This paper examines statistical theory related to a specialized mark–recovery experiment in which a group of fish is marked with coded wire tags (CWTs) cut sequentially from a wire roll. If the roll contains several codes embedded repetitively and if fish are selected randomly for marking, the resulting marked group automatically comprises several random subgroups called "embedded replicate" groups. When the fish are recovered, each subgroup can be identified by a distinct mark. Consequently, embedded replication appears to offer an easy technique for extending the information available from a conventional CWT experiment with only one code. The paper contends, however, that embedded replicate groups inherently provide no useful information beyond that obtained by treating them as a single group. In particular, the use of embedded replicates for variance estimation can be deceptive. Analytical results supporting these claims are presented for two cases of special interest. The paper also provides an overview of statistical methods that can be used, without recourse to embedded replication, to assess uncertainty in parameters commonly measured by mark–recovery experiments.

Transition metal catalyzed coupling reaction strategy has been utilized in the synthesis of two novel BN-perylenes starting from halogenated BN-naphthalene derivatives. The molecular structures and packing modes of BN-perylenes were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction experiments. Their photophysical properties were further investigated using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Interestingly, the isosteric BN-insertion in perylene system resulted in stronger π-π stacking interaction both in solid and solution phases. The synthesized BN-perylenes are proved to be highly stable and thus provide a new valuable platform for novel organic materials applications which is otherwise inaccessible to date.

The production and evolution of cosmological defects are investigated based on the standard particle physics theory such as the electroweak unified model and quantum chromodynamics. In these models, the string type solution can be obtained. Although electroweak strings and pion strings are embedded ones and topologically unstable, they would be stabilized by high temperature plasma and bring various cosmological consequences. Moreover, the production of pion strings may be observed in the LHC experiment.

Abstract With the rapid development of the marine economy and continuous improvement of the industry, the scale of the offshore engineering is increasing. This raises interest in studying, theoretically and experimentally, gripping and bearing mechanisms for large-scale holding and lifting tools used in foundation pile installations. In this paper, the embedded gripping mechanism is studied based on the theory of elastic-plastic mechanics. The embedded and bearing performance of the tooth is simulated and the influence factors are studied. In addition, the device used in the simplified embedded experiment on the tooth of the embedded block is designed. The relationship between embedded depth, load, and tooth profile angle is identified and validated. Meanwhile, the embedded performance of linear and ring type teeth is compared experimentally in order to select the suitable type of tooth for various situations. This comparison makes the basis for designing an upending gripper for the marine pile foundation, which can realize the operation of holding the pile to prevent its falling.

In the previous research, a novel embedded multi-phase optimization methodology was proposed to solve the NC-hard difficulty of self-organizing system involving the complex correlated constraints, which has been theoretically verified. This paper takes a serial of comparable experiments to demonstrate the efficiency of the previously proposed novel methodology. First, the description of the universal problem is given, based which the mathematic model for the self-organizing system is elected. Second, a detailed example that includes complex correlated relationship is suggested. Finally, the detailed experiments verify the correct of the proposed methodology, which integrates these two sub optimization problems into a searching loop to ensure the feasibility of solution and improve the searching efficiency in the complex correlated system, with the graphics, figures, and tables.

Abstract The detection speed of target detection algorithm depends on the performance of computer equipment. Aiming at the problems of slow detection speed and difficult trade-off between detection accuracy and detection speed when the target detection model is used in embedded devices, a lightweight target detection model based on the improved Tiny YOLO-V3 is proposed. Firstly, we analyze the time consumption of each layer structure in the convolutional neural network, and do a lot of experiments and tests. Then, we compress the time-consuming structure substantially. Secondly, we propose the segmentation and fusion module to improve the detection accuracy. Finally, we use the remote sensing data set of Wuhan University for experiments, and the experimental results show that compared with Tiny YOLO-V3, the detection speed is improved by 4 times, and the accuracy is improved by 2 percentage points.

Embedding experiments within surveys has reinvigorated survey research. Several survey experiments are generally embedded within a survey, and analysts treat each of these experiments as self-contained. We investigate whether experiments are self-contained or if earlier treatments affect later experiments, which we call “experimental spillover.” We consider two types of bias that might be introduced by spillover: mean and inference biases. Using a simple procedure, we test for experimental spillover in two data sets: the 1991 Race and Politics Survey and a survey containing several experiments pertaining to foreign policy attitudes. We find some evidence of spillover and suggest solutions to avoid bias.

AbstractThe U.S. Census Bureau is investigating adaptive Nonresponse Follow-Up (NRFU) strategies for single unit businesses in the 2017 Economic Census. These collection protocols require a suite of viable alternative procedures that can be implemented. With business surveys, the majority of cognitive research and nonresponse follow-up procedures focus on collection methods that obtain valid response data from the larger businesses, and there is relatively little quantitative or qualitative research for small businesses. Moreover, the contact methods for small businesses are often constrained by budget limitations. Business programs at the U.S. Census Bureau rely on mailed reminder letters and supplemental promotional materials, with options for certified and bulk mailings. To explore the benefits and disadvantages of the proposed alternative nonresponse follow-up procedures for small businesses, we conducted a field experiment embedded in the 2014 Annual Survey of Manufactures, an annual program that has similar data collection procedures and sampling units as the Economic Census. This article describes the study and presents the results, then discusses how the recommended nonresponse follow-up procedures are implemented in an adaptive collection design test presently being conducted in the 2015 Annual Survey of Manufactures.

We propose a new clustering method based on a deep neural network. Given an unlabeled dataset and the number of clusters, our method directly groups the dataset into the given number of clusters in the original space. We use a conditional discrete probability distribution defined by a deep neural network as a statistical model. Our strategy is first to estimate the cluster labels of unlabeled data points selected from a high-density region, and then to conduct semi-supervised learning to train the model by using the estimated cluster labels and the remaining unlabeled data points. Lastly, by using the trained model, we obtain the estimated cluster labels of all given unlabeled data points. The advantage of our method is that it does not require key conditions. Existing clustering methods with deep neural networks assume that the cluster balance of a given dataset is uniform. Moreover, it also can be applied to various data domains as long as the data is expressed by a feature vector. In addition, it is observed that our method is robust against outliers. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to perform, on average, better than previous methods. We conducted numerical experiments on five commonly used datasets to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

AUC-SVM directly maximizes the area under the ROC curve (AUC) through minimizing its hinge loss relaxation, and the decision function is determined by those support vector sample pairs playing the same roles as the support vector samples in SVM. Such a learning paradigm generally emphasizes more on the local discriminative information just associated with these support vectors whereas hardly takes the overall view of data into account, thereby it may incur loss of the global distribution information in data favorable for classification. Moreover, due to the high computational complexity of AUC-SVM induced by the large number of training sample pairs quadratic in the number of samples, sampling is usually adopted, incurring a further loss of the distribution information in data. In order to compensate the distribution information loss and simultaneously boost the AUC-SVM performance, in this paper, we develop a novel structure-embedded AUC-SVM (SAUC-SVM for short) through embedding the global structure information in the whole data into AUC-SVM. With such an embedding, the proposed SAUC-SVM incorporates the local discriminative information and global structure information in data into a uniform formulation and consequently guarantees better generalization performance. Comparative experiments on both synthetic and real datasets confirm its effectiveness.

Since smelting process of electro-fused magnesia furnace is a complicated process which has characteristics like complex operation conditions, strong nonlinearities, and strong couplings, traditional linear controller cannot control it very well. Advanced intelligent control strategy is a good solution to this kind of industrial process. However, advanced intelligent control strategy always involves huge programming task and hard debugging and maintaining problems. In this paper, a real-time embedded control system is proposed for the process control of electro-fused magnesia furnace based on intelligent control strategy and model-based design technology. As for hardware, an embedded controller based on an industrial Single Board Computer (SBC) is developed to meet industrial field environment demands. As for software, a Linux based on Real-Time Application Interface (RTAI) is used as the real-time kernel of the controller to improve its real-time performance. The embedded software platform is also modified to support generating embedded code automatically from Simulink/Stateflow models. Based on the proposed embedded control system, the intelligent embedded control software of electro-fused magnesium furnace can be directly generated from Simulink/Stateflow models. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed embedded control system, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and industrial field experiments are both implemented. Experiments results show that the embedded control system works very well in both laboratory and industry environments.

Fantasy-text is a genre in which events routinely violate rules we know to be true in the real world. In four experiments, we explored the inherent contradiction between unrealistic fictional events and general world knowledge (GWK) to examine these competing information sources within the context of an extended fantasy-narrative. Experiments 1a and 1b demonstrated that fantasy-unrelated inconsistencies caused disruption to comprehension despite an abundance of contextual support for real-world impossible events that violate GWK. Experiment 2a demonstrated that fantasy-related inconsistencies caused disruption when they occurred at the local level and the fantasy-context stood in direct opposition to the target sentence. However, Experiment 2b demonstrated that disruption can be initially eliminated when readers encountered fantasy-related violations at the global level, but delayed-processing difficulty occurred on the spillover sentence, downstream of the target sentence. All four experiments are discussed within the context of the RI-Val model.

The use of embedded piezoelectric-wafer active-sensors for in-situ structural health monitoring of thin-wall structures is presented. Experiments performed on aircraft-grade metallic specimens of various complexities exemplified the detection procedures for near-field and far-field damage. For near-field damage detection, the electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance method was used. Systematic experiments conducted on statistical samples of incrementally damaged specimens were followed by illustrative experiments on realistic aging aircraft panels. For far-field damage detection, guided ultrasonic Lamb waves were utilized in conjunction with the pulse-echo technique. Systematic experiments conducted on aircraft-grade metallic plates were used to develop the method, while experiments performed on realistic aging-aircraft panels exemplified the crack detection procedure.

In order to enhance performance of automotive suspension with embedded-permanent-magnet magnetorheological (MR) damper, V-model developing flow of electronic control unit was adopted to study control system of the suspension. First of all, rapid control prototyping (RCP) system of suspension with embedded-permanent-magnet MR damper was built up based on real-time simulation platform D2P; control algorithm of fruit fly optimization algorithm– proportional-integral-derivative was designed and experiments of RCP simulation were carried out. Moreover, model of suspension with embedded-permanent-magnet MR damper was built with the instruction of magnetic field composition theory. On these bases, hardware in the loop simulation (HILS) platform was built up and HILS experiments were carried out as well. Finally, bench tests were carried out, whose results, together with simulation results, indicated that the controlling system of suspension with embedded-permanent-magnets MR damper in the given research could enhance automobiles’ ride performance and the designed control strategy and algorithm were good.

In this research, the plate embedded parts and grooved embedded parts reinforced concrete structures were investigated. Two types of plate embedded parts and three types of grooved embedded parts experienced coating treatment to enable sustainable function. Later, the ultimate failure capacity by bending experiments was conducted and compared with the theoretically calculated results. Moreover, three grooved embedded parts were simulated by ABAQUS to compare the results with the experimental exploration results, which was in close agreement with the theoretically calculated results and finite element analysis results. The result indicated that the failure modes of the embedded specimens under the five working conditions are all concrete vertebral failure. The plate-type embedded components were proved to exhibit higher ultimate bearing capacity than the grooved embedded parts. Moreover, the flexural and shear capacity of these five types of embedded parts has not been fully developed. The ultimate flexural and shear capacity of these five types of embedded parts could be further explored by adjusting the higher concrete grade.

Metamaterials are artificially structured materials and exhibit properties that are uncommon or non-existent in nature. Mechanical metamaterials show exotic mechanical properties, such as negative stiffness, vanishing shear modulus, or negative Poisson’s ratio. These properties stem from the geometry and arrangement of the metamaterial unit elements and, therefore, cannot be altered after fabrication. Active mechanical metamaterials aim to overcome this limitation by embedding actuation into the metamaterial unit elements to alter the material properties or mechanical state. This could pave the way for a variety of applications in industries, such as aerospace, robotics, and high-tech engineering. This work proposes and studies an active mechanical metamaterial concept that can actively control the force and deformation distribution within its lattice. Individually controllable actuation units are designed based on piezostack actuators and compliant mechanisms and interconnected into an active metamaterial lattice. Both the actuation units and the metamaterial lattice are modeled, built, and experimentally studied. In experiments, the actuation units attained 240 and 1510 µm extensions, respectively, in quasi-static and resonant operation at 81 Hz, and 0.3 N blocked force at frequencies up to 100 Hz. Quasi-static experiments on the active metamaterial lattice prototype demonstrated morphing into four different configurations: Tilt left, tilt right, convex, and concave profiles. This demonstrated the feasibility of altering the force and deformation distribution within the mechanical metamaterial lattice. Much more research is expected to follow in this field since the actively tuneable mechanical state and properties can enable qualitatively new engineering solutions.

Complex data types like images can be clustered in multiple valid ways. Non-redundant clustering aims at extracting those meaningful groupings by discouraging redundancy between clusterings. Unfortunately, clustering images in pixel space directly has been shown to work unsatisfactory. This has increased interest in combining the high representational power of deep learning with clustering, termed deep clustering. Algorithms of this type combine the non-linear embedding of an autoencoder with a clustering objective and optimize both simultaneously. None of these algorithms try to find multiple non-redundant clusterings. In this paper, we propose the novel Embedded Non-Redundant Clustering algorithm (ENRC). It is the first algorithm that combines neural-network-based representation learning with non-redundant clustering. ENRC can find multiple highly non-redundant clusterings of different dimensionalities within a data set. This is achieved by (softly) assigning each dimension of the embedded space to the different clusterings. For instance, in image data sets it can group the objects by color, material and shape, without the need for explicit feature engineering. We show the viability of ENRC in extensive experiments and empirically demonstrate the advantage of combining non-linear representation learning with non-redundant clustering.

<p>To effectively reduce the cost of firmware upgrade and maintenance of embedded devices, according to the requirement of a remote firmware update of embedded devices, this paper proposes a remote online firmware upgrade technology based on ZigBee. Combined with the requirements of remote online firmware upgrade application of tower-mounted amplifier, this paper analyzes and studies the system requirements, ZigBee module selection and design, software design and implementation (communication protocol design of host and slave program, breakpoint continuation function), fault analysis and other aspects. Designed experiments and tested the ZigBee connection success rate under the device startup state and normal operation state, the relationship between transmission firmware size and transmission success rate, system CPU resource consumption, transmission distance, transmission rate, the success rate, data reuse rate and acceleration ratio of breakpoint continuation function, and other performance indicators. The experimental results show that the remote online firmware upgrade technology based on ZigBee for embedded devices can better meet the system’s performance requirements in all aspects and improve the data reuse rate and acceleration ratio in the process of data transmission. The experimental results show that this scheme has the advantages of simplicity, low cost, high reliability, and broad application prospects.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

The flukes were found in their appropriate zone within four to six hours after infection. It appeared that their position shifted posteriorly during their life and that the shift proceeded more rapidly in unsuitable hosts. Hisgological sections revealed that the flukes are not deeply embedded in the host's mucosa.

This paper discusses our proposal on how to embed theorems in Z specifications. One reason behind this proposal is to ease Z users in writing theorems directly in their Z specifications. Another reason is not to overwhelm Z users in learning other language, which in this case is SAL language. In doing so, we need to inform Z2SAL programmers how to translate these embedded theorems into equivalence theorems in SAL specifications. Based on our experiments, Z2SAL is able to translate these kind of theorems and SAL model checker is also able to model check SAL specifications with theorems that are written directly in the Z specifications.

Abstract The idea of combining the high representational power of deep learning techniques with clustering methods has gained much attention in recent years. Optimizing a clustering objective and the dataset representation simultaneously has been shown to be advantageous over separately optimizing them. So far, however, all proposed methods have been using a flat clustering strategy, with the actual number of clusters known a priori. In this paper, we propose the Deep Embedded Cluster Tree (DeepECT), the first divisive hierarchical embedded clustering method. The cluster tree does not need to know the actual number of clusters during optimization. Instead, the level of detail to be analyzed can be chosen afterward and for each sub-tree separately. An optional data-augmentation-based extension allows DeepECT to ignore prior-known invariances of the dataset, such as affine transformations in image data. We evaluate and show the advantages of DeepECT in extensive experiments.

Embedded systems have become increasingly connected and communicate with each other, forming large-scaled and complicated network systems. To make their design and testing more reliable and robust, this paper proposes a formal specification language calledSENSand aSENS-based automatic test generation tool calledTGSENS. Our approach is summarized as follows: (1) A user describes requirements of target embedded network systems by logical property-based constraints usingSENS. (2) GivenSENSspecifications, test cases are automatically generated using a SAT-based solver. Filtering mechanisms to select efficient test cases are also available in our tool. (3) In addition, given a testing goal by the user, test sequences are automatically extracted from exhaustive test cases. We’ve implemented our approach and conducted several experiments on practical case studies. Through the experiments, we confirmed the efficiency of our approach in design and test generation of real embedded air-conditioning network systems.

The paper presents some results of experimental program focused on drying and shrinkage of large concrete specimens. Segments of walls with thicknesses 200, 400 and 800 mm and standard cylinders 150x300 mm were used as specimens. Each segment has embedded 4 vibrating wire strain gauges in axis plane for measurements of shrinkage strain and plastic tubes of various lengths for measurements of pore relative humidity in different depths. Relative humidity and temperature of ambient environment were not controlled, however they were recorded very closely. Measure shrinkage strains are compared with prediction based on shrinkage models. The most important predictive models are used for comparison: Model Code 2010, Eurokód 2, Model ACI 209-R92, Model B4 a Model B4s.

SUMMARYThe soft actuator is made of superelastic material and embedded flexible material. In this paper, a kind of soft tube was designed and used to assemble two kinds of pneumatic soft actuators. The experiment and finite element analysis are used to comprehensively analyze and describe the bending, elongation, and torsion deformation of the soft actuator. The results show that the two soft actuators have the best actuation performance when the inner diameter of the soft tube is 4 mm. In addition, when the twisting pitch of the torsional actuator is 24 mm, its torsional performance is optimized. Finally, a device that can be used in the production line was assembled by utilizing those soft actuators, and some operation tasks were completed. This experiment provides some insights for the development of soft actuators with more complex motions in the future.

An embedded attitude estimation system is developed for the autonomous flight of Quad-Rotor UAVs. The system hardware is composed of a DSP processor and low-cost MEMS sensors including a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer. A Complementary Filter fused the advantages of the gyroscope and accelerometer is designed and embedded on the DSP processor to estimate the real-time attitude. Ground testing experiments show that the system could meet the accuracy and robustness requirements for the Quad-Rotor UAVs attitude estimation.

Nowadays embedded parts which connect steel members with concrete structures have frequently emerged in civil engineering; however the existing design code for embedded parts cannot satisfy the increasing demand of engineering as it was derived from limited experiments. In the paper, a finite element study on embedded parts with big-diameter reinforcing bars under shear force is conducted. The aim of the study was to fully investigate the mechanical performances of embedded parts under shear force using a three-dimensional finite element analysis with the help of a commercial software ANSYS. Cross-section internal force of anchor bar, embedded part deformation, interaction force between anchor bar and concrete, and friction force were investigated in order to well know the system response. The results show that the shear capacity of embedded part obtained from finite element analysis is conservative.

Schlenker (2010) recently provided data from English and French suggesting that,contrary to standard assumptions (McCawley, 1982; Potts, 2005; Arnold, 2007; AnderBoiset al., 2011), non-restrictive relative clauses (NRCs) can take narrow scope under operators ofthe sentence within which they are embedded. This paper presents three experiments in Germanconfirming this claim. In E-experiments, the network servers often used to manage experimental plants centrally require high power consumption. In order to reduce such power consumption, cost and size, this paper presents a portable embedded web controller (PEWC) combining embedded technology with Linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP (LAMP), which is the solution stack most widely used globally in Web development. Instead of using servers, the PEWC is used to build a distributed E-experiment system that enables users to do remote control through web pages online. Experimental results show that this system successfully controls robot-arm systems remotely and reduces power consumption by 99%, cost by 90% and size by 95%.

In the conventional DC-AC inverter consisting of two DC-DC converters with unipolar output capacitors, the output capacitor voltages of the DC-DC converters must be higher than the DC input voltage. To overcome this weakness, this paper proposes a single-phase DC-AC inverter consisting of two embedded Z-source converters with bipolar output capacitors. The proposed inverter is composed of two embedded Z-source converters with a common DC source and output AC load. Though the output capacitor voltages of the converters are relatively low compared to those of a conventional inverter, an equivalent level of AC output voltages can be obtained. Moreover, by controlling the output capacitor voltages asymmetrically, the AC output voltage of the proposed inverter can be higher than the DC input voltage. To verify the validity of the proposed inverter, experiments were performed with a DC source voltage of 38 V. By controlling the output capacitor voltages of the converters symmetrically or asymmetrically, the proposed inverter can produce sinusoidal AC output voltages. The experiments show that efficiencies of up to 95% and 97% can be achieved with the proposed inverter using symmetric and asymmetric control, respectively.
