Field identification of the White-footed Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis) and Long-tailed Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus gracilis) is difficult because of their similar external morphology. Peromyscus were sampled by live-trapping during a five-year period (1992-1996) at the Arnot Teaching and Research Forest, Van Etten, New York and identified to species by electrophoresis of their salivary amylase. No electromorphs were shared between P. leucopus and P. maniculatus, thus permitting unambiguous species identification of individuals. Means and ranges of four external measurements (ear, head-body, hind-foot, and tail) and tail to head-body ratio were determined for amylase-genotyped live mice. Although some body measurements did differ on average between the two species (ear, head-body, and tail for adults; hind-foot and tail for juveniles), the ranges of these overlap considerably. When the four external measurements (excluding the tail to head-body ratio) were used to construct two discriminant-function equations, they yielded correct identification of 80% of the adult P. l. noveboracensis and P. m. gracilis assessed excluding juveniles, and 71% of adult and juvenile mice combined. The function reported here allows partial field identification, but genetic analysis remains the only reliable field method for differentiation between live P. l. noveboracensis and P. m. gracilis. There are often several rodent species included in the small mammal communities in orchard agro-ecosystems. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the population levels of Deer Mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and Yellow-pine Chipmunks (Tamias amoenus) would be enhanced in old field compared with orchard habitats. Rodent populations were intensively livetrapped in replicate old field and orchard sites over a four-year period at Summerland, British Columbia, Canada. Deer Mouse populations were, on average, significantly higher (2.5 – 3.4 times) in the old field than orchard sites in summer and winter periods. Mean numbers/ha of Deer Mice ranged from 12.1 to 60.4 in old field sites and from 3.3 to 19.9 in orchard sites. Breeding seasons in orchards were significantly longer than those in old field sites, in terms of proportion of reproductive male Deer Mice. Recruitment of new animals and early juvenile survival of Deer Mice were similar in orchard and old field sites. Populations of Yellow-pine Chipmunks ranged in mean abundance/ha from 5.6 – 19.0 in old field sites and from 1.9 – 17.5 on one orchard site, with no difference in mean abundance in 2 of 4 years of the study. Recruitment and mean survival of Yellow-pine Chipmunks also followed this pattern. This study is the first detailed comparison of the population dynamics of these rodent species in old field and orchard habitats. These species should be able to maintain their population levels and help contribute to a diversity of small mammals in this agrarian landscape.

Molybdenum is a common metal used to fabricate field emission devices.1-2 However, during extended operation, Mo cathodes exhibit current instabilities, which are thought to arise from adsorption of contaminants on the emitter surface. Coating Mo field emitters with diamond may enhance the current stability, as well as the total emission current. An understanding of the diamond nucleation mechanism is crucial for depositing consistent, uniform coatings on the emitters, and therefore producing reliable devices. To the author's knowledge, little information exists about the mechanism of diamond nucleation on these highly curved Mo surfaces.In order to study the diamond nucleation mechanism, the morphology of the diamond coating and the structure of the diamond/Mo interface were analyzed by high resolution TEM. Emitters make excellent TEM specimens, since no further sample preparation is required after the diamond deposition; artifacts thus do not become an issue in interpreting the TEM results. Figure 1 shows that the films have a general morphology of clustered nanocrystalline particles.

The adoption of the Genocide Convention in 1948 was accompanied by the emergence of genocide as a field of study, first in the form of Holocaust Studies, followed by Genocide Studies, then Comparative Genocide Studies and, most recently, Critical Genocide Studies. Over the last 20-30 years, the field of genocide studies has greatly expanded. According to Alexander Hinton, “As the outlines of the field emerge more clearly, the time is right to engage in critical reflections about the state of the field.” This article seeks to enhance the field of genocide studies by answering Hinton’s call for reflective analysis. It does so by analyzing every original research article published in the Journal of Genocide Research (1999-2018) and Genocide Studies and Prevention (2006-2018), based on case of genocide studied; the canon location of the case; method of genocide; and the type of government of the perpetrator. The results of this research show that the field remains dominated by particular understandings genocide and which types of governments are most associated with the crime.

The biology of the East Asian caddisfly Anisocentropus pallidus (Martynov 1935), Calamoceratidae, was studied in both the laboratory and field in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The egg and early instar larva are newly described. The larvae are abundant in dense accumulations of plant detritus and eat the detritus in littoral areas of ponds in marshes. Their cases are flat, oval and made of two leaf pieces with anteromesal slits, posterior concavities and interior silken chambers. Just after eclosion, a temporary cylindrical tubular case is made of amorphous detritus. The pupal case is also a flattened oval with small anterior and posterior openings on dorsal valves and attached on hard leaves and stems. The prepupal + pupal stage requires 15–19 days at 15–17˚C. Adults appear from June to September with peak emergence during mid June. Females have mature ovaries at emergence. A one− or two-year life cycle is suggested by seasonal changes of instar frequency and larval weight.

<p>Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui profil literasi statistik siswa kelas IX ditinjau dari gaya kognitif <em>field dependent</em> dan <em>field independent</em>. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di MTs Assa’adah II. Subjek penelitian sebanyak dua siswa yang terdiri dari satu siswa bergaya kognitif <em>field dependent</em> dan satu siswa bergaya kognitif <em>field independent</em>. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu melalui tes dan wawancara. Tes yang digunakan terdiri dari tes GEFT untuk mengelompokkan gaya koginitif siswa dan tes literasi statistik untuk memperoleh data profil literasi statistik siswa berdasarkan kemampuan matematika yang setara. Sedangkan, metode wawancara digunakan untuk memperoleh informasi mengenai proses siswa dalam mengerjakan soal. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, siswa yang memiliki gaya kognitif <em>field dependent </em>kurang mampu membaca data dalam tabel, tidak mampu menentukan data yang akan disajikan ke dalam diagram batang dan tidak mampu menyajikan diagram batang dengan benar. Sedangkan, siswa yang memiliki gaya kognitif <em>field independent </em>mampu membaca data yang disajikan, mampu menentukan data yang akan disajikan ke dalam diagram batang dan mampu menyajikan diagram batang dengan benar.</p>

Анотація:
Recognizing taxonomic units in the field complement classical museum taxonomy. It contributes to geographical distribution assessment making possible the recognition of conservation status of conflictive and similar species. In this paper, we provide unambiguous field characters distinguishing two similar species of Oecanthus in Southern Europe: Oecanthus dulcisonans Gorochov and O. pellucens (Scopoli) that are frequently misidentified. Whereas O. dulcisonans is a southern rare species with an uncertain status and distribution, O. pellucens is common and widely distributed in the Palaearctic. Song is the easiest way to distinguish between the two species in the field being continuous in the former and with regular schemes in the latter. Further, O. dulcisonans is larger, with relatively longer inner wings protruding more apically from tegmen, and with a more slender sternum, morphological traits that are detected simply with a hand magnifier.
