The thesis outlines the development of a design activity and toolkit for connected devices, which provide opportunities for social impact through technical creativity. Statistically, girls place higher value on social impact than their male counterparts, while they see less how engineering can have relevant social impact. These two factors contribute to girls tend to losing interest in STEM, often during middle school, so a mindset change is desirable to achieve a motivational and thus educational effect. Creative, innovative engineering activities with perceived social impact may motivate middle and high school girls and build their confidence in their ability to impact people's lives with technology they create. This work tests this hypothesis using different forms of a design activity that enables students to collaboratively build personal and wearable smart devices. Examples of creations based upon this design toolkit include connected medical bracelets, physical activity monitoring and other devices. Design requirements for intrinsically motivating and engaging experiences are derived from literature and practical examples in psychology, behavior and education research. A creative experience is based on these frameworks and is prototyped to test engagement, attraction, mindset change and other parameters with adolescent girls. This offers new working methods for the human-centered design process around complex systems design. Building on focus group experiments and experience testing, a hardware toolkit is developed, which combines modular sensing devices with a wirelessly connected cloud-based programming application. Sensors include accelerometers, temperature and pulse sensors. A multi-instance implementation of IBM's Node-Red interface is adapted and customized to form the basis of an interactive, audio-graphical program and application editor. The realization of this toolkit allowed for conducting experimental workshops and for quantifying an increase in participants' self-efficacy and interest in design and engineering as a result of the intervention. A fundamental change in many girls' mindset was observed in multiple experiments with the prototype systems, regarding both creative self-efficacy and engineering perception. Girls who initially thought of themselves as "not creative" were able to contribute viable, innovative ideas when they were introduced to the toolkit concept. Once equipped with adequate tools, ideas could form and come to surface. An important finding from experimental workshops was was that even girls with extensive prior STEM or coding experience showed a significant increase in their self-efficacy in using technology for social impact. The opportunity to impact a range of personally relevant areas adds purpose and meaning to existing skills. In the same experiments, interest in an engineering career also increased to a significant degree. In a separate analysis, the effect of instruction style on self-efficacy and motivation is investigated. It is shown that it is critical to encourage participants to reflect on the social impact of their creation in order to convey a relevant real-world experience ("I enjoyed it because I made something useful"). Based on workshop findings, detailed feature requirements specific to the toolkit are identified and implemented over multiple iterative design stages. A web platform that allows students to share, collaborate on and interact with each other's projects is developed to provide means for long-term engagement beyond the experimental workshop settings. This work contributes research methodology for quantifying the success of motivational interventions. Observed sensitivities and input gathered by participants inform design principles for similar educational experiences.

The Indian transport sector, one of the largest transport networks in the world, faces some serious issues. These may be identified as follows: * Unmet demand for service and infrastructure * Conflicting responsibilities * Inadequate resource mobilization * Poor Asset Management * Inadequate imposition of accountability Increasing the level of private participation in transport sector is one of the possible solutions to solve these problems. At present, private participation in the transport sector in India is low and generally restricted to small projects. Although various steps have been taken to attract the private sector participation in transport sector in India, various indirect and direct constraints exist in its implementation. Indirect constraints include low economic growth, higher poverty rate and high population growth rate. The direct constraints include planning and the institutional issues, methodological or procedural issues, financial constraints, social and the political constraints. In order to alleviate these constraints various steps can be taken. At the planning and the institutional level, India needs to develop a strategic planning network. At the legal and the regulatory level, there is a need for well-drafted laws and regulations related to private sector participation. Also, the amount of government support needs to be clearly defined for the toll road projects in India. Traffic forecasting techniques should be improved, and the government should promote public acceptance for private participation in transport sector.

Ritter, Monique. "A review of causes for the relative unequal participation of women in science, engineering and technology and initiatives." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71861.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Current literature reveals that men and women do not participate in the science, engineering and technology (SET) sector on equal grounds – not qualitatively (access) or qualitatively (ease of participation). It is important that women have access to and actively participate in science; they make up more than half of the world’s population and gender equality enhances a country’s economic growth and competitiveness. Furthermore, the focus should extend further than advocating for equal access to SET to actively promoting increased participation by women. Women bring a distinctive quality to SET precisely because of their gender. They are able to increase overall SET participation numbers and positively contribute to the quality and agenda of science. This study used the pipeline theory and lifecycle approach as theoretical bases to investigate the causes for unequal participation and reviewed initiatives aimed at increasing and facilitating the participation of women in SET. Identified causes include unequal access, male-dominated nature of science, tensions of reconciling professional and private life, differences in recognition and reward, and lack of female representation in leadership. The primary methodology used was a documentary analysis study design, consisting primarily of desktop literature searches and categorization. An initiative summary framework was used to summarise and code 123 identified initiatives into an initiatives summary database. Findings were both positive and negative. The study found that women in many cases are on equal footage with their male counterparts and can manage a healthy work-life balance if provided with the necessary support but many women still describe a male-dominated work environment that is exclusionary. Findings indicate that, although decreasing, there is still gender bias in recognition and reward and that female scientists underutilise financial rewards. Women in SET do not receive equal pay for equal work and there is a distinct lack of female representation in SET leadership bodies such as academies of sciences, scientific boards and publication boards of academic journals. The most common modes of intervention are policy interventions, gender mainstreaming, advocacy and interest groups, and provision of training and support. The majority of initiatives are aimed at bringing about change at a national/policy level and are driven primarily by government and academia with academia playing an important middleman role - assisting and guiding government in the design and roll-out of policies on the one hand and meeting the human resource needs of industry on the other. Although government and academia have done well in driving initiatives that increase the participation of women in SET at both school and tertiary level, more needs to be done by industry to drive the facilitation of participation. There are very few initiatives addressing the retention of women in SET; this is linked to the lack of attention to returners as a specific target group. The study concludes that the majority of countries are succeeding in closing the participation gap in terms of access or horizontal gender equality, but that vertical segregation (focusing on recognition, reward and advancement), although acknowledged, remains a mostly unaddressed challenge.

This document compiles a highly discussed issue present in many cities of the developing world today; it brings forward the importance of facing the challenges that slums create to today’s cities and the mechanisms used for tackling such challenge. The study focuses on the use of Participatory Planning approaches in the context of slum upgrading, giving the reader an insight to the advantages and challenges that such an approach has. It is built around a case study in the city of Medellin, Colombia where there has been a strong political will and commitment to implement programs and projects in the poorest areas of the city. This initiative emerged as a need to tackle deep rooted problems present in the slum areas of the city that together with other issues placed Medellin as the most dangerous city of the world during the 1990s.
For tackling such a problem, the local Administration (2003-2007) created a slum upgrading model called “PUI - Proyecto Urbano Integral” (Integral Urban Project) which is said to be based on “participatory planning” and “slum upgrading” principles. The results of the first project following the “PUI Model”, the “PUI Noriental”, have been promoted by the Administration as highly successful and been considered as a model for slum upgrading both nationally and internationally. Therefore, there is the need to acknowledge and critically asses the PUI Model by evaluating its principles, its methods and its results having a deeper understanding and assessment of the concepts behind such an approach; specially since it has been internationally recognized that there is a lack of cases in which the ideals of participation and slum upgrading are put in practice.
In this order of ideas, the principles, methods and tools of the “PUI Model” and its implementation in the “PUI Noriental”, are evaluated based on international theories and experiences dealing with the topic. By doing so, it is shown the close link between the principles of participation and the very nature of slum upgrading processes. As well it is brought forward the need to implement such kind of a approaches in cities presenting problems with slum areas. The results of the evaluation show that even though there is a strong political will towards using principles of participatory planning and slum upgrading approaches in Medellin, there is still a high need to have a deeper understanding of such concepts and the way they can be implemented. Nevertheless, it is shown that even with these shortcomings the significant outcomes produced by the PUI Noriental are a clear example that participation in the context of slum upgrading is a strong tool to bring benefits to the people of such areas.

This project discusses the strategic advantages of encouraging female workforce participation in SET roles within global technology companies. Three publicly traded companies - Netflix, Facebook and Red Hat, Inc. - are compared utilizing self-reported diversity numbers to see the varying levels of women in those workplaces. The diversity policies and benefits programs of these three companies are discussed as well as available corporate statements regarding workforce diversity policies. Finally, utilizing information from programs proven to increase women’s participation and retention within SET roles, suggestions are provided, namely sponsorship of women in the workplace.

Recently, governments have leveraged a variety of new technologies, especially new social media, to create an open government, or Government 2.0 that is transparent in its policies and gives its citizens the ability to collaborate and participate. Social media has been known for its ability to instantly connect a decentralized group of users; the ease at which the technology communicates makes the results of such technologies unpredictable and elusive. Despite television's reputation as a "passive" medium, I demonstrate that Taiwanese political call-in shows have been a successful form of credible and "controlled participation" for over a decade. With the inception of multi-party elections, these talk shows have served a purpose beyond getting good ratings and bringing in profits for the networks; they provide politicians and viewers alike an opportunity to participate. To understand the participatory culture, I studied Taiwanese political talk shows as a media system by analyzing the style and content of Taiwanese talk shows, as well as the social, cultural, legal, political, and economic institutions, practices, and protocols that shape the technology. The call-in talk shows transforms the medium into what John Gee calls an "affinity space," a term often used to describe the communities built using social media. Even with the culture of openness on Taiwanese political talk shows, the value system by which television is constructed and limited interactivity of the technology preserve the credibility content, and create an effective blueprint for bidirectional interaction between the government and the public.

Sustainable infrastructure that is used and maintained by communities over time, and resilient to hazards, is sorely needed in developing countries where natural disasters cause disproportionate damages and mortality as well as impede development efforts. Shelter is universally recognized as a foundational element of disaster recovery; and while its ability to provide protection from the elements is a core function, it also affords broader social and economic benefits. Unfortunately, conventional approaches in post-disaster shelter reconstruction focus primarily on rapid and recognizable results over long-term outcomes, perpetuating pre-existing vulnerabilities and failing to provide acceptable standards of service. There exists a need to better understand how shelter recovery processes employed by stakeholders lead to eventual infrastructure system outcomes. This research longitudinally analyzed 19 humanitarian shelter projects following Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines over a three-year period, seeking to answer the overarching research question of what combinations of coordination, stakeholder participation and training across project delivery phases lead to resilient and sustainable community infrastructure systems? A multi-method approach consisting of case study methods and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was employed to analyze the impact of combinations of project processes in leading to infrastructure outcomes. This research (1) identified key factors influencing inter-organizational coordination in post-disaster contexts; (2) identified types of household participation that arise in shelter projects and analyzed their impact on project outcomes; (3) identified methods of construction training used in shelter projects and their impact on household knowledge acquisition; and (4) analyzed combinations of coordination, participation, and training across the planning, design, and construction phases of shelter projects that led to infrastructure resilience and sustainability, in isolation and combination. The results contribute to understanding of shelter processes and organizing structures necessary for resilient and sustainable systems, building theory of reconstruction process pathways. Practically, findings can aid practitioners identify more effective modalities of delivering shelter assistance in post-disaster humanitarian response.

An interactive, online geographic information system (GIS) was developed to enhance the involvement of stakeholders in the public participation processes of site selection issues in the marine environment. Displaying educational material and interactive maps of relevant data, this new tool allows users to input personal preferences for the criteria they value in the siting decision, and produces a map showing the most and least suitable sites according to the user's weighting of the criteria. Current decision-making processes focus on finding an optimum solution from a number of alternatives using an objective analysis of the criteria, but are often inaccessible to many stakeholders, and do not consider the fairness of the outcome to the stakeholders. This tool is intended to educate stakeholders and enhance their involvement in the public decision-making process. To demonstrate the interactive, online GIS concept, a website called eSite was assembled, using as its case study the hypothetical issue of siting marine reserves within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Marine resource protection is a controversial issue with many stakeholders in New England, where fishing in the Gulf of Maine has a long history, and human activities have had significant impacts on the marine environment. Marine reserves are an emerging tool for protecting marine ecosystems and enhancing marine resources, and the siting of reserves is an important emerging issue. Pre and post-surveys were conducted as part of the demonstration site to evaluate eSite. It was shown to be effective at increasing understanding of marine reserves and was perceived as a useful tool in improving the decision-making process.

The lack of role models is a hindrance for aspiring Black women engineers and their decisions to continue choosing engineering. The lack of representation of Black women in industry similarly presents obstacles for their career advancement. Because neither role models or representation can be increased in retrospect, it is imperative to study and highlight the visibility of the Black women engineers currently practicing engineering and bring awareness to their career experiences in industry to better inform recruitment and retention efforts. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study is to describe the varied career orientations of Black women working as engineers in Tech and to link their career orientations to their career outcomes. To support broadening participation efforts, this research uses an anti-deficit approach to examine the career mobility patterns of Black women working in computing and engineering roles in the Tech industry. Using a curated secondary data set based on social media artifacts and user generated data, this study characterizes the different career motivations, strategies, and points of transition in the careers of a diverse sample of Black women. In efforts to disaggregate Black women's engineering and computing career experiences, ten perspectives on how and why Black women move into, around and out of roles in the tech industry were examined. The analysis revealed that participants' career orientations were differentially motivated by needs, talents and or values which influenced how participants made career related decisions. Additionally, both physical and psychological mobility of participants was examined and then compared in the cross-case analysis to derive six unique career archetypes that were useful in characterizing the career challenges and aspirations in participants' lived career experience. This study aims to normalize "non-traditional" career trajectories and inform the next generation of Black women interested in Tech on the different way(s) to approach and achieve career success and satisfaction in engineering and computing fields. In addition, study findings can be leveraged by human resource personnel and career managers to anticipate common career challenges based on individual employee career orientations, and align better reward structures and policies to support a wider range of employee career outlooks. The study emphasizes the strategies and outlooks critical for Black women's success and satisfaction to support their continued participation in the engineering and computing workforce.

Many universities across the United States have been experiencing an increased demand for computer science majors. Adjusting curriculum to meet demand runs the risk of damaging efforts to increase the diversity of the computer science workforce. To manage growth and increase the representation of women and underrepresented minorities (students who are not white or East Asian) in the field, we must first understand who currently studies computer science, and factors that lead to their success in the major. Universities with general first-year engineering programs present an opportunity for addressing some of the barriers that have traditionally discouraged women and underrepresented minorities from pursuing computer science. In particular, these programs could provide early positive experiences with computer programming which encourage more students to consider computer science as a possible major. To better understand how experiences during students’ first-year transition to college may impact decisions to major in computer science, I conducted studies to explore who enters computer science, and how they succeed in the major, as well as how students experience programming instruction in an introductory engineering course. All studies share the same context: a large public research institution with a general first-year engineering program. Results indicate that women are leaving computer science at all points of the curriculum, contributing to a reduced representation of women earning CS degrees. In contrast, underrepresented minority students and students with parents who did not receive a college degree, make up a higher percentage in the group graduating with a CS degree than in the group who declare CS as their first major.

Under the broad context of decarbonization of the energy sector, commercial buildings are well-suited for providing ancillary services to the electricity grid and poised to transform from passive consumers to active electricity market participants. A data-driven multi-zonal thermal response model is formulated and fit to EnergyPlus simulation data from a Department of Energy Small Office Reference Commercial Building for the months of June, July and August. When validated and tested against EnergyPlus simulation data, the thermal response model performs well. The thermal response model is then used in a co-optimization of energy and ancillary provision for a small office building with a variable air volume system from [9] using summer wholesale electricity and ancillary services prices from ISO-NE. Under six different price cases, the individual small office building provides maximum hourly regulation and spinning reserve capacities of 3.2 and 4.4 kW respectively and daily total regulation and spinning reserve capacities of 51 and 46 kW respectively. When scaled up over similar building stock in New England, small office buildings can provide up to 9.5% of ISO-NE's daily regulation requirement and 8% of the daily spinning reserves requirement. From an economic perspective, a small office building's potential summer ancillary services' revenues are not sufficient to drive investment in installation of a building automation system, variable air volume system and associated metering. However, buildings may invest in the necessary equipment for energy cost reductions and to participate in other demand response programs. Increasing building participation rates in ancillary services markets requires addressing the principal-agent problem, building-specific concerns such as program controllability and convenience and targeted policies aimed at increasing availability of clear aggregator-enabled building participation avenues.

User participation is argued to be the solution for all issues regarding system development. However, researchers within this field have different views of the impact of involving users in this process. Even though the literature utilized in this thesis can be perceived as old, the author identified it to be the most frequently referred to by others. Thereby, the quality of the literature remains high. The digital development has contributed to a better technical understanding in general, but the question is if this has affected the user participation? The problem investigated was therefore: What is the view of user participation today, and what problems and opportunities are associated with it? The purpose of this study was to investigate today’s practice of user participation. More specifically, what problems and opportunities that are faced by companies and suppliers. This study was based on a previous thesis conducted by Agnes Hedberg & Sanna Järlstig (2016) from Linköping University, who perceived their own findings as biased and vague, due to their low number of interviewees. Therefore, the author of this thesis determined to triple the number of interviews to examine if the outcome changed. Moreover, the findings from the empirical data were also compared with the literature, in order to analyze if the current perception of user participation differs from the previous one. The result of this study demonstrates that the involvement of users in the development, was perceived as essential. The companies argued that the development process was costly and time consuming in general, but not to the same extent as the literature did. On the contrary, the interviewees emphasized the importance of not excluding the users, since their involvement rather added value to the process. This study’s results confirmed many of Hedberg & Järlstig (2016) findings, by highlighting the similarities between the two theses.
