INTRODUCTION & AIMS Exercise prescriptions for chronic low back pain (CLBP) often utilize reductionistic, trunk-focused exercise aimed at addressing proposed pain mechanisms. It is unknown if the use of these trunk focussed exercises imply beliefs to people with CLBP about the rationale for their use (e.g., aetiology), even without concurrent biomedical narratives. This study aimed to explore people’s perceptions of specific and general exercise without an accompanying narrative when experiencing CLBP. METHODS An anonymous online survey was distributed. Mixed methods were utilised for analysis. Six-point Likert scales categorised people’s beliefs about individual exercises. Open-ended questions were used to gather further beliefs which were then coded into themes. RESULTS 109 people with CLBP perceived specific exercise as more beneficial than general exercise. Eight themes and five sub-themes were defined. A high volume of positive beliefs were centred around strengthening the low back and abdominal musculature, emphasising the importance of correct technique. Negative beliefs were held against spinal flexion and external load. Both positive and negative beliefs were underpinned by spinal/pelvic stability being important as well as certain exercises being achievable or not. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that people with CLBP consider specific exercises to be more beneficial than general exercises for CLBP. Specific exercises irrespective of an accompanying narrative can imply meaning about the intent of an exercise. Understanding this requires practitioners to be mindful when prescribing and communicating exercise.

Abstract Background and Purpose. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the usefulness of the addition of specific stabilization exercises to a general back and abdominal muscle exercise approach for patients with subacute or chronic nonspecific back pain by comparing a specific muscle stabilization–enhanced general exercise approach with a general exercise–only approach. Subjects. Fifty-five patients with recurrent, nonspecific back pain (stabilization–enhanced exercise group: n=29, general exercise–only group: n=26) and no clinical signs suggesting spinal instability were recruited. Methods. Both groups received an 8-week exercise intervention and written advice (The Back Book). Outcome was based on self-reported pain (Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire), disability (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire), and cognitive status (Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, Pain Locus of Control Scale) measured immediately before and after intervention and 3 months after the end of the intervention period. Results. Outcome measures for both groups improved. Furthermore, self-reported disability improved more in the general exercise–only group immediately after intervention but not at the 3-month follow-up. There were generally no differences between the 2 exercise approaches for any of the other outcomes. Discussion and Conclusion. A general exercise program reduced disability in the short term to a greater extent than a stabilization-enhanced exercise approach in patients with recurrent nonspecific low back pain. Stabilization exercises do not appear to provide additional benefit to patients with subacute or chronic low back pain who have no clinical signs suggesting the presence of spinal instability.

Background Recently, ski exergames have been gaining popularity due to the growing interest in health improvement. Conventional studies evaluating the effects of ski exergames only considered exercise capacity and overlooked concentration. Ski exergames consist of a motion platform for exercise and virtual reality (VR) content in the game. The VR content enhances the exercise capacity and concentration of the user by providing a challenging goal. Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of VR and non-VR exercises on the exercise capacity and concentration of users in a ski exergame. Methods To examine the effects of the VR content in ski exergames, we performed 2 experiments, non-VR exercise and VR exercise, where participants exercised on the motion platform. If a user performs an exercise without using any VR content, it is a non-VR exercise. Contrastingly, in the case of VR exercise, a user exercises according to the VR content (a downhill scenario). In addition to the range of motion (ROM) of the ankle and rated perceived exertion (RPE) to assess exercise capacity, we used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess users’ concentration. Results We evaluated the effects of the VR content by comparing the results obtained from VR and non-VR exercises. The ROM of the ankle with VR exercise was wider than that with non-VR exercise. Specifically, ROM of the ankle was 115.71° (SD 17.71°) and 78.50° (SD 20.43°) in VR exercise and non-VR exercise, respectively. The RPE difference between the 2 exercises was not statistically significant. The result of the sensorimotor rhythm waves (which are concentration-related EEG signals) was more favorable for VR exercise than non-VR exercise. The ratios of sensorimotor rhythm wave in EEG were 3.08% and 2.70% in the VR exercise and non-VR exercise, respectively. Conclusions According to the results of this experiment, higher exercise capability and concentration were achieved with the VR exercise compared with non-VR exercise. The observations confirm that VR content can enhance both exercise capability and concentration of the user. Thus, the ski exergames can be used effectively by those who, in general, do not like exercise but enjoy games.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the “effectiveness of isometric exercises as compared to general exercises along with cervical spinal mobilization to reduce pain, disability and to increase range of motion in chronic non-specific neck pain”For this randomized controlled experiment total 32 patients (16 in each group) with chronic non-specific neck pain were recruited from physiotherapy Ward Mayo Hospital Lahore, Department of Physiotherapy King Edward Medical University Lahore between October, 2019 and March, 2020. Simple randomization method was used to assign participants into isometric exercise group and general exercise with cervical spine mobilization group. The isometric exercise group performed exercises for neck muscle groups with a rubber band and general exercises with cervical mobilization group performed active range of movement exercises for all neck movements. Patients in both groups received 4 supervised treatment sessions per week for 6 weeks. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Neck disability index Questionnaire and goniometer were used to assess pain, disability and neck range of movements at baseline and after 6 weeks. Both interventions showed statistically significant improvements in pain, function and range of movement p = 0.001for isometric exercise group, p = 0.05 for general exercises group and p= <0.001 for range of movement. However, mean improvements in post intervention VAS score and Neck disability index Questionnaire score was better in isometric exercises group as compared to general exercise group. In conclusion, both interventions are effective in the treatment of chronic non- specific neck pain however; isometric exercises are clinically more effective than general exercises with cervical spine mobilization.

Objective. In a cohort of primary care patients with chronic neck pain, to determine whether specific neck stabilization exercises, in addition to general neck advice and exercise, provide better clinical outcome at 6 weeks than general neck advice and exercise alone.Methods.This was a multicenter randomized controlled trial in 4 physical therapy departments. Seventy-four participants (mean age 51.3 yrs) were randomized to specific neck stabilization exercises with a general neck advice and exercise program (n = 37) or a general neck advice and exercise program alone (n = 37). They attended a 1-hour clinical examination, followed by a maximum of 4 treatment sessions. Assessments were undertaken at baseline, 6 weeks, and 6 months. The primary outcome was the Neck Pain and Disability Scale (NPDS). Analysis was by intention to treat.Results.Seventy-one (96%) participants received their allocated intervention. There was 91% followup at 6 weeks and 92% followup at 6 months. The mean (SD) 6-week improvement (reduction) in NPDS score was 10.6 (20.2) for the specific exercise program and 9.3 (15.7) for the general exercise program. There were no significant between-group differences in the NPDS at either 6 weeks or 6 months. For secondary outcomes, participants in the specific exercise group were less likely to be taking pain medication at 6-week followup (p = 0.02). There were no other significant between-group differences.Conclusion.Adding specific neck stabilization exercises to a general neck advice and exercise program did not provide better clinical outcome overall in the physical therapy treatment of chronic neck pain.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of specific neck muscle training and general neck-shoulder exercises on neck proprioception, pain, and disability in patients with chronic non-specific neck pain. Methods: Twenty-five patients with chronic non-specific neck pain were recruited into this preliminary single-blinded randomized clinical trial. They were randomly assigned to either a specific neck exercise (n = 13, mean aged 24 years) or a general neck exercise group (n = 12, mean aged 25 years). Specific neck exercises included eye-head coordination and isometric deep neck muscle exercises. General neck exercises included neck and shoulder free range of motion and shoulder shrug. Pain, disability, and neck proprioception, which was determined using the joint repositioning error, were measured at baseline and after eight weeks of training in both groups. Results: Both training groups showed significant improvements in joint repositioning error (p < 0.001, F = 24.144, ES = 0.8), pain (p < 0.001, F = 61.118, ES = 0.31), and disability (p = 0.015, F = 6.937, ES = 0.60). However, the specific neck exercise group showed larger variability in joint repositioning error (p = 0.006, F = 0.20, F critical = 0.36). Conclusions: Either specific neck exercise or a general neck-shoulder range of motion exercise could be effective in improving neck proprioception. Therefore, exercises could be recommended based on patient comfort and patients’ specific limitations.

Background: Home-based rehabilitation exercise following Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) shows similar outcomes compared to supervised outpatient rehabilitation exercise. Little is known about patients' experiences with home-based rehabilitation, and this study aimed to investigate how patients perceived home-based rehabilitation exercise and general physical activity after THA, focusing on facilitators and barriers. Methods: Semi-structured interviews of qualitative design were conducted with 22 patients who had undergone THA and who had performed home-based rehabilitation exercise. The study took place in a regional hospital in Denmark between January 2018 and May 2019. Data were analyzed using an interpretive thematic analysis approach, with theoretical underpinning from the concept ‘conduct of everyday life’. The study is embedded within the Pragmatic Home-Based Exercise Therapy after Total Hip Arthroplasty-Silkeborg trial (PHETHAS-1). Results: The main theme, ‘wishing to return to the well-known everyday life’, and the subtheme ‘general physical activity versus rehabilitation exercise’ were identified. Generally, participants found the home-based rehabilitation exercise boring but were motivated by the goal of returning to their well-known everyday life and performing their usual general physical activities. Participants enrolled in the PHETHAS-1 study used the enrollment as part of their motivation for doing the exercises. Both pain and the absence of pain were identified as barriers for doing home-based rehabilitation exercise. Pain could cause insecurity about possible medical complications, while the absence of pain could lead to the rehabilitation exercise being perceived as pointless. Conclusions: The overall goal of returning to the well-known everyday life served as a facilitator for undertaking home-based rehabilitation exercise after THA along with the flexibility regarding time and place for performing exercises. Boring exercises as well as both pain and no pain were identified as barriers to the performance of home-based rehabilitation exercise. Participants were motivated towards performing general physical activities which were part of their everyday life.

Aim of study: To identify the effectiveness of particular trunk stabilization versus a general exercise in low back pain management. Methodology: An experimental study was conducted at the physiotherapy department of Dow University of Health Sciences, 52 participants with low backache were enrolled and assessed for pain intensity using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and disability by using the Modified Oswestry Low Back Disability Index (MOLBDQ-I). Through equal randomization one group got their low back pain treated through trunk stabilization exercises while the other with general exercises, 3times/week* 4weeks. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 by applying non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: This study demonstrated that males and females are equally affected by chronic low back pain. Trunk stabilizing and general exercise regimes both significantly reduced the pain and disability in the study population but the effectiveness of trunk stabilizing exercises were significantly superior in reducing pain. Limitations and Future Implications: Study did not include a control group that received no intervention. It would be valuable to assess the cost-effectiveness of trunk stabilization exercises compared to general exercises or other interventions. Originality: Trunk stabilizing exercises are superior in reducing pain, disability, and restoring functional mobility than general exercises in chronic back pain. Conclusion: Trunk stabilizing exercises are superior in reducing pain, disability, and restoring functional mobility than general exercises in chronic back pain.

Aim: Unilateral exercise training is an effective and useful technique, especially in immobilization and neurological conditions, but the effect of unilateral muscle exercise training on muscle strength is modest. Therefore, the aim of this study is to detect the acute concomitant effect of mirror therapy and unilateral exercise training on muscle strength and joint position sense in healthy adults.Method: Thirty-one participants were randomly enrolled in two groups the mirror (n=16) and control groups (n=15). Hand grip (HG), pinch grip (PG) strengths, and joint position sense (JPS) of the wrist were assessed in both hands before and after a single exercise session which include 300 repetitive ball squeezing exercises by right (exercised) hand for all groups. The participants in the mirror group were asked to watch the mirror to see the reflection of their exercised hands, the control group only watched their exercised and unexercised hands without any visual feedback support during the exercise session. Repeated Measure ANOVA and Mixed ANOVA tests were performed to analyze in- and between-group differences. Results: The statistically significant differences were determined in unexercised hand HG and PG strength in the mirror group (F=10,105; p=0,006, ηp2=0,403; F=5,341; p=0,035; ηp2=0,263, respectively). However, any group×time interaction was found in JPS, HG, or PG tests (p<0;05). Additionally, no difference was shown in JPS in-group comparisons (p<0;05).Conclusion: The result of the study suggested that unilateral exercise training should apply concomitant with visual feedback. Further studies are needed to compare the effect of different sensory feedbacks on unilateral exercise training.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has been demonstrated as effective for the treatment of low back pain (LBP) in workers. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether an exercise program adapted to the characteristics of the workplace is a useful supplement to general exercise recommendations in assembly line workers with chronic LBP. METHODS: Workers were randomly assigned to intervention group-adapted exercises plus general exercise recommendations (n = 10), and control group-general exercise recommendations (n = 8). Both received 8-week exercise program through a mobile application (APP) to manage the intervention. Outcome was based on lumbar disability (Oswestry Disability Index), interference and lumbar pain intensity (Brief Pain Inventory), and kinematic parameters. RESULTS: Significant differences were obtained for the intervention group in the “pain interference” variable, in the “mood” and “enjoyment” sub-variables, as well as in “flexion angle” variable. For the control group, significant differences occurred in the “pain intensity” variable. Adapted exercise plus general recommendations seems more effective than the general recommendations for the improvement of lumbar flexion. CONCLUSIONS: An adapted exercise program for assembly line workers with chronic LBP could be an effective treatment. Future studies with a larger sample size and with an exhaustive control of the exercise adherence are required to confirm the findings of this pilot study.

Introduction. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is an involuntary release of urine through the urethra during the increase of abdominal pressure in the absence of m. detrusor contraction. The exercise of pelvic floor muscles is recommended as the first line of cure. It is the least invasive and the only method without any undesirable side effects, which leads to either improvement or complete cure of SUI in 80-85% of cases. Objective. The aim of this study was to establish whether the strengthening of pelvic floor muscles using proprioceptive neural facilitation (PNF) spiral dynamic technique was more efficient in comparison to classical Kegel exercise. Methods. The research was carried out at the Centre for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Clinical Centre Kragujevac. Sixty-six female patients with the symptoms of SUI were monitored in the period of two years. Thirty-four patients did pelvic floor muscle exercises twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, with 15-20 contractions. Thirty-two patients used PNF spiral dynamic technique for strengthening pelvic floor muscles. The patients who used the spiral dynamic technique also did some exercises from the program; they exercised twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, following the prescribed schedule. Treatment outcome was assessed by measuring the pelvic floor muscles by a vaginal dynamometer. Results. The values of the pelvic floor muscle force that were measured using the vaginal dynamometer in both examined groups (PNF spiral dynamic technique or Kegel exercise) were statistically significantly higher after the implemented exercise program (t-test; p=0.000). No statistically significant difference in pelvic floor muscle values was found between the patients who applied PNF spiral dynamic technique and those who did Kegel exercise either before or after the exercise (two-factor analysis of variance with repeated measurements, factor of exercise type; p=0.899). Conclusion. Strengthening of pelvic floor muscles by exercises results in a significant increase of pelvic floor muscle strength and reduction of SUI symptoms, regardless of the used exercise program, PNF spiral dynamic technique or Kegel exercise program.

Introduction: It is well documented that some forced exercises can have bad effects on the genital system. Melatonin is a potent antioxidant that is effective in reducing the physical stress. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the supportive effect of melatonin on the quality of spermatogenesis, including count, motility, morphology, viability, and apoptosis of sperm following a forced treadmill exercise. Materials and methods: A total of 40 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this experimental study. All rats were divided into five groups: control group, sham M group, melatonin (M) group, forced treadmill exercise group (Ft), and melatonin with forced treadmill exercise (MFt) group. The experimental group was trained to force treadmill stress for one hour of forced treadmill exercise daily, five days weekly for eight weeks. Then the sperm quality parameters were measured after dissection and removal of epididymis. Spermatogenesis and germ cell apoptosis were evaluated using Miller and Johnsen’s score and TUNEL staining separately. Results: Results showed the count, motility, morphology, and viability of sperm in forced treadmill-melatonin administrated group, significantly enhanced by melatonin treatment compared to the treadmill exercise group (p≤0.01). Also the number of apoptotic germ cells significantly decreased in treadmill exercised-melatonin administrated group compared to the treadmill exercised group. Conclusions: These results suggest that administration of melatonin can protect the testis against the detrimental effect of forced treadmill exercise in adult male rats.

IntroductionParkinson’s disease is a movement disorder that also manifests non-motor symptoms (NMS). Physical exercise is a prominent strategy that can have an impact on NMS; however, the evidence is limited. Our aim was to verify the effects of exercise on NMS, as assessed using general NMS scales.MethodsThis study is a systematic review and meta-analysis. Two searches were conducted on the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Science Direct and PEDro databases from September to December 2022. The PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies.ResultsTwenty-three studies were included. The interventions were classified as multimodal, aerobic, resistance, dance, conventional physical therapy and other types. Five studies had high risk of bias. Eight studies were included in the meta-analyses. According to the criteria, four studies compared exercise with non-exercise (n=159), two compared multimodal exercise with cognitive/leisure approaches (n=128), and two compared aerobic with conventional exercise (n=40). No statistical differences were observed between exercise and non-exercise (−0.26 (−0.58 to 0.05)) and between multimodal and cognitive approaches (0.21 (−0.14 to 0.55)). However, trends were observed in the direction of exercise and cognitive approaches. A significant difference was observed favouring aerobic over conventional exercise (−0.72 (−1.36 to −0.08)).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that exercise may have an effect on general NMS compared with non-exercise, although only a trend was observed. It was also observed for cognitive approaches over multimodal exercises. Aerobic exercise showed near-large effects compared with conventional exercise.

Abstract May secret uses of power by democratic states be a legitimate exercise of democratic authority? The concerns about and the conditions of the democratic authority of secret exercises of political power have hitherto been argued to reside in the substantial and procedural side-constraints on the exercise of political authority. This essay approaches the problem of secrecy in democratic governance from a new angle by linking the problem of secret uses of power to the formal features of political authority, namely, its content-independent character. The focus is thus not on how political authority ought to be exercised but, instead, on what political authority exercised by democratic states is. In this context, the essay revisits Dennis Thompson’s seminal defense of secrecy in democratic states.

This randomized controlled study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of an 8-week personalized multicomponent home-based rehabilitation (MHR) program by comparing it with a home exercise program after discharge. Forty patients (≥60 years old) who underwent hip surgery were randomly assigned to multicomponent home-based rehabilitation (MHR) and home exercise groups. The MHR program included strength, endurance, balance, and breathing exercises; modifications to the home environment; education on assistive device use; pressure ulcer care; nutrition management; and motivational counseling. The MHR group received 24 visits from rehabilitation staff for 8 weeks (3 times a week), while the home exercise group received home exercises focusing on strengthening described in the leaflet. The rehabilitation staff prescribed the intensity of exercise at the first visit, and the home exercise group exercised without supervision after that for 8 weeks. Both groups received a 10-min phone call once a week for overall counseling to ensure high adherence to home exercises. Among the 40 participants, 29 (72.5%) completed the trial. The primary outcomes were balance and mobility. Balance was assessed using the functional reach test (FRT), and the timed up-and-go test (TUG) was used to assess balance and mobility. Data were analyzed using the intention-to-treat principle. The MHR group showed significant improvement compared to the home exercise group for FRT (mean difference (MD) 4.4 cm; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.0 to 7.8) and TUG (MD: −4.2 s; 95% CI −8.0 to −0.3) after 8 weeks of intervention. Subjective pain and physical components of general health-related quality of life also improved significantly in the MHR group. No serious adverse events related to the interventions were observed. The eight-week of MHR program can effectively improve balance and mobility.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the impact of chair aerobic exercises and core strengthening exercises on primary dysmenorrhea, assessing pain and disability scores using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and Women's Low Back Pain and Disability Index (WaLLID). The effectiveness of these exercise interventions in reducing pain and disability associated with primary dysmenorrhea was examined. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with participants diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhea. Two exercise groups were formed: chair aerobic exercises and core strengthening exercises. Pain and disability scores were measured using NPRS and WaLLID before and after the intervention. The exercises were performed for a specific duration, and the scores were compared within and between the exercise groups. Results: Both chair aerobic exercises and core strengthening exercises significantly decreased pain and disability scores of NPRS and WaLLID. However, no significant difference was observed in the scores between the two exercise groups. These findings indicate that both exercise modalities are effective in reducing pain and disability associated with primary dysmenorrhea. Conclusion: This study concludes that chair aerobic exercises and core strengthening exercises are effective in managing pain and disability in individuals with primary dysmenorrhea. Both exercise interventions offer comparable benefits in terms of pain management and functional improvement. The results support previous research highlighting the positive impact of exercise interventions on menstrual pain management. Chair aerobic exercises provide a suitable option for individuals with limited mobility or a preference for seated exercise, while core strengthening exercises focus on enhancing core strength and stability. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects, optimal exercise protocols, and potential combinations with other treatment modalities for primary dysmenorrhea management. Understanding the underlying physiological mechanisms of these exercise interventions would provide valuable insights for improving dysmenorrhea management. Introduction/Objective. The frequency of a sedentary lifestyle during pregnancy increases. This contributes to gestational weight gain and has a negative impact on health. This study researched the impact of prenatal exercise on gestational weight gain, blood pressure, and microcirculation in pregnant women who exercised and those who did not exercise. Methods. The study included seventy pregnant women with a normal pregnancy, who attended a psychophysical preparation program for childbirth for eight weeks. The control group (n=35) attended theoretical classes on childbirth, and the experimental group (n=35) attended prenatal exercises as well. Gestational weight gain, blood pressure, and nailfold capillary density were determined and compared between the two groups. Results. Gestational weight gain of 19.94 kg in non-exercising pregnant women was significantly greater than the gestational weight gain of 11.65 kg in pregnant women who exercised. Pregnant women who did not exercise had an increase in systolic (by 15.56 mmHg) and diastolic pressure (by 16.08 mmHg), which is significantly higher compared to pregnant women who exercised. In this group, systolic pressure increased by 2.5 mmHg, while diastolic did not change. A significant difference in the nailfold capillary density at the end of the prenatal program has not been determined. Conclusion. Prenatal exercise of moderate-intensity has a positive effect on gestational weight gain and the level of blood pressure in pregnant women. The nailfold capillary density has not differed significantly after the prenatal program in pregnant women who have exercised and in those who have not.

The article describes sports gymnastics as a leading means of physical education of student youth, which includes many different exercises, each of which consists of hundreds of movements in form and content. Modern sports gymnastics includes exercises with a complex coordination structure of movements, the athlete has to repeat the exercises many times, perform them intensively, often in conditions of fear of performing a complex exercise, which leads to various negative consequences in the conditions of educational and training classes. It is noted that the teaching of gymnastic exercises is based on the practical use of content and operational knowledge, on general didactic principles of the formation of movement skills and abilities. The special abilities that students should have in the process of learning gymnastic exercises are substantiated: coordination of movements, muscle strength, flexibility, speed of motor actions, speed and strength endurance, orientation in space, attention, memory of movements, emotional stability, determination and courage. The stages of the process of learning gymnastic exercises are highlighted: the formation of ideas about the exercise; unlearning the initial exercise to the level of motor skills; consolidating and improving a previously learned exercise to the level of a motor skill.

Exercise plays an important role in rehabilitating people with chronic low back pain. Aerobic exercise and resistance training are general exercise strategies to manage chronic low back pain, but these strategies require longer intervention period to achieve clinical outcomes in pain reduction and functional improvements. Directional preference is recognised as an important exercise strategy in managing low back pain. The Clinical Pilates exercise method leverages on the directional preference of an individual to achieve clinical outcomes faster. Clinical Pilates is a hybrid of two of the best exercise interventions for low back pain, which are general Pilates and the McKenzie method. Due to the scarcity of Clinical Pilates literature, a review of its theory and studies was undertaken to provide a structured guide to the technique in managing people with chronic low back pain. Hypothetical algorithms are developed to support translation into clinical practice and future research studies. These algorithms are useful in the management of complex cases involving multiple directional trauma. Although limited, current evidence suggests that the Clinical Pilates exercise method is safe and provides faster functional recovery in the early stage of rehabilitation and similar longer term outcomes as general exercises.

Introduction: There is a positive association between exercise and improved mental health in the general population. Although there is a greater burden of psychological distress among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people, little is known about the association between exercise and mental health in this population. The authors explored the association between exercise and poor mental health reported by LGB adults in the United States. Methods: Our analyses used data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine the association between exercising and mental health days adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Data were available for 6371 LGB participants. LGB adults who participated in any exercise reported almost 1.0 day less of poor mental health in the past 30 days compared with LGB adults who did not exercise (P ≤ .01). LGB adults who met one or both of the physical activity guidelines had between 1.2 and 1.7 days less of poor mental health compared with those who did not meet the guidelines (P ≤ .01). Conclusion: Fewer days of poor mental health were reported by LGB adults who exercised. Determining whether physical activity interventions, including aerobic and strengthening exercises, could improve mental health outcomes in LGB adults should be studied.

Exhaustive exercises can cause delayed menarche or menstrual cycle irregularities in females. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) are incorporated into a wide range of benefits in many physiological systems. Our work aimed to assess the role of ω-3 PUFA docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on the deleterious effects of exhaustive exercise on the female reproductive system in rats. Virgin female rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (12 rats in each): control group, omega-3 group treated with DHA, exhaustive exercise group, and exhaustive exercised rats treated with DHA. Omega-3 was given orally to the rats once daily for 4 estrous cycles. Exhaustive exercises revealed lower levels in progesterone and gonadotropins together with histopathological decrease in number of growing follicles and corpora lutea. Moreover, the exercised rats showed low levels of ovarian antioxidants with high level of caspase-3 and plasma cortisol level that lead to disruption of hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis. ω-3 PUFA DHA has beneficial effects on the number of newly growing follicles in both sedentary and exercised rats with decreasing the level of caspase-3 and increasing the antioxidant activity in ovaries. Exhaustive exercises can cause ovulatory problems in female rats that can be improved by ω-3 supplementation.

Reference: Wang XQ, Zheng JJ, Yu ZW, et al. A meta-analysis of core stability exercise versus general exercise for chronic low back pain. PLoS One. 2012;7(12):e52082. Clinical Questions: Is core stability exercise more effective than general exercise in the treatment of patients with nonspecific low back pain (LBP)? Data Sources: The authors searched the following databases: China Biological Medicine disc, Cochrane Library, Embase, and PubMed from 1970 through 2011. The key medical subject headings searched were chronic pain, exercise, LBP, lumbosacral region, and sciatica. Study Selection: Randomized controlled trials comparing core stability exercise with general exercise in the treatment of chronic LBP were investigated. Participants were male and female adults with LBP for at least 3 months that was not caused by a specific known condition. A control group receiving general exercise and an experimental group receiving core stability exercise were required for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Core stability was defined as the ability to ensure a stable neutral spine position, but the type of exercise was not specified. Outcome measures of pain intensity, back-specific functional status, quality of life, and work absenteeism were recorded at 3-, 6-, and 12-month intervals. Data Extraction: The study design, participant information, description of interventions in the control and experimental groups, outcome measures, and follow-up period were extracted. The mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to evaluate statistical significance. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Recommendations, and all articles were rated as high risk for other bias with no further explanation given. Main Results: Five studies involving 414 patients were included. Four studies assessed pain intensity using the visual analog scale or numeric rating scale. In the core stability exercise group, the reduction in pain was significant at 3 months (MD = −1.29, 95% CI = −2.47, −0.11; P = .003) but not at 6 months (MD = −0.50, 95% CI = −1.36, 0.35; P = .26). Functional status was improved at 3 months (MD = −7.14, 95% CI = −11.64, −2.65; P = .002) but not at 6 months (MD = −0.50, 95% CI = 0.36, 0.35; P = .26) or 12 months (MD = −0.32, 95% CI = −0.87, 0.23; P = .25). All of the included studies assessed back-specific functional status: 4 used the Oswestry Disability Index and 1 used the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire. Patients in the core stability exercise groups experienced improved functional status versus the general exercise group at 3 months (MD = −7.14, 95% CI = −11.64, −2.65; P = .002); no results were recorded at 6 or 12 months. Conclusions: In the short term, core stability exercise was more effective than general exercise for decreasing pain and increasing back-specific functional status in patients with LBP.

Two exercises demonstrate the potential influence of two Adlerian principles—earliest recollections and birth order—on personality. In one exercise, students record and study their earliest recollection. In another exercise, students discuss their position in their family constellation. Students rated both exercises highly; undergraduates valued the birth order exercise more, but graduate students valued the earliest recollections exercise more.

Background: Home-based rehabilitation exercise following Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) shows similar outcomes compared to supervised outpatient rehabilitation exercise. Little is known about patients' experiences with home-based rehabilitation, and this study aimed to investigate patient-perceived facilitators and barriers to home-based rehabilitation exercise and general physical activity after THA. Methods: Semi-structured interviews of qualitative design were conducted with 22 patients who had undergone THA and who had performed home-based rehabilitation exercise. The study took place in a regional hospital in Denmark between January 2018 and May 2019. Data was analyzed using an interpretive thematic analysis approach, with theoretical underpinning from the concept ‘conduct of everyday life’. The study is embedded within the Pragmatic Home-Based Exercise Therapy after Total Hip Arthroplasty-Silkeborg trial (PHETHAS-1), which aims to quantitatively investigate recovery outcomes after a home-based rehabilitation exercise program. Results: The main theme, ‘wishing to return to the well-known everyday life’, and the subtheme ‘general physical activity versus rehabilitation exercise’ were identified. Generally, participants found the home-based rehabilitation exercise boring but were motivated by the goal of returning to their habitual conduct of everyday life and performing their usual general physical activities. Conclusions: The overall goal for the THA patients was to return to their habitual everyday life. This goal served as a facilitator for undertaking home-based rehabilitation exercise. Being able to perform usual activities paradoxically became a barrier for some participants, as they were more motivated to engage in general physical activity than the rehabilitation exercise.

ObjectivesCurrent evidence on the clinical effectiveness about the different types of exercises in the subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) remains controversial. This study aims to compare the short-term (at 5 weeks) effects of a specific exercise programme with a general exercise programme on shoulder function in adults with SIS.MethodsIn total, 52 adults with SIS were randomly allocated to 5 weeks to perform specific exercises (experimental group, n=26) or general exercises (control group, n=26). The primary outcome was change in shoulder function, it was assessed using the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) from baseline to 5 weeks. Secondary end points included changes in upper limb function (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) Questionnaire), pain intensity (Visual Analog Scale (VAS)) and kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK)).ResultsAll participants completed the trial. The between-group differences at 5 weeks were: SPADI, 13.5 points (95% CI: 4.3 to 15.6; ƞ2=0.22; p=0.001); DASH, 10.1 points (95% CI: 5.6 to 15.2; ƞ2=0.27; p<0.001); VAS at rest, 0.2 cm (95% CI: 0.1 to 0.3; ƞ2=0.07; p=0.553); VAS on movement, 1.7 cm (95% CI: 0.9 to 2.2; ƞ2=0.24; p<0.001); and TSK, 16.3 points (95% CI: 13.2 to 15.3; ƞ2=0.33; p<0.001). All differences favoured the experimental group and effect sizes were medium to large for most outcomes. Mediation analyses showed that the effect of the specific exercises on shoulder function was mediated by kinesiophobia (β=2.800; 95% CI: 1.063 to 4.907) and pain on movement (β= −0.690; 95% CI: −1.176 to −0.271).ConclusionIn adults with SIS, specific exercises may have a larger effect than general exercises. However, most differences did not reach the minimum threshold to be considered clinically important and the evidence to support exercise as standard treatment warrant further study.Trial registration numberBrazilian Registry of Clinical Trials UTN number U111-1245-7878. This study aimed to analyze the effect of core stabilization exercise compared to general exercise for non-specific low back pain among athletes. There were 16 athletes with non-specific low back pain participated in this study. They were divided randomly into two groups after the screening process: core stabilization exercise group (CSG) and general exercise group (GEG). They were required to finish three sessions per week for six weeks. The pre-test and post-test were recorded using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (ODQ). The study revealed that the core stabilization exercise group is influential and has significant pain relief (p=0.000) and disability reduced (p=0.001) compared to the general exercise group after six weeks of intervention. This study demonstrated that core stabilization exercise is effective in reducing pain relief and reduce functional disability. Thus, prescribing core stabilization exercise may be beneficial to be used as therapeutic exercises for patients who suffer low back pain as it relieves pain and reduces functional disability.

AIMSː To investigate the effects of resistance exercise and fish oil intake on muscle morphology in Wistar rats. METHODSː Forty-eight animals that performed resistance exercise were initially divided into two groups. One group did not take fish oil and the other group took fish oil. The animals of the second group underwent training and took fish oil for eight weeks. At the end of the last resistance exercise session, the 48 rats were organized into six subgroups of eight each, according to the time gap (12, 24 or 48 hours) elapsed until the gastrocnemius muscle withdrawal procedure. At each established time after the last resistance exercise session, the gastrocnemius muscle was removed for morphological analysis.RESULTSː Skeletal muscle cells of the animals that did not receive fish oil presented higher scores of edema, especially those from the groups that had their muscles withdrawn at 24 and 48 hours of time gap. As for the group that took fish oil, we observed a smaller amount of inflammatory infiltrate and reduced areas of necrosis compared to animals that exercised without the use of fish oil, at all post-exercise time gaps. CONCLUSIONSː Fish oil intake attenuated morphological changes in muscle tissue after high-intensity exercises.

The article reveals the problems of training athletes- weightlifters. Regarding the mastering of the competitive jerk exercise. Exercises in kettlebell sports are divided into competitive exercises performed according to the specified requirements of the competition rules. Training exercises, which are divided into special preparatory and general preparatory. Since the jerk exercise is performed for 10 minutes (the exception is the Guard jerk or kettlebell marathon exercises). During the jerk exercise, the kettlebell changes several projections of body positions, moreover, these actions are constantly under the influence of weight (if during competitions it is 8 kg., 16 kg., 24 kg., or 32 kg.), and during training it is any - what weight according to the stage of training, sports qualification, article, etc. During the study, attention was paid to the four phases of jerk execution, namely: swing, lifting the weight to the squat, fixing and lowering the weight to the high position. All other phases, in our opinion, are auxiliary or complement the structure of the competitive exercise. According to the technical components, the movement abilities of the kettlebell are evaluated according to the following characteristics, namely spatio-temporal, dynamic and rhythmic, to the athlete's ability to maintain stability of orientation in space and voluntary muscle relaxation. The above-listed characteristics of the performed exercise can be attributed to the manifestation of the athlete's coordination abilities during the performance of a training or competitive exercise. With the correct setting of the technique in the performance of the exercise, it affects the effectiveness of the technical component of the exercise, which changes and complements the personal technique of the weightlifter and the economy of the athlete's energy expenditure. .In order to improve their own methodology in the training of weightlifting athletes, barbell and kettlebell exercises were included in the educational and training process. According to the form and structure, barbell exercises were divided into general/special preparatory exercises (65% + 35%), and kettlebell exercises (30% + 70%). The load of these exercises was calculated for each participant separately. Their personal indicators were taken into account: physical health, gender, physical development, which was reflected in the athlete's individual sports diary. The experimental study was conducted during the pre-diploma practice from September 5 to November 11, 2022 on the basis of the educational laboratory "Physical rehabilitation, occupational therapy and sports" of the Faculty of Social and Humanitarian Technologies and Management and the educational and sports complex of the State Tax University. 16 men aged 15-17 took part in the study, of which 4 were girls and 12 were boys. The participants of the experiment were divided into weight categories: men up to 65 kg, 70 kg, 75 kg, 80 kg. and over 80 kg. Girls have the following weight categories up to 60 kg, 65 kg. and over 65 kg. The work uses methods of analysis and generalization of scientific literature and a comparative analysis of the control exercise of jerks during one mesacycle, 4 planned control starts were carried out (09.07.2022 / 09.25.2022 / 10.20.2022 / 11.9.2022). And to control the strength of the shoulder girdle and arms, we offer the "Lifting a kettlebell" test, that is, a jerk weighing 24 kg for men and 8 kg for girls.

In the article "Relevance of implementation of the program "Remedial physical education for children of primary school age with functional postural disorders in the conditions of general educational institutions" the priority of corrective classes in schools for children with postural disorders was researched, revealed and updated. Therapeutic physical education is not only a medical discipline that uses physical education for the purpose of treatment and rehabilitation of students, as well as disease prevention. To increase the effectiveness of exercises, the task of exercise therapy includes the use of pedagogical means of influence: developing confidence in one's abilities, a conscious attitude to classes and the need to actively participate in them. The form of therapeutic physical culture is the organizational form in which the means of therapeutic physical culture are used and the methods of exercise therapy are carried out. The methods of physical therapy are actually the tasks of physical therapy. The name of the exercise therapy method indicates the disease or pathological condition in which this method is used. Means of exercise therapy are active therapeutic factors, such as gymnastic exercises, physical exercises in water, walking, classes on simulators, etc. The article also examines the theoretical issues of training physical education teachers for the implementation of the program "Remedial physical education for children of primary school age with functional postural disorders in the conditions of general educational institutions", reveals the age-related anatomical and physiological features of the development of younger schoolchildren, the main causes of functional postural disorders in younger students schoolchildren in the conditions of general educational institutions and at home, the tasks of the program, the prospects for the formation of knowledge, abilities, skills and competences in the process of studying the program are described. Key words: therapeutic physical education, primary school age, functional postural disorders, round back, lateral curvature of the spine, general educational institutions, therapeutic physical education lesson, lesson structure.

Exercise is believed to cause changes in population and/or activity of immunocompetent cells. Study of this relationship is difficult in humans because of the multifactorial nature of human physiology and concomitant problems in controlling extraneous variables. We have investigated the effects of 4 weeks of moderate exercise training on percentage of NK cells and Lymphocyte activity in Wistar male rats under tightly controlled laboratory conditions. The animals were randomized into two groups: exercise and control. Exercised rats ran at a treadmill speed of 20 m/min (moderate exercise intensity), for 20 minutes, 6 days/week. Laboratory and handling conditions were matched, and food was controlled for both groups. Twenty-four hours after the exercise training program, lymphocyte response did not change significantly (p0.05). Exercised rats demonstrated a significant increase in the percentage of circulating NK cell population (p0.05). Exercise training demonstrated a significantly lower body weight for the exercised rats (p0.05). With this simple model, this study supports the concept that regular moderate exercise leads to beneficial changes in the immunological response that may prevent cancer.

This article explores the extent of the review exercised by the General Court of the European Union in the field of competition litigation and underlines its intensification in three directions: the assessment of the legality of the Commission’s decisions, the exercise of its unlimited jurisdiction in relation to fines and penalty payments, as well as the control of the Commission’s use of its investigatory powers. It is also observed that this more in-depth review takes place in the context of a drop in the number of applications for annulment lodged before the General Court in competition cases, due notably to the success of the commitments procedure introduced by Article 9 of Regulation 1/2003 as well as the limitations set by the case law of the Court of Justice on the review the General Court may exercise over the decisions resulting from this procedure.

With the continuous progress of society and increment of social pressure, people have paid little and little attentions to physical exercises and dietary necessity. Taking Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shijiazhuang and Baotou university students as research objects, targeted at physical exercises time and dietary habits, it starts investigation. Making principal component analysis of investigation results, it indicates that cereal intake is principal component in dietary habits; strenuous exercise time and general physical exercise time are the principal components in physical exercise. Utilizing BP neural network model, and analyzing these seven cities’ physical exercises and dietary habits conditions, the result indicates that except for Shenzhen, all the other six cities haven’t reached the standard.
