Nowadays the notion of commitment is at the heart of the great majority of researches devoted to the construction of themodern State in France, the protestant nobility and the wars of religion. This thesis is part of this dynamic current of research in history – and more generally in the human sciences – but it is on a time spanning almost two centuries that it offers to analyse the mechanisms, forms, means and consequences of the political and religious commitments of a well-known house’s members, but paradoxically little studied, the Coligny-Châtillon. In the middle of the 15th century, Jean III de Coligny abandoned the clientele of the duke of Burgundy or the duke of Savoy and settled in his domain of Châtillon-sur-Loing to devote himself entirely to the French king’s service. Pursuing this crucial commitment, his descendants’ succeeded in getting closer to the royal power in only two generations. This privileged position was nevertheless called into question when François d’Andelot, Gaspard de Coligny and then Odet de Châtillon publicly pledged their support for the Huguenot Cause. Thus, the fast degradation of peace in the French Kingdom echoes the inexorable fall of the Châtillon brothers in the sovereigns’ favour ; which favour their descendants’ would strive to recover completely for nearly eighty years. So many commitments that propelled the Coligny from mountains of Bresse and Revermont to the King’s Council ; which gradually shifted them from the status of favourites to that of “criminels de lèse-majesté” ; and which finally led them from the gibbet of Montfaucon to the royal necropolis of Saint-Denis

The National Socialism represents a gloomy period of German history. It has been the subject of numerous controversies in academic circles. Initially considered a taboo in post-war society, it was better accepted officially in the following decades, so much so that a culture of remembrance saw the light of day in the late eighties. This remarkable sign of willingness to beself-critical is to be praised. Nonetheless, it never truly managed to penetrate the private sphere : that is why the Nazi past still remains a painful subject in the families of our respondents, who see themselves as Kriegsenkel. But who are they? Kriegsenkel literally means “The grandchildren of the War”. The term refers to the grandparents who were involved in the Hitlerian regime. The Kriegsenkel, most of whom were born between 1960 and 1980 identify with this conceptby choice. It also involves the idea of a transgenerational transmission of trauma stemming from the second conflict. At the turn ofthe 2000s Kriegsenkel talking groups emerged in German-speaking countries, which was an unprecedented phenomenon. This study presents the results of a qualitative survey of the Kriegsenkel whose family history was marked by the Third Reich. The descendants of leading Nazi dignitaries are however not included in our sample group. Our aim is to explore the fallouts of the National Socialism in the biography of respondents through the prism of their religious, political and societal involvements. The survey reveals how memory, History and involvement fit together

Much has been said recently about the decline in both political and non-political civic participation in the United States. Many American religious congregations, however, continue to stand strong as voluntary associations connecting people with the political and civic life in our country. This paper explains the role that religious congregations can play as promoters of civic engagement. Specifically, it describes the mechanisms by which religious congregations can provide what I call civic resources to their members, resources members utilize to participate in other forms of civic activity outside of their congregation. These resources can be broken down into three main categories. Civic skills are the communication and organizational abilities that an individual can draw upon to make participation more effective. Congregations provide opportunities for members to gain experience using such skills when becoming involved in church governance or in organizing church committees to take on special tasks or put on special events. Social infrastructure captures the value of the social networks and organizational resources available to members of a congregation. The tight-knit social community within a church serves as an effective network to spread relevant information or recruit volunteers for any collective activity. Finally, there are a number of psychological resources a congregation can bring to bear on an individual. Oftentimes the religious teachings of congregations encourage members to adopt civic-minded values and attitudes that serve as a strong motivation to participate

There has been both praise and vilification of religion's role in shaping democratic citizens. By focusing on individual differences, religious motivations can help explain the complex relationship between religion and good citizenship, especially concerning the important topics of political engagement and prejudice. This dissertation will demonstrate that in order to understand the connection between religion and democratic citizenship, we must consider people's religious motivations. We must go beyond traditional approaches that only consider people's beliefs and behaviors. Religious motivation is a powerful measurement tool providing a richer framework than traditional measures of religiosity when answering a variety of questions regarding democratic citizenship. It is also a unique measure of individual difference with independent effects going beyond measures of personality, open-mindedness, ideology, and religiosity. The goal of this dissertation is twofold. First, it will establish religious motivation as an important measure that can greatly aid our understanding of the relationship between religion and democratic citizenship. Second, this dissertation will demonstrate how religious motivation can clarify religion's relationship with two specific measures of democratic citizenship: prejudice and political engagement. To meet these goals, this dissertation employs nationally representative surveys including a unique survey-experiment to provide evidence of religious motivations' important explanatory power. The findings suggest it is not what religious service you attend, or even how often you attend, but the motivation for being religious that best explains the level of political engagement and prejudice.

The thesis examines the relationship between religion and politics from the Spinozist critical perspective. In terms of form, discursive and critical reasoning is opposed to faith which can be characterised as a non-analytical certainty taking the form of revelations. In terms of content however, reason and faith are united by their shared content a sense of the Absolute. In these circumstances reason is able to promote religious feeling, the finite becoming infinite thanks to meditative thought ;conversely, faith can provide a basis for rationality. Nonetheless, is it not possible to see this rationality of faith as a denial of that which specifically defines faith ? Spinoza's aim was to separate philosophy from theology so as to liberate thought and freedom of expression. As a matter of fact, the analysis of rational understanding and its relations with theological knowledge gives us a better grasp of what differentiates the theologian and philosopher on the one hand, and the theologian and politician on the other. Spinoza's 'conatus' should allow us to overcome subordination and prejudice, taking us toward liberation and the salvation of society
Hunter, Evan R. "Stakeholder perspectives of contextual engagement of PhD programs at select evangelical seminaries in the Majority World." Thesis, Trinity International University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3685509.
This research utilized qualitative methods to explore how students and faculty perceive the contextual engagement of the PhD program at three select theological institutions in the Majority World. This research has value, as such engagement is both an explicit and implicit value of doctoral programs located in the Majority World. Over the last decade, the number of PhD programs established to serve the church in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East and the number of students in them has risen rapidly. The research is descriptive in nature and not an attempt to evaluate the level of success or merit of such programs. Rather, it assumed that each program engages its context and sought to identify common themes as well as areas of convergence and divergence as indicated by faculty and student stakeholders.
The study consisted of thirty-six interviews. Sets of six faulty members and six doctoral students at each of three seminaries located in the Majority World were asked to share from their experiences in the doctoral program. The participating schools were Africa International University in Nairobi, Kenya; South Asian Institute for Advanced Christian Studies in Bangalore, India and Seminario Teológico Centroamericano, Guatemala City, Guatemala. The study asked participants to describe how the PhD program engages the context including classroom teaching and learning tasks, course outputs, including dissertations, and other non-formal aspects of the doctoral experience.
The findings revealed three primary categories of contextual engagement described by the faculty and students across the three contexts. The participants first described how the intentional design of the programs including explicit and implicit components of the curriculum engage the context. Secondly, students and faculty addressed issues of worldview and cultural values. Contextual insiders provide a depth of understanding not available outside of the context. Intracultural critique ensures contextually engaged aspects are improved through peer interactions. Finally, student and faculty participants found adult learning practices very helpful to overcome conditioned dependency on traditional education models. Participants perceived these practices as particularly helpful for engaging the local context.

Starting from the question : what cultural matters do Lebanese people use in their free time ? This PhD thesis relies on the idea of the existence of a relationship between the structure of society and cultural practices, developed by Pierre Bourdieu in the theory of cultural legitimacy. The hybrid structure of society, a concept borrowed from Melhem Chaoul, constitutes the specificity of the Lebanese context : the existence of a francophone, multicultural and provided with a large diaspora country, as well as the contemporary diffusion of digital practices, raise questions related to the definition of cultural identity. Promoting the concept of « degree of cultural adhesion » seems necessary in order to find an answer. Based on a survey of 1,200 respondents in Lebanon, 120 respondents in France and 36 in depth interviews, the study shows that young people, as opposed to the older ones, tend most towards Western culture and digital practices. The most educated people consume both Lebanese and Western cultural goods simultaneously. As a matter of fact, the consumption of Western cultural goods is facilitated by trilingualism, which is mastered by almost half of the Lebanese. Additionally it has been shown that the regional inequality of the cultural offer is not homologous to a regional inequality of cultural practices. Religious commitment as well as the position in the life cycle impact cultural practices
Fernandes, Vincent John. "Volunteer Motivation, Organizational Commitment, and Engagement| Knights of Columbus Explanatory Case Study." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10748228.
The purpose of this qualitative explanatory single case study was to understand why Knights of Columbus (KofC) volunteers in Ontario, Canada demonstrate motivation, organizational commitment, and engagement. The scope of the study was guided by two main research questions: “Why do KofC members volunteer?” and “How do KofC members combine elements of motivation, organizational commitment, and engagement in their volunteer activity?” The triangulation of participant interviews, observations from KofC general meetings, and online archived documents supported the study’s qualitative methodology that required rich, descriptive data. For feasibility, the population of this study was comprised of KofC volunteers within three councils in Ontario, Canada and 17 KofC members were selected purposively based on age and experience criteria for face-to-face interviews. Transcribed interview data, observational field notes and archival documents were analyzed and coded using NVivo 11 to uncover three emerging themes: living one’s faith, loyalty, and flexibility. The findings indicated that KofC members have alignment between personal and organizational values, intend to follow Biblical scripture to live their faith in the public square, and feel obligated to help others in need. Fraternity and unity were welcomed benefits that KofC members enjoyed while volunteering. KofC provides volunteers with role and task variety, which allows volunteers to choose the activities that suit their interest, skill set, and time commitment. By gaining insights from these themes, organizational leaders can improve their communication to potential and existing volunteers, foster stronger relationships among volunteers, and develop programs that engage volunteers through catered recruitment and retention strategies.
Meekins, Katrina L. "The impact of spiritual intelligence triggers and student engagement with the scriptural story on fourth grade Sunday School learners." Thesis, Capella University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3625905.
Sunday School is of the primary educational setting within the Protestant Christian church for teaching the faith and scriptural stories to children. Traditionally, the Sunday School classroom has utilized a schooling method curriculum that focuses on the logical and linguistic intelligences and seeks to impart scriptural knowledge through a story, an activity, and a craft or game. This study compares this traditional schooling method with that of a multiple intelligences triggered curriculum, especially the spiritual intelligence, curriculum for student engagement with the scriptural story. This study examines these two different curriculums within the fourth grade Sunday School classroom. Six classes were involved in the study; three participated in the traditional curriculum while three participated in the multiple intelligences triggered curriculum. Both curriculums reflected the same scriptural stories, which were taught over a six-week period of time. Following the six-week study, each class participated as a focus group to discuss the learners' experience during the study as well as their understandings of the scriptural stories. After the focus group, one student from each group was selected randomly to participate in an individual interview. Data from this study reflects the student engagement with the scriptural stories as well as the students' excitement about the activities within the curriculum. Activities and tasks within the curriculums illustrate the triggers for the multiple intelligences, especially the spiritual intelligence. Conclusions from the data illustrate that the multiple intelligence triggers, especially the spiritual intelligence triggers, provide for greater student understandings of the scriptural stories.
Oh, Se il. "High Modernity and Multiple Secularities: Various Forms of Religious Non-Affiliation in the United States." Thesis, Boston College, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/1945.
The rapid increase in the number of religious non-affiliates in the United States makes non-affiliation an important issue to study. Traditional secularization theories have explained the overall increase in the number of people who report not belonging to a specific religion, but have not explored the diversity among them. Studies attempting to explain the rise in non-affiliation have been basically descriptive, focusing on sociodemographic characteristics or social networks of religious non-affiliates, examining the effects of cohort, political orientation, parents' religions, and peer religions. There is no comprehensive social theory on the dynamics of religious non-affiliation. In sum, the previous literature requires us to reconsider the theoretical limits of modernity and the unilateral understanding of secularization and suggests a new framework for multiple secularities in accordance with high modernity. In this study, I conceptualize religious non-affiliation as "multiple secularities," creating a new framework that takes into account the existence of various forms of non-affiliation in the United States. Specifically, I identify three types of worldviews (theism, spiritualism, immanent frame) and two categories of institutional religious affiliation (affiliation and non-affiliation). Thus, six forms of belief are considered--affiliated theism, affiliated spiritualism, affiliated positivism, unaffiliated theism, unaffiliated spiritualism, and unaffiliated positivism. Utilizing the 2005 Baylor Religion Survey and the Religion Module of the 2008 International Social Science Survey, this dissertation explores differences among multiple secularities in the U.S. with respect to three dimensions of holistic implications: head, heart, and hand. Findings indicate that there are distinct differences among unaffiliated individuals based on belief types. Compared to unaffiliated spiritualists and unaffiliated positivists, unaffiliated theists place less importance on the role of human agency as compared to divine agency, have lower levels of moral liberalism, are more likely to favor religion when considering the tension between religion and science, more likely to report experiences of being filled with the Spirit, more likely to participate in political associations, but less likely to attend political rallies and demonstrations. Unaffiliated spiritualists have the highest rates of reporting experiences of oneness with the universe and interest in New Age (astrology and alternative medicine), and they are most likely to participate in political rallies or public protests among the unaffiliated individuals. Unaffiliated positivists are most likely to place importance on human agency, and they have the lowest rates of religious and spiritual experiences among the unaffiliated. These findings make several important contributions to the literature. First, they contribute to the recognition of the limits of the `secularization' thesis in a high (or late) modern society such as the United States and provide a new framework for understanding `multiple secularities' by examining interactions between the institutional level of secularity (non-affiliation) and the individual level of secularity (privatization of belief). Second, they confirm the Weberian insight that `elective affinities' exist between worldviews and ideological, experiential, and social aspects of life in a high modern society. Third, they demonstrate that social research should further explore the subdivisions among "unchurched believers" (unaffiliated theists and spiritualists). Fourth, they contribute to the debate on "spiritual individualism" versus "engaged spirituality" by demonstrating that spirituality promotes various forms of social engagement. Finally, this dissertation suggests that contemporary social scientists should recognize the limits of the traditional secularization thesis and face a new conundrum of post-secularity beyond belief types and affiliation types in order to promote social cohesion

This study analyzes the use of audiovisual media in the Evangelical practices of liturgy, teaching, and community engagement. In order to gain a more holistic perspective on the role media plays in these practices, the study focuses on media examples taken from prominent religious institutions. By analyzing these examples through the lens of critical theory, the study reveals aspects where the spectacle trends of our culture has permeated the media produced to help audiences engage in religious practices. Because religion helps people cultivate meaning in their lives, the influence of the spectacle trends on religious practices is important to examine as it has the potential to control that meaning. As a result, the contributions of religious media can become indistinguishable from those of mainstream media. Therefore, critical theory can be a powerful tool to help religious institutions discern where media amplifies meaning in practices and where it becomes a distraction. As the study examines existing content already utilized in Evangelical practices, the impact is compared across the three practices, which better illuminates the overall influence.

The following thesis examines Pieter Bruegel the Elder's religious paintings and audience engagement, as based not solely on the content of the works, but on their formal structure, as well. Vignettes and smaller figure groups within Bruegel's compositions provide the basic structure and platform for an intertextual and intervisual engagement. The religious, social, and political context of the mid-sixteenth century is also considered to help frame the connection between the viewer and the following paintings: Procession to Calvary (1564, Vienna), Sermon of St. John the Baptist (1566, Budapest) and Conversion of St. Paul (1567, Vienna).

Created in 1945, the Catholic Center for French Intellectuals defined itself by what it successively accepted and rejected. Concerned with elevating wordly culture to the level of religious culture, it adopted starting in the late 1940s a more reflective dimension, seeking to establish dialog between modernity and Christianity. It organized, then, original intellectual activities based on interdisciplinarity and dialog with intellectulas, both believers and nonbelievers. This work thus proposes to study the attitude of a specific group within the framework of a double chronology : first, a cultural chronology wherein, between 1945 and 1975, blossomed successive modernities , and a religious chronology marked by the intransigence of Pius XII, the aggiornamento of Vatican II, and the post-Conciliar crisis. It thus places itself at the interface of the cultural and the religious, through the study of the collective itinerary of a specific intelligentsia which, most of time, preferred the stage of expertise, and more rarely opted for commitment. The disappearance of this forum for reflection in the middle of the 1970s underscores at once the crisis of the intellectual model such as it was established following the Second World War, and the implosion of French Catholicism. This work will study the intellectual milieus solicited by the forum for reflection by using the instruments of analysis developed for the study of these milieus, but it will seek just as much to take into account the content of the theological, philosophical, political and even literary reflection formulated during these thirty years. This double analysis will enable us to see the degree to which this intelligentsia opened itself to modernity, while at the same time keeping its originality within the French clergy

My research proposes to bring qualitative knowledge on the paths and modes of religious and political commitments of individuals active within various Muslim associations in Geneva. The objective is to question the meaning given to this activity, linked to the contribution of empirical knowledge. The multiple and binding moral injunctions and the stigmatization of subjects of the historical "Muslim" figure in Europe lead us to ask a central question of research : how this framework of thought and action influences the forms of Mobilization of the actors of Islam? To try to answer this question, we propose to look at the paths of engagement and the life trajectories of the actor-s, their relationship with "visibility" and the Muslim religion and how they express and value their Islam and their presense in the public space

This mixed methods research investigated how young adult alumnae from a Catholic female high school perceive the impact of their high school service experience concerning their "beliefs" about the importance of service, current "engagement" in service, and their beliefs about and engagement with four Catholic Social Teaching principles (life and dignity, care for the poor, solidarity and common good, and rights and responsibilities) related to social justice.
This research draws data from young adult alumnae from a Catholic female single-sex high school in a metropolitan city of the United States. The data collection included a web-based survey (N=131), individual interview (n=9), and school documents review. Catholic theology of the human person, and Catholic social teaching principles served as the conceptual framework for data analysis.
The quantitative data revealed that Catholic high school service program experience positively impacts participants' "beliefs" about the importance of service (65%), and the importance of four Catholic social teaching principles (73%). The qualitative data corroborates with the quantitative findings. However, participants lacked translating their beliefs in to action with only 42% reporting as "engaged" in service. Although a majority of participants (60%) reported as engaged in activities related to four CST principles, in reality only 25% are significantly engaged in service in the past 12 months. Catholic educators are invited to examine their service pedagogy and address factors that contribute to low level of service engagement. Further research is suggested to identify factors that would raise the level of service engagement in alumnae's young adult life.
Mendez, Elizabeth Tamez. "Leadership Development among Youth in Latino Congregations| The Relationship of Religious Participation to Social Service Involvement and Engagement in Leadership Tasks." Thesis, Andrews University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10973409.
Personal observations and anecdotal accounts attest that some of the young people in U.S. Latino churches are developing as leaders within their congregations. This seems to come as a result of the organic or less-formalized leadership development dynamics and practices present within Latino congregations, where leaders often develop by being actively involved in leadership actions without necessarily first following a curriculum of study, completing a training program, or fulfilling a set of theological education requirements. In this way, many are acquiring roles and responsibilities by which they actively contribute towards local congregational and community life, and by which they develop as leaders through hands-on experiences. This less formalized leadership development dynamic in Latino congregations has yet to be empirically studied, as a means to further understand and learn from this unique characteristic that can be helpful to the church at large in our search for how to develop the next generation of leaders. Thus, there is a need to identify, describe, and empirically analyze some of the specific phenomena involved in these observed dynamics within Latino congregations that seem to be contributing towards youths’ leadership development.
Method: Therefore, this descriptive and explanatory ex post facto study examined key congregational practices within Latino churches and the level of participation young people have in these as a means of analyzing the association of both with leadership development. The study drew on existing data collected through the Chicago Latino Congregational Study – Youth Survey (CLCS–YS) of 63 randomly sampled Latino congregations in different Christian denominations: Catholic, Evangelical, Mainline, and Pentecostal. The sample population consisted of 307 Latino youth ages 13 to 19.
After examining the 104 questionnaire items of the CLCS–YS for applicability, 23 were selected to analyze youth’s religious participation, social service involvement, and engagement in leadership tasks, while controlling for demographic characteristics. Aspects of Positive Youth Development (PYD) theory pertaining to youth leadership development provided a means to select and create the variables studied, which were derived from socioreligious descriptions of Latino congregations that are linked to the aforementioned organic leadership dynamics.
Results: The data analysis revealed that youth in Chicago Latino congregations have a high aggregate score for both Religious Participation and Engagement in Leadership Tasks, and both scores increase with their age. Although their aggregate score for Social Service Involvement was found to be low, the frequencies of the reported habits, actions, and behaviors regarding Social Service Involvement indicate that a high percentage of youth are involved in volunteering or social service in and out of their local congregation. A significant relationship was also found between youths’ level of Religious Participation and their level of Social Service Involvement and Engagement in Leadership Tasks, with both scores increasing as their scores in Religious Participation increased.
The results of the individual survey frequencies served to create a contextual description of socioreligious phenomena present in Chicago Latino congregations, as well as a wider reference into the religious habits of Latino youth. The findings support the observations and anecdotal accounts regarding the level of engagement youth have with organic dynamics for leadership development in Latino congregations. Based on PYD theory, the study also provided a proposed set of variables and measurements by which to approach future studies on this topic. Youth congregants are involved in hands-on experiences such as social service projects and exercising leaderships tasks, and they are also engaging very frequently with their supportive religious community. These are all characteristics of ecological contributing contexts which PYD postulates can potentially contribute towards the leadership development of youth, and their continued contribution as leaders in adulthood (Avolio & Vogelgesang, 2011; Murphy & Reichard, 2011).

How can we explain disinterested behaviors and altruistic practices? What are the social logic leading a person to develop and maintain an altruistic behavior? To answer this question, we have chosen to study volunteers in charities. The survey is based on fifty interviews and one year of i participant observation in two associations (Croix-Rouge, Secours Catholique). The fieldwork ! consists of secular and faith-based organizations dealing with homeless people (CCFD, Secours Catholique, Croix-Rouge, Restos du Coeur). At first, we will study the socialization process leading to commit into charity. On the one hand, a process of social regulation will steer the individual to internalize norms and values that predispose to commit to others. On the other hand, a process of social integration will connect and maintain the individual inside the association. In a second step, we will analyze the motivations of our volunteers. Are they interested or altruistic? Within a mechanism of gift, their motivation is built on reciprocity between what they give and what they receive. Finally, our third research axis will detail values and beliefs espoused by our respondents. Which are the implications of religious beliefs and political motivations among those who decided to give some of their time to others ? These are the three areas of research that will lead this exploration to understand, through the example of volunteer charity, the operation of an altruistic practice

The objective of this thesis is to find the socio-religious factors that determine the choice of the political positions in the south Korean Christian churches during the period 1972-1990. In the precedent studies on this theme, the religious doctrine had been regarded as a most influential among the others. Recognizing the relative importance in explanation the determination of the political attitudes in the religious organization, we aimed to fill up the default in the explanation by the organizational factors. We have find out the more relevant factors to explain the divergence which is polarized between the oppositional engagement and social quiescence in the following way: as the social factors, 1) the social conditions of pressure group, 2) the governmental religious policy. As the religious factors, 1) the theological and ecclesiastical tradition, 2) the religious leadership resources, 3) organizational autonomy of religious leaders, 4) ecclesiastical interest, 5) the preference of the faithful

The first decade of the 21st century gave birth to some original and innovative charities in Europe, lead by small groups of young active Muslims. In these organisations, islamic ethics is not only a social cernent, tying strong bonds, but also a motor to volunteers' motivation. With the help of a comprehensive amount of empirical data through an ethnographie approach, this work drafts the process and dynamics of getting involved in thèse Muslim charities. This research analyses how these Muslim volunteers embrace modem cultures in light of islamic practices and values and eventually, how they embody a whole new generation of European citizens, refreshing key concepts such as citizenship and democracy

Is there an internal consistency between the experiences lived out by Simone Weil and her political thought ? In order to grasp her questioning of the conditions of the possibility of freedom, our search starts off with the critique which she wrote on the philosophical and political theories of Marx. It is therefore a matter of analysing the influence that Marx might have had on her, as well as studying the differences which her critique led her to present, and the philosophical principles of which she made use to this effect. One should secondly look at the very essence of the phenomenon of oppression, and hence gauge several perspectives on individual and social freedom, in the wake of what is proposed by this philosophy. Is there a consistency in the political line in which she wanted to place her social and political commitments in order to respond to this problem ? One should, thirdly, examine and get to know the path which led her to religious experience and what she said about supernatural knowledge as the essential component for leading a bearable social life. How do we conceive the relationship between both her religious and political experiences ? Does this approach constitute an opening with regards to her political critique ?

The purpose of this dissertation is to identify persuasive strategies used by religious leaders of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD, in Portuguese) to attract and maintain its members. The theory adopted is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), more specifically, the system of Appraisal and its focus is on Engagement. The selected corpus is made up of 10 texts written and published in Folha Universal News and on web sites managed by the church. Our first aim was to classify the selected texts from a generic point of view, drawing on Brintons (1995) analytical categories for the characterization of sermons. Rhetorical movements and other features of the genre sermon were identified in the corpus. Our next step was to identify and classify, drawing on analytical categories from the Engagement sub-system, the persuasive strategies used in the corpus, by means of which the religious leader discursively constructs a representation of himself and of his interlocutor the member / future member. Our focus was on dialogistic positioning, more specifically on strategies of dialogic expansion and contraction. Analysis of the corpus suggests a constant tension between the construction of authority for the speaker (who mediates between God and members of the church) and an attempt, on the part of the religious leader, at building solidarity with members or prospective members of the church. This translates, in the corpus, as strategies of speaker deletion and a predominance of Attribution, whereby the religious leader authorizes his discourse, drawing on the voices of God, prophets and the Bible. Another characteristic of the corpus is that Attribution is always endorsed, and thus does not allow for alternative discursive positions to be entertained, as tends to be the case in discourses with a high degree of extravocalization. As far as solidarity is concerned, the religious leader tries to involve members or prospective members, acknowledging their points of view and their particular ways of understanding religious matters. These strategies of involvement are actualized, in the texts of the corpus, as instances of the categories of Concurrence, Negation and Counter-expectation, which interact with previous utterances that are part of the discursive universe of members or prospective members of the church. This dissertation is intended as a contribution not only to the System of Appraisal within SFL, but also to studies of religious discourse
