The study of light-matter interactions has become increasingly important in recent years. This is mainly due to the growing need for innovative photoactive compounds in various scientific disciplines, which has led to a corresponding increase in the use of theoretical methods for the investigation of excited states. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to contribute to the development of novel computational tools allowing a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying photoinduced events. We focused on the ultrafast electron dynamics of excited states of charge transfer (CT) nature in molecules using Real Time - Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (RT-TDDFT). While TDDFT is widely used due to its good cost-accuracy ratio, it is generally recognized that CT states are indeed difficult to describe with this method due to the approximate nature of the functionals used to calculate the exchange and correlation energy contribution. In this work, we therefore demonstrate the relevance of density-based descriptors in the field of electron dynamics as tools to characterize the ultrafast density response and to assess the reliability of RT-TDDFT simulations in describing the dynamics of CT states

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been proposed as main carriers of diffuse interstellar bands that are observed in the interstellar medium. This has motivated an extensive study of their photophysical and photochemical response to UV irradiation. Underlying competing mechanisms drive the evolution of gas in the interstellar medium. The main objective of this thesis is to describe and to get theoretical insight in the energy relaxation mechanisms in large PAH molecules via extensive non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the linear response Time-Dependent Density Functional based Tight Binding (TD-DFTB) approach of the excited states. Prerequisite substantial development was made in the DFTB deMon-Nano package (http://demon-nano.ups-tlse.fr), firstly with the implementation of analytical gradients of potential energy surfaces (PESs) and of non-adiabatic couplings within the TD-DFTB scheme. Next, the Tully's fewest-switches trajectory surface hopping (FSSH) algorithm has been adapted and coupled to the TD-DFTB scheme in order to take into account non-adiabatic transitions. After detailed methodological considerations and comparison with higher-level electronic structure methods, the first full-scale application is dedicated to non-adiabatic molecular dynamics of linearly cata-condensed PAHs. Electronic relaxation from the brightest excited state has been simulated for neutral polyacenes with 2 to 7 aromatic cycles. The results display a striking alternation in decay times of the brightest singlet state computed for polyacenes with up to 6 aromatic cycles, which is correlated with a qualitatively similar alternation of energy gaps between the brightest state and the state lying just below in energy. Next, the influence of geometry on relaxation has been investigated through the comparison of two isomers: armchair-edge chrysene versus zigzag-edge tetracene. After assessing the performance of DFTB parameter sets, the main focus is given to the analysis of the electronic relaxation from the brightest excited state, which is located around 270 nm for both isomers. The results show that the electronic population of the brightest excited state in chrysene decays an order-of-magnitude faster than that in tetracene. This is correlated with a significant difference in energy gaps between the brightest state and the state lying just below in energy, which is consistent with the previous conclusions for polyacenes. A last major development concerns the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms that have been proposed as a way to avoid most of the computationally-demanding electronic structure calculations. It aims to assess the performance of neural networks algorithms applied to excited-state dynamics. Electronic relaxation in neutral phenanthrene has been chosen as a test case due to the diversity of available experimental results. Several neural networks have been trained with different parameters and their respective accuracy and efficiency analyzed. In addition, approximate trajectory surface hopping schemes have been interfaced to ML-based PESs and gradients, resulting in non-adiabatic dynamics simulations at a negligible cost. Various simplified hopping approaches have been compared with FSSH. Overall, ML is found to be a highly promising tool for nanosecond-long molecular dynamics in excited states. This PhD research opens new avenues to investigate theoretical photophysics of large molecular complexes. Last but not least, the theoretical tools developed and implemented in deMon-Nano in a modular way can be further combined with other advanced (such as Configuration Interaction) DFTB techniques better adapted to charge-transfer states

Protonated aromatic molecules play an important role in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions, fundamental reactions in organic chemistry and in various biological processes. The interstellar medium is another environment which is likely to contain the protonated aromatic molecules, that’s because these molecules are stable chemically since they are close shell electronic structure. These molecules were also identified in others environments such as combustion flames, plasmas of various hydrocarbons and the upper atmosphere of Titan. Protonated molecules are usually very sensitive to their local environment; a gas phase study is required to determine their intrinsic properties. Until now, very little is known about the isolated protonated molecules, only a few results are available in the literature. This lack of data is due to the difficulties of the production and the cooling of these molecules in gas phase. The technical progress we have done has enabled the study of protonated molecules in the gas phase at very low temperatures, using an ion sources, supersonic jet and the laser induced photofragmentation techniques. Using this technique, we have recorded many electronic spectra (S1←S0) of different protonated molecules. We can regroup the studied molecules into four: Linear protonated polycyclic aromatic molecules (benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, pentacene). Nonlinear protonated polycyclic aromatic molecules (fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene). Protonated molecules containing an hetero atom (benzaldehyde, salicylaldehyde, 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, indole, aniline). Protonated cluster (dimer of benzene, naphthalene (H2O)n, n = 1,2,3. Naphthalene (NH3)n, n = 1,2,3, benzaldehyde (Ar, N2)). Most of those spectra are red-shifted compare to the spectrums of neutral parent molecules. This red-shift is due to charge transfer character of the first excited state. Some spectra are vibrationally resolved, while for other molecules the spectrum do not shows any vibrational progression. This behaviour is explained by the dynamic of the excited state, this dynamic being usually is very fast, sometimes leading to the ground state through a conical intersection. The spectra of protonated molecules are very active vibrationally in comparison with neutral molecules, many vibrational modes forbidden for neutral molecule becomes active for the protonated one (Franck-Condon factor is not zero). This is reflecting the charge transfer character of the excited state. The experimental results were complemented by ab-initio calculations, which have allowed determining the electronic transition, the geometric and electronic structure of the molecule, the vibrational modes, and for some of these molecules the dynamics of excited state. Calculations are generally in very good agreement with experiments

Au chapitre 3: « Maple™-Assisted Calculations of the J-integral: A Key Parameter for the Understanding of Excited State Energy Transfer in Porphyrins and other Chromophores », une description détaillée de l'intégrale J ainsi qu’un outil pour le calcul à partir de données spectrales seront exposés. L'étude des processus de transfert d'énergie entre les chromophores pontés par truxène commencera au chapitre 4: « Origin of the Temperature Dependence of the Rate of Singlet Energy Transfer in a Three-Component Truxene-bridged Dyads ».

The first chapter of this thesis reports on the theoretical study of linear and nonlinear optical properties of organic and organometallic experimental targets developed in the group, especially quadrupolar carbo-benzene derivatives. Standard methods for the calculation and the analysis of excited states are presented first, as well as two theoretical tools developed in this work addressing: (i) the charge transfer character in terms of "hole" and "particle" densities and (ii) the visualization of the transition dipole moment from the transition density truncated to the main mono-excitations (TTD). The first excited states of the chromophores calculated at the TD-DFT level, and at the CAS- PT2 level for a few model chromophores, are then analyzed. The one-photon UV-visible absorption spectra of carbo-benzene derivatives fit with the Gouterman model originally proposed for porphyrins, where the four first excited states involve linear combinations of mono-excitations of the same four frontier molecular orbitals. The relative intensities of the absorption bands are analyzed from the transition dipole moments calculated from the TTDs. An analogy between porphyrins and carbo-benzenes is then argued. The "hole" and "particle" densities are used to study the charge transfer character of the first excited states of palladium(II) complexes, built from electron-rich carbon ligands and electron-poor phosphorus ligands. The two-photon absorption (TPA) efficiency, a third order nonlinear optical property, is then studied. For each two-photon allowed excited state, a TPA cross-section (sTPA) has been calculated, from the contribution of all possible intermediate excited states, using the "sum-over-state" (SOS) method. Most of the carbo-benzene derivatives fit with the "three level model", with a major contribution of one intermediate state to the TPA cross-section. sTPA ˜ (µ0i2*µif2)/?E2, where ?E is the difference between the energy of the intermediate state (one-photon allowed) and half the energy of the final state (two- photon allowed). The TPA efficiency can thus be analyzed from the transition dipole moments (µ0i and µif), which can be calculated from the TTDs, and the energies of the two transitions. In the second chapter, the stability of organic di- or poly-radicals was studied in collaboration with Jean-Paul Malrieu, Georges Trinquier and Esmail Alikhani. The di- or poly-radical open-shell singlet spin state of carbo-benzenes of first, second and third generation, and of related acyclic motifs, is first studied using broken-symmetry calculations. The spin-decontamination of the MS = 0 broken-symmetry solution is then performed either (i) at constant geometry according to the procedure of Labanowski et al. or (ii) following the "recipe" of Malrieu et al., yielding the optimized geometry of the open-shell singlet spin state. The stability of the latter for oligoacetylenic systems of the carbo-mer type has been compared to the one of parent oligobenzenic systems. A structural analysis of the results is discussed in terms of "spin insulating moieties" and "spin stabilizing moieties". The former may be related to aromaticity (1,4-phenylene > 1,2-ethynylene), while the latter may be related to spin delocalization. The trialkynylmethyle radical (TAM) is suggested as a particularly efficient spin stabilizing pattern. On the basis of these results, several carbo-meric synthesis targets are suggested

This Ph.D. work mainly deals with the study of fundamental photophysical processes of new styrylpyridine-type organic compounds showing charge transfer, realised using picosecond fluorescence and femtosecond transient absorption. We were interested first in the excited-state behaviour of two new hemicyanines. Methylated dimethoxystyrylpyridines molecules showed the establishment of an equilibrium between syn and anti conformations which is different in the excited state compared to the ground state, represented by a fast relaxation time of fluorescence. The second time constant corresponds to depopulation of the the excited state by non-radiative pathways as isomerization and donor twist (« loose-bolt »). Concerning styrylpyridinium derivative where phenyl group was replaced by dimethylaminothiophene, our studies proved involvment of rotation of methylpyridinium group and intersystem crossing as relaxation pathways. Secondly, we were interested in complexation properties of ether-crown susbstituted styrylpyridine molecule. Our studies showed the presence of two complexation centers (one in the center of the crown, the other one on the nitrogen of pyridine) having a different selectivity for metallic cations. Stoichiometries were confirmed by analysis of the reorientation times of formed complexes. After the study of our different compounds as elementary « building–blocks » for more complex supramolecular systems, we were interested in their potential applications with the study of systems for collection and energy transfer. First, we highlighted the existence of an ultra fast (180 fs to 6 ps) and ultra efficient (>99.7%) intramolecular energy transfer in bichromophoric systems containing two ether-crowned styrylpyridines and dissymetrised by binding of a Mg2+ cation in only one crown. It occurs from the complexed part to the non-complexed one by coulombic interaction. Another envisaged application can be the construction of complexes containing transition metals for energy or information storage. We studied first the building of a supramolecular system based on phenanthroline and containing four free ether-crowns We also proved that there exists an equilibrium between singlet and triplet excited states in these compounds complexed with Copper(I) or Silver(I). Secondly, we studied formation of complexes binding two ether-crown substituted bipyridines to a Fe2+ ion. Such a complex has got some spin crossover properties. Then, we showed that the addition of Ba2+ ions induce formation of transition metals complexes with nanometric size

A spectroscopic diagnostic tool has been developed to determine the electron temperature and the neutral density in helium, hydrogen and argon plasmas from absolutely calibrated spectroscopic measurements. For each gas, a method of analysis which uses models specific to each species present in the plasma has been defined. The experimental electron density is used an input parameter to the models, and the obsolutely calibrated spectroscopic data are processed beforehand to obtain the populations of the upper excited levels corresponding to the observed spectral lines. Fro helium plasmas, the electron temperature is inferred from the experimental helium ion excited level p = 4 population using a corona model, and the neutral density is determined from the experimental helium neutral excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model for helium neutrals. For hydrogen plasmas, combinations of the electron temperature and the neutral density are determined from the experimental hydrogen neutral excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model for hydrogen atoms. For argon plasmas, the electron temperature is inferred from the experimental argon ion excited level population using a collisional-radiative model for argon ions, and then the neutral density is determined from experimental argon neutral excited level populations using a collisional-radiative model for argon neutrals. .
