This paper is primarily concerned with the use of spatiotemporal metaphor in English. In particular, the interpretations of spatiotemporal metaphors in a nativized variety of English, Singapore English, will be examined. On the basis of morphosyntax, Singapore English and English spatiotemporal metaphors do not differ. The difference is only apparent in the usage of these terms. This paper examines Chinese influence in the temporal interpretations of English and show that there is substrate influence from Chinese languages on the interpretations of Singapore English spatiotemporal terms.

This article examines current ELT in the Bulgarian cultural context and suggests a possible path it may take in the future. It highlights the characteristic features of English pedagogy in Bulgaria and identifies a monocentric approach to the English language, i.e. one which views English as monolithic and homogeneous rather than as pluralistic and diverse. The main argument is that such an approach runs counter to the current pluralistic views about the nature of English and its pedagogy, as well as to the linguistic needs of present-day Bulgarian learners of English, who are increasingly likely to use the language for communication with speakers of different world Englishes. Therefore, this contribution argues for the need to broaden the focus of traditional English pedagogy in Bulgaria so as to incorporate the linguistic, cultural and functional diversity of English. It proposes a pedagogical framework, suitable for tertiary advanced-level education, in which students pass through three stages when encountering the variability of the language (awareness-raising, experiential and analytic stage), and gives examples of specific learning activities which can be employed at each stage.

In the past 30 years, China's open-door policy and rapid economic growth have been accelerating English as a foreign language (hereafter EFL) teaching in an unprecedented way. To facilitate the learning process for students, English teachers in China have switched from using traditional ways of teaching English to adopting a variety of modern English teaching methods from the West (Rao, 2002). Of all these imported methods, Communicative Language Teaching (hereafter CLT) is the most popular and widespread one in Chinese schools. However, conflicts have appeared in the process of this transformation. On the one hand, the Chinese government and education administrators are aware of the importance of English communicative competence as contact with foreigners speaking English increases. On the other hand, some problems in the current English teaching prevent teachers from getting their students involved in the communicative activities in their teaching process. They still cling to the traditional teaching methods and techniques. In this paper, I trace the development of EFL teaching in China, analyze some difficulties and challenges that EFL teachers and learners must face, and look at the prospects for EFL teaching in China in the future.

The increasing use of English as a medium of education (EME) in higher education has attracted an impressive amount of applied linguistic research, reflecting the pivotal role language plays in teaching and learning processes. This, however, stands in sharp contrast to the equally prolific body of research into the internationalisation of higher education (IoHE) in which the complex linguistic reality of EME - and its potential role in the internationalised classroom - is given little attention. Reviewing the current research and policy agenda, the authors find that the current policy climate offers similar opportunities for conceptual expansion of IoHE and EME, which calls for greater integration of the two fields of study. The authors argue for an interdisciplinary approach, recognising, and more holistically exploiting, the potential of language at the intersection of dynamic and multilayered policies and practices in twenty-first century internationalised higher education.

The first section of this overview starts by briefly sketching the state of the school education system in India. We then note that English-medium private schools are often not much better than government schools (whether English-medium or not). The second section argues that English-medium education in India must be seen in the larger context of a mother-tongue-medium education. English-medium-only education in India gives poor educational results, and it increases social inequalities. The way forward lies in a mother-tongue-based multilingual education that includes English.

Abstract The article discusses ELF-aware pedagogy as a possible way to integrate English as a lingua franca (ELF) in English language classrooms and explores the extent to which task-based language teaching (TBLT) could contribute to this end. ELF-aware pedagogy involves enriching teaching practices with appropriate metalinguistic and reflective activities that help learners develop as competent ELF users. The article makes the case that, when viewed from an ELF-aware perspective, TBLT may provide a coherent methodological framework for creating an authentic communicative environment in the classroom, within which the learners may develop as ELF communicators. To provide an example of how this could be achieved in practice, the author presents an ELF-aware task she has designed and taught in her own classroom. The task integrates metalinguistic and reflective elements and focuses on promoting the learners’ pragmatic competence and sense of themselves as true owners of English.

AbstractIt has been proposed that differences in digit span performance between English and Spanish speakers are due to the greater number of syllables per digit in the Spanish language. To test this hypothesis, we studied the performance of 30 English- and 30 Spanish-speaking elders on the Wcchsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) Digit Span Subtest, a modified digit span test that was linguistically comparable for both languages, and the Corsi Block Test. Consistent with previous reports, we found that English speakers scored significantly higher than Spanish speakers on WAIS-R Digit Span Forward. Group differences were reduced on the modified Digit Span Forward, but remained significant. English and Spanish speakers scored comparably on Digit Span Backward (WAIS-R and modified) and Visual Span. We suggest that although differences in the number of syllables per digit string are in part responsible for the lower performance of Spanish speakers on Digit Span Forward, cultural and educational issues also contribute to the observed differences between English and Spanish speakers. Educative Curriculum Materials (ECMs) are teaching materials that have the dual function of providing learning activities to students and providing professional development to the teachers that use them. Answering a call for professional development opportunities, and with input from English teachers in rural Nicaraguan schools, the designers created a set of ECMs aligned with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education Curriculum. When physically bringing the completed materials to educators in rural Nicaraguan schools became impossible, it was determined that the delivery system had to change. With support from a team of undergraduate computer science students, the ECMs were transferred to a digital delivery system, the new format allowing for even more English teaching and learning support. This paper shares how a revolution in Nicaragua and failed project ultimately led to the creation of the English teaching app Reaching for English.

Based on needs analysis, this paper studies the needs of Business English (BE) learners on acquiring business terms. An online questionnaire was conducted on full-time undergraduate business English majors and international business majors in the School of International Business English at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and 254 valid questionnaires were collected. The finding shows that a customized specialized C-E/E-C electronic dictionary is in great need during the 4-year-learning process of BE learners, while disadvantages of existing C-E/E-C electronic dictionaries are spotted. According to the data collected from the survey, author discuss the disadvantages of existing Chinese-English/English-Chinese (C-E/E-C) electronic dictionaries and tries to put forward improvement suggestions on building a specialized C-E/E-C electronic dictionary from the perspective of BE learners. This research will help business-English- term teaching and specialized C-E/E-C electronic dictionary compiling.

For contributing to the inherent dynamic nature of society, things are always moving, developing, growing and changing. Education is fundamental in responding to the societal change therefore, change is inevitable in education too. The immediate context of this paper is Punjab (Pakistan) followed by the implementation process of the most recent change in secondary school National Curriculum for English. The focus revolves around the questions; ‘to what extent the secondary school English teachers were involved in planning and designing English curriculum change (CC2006), and what the contextual conditions secondary school teachers were provided enabling them to enact CC2006 effectively? The study adopted a mixed method approach. The quantitative data was collected by administering questionnaire towards 243 secondary school English teachers followed by conducting the case studies of four secondary schools for gathering the qualitative data. The findings revealed that teachers were seldom consulted during planning or design phase of CC2006.

Given the unprecedented spread of English, native English speakers (NESs) have been estimated to number 508 million by 2050 (Graddol, 1997: 27), while a bold estimation of speakers of English is 2 billion by 2050 (Crystal, 2008: 4–5). The international demographic profile of English presents a scenario whereby the development of English depends on how this language is used by non-native English speakers (NNESs), who are obviously in the majority for English use (e.g. Brumfit, 2001: 116; Crystal, 2008: 6; Graddol, 1997: 10; Mauranen, 2012; Seidlhofer, 2011: 7–8). While the importance of the number of English speakers globally is acknowledged, English in China remains a particularly interesting area for linguists. Not only English is widely learned in China, but also Chinese speakers of English are increasingly involved in intercultural encounters. In Graddol's (1997, 2006) discussion of the future of English, a comprehensive account is put forward about China, a country that has statistical significance for the development of English, given its large population of people who know English and its economic development. As Crystal (2008: 5) notes: [I]f India is the significant factor in relation to second-language speakers (in the sense of countries where English has some sort of special status), then China is surely the corresponding factor in relation to foreign-language speakers (in the sense of countries where the language has no official status). In this sense, it would seem that China will play an important role in shaping the profile of English use in the future. If this is an acceptable hypothesis, the development of English in China has implications for the future world of English use.

This article focuses on Old English derivational paradigms with adjectival bases and assesses their productivity and degree of recursivity. On the theoretical side, the article puts forward the concept of paradigmatic productivity in order to gauge the relative importance of lexical categories as bases of word-formation. On the descriptive side, the analysis identifies the basic adjectives of Old English, gathers their derivatives, assigns a base of derivation to each deadjectival lemma and lists the instances of recursive word-formation. The main conclusions of the research are that the derivational paradigms of adjectives are not as productive as the ones based on strong verbs and that recursive formations result from affixation far more often than from compounding and zero derivation.

AbstractSince its conception, Cognitive Linguistics as a theory of language has been enjoying ever increasing success worldwide. With quantitative growth has come qualitative diversification, and within a now heterogeneous field, different – and at times opposing – views on theoretical and methodological matters have emerged. The historical “prototype” of Cognitive Linguistics may be described as predominantly of mentalist persuasion, based on introspection, specialized in analysing language from a synchronic point of view, focused on West-European data (English in particular), and showing limited interest in the social and multimodal aspects of communication. Over the past years, many promising extensions from this prototype have emerged. The contributions selected for the Special Issue take stock of these extensions along the cognitive, social and methodological axes that expand the cognitive linguistic object of inquiry across time, space and modality.

Vocabulary acquisition is the premise of learning language. In English learning, college students always feel perplexed and painful on acquiring English vocabulary. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze and reveal negative factors in English vocabulary acquisition of college students and put forward some countermeasures. Compared with previous studies, this paper comprehensively analyzes most of negative factors on English vocabulary acquisition and according to collected data, more concrete and practical measures are put forward to help college students acquire English vocabulary. Interviews and questionnaires are conducted in turn. Interviews with college students and teachers shows there are many factors that have an negative impact on vocabulary acquisition such as the influence of Chinese and culture, individual motivation, learning habits and teaching model. Questionnaire shows the difficulties and learning habits most students had as well as English teaching model they desire. Through questionnaire, it is found that low motivation is the most influential factor and there is a relationship between students’ grade and their motivation. At the end of this paper, some countermeasures are proposed to help students learn vocabulary more effectively.

157 children aged 10 years and 154 university students aged 22 to 25 years were divided into four groups based on their principal home language (Malay, English, Mandarin, or Hokkien). Each subject was tested on forward digit span and articulation speed for numbers in English and in one of the other three languages. Analysis suggested that both speed of articulation and fluency in language affected the digit span value.

Kinship terms were an important part in communication, existing in all countries in the world. With the development of cultural exchange, the comparison and analysis between Chinese and English kinship terms becomes more vital and necessary. The author will put forward some suggestions about Chinese kinship terms teaching for international students based on comparison and analysis between the two language systems. This paper will be divided into five parts. Firstly, the author will introduce the concept, content, present situation, research methods and significance of kinship terms. Secondly, the author will pay attention to point out their features and classification. Thirdly, the author will describe their similarities and differences. Fourthly, the author will put forward some suggestions about Chinese teaching for foreigners. Finally, the author will make a summary and point out the limitation in the paper.

In this paper, the current research situation of academic English is reviewed. Nigeria is a highly multiethnic and multilingual African country that speaks over 500 indigenous languages and two official languages, English and French, some of which are taught and learned at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education. This descriptive study has attempted to discuss the state of language education and related issues in the education sector, involving the mother tongue, English, French and Arabic languages. The paper elucidates a few omissions in the National Policy on Education (NPE) and other factors that militate against effective implementation of the language curriculum such as negative perception, inadequate teaching staff and instructional resources, falling students' enrolment and performance, year abroad challenges, lack of funds and controversies generated by debates on a good lingua franca, etc. Based on the findings and their implications for achieving the objectives of the NPE, some recommendations have also been made for a way forward, for example, the need to review the existing NPE and language curriculum, implement trilingual education, compulsory and free basic education, provide sufficient funds, constitute internal quality assurance committees, carry out research and publish standard textbooks for pupils and students, and create umbrella associations of language teachers at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education.
