The present paper develops a real-time clutch transition strategy for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in order to achieve quick and smooth clutch transition engagements between pure electrical driving and hybrid driving. Model predictive control (MPC) has been used for this model and tested with different control horizons and weighting factors to verify the ability of MPC to control the vehicle speeds for the clutch engagement. Some modified MPC algorithms with softened constraints and with output regions have been also studied to improve the robustness and the ability of this controller. Comprehensive simulations for the HEV have been conducted in MATLAB and Simulink. Results show that the system can provide real-time optimal control actions subject to input and output constraints for real-time clutch transition engagement with high driving comfort. The system can be implemented in electronic control units and applied for real HEVs.

Unions are recognized for building a strong middle class. But the importance of unions to maintaining a strong democracy is less understood. This article explores the connection between the decline of unions and the rise of the right; provides examples of the effect of union member engagement in political engagement; and makes the case that changes in policy and new organizing can restore the crucial role of unions in civic life.

ABSTRACTBackground: Social engagement and depression are important outcomes for residents with dementia in long-term care. However, it is still largely unclear which differences in social engagement and depression exist in residents of various long-term care settings and how these differences may be explained. This study investigated the relationship between social engagement and depressive symptoms in long-term care dementia units, and studied whether differences in social engagement and depressive symptoms between units can be ascribed to the composition of the resident population or to differences in type of care setting. Methods: Thirty-seven long-term care units for residents with dementia in nursing- and residential homes in the Netherlands participated in the study. Social engagement and depressive symptoms were measured for 502 residents with the Minimum Data Set of the Resident Assessment Instrument. Results were analyzed using multilevel analysis. Results: Residents of psychogeriatric units in nursing homes experienced low social engagement. Depressive symptoms were most often found in residents of psychogeriatric units in residential homes. Multilevel analyses showed that social engagement and depressive symptoms correlated moderately on the level of the units. This correlation disappeared when the characteristics of residents were taken into account. Conclusions: Social engagement and depressive symptoms are influenced not only by individual characteristics but also by the type of care setting in which residents live. However, in this study social engagement and depressive symptoms were not strongly related to each other, implying that separate interventions are needed to improve both outcomes.

Aims and methodTo build on previous research findings by examining engagement and problematic behaviours of patients in 10 residential rehabilitation units. Two measures were completed on patients in community rehabilitation, longer-term complex care and high-dependency units (109 patients in total). Data were analysed and categorised into higher-engagement ratings across the domains of engagement and behaviour over the past 6 months and lifetime in terms of presence of the behaviour and likelihood of resulting harm.ResultsData were available for 73% of patients. All aspects of engagement were consistently low for all units, with highest levels in community rehabilitation units. Levels of problematic behaviours were similar across all units. Socially inappropriate behaviours and failure to complete everyday activities were evident for over half of all patients and higher for lifetime prevalence. Verbal aggression was at significantly lower levels in community units. Lifetime behaviours likely to lead to harm were much more evident in high-dependency units.Clinical implicationsDespite some benefits of this type of care, patients continue to present challenges in engagement and problematic behaviours that require new approaches and a change in focus.

Social media is a relatively novel way to send and express information to a large number of people at one time. Public health units (PHUs) have started to use this forum, but there has been almost no research done on how it is being used and if the way information is presented is effective. Engagement is one way to track if something posted on a social media website is being disseminated effectively to the intended audience. If a post has a low level of engagement this means that less people saw it and read the information regardless of how many times it was posted or how much work was put into the post. This article summarizes an environmental scan completed to assess engagement from all Ontario’s PHUs’ usage of social media from January 1, 2020, to June 30, 2020. The social media platforms assessed in this scan are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tiktok, Pinterest, and Reddit. All social media platforms except Reddit are being used by PHUs in Ontario. Twenty-nine PHUs have their own social media profiles, and five have their profiles included in their municipality’s. Engagement varies by region and platform, but in general increased posting (especially on Twitter and Facebook) had a small negative effect on engagement. Posting less often but with more original or creative content leads to better engagement. Increased follower counts also accounted for higher engagement across all platforms. PHUs would best use their resources to increase follower count and post less often and include more personalized posts to effectively spread their information.

The ‘gig economy’ uses digital platforms to bypass many of the regular responsibilities and costs of employment. Ambiguity as to whether gig-economy workers are independent contractors, dependent contractors or employees allows the undermining of traditional labour standards governing minimum wages and other legislated employment conditions. Labour law and institutions need to catch up to the new reality of this form of work and develop new tools to protect and enhance minimum standards for workers in digital platform businesses. Unions, business and government all have a role to play in the long term. Meanwhile, direct engagement between these new firms and workers’ advocates can also help to mitigate the risks posed to labour standards by digital business models, by addressing regulatory gaps. This article is a case study of innovative negotiations between one platform business (Airtasker) and Unions New South Wales, a peak trade unions body in New South Wales, Australia, in order to establish agreed minimum standards for engagements negotiated through this platform.

Introduction: The challenges and difficulties of working in intensive care units put pressure on healthcare professionals, especially nurses. To support nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs), developing supportive climates in organizations may drive nurses towards increasing work engagement levels and other related factors. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between organizational support and the work engagement of nurses working in ICUs. Materials and Methods: This correlational cross-sectional study was conducted on 140 nurses working in two governmental hospitals in Amman City, Jordan, from January to August 2021. The participants were selected with a simple random sampling method, and study data were collected using a 3-part questionnaire: demographics, the survey of perceived organizational support scale with 8 items, and the Utrecht work engagement scale with 9 items. Descriptive statistics, the independent t test, the Spearman correlation test, and hierarchal multiple linear regression analysis were performed to determine the contribution of perceived organizational support on nurses' work engagement. The significance level for all tests was set to be less than 0.05. Results: About 53.6% of participants were male, 55% worked in medical-surgical intensive care units, and 45% were in cardiac care units. The results showed that the mean ± SD scores of perceived organizational support and work engagement were 29.53 ± 6.71 and 3.71 ± 0.88, respectively. Also, results showed no significant differences in perceived organizational support and work engagement based on nurses' socio-demographics or work-related factors. Finally, there was a significant positive weak correlation between perceived organizational support and work engagement (r= 0.23, P=0.002). The linear regression model showed that perceived organizational support could predict work engagement (R2 = 0.039). Conclusions: Perceived organizational support among nurses working in ICUs is one of the important factors in increasing work engagement. Findings have several implications for nurses in different settings. Jordanian health policymakers must take action to improve nurses' perception of organizational support and consequently increase nurses' work engagement.

Introduction: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a critical health issue in the USA. Pennsylvania has the third highest number of drug overdose deaths per year, with the COVID-19 pandemic worsening these trends. Stigmatising beliefs towards OUD are associated with negative health outcomes, and there is a need for a larger evidence base on OUD stigma reduction strategies. This study reports on the creation and implementation of Life Unites Us, a digital media campaign which uses a collective impact framework to address OUD stigma reduction across Pennsylvania. Method: Life Unites Us consists of various components, including a general public media campaign which uses education and contact-based strategies; engagement with stakeholders and advocates in community-based organisations across the state; and a data sharing website to inform the public of previously unavailable OUD stigma statistics. Each campaign component contributes to the overall collective impact framework. Results: Digital metrics showed 755 followers across the Life Unites Us social media pages, and 2,826 total website users with an average of 565 users per month. The campaign has partnered with 60 community based organisations, 921 individuals receive the monthly email and 11 influencers have posted 23 times and achieved over 13,000 engagements and a reach of 661,000. The campaign hosted 5 webinars with 520 attendees and an overall 64.1% attendance rate. Conclusion: This study fills a gap in the need for evidence-based digital interventions to address OUD-related stigma. The positive process metrics from the first 6 months suggest that this model may be an important addition to research on approaches to reduce OUD stigma.

IntroductionThe Therapeutic Engagement Questionnaire (TEQ) has been developed and validated in partnership with service users (SUs), registered mental health nurses (RMHNs) and nurse academics in the UK in accordance with psychometric theory. The TEQ is highly relevant and useful to clinical practice. The TEQ measures therapeutic engagement (TE) in two contexts - 1-1 interactions between SUs and RMHNs, as well as the overall environment and atmosphere of the units - from the perspective of both SUs and RMHNs. The TEQ has been translated into Finnish by two expert panels and was pre-tested and validated in ten adult acute psychiatric in-patient units in two hospitals in Finland.ObjectivesTo measure TE in Finnish adult acute in-patient psychiatric settings from the perspectives of both SUs and RMHNs.MethodsThe Finnish version of the TEQ (Hoidollinen yhteistyö) will be completed by RMHNs and SUs in 15 adult acute psychiatric in-patient units. Nine of the units are within the University Hospital and six in a municipal psychiatric hospital. The data will be collected within a 3-month period (October - December 2020). The coordinating nurse of each unit will organise the operational side of the study including obtaining consent from SUs. The nurses will participate in the survey via Webropol which includes nurses’ consent. Sociodemographic information will be collected from the SUs and nurses.ResultsThe results of the measurement study will be reported at the 29th European Congress of Psychiatry.ConclusionsThe conclusions of the measurement study will be reported at the 29th European Congress of Psychiatry.Conflict of interestThis study is supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration South London (NIHR ARC South London).

Background This study aimed to evaluate the work engagement status of registered pediatric nurses and its relationship with personal- and work-related variables in selected hospitals. Personal- and work-related factors generally influence work engagement. However, data on work engagement in pediatric clinical practice are limited. Methods This study employed a cross-sectional design, including 230 registered nurses working in pediatric units in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. A non-probability approach (convenience sampling) was adopted in recruiting the sample. Eight personal- and work-related variables were examined using the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale shortened 9-item version. Results The overall mean scale score was 4.54 (standard deviation = 0.95). The dedication subscale showed the highest mean score (4.84), followed by the absorption (4.48) and vigor subscales (4.29). A higher work engagement score was associated with an older age (H = 17.892; p < 0.001), a non-Saudi nationality (Z = 5.724; p < 0.001), a higher educational level (Z = 3.178; p = 0.001), and a long duration of experience (>10 years) (H = 18.435; p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed between the total scale score according to marital status (p = 0.077), current working unit (p = 0.063), and current working hours (p = 0.067). Conclusions Among registered pediatric nurses, work engagement is relatively high but is average in terms of the vigor component. To our knowledge, this research is the first to explore how work environment affects work engagement among pediatric nurses in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model that links the major antecedents, outcomes, and moderators of employee engagement. Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses the first part of Dubin's two-part, eight-step theory-building methodology, and builds on existing research and empirical studies on engagement. In particular, the following five steps of the Dubin's methodology are addressed in this study: units (or concepts) of the theory, laws of interaction among the units, boundaries of the theory, system states of the theory, and propositions of the theory. Findings – The proposed theoretical model of employee engagement identifies job design and characteristics, supervisor and co-worker relationships, workplace environment, and HRD practices as the major antecedents to employee engagement. The paper also proposes that job demands and individual characteristics act as moderators to the relationships between job design and characteristics, supervisor and co-worker relationships, workplace environment, and employee engagement. Finally, it is proposed that employee engagement is related to three major organizational outcomes: job performance, turnover intention (inverse relationship), and organizational citizenship behavior. Originality/value – This paper addresses the paucity of structured literature on the antecedents and outcomes of employee engagement and presents a comprehensive, holistic model that offers a logical ground on which empirical indicators and hypotheses could be further identified and tested to verify the theory.

Higher education must move beyond statements of solidarity towards action to support antiracist work at institutions. Although these statements of support are laudable, it can be challenging to successfully operationalize antiracism across all levels of an institution (individuals, activities/programs, courses, units, and entire institutions) and with all stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, and community partners). We suggest that community engagement is a key overlooked strategy and method for advancing antiracist agendas within institutions. Examples of how antiracist work actually manifests through community-university partnerships can help identify successful outcomes of antiracist practices and policies. This article will share findings from a series of dialogues engaging over 250 participants about the intersection of engagement and antiracism, and share a call to develop a set of metrics to assess and measure antiracism in higher education community engagement.

The objectives of this study are to determine 1) The process of using the timetable board in teaching Mathematics, focusing on time units, for Grade II A students at this school, and 2) The improvement of student engagement in Mathematics, particularly in the topic of time units, through the use of the timetable board in Grade II A at this school. The data collection techniques include lectures (material delivery), observation, discussion, tests, and documentation. The subjects of this study are 18 students in Grade II A. The implementation of the learning activities using the timetable board as a teaching aid is deemed successful due to the students' significant curiosity during the learning process. This curiosity has led to increased student activity during the learning process, with a majority of students showing a 50% improvement in understanding the material related to time units in Mathematics. In conclusion, this research suggests that using the timetable board as a learning tool effectively enhances student engagement in Mathematics, particularly in the topic of time units, for Grade II a students at this Elementary School.

This case study explores how a research-practice partnership worked to cross-pollinate culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) over the course of a 9-week spoken word poetry unit in a seventh-grade classroom. The unit reflected CSP’s commitment to linguistic, literate, and cultural pluralism (e.g., centering culture- and identity-focused writing) while also intentionally embedding principles of UDL (e.g., multiple means of representation, action, expression, and engagement). The analysis examines how and why some students in this classroom centered dis/ability in their poetry writing and how the design and implementation of the unit invited more complex understandings of cultures and identities. Findings suggest that CSP supported students in making their identities more visible in the classroom, while the integration of UDL principles eliminated barriers for participation. Both were integral in focal students’ engagements with aspects of their identities throughout the unit. Ultimately, the unit’s design facilitated the movement of the focal students from the periphery to more centripetal roles within the classroom community.

Abstract Background Increasing nurse engagement in Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) is a national initiative. We previously reported results from a stewardship survey where nurses indicated being confident to perform ASP practices, yet identified barriers to stewardship participation. Seventeen barriers were identified, with many centered around hospital culture such as lack of inclusion in rounds, power differentials, and nurse input not actively sought. To further understand organizational and cultural barriers which may influence nursing stewardship engagement, we used responses from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety survey to evaluate nursing perception on hospital culture. Methods Data from the 2017 AHRQ survey were used. Nurses working on noninpatient floors (e.g., post anesthesia care units) were excluded. For this analysis, we included 4 domains pertinent to stewardship initiatives: communication, information exchange, teamwork within and across units. Composite scores within each domain were calculated. Scores were stratified by Intensive Care Nursery (ICN), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Oncology (Onc), medical-surgical (med-surg) units, and dual units (e.g., float pool). Results A total of 424 nurses participated in the survey; 138 (33%) ICN, 90 (21%) PICU, 42 (10%) Onc, 168 (40%) med-surg, and 23, (5%) dual. The majority of nurses had been employed by the hospital for 0–5 years (237; 56%) with 76 (18%) having more than 15 years. The majority of nurses expressed neutrality with communication. Approximately 20% disagreed with the level of information exchange. Nurses perceived teamwork within a unit more favorably than teamwork across units. Responses were relatively consistent across units. Conclusion Successful ASP require interdisciplinary collaboration and communication. Barriers related to communicating and exchanging information may limit nursing engagement. Assessments already used at hospitals could potentially guide methods of integrating nurses into stewardship with AHRQ data offering another lens to assess factors influencing behaviors to steward. A thorough understanding of nurses’ perceived work climate may inform engagement strategies. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

Rationale: Engagement promotes and supports the active participation of patients and families in health care and research to strengthen their influence on decision-making. We sought to characterize how citizens wish to be engaged in care and research in the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: Interviewers administered questionnaires to visitors in 3 adult ICUs and 1 pediatric ICU. Results: We surveyed 202 (adult [n = 130] and pediatric [n = 72]) visitors. Adults and pediatric visitors prioritized 3 patient care topics (family involvement in rounds, improving communication between family members and health-care providers, and information transmission between health-care practitioners during patient transfers) and 2 research topics (evaluating prevention and recovery from critical illness). Preferred engagement activities included sharing personal experiences, identifying important topics and outcomes, and finding ways to make changes that respected their needs. Both respondent groups preferred to participate by completing electronic surveys or comment cards and answering questions on a website. Few respondents (<5%) wanted to participate in committees that met regularly. Although adult and pediatric respondents identified common facilitators and barriers to participation, they ranked them differently. Although both groups perceived engagement to be highly important, adult respondents were significantly less confident that their participation would impact care (7.6 ± 2.2 vs 8.3 ± 1.8; P = .01) and research (7.3 ± 2.4 vs 8.2 ± 2.0; P = .01) and were significantly less willing to participate in care (5.6 ± 2.9 vs 6.7 ± 3.0; P = .007) and research (4.7 ± 3.0 vs ± 5.8 ± 3.0; P = .02). Conclusions: Adult and pediatric visitors expressed comparable engagement preferences, identified similar facilitators and barriers, and rated engagement highly. Adult visitors were significantly less confident that their participation would be impactful and were significantly less willing to engage in care and research.

The purpose of this paper is to share the author’s online teaching experiences on increasing student engagement and learning experience in a digital teaching environment using the discussion board tool. This paper was written in the first person – that is, the author as I positioned myself within the study context. Blackboard was adopted as the learning management system at the author’s affiliated university for the digital teaching and learning delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic era. Discussion board is a communication tool contained within the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra that can be used to enhance learning and teaching. This paper is a reflective account of the author and students in three undergraduate (UG) teaching units during pandemic era. A combination of existing academic literature, online resources, online interviews via discussion board tool and personal experiences were employed to demonstrate and reflect my engagement with UG students in order to achieve specific learning outcomes. To achieve the purpose of my personal reflection reporting, this study asks one question from the participants: How would you describe your learning experience and engagement with your lecturer and fellow students using the discussion board tool for pre-tutorial and group assignment? This paper presents a context, reflection and case scenarios of three UG teaching units concerning fostering student engagement in digital learning environment through the discussion board tool. Findings indicate that there are three stages of student engagement using the discussion board tool namely: tutor-student engagement, student-student engagement, and student group-student group engagement. Discussion board tool encourages active learning experience. The implications of my reflective account shows that fostering student engagement in a digital learning environment through the discussion board is important for both tutors and students. It is recommended that more faculty members will explore learning and teaching resources available on discussion board tool in the ‘new normal’ era.

Abstract We explored potential profiles of interest, attitudes, and source evaluation by performing cluster analysis in a sample of Norwegian upper-secondary students. Differences among the profile groups with regard to multiple-document use were examined. The profile groups were partly consistent with the default stances described by the cognitive-affective engagement model of multiple-source use (List & Alexander, 2017), resulting in critical analytic, evaluative, and disengaged profiles. However, the model’s assumption that interest and attitude constitute one affective engagement dimension was not confirmed. There were no statistically significant differences between the profile groups in the processing of a set of multiple documents; yet there was a tendency for students who adopted a critical analytic stance to engage in a more thorough text selection process. Those students also included more information units from the selected texts in their written products and integrated information units across the texts more frequently compared to the other profile groups.

This study investigates the impact of Differentiated Instruction (DI) in high school English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, analyzing its influence on students' perceptions, motivation, and engagement. Using mixed methods, it delivers a comprehensive assessment of DI's effectiveness. Quantitative analysis of survey data reveals a strong, positive perception of DI among EFL high school students. Each one-unit increase in students' DI perception corresponds to a 0.508 units increase in DI (t = 10.613, p < 0.001, Beta = 0.639). Engagement also significantly impacts DI; a one-unit increase in engagement yields a 0.496 units increase in DI (t = 10.512, p < 0.001, Beta = 0.653). Conversely, motivation negatively relates to DI; a one-unit increase in motivation results in a 0.353 units decrease in DI (t = -7.219, p < 0.001, Beta = -0.305). Qualitative insights from in-depth interviews resonate with the quantitative findings. Students express heightened engagement, enjoyment, and empowerment through DI, accompanied by a positive shift in their perspectives. They credit DI with accommodating diverse readiness levels, enhancing learning achievements, and reshaping their views of English as a subject. Additionally, the flexible grouping strategies within DI foster dynamic, collaborative learning environments. In sum, this research highlights the multifaceted benefits of DI in EFL high school education, offering a nuanced understanding of its implications within this context. This abstract has been expanded to 240 words to provide a more comprehensive overview of the study's findings and implications.

SummaryThis paper considers the various ways in which unions respond to transnational restructuring in their longer-term planning and at different levels of action. To this extent, it avoids simply falling into a workplace-based view of mobilizing, or a national and state level view of union lobbying and mobilizing, but instead looks at how different (multi) levels of union action develop (or otherwise) a portfolio of sustainable longer term planning approaches. More concretely, it examines the way that unions activate their learning capacity at various levels in order to develop and use coordination and networking to respond to transnational restructuring. We approach restructuring not only from the point of view of unions’ external organizational relations (employers, members, community, etc.), but also their internal organizational requirements and relations that build a more proactive union response. To reframe the context in which union coordination capability is built up, transnational restructuring should be examined. We start from a conceptual distinction between “influencing” (external) and “communication” (internal) union strategies. Specifically, four different strategies, which take place at different levels of union action, are identified and presented in the paper. They reflect different dimensions of coordination as a feature of long term union learning and preparation in relation to restructuring: (1) lobbying and campaigning to influence the macro-level regulatory environment; (2) organizing and coordinating action in relation to influencing micro-level change; (3) developing informational and learning strategies about skills and training development to prepare individuals for negotiating change at the micro-level; and (4) developing communication and exchange of information with each other to create greater levels of awareness and focus in relation to restructuring at the macro-level.Conclusions identify that the structure and content of union coordination in the context of cross-border restructuring is a complex issue that cannot be reduced to simple historical binaries of bureaucracy-activist or employer facing versus membership facing. Our findings demonstrate that coordination works across various sets of dimensions (i.e. “influencing” and “communicating”), relations (internal and external) and levels (i.e. micro and macro). Therefore, it requires complex sets of organization and agendas.

American trade unions are a crucial segment of civil society that enriches our democracy. Union members are stewards of the public good, empowering the individual through collective action and solidarity. While union density has declined, the U.S. labor movement remains a substantial political and economic force. But the relentless attacks by the political right and its corporate allies could lead to an erosion of civic engagement, further economic inequality, and a political imbalance of power that can undermine society. The extreme assault on unions waged by Republicans in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, and at a national level must be countered by a revitalized labor movement and by those who understand that unions are positive civil actors who bring together individuals who alone have little power. Unions need both structural reform and greater boldness; there are moments in which direct action and dramatic militancy can bring about positive social change. The current assault on labor can be rebuffed, and unions can expand their role as stewards for the public good and as defenders of efforts by the 99 percent to reduce inequality and protect democracy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe an online faculty development pilot course on how to engage students online. A framework was used, referred to as the Trifecta of Student Engagement, for the design of the course. The Trifecta of Student Engagement proposes that students, in order to be fully engaged in a course, need to be engaged with their course content, with their peers and with their instructor. The course has three units of content that each correspond to the Trifecta of Student Engagement. This course has gone through one pilot with faculty and has impacted students and faculty positively. Design/methodology/approach An online faculty development course was piloted with eight faculty members across a range of disciplines who participated in the program. After taking the course, they had to apply the Trifecta of Student Engagement framework to a course they taught and share what they did via written report, webinar, or web presentation. This study summarized the faculty participants’ written reports and presentations as well as provided a qualitative evaluation on the impact this course had on students and faculty. Findings After faculty applied the Trifecta of Student Engagement framework to courses taught, faculty saw an improvement in student engagement, satisfaction, learning and achievement. Three faculty surveyed students to determine their engagement and satisfaction and found students to respond positively to the use of tools and activities for student-to-content engagement, student-to-student engagement and student-to-instructor engagement. Two faculty examined student grades to determine if there were changes in student outcomes. One professor saw average grades increase by 11 percent. Another professor saw grades improve by 8 percent. She also found that student assessment of learning increased by 0.57. Both faculty attributed the improvement to the effectiveness of the teaching strategies employed. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to the eight faculty who participated in the pilot. Some faculty used methods to attempt to measure the impacts of their teaching practices by surveying students and looking at student performance data. A second pilot is needed for additional faculty to take the course and apply the Trifecta of Engagement framework to generate more data for impact. Practical implications Institutions looking to create an online teaching professional development course for faculty can utilize the Trifecta of Student Engagement framework for their course design. Additionally, faculty can read about tools and strategies that they can immediately apply to create more student-to-content engagement, student-to-student engagement and student-to-instructor engagement. Social implications Faculty can be more intentional in how they engage students in their online course experience. Originality/value This paper adds to the literature on faculty development regarding student-centered teaching practices. Other institutions looking to create a faculty development course or program that utilizes a student-centered framework may find aspects of this paper useful for their own online teaching professional development initiatives.

ABSTRACT Small, well prepared, culturally competent, and embedded health engagement teams (EHET) tailored to work within a partner health system, rather than outside of it, will achieve greater mutual benefit, desired military objectives, and better health outcomes for the United States Department of Defence and its partners. EHETs have significant advantages over traditional methods of choice for health security cooperation and humanitarian assistance missions. These advantages include enhanced capability and capacity building, greater trust through intentional cultural expertise, a ready platform for enduring relationships, enhanced host nation legitimacy, and flexibility to target specific issues with greater fidelity. We must first define a prototype EHET, compare the concept against prior units that have executed health engagement, and test it prospectively in employment. The U.S. military and the civilian business world each have extensive experience in employing small teams that the health community can emulate. The ideal EHET should have the following nine characteristics: 12 people or fewer, skillsets for the tasks, global health knowledge, be multidisciplinary, a balance of experience, local language capability, geopolitical and cultural competence, targeted preparation for specific security and health objectives, and joint representation. This paper will explore these components of the prototype EHET as it will be tested in our research project.

Purpose Patient safety remains a top priority in healthcare. Many organizations have developed systems to monitor and prevent harm, and have invested in different approaches to quality improvement. Despite these organizational efforts to better detect adverse events, efficient resolution of safety problems remains a significant challenge. The authors developed and implemented a comprehensive multimodal patient safety improvement program called SafetyLEAP. The term “LEAP” is an acronym that highlights the three facets of the program including: a Leadership and Engagement approach; Audit and feedback; and a Planned improvement intervention. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of the SafetyLEAP program in the intensive care units (ICUs) of three large hospitals. Design/methodology/approach A comparative case study approach was used to compare and contrast the adherence to each component of the SafetyLEAP program. The study was conducted using a convenience sample of three (n=3) ICUs from two provinces. Two reviewers independently evaluated major adherence metrics of the SafetyLEAP program for their completeness. Analysis was performed for each individual case, and across cases. Findings A total of 257 patients were included in the study. Overall, the proportion of the SafetyLEAP tasks completed was 64.47, 100, and 26.32 percent, respectively. ICU nos 1 and 2 were able to identify opportunities for improvement, follow a quality improvement process and demonstrate positive changes in patient safety. The main factors influencing adherence were the engagement of a local champion, competing priorities, and the identification of appropriate resources. Practical implications The SafetyLEAP program allowed for the identification of processes that could result in patient harm in the ICUs. However, the success in improving patient safety was dependent on the engagement of the care teams. Originality/value The authors developed an evidence-based approach to systematically and prospectively detect, improve, and evaluate actions related to patient safety.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between fit (organization and job) perceptions and work engagement (WE). Design/methodology/approach The authors deployed a two-wave survey among 377 clerical employees of the specialist lending division of a large UK bank, with the waves separated by 12 months. Findings The results show a positive relationship between person organization (PO) and person job (PJ) fit perceptions (at Time 1) and WE (at Time 2). Job satisfaction (JS) and affective commitment (AC) dual-mediate these relationships. The effect of PO fit on WE manifests primarily via AC, while the effect of PJ fit manifests primarily via JS. Practical implications The study indicates that organizations should consider the fit of employees to their jobs and the organization when designing interventions intended to increase WE. Also, potential synergies exist between organizational interventions designed to influence employee attitudes focused on similar units of analysis: e.g., PJ fit with JS or PO fit with AC. Originality/value This study provides the first investigation of the dual-mediation, via JS and AC, of the effects of both PJ and PO fit on WE. Furthermore, the use of a time-lagged design strengthens the evidence for the novel hypotheses of this study and enables verification of findings in the extant literature.

Methods: Students enrolled into year 1 of a chiropractic master's degree (MChiro) at our college were selected for this study. Data collected included demographics, attendance, virtual learning environment use, additional learning needs, previous degree qualifications, and summative marks. Differences between students who had to take an examination more than once (resit) and nonresit students were explored using t test and χ2 analysis. Relationships between attendance and end-of-year marks were explored using regression analysis. Results: Male students outperformed female students in four of the six units and as the total year average. Students who attended <80% of classes were more likely to have a resit in one or more units (relative risk [RR] = 2.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4–4.9). Students who performed poorly (<70%) in the semester 1 unit of a course on human structure and failed the semester 1 practical assessment of a course on clinical management were significantly more likely to have one or more resit assessments in semester 2 units (RR = 3.5 [95% CI, 2.2–5.7]; RR = 3.2 [95% CI, 2.0–4.9]). Attendance and unit 105 were independent predictors of one or more resits at the end-of-year (R2 = 0.86, p < .001). Conclusion: Attendance and first semester summative marks were associated with end-of-year performance. As such, these markers of performance may be used to flag struggling students in the program.

The aim of this paper is to emphasize the value of developing cultural awareness in kinesiology students to prepare them to enter the workforce in a world where the principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion are evolving. The authors provide examples of sustained and impactful practices from three kinesiology units in higher education that have been recognized with the American Kinesiology Association Inclusive Excellence Award. The case studies demonstrate that institutional support for inclusive excellence is instrumental in development of sustainable experiences. Kinesiology leaders can demonstrate commitment to inclusive excellence by supporting faculty who conduct teaching, research, and service activities that meet their institution’s inclusive excellence goals. Other areas where kinesiology units can influence student development include curriculum, student engagement activities, university and community partnerships, and leadership for inclusive excellence.

The article explores two questions: what is feminist bioethics, and how different it is from standard bioethics. Development of feminist bioethics, it is argued, began as a response to standard bioethics, challenging its background values, and philosophical perspectives. The most important contribution of feminist bioethics has been its re-examination of the basic conceptual underpinnings of mainstream bioethics, including the concepts of ?universality?, ?autonomy?, and ?trust?. Particularly important for feminists has been the concept of autonomy. They challenge the old liberal notion of autonomy that treats individuals as separate social units and argue that autonomy is established through relations. Relational autonomy assumes that identities and values are developed through relationships with others and that the choices one makes are shaped by specific social and historical contexts. Neither relational autonomy, nor feminist bioethics, however, represents a single, unified perspective. There are, actually, as many feminist bioethics as there are feminisms-liberal, cultural, radical, postmodern etc. Their different ontological, epistemological and political underpinnings shape their respective approaches to bioethical issues at hand. Still what they all have in common is interest in social justice-feminists explore mainstream bioethics and reproductive technologies in order to establish whether they support or impede gender and overall social justice and equality. Feminist bioethics thus brings a significant improvement to standard bioethics.

This study aims to apply PLS-SEM to investigate the mediation roles of goal setting and task strategies, two constructs of online self-regulated learning, between behavioral/cognitive engagement and germane/extraneous cognitive load in an online course with smart instant feedback. Participants of this study consisted of 35 graduate students who were asked to complete four units of digital learning materials and questionnaires as part of the experiment. Results show that goal setting has a significant mediation effect between behavioral engagement and germane cognitive load; task strategies have a significant mediation effect between behavioral engagement and extraneous cognitive load; and task strategies also have a significant mediation effect between cognitive engagement and extraneous cognitive load. Finally, recommendations are provided to instructors and researchers based on these results as a reference for future studies.

This study examines the impact of AI chatbots as a communication medium on student engagement and support in higher education. The qualitative method and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) were employed as the research approach, utilizing in-depth semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling was used to select 11 participants from the state of Kerala, India, in higher education. Data analysis followed the Systematic Text Consideration (STC), a five-step process, including framing meaning units, condensing meaning units, coding, creating sub-themes, and deriving themes. By exploring themes aligned with the UTAUT2 constructs, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing student engagement and support was achieved. A total of eight themes were identified, encompassing “Effectiveness and Limitations,” “Beyond,” “Enrichment,” “Optimization,” “Synergize,” “Streamlining Communication,” “Engage+AI,” and “Refine.” These themes provided compelling evidence of the transformative potential of AI chatbots in facilitating effective communication, enhancing engagement, and offering timely support. The study’s results carry significant practical implications for higher education institutions. Embracing AI chatbots, universities and institutions can enhance student engagement and support through efficient communication, personalized recommendations, and streamlined interactions. These chatbots offer a balance between quick assistance and human expertise, optimizing both routine tasks and complex inquiries. Additionally, addressing security and privacy concerns is crucial to fostering trust and successful integration. Overall, embracing AI chatbots can transform the educational experience, making it more efficient, engaging, and supportive for students in higher education.

In a digital media environment where content distribution is shaped by technology companies’ algorithms and user behaviors, news organizations try to post content that can prompt user engagement in forms such as comments, shares, and likes or reactions. This study employs a content analysis of 1,600 messages and analyses of engagement metrics for 157,962 messages to examine to what extent and how Facebook messages of US and Israeli news organizations differ in the engagement modes they generate: commenting versus sharing versus liking/reacting. Drawing on the participation paradigm in audience research, news value theory, and literature on engagement enhancers, the study shows that certain content characteristics are associated with each of the examined engagement modes in more than one country while other content characteristics are associated with particular modes, but not with all of them. It offers a nuanced understanding of user interaction with news-related content and helps think about content units as more engaging or less engaging than others, or as engaging in different ways.

Aims.Incorporating consumer perspectives into mental health services design is important in working to deliver recovery-oriented care. One of the challenges faced in mental health rehabilitation services is limited consumer engagement with the available support. Listening to consumers’ expectations of mental health services, and what they hope to achieve, provides an opportunity to examine the alignment between existing services and the priorities and preferences of the people who use them. We explored consumer understandings and expectations of three recovery-oriented community-based residential mental-health rehabilitation units using semi-structured interviews; two of these units were trialling a staffing model integrating peer support with clinical care.Methods.Twenty-four consumers completed semi-structured interviews with an independent interviewer during the first 6 weeks of their stay at the rehabilitation unit. Most participants had a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia or a related psychotic disorder (87%). A pragmatic approach to grounded theory guided the analysis, facilitating identification of content and themes, and the development of an overarching conceptual map.Results.The rehabilitation units were considered to provide a transformational space and a transitional place. The most common reason given for engagement was housing insecurity or homelessness rather than the opportunity for rehabilitation engagement. Differences in expectations did not emerge between consumers entering the clinical and integrated staffing model sites.Conclusions.Consumers understand the function of the rehabilitation service they are entering. However, receiving rehabilitation support may not be the key driver of their attendance. This finding has implications for promoting consumer engagement with rehabilitation services. The absence of differences between the integrated and clinical staffing models may reflect the novelty of the rehabilitation context. The study highlights the need for staff to find better ways to increase consumer awareness of the potential relevance of evidence-based rehabilitation support to facilitating their recovery.
