[a cura dell'autore]

The onomastics of Martial's epigrams allow an original study of anthroponyms, both linguistic and literary, in a Latin corpus. Using the modern linguistics, we have organized our research from the concepts on notoriety of the name's referent, ans of name use. For Martial, all names endowed with a stable, associated referent are notorious. Social notoriety plays with the production of the referent (such as patrons, or the emperor) in the Flavian world (of which each element is represented) ; whereas the cultural one provides the traditional exempla, which Martial uses to modifying ironically. Notorious names are the only ones that can bear rhetoric and tropic changes : these are metaphoric use (with a satiric aim) and metonymic use (more poetic). In the second part, we have brought together names without notoriety, i. D. Names with a fictitious referent. Martial is the only one who chooses them, but certainly not at random. We have distinguished mimetic use, which imitates a notorious referent ; typical use, within onomastic intertextuality and intratextuality ; secondary mimetic uses (with sociolinguistic and poetical implications) ; significant use, that leads to read a lexical meaning into the name. In these uses, Martial's eloquence appears at best. Although some of them belong to an ancient literary tradition, through them, Martial shows unequalled abundance and originality

The research is focused on the poetry and poetics of Mnasalces of Sicyon, a Greek epigrammatist of the middle of the III century B.C. The first part of the dissertation is a general introduction that deals with all the most important aspects concerning the poet and his work: biographical information and chronology; sources of the epigrams, with particular attention to P. Köln V 204; epigrammatic subgenres; language and style; metrics and prosody. The second part, which represents the main body of the dissertation, is devoted to the analysis of the epigrams, arranged thematically. The examined corpus consists of twenty-four poems, including two dubia; the corpus of the previous editions by W. Seelbach (1964) and A.S.F. Gow and D.L. Page (1965) is thus enriched by five new epigrams from P. Köln V 204 and the dubium SGO I 06/02/05. The critical text of each poem is followed by a translation, a brief introduction and a word-by-word commentary, aimed at investigating the elements of transtextuality and those of continuity and innovation in relation to the epigrammatic tradition, both literary and epigraphic. The dissertation also includes an index verborum.

Starting from a lexical point of view, this research aims at investigating the presence of musical elements within the epigrammatic production of the Hellenistic period, with references also to later authors. Two kinds of sources have been analysed: literary epigrams (including poems from the Greek Anthology, the New Posidippus, and the material collected by Gow-Page) and epigraphic epigrams (including inscriptions from Steinepigramme aus dem Griechischen Osten and Inscriptions métriques de l’Égypte greco-romain), in order to have a coherent and balanced field of investigation. The material has been divided into two main parts, “Mousikà stoikheia” and “Organikè mousa”, referred to musical categories and musical instruments. The analysis, starting from the reconstruction of the potential musical meaning of each term, based on etymology and literary and theoretical development, and going on through the interpretation of the most relevant occurrences of the term in epigrammatic texts, shows a particular sensibility towards the musical element, recalling both the terminology of musical theory and, more often, the traditional treatment of some themes belonging to the literary tradition. A final Appendix provides an index with the terms found during the textual investigation.

The aims of the present work are first, to list, translate and analyse Martial\'s epigrams in which women are the object of invective; second, to try to investigate, in the former tradition, the theme of misogyny, both in Greece (from Hesiod, in the celebrated episode of Pandora (Teogony, vv. 570-612), to the archaic iambic poets, Archilochus, Hipponax and Semonides), and in Rome (how misogyny, as a tópos, is treatead by Catullus, Horace and Juvenal). In the third place, the present research intends to study in what manner epigram, or more precisely, its vituperative possibility, appropriated the theme of misogyny, adapting it to the main characteristics of the genre, such as conciseness and acuteness. Finally, we attempt to demonstrate that the vituperation against women, in Martial, is regulated and perceived through various rhetorical practices (such as the progymnásmata) and trópoi (such as ekphrasis) that at the poet\'s time were an important part of the citizen\'s education. Therein, we intend to study, in particular, the analogies that the invective maintain, in Martial\'s epigrams, non only with the construction of images in which women are corrupted, but also with the relationship between these images and the epidictic genre.

This thesis proposes, for the first time, the reviewed edition of the Epigrammata (Epigrams) and the Epistolae (Letters) by Antonio Urceo Codro. Born in Rubiera in 1446, he was a humanist and court poet in service of the Ordelaffis, then the Bentivoglios. This well-known philologist and Hellenist was also a professor of “grammar, poetic and rhetoric” at the University in Bologna, where he died in 1500. The philological work is coupled with a historical study attempting to define the precise political and institutional context in which some of the pièces de circonstances were composed. Finally, a poetical study underlines the deep continuity of the knowledge and its permanent use by a humanist who, like his contemporaries, applied himself proofreading ancient texts, and, in parallel, writing them and practicing exegesis, becoming both a disciple and an imitator of it through his personal work. The reviewed edition of Urceo Codro’s Epigrammata is accompanied by a traduction rythmée (rhythm-based translation) along with an apparatus fontium, a conspectus metrorum and a commentary which, as far as is possible, tries to identify the sources of each poem and the models they are based on, ancient and Renaissance, in order to identify the aesthetics of the uarietas used by the author. To better understand the intellectual context of Urceo’s Epigrammata, and highlight the composition practices outlined by them, we added the reviewed edition and the annotated translation of his ten Lettres whose addressees are, among others, Ange Politien and Alde Manuce. Finally, an anthology of texts sheds light on Codro’s poetic and its essential questions (in a review of one of his handwritten poems and of three of his Silves), while taking an interest in the reception and the posterity of the Bolognese by his contemporaries (review of Bartolomeo Bianchini’s Vita Codri and of several poems written by Virgilio Porto in honour of Codro). An appendix of seventy-seven biographic records completes the portraits of contemporaries quoted by Codro in his Epistolae and Epigrammata. The review of Antonio Urceo’s Epigrammata and the Epistolae is thus coherent with the study of the historical, intellectual and literary context, as well as the analysis of a rich and teeming intertext

The thesis work I did consists in a translation of poems from the Latin Anthology with a commentary. The corpus is composed of texts from Luxorius, Symphosius, Coronatus, Caton, Felix, Florentinus and some anonymous authors. Those poems have been written in Africa, under the reign of the Vandals, between Hildiric and Geiseric’s times, and have been gathered in an anthology by the years 530-534, just before the Byzantine conquest. They were writtten in a troubled period that saw a lot of political and social changes and therefore give us many information on those times. They emphasize a sure vitality of the Latin litterature under the reign of the last Vandal kings. The translated poems are of various genres : epigrams strongly inspired from Martial, fictive declamations, riddles, cento, locus uergilianus, poems glorifying kings. Some of the poetic genre represented have obviously been created at that time. The poems reveal a high level degree of latin culture, no doubt taught in the numerous schools of rethoric of this part of the world. The poets imitate, quote or adapt the great latin authors, especially Vergil. The quality of the Latin language employed is most of the time quite close to the classical Latin. Those adaptations are a way for the poets to celebrate the glory and the magnificence of Rome beyond its end, and to declare themselves are Roman poets in front of a “barbarian” world. Furthermore the poems reveal links far more complex than it seems to be, between poets obviously belonging to rich roman and scholastic community. This community used to rule Roman Africa before the Vandals as well as the settle political power

The aim of this work is to study hellenistic poetry through a new concept of « humility ». Poetic and metapoetic aspects of Callimachus’ Hecale andepigrams, Theocritus’ Idylls and epigrams, Herodas’ Mimiambi and Leonidas’ of Tarentum epigrams are explored in this light

The main purpose of this Thesis is to demonstrate – through the analysis of the epigrams which form the corpus under discussion – the influential and paradigmatic role Ovid’s work played both in defining the artistic profile of a prominent and prolific author such as Ausonius, a leading intellectual of his time and a poet of the highest calibre, and in shaping the course of late antique Latin literature, as this evolved in different literary areas and forms. The Thesis aims also at establishing the active, dynamic, and entirely original contribution of the Ovidian corpus to the revitalization in late antique culture of traditional literary genres, such as the epigram, in which a new ‘life’ and a new ‘voice’ are granted to the female protagonists of some of the most memorable tales of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The Thesis comprises a list of Abbreviations, an Introduction, five chapters, followed by the Conclusions and, finally, the Bibliography. In the Introduction, I draw material from the most authoritative and recent scholarly studies on Ovid’s influence in late antique Latin literature, engaging critically with them, and offering a selective review of the evidence which testifies to Ovid’s presence in late antique authors, especially in the non-epigrammatic literary production of Ausonius. I also explain the reasons for choosing the texts I discuss and my research aims. In Chapter 1 I explore the intellectual climate of the period from the fourth to the sixth centuries, focusing on the respect shown towards the ueteres ‘the ancients’ and on the obvious tendency of late antique writers to look back to a group of authors that may be viewed as a sort of ‘dead poets’ society’, that is, a class of cultured authors who function as examples for the late antique writers, though they are not contemporary with them. I also dedicate a section of my analysis to bilingualism and to the benefits that were drawn from school-teaching in the educational environment of fourth-century Gaul. Finally, I offer a short discussion of the manuscript tradition, the dating, and the stylistic/rhetorical structure of the Ausonian epigrams. Chapter 2 contains the first-ever comprehensive analysis of Epigr. 72 Green, a poem which is now typically considered as the starting-point for the study of the overall Ovidian hypotext in the epigrammatic corpus of the poet from Bordeaux. Here, the relationship between truth and fiction and between ‘otherness’ and authorial representation has proved to be crucial for identifying Ausonius’ poetic techniques and for understanding the micro-level themes through which the distinctly Ovidian character of the epigram unfolds. The purpose of Chapter 3 is to analyse in detail two more epigrams, which so far have never received a comprehensive scholarly discussion as separate poetic compositions, namely Epigr. 57 and 58 Green, both of them dedicated to Niobes fabula ‘the tale of Niobe’. In the case of Epigr. 57, my main purpose is to emphasize the status of the poem as an ‘adaptation’, that is, as a text that has its own Greek ‘model’, namely Anth. Plan. 129. This identification and the realization that Ausonius has constructed his epigram by superimposing on his Greek ‘model’ an Ovidian intertext (Pont. 1, 2, 27-30) sheds light on one of the ways in which Ausonius ‘Romanizes’ his poetic ‘models’ through the use of Ovid’s lexicon. Likewise, the poetic framework of Epigr. 58 becomes clearer through the study of features traditionally associated with the text of inscriptions and the conventions that pertain to the poetic expression of dolor ‘pain’ and to the rhetorical paradigm of miseratio ‘compassion’. In the following chapters I turn my attention to two Ausonian poems which deal with the tale of Echo, and I dedicate an entire chapter to each of them, namely Chapter 4 to Epigr. 11 Green and Chapter 5 to Epigr. 110 Green. The first of these epigrams (= Epigr. 11) is linked to the first epigram on Niobe (= Epigr. 57) that I discussed in Chapter 3, and that is because Ausonius exploits in both of them the rhetorical device of the effigies locutura ‘the image that will talk’. Through a systematic analysis of the forms of ancient literary riddles I formulate a hypothesis about possible new links between our epigram and ancient riddle-literature and I apply this method in attempting to decode the meaning of the first part of the poem. My impression (on the basis of the epigrams I have analysed) is that Ausonius in each of his compositions wishes to keep his readers, especially a restricted circle of readers, constantly stimulated through their hermeneutic engagement with the text. Starting from this premise, I discuss the structure and meaning of Epigr. 11 with the aid of the most authoritative modern studies on narratology and literary theory, which complement my philological and textual methodological approaches. In Epigr. 110, Ausonius clearly wishes to evoke in his readers’ minds the Ovidian hypotext and the fact that Ausonius’ poem depends on it. Inspired from the final section of the tale of Echo and Narcissus in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Ausonius’ epigram requires, first of all, a careful textual analysis of both of its couplets from a lexical perspective and, then, an investigation of its Ovidian components. Unlike in Epigr. 11, the innovative feature of which is the complete absence of the figure of Narcissus, in Epigr. 110 the emphasis is on the condition of infelicitas ‘unhappiness’ and on the pain that accompanies the feeling of the loss of the beloved, whose name is mentioned explicitly in the text. Another point of view through which I read both Epigr. 11 and Epigr. 110 is that of ‘semantic ambiguity’. The intense elegiac flavour of Epigr. 110 invites the reader to perceive it as an inscriptio ficta ‘a fictional inscription’, similar, for example, to the inscription that marks the end of the Ovidian epistle of Dido to Aeneas or to the couplet that Cynthia constructs for herself in Prop. 4, 7, 85-86; I have not, however, excluded from my analysis alternative interpretations of the epigram as a casestudy of rhetorical discourse. Through my research, I have come to appreciate the undeniable sophisticated poetic spirit of Ausonius in his reworking of mythological Ovidian plots. In other words, Ausonius rendered Ovid’s poetry an integral part of his own literary aesthetics, granting a dignified eloquence and a new literary context to the heroines of the Ovidian myth whom Ausonius chose to include in his epigrams. This new context functions as a literary vehicle that can incorporate numerous interpretative options for Ausonius’ readers, options that were available to them because of the remarkable tradition of the Graeco-Roman literary epigram.
