Abstract The research field of English as a lingua franca (ELF) is concerned with global communication among English users, in which English is most often a part, not the whole, of their communicative repertoires. ‘The notion of English as a multilingua franca (EMF) repositions English within multilingualism to foreground multilingual situations, influences, and practices inherent in global encounters (Jenkins, 2015). This paper attempts to further the theoretical development of EMF in light of the theories du jour in applied linguistics, namely the ‘trans-’ theories of translanguaging and transmodal, transcultural communication. A review and integration of literature on these areas makes clear more similarities than differences between EMF and ‘trans- ’ theories, which together highlight the limited role of any named language, mode, or culture in both online and offline interactions at a global scale. It is hoped that beyond any ideologically fixed construct, future research in the ELF field explores how English users collaboratively (or uncollaboratively) take advantage of wider multilingual, multimodal, and multicultural resources while engaging in translingual, transmodal, and transcultural practices.

AbstractIn the past years, it has become generally accepted that the social dynamics of ELF cannot be captured by the notion of a speech community. Instead, the concept Community of Practice (CoP) has gained widespread currency in ELF research. While applications of the CoP framework have given rise to valuable insights, even ELF scholars who work with the concept often acknowledge its limitations. Since factors like situationality and ad hoc negotiation are seen as particularly important in ELF interactions, many ELF researchers have recently emphasized the transient and dynamic nature of the social clusters in which ELF communication typically takes place, especially in light of the multilingualism and language contact. This paper offers a first sketch of how the social dimension of ELF might on many occasions be conceptualized as involving Transient International Groups (TIGs) rather than more stable CoPs. Building on the idea that the Individual Multilingual Repertoires (IMRs) of ELF speakers make up a Multilingual Resource Pool (MRP) in each ELF interaction, the paper argues that ELF theory-building and descriptive work would benefit from exploring the group and the development dimension of ELF more thoroughly than has been done so far. In support, the paper provides a qualitative case study of a TIG in the leisure domain of VOICE. This case study illustrates how an in-depth micro-diachronic analysis of multilingual practices and instances of explicit reference to languages, countries, places, etc., can make visible the group’s development of shared translingual and transcultural territory.

In intercultural and transcultural communication contexts within multilingual education, English learners should be able to communicate and interact with other people who have different linguistic and cultural background. For this reason, intercultural contents should be incorporated in EFL textbooks to promote learners’ intercultural competences and communication skills. The contents are designed with containing not only Anglo-American and British cultural dimensions but also learners’ home and foreign cultures. It is to prepare learners to become global citizens. The principal aim of this study is to investigate how teachers apply English textbooks to promote learners’ intercultural competences and intercultural communicative skills within multilingual education. This article argues that intercultural representations incorporated in EFL textbooks are used as useful resources for helping learners develop their intercultural competences and communication skills. also, the ways teachers carry out their teaching in the classes are measured. The results of this study show that the teachers employ EFL textbooks effectively with utilizing potential teaching materials containing cultural values to promote learners’ intercultural competences and communicative skills within multilingual education. This study also suggests that English teachers needs reinforcement in multilingual education.

This article discusses the teaching of intercultural and transcultural awareness together with language learning in foreign language contexts. Ensuing a brief discussion of what language, culture and its forms mean, we illustrate the relationship between intercultural and transcultural competence, and the development of communication skills in the foreign language framework for teaching EFL (English as Foreign Language) students. The author draws attention to the importance of developing students’ intercultural research abilities utilizing the transcultural communication competence notion. We show how intercultural orientations and transcultural communication competence affect the students’ framework and their career dimensions. The author illuminates the activities and approaches that develop communication skills. The article concludes with an underscoring of the critical challenges that teachers encounter and their potential solutions. In ELF contexts both linguistic and cultural practices cannot be taken for granted, but they need to be jointly negotiated by interactants to create a shared frame of reference. Therefore, in this dissertation I suggest the expression ‘ELF Transcultural Communication’ to highlight the necessary link between ELF research and Intercultural Communication studies and I propose ‘ELF Transcultural Competence’ as a new model of reference for the skills that are necessary to effectively and appropriately achieve the speaker’s communicative goal(s) in ELF transcultural contexts. Following this perspective, the ability to negotiate mutual understanding and to strategically manage the interaction is fundamental. Hence, the study aims at investigating how communication strategies are used in ELF Transcultural Communication in the meaning making process and in the negotiation of cultural concepts and at exploring how their use can be included in an ELF-aware pedagogy. First, an overview of research on ELF and on Intercultural Communication is provided, discussing the concepts of language and culture as complex systems that emerge in interaction. Successively, traditional conceptualisations of Communicative Competence and Intercultural Communicative Competence are called into question, remarking their unsuitability for ELF transcultural contexts. In turn, the framework of ELF Transcultural Competence, based on the concepts of ELF Competence and Intercultural Awareness, is discussed as a more appropriate model for these contexts. The use of communication strategies in ELF Transcultural Communication are then outlined, discussing how meaning and understanding are negotiated and co-constructed in interaction and the relevance of communication strategies in these processes. The communication strategies that are analysed in the data have been selected from ELF literature on the topic: backchannels, lexical anticipations, lexical suggestions and corrections, over multilingual resources, reformulations, repetitions, and spellings. The data set of the dissertation is based on two ELF corpora, the VOICE-Leisure sub-corpus and the ViMELF corpus, and has been analysed through a mixed method approach that combines Conversation Analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings confirm what has been observed in ELF studies on the topic and they show that communication strategies are productive tools to actively co-construct mutual understanding and to negotiate meaning in interaction, playing a fundamental role in ELF Transcultural Communication. In addition, the strategic moves examined show a frequent co-occurrence, with several functions performed at once, showcasing how meaning can be negotiated in different ways, and how strategic communication is a fundamental aspect to consider when investigating ELF interactions. Finally, the discussion of the pedagogical implications is presented. The inclusion of the use of communication strategies aimed at strategically managing interaction in an ELF-aware pedagogy is introduced and illustrated through some practical activities.
