Launched in 2007, the European Research Council (ERC) aims at pulling out all the stops in supporting ambitious research projects in frontier research by the most talented scientists and scholars. The ERC grants are generous, open to nationals from any country in the world, and subject to one criterion alone: peer-reviewed excellence. We outline the central strategic priorities of the ERC, and briefly describe some impressions from the first two calls.

AbstractEuropean Research Council Executive Agency, (ERCEA), has the mission to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all field, on the basis of scientific excellence. In 2019, European Research Council (ERC) updates the Panel Structure in 3 areas: Social Sciences and Humanities SH, Physical Sciences and Engineering PE, Life Sciences LS, 25 panels and 333 sub-panels. Every UE countries are updating own academic body system to align to the ERC. In Italy, this alignment is not possible because Movement and sport science has been together place SH and LS as academic disciplines of Physical training and Sport sciences. This is the vexata quaestio that makes the Italian academic system different from the other EU countries with consequences on the development of Italian research in Europa. Historical review explains why this division exists and why it begun after the second great war and developed to nowadays, determining an atypical model than others European countries. Movement and sport science should to be reasonably placed in an unique scientific area or alignments coherently at the related subpanels according to the scientific evidences, even if they are placed in more ERC areas. Both options can be applied according to ERC thought to resolve the actual problem.

Abstract European Research Council Grants (ERC) have become the most important vehicle for funding scientific research in the EU. Since their creation in 2007, they have provided funding for around 7,000 of the nearly 70,000 proposals for research projects submitted. With a success rate of about 11%, these Grants are highly competitive. Despite major advancement of women’s participation in research activity, women overall remain the minority in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM disciplines). Against that backdrop, this article analyses men’s and women’s presence in ERC Grants. The gender balance in the ERC Grant, have been examined in three dimensions: Excellence Awarded; Scientific Leadership Position; and Time Series Evolution. The results show that female presence is lower than men as submitted (26% vs 74%), granted (22% vs 78%), expert panel members (28% vs 72%), and as a panel chair (26% vs 74%). State-space prediction of the future pattern of these grants shows that time has no clearly beneficial effect on women’s participation as applicants, granted, expert panel members or panel chairs, particularly in the area of Physics and Engineering.

Agencies have become a ubiquitous part of the administrative structure of the EU. They fulfil diverse and important roles in implementing EU policies. As diverse as the tasks of EU agencies are their forms of organization. Few have been established by the Treaties themselves; most have been created on the basis of secondary legal acts. Agency design has, thus, become an important part of EU legislative activity. The future of agencies is, however, very much subject to debate. This article does not analyse agencies in the EU context from an abstract point of view. Instead, it studies possible structural and procedural arrangements for agencies on the basis of a real-life case study, the European Research Council (ERC), chosen from the area of the EU's research policy. The ERC displays not only a rather unusual structure with creative institutional design. It also stands as an example for many controversies about independence and accountability of agencies in the EU. This short article, after introducing the ERC and before looking at the various options for agency design in the EU in general terms, looks at the options for changing the ERC's legal status and architecture. This is used as a canvas to outline some thoughts on the role and independence of agencies in the EU.

The European Research Council has provided substantial research grants across all disciplines during the period 2007–2013. An analysis of the distribution of the ERC (IDEAS) Starting, Consolidator and Advanced grants shows substantial differences by country. On the one hand, the UK excels in the relative number of awards, in its share among the top receiving institutions, in a high proportion of inwards mobile scholars and in the overall financial gain through ERC as compared with the UK’s contribution to the EU budget. In addition, the Netherlands is among the winners in these respects. On the other hand, Italy fares unfavourably according to these measures. In the search for an explanation of the Italian situation, a comparison is undertaken with other European countries of a similar size. The article arrives at the conclusion that low Italian success in efforts to raise such ERC funds is not due to the low average quality of the Italian education and research system, but rather due to low funding, e.g. to a low proportion of the GDP spent on research.

This article addresses European Research Council (ERC) grants in the Archaeology and History panel (SH6). The study was conducted by considering the first two cycles of ERC funding (2007-2020). We introduce to eligibility criteria and evaluation process involved in ERC calls. We show the results of the analysis in terms of most awarded ‘countries’ per call (Starting Grant, Consolidator Grant, Advanced Grant), the profiles of researchers and the main research subjects of 360 granted funding. The inquire is extended to a systematic analysis regarding the profile of scientific members of the commissions (480 scholars) employed to evaluate the proposals. The outcome is that Italian institutions underperforming compared to other major European countries; the success rate of ‘Italian’ proposals is lower than the European average; young Italian researchers very rarely obtain Starting Grants. This is, we believe, partly due to some policies currently still in place – even if no longer sustainable - in Italian universities. There is some correlation between most awarded institutions (by country) and most employed panelists. In the final part, we show the main trending topics of ERC projects.

Abstract. The European Research Council (ERC) marks a new approach to investing in frontier research in Europe. Since its establishment, the ERC has taken numerous actions to tackle imbalances and monitors data from each call. The aim of this paper is to review descriptive statistics of men and women participating in ERC calls in the geosciences. The share of women applying for Starting Grants is on average around 30 %, whereas for Consolidator Grants and Advanced Grants the share is around 25 % and 11 % respectively. Success rate analysis shows no significant gender disparities. The paper provides an overview of the ERC peer-review system, discusses results specific to the geosciences compared to national funding and SHE Figures, and concludes with a review of past actions and future goals.

Objective. The objective of the article is the analysis of the EU framework programs for the development of research and technology as the main financial tool of EU innovation policy. Methods. The following methods and techniques of cognition are used in the research process: theoretical generalization and comparison, analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, grouping. Results. According to the results of the study, it is substantiated that innovation has always been considered by the EU as a dominant determinant of socio-economic development and ensuring competitiveness. EU innovation policy has been closely linked to scientific, technical, industrial, environmental, regional and other EU policies. It is determined that the main goals of the EU innovation policy are: open innovation, open science and openness to the world. It is determined that since 1984 - until now: 8 framework programs have been implemented, the implementation of the 9th program is planned for 2021-2027; Framework programs are constantly evolving, which is reflected in the change: the duration of the framework programs, their objectives, thematic areas, horizontal activities, budget, etc. It is argued that the most ambitious of the EU Framework Programs is the 9th Framework Program, with a total budget of € 96899 million, divided between 4 horizontal programs (Widening Participation & Strengthening The European Research Area, Innovative Europe, Excellent Science, Global Challenges And European Industrial Competitiveness) and 15 components (Widening participation and spreading excellence, reforming and enhancing the European R&I System, European Innovation Council (EIC), European innovation ecosystems, European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), The European Research Council (ERC), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Research infrastructures, Health, Culture, creativity and inclusive society, Civil Security for Society, Digital, Industry and Space, Climate, Energy and Mobility, Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment, Non-nuclear direct actions of the Joint Research Centre (JRC)).

Anaphylaxis is an acute, potentially life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction. Early diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of anaphylaxis are essential to reduce its associated morbidity and mortality. The article analyzes the key components of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) 2021 guidelines for pediatric resuscitation in clinical practice and presents a clinical case of pediatric practice. The materials for the study were published information sources, in particular the recommendations of ERC (2021) for pediatric resuscitation in clinical practice and the publication of other scientific researches. Methods of systematic and structural-logical analysis, bibliosemantic method were used. Conducting training on the management of a child with anaphylaxis among medical personnel, parents, other persons who take care of the child involves the training of several team members who must act in parallel and in a coordinated manner. Information on modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of anaphylaxis in the recommendations of ERC (2021) on pediatric resuscitation in clinical practice was analyzed. Research of the long-term therapy of anaphylaxis, including methods of diagnosis and avoiding triggers, is promising; identification of cofactors; education of the patient, parents and persons who take care of the children, as well as measures aimed at reducing sensitivity to allergens. Many of the etiological and pathophysiological processes underlying anaphylaxis in children and infants differ from those in adults. Available evidences are often insufficient and/or extrapolated from the adult literature. Because anaphylaxis is less common in children, doctors, parents, and other caregivers may have limited experience. The ERC (2021) recommendations for pediatric resuscitation in clinical practice include training and application in practice.

The European Innovation Council (EIC) was launched in March 2021 and aims to help advance breakthrough innovations. To do so it has a funding budget of over €10 billion between 2021 and 2027. The EIC Board comprises entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, company representatives, along with other members of the innovation community, and is responsible for the EIC’s strategy, work programme and its implementation. Available funding is overseen by EIC Programme Managers who are experts in their field and aim to make innovations a reality by nurturing an environment where breakthroughs can truly blossom. The 2023 work programme includes three funding schemes; each designed to fit a particular project idea. Through the EIC Pathfinder scheme, €343 million is available to multifaceted research groups to facilitate innovative research. Candidates for this scheme are typically visionary scientists, entrepreneurial researchers, research performing organisations, start-ups, high-tech SMEs and groups and individuals with an interest in technology research and development. For research teams grants of up to €4 million are available to support technologies in the early stages of development. New technologies are supported and prepared for market by the EIC Transition scheme. Providing they can demonstrate that research results arising from Pathfinder and European Research Council Proof of Concept projects can be transformed into pioneering technologies and new businesses, applicants can access funding worth €128.3 million. If successful, applicants gain the opportunity to further develop their idea, produce a business plan and bring their innovation to market.

Some individual funding schemes aim at recognizing excellence of early and/or mid-career researchers, allowing them to boost their potential via munificent endowments, autonomy, and employment security. In Italy, this is the case of "Futuro in Ricerca" (FIRB), which is in many regards similar to the European Research Council (ERC) scheme. Both schemes are supposed to make excellence thrive, which is understood also in terms of publishing in leading journals and establishing international collaborations. The paper checks whether FIRB recipients are thereafter more performative in terms of quality of publication (ranking of target journals and international co-authorships), testing against a randomly extracted control group of Italian academics of similar age, rank and discipline. The study tests also against ERC recipients active in Italy. Results of difference-in-difference tests show that i) FIRB recipients improve their capacity to publish in highly ranked journals, similarly to what ERC recipients do; ii) these schemes do not incentivize international co-authorships; iii) FIRB is not conducive of notable changes within non-bibliometric disciplines.

When thinking about this contribution, an homage to John Ziman, one question occurred to me repeatedly: what would John have made of the European Research Council? Here is a newly established institution with the sole objective to fund ‘frontier research’ at EU level, based exclusively on scientific excellence and subject to pan-European competition of the best researchers. Would he have interpreted it as a vindication of academic science as a culture, a deliberate turning away from ‘post-academic science’ or even of overcoming it? Or, would he have seen it as the establishment of a small niche, to be recognized (and praised) for its respect for the norms of academic science, whose wider impact still has to be seen?

The term macromolecular crowding is used to describe equilibria and kinetics of biochemical reactions and biological processes that occur via mutual volume exclusion of macromolecules in a highly crowded structureless medium. In vivo, the extracellular space is heavily crowded by a diverse range of macromolecules and thus, biological processes occur rapidly, whilst in vitro, in the absence of macromolecules, the same processes occur very slowly, if they are initiated at all (1-3). This talk will discuss the concept of macromolecular crowding, alone or in combination with other in vitro microenvironment modulators, in tendon engineering context.Acknowledgements: This work has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, grant agreement No. 866126. A protocol for characterizing urban soundscapes for use in the design of Soundscape Indices (SSID) and general urban research as implemented under the European Research Council (ERC)-funded SSID project is described in detail. The protocol consists of two stages: (1) a Recording Stage to collect audio-visual recordings for further analysis and for use in laboratory experiments, and (2) a Questionnaire Stage to collect in situ soundscape assessments via a questionnaire method paired with acoustic data collection. Key adjustments and improvements to previous methodologies for soundscape characterization have been made to enable the collation of data gathered from research groups around the world. The data collected under this protocol will form a large-scale, international soundscape database.

Background and Objectives: Conducting advanced life support (ALS) according to the guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) requires medical personnel to implement the appropriate emergency actions. In particular, these actions include chest compressions, airway management, artificial ventilation, defibrillation and the administering of medicines. An appropriate training system enables members of medical response teams (MRT) to acquire the essential knowledge and skills necessary to correctly conduct cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). One way to improve the quality of interventions by MRT personnel is participation in emergency medicine championships. Materials and Methods: The research analysed assessment cards for tasks carried out during the International Winter Championships in Emergency Medicine in the years 2013–2020. The assessed tasks were prepared and led by European Resuscitation Council instructors of advanced life support. During ten-minute scenarios of simulated sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in adults, the judges assessed the compliance of procedures with current ERC guidelines. This research analysed the performance of 309 teams from Poland made up of paramedics from medical response units from all over the country. Results: In most cases, the study showed significant differences in the percentage of correctly performed procedures between years. Most often, the highest percentage of correctly performed procedures was recorded in 2019 and 2020. The lowest percentage of correctly performed procedures was most often recorded in 2013. In subsequent years, the percentage of use of tracheal intubation decreased (from 54.76% to 31.25%) in favour of an increase in the use of supraglottic airway device SAD (from 35.71% to 59.38%). Conclusions: The research has shown that in subsequent years of the Championships, the quality of the majority of assessed procedures carried out by members of MRT gradually improved. The research authors also observed that in subsequent years, the percentage of intubations decreased in favour of SAD.

Background: We assessed the ethics review of proposals selected for funding under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and the European Research Council (ERC) in Horizon 2020, EU’s framework programme for research and innovation, 2014-2020. Methods: We analysed anonymized datasets for 3,054 MSCA individual fellowships (IF), 417 MSCA Innovative Training Networks (ITN), and 1,465 ERC main-listed proposals with ethics conditional clearance, over four years (2016 to 2019). The datasets included the information on ethics issues identified by applicants in their proposal and ethics issues and requirements identified by ethics experts during the ethics review. Results: 42% of proposals received ethical clearance. For proposals with conditional ethics clearance (n=3546), most of the identified ethics issues by both applicants and ethics experts were in the ethics categories related to humans; protection of personal data; environment, health and safety; and non-EU countries. Ethics experts identified twice as many ethics issues compared to applicants across funding schemes, years, and from high- and low-research performing countries. ERC grants had the highest number of ethics requirements per proposal (median (Md)=8, interquartile range (IQR=4-14), compared to ITN (Md=6, IQR=3-13) and IF grants (Md=3, IQR=2-6). The majority of requirements had to be fulfilled after grant agreement: 99.4% for IF, 99.5% for ITN, and 26.0% for ERC. For 9% of the proposals, the requirements included the appointment of an independent ethics advisor and 1% of the proposals had to appoint an ethics advisory board. Conclusions: Many applicants for highly competitive H2020 funding schemes lack awareness of ethics issues raised by their proposed research. There is a need for better training of researchers at all career stages about ethics issues in research, more support to researchers from research organizations to follow the funding agencies requirements, as well as further development and harmonization of the ethics appraisal process during grant assessment.

Background and objective: The evaluation in basic life support (BLS) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training courses is mostly formative. The objective of the study was to evaluate a quantitative assessment with an established cut-off level of 7 out of 10.Methods: The course was designed in accordance with the European Resuscitation Council (ERC). For the evaluation a high-fidelity manikin was available (Laerdal® Resusci Anne QCPR). A multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) was used to test knowledge, and the practical skills with a high-fidelity manikin. Results: About 68.2% and 34.1% obtained a score greater than 7 in knowledge and skills as evaluated by the nurse educator, immediately after the training. When the skills illustrated by the manikin were included, the results fell to 11.4% and 2.3%, respectively. Conclusions: A summative assessment of theoretical and practical competencies with a cut-off level of 7 demonstrates that global competency in BLS-AED is not achieved and some other strategies should be introduced in the current courses.

Brain infection by SARS-CoV-2: Lifelong consequences The WATCH team, founded to elucidate the role played by specialized brain cells called tanycytes in various physiological processes, has been investigating how and where the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects the brain, and some long-term consequences of this neuro-invasion. The European Research Council (ERC) Synergy project WATCH (Well-Aging and the Tanycytic Control of Health) brings together the teams of three principal investigators: Vincent Prevot, a neuroendocrinologist working for the French National Health Research Institute (INSERM) in Lille, France; Markus Schwaninger, a neurologist at the University of Lübeck, Germany; and Ruben Nogueiras, an expert in molecular metabolism at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Together, they are researching how tanycytes – highly specialized cells residing in a tiny part of the brain called the hypothalamus – regulate various physiological processes.

In the original proposal entitled Reconstructing Ancient Israel – The Exact and Life Sciences Perspective, two of us (Israel Finkelstein and Steve Weiner) wrote, “If the microscopic data are well integrated into the macroscopic (archaeological) record, they will undoubtedly provide new insights into the study of Ancient Israel.” And this was what this 5-year (2009–2014) European Research Council (ERC) sponsored program (details below) was all about. New ground was broken on three fronts: conceptual, methodological, and in the generation of new data that indeed provide novel insights into the history and material culture of Ancient Israel in particular and the Iron Age Levant in general. The reviews presented in this special volume synthesize some of these new insights. The findings have been published in about 70 papers (see Appendix).

Introduction and objective: Epinephrine is the most important and primary drug that resuscitation team use to reverse cardiac arrest. The provision of epinephrine is currently suggested by both the American Heart Association and the European Resuscitation Council. It is vital to improving the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), however the evidence for the use of adrenaline in resuscitation is inconclusive. Materials and methods: The literature was reviewed in the Pubmed database, in the Via Medica Journals database, and in the guidelines of the Polish Society of Anesthesiology, European Resuscitation Council and the American Heart Association with the use of keywords. State of knowledge: There is a clear evidence of an association between epinephrine and increased return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Its action is based on stimulation of alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. Epinephrine have a role in resuscitation, during CPR it increases the probability of restoring cardiac activity with pulses, which is intermediate step toward long-term survival. However, there are conflicting results regarding long-term survival and functional recovery, particularly neurological outcome. Conclusions: Research shows that epinephrine administration in patients with cardiac arrest increases the chance of restoring spontaneous circulation and patient survival to hospital admission and discharge. However, there are arguments questioning the validity of using epinephrine in resuscitation. Publications show that the compound contributes to post-resuscitation syndrome, which reduces a patient's chance of long-term survival. There are a number of conflicting studies that vary widely in the results presented. The current evidence is insufficient to either confirm or exclude the efficacy of epinephrine, which is why it is still recommended in the latest resuscitation guidelines by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC 2021) and the American Heart Association (AHA 2020).

BackgroundAdequate ventilation is an important aspect of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Research suggests 80% of caregivers hyperventilate during CPR and that feedback improves compliance with ventilation guidelines. Hyperventilation is associated with increased intrathoracic pressure, impaired haemodynamics and cerebral vasoconstriction and therefore can be deleterious to survival. VANZ aimed to determine if compliance with European Resuscitation Council (ERC) ventilation guidelines could be improved using a real time ventilation feedback deviceMethodsParticipants simulated a two-minute cardiac arrest scenario using a manikin and defibrillator without ventilation feedback. Researchers demonstrated the ventilation feedback device and participants practiced using it. The two-minute scenario was then repeated with ventilation feedback. The ventilation rate, volume and CPR quality were recorded during each scenario. The primary outcome was based on achieving ≥50% compliance with ERC ventilation guidelines of ventilating at 8-12 breaths per minute and 500-600ml per breath. Following the study participants were asked to complete a short survey on the ventilation feedback deviceResultsDuring September 2020 106 participants (58% male, mean age 42, 74% paramedics) completed the study. The primary outcome showed a significant improvement from 9% of participants achieving ≥50% compliance without feedback to 91% of participants achieving ≥50% compliance with feedback (McNemars test p<0.0001). Survey data from participants was overwhelmingly positive about the ventilation feedback device.ConclusionsUse of real time ventilation feedback during CPR significantly improved participants ability to deliver ventilations compliant with ERC guidelines in a simulated scenario. The fact that this was a manikin study is a limitation but the low rate of compliance with ventilation guidelines without feedback raises questions about ventilation quality when CPR is performed on patients. Future research should examine the quality of ventilations performed on patients, the ability of feedback to improve compliance with guidelines and the impact this has on patient outcomes.

In the past decade, the number of EU policy activities in research and higher education has increased greatly. The governance processes in these areas are increasingly characterized as multilayered, involving actors with a variety of roles, functions and loyalties. This article focuses on the forces shaping the policy positions and strategies of national science policy actors and coalitions in transnational policy processes through a case study of the positions, ideas and strategies held by central Swedish science policy actors in the process of building the European Research Council (ERC) during the first decade of the 2000s. The case is analysed from the perspectives of three versions of neo-institutional theory, each of which has somewhat different views on how institutions, interests and policy ideas interact in these kind of processes. The analysis shows that the Swedish influence on this process consisted primarily of an advocacy coalition of individuals with strong institutional positions in the Swedish science policy system and affiliations to transnational policy institutions and communities. Furthermore, the study shows that the policy actors largely functioned as normative entrepreneurs who related to general policy ideas shared by members of a transnational community, but also that the drivers of the development and the policy solutions were largely anchored in experiences and legacies from a national context.

The article deals with the comparative legal research of the current labour legislation of each of the 28 EU member states with the Directive 2019/1152 of 20 June 2019 on transparent and predictable working conditions in the European Union. The relevance of the research topic is because after the adoption of Council Directive 91/533/EEC in the EU, a number of acts of primary and secondary legislation were adopted that significantly change the content and scope of labour rights of workers. These are, in particular, The Maastricht Treaty, The Treaty of Amsterdam, The Treaty of Nice and the Treaty of Lisbon. Furthermore, on December 7, 2000, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union was signed, and on December 17, 2017, The European Parliament, the Council and the Commission solemnly proclaimed the European Pillar of Social Rights. As a result, collisions arose between the above Acts and Directive 91/533/EEC, which required the adoption of a new Directive 2019/1152 and a comparative legal analysis of this Directive with the current labour legislation of each of the 28 EU member states.

This paper aims to investigate frequency and distribution patterns of stance and engagement markers across different science fields in European Research Council funded project proposal abstracts. Three science fields analysed using corpus-based quantitative and qualitative methodology are life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities. A corpus consisting of 90 project proposal abstracts was compiled and each text was examined for stance and engagement markers following Hyland’s (2005b) framework of stance and engagement. The results show that stance markers were used much more frequently than engagement markers in all science fields analysed. However, it was found that compared to writers in social sciences and humanities, authors of life sciences and physical sciences and engineering abstracts tended to use more stance markers which may suggest a greater importance placed on creating a stronger authorial persona. In social sciences and humanities abstracts, on the other hand, engagement markers were more frequent than in the other two fields, which may imply that their texts are slightly more reader focused. The results of the study shed light on competitive funding discourse which is still scarcely researched, as well as reveal strategies and techniques used to create effective scientific discourse.

Extensive thermodynamic calculations exploring the large composition space of the Cr-Fe-Co-Ni-Mo system were performed in order to design new multi-principal element single-phase fcc alloys with enhanced passivity and resistance to localised corrosion. This presentation will cover several aspects from design to production, passivation, surface analysis and pitting resistance of alloys with up to 15 at.% Mo . The newly designed and produced quinary alloys, Cr25Fe25Co5Ni40Mo5 and Cr15Fe10Co5Ni60Mo10 (at.%) show superior resistance to localised corrosion in chloride solution. The chemical states, composition and stratification of passive films were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The resistance to pitting was measured after pre-passivation of the alloy surfaces in Cl--free acidic solution. Stratification of the passive films was observed, with Cr, Fe, Ni,Mo oxides and hydroxides in the outer layer and Cr oxide in the inner layer. The amounts and distribution of chloride ions that penetrated into the passive films were also investigated. In-depth profiles show that, on the Mo-bearing alloys, chloride ions do not penetrate the Mo-enriched outer layer of the oxide film. A direct link between the structural and chemical nature of passive films and the resistance to pitting in chloride solution was observed. This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (advanced grant agreement # 741123)

The article uses the constructivist securitization concept to analyze the European Economic Community (EEC), and the European Union (EU) approaches to ensuring energy security. It seeks to establish whether the energy supply has been securitized within the European integration process and if so when it happened. The literature review does not give a definitive and comprehensive answer to this question which is essential for all the history of the EEC and the EU. The authors of this study use an extensive documentary database available on the EU websites. They established that for the EEC/EU the energy policy securitization is a long-lasting ongoing process that came into being in 1973. Within the European integration, the securitization is justified by the dependency of the member states on the imported energy resources, which is regarded through the prism of securing reliable, affordable, and (since 2000s) environmentally sustainable supply. The authors identified two waves of energy supply securitization in the EEC/EU. The first wave was triggered by the oil embargo of the OPEC Arab countries and, generally, the world oil crisis of 1973-1974. The second wave of the 2000s and 2010s was triggered by the Russian-Ukrainian gas conflicts of 2006 and 2009 and the sharp deterioration of Russian-Ukrainian relations in 2014. For both waves, the Commission was the main ‘securitizing actor’. However, during the second wave, the European Parliament, some EU countries, and even the United States made their own ‘securitizing moves’. The ‘audience’ (EEC/EU countries) expressed its opinion towards the ‘securitizing moves’ through the European Council and the Council decisions. The research conclusions can be useful for a profound scientific explanation of the EU energy policy as well as for the operationalization of the securitization concept.

Worldwide, whales have been hunted to the brink of extinction. In Brazil, whaling was a royal monopoly between 1614 and 1801. Within the dynamics of the Portuguese Empire, it was a stimulus that promoted wealth and the circulation of knowledge, practices, and products. The development of whaling stations in four coastal sites fostered the construction of littoral spaces, shaped the ways people perceived and used the ocean and marine animals, and left an impact on whale populations in a truly entangled history between humans and the non-human world. In this article, we aim to identify the main target species and number of animals caught through the analysis of historical sources from the 17th and 18th centuries. Southern Right Whale and Humpback Whale were the main target species, to a different extent, between the north-eastern and south-eastern whaling sites, but occasionally hunted simultaneously. We accounted for a total of 9080 animals captured in 41 years, between 1627 and 1801, and addressed hunting loss and calf-securing practices. In discussing biodiversity loss in the era of the Anthropocene, we expect to contribute to a better understanding of early impacts on marine life in the 1600-1800 period. Objective: To study and relate the level of knowledge and attitude regarding CPR in medical faculty of Karachi. Research Design: This was an observational, cross-sectional survey based study. Duration: December, 2020 to January, 2021. Methodology: This study was conducted in various private and public sector hospitals and private rehabilitation centers in Karachi. This was an observational, cross-sectional, survey based study designed to assess CPR knowledge. Data was collected using a self–structured questionnaire comprising of thirty one close-ended questionnaire having 3parts: Q.1-7 Demographics; Q.8-20 CPR Practices and Q.21-31 Knowledge of CPR. Result: Total Sample of 126 individuals (n=126) was selected for the study. The analysis was done by using SPSS version 22. The P value (>0.05) indicates that the outcomes were insignificant indicating the knowledge of CPR in Karachi. Conclusion: The general awareness regarding CPR was good but first aid skills needs improvement. Professional training programs, hands-on workshops, should be conducted to enhance CPR skills, awareness and knowledge among medical faculty. Keywords: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), ventricular fibrillation (VF), AHA (American Heart Association), ERC (European Resuscitation Council)

Objective: This study evaluated self-trained basic life support (BLS) skills acquired from an e-learning platform to design a complementary in-class training approach. Design: In total, 41 students (15–17 years, 29 men) participated in a pilot study on self-training in BLS. After 6 weeks, a compression-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) test assessed the skills acquired. Setting: A practice-based research setting. All data were collected in Flemish secondary schools in the context of the regular school curriculum. Methods: All tests were video-recorded. Data on motor skills were additionally collected on a Resusci Anne mannequin with Skillreporting software®. Quantitative data were analysed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The qualitative aspects of basic life-saving actions were evaluated using European Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines. Results: Alerting emergency services, checking for consciousness and placing electrodes can be learned autonomously and be taught by means of pre-instruction. Hands-on training is necessary for compression skills and freeing the airway. Conclusion: Self-training in BLS offers insight into a flipped classroom CPR training strategy. Hands-on training should focus on motor skills, including head tilt and compression depth.

Aiming to provide an overview on the tourism policy implemented by the European Economic Community from the early 1960s until today, the research gives a contribution to fill a gap in current European Integration History, since Historians devoted little attention to the role of tourism in the integration process. To achieve this goal, the article addresses the mutual interactions between the making of Europe and the spread of mass tourism, by a focus on the role played from the Commission and the Council in the field of leisure travel. Broadly speaking, achievements and contradictions of the attempts to set a true tourism policy throughout the decades are investigated. From a methodological point of view, the research owes to the so-called “new history of European integration”, to the extent that multiple layers are taken into account, in order to assess the consequences of EEC tourism policy on society as a whole.
