Zhang, Xiaoyan. "Cross-industry digital innovation in asset maintenance : a phenomenon-based exploratory case study." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Ecully, Ecole centrale de Lyon, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023ECDL0051.
A phenomenon-based exploratory case study Abstract This thesis captures, describes, documents, and conceptualize an unexplored yet significant phenomenon, cross-industry digital innovation, by cross-fertilizing the asset maintenance in aviation and rail freight industries. Rail is the most energy-efficient and low-emitting freight transport mode. However, the status quo of rail freight wagon maintenance in Europe presents a state of inefficiency and lack of intelligence. With the rapid development of digital technologies, condition-based and predictive maintenance represent an excellent opportunity to yield a big efficiency leap in wagon maintenance, thus potentially making rail freight transport competitive and sustainable. This thesis argues that how to leverage digital technologies to benefit rail freight wagon maintenance is not only a technical problem of how to make good use of digital technology to improve maintenance efficiency, but also a strategic problem of how to innovate business model to generate value growth for rail freight industry. When solving such complex practical problems, sometimes the best ideas come from outside your industry. As initiated by the Aero-Ferro Benchmark project, learning the best practice from aviation will contribute to rail freight success. Thus, this thesis aims to theoretically conceptualize how to carry out cross-industry digital innovation in asset maintenance, and to practically solve the problem of what rail freight can learn from the aviation industry. In this respect, this thesis reviews relevant theories in the field of innovation and strategy aiming to find theoretical support. However, based on the knowledge gaining from literature, it is found that cross-industry digital innovation is such an infant field that no well-established and well-fitting theory could directly help define, analyze and address this complex issue. This motivates us to conceptualize a new theoretical framework to explain this emerging phenomenon. To achieve this purpose, this thesis conducts an exploratory case study on digital innovation in asset maintenance in aviation and rail freight industries. We start from determining a preliminary asset maintenance system framework from two sub-system (technical system and business system) to guide the phenomenon-based theorizing. Then, an abductive reasoning and system combing approach is followed, together with literature review and case study as the main research methods. Findings from case study on the technical system argue that the maintenance strategy of rail freight wagons will undergo an imperative paradigm shift from preventive to predictive, especially in terms of utilizing digital technology and data management. Thus, a technical architecture of condition monitoring based predictive maintenance for rail freight wagons is proposed in this thesis. For the business system, this thesis analyzes the changing roles of main actors in this emerging digital maintenance landscape and the evolution of their business models in wagon maintenance ecosystem, forecasting the potential business model innovation of rolling stock(wagon) OEMs, cargo rail operators and wagon keepers. In doing so, this thesis offers insightful theoretical and practical contributions. First, this thesis contributes to advancing the theory building in cross-industry digital innovation. A phenomenon-based cross-industry digital innovation strategy framework is developed. Second, this thesis contributes to guiding the problem-solving strategy of digital innovation in wagon maintenance in rail freight industry

This thesis relates to the assessment of the efficiency of preventive maintenance (PM) and of the corrective maintenance (CM) over the electrical network’s equipments. This assessment has to allow the consideration of the prior knowledge of experts on the behaviour of certain devices. The prior opinion is here necessary because of the considered framework which involves reliable equipments and thus few data of breakdowns to be run for the inference. We propose in this thesis a new approach for inferring the efficiency of CM with addition of prior information (named Méthode A). It leans on several results of recent works led in the field of arithmetic reduction of the age models (ARA). This method has to allow the use of prior data in the proposed model, and avoid some limitations inherent to the classical Bayesian approach. Although the tests of Méthode A present good properties of estimation, we notice that its generalization in the observation of a process of minimal CM and imperfect PM (ARA1) was not immediate during the led tests. We also present in these works a method, named Méthode B, used for the inference of parameters of the proposed model in the case of minimal CM and imperfect PM (ARA1)

The thesis aims at exploring the possible development of experience by means of language. Professional integration and training situations are linked to the efficiency of what is experienced. As regards the significance of language, it must be considered as the intelligibility of the relationship with the surround. The qualitative study, carried out during 3 interviews with a young lady for 5 years, aims at focusing on the intellibility of the surround. The different language theories are at the disposal of a dialogical understanding of discursive situations. The experience development can be explained thanks to an inside process and the relationship, between what has been lived and what is experienced, between sedimentation and decantation of what has been lived. Then, one can create a never achieved belonging background, which is still under process. And finally it enacts a poetizing background. The continuity between these backgrounds enables an ability to emerge. This one consists in experiencing a receptiveness of mind posture during training

Cells maintain their morphology and produce forces thanks to the cytoskeleton, which is composed of three types of protein polymers, amongst which the actin microfilaments. Actin filaments assemble into diverse architectures, which assembly and disassembly is tightly controlled in space and time. Indeed, the progressive hydrolysis of ATP in the monomers causes the actin filaments to age. Thus, actin needs to be recycled. When assembly and disassembly compensate, different actin architectures are in a dynamic steady state, in which the pool of actin monomers is renewed. Disassembly of actin structures also maintains a large reservoir of polymerization-ready monomers ready to assemble when needed by the cell. The lamellipodium is the locomotory organelle of the cell, and is made of a thin yet very dense sheet of dendritic actin network, with regulatory proteins. A pivotal protein is ADF/Cofilin, which is responsible of the disassembly of old actin filaments by fragmentation and debranching. To date, there have been extensive studies about the microscopic mechanisms, but if one wants to understand cell motility, one must decipher the collective and macroscopic disassembly of the dendritic actin network.By combining motility media reconstituted from purified proteins, and a new surface micro-patterning technique, I was able to reconstitute lamellipodium-like dendritic networks in vitro. During this thesis I explored the parameters that control the macroscopic disassembly of these networks. This work shows that the disassembly of dendritic actin networks depends on their architecture (density) and geometry (size): dense or extended networks are less efficiently disassembled and remain cohesive longer. Simulations show that these effects can be explains by a local depletion of ADF/Cofilin in the volume surrounding the network. Besides, networks of heterogeneous densities acquire directionality. This steering is modulated by selective disassembly of the networks by ADF/Cofilin. In parallel, these studies established a ratio at which networks are at a dynamic steady state. This work goes further than the fundamentally important studies about fragmentation of individual actin filaments, and establishes new parameters that control the disassembly of dendritic actin at the macroscopic scale

"Action publique et gouvernance des institutions publiques de recherche en Afrique centrale : cas du Centre national de la recherche scientifique et technologique (CENAREST) au Gabon." Повний текст джерелаDespite some efforts deployed by the government, the management of the CENAREST and the sector of scientific research in Gabon do not seem to meet expectations of the government actors and Gabonese citizens. Even if authorities often intervened, that emphasis was put on scientific research and that it is known to be a great lever for the country development, it does not seem to be accompanied by incentives acts and measures promoting a reassuring and efficient management of the public sector and research activities. The purpose of this doctoral research is to produce an explanatory model for understanding public action and resistance toward change shown by the institutional and governmental authorities, despite the malfunctions that were observed by international partners as well as the Gabon party. This research has allowed to show – with a framework inspired by Muller – values, images, standards and algorithms present within 16 stories narrating the practices of actors evolving in the CENAREST and the research sector in Gabon. This qualitative research is in the field of cognitive analysis of public policies, sometimes called political sociology of public action. In addition to the analysis of sectoral policies by Muller and the literature review, it benefits from the crossing of the biographical approach elaborated by Bertaux. The cognitive analysis of the data also shows, on one hand, how this work has contributed to the understanding of role, position and execution contexts as well as mechanisms of scientific and technological research in Gabon and the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC). On the other hand, it is fair to admit that Gabon is not a modern or complex society yet (Muller, 1985, 2005). Research shows perfectly that the absence, of both overall process of segmentation and the sectoral policy of scientific and technological research, depends on stammering and embryonic character of Gabonese society. The deficit observed in those areas, which are fairly well articulated and dynamic, explains the lack of mediators of social change in Gabon. In team sports, offensive transition situation is defined as the switch from defensive to offensive status as a consequence of a beneficial turn-over in the ball possession. For soccer coaches, this situation is considered to give rise to opportunities to score a goal. The whole aim of this work is to describe and characterize how teammates of a same team are coordinated themselves during various offensive transition situations in situ. For this purpose, we adopt the team cognition’s line of research to describe the way teammates share cognitive contents enabling coordination. First, we have identified knowledge elements shared by players related to offensive transition situation at the beginning of the season. Then, we have characterized (a) the forms of connection between the objectives aimed at by the players, (b) the sharing of contextual information and (c) the sharing of knowledge elements during offensive transition situations. Our results shed the light on new knowledge elements for the comprehension of a team during complex and dynamic situations as such as diversity of shared elements and characterization of the evolution of the forms of sharedness. As a practical perspective, we propose a reflection about soccer training based on the constructive ergonomics approach supporting approach of both capabities and enabling environments for the development of efficacy collective in soccer

In some of Quebec’s unionized sectors, important initiatives have been deployed in order to prevent mental health problems in the workplace. For over three decades, visionary union representatives have built working peer assistance structures, won important legal struggles and have developed innovative approaches aiming to correct or improve work organization. As the neoliberal ideology and its related work organization principles contribute to intensify work, leading to a weakening of the workers psyche, and as the balance of power favors employers more and more, it seems like an opportune time to survey the experience of those visionary union representatives in order to get a better understanding of union actions regarding mental health in the workplace and its structuring process. This thesis studies Quebec’s union initiatives concerning mental health in the workplace and aiming to prevent and correct problems like psychological distress, burnout, harassment, depression, violence, work related suicide, etc. In order to achieve this objective, a mixed theoretical approach is used. On the one hand, a large philosophical perspective is adopted. Authors Thomas Hobbes, Adam Smith, Karl Marx and Hannah Arendt are referred to in order to forge a better understanding of human interactions and action. By extracting their respective views of the world, of action and of social link, an analytic model is built, which could tie the life experience of union representatives to these different views, therefore achieving a better understanding of the ideological basis on which they built up their action and how it had influenced their individual and collective history. On the other hand, the social experience theory (Dubet, 2009; 1994) is selected as a way to analyze more precisely the work of union representatives. This theory identifies three logics of action, all complementary and in tension with one another, with which all social actors must deal with: integration, strategy and subjectivation. The coexistence of these three logics means that the actor’s experience of the living world is not a simple reproduction mechanism, applying social determination learned from their predecessors. Actors are also subjects of their own experiences and capable of distancing themselves from their own socialization in order to understand their act; they take place in the world in a critic dialectic. This theory sheds a light on what eases or restrains individual and collective action in regard to mental health in the workplace and describes how union representatives mobilize themselves in order to respond to the many needs of their members. This qualitative research uses a life trajectory methodology (Rhéaume 2008; Bertaux 2006). Twenty union representatives describe the suffering work experiences (Dejours, 2008) lived by workers and present initiatives they deployed in order to help them. The situations described by the participants show how some work organization elements are linked to domination experiences (Martuccelli, 2004) and have impacts on mental health in the workplace: the collateral damage of productivism and hyperflexibility, occupational injuries, occupational diseases and horror situations in the workplace, pernicious workplace social dynamics and abusive uses of the judicial system. The study also demonstrates the extent to which union initiatives contribute to solve these problems and the key factors in that regard: interdependence, empowerment, social justice and struggle for dignity. Four categories have been forged to describe those initiatives: social link care with peer assistance, legal defense, collective agreement clauses and actions targeting the work organization. Finally, the thesis presents three union representative profiles: militance which tries to build an us in the workplace, professionalization which tries to have its utility and competence recognized, and the peer assistants which aims to develop an action centered on the self. Their meeting shows the development of a union praxis which promotes and protects dignity of work and workers.

The purpose of this study is to create a picture of school principals’ practices concerning the instructional supervision of their teachers. This study will allow researchers to assess the principal’s needs prior to a research-action-training. In order to achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 principals (N=19) working for the Découvreurs School Board in Quebec City. These participants consisted of 9 males (N=9) and 10 females (N=10) of various ages and seniority degrees, and were leaders of primary and secondary schools, as well as adult learning centers This study was realised using the thematic analysis method as described by Paillé and Mucchielli (2012). In order to illustrate the main themes discovered, a thematic tree was created and is presented. Five main themes emerged from the analysis: (1) there is an explosion and a large variety of different instructional supervision models found in schools, (2) principals rely on political structures found within the school system to facilitate and justify their instructional supervision actions, (3) principals expressed their need for a supervision standard, a guide or a method to support their practice, for support from instructional supervision professionals, for a system allowing principals to exchange and share about their practice and for a guide to support them in dealing with non-compliant teachers, and (4) comments and self-reflections linked to their instructional supervision of teachers actions, (5) the school structure and (6) collaboration within the school. Keywords: School principals, instructional supervision of teachers, collaboration, teacher resistance.

In the French child protection system, formal kinship care is rarely pronounced (7% of Out-of-home care). They represent a special figure of delegation to relatives or friends. In this perspective, we consider the kinship care as a family reconfiguration since the protection of childhood displaces and transfers to others adults than the parents, the child custody. These situations allow us to think differently about family transformations. Thus, our research crosses different fields, the parenthood and the protection of childhood. In the specific context of placement, we interogate parenting sharing between different actors. To do this, we cross the differents views of the institution and of the families concerned. A total of 65 interviews were conducted: 31 with social workers in charge of the educational follow-up of children in care and 34 with parents and carers concerned. Our thesis highlights a reconfiguration of family roles with the daily of the kinship care. The carers take on a substitute family role, upsetting places around the child: grandparents, aunts, etc. assume the role of mother and/or father. This transformation of family roles is not accepted in the same way by social workers: some parental substitutions are acceptable and others are not. The different treatment depending on the parents’ status: if it is considered by the social worker as vacancy or not. In this perspective, the relationships between the various actors of the kinship care(family and professional) are analyzed in terms of triad and no longer in a duality between parents and professionals. Therefore, kinship care reconfigures relations between parents and relatives, but also between them and social workers. These situations then question the consideration of placement in terms of multi-parenthood by child protection
Al-Aghbari, Diana. "Integrating pragmatic competence in teaching English to the students of medicine at Taiz University." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016STRAC016/document.
One of the goals of teaching a language is to make learners aware of how to use it to serve a communicative purpose. This lies within the scope of pragmatic competence. This research deals with teaching pragmatics in a context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), namely the faculty of medicine at Taiz University. It investigates medical students’ level of pragmatic competence with the ultimate aim of integrating it in the classroom. The study makes use of a questionnaire composed of a Discourse Completion Task to examine students’ ability to produce speech acts and an awareness test to measure their ability to identify appropriate and inappropriate utterances. The other tool is an interview conducted to explore graduate students’ perceptions towards pragmatic competence. The data are analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The study findings reveal a low level of pragmatic competence among students in the production and awareness levels. Besides, a positive tendency is shown towards the importance of pragmatic competence. Accordingly, a tentative model is proposed to incorporate pragmatic competence with the help of a medical TV show which will keep them motivated in learning English

Based on the conceptual developments brought to the theory of the activity by occupational psychology, this research explores the genesis and the functions of the instruments used by the subjects living with a chronic disease in their daily life given that patient ‘s participation in their own care is conceived as a work. The research is based on analysis of fourteen interviews conducted with people affected by one or more severe chronic diseases. It explores and analyses different situations describing how the subject affected by a chronic disease creates, invents different means to « act on oneself » in order to stay alive . This research describes how participants living with one or several chronic diseases use artefacts, tools, instruments , strategies to maintain active the multiple dimensions of their involvement with the world. Using different conceptual frameworks of research on work such as extended instrumental theory ( Rabardel), mediated activity ( Vygotski), the patient’s work ( Tourette-Turgis), content analysis of interviews shows three different categories of instruments ( material, intangible, mixted ) used by the participants of the study. These instruments seem to fulfill the functions of organizers of activities and transformations of the activities and the subjects

This research based on an inductive approach, studies what the students became after having studied in a high school where different educational methods and an official school project inspired by the new education emphasize the ambition to train responsible and autonomous young students, open-minded as well as creative, who are able to adapt, evolve and work in a team. The methodological device of data collection consists of 42 accounts made by former students of this particular school who left the institution between 1990 and 2005, but also of secondary analyses of existing surveys, statistics produced by the school institution and the follow-up of 450 former students on social networks since 2008. The results show how these students built their identity thanks to a particular school experience and how according to them, their school years changed who they are today. They also show that what was decisive in the long run for their own personal success, their social and professional integration, happened outside their class, thanks to relationships and autonomous learning process between peers, but also between adults and themselves, or with the building of lasting social network and in the development of psychosocial skills where the collective dimension is central. This study also demonstrates that this school isn't aside the world but on the contrary that their words tell about what the future students will be
