Повний текст джерелаAt the frontier between entertainment industries and cultural production, vital content provider of digital economy, the motion picture industry raises several interesting questions in the field of economics and marketing. This dissertation tackles three important empirical questions in the motion picture industry using different methods (panel data models, difference-in-differences, and structural econometrics) and brings a new theoretical development about the nested logit model. The first chapter deals with online consumer reviews, also known as electronic word of mouth (eWOM), and focuses on the extent to which prerelease information alters the effect of eWOM on movie sales. The second chapter studies the collateral damages of the French anti-piracy law known as Hadopi on box office performances of movies, by carefully ruling out alternative explanations of the result. The third chapter investigates on seasonality in the French movie industry. The analysis separately identifies and decomposes movie sales into the number and quality of available movies, underlying seasonal demand, weather shocks, and national sales promotion by estimating a three-level nested logit model of weekly demand accounting for congestion on movie theaters' screens. The model is used to identify optimal release periods depending on the types of movie

Humans have a high ability to extract visual data information acquired by sight. Trought a learning process, which starts at birth and continues throughout life, image interpretation becomes almost instinctively. At a glance, one can easily describe a scene with reasonable precision, naming its main components. Usually, this is done by extracting low-level features such as edges, shapes and textures, and associanting them to high level meanings. In this way, a semantic description of the scene is done. An example of this, is the human capacity to recognize and describe other people physical and behavioral characteristics, or biometrics. Soft-biometrics also represents inherent characteristics of human body and behaviour, but do not allow unique person identification. Computer vision area aims to develop methods capable of performing visual interpretation with performance similar to humans. This thesis aims to propose computer vison methods which allows high level information extraction from images in the form of soft biometrics. This problem is approached in two ways, unsupervised and supervised learning methods. The first seeks to group images via an automatic feature extraction learning , using both convolution techniques, evolutionary computing and clustering. In this approach employed images contains faces and people. Second approach employs convolutional neural networks, which have the ability to operate on raw images, learning both feature extraction and classification processes. Here, images are classified according to gender and clothes, divided into upper and lower parts of human body. First approach, when tested with different image datasets obtained an accuracy of approximately 80% for faces and non-faces and 70% for people and non-person. The second tested using images and videos, obtained an accuracy of about 70% for gender, 80% to the upper clothes and 90% to lower clothes. The results of these case studies, show that proposed methods are promising, allowing the realization of automatic high level information image annotation. This opens possibilities for development of applications in diverse areas such as content-based image and video search and automatica video survaillance, reducing human effort in the task of manual annotation and monitoring.

ABSTRACT The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of electronic picture book and paper version picture book on junior high school students’ English reading comprehension. The research aims to answer the following questions: (1) Do the students under the electronic picture book instruction perform better than the paper version picture book instruction on English reading comprehension? (2) How do the students react to the electronic picture book instruction? During the eight-week study, 70 ninth-graders in a junior high school in northern Taiwan were divided into two groups—the CALL group and the control group; the former group read electronic picture books and the latter group read paper version picture books. Each group had an English reading comprehension test after reading each picture book. The scores of the tests were gathered and analyzed to examine whether there were any significant differences between the two groups. After the study, only the experimental group was asked to answer a questionnaire of three open-ended questions regarding reading the electronic picture books. The data obtained from the study were analyzed from two perspectives. First, the scores of the English reading comprehension tests were collected and a t-test was applied to investigate the significant difference between the application of electronic picture book instruction and paper version picture book instruction. Second, the responses of the questionnaire were classified and described by the researcher to examine the participants’ reactions to the electronic picture book teaching. Results of the study revealed: (1) There was no significant difference between the two groups on the English reading comprehension tests. Besides, the control group performed better than the experimental group. (2) With respect to the responses to the questionnaire, most of the participants showed their interest in the electronic picture books and indicated that they learned more with the help of the computer (CALL). Based on the findings of the study, further pedagogical implications and suggestions for future researches are provided at the end of the study.

E-reading is an evitable trend. In recent years, digital publications and e-books have drawn sustained attention from domestic people. However, electronic picture storybooks still have not won the favor of most domestic consumers. Over the past few years, research of purchase involvement has been the mainstream in the area of marketing decision science. Many studies of consumer purchase decisions have pointed out that purchase involvement affects purchase behavior and product evaluation from pre-search to post-search. In this study, the decision processing stage of the EKB model was used as the research framework. Based on EKB model, purchase involvement, and demographic variables, this study investigated characteristics of consumer purchase behaviors and the key factors affecting their purchase decisions. A questionnaire was developed to collect the primary data. The sample population consisted of consumers with experience of purchasing electronic picture storybooks using convenience sampling method during Mar 31 ~ May 12, 2010. From survey participants, 872 responses were collected, and 30 of them were invalid and excluded. The valid response rate was 96.5%. Among the valid responses, 320 responses (36.7%) were provided by the “consumption group” and 522 responses (63.3%) by the “non-consumption group”. The survey focus was placed on current use, demand, and preference for electronic picture storybooks among participants in the “consumption group”. Through statistical analysis of the data, this study obtained the following conclusions: 1.Consumers’ demand for electronic picture storybooks was mainly based on interactivity of digital multimedia which they believed could enhance children’s abilities to memorize and observe, ensure both intellectual and inspirational development, and offer entertainment and education at the same time. 2.95% of the consumers worried that long-term use of electronic picture storybooks may cause negative effects on children’s vision, and such concern was the main reason why they seldom purchased electronic picture storybooks for their children. Therefore, whether preventive measures or effective solutions can be provided to minimize the impact of long-term reading of electronic picture storybooks would be an important factor affecting consumers’ purchase intention. 3.In terms of consumer preferences, 55.6% of the consumers preferred physical books after using electronic picture storybooks. In addition to reading on software or hardware facilities, they also expected preservation of the feeling of reading physical books and presentation of book contents using digital multimedia. 4.Overall, although 63.3% of the consumers were in the “non-consumption group”, 53.8% showed intention to purchase and use electronic picture storybooks in the future. Among consumers in the “consumption group”, 67.2% stated that they would purchase and use more electronic picture storybooks in the future, and 56.6% stated that they would be willing to become loyal customers of electronic picture storybooks. These figures indicate that there is room for further development of the electronic picture storybooks market.

The cosmetic industry in Taiwan is much competitive. To raise market share and enhance brand image, cosmetics manufacturers continue their research and development in new ingredients and new products. Facing a lot of different brands, the perceived risk of consumers is rising. Consumers would search product information through various channels to avoid risks from using products improperly. Searching information on Internet is commonly adopted and is an important information source to decision making. The types of E-WOM are divided into positive and negative information. Many past researches showed that negative comments obtained more intention from consumers than positive recommendation (Lee & Park, 2007; Sen & Lerman, 2007; Morgan, Pritchard & Piggott, 2003; Ramaswami, 2001). Past E-WOM researches focused on the impact of word message on consumer’s attitude. Today, the development of internet changes the types of information sharing and consumers can upload the pictures or graphs to the internet easily. Compared with oral and word messages, consumers have more trust on the message delivered by visual pictures (Mitche, 1986). The design and expression of words and pictures in an advertisement are critical to the success of advertisements. We hope the result of the research could help cosmetics manufacturers to attract more customers by using internet marketing, and to explore the target audience more successfully. This paper will discuss the impacts of the positive and negative internet information on consumer’s attitude to cosmetics. Besides, we will discuss the impacts of the messages with or without pictures on consumer’s attitude to cosmetics. We will conduct a survey to collect information from cosmetics users through the experimental design. The research results shows negative information have more impact on consumers than positive information. The message with pictures hasn’t more impact on consumers than without pictures because of the level of consumer involvement. There are the interactions between “Positive v.s. Negative” and “Picture Messages v.s. Word Message” .

The purposes of this action research on incorporating electronic picture book into online Mandarin speaking class are twofold:(a) to demonstrate the effectiveness of story-telling using e-picture books on Mandarin learner’s oral communication ability and (b) to establish the use of e-picture books as a teaching model for online Mandarin speaking class. The participants of this action research are novice high learners of a language study program for expatriate youth, whose Mandarin oral communication ability declined dramatically after returning to their country of origin. Because the youths today prefer absorbing information via multimedia and are used to interact with people on the internet, the researcher designed electronic picture books, adapted the stories, and made it into a coherent plot which structure are repetitive, and the modified plot fit the novice learner’s level. The researcher used the e-picture books and performed 2 cycles of action research, the first cycle lasted 4 months, and the second one lasted 2 months. First, data on the participants’ preference and language proficiency were collected and analyzed. According to the data, the researcher chose a picture book, modified it into an electronic picture book, and then proceeded to the first cycle of the study. Afterwards, based on the results of the oral test and questionnaire that the learners took, and the reflection of the researcher, the researcher re-selected and designed another e-picture book for the second cycle. The data collection, analysis, and the teaching reflection of the second cycle are combined with the instructor’s teaching journal, feedbacks of the learners, results of their oral tests, as well as the peer teacher’s class observation records. After the two action research cycles, there are 7 conclusions related to e-picture book and online teaching that the researcher would like to discuss. First, combining the use of electronic picture book with a story teaching approach, elevated learner’s concentration in class and increased their learning experience. Second, the electronic picture book material designed by the researcher was easy to use, which lessened the cognitive load during learning new material. Third, student investigation and training, electronic picture book modification, question discussion, and interactive practice are the 4 steps of the teaching model which is suitable for incorporating e-picture book into online Mandarin speaking class was established. Fourth, by repeating stories and verbally responding to homework questions, learners built up their colloquial ability. Fifth, the content of students’ homework and in-class discussion related to real life issues, which served to enhance learners’ memory of content vocabulary and grammar. Sixth, using suitable story teaching approach and questioning strategies increased the interactiveness between the teacher and the learners. Seventh, by using online tools’ function properly, such as interactive tools and circling, the fun in teaching and learning exponentially expanded. In addition, the researcher also had suggestions on teaching activity design and teaching practice, as well as pointed out directions for future study.

The purpose of this study is to explore young children’s reading comprehension of picture books and electronic books (e-books). The subjects were 13 five- to six-year-old children. The children were paired into two groups according to their sex, language ability, the caregiver’s socioeconomic status and the quality of joint book reading at home. Each group participated in two experimental sessions with one session reading a picture book and the other reading an e-book. The sequence of reading medium of two groups is counter-balanced. The study was conducted in four weeks with one session per week. Each session, lasting about 30-40 minutes, consisted of a picture book or e-book reading and following a reading comprehension test. This study analyzed both the qualitative data such as children’s oral responses as well as the quantitative data such as children’s answers to reading comprehensive questions and their arrangements of pictures that come from the story. The results indicated that young children’s total reading comprehension had no significant difference between two reading medium. Furthermore, children’s episode information scores in picture book reading and e-book reading were correlated. Also, the child’s age and verbal ability were associated with total reading comprehension in e-book reading, while the caregiver’s educational levels were positively associated with children’s scores in non-episode information in e-book reading. The qualitative analysis revealed that young children may inquire printed words while reading picture books to obtain information. Even though young children of this age had started to notice printed words, they still relied heavily on pictures to help comprehend the story. Finally, the study provided suggestions for further studies, caregivers and teachers.

This study aimed to explore the experimental effects and the feasibility on the electronic picture book teaching on children’s language comprehension and expression. Hence, this study adopted “nonequivalent group pretest-posttest” experimental design and “participant observation” to observe and record the effects of experimental teaching on children language comprehension and expression and their class performance. The participants of the study were thirty young children aged five, divided into two groups. The theme of the picture books focused on the family relationship and the picture books selected properly for young children were made into slides. Young children in the group of electronic picture book teaching took the teaching activities for five weeks, twice a week. The research tools were “easy-and-quick intelligence scale for children” and “receptive and expressive vocabulary test (second edition).” Besides, the experimental results were analyzed through one-way ANOVA. The results of the study are as follows: I.There was no difference between the two groups of young children in their “lexicon memorization” performance with “easy-and-quick intelligence scale for children.” However, when it comes to the performance on the “lexicon comprehension” with “easy-and-quick intelligence scale for children” and the production of “naming, categorization, definition, inference and the overall vocabulary expression” with “receptive and expressive vocabulary test,” the experimental group performed better than the control group. That is, the electronic picture book teaching has some good effects on young children’s “language comprehension.” II.Regarding the differences between the two groups of young children’s performance of “naming, categorization, definition, inference and the overall vocabulary expression” with “receptive and expressive vocabulary test,” the experimental group was superior to the control group. To wit, the electronic picture book teaching has some good influence on young children’s “language expression.” III.The researcher collected “working sheet” and “observation form” of the experimental teaching, randomly selecting one young child’s data from “grandparent- grandchildren relationship,” “parent-child relationship” and “sibling relationship” respectively through the ten teaching activities, and analyzing the feasibility on how the teaching program was applied to language comprehension and expression. The young children’s positive response to the classes indicated that electronic picture book teaching activities were generally favored by young children. IV.Overall, the teaching activity had great experimental effects and it’s practical for application and development.

Abstract The issue on discovering pupil’s various intelligences and promoting their potentials through teaching activities has always been major concern of educators. The main objective of this study was to determine whether students who were enrolled in classes using electronic picture storybooks significantly increased their multiple intelligences. This study followed a quasi-experimental research design. Two fifth grade classes in an elementary school of TaoYuan County are the study objects. Both treatment and control classes were in the same school. The treatment group was applied an instructional intervene of electronic picture storybooks, and the control group used the demonstration of application software that had previously been adopted for use in the school. The dependent variable is the posttest result of multiple intelligences evaluation. For both the treatment group and the control group, there was a pre-test score and a post-test score. Only students who completed both the pre- and post-tests were included in this analysis. The researcher wanted to find out whether there was a significant difference between the treatment and control groups on the post-test, after adjusting for the pre-test level, by using a single factor Analysis of Covariance (oneway ANCOVA). Furthermore, examine the consequence of students’ perception toward their assignments. This study acquired three conclusions. First, the experimental group showed significant improvement in their linguistic intelligence and interpersonal intelligence. Second, students express their self-observations of learning engagement and progress. Third, the output of experimental group is better than those of the control group. According to the conclusions, suggestions on the application at other elementary schools as well as further research on practical educational exercise are proposed.

The main purpose of this study is to ascertain the vocabularies recognition and third grade reading interest with the effects of electronic and paper picture books with characters education in elementary school. Two differing picture diagram types: respectively of electronic and paper with matching vocabulary quizzes were employed in this experiment study to gauge the reading level interests of third grade elementary students. Two different classes with a total of 47 students at an elementary school in Kaohsiung participated in this study. The students were divided into two separate classes of an experiment and control group. The first class (23 students total) received English electronic picture books as the experimental group. The second class (24 students total) received English paper picture books as the control group. The electronic and paper storybooks both contained identical information and pictures. A total of four picture books in each format of were taught to each of the two experimental and control groups within two weeks. An English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition Likert scale questionnaire in paper form were administered to both groups respectively, after their quiz study. At the end of the two week instructional teaching period, the following results of numerical data obtained from the English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition Likert scale questionnaire were noted and recorded for a comparative analysis. The results were as follows: Both groups improved in their English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition tests, however the experimental group showed a higher and better reading level interest feedback from the electronic experimental group in comparison with the paper control group. The experimental group with electronic versions objectively learned better in pace as opposed to the control group with paper version. The SPSS numerical data generated will also reflect and support the data feedback results obtained from the English Vocabulary Word and Pictures Recognition Likert scale questionnaire.
