenoptera sting comparing with total cases of ASh hospitalizations (27%, Cl: 23-31%). In most ASh cases was caused by wasps stings (52%, Cl: 43-60%). Male patients are supposed to be more vulnerable to the risk of stings (58%, Cl: 50-66%). More often ASh showed acute cardiovascular symptoms (79,7%, Cl: 72-85%). Emergency crews used epinefrine in order to relieve ASh only in 30% of cases (30%, Cl: 22-38%). Conclusion. Systemic allergic reactions to Hymenoptera sting prevalence shows the need for registration of allergens for immunotherapy and injection pen with epinefrine for selfhelp in case of ASh development with in the territory of Russian Federation.

The article presents the possibilities of integrated approach to the renovation of industrial areas, considering architectural and planning concepts, new functions and carrying out structural surveys of existing industrial buildings. The feasibility of industrial facilities renovation, the introduction of new functions required by certain areas of the city lead to the economic, social, cultural, psychological and aesthetic development of the areas. Nowadays the development trends of large cities are such that industrial enterprises are moved outside the city center or even the city. Furthermore adverse environmental effects are significantly reduced in the city. Methods of adapting production facilities to new functions are determined. Definitions of residual load-bearing capacities of production shops building structures and design features, as well as deformations identified during operation, are formed.

The <i>urban analytics</i> expression is spreading out. To our understanding, it deals with the capability of <i>measuring</i> cities and their communities, as a support to their effective planning and management. In other words, being an analytically well-known city is a precondition for pursuing smartness. Urban planning is a very important item for city management and is interrelated with many layers, including urban environmental quality, air quality and well-being. Effective urban planning is based on the knowledge of quantitative parameters such as the <i>biotope area factor</i> (BAF), which was originally proposed for the city of Berlin and is currently used in other cities. The BAF index is used to evaluate the degree of soil permeability and measures, to a certain extent and from a specific point of view, how a city is eco-friendly. The usual way of evaluating the BAF is based on the manual construction of dedicated maps, using existing orthophotos and oblique imagery as a support. But this method is expensive, time-consuming and non-objective, as it is prone to different interpretations. The paper presents a newly-developed methodology for calculating the BAF. It is based on the use of existing digital cartography and on the application of geoprocessing techniques from GIS science: it is therefore fully automated and objective. The Pavia city (Northern Italy) is used as a testsite and a careful validation of the developed methodology is carried out, by comparison to 12 manually surveyed test areas, corresponding to 5% of the built-up areas of the municipality.

In cities around the world, housing demand is increasing rapidly. Since housing supply is inelastic, house prices are rising as well, which causes affordability problems. Although there is consensus about the need to raise production, there is debate about its location: within the existing city, on underused or derelict buildings and sites, or on greenfield land outside existing city boundaries? The question we address is how researchers on the science–policy interface can support these debates and facilitate evidence-based decision-making. We address two major problems while doing this: (1) the complexity of the object at hand, that is, of the development of urban systems and (2) the politicised nature of science-for-policy. The contribution of this paper is that it links complexity theory to the literature about science-for-policy, two usually unconnected literatures. An additional contribution is that it shows how the role of the scientist as ‘honest broker’, as developed by Roger Pielke, can be operationalised and applied to existing policy debates. We do that for the Dutch debate about housing development in existing urban areas.

The African continent is urbanizing at a breakneck pace and our cities are in a state of crisis. The causes may vary, so also is the degree of severity, but there is a widely felt sense of urban problems requiring urgent solutions. The nature of the problems is complex, with economic, social, educational, political and physical factors playing major roles in exacerbating the situation. Yet, whatever is perceived to be the most serious physical problems in a city, one key underlying question always present is: What can be done about the disaffection of people for their own urban environments? This issue of fragility may be seen in simple terms of a drop in the perceived desirability of the city as a place one can to live, work or shop in. Whatever the name, the fact is that too many Nigerian cities are becoming unattractive to many citizens and residents. This paper aims at identifying the various ways of assembling a fragile city. Through the review of existing literature, the paper highlights the causes of city fragility focusing on three Nigerian cities. It also discusses fragility as the main hurdle to implementing Sustainable Development Goals and how fragile situation birth architecture of fear. Then, it concludes by noting that developing nations in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria need to be proactive in deconstructing their fragile cities.

In 1980, the City of Portland began a conversion project to change out all existing mercury vapor street lights to high pressure sodium. During the planning and design portion of the project, the City hired a consulting firm to look at our existing system and make recommendations as to light source and fixture configuration. After some on site studies of existing street lighting, it was recommended that all arterial streets of the City of Portland be converted from mercury vapor to high pressure cut-off fixtures, in order to cut down glare in the eyes of drivers. Secondly, it was recommended that, on arterial streets, the City could no longer afford to light “key-hole to key-hole.” It was important to confine the light to the street right-of-way.

Active mobility, active travel, active transport, and active transportation are synonyms of transport of people that only use their physical activity for the need to travel. The most known forms of active mobility are walking and cycling, though the skateboard, kick scooter or roller skates are also a form of active mobility. The city of Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and the largest seaside city in the country. In the high tourist season, the city shows much more street problems than usual. The congestion seems to be greater each and every year and this affects active transportation. As a result of the dominant character of the private car in our everyday life, it seems that the active forms of transport are being neglected. To change this trend an integrated transport policy is required where the pedestrians will be placed in the center of the daily agenda. One of the very important components to support active mobility is the policy framework. It should guarantee that all forms of active mobility have also rights as users of the streets and are not neglected in the planning process. The current study aims to analyze the existing relevant national and local (for the city of Varna) regulations regarding walking and cycling and to evaluate the degree of policy support in order to respect their rights and needs. The existences of the relevant policies and how they are implemented is a matter of the study. The collected data about the regulatory framework is evaluated using the content analysis method.

Culture-led urban regeneration is an influential planning strategy in Western countries, which is to maintain the city character while enhancing the overall competitiveness of the city through the construction of cultural development to meet the urban environment of the new cultural needs. For the moment, the rapid development of social economy of Chongqing has accelerated its urbanization process. As one of the available land stock resources of urban, existing-blocks need updating to meet the new environmental requirements immediately because of physical and functional decline. So it is essential to consider the strategy of culture-led urban regeneration synthetically. It can not only maintain the social network structure and neighborhood relationship of the existing-blocks to continue urban context while improving its image, but also provide a sustainable competitive city. Taking existing-blocks in Chongqing as the main research object, analyze the current characteristics of the existing-blocks, then put forward the culture-led planning strategy from macro, micro and mid-scale to adapt the development of Chongqing existing-blocks by drawing on the experience at home and abroad.

A review of experience following recent damaging earthquakes shows that the reasons for repair and rehabilitation of damaged or inadequate structures varied greatly and often had little to do with structural issues. Cost of rehabilitation was found to be related not only to construction costs, but also to rents and leasable space, as well as to the costs associated with loss of revenue in case of damage during an earthquake which might curtail operations in the building. Design code requirements may impose restrictions that make it infeasible to rehabilitate some structures. Psychological and aesthetic issues dominated some projects. The purpose of this paper is to outline the divergent issues involved in the rehabilitation of a structure. The contrasts between the experience following Mexico City 1985 and Loma Prieta 1989 are striking.
