The topic of this study is a notion of empathy that is common in philosophy and in the behavioral sciences. It is here referred to as ‘the notion of empathy as emotional sharing’, and it is characterized in terms of three ideas. If a person, S, has empathy with respect to an emotion of another person, O, then (i) S experiences an emotion that is similar to an emotion that O is currently having, (ii) S’s emotion is caused, in a particular way, by the state of O or by S’s entertaining an idea of the state or situation of O, and (iii) S experiences this emotion in a way that does not entail that S is in the corresponding emotional state. The aim of the study is to clarify this notion of empathy by clarifying these three ideas and by tracing the history of their development in philosophy.

The study consists of two parts. Part one contains a short and selective account of the history in Western philosophy of the notion of empathy as emotional sharing. In chapter 2 Spinoza’s theory of imitation of affects and Hume’s theory of sympathy are presented. It is argued that these theories only exemplify the second idea characteristic of the notion of empathy as emotional sharing. Chapter 3 contains presentations of Adam Smith’s theory of sympathy, and Schopenhauer’s theory of compassion. These theories are shown to exemplify the second and the third idea. In chapter 4 there are presentations of Edith Stein’s description of Einfühlung, and Max Scheler’s account of empathy and fellow-feeling. It is shown that these accounts contain explicit specifications of the third idea, and it is argued that they also exemplify the second idea.

In part two, the three ideas are further clarified and the notion of empathy as emotional sharing is defined. Chapter 5 contains a discussion of the main contemporary philosophical analyses of empathy. Three different views are distinguished: one that construes empathetic emotions as emotional states, one that construes them as imagined emotions, and one that construes them as off-line emotions. The first two views are criticized and rejected. The third is accepted and further developed in chapter 6, which contains a general analysis of the emotions. A distinction is made between two ways of experiencing an emotion, and it is argued that it is possible to have the affective experience characteristic of a particular kind of emotional state without being in that kind of state. In chapter 7, a definition of ‘empathy’ is proposed. This definition contains specifications of the three ideas characteristic of the notion of empathy as emotional sharing, and it shows both how the empathizer’s emotion resembles the emotion of the empathee, and how this emotion is caused and experienced.

Nearly all emotional experiences are socially shared, rapidly after their occurrence and mainly with close relatives. If, whatever their characteristics (age, gender, culture,…) and those of the event (emotional valence, type of emotion,…), individuals are so prone to talk about their emotions with the others, it would particularly be because it can help them to manage their emotional states. Verbalizing one’s emotions would indeed permit the subject to catch his/her relatives’ interest when he/she is under the impact of the emotion and hardly able to manage his/her emotional state alone. This mobilization of the close circle would permit to fit not only the socio-affective needs but also the cognitive needs the emotion gives rise to, through the initiation of intrapersonal and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies. May it concern current life stressors or high intensity and negative stressors, as it is the case in cancer, when the individuals talk about their emotional experiences, it would notably be because they have difficulties in managing them and as a consequence seek help to the others in order to regulate these experiences. However, talking about one’s emotions would not be beneficial for everybody in the same way. The efficacy of those strategies would notably be determined by the attachment style and the expectancies it creates about the way the others can help us to manage our emotions. So, the contribution of the social sharing of emotions in the emotion regulation is at the heart of this thesis, and was investigated by three studies. The first study has permit to better understand the role of the emotional verbalization in the emotion regulation by creating an evaluation scale of the alleged motives for social sharing (Article 1). This scale, which permits to identify the intrapersonal and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies initiated through the social sharing, was used in a second study, whose goal was to test the hypothesis that the cancer patients socially share their emotional states in order to initiate emotion regulation strategies, which would contribute to diminish their difficulties in emotion regulation and, as a consequence, to ameliorate the way they face the disease (Article 2). Finally, the last study aimed at determining if the emotion regulation strategies initiated via the social sharing mediate the link between attachment style and difficulties in emotion regulation (Article 3). Our results are discussed and research perspectives and clinical applications are proposed

Purpose – The purpose of this work is to examine the influence that gender and different emotional stimuli exert on people’s online sharing intentions. Precisely, we take a closer look at whether (1) people share more positive or negative content; (2) men or women react more strongly to these emotional stimuli; and (3) emotional valence has a heterogeneous effect across genders. Design/Methodology - This dissertation employs an experimental study: 2 (emotional valence: positive vs. negative) x 2 (gender: male vs. female) between-subjects design. Findings – Results show that emotional valence does indeed influence sharing intentions, and more importantly, that negative emotions lead to a higher willingness to share. Further, results demonstrated that women share more content online when compared to men but no heterogeneous effects of emotional valence were observed. Research limitations - The main limitation of this research is that it is based on self-reported answers to hypothetical scenarios, since we intend to measure potential behavior of sharing. Meaning that, although an individual’s intention to commit to a certain behavior is the most adequate predictor of one’s behavior, it is beyond the scope of this study to measure actual sharing behavior. Practical implications - This research produced valuable insights by providing relevant information on how to create content that will probably be highly shared, on the opposite to the regular content that most agencies and marketer use to promote their products.

This thesis focuses on the understanding of sharing emotions mechanisms and collective emotional experiences in recreational event consumption situation like festivals. The emotion is studied from a collective point of view and the attention is focused on positive emotions, giving this work a double originality. We adopted an abductive process that is articulated around successive phases of ethnographic immersions in festive gatherings of the action sport and the psytrance communities, and a use of multidisciplinary literature significant to to our registration in the Consumption Cultural Theory (CCT) research stream. Our results show that transfers of emotion are central in the event consumer experience. The process of emotional sharing and emotional contagion are ubiquitous and contribute to the creation of collective emotions that the experience is sought by the festival consumer or the event spectator. These emotional dynamics that are closely linked with the notion of belonging to the community, are shaping the consumption logics of the festival visitors, and are influencing their relation to the experience. The socio-cultural anchor of emotional dynamics is also confirmed by our results.Understanding the experience with the collective emotional dimension has allowed us to offer a unique approach to the experience and specific analytical frameworks to the context of festivals and live performances. In addition, this work opens many research perspectives on new concepts that our analysis was to update, such as emotional leader, emotional style and emotional density

People turn to others for help and advice during hard times. Early psychologists suggested a ‘talking cure’ as a remedy for emotional turmoil (e.g., Freud, 1916–7/1963; Rogers, 1942). Likewise, folk psychology often sees heart-to-heart conversations as a win-win proposition that brings relief to the afflicted person and reinforces social bonds at the time of need. However, talking about problems does not always help (e.g., Rimé, 2009; Rimé, Mesquita, Boca, & Philppot, 1991; Rimé, Philippot, Boca, & Mesquita, 1992; Rose, 2002). In some cases, problem-talk can be a lose-lose proposition that drags both discussants into depression (Rose, 2002; Rose, Carlson, & Waller, 2007). This thesis examines co-rumination (Rose, 2002), a case of emotional sharing that hurts people instead of helping them, on three levels of analysis (individuals, dyads, and groups). At the individual level, I sketch the life course of co-rumination and replicate earlier findings of gender differences. Furthermore, online survey data (N = 464) links co-rumination with agreeableness and neuroticism. I also demonstrate that co-rumination can be assessed with a brief measure that is 66% shorter than the original. At the dyadic level, data from recorded conversations between romantic couples show that face-to-face co-rumination influences people’s real-time emotional trajectories in complex ways. Furthermore, observer-ratings of the conversations suggest that third-parties can detect co-rumination, even from silent videos. Finally, I study how people react to others’ negative mood and co-rumination in a real social context by longitudinally following two cohorts of students and modelling their interactions with social network analysis tools. These models show that co-rumination appears to elicit social rejection from others, implying a possible pathway to depression via loneliness imposed on the co-ruminators.

Despite the great interest addressed to the topic of emotions, it has always been treated as a marginal issue if compared to cognition. Nonetheless in the last 30 years a new perspective suggested that emotions are effectively the causes, mediators, or consequences of other psychological processes, and, above all, of interpersonal relations. The first study of the present Doctoral Thesis was conceived as an emotion induction paradigm in the attempt to identify some biological markers of the subjective emotional experience within a multi-method perspective. Then, in the attempt to move a step forward in describing the social dimension of the emotional sharing, the second study was designed by creating emotional stimuli that represented real interactions between two inter-agents. They could also vary for phylogenetic closeness following the hypothesis that, thanks to mirroring and simulation processes, emotion perception is easier when the other agent is perceived as similar. Finally, the idea that some variables related to the social encounter are able to modulate the capacity to resonate with others’ emotions was better explored in the last study: a real social cooperative task in the form of a hyperscanning paradigm. The aim was to explore the presence of synchronized patterns during the joint action. To conclude, the three studies have been designed according to an increased level of complexity, from a single-subject perspective towards a two-person approach, with simple, interactive, and dynamic emotional cues during simple, complex, and hyper-complex emotional contexts.

Ubiquitous computing describes the aspirations of including information systems into the fabric of our daily lives. The emphasis of the user should be on what task needs to be achieved rather than how the system will do it. The interface of applications that are integrated into the home fabric needs to be delicate in the sense that it should give the feeling of being a part of the home rather than a piece of technology. The human computer interaction/interface needs to be cohesive with the environment people live in so as to maximise the interaction possibilities. Photographs are a very affective and efficient way of connecting people to each other. We should not forget the social role photographs have to play. The most important aspect of the picture is the story that it is trying to convey, the people in it, or the place it was taken. Emotions are a very private part of our personal life and how one displays it reflects one’s lifestyle. In recent years increasing efforts have been put into preserving emotions in photos particularly with the advent of digital cameras. Now photographs have become an important part of our lives and have significant social role as they provide an affective communication link between friends and families. This research will be looking at how people relate themselves to pictures and if we could capture their emotions and expressions to store them in a way that is representative of their feelings towards the picture. As emotions can be associated with pictures of family, friends, places, holidays, social gatherings or travel to mention some of the aspects, we will also be analysing as to how emotions change over a period of time and if it could be represented accordingly in association with digital photos. This will allow us to look into the factors, which can make digital photo sharing a more fun and enjoyable experience. This research will involve user based evaluations and a scenario based approach for modelling the photo sharing interface. The creation of photo sharing system, based on this approach, is then investigated using the method of prototyping. The research shows methods, architectures, and tools used to make the development process more efficient and help assess the viability of the system under conditions that simulate to everyday use of the photo sharing software. To generalise and communicate results, the project will seek to simulate the home environment in a laboratory setting, using prototypes based on current high-end computing devices. The .Net technologies used for rapid prototyping is introduced. The aim of this research is to provide a demonstration environment of a photo sharing software for the smart home, which will allow for Reception/Viewing/distribution of photos within the home environment. The data could incorporate Audio/Video/Text/Photos, and user input etc. The research will also help us understand various aspects of how people interact with Digital Photos, what they would like to do, how can storing photos be made simpler, annotation of pictures, how can sharing photo’s made simpler, and how we can design an application which would allow users to attach emotions to pictures. The photo sharing system will provide an effective means to receive and distribute emotional information based on personal and temporal relationships associated with photos. The research also analyses the role of human computer interaction when developing ubiquitous technologies for the smart homes where information is embedded in the environment people live in. The research will present an overview of how photo sharing systems can be developed and evaluated using prototypes and user evaluations.

ME|EMO provides a method to help users to express, visualize and share emotions through digital nonverbal communication. This application will enable the users to map their emotions to colors and encourage users to paint their feelings. A canvas with uncolored images and a color palette with color coded emotions creates an environment for expressing and visualizing the feelings. The result is an image file in the form of a simple piece of modern art with the possibility of sharing it through social networks, or to record the emotions and save precious moments of life. Technology development, new ways of communication, digital tools, apps, social media, have helped people to have a better life by giving people the opportunity to communicate easier with loved ones and friends. ME|EMO tries to enhance the way of modern communication (digital text-based) such as social networks or modern healthcare systems, by supporting the emotional side of communications.

Going viral' is seen by marketers as the new grail to reach large online communities. In this viral scene, videos have a special role, given their strong tendency to spread exponentially over the internet via social sharing. Every year sees the breaking of new records for virality. In March 2012, the video 'KONY 2012' calling for united action against the eponym African militia leader, reached over 34,000,000 of views on its first day of launch. In December 2012, the 'Gangnam Style' music video became the first YouTube video to reach over a billion views, totalizing over 1.4 billion views in March 2013. Such illustrations clearly underline the new scale that the internet gave to word-of-mouth sharing. Marketers understood the fantastic lever of viral videos and tried to seize the phenomenon so as to replicate it for business purposes. This research aims at providing insights to academics and marketers on the determinants to online commercial videos sharing. The focus was set more specifically on the role of emotions in the sharing, to identify which emotions lead and how they lead to the sharing of online commercial videos. The research was conducted leveraging two scientific methods, a survey and a text-mining analysis that attributed emotions to comments from the most shared YouTube videos. The research confirms with new means a number of hypotheses previously tested and validated by Academics. It shows that positivity and strength are larger drivers for video sharing than negativity and weakness (Lindgreen and Vanhamme, 2005; Dobele et al., 2007). It also argues that video content as well as its context are very significant determinants of online video-sharing (Laskey et al., 1989; Taylor, 1999). Beyond validating existing theories, the research brought new elements to the table, notably the role of strength/weakness dimension of emotions to analyze virality, and the importance of a clear 'call to action' embedded in the video to boost its sharing. These novel concepts enrich the very quickly evolving literature on the topic and pave the way for further research.

Fear is an intrinsic human emotion, which produces with variable intensity a bodily reaction as a response to a stimuli. It is considered one of the basic human emotions, and it is universal of all animal species. Despite its subjective quality, fear has gained a rather negativistic stereotype that this research intends to debate and readdress, proposing that “negative fear” is part of an evolutionary transition cultivated by social and cultural constructs. This thesis will analyze the context in which fear operates, employing experience design methodologies and design research to reevaluate the role of fear in the contemporary settings of our societies to prove its connection to imagination, transhumanism and the production of empathy. After a brief historical perspective to situate this thesis in the contemporary framework of experience design, this research will investigate fear as prolific tool for the production of imagination, derived from its aesthetic connection to wonder and pleasure. This particular connection between fear to wonder was investigated among others by Charles Darwin, who also promoted the functionality of fear as the key to animal survival. The complex mechanism in which fear engages us will lead to the production of design prototypes that look at the animal kingdom and several other species’ talents in the detection and implementation of fear as a tool to survive. Here, the potential of our species to further evolve through the use of design will open a discussion on transhumanism and the future of humanity. The last section speculates a counterfactual conditional statement of how our humanity would operate, if emotional identities were reevaluated. In particular, the emotion of fear will be reevaluated for its unpleasant characteristics, from the bodily sensations to the mental postliminary conditions, to understand why certain human behaviors are still exercised, when the physiological effects are universally acknowledged as distasteful. By interpreting the physiological impact of fear, this research will continue its argument towards empathy, questioning what it truly means to ‘stand in someone’s else shoes’, specifically when fear is practiced. Empathy, as a pilaster in the mission statement of many contemporary disciplines, has surfaced in this research as viral phenomenon, which little has to do with truly ‘empathizing’. Here, it investigates how empathy can be experienced when fear is in play: if sharing fear as the bodily experience of someone else can lead to the production of authentic empathy, then humans have a chance to reevaluate its application in the contemporary global topics of war and diplomacy, domestic and public violence, or bullying to name a few. This research ultimately establishes a new perspective on the role of emotions in our societies, and creates a connection between design and the experience of intangibles, producing a view of the intrinsic systems of our being as ones deemed of value in the ambitious evolution of our species.

Having identified a gap in counselling psychology literature, this study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of Greek-Cypriot refugees of 1974 living in the UK as well as second generation Greek-Cypriot individuals who either have one or two refugee parents. The phenomenological lived experiences of the events of 1974 in Cyprus were explored in relation to Greek-Cypriot refugees with particular emphasis on their experiences of psychological support systems and what it meant to be a refugee living in the UK. The second part of the thesis explored the lived experiences of second generation Greek-Cypriots with one or both refugee parents. A consideration of the impact on identity and experience of upbringing in the UK was explored. Eight London based Greek-Cypriots were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Two study groups were generated consisting of three refugees and five second generation. Data were analysed using Jonathan A. Smith’s (2008) method of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The epistemological standpoint of a social constructivist approach was adopted. The findings from group A captured three superordinate themes: a) the other side of loss; b) memories are made of this and c) the internal self-soother with six subordinate themes generated. The findings from group B captured four superordinate themes: a) the present consequences of a past event; b) absorption vs. transmission; c) an identity grounded in the past and present and d) resilience with eight subordinate themes generated. The subordinate themes for both groups are discussed in relation to their specific superordinate theme. The phenomenological findings are discussed in relation to existing literature with implications and recommendations for counselling psychology. The limitations of the thesis are discussed along with recommendations for further research.

Within the framework of this PhD thesis we attempt to articulate the structural approach of social representations with the fields of emotions and intergroup relations. Thus, this work gets organized around two main lines of research. The first part (n = 340) focuses on the impact of the invalidation or the confirmation of central or peripheral cognitions on emotions with the goal of enlightening the role that the latter might play within the representational dynamic. Both research conducted in this occasion bring us to consider that the peripheral system would generates emotions that would lie at the heart of the process leading people to react to changes in their immediate environment. The second part (n = 920) focuses on the links between the structural approach and intergroup relations. It highlights the importance of the social identity function of social representations by indicating that fact of sharing (or not) a central element of a social representation would influence the way people self-categorize and categorize others as members of the group. Finally, through the consideration of the structural approach, this work emphasizes the interest of establishing connections between the social representation theory and other fields of study that are generally considered as independant

Many studies show that emotional intelligence plays an important role in a variety of working performances. If an individual has a high emotional intelligence, he or she performs better in the decision-making process, creativity, leadership, and interpersonal activities. (Van Rooy and Viswesvaran, 2004; Ambady and Gray, 2002; Grawitch, Munz, and Elliott, 2003). In general, the professional workers in the food and beverage business show a high ratio in emotional labor. They work hard and also have to deal with their emotions at work, as we know a high emotional intelligence for a professional catering staff is a significant skill. Until now, there are only a few scholars discussing the affection for an emotional intelligence of professional catering workers. In particular, the effect of enterprises expects employees to communicate important knowledge but it is often implicit and difficult to measure. A knowledge-sharing effect is bound to be affected by the impact of employee emotions. Therefore, food and beverage professionals have been selected for this survey. The differences of knowledge-sharing attitude and intention in different emotional situations from their result would help us understand the difference of emotional intelligence, of their emotional activities. This research takes place in all of Taiwan's restaurants. According to the principle of random sampling questionnaire, a questionnaire was designed with an emotional intelligence scale (Law, Wong, and Song, 2004), and knowledge sharing on the basis of situational design (Jarvenpaa and Staples, 2001). The result shows EQ, different attitudes and intentions of knowledge sharing in different emotional situations. The results of paired samples T, verification independent T-Testing and regression analysis from 759 valid questionnaires are bellow: 1. Personal knowledge sharing approach affected deeply by the influence of emotions. A positive attitude towards knowledge sharing will also be more positive. 2. Personal knowledge sharing intends to share its knowledge, and positive attitudes towards subjective individuals engaged in knowledge sharing. 3.The higher emotional quotient of food and beverage professionals have a higher standard in all kinds of emotional situations of their knowledge sharing attitudes and intentions than the lower emotional quotient. The expectation of enhancing the emotional management training for catering professionals is proved by the result from this research. There is an important relationship between knowledge sharing with staff due to the emotional intelligence of personnel’s performance and customer satisfaction.

In recent years tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. Tourism sustains a large fraction of world's economy, contributing both to governmental and private companies, which provide public access to tourism products. Tourism products in general include intangible, both high risk and involvement, goods and experiences. Through the tourism process consumers have to deal with transportation issues, travel arrangements, recreational activities, and collect lots of other travel related information. Gaining an easy access to authentic sources of travel information is the main obstacle for reduction of tourism uncertainty and quality improvement. In the past people gathered travel information from sources, such as words of mouth, travel books, newspapers and magazines, later from TV programs and advertising media. With the raising popularity and accessibility of Internet, social networking has become one of the major sources of travel-related information, including both directed advertising and generally unstructured experience-sharing medium. It follows that nowadays electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) effect cannot be underestimated. Recommendations from bloggers, blog articles and popular social networking sites are bridging the connectivity between friends and travelers all around the world. Public access to relevant information through tourism-related websites, groups, and social networking sites for Internet users created an important platform for the exchange of ideas and sharing of product experiences. For example today's most popular social networking website is Facebook. Past studies on the feedback between consumers and online sources of information were mostly directing their discussions towards the information sharing. For product developers it is, however, important to understand what influences consumers to make a purchase decision for a specific product, their repurchase intentions, and loyalty behavior of Internet consumers in general. There are a few studies related to the consumer psychology, seeking the details of causes for information share between consumers, and more importantly, influences of share and transfer of their emotions on product consumption. Most of them, however, mainly explored the influence of shared travel experiences on consumer travel intentions and attitude to tourism specific destinations. They less have discussed the changes in consumers psychological levels caused by observed traveling information, and how it affects their subsequent consumer behavior. In this work we investigate the effects of the traveling information sharing on the viewers emotions, and study how and why it influences their tourism attitude, intentions and travel behavior. Our studies are focused on Internet community, and are performed on the example of Facebook, which currently is the most-visited social networking platform. Obtained results confirm that sharing travel information on social networking websites (e.g. Facebook) indeed catalyzes the emotional reaction of the viewer. Transferring the mood and emotions, besides the general traveling information, causes a positive impact on the viewer's tourism attitude and intentions, as well as has a positive correlation with an increase in their traveling intentions. These results were summarized into a set of proposals that are relevant for tour operators or can be used as guidelines for marketing staff. They also might be useful for follow-up studies, and serve as a reference to other researchers.

In the period of knowledge economy, how to effectively comprehend and exploit it that is becoming a major management issues. However, the knowledge in the organization is an asymmetric distribution, in order to maintain the organizational advantage of competitiveness, how to improve organizational effect of knowledge sharing becoming important issues in knowledge management. Nevertheless, it counter a lot of obstruction in the process of knowledge sharing. Therefore, how to improve organizational effect of knowledge sharing is worthy to research in academics and empirical event. Past research is more to survey the will of knowledge sharing in connection with person trait, organization structure or other factor of improved will, less to discuss the emotion or communication for knowledge sharing. Therefore, this study is based of communication to explore (1)The effect of media richness for knowledge sharing, (2)The effect of emotional intelligence between media richness and knowledge sharing, (3)The effect of knowledge tacitness between media richness and knowledge sharing. The study is collected 216 valid questionnaires. This study result found that media richness for knowledge sharing has significant effect, and the emotional intelligence and knowledge tacitness as the moderators to strengthen its relevance. The higher emotional intelligence, the relation between the media richness and knowledge sharing is stronger, the same as knowledge tacitness.

Previous research has suggested that emotional expression is important for psychological adjustment to disease (e.g., Stanton et al., 2000). Indeed, experimentally prescribed emotional disclosure (traditionally, expressive writing) in the context of illness has been shown to provide benefits for mental and physical health (Pennebaker, 1993). However, the experimentally prescribed disclosure in previous research has typically been asocial, akin to writing in a diary. In contrast, the present research, by experimentally manipulating the intended audience of one’s disclosure, examined the effect of addressing one’s emotional disclosure to specific types of listener, namely a therapist or one’s spouse. Cardiac couples in which one partner had a recent cardiac event took part in the current study. First, partners completed pre-study characteristics questionnaires. Next, in a lab session, partners (in separate rooms) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) they disclosed their thoughts and feelings about the cardiac event as though speaking to their partner; (2) they disclosed their thoughts and feelings about the event as though speaking to a therapist; or (3) in a non-disclosure, control condition, they spoke about a neutral topic. Partners then engaged in a dyadic discussion about each partner’s experiences, thoughts and feelings about the cardiac event. Finally, a one-month follow-up measure assessed their relational outcomes since participation. It was hypothesized that the partner-oriented condition would lead to better outcomes than the therapist-oriented condition, and that disclosing overall would be more beneficial than non-disclosure. The study also examined the influence of pre-study characteristics on in-lab and follow-up outcomes, with the hypothesis being that participants doing less well initially (i.e., higher on psychological distress, Type D personality, emotional suppression, and lower on mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, relationship satisfaction, and perceived social support) would experience relatively more benefits from participation than those initially doing well. In addition, the study investigated whether type of event (unexpected and sudden vs. planned and more gradual) would differentially influence measures throughout the study, with the hypothesis being that couples who experienced a sudden event (MI) would be more distressed and therefore benefit more from participation than those who went through a planned procedure. Hypotheses were partially supported. Although the manipulation of disclosing to one’s partner vs. a therapist did not elicit many differences, one important and novel finding emerged regarding the orientation of disclosures: partner-disclosures yielded a more communal orientation whereas therapist-disclosures yielded a more self-focused orientation. The importance of patients’ disclosure orientation (me vs. we) was revealed when it emerged that greater communal focus led to better outcomes for both partners, but greater self-focus led to less positive outcomes for spouses. Compared to non-disclosure, disclosure generally was found to provide greater benefits for relational communication as well as marital satisfaction at follow-up. Consistent with predictions, participants who seemed most in need at pre-study (i.e., greater distress, Type D personality, emotional suppression, and less marital satisfaction and perceived support) experienced better outcomes than those who were initially well. Finally, couples who went through a sudden event were found to be more in need and benefited more than those whose event was planned, and this was especially pronounced in the effects on the spouses. Directions for future research and implications for clinical practice were discussed. For example, in addition to highlighting the value of emotional disclosure in the context of serious illness, the findings identified characteristics of cardiac couples who may be more in need of communication interventions and drew attention to important, relatively unmet needs in the patients’ spouses.

The purpose of this study was to understand the perspective of tourists on their Emotional Intelligence(EI) and Personality Traits(PT) with effectiveness of knowledge sharing while using different virtual communication tools in an ecological park in Taiwan. A self-organized questionnaire was used as a tool to understand the influence of EI and PT on knowledge sharing. Moreover, virtual communication tools were utilized to understand the relationship amongst EI and PT and knowledge sharing. The findings suggested that demographics and EI and PT were highly related to knowledge sharing. Additionally, EI and PT and tools used in virtual communities were highly related to knowledge sharing. The major results were described as follows: (1) Three questionaires of EI and personality trait and knowledge sharing were a reliable and valid instrument. (2) Tourists who own high emotional intelligence of selfawareness and regulations, they performed well on knowledge sharing in virtual community. (3) Tourists who own high personality trait of agreeableness, they perform well on knowledge sharing in virtual community.

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence programs for parents in schools in Portugal and in the world aiming the development of emotional competences in the family. Through an emotional intelligence program of 7 weekly sessions, each of them addressing a different positive emotion (gratitude, love, forgiveness, optimism / hope, creativity, joy / happiness and empathy), it was intended to verify the effectiveness of social sharing of emotions, mindfulness and positive emotions in the development of parents' emotional competences and, consequently, emotional regulation in family relationships. The convenience sample was collected in response to 6 questionnaires, consisting of 62 participants, 36 (58%) belonging to the experimental group and the remaining 26 (42%) belonging to the control group. 100% of the participants are Portuguese and residents at Leria´s region. The results reveal that after the application of the intervention program, there was an increase in the emotional abilities of the parents who participated, particularly in the capacity to deal with the emotions. Regarding family interaction, after the intervention there was an increase in authoritative parental style and greater family cohesion. As regards parental expectations, there was also an increase in this variable with the application of the program. The benefits of social sharing of emotions were better at the end of the program, which shows that the participants considered the social sharing of emotions positive and beneficial to themselves.

This study proposes a social and emotional disclosure model for understanding the mechanism that explains sharing intimate information on social media (Twitter). Previous research has indicated that some aspects of social, emotional, and attitudinal information processing are involved in disclosure of intimate information. However, these factors have been considered in isolation. This study proposes and tests a theoretically grounded model that brings all of these factors together by combining individual and group social media behaviors and online information processing in the realm of online social movements. The core explanatory model considers the impact of peer response, emotional evaluation, personal relevance, issue orientation, and motivation to post online on intimate information disclosure online. A path analysis building on four Poisson multiple regressions conducted on 28,629 #MeToo tweets evaluates the relationships proposed in the explanatory model. Results indicate that emotional evaluation and motivation to post online have direct, positive impacts on online disclosure. Other factors such as peer response, issue orientation, and personal relevance have negative direct relationships with online disclosure. Motivation to post online mediates the effects of emotional evaluation, issue orientation, and personal relevance on online disclosure while issue orientation mediates the effect of personal relevance on motivation to post online. This study offers findings that have use for practitioners interested in hashtag virality and to social media users interested in social influence and online information sharing.

The aim of this dissertation is to reassess empathy from a Schelerian perspective, taking into consideration and keeping abreast with contemporary debates on the matter. Although Scheler’s best-known books (GW II, GW VII) are being widely examined in the current phenomenological discussions on empathy and we-intentionality, the complex view that emerges from his texts of different periods is still largely overlooked by current phenomenological discussions. My studies show that a clarification of the problematic concept of empathy can be better achieved by adopting adequate Schelerian instruments, so they have been applied when investigating the relations of empathy with the phenomena of body schema, expressivity and we-intentionality. Firstly, as Scheler grounds other-perception on the expressive possibilities of the lived body, I delve into the concept of body schema, which has been scarcely studied in Schelerian terms so far. After examining the interdisciplinary literature on the topic, I highlight the viewpoint which stems from Die Idole der Selbsterkenntnis and Die Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos, since it lets us understand the body schema both as a pre-reflective dynamic structure allowing fluid interactions with the world, and as the first level of individuation. Moreover, I study two examples from the Formalismus – the “jail example” and the “example of the new-born” – and, to indicate an early distinction between the body schema and the body image, I compare the first case with the experience of solitary confinement and the second with up-to-date evidence from infant research. Through this inquiry, I draw attention to the body schema as the minimal form of self-individuation necessary for ordinary experience, and as a space between self and others which both allows empathy and is shaped by it. Secondly, by shedding light on the interrelational aspect of the body schema, I argue that others highly contribute to its development, and interactions themselves depend on bodily expressivity and affective exchange. Infant research shows the newborn’s early – if not innate – acquaintance with the implicit grasping of the affective meaning of some expressions, which can be compared with Scheler’s thesis of a universal grammar of expressivity. To ascertain how universal this grammar is to be conceived, I carry out an analysis of Darwin’s and Ekman’s accounts, and of the counterarguments to the universality of any expression. I dismiss such objections, state that a difference exists between universal spontaneous expressions and gestures, and claim that the universality of certain emotions extends beyond the visibility and expression of them (e.g. jealousy). This is followed by the claim that what is called the “direct perception” in the contemporary debate implies an axiological dimension for Scheler, a theory of values which gives a further nuance to the non-neutrality of perception. If we did not access expressivity and values directly, but through explicit attention and reasoning, our perception would become solipsistic and similar to schizophrenic autism. Thirdly, the inquiry into the roots of empathy (the lived body and expressivity), is followed by the study of the very concept of empathy. In order to reassess how Scheler can help define the difference between similar phenomena, his theory is compared to what is being discussed in current interdisciplinary debates. Although Scheler locates unipathy at the foundational level for empathy, I counter the view that sees the acquisition of an affective state as a requirement for empathy, for Scheler’s Nachfühlen presupposes detachment and awareness of the feeling pertaining to the other agent. Moreover, such a thesis does not fall into the solipsistic problems of the theory theory and the simulation theory; in particular, a focus on the latter points out that it causes egocentrism on the ethical level, and that even the embodied simulation – which states that empathy is bodily grounded – leads to multiple theoretical impasses. The final section deals with the question whether empathy or “sharing” is primary, and the attempt to understand the connections between the two. I take sharing to have a broader meaning than we-intentionality, and to start already from what Scheler calls “sharing without awareness” in unipathy and affective contagion. In this regard, the comparison with the theory of extended emotions can help understand that affects are not actually locked in the bodily dimension. Scheler’s hotly-debated example of the grieving parents and the four group-forms that he lists are taken into account to prove that empathy can have a genetic role for we-intentionality, but not always a constitutive one. The highest degree of interconnection (solidarity and absolute responsibility) also corresponds to the highest individuation (the person). Lastly, I argue that the “co-execution” (Mitvollzug) of personal acts (GW II; Cusinato 2015b, 50; 2017, 48) represents a unique kind of sharing, and read it as the ethical direction that is essentially absent in empathy, although sharing becomes possible thanks to the non-solipsistic roots examined at the beginning of the dissertation.

The Facebook platform is already one of the important communication channels for business-to-consumers today. How should a company write a post to effectively enhance the consumer's willingness to act, brand attitude and purchase intention, and increase the link between the company and the consumer. Therefore, this study will explore the impact of different message content presentations on community behavioral willingness, brand attitude and purchase intention, and observe whether there is mediating effect on information usefulness perception and emotional infection. In this study, two experiments were carried out by experimental design method. Four experimental simulation scenarios were created through the two-factor design of ‘Study 1’ 2(message presentation: exaggeration vs. level) x 2 (self-linking: high vs. low). To test consumers' willingness to act, information usefulness and emotional infection, brand attitude and willingness to purchase. It turns out that when the message is presented in a flat and self-linked content, it will enhance the consumer's community behavior, the willingness to use the information, the usefulness of the information, and the brand attitude; when the message is presented in an exaggerated way, when the content is high, the content is high. Will increase consumers' willingness to share and emotional infections. Brand attitude has a mediating effect on the way the message is presented, self-linking and willingness to buy. Then through the ‘Study 2’ 2 (message presentation: exaggeration vs. level) x 2 (message content: positive vs. negative) x 2 (picture: yes, no) three-factor design, manufacturing eight experimental simulation scenarios to test Consumers' willingness to act, information usefulness and emotional infections, brand attitudes and willingness to buy. As a result, it is found that the presentation of the message is plain and the content of the message is positive, which will enhance the consumer's usefulness of information; when the message is presented in an exaggerated manner, the content of the message is negative, and the content of the image will enhance the emotional infection of the consumer; When the content of the message is positive, it will increase the brand attitude of the consumer. Emotional infections and brand attitudes have an intermediary effect on the way the message is presented and the content of the message and the willingness of the community and the behavior of the community. And both ‘Study 1’ and ‘Study 2’ have demonstrated that community behavioral willingness and brand attitude have a significant impact on purchase intention.

This study examined the development of sharing and its associations with moral emotions in an ethnically diverse sample of 244 4-, 8-, and 12-year-old children. Sharing was measured through participants’ allocation of resources in the dictator game. Participants completed self-report measures of sympathy and anticipated their negatively and positively valenced moral emotions (i.e., guilt and pride) following actions that either violated or upheld moral norms. Results demonstrated an age-related increase in sharing between ages 4 and 8. For children with low levels of sympathy, sharing was predicted by negatively valenced moral emotions following the failure to perform prosocial duties. Sympathy also emerged as a significant predictor of sharing behaviour in early childhood. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to children’s developing norms of fairness and the emergence of two compensatory emotional pathways to altruistic sharing, one via sympathy and one via negatively valenced moral emotions.

The aim of this study is to explore the effect of table sharing on consumer emotions and behavioral intentions. This study is based on M-R environmental psychology model and it adopted experimental method to manipulate the different degree of human density, and to investigate how the conduct table sharing in different degree of human density could affect consumer emotions and behavioral intentions. Tunghai University students were recruited as research subject and 165 valid questionnaires were collected. T test and multiple linear regression were used for statistical analysis. The results revealed that different degree of human densities would lead to different effects on consumer emotion dimension, and it affects subsequent behavioral intentions, and may be negative on its reputation or make consumers unwilling to visit the restaurant again. To avoid crowded space and to improve customer's emotions in a table sharing, the research suggests that catering service industry should consider varies dimensions, which is especially on the planning of dining space and seating furnishings. In addition, to reduce the negative emotions, the catering service industry can offer dishes or beverages which is free to customer, and to increase the possibility of customer's revisiting intentions. It is also positive on making maximum utilization in restaurants.

The purpose of the following research was to test the prediction that a sense of social connectedness to a stranger would result in the tendency to share psychological states with him/her. An overview of the literature on state sharing and the psychological merging between other and self is described in Chapter 1. The first test of my prediction is provided in Chapter 2 where I demonstrate that participants who are led to feel socially connected to a confederate--by sharing idiosyncratic preferences in common with her--resulted in the propensity to take on her goals. In Chapter 3, participants who felt connected to a confederate who was asked to complete a stressful speech task experienced more stress themselves. This effect occurred in part through a sense of felt “oneness” with the confederate. Chapter 4 extended these findings by showing that socially connected participants tended to experience secondary appraisal emotions in line with the confederate’s appraisal of the stressful speech task and this occurred through a sense of felt oneness with the confederate. In Chapter 5, participants who felt connected to an outgroup member tended to experience greater empathy for another outgroup member who experienced discrimination. The implications for social interaction in general and for intergroup relations in particular are discussed in Chapter 6.

The present research proposes and tests a causal model of how people believe and share misinformative news, as opposed to informative news. In a within-subjects experiment, we presented ten news publications with political content, extracted from Facebook, to 259 Portuguese participants. We tested the impact of individuals' prior political beliefs in judging the veracity and probability of sharing informative and misinformative news publications, via perceived emotion (surprise and interest) and credibility (trustworthiness, rigorosity, impartiality). The results showed that participants' ability to distinguish truth from lies was quite limited. Misinformative and informative news were processed in a similar way. Emotional and credibility cues did not only depend on objective news content, but also on prior beliefs. Negative beliefs about the political system increased emotionality in the processing of true and false news. Moreover, greater emotionality increased perceptions of credibility, which in turn increased perceived veracity and probability of sharing news (true or false). The most distinct difference between the two types of news was that participants with more negative beliefs about the political system were more willing to share objectively misinformative news, and more surprised by news (informative or misinformative) they considered to be false, with surprise increasing the probability of sharing such news despite their perceived falsehood. We conclude that people seem to rely on emotional cues, appraised with regard to prior beliefs, and on emotionally biased credibility indicators to guess whether news are true or - independent on veracity - worth sharing.

Generation Me are people with traits such as high self-worth evaluation, lower need for social approval, externality of control, and neuroticism. These traits make Generation Me consumers more self-centered, less likely to agree and share contents other people shared. However, Generation Me is the most active users of social networking sites and content sharers. Therefore, why Generation Me consumers are willing to share contents received through social networking sites is the major issue of this study. The study adopts consumer socialization theory as research basis to examine whether traits of Generation Me will be weaken by the influences from consumer socialization process thus more willing to share digital contents posted. The current study also hypothesizes that social comparison and anticipated emotions moderates content sharing behavior of Generation Me. By using internet-base questionnaire, 401 valid online questionnaires were collected, and analyzed with SEM and Competing Model. The results suggest Generation Me traits are valid antecedents of consumer socialization theory, it has influences on social influences, social influences have significant effects on attitudes, and attitudes have direct effects on content sharing behavior. The moderators, social comparison and anticipated emotion are both proven to have moderating power on consumer socialization process. This study suggests, even though Generation Me demonstrate individualized characteristics, they are still influenced by the process of consumer socialization.

However, less people to investigate the reciprocal 、interaction、knowledge sharing、and the aspect of affect in the blog. Thus, we thought this object is worth to investigate. In this study, we use the knowledge sharing and affect dimension in the blog to investigate the attitude that we toward and intention that we want to interact with blogger. According to previous literatures, we find out the aspects to effect people knowledge sharing are altruism, expected reciprocal benefit, and trust variables. In the blog, emotion is an important factor to influence people. Thus, we increase passion and gratitude variables in this research. We use these two aspects to investigate the attitude, intention, and behavior when we interact with famous blogger. We use the SEM to explore the association in the blog, its explanatory power is 63.6%, and the model also has a good fit. It will help the blogger to run his blog.

Both Sharon Hayes’s "In the Near Future" (2005-2009) and Catherine Opie’s photographs of assemblies and rallies (2007—) take protest as a topic of investigation. Hayes enacts solo protests in urban centers and documents her project’s iterations; Opie attends organized marches and demonstrations and photographs the gathered crowds. Yet while both projects perform or picture protest in the present-day, neither is wholly of this moment. In her staged actions, Hayes holds the signs and slogans of earlier social movements, and both she and Opie create and consider the images they capture in relation to experiences and visual records which predate them. This thesis considers the ways in which expectations and desires for present and future moments are rooted in understandings of social or political pasts, investigating the work of Hayes and Opie alongside the events of Occupy Wall Street and the histories of the movements these artists reference: ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), Queer Nation, and the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968. Focusing on the role of the documentary image in the creation and remembrance of historical events, the paper looks at how the longing to reinhabit a pictured past becomes incorporated within a desire to feel historical, and how fantasies of the past and future are absorbed into the charged space of present. Concentrating first on this temporal rearrangement (referred to by Hayes as an “unspooling of history”) and turning next to the reengagement and embodiment of symbolic imagery, this thesis explores how works by Hayes and Opie emphasize disappointment in the present scene while simultaneously endeavoring to establish alternative spaces of social and political possibility—both new sites and reimagined worlds of belonging.

Recent studies support the hypothesis that oxytocin plays an important role in mother-infant interactions. The aim of the present research was to investigate the connection between Maternal Affect Attunement and levels of oxytocin in mothers and infants during early mother-infant communication, and to explore the relationship between maternal and infants' oxytocin levels. Forty three mother-infant dyads participated in the present study when infants were four months. They were observed in three conditions: 1) Baseline - where no communication took place, 2) Natural Interaction between mother and infant and 3) Modified Interactions - where natural interaction between mothers and infants was disrupted in various ways. During this procedure four saliva samples from mothers and their infants were collected to determine their levels of oxytocin at different time points. To assess individual maternal interactive style Maternal Affect Attunement (Maintaining Attention, Warm Sensitivity) was coded during the Natural Interaction. Results indicated that maternal and infants' oxytocin levels were stable at the four collection points. Maternal oxytocin levels at all collection points as well as overall mean oxytocin level were negatively related to her Warm Sensitivity. Significant positive synchronized as...

Breast cancer patients are subject to a high level of negative emotions due to their illness and treatments which tends to result in a decrease of their quality of life. This present correlational study aims to compare two levels of emotion regulation, the intrapersonal regulation and social sharing of emotions (as an interpersonal regulation process) and to explore their effect on these women’s quality of life during the time they were undergoing medical treatments. Sixty-eight women diagnosed with breast cancer participated on this study, with a mean age of 63 years old (SD=11.58). Data was collected through a self-report questionnaire that evaluated the variables of emotional experience, preference in regulation, intrapersonal regulation, social sharing of emotions and quality of life. The results revealed that the majority participants had a preference to regulate their negative emotions using only one of the regulatory levels and choose to use more the social sharing strategies and the cognitive reappraisal strategies. Moreover, the results also show that the interpersonal regulation contributed more to the women’s perception of their quality of life than intrapersonal regulation. Thus, this research concludes that social sharing is particularly helpful process for breast cancer patients to be able to deal in an effective and adaptive way with their emotional difficulties and improve their quality of life.

O cancro da mama é mundialmente a neoplasia mais comum nas mulheres (International Agency for Research on Cancer, 2018). Quer o diagnóstico, quer o tratamento têm impacto negativo a nível físico, psicológico e social (Prue, Rankin, Allen, Gracey & Cramp, 2006).
Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm in women worldwide (International Agency for Research on Cancer, 2018). Both the diagnosis and the treatment have a negative physical, psychological and social impact (Prue, Rankin, Allen, Gracey & Cramp, 2006). Generally, after this negative impact, people feel the need to share their emotions and thoughts with those around them (Marroquín, Czamanski-Cohen, Weihs & Stanton, 2016). However, the characteristics of the social environment can influence the way that sharing will be made and may inhibit the way people talk, think and feel about the disease, which will negatively affect the adjustment to cancer (Lepore & Revenson, 2007). The present study aims to evaluate how the social constraints may prevent social sharing of emotions from functioning as a mental adjustment factor for breast cancer. This study involved 79 adult women who had survived breast cancer at least two years ago. The following instruments were used: Indicators of social sharing of emotions, scale of social constraints and scale of mental adjustment to cancer. It was found that women who reported greater social constraints presented a lower mental adjustment to cancer. However, through the presence of low social constraints, social sharing is not directly associated with a greater mental adjustment to cancer in some dimensions.
