In my letter I refer to publications around syndemics, and link them up to other health concepts, calling for a stronger link between medical, social and environmental sciences to advance the global management of pandemic threats. Calling for close collaboration of ecological and conservation sciences with medical sciences is very timely. This letter will raise awareness that concepts like EcoHealth, OneHealth and medical terms such as Syndemics are largely overlapping and that only a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach will move our understanding forward on the inextricable link of human health and environmental health.

Biosurfactants derived from microorganisms have attracted widespread attention in scientific research due to their unique surface activity, low toxicity, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and stability under extreme conditions. Biosurfactants are widely used in many fields, such as medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection. Therefore, this review aims to comprehensively review and analyze the various applications of biosurfactants in the medical field. The central roles of biosurfactants in crucial medical areas are explored, like drug delivery, induction of tumor cell differentiation or death, treating bacterial and viral effects, healing wounds, and immune regulation. Moreover, a new outlook is introduced on optimizing the capabilities of biosurfactants through modification and gene recombination for better use in medicine. The current research challenges and future research directions are described, aiming to provide valuable insights for continuous study of biosurfactants in medicine.

The authors made an attempt to show the differentiation and integration of preventive medical Sciences and ecological disciplines as a complex dialectical process characteristic for the development of the science of the late 20th - early 21st centuries, and to analyze the methodological links of preventive medical Sciences with numerous ecological disciplines developed in recent decades. The article deals with the processes of formation of new ecological disciplines studying the system “environment - human”, a comparative analysis of preventive medical and environmental Sciences on their goals, subjects and objects of study. The study of the environmental impact on human health was shown to be carried out by already formed medical Sciences, and primarily preventive orientation (General hygiene, Social hygiene, Communal hygiene, Food hygiene, Occupational health, Military hygiene, Radiation hygiene, etc.), having accumulated considerable experience in the areas of knowledge studied by them. Disciplines arising from the differentiation of the environment and studying the preservation of life and health, in essence, duplicate preventive medical Sciences, which inevitably leads to the repetition of the path and does not give the desired results in the increment and development of new scientific knowledge. At the same time, the process of interaction and unification of efforts of preventive medical Sciences and environmental disciplines can make a significant contribution to the successful solution of such important state tasks as the preservation of public health and environmental protection from the negative impact of anthropogenic factors. The application of a systematic interdisciplinary approach in the interaction of preventive medical Sciences and environmental disciplines involves the presence of scientific facts, a complex of deep knowledge in the areas under study, the development of a number of theories, as well as the analysis of environmental and medical problems.

Abstract In this paper, a new Poisson area-biased Ailamujia distribution has been formulated to analyse count data. It was created by combining two distributions: the Poisson and area-biased Ailamujia distributions, using the compounding technique. Several distributional properties of the formulated distribution were studied. Its ageing characteristics were determined and expressed explicitly. A variety of diagrams were used to demonstrate the characteristics of the probability mass function (pmf) and the cumulative distribution function (cdf). The parameter of the developed model was estimated by employing the maximum likelihood estimation approach. Finally, two data sets were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the investigated distribution.

Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) has matured into a mainstream technique in many areas of microscopy. Instrumentation has evolved and our understanding of some of the imaging mechanisms has progressed. However the majority of laboratories where ESEMs are located are based around the materials sciences. Despite the fact that ESEM is the only SEM instrument that permits liquid water to be present whilst imaging, the housing of such a microscope in biological EM units has been relatively rare. This authors laboratory is a multi-user EM unit based in a School of Biological Sciences. There exists the opportunity for basic biological scientists, clinical and pre-clinical medical and dental researchers to make use of such a resource. Indeed as the ESEM is housed alongside a conventional high vacuum instrument and a cryo high vacuum instrument there exists the ideal opportunity to carry out comparative studies. This study will examine a range of biological samples using ESEM, cryo SEM and dry high vacuum SEM.

In this paper I discuss the application of the principles of medical ethics and of medical research to the case of children and others whose consent to treatment and to research is problematic. Public health depends substantially on the possibility of ongoing research into all conditions which affect the health of the people. Constraints on this research are therefore a public health issue. Moreover and more importantly the possibility of predictive testing and indeed of screening for health-relevant conditions is an important public health tool, and limitations on the use of this tool are of great significance to public health medicine. Having considered the particular problems created by research and predictive testing on children for late-onset conditions I go on to discuss research on those whose consent is problematic more generally. I conclude with radical recommendations for the reform of The Declaration of Helsinki and of the International Ethics Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects, prepared by the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS).

Machine Learning (ML), a branch of Artificial Intelligence, which is competing with human experts in many specialized biomedical fields and will play an increasing role in precision medicine. As with any other technological advances in medicine, the keys to understanding must be integrated into practitioner training. To respond to this challenge, this viewpoint discusses some necessary changes in the health studies curriculum that could help practitioners to interpret decisions the made by a machine and question them in relation to the patient’s medical context. The complexity of technology and the inherent criticality of its use in medicine also necessitate a new medical profession. To achieve this objective, this viewpoint will propose new medical practitioners with skills in both medicine and data science: the Doctor in Medical Data Sciences.

Abstract This toxic autobiography seeks to open the conversation around the intersecting injustices marking the epistemological, material, political, and porous entanglements between endometriosis, the bodily inflammatory chronic condition the author is affected by, and the toxic waste fires raging in the territory known as the Land of Fires, between the provinces of Naples and Caserta, in southern Italy. Thinking with the sprouting intersection of environmental humanities and disability justice, while rooted in a critical environmental justice and transfeminist standpoint, the article uncovers the toxic embodiment where bodies and places are enmeshed. Although a growing body of literature acknowledges the role of chemical buildup and endocrine-disrupting toxins in the occurrence of endometriosis, the author delineates the epistemic injustices that keep this relationship silent in mainstream medical discourses. Through the blend of environmental memoir, embodied knowledge, activist campaigns, and medical literature, the article exposes the accumulation of environmental, medical, ableist, misogynist, and capitalist slow violence that living with endometriosis brings about. While emerging from the materiality of experiencing trauma and pain, the article reclaims the emancipatory possibilities that can be articulated. From the politicization of an “invisible” illness standpoint, the article proposes a toxic autobiography in which transfeminist, environmental, and disability justice politics are collectively affirmed through situated ecopolitics of response-ability that accounts for interdependence and self-determination of marginal bodies and territories.

Pharmacovigilance deals with the study of adverse drug reactions. It provides information from which to detect adverse update of drugs. The environmental impact of drugs is a rapidly evolving problem. Withdrawal of diclofenac from veterinary practice and various other such exampleshaving direct impact on the environment led to the development ofa newdiscipline which may be called as “pharmacoenvironmentology”. Evaluation of the potential environment risks posed by the medical product is thus needed. This impact should be assessed, and on a case by case basis, special arrangements to limit it should be envisaged.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Vol. 04 No. 01 January’20 Page : 19-25

The One Environmental Health research approach, a subspecialty of the One Health initiative, focuses on toxic chemicals. Distinct disciplines work together to give a holistic perspective of a health concern through discrete disciplines, including, but not limited to, public health and the medical and veterinary sciences. In this article, we illustrate the concept of One Environmental Health with two case studies. One case study focuses on alligators and contributions to the field of endocrine disruption. The other case study focuses on whales and contributions to understanding carcinogenic metals. Both studies illustrate how the health of sentinel organisms has the potential to inform about the health of humans and the ecosystem.

Introduction: One topic still debated in the scientific community and beyond is the influence of genetic or environmental factors on an individual's behavior. The essence of this debate lies in discussing the role and impact of genetic and environmental factors on an individual's behavior, known otherwise as the nature-nurture debate. In a survey-type study, we sought to assess perceptions of the nature-nurture argument among first-year technical medical sciences students at the University of Tirana, Albania. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a survey-type questionnaire on a sample of 100 first-year medical university students at the Faculty of Medical Technical Sciences, University of Medicine in Tirana, in April 2023. The questionnaire was based on six specific questions underlying the potential impact of genetic (nature) and environmental factors (nurture) influencing certain types of behavior, such as personality, sexual orientation, and intelligence—or psycho-emotional stress. Results: According to the analysis of the data collected on our sample of students, 84.9% of them perceive that acquired factors (nurture) influence more than innate factors (nature) in forming personality traits, whereas 15.1% perceive the opposite. After adjusting for potential confounders, environmental factors remained statistically significant compared with genetic factors (odds ratio 1.42, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.97). Conclusion: Genetic and sociological research has shown that genetics, life experiences, and environmental factors influence the expression of key traits in shaping behavior. In this study, we confirm the perception of this interaction among medical students. For some aspects of behavior, students are less likely to believe in genetic explanations and more likely to believe in environmental causes.

The aim of the research presented in this paper was to identify differences in environmental awareness among students of degree programmes in various fields of study. A research hypothesis was adopted stating that the field of science within which a given field of study is conducted influences students’ perception of environmental problems. Based on surveys conducted using an original questionnaire among 418 students representing 106 fields of the study carried out at 44 Polish universities, within the framework of all fields of science, a number of regularities were revealed. It was shown that each of the distinguished groups of students has its own, separate characteristics. The greatest similarities can be found between the students of medical, natural and social sciences. Students of the humanities and technical sciences differ significantly from them.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic declaration in 2019 required schools and universities to close, challenging students and their education. The mandatory stay-at-home quarantine rules and change to online education accentuate how mental health plays a crucial role in maintaining performance during challenging times. Coping self-efficacy (CSE) is associated with higher mental health levels and resilience to distress. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate students’ CSE and related factors. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, CSE scores and demographic characteristics of the participants were evaluated through online questionnaires. A total of 364 medical students from Tabriz University Medical Sciences completed the questionnaires and were included in the study. CSE scores of students and their demographic characteristics were obtained, and the analysis was performed using a t-test and one-way ANOVA. Results: Of those included, 37.1% were males and the mean CSE score of the students was 83.75±24.8. Students’ type of residence was found to be significantly related to their CSE scores (P=0.003). Students living with their spouses had the highest CSE scores, while those living with their parents had the lowest CSE scores. The association of CSE scores with gender, marital status, academic year of study, and source of income was not significant. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, students living with their parents had the lowest CSE scores. CSE plays a crucial role in managing distressful events, and our findings may be useful in identifying groups prone to stressful factors and help enhance future educational policies and planning.

Every science develops and improves with time. The development of the science of Latin language and medical terminology in the field of medicine is related to medical sciences. The names of medical news, diseases, and drugs have been given in Latin-Greek for centuries and will remain so. It is not for nothing that Latin is recognized as the international medical language. This will further help medical scientists to work together.

In this article, we review evidence from the social and medical sciences on the causes and effects of lead exposure. We argue that lead exposure is an important subject for sociological analysis because it is socially stratified and has important social consequences—consequences that themselves depend in part on children's social environments. We present a model of environmental inequality over the life course to guide an agenda for future research. We conclude with a call for deeper exchange between urban sociology, environmental sociology, and public health, and for more collaboration between scholars and local communities in the pursuit of independent science for the common good.

BACKGROUND: Medical sciences universities should be accountable to the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and abilities of graduates; it is needed to investigate the structural and environmental components of universities in order to assess the accordance of these components with the third-millennium universities’ components. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we focus on accordance assessment of structural and environmental elements of Iranian medical sciences universities with the corresponding components of third-millennium universities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023. The population included all faculty members of universities of medical sciences in Iran in the academic year 2020–2021. The sample size was obtained using Morgan table and cluster random sampling. A reliable and valid researcher-made questionnaire was developed to collect the data based on the characteristics of higher education institutions in the third millennium (CVI > 0.79, CVR > 0.62, α =0.88). Statistical analysis was done in both descriptive and inferential methods by SPSS 25. RESULTS: The results showed that the highest mean score of population’s attitude toward structural components was attributed to faculty members (mean = 3.53), and the lowest mean score belonged to the curriculum (mean = 3.45). Besides, the results demonstrated that the highest mean score of attitudes toward environmental components was related to the university’s accountability (mean = 3.52). The findings also showed that there was a significant difference between the scores of faculty members’ attitudes (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The results conveyed that the structural and environmental status of universities is not in line with developed universities. Of course, we should not be cynical about the challenges of these universities, but we should detect them and adopt logical and realistic strategies to deal with them. If these challenges are considered opportunities, they will surely motivate and promote the higher education system.

The global use of psychopharmaceuticals such as antidepressants has been steadily increasing. However, the environmental consequences of increased use are rarely considered by medical professionals. Worldwide monitoring efforts have shown that pharmaceuticals are amongst the multitude of anthropogenic pollutants found in our waterways, where excretion via urine and feces is thought to be the primary mode of pharmaceutical contamination. Despite the lack of clarity surrounding the effects of the unintentional exposure to these chemicals, most notably in babies and in developing fetuses, the US Environmental Protection Agency does not currently regulate any psychopharmaceuticals in drinking water. As the underlying reasons for the increased incidence of mental illness—particularly in young children and adolescents—are poorly understood, the potential effects of unintentional exposure warrant more attention. Thus, although links between environmental contamination and physiological and behavioral changes in wildlife species—most notably in fish—have been used by ecologists and wildlife biologists to drive conservation policy and management practices, we hypothesize that this knowledge may be underutilized by medical professionals. In order to test this hypothesis, we created a hierarchically-organized citation network built around a highly-cited “parent” article to explore connections between aquatic toxicology and medical fields related to neurodevelopment. As suspected, we observed that studies in medical fields such as developmental neuroscience, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry cite very few to no papers in the aquatic sciences. Our results underscore the need for increased transdisciplinary communication and information exchange between the aquatic sciences and medical fields.

Abstract In 2018, the Government of India approved the establishment of the New All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Thoppur, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. As the most important amenity for continuing primary care and rescue response is a healthcare facility, a secure electricity supply becomes an imperative necessity. Hence, as the energy supplier for the new AIIMS, Madurai, this paper proposes a microgrid combined with the utility grid. The microgrid consists of a 4-MW photovoltaic system, a 1.8-MW wind-turbine energy-conversion system, a backup diesel generator capable of meeting the forecasted maximum demand and a 1-MW battery energy-storage system. The AIIMS Microgrid will have a service providing a capacity of 20 MVA following integration with the utility grid. The proposed microgrid would be the first attempt at healthcare facilities in India since its first day of work to ensure the availability of electricity. It would have a 9.8% return on investment, a 13.6% internal rate of return and a payback period of 6.75 years once it is operational, as well as an attractive levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of USD 0.07547/kWh. It would provide an environmentally friendly atmosphere by avoiding an annual emission of 6 261 132 kg of carbon dioxide, 27 362 kg of sulphur dioxide and 12 838 kg of nitrogen oxides as compared to power supplied entirely from the utility grid.

Aim. To justify the peculiarities of teaching the basics of evolution and ecology in a medical university to ensure a high level of general biological training and to achieve medical and biological orientation of first-year students. Methods. Study and analysis of typical and working programs, monographs, textbooks, didactic materials and methodical recommendations from the discipline "Medical Biology" of medical universities. Results. In the conditions of reforming modern medical education, biology teachers are paying more and more attention to the formation of a scientific picture of the world, that is, the formation of a worldview in future doctors, which corresponds to modern approaches to the integration of the content of theoretical and clinical education and the need for its continuity in the further practical activities of a doctor-specialist in any field of medicine. Teaching involves conveying to students three possible regimes of biological evolution: Lamarck’s, environmental factors influence development (epigenesis); Darwinian, when random mutations are selected by environmental factors for progressive development (biogenesis); Rait's, in which there are only coincidences. Conclusions. During formation the personality of the future doctor, teaching the basics of evolution and ecology should combine the material of classical biology with the latest information on achievements in the fields of natural sciences.
