Cluster radioactivity is a rare cold nuclear process which is intermediate between alpha decay and spontaneous fission. The present work is a theoretical investigation of the feasibility of alpha decay and cluster radioactivity from proton rich Osmium (Os) isotopes with mass number ranging from 162–190. Osmium forms a part of the transition region between highly deformed and spherical nuclei. Calculations have been done using unified fission model and Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) theory. We have chosen only those decays with half-lives falling in measurable range. Geiger–Nuttall plot has been successfully reproduced. The isotope which is most favorable to each decay mode has a magic daughter nucleus.

Abstract In the present work, we have studied the alpha-like clusters (8Be, 12C, 16O, 20Ne, and 24Mg) decay half-lives in the trans-tin region for (106–116Xe, 108–120Ba, 114–126Ce, and 118–128Nd) and in transition metal region for (156–166Hf, 158–172W, 160–174Os, 166–180Pt, and 170–182Hg) nuclei. These half-lives have been calculated using the shape parametrization model of cluster decay in conjunction with the axially deformed relativistic mean-field model with the NL3* parameter set. They are also compared with the half-lives computed using the latest empirical relations, namely universal decay law and the scaling law was given by Horoi et al. It has been observed that in the trans-tin region the minimum cluster decay half-lives are found at nearly doubly magic or doubly magic daughter 100Sn nucleus (N d = 50, N d is the neutron number of the daughter nucleus) and in transition metal region at N d = 82, which is a magic number. The Geiger–Nuttal plots of half-lives showing Q dependence for different alpha-like clusters from various cluster radioactive emitters are found to vary linearly.

In this proceeding we report on alpha particle emission through the nuclear break-up in the reaction 40 Ca on a 40 Ca target at 50A MeV. It is observed that alpha particles are emitted to the continuum with very specific angular distribution during the reaction. The alpha particle properties seem to be compatible with an alpha cluster in the daughter nucleus that is perturbed by the short range nuclear attraction of the collision partner and emitted as described by a time-dependent theory. This mechanism offers new possibilities to study alpha particle properties in the nuclear medium.

Experimental data of the double-differential spectra of light particles emitted at pre-equilibrium stage of nuclear processes were obtained at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro for the heavy-ion reactions 130 and 250 MeV 16 O + 116 Sn . Light charged particles were measured in coincidence with evaporation residues in order to avoid unwanted competing mechanisms. The experimental data were collected in a wide angular range from 29 to 82 degrees in the laboratory system. Theoretical model was developed in order to describe simultaneously evaporative and pre-equilibrium emission of the light particles in heavy-ion reactions. Griffin exciton model was used for the description of the pre-equilibrium stage of the compound nucleus formation, while the equilibrium evaporation processes were analyzed in the framework of the statistical theory of heavy-ion reactions. Experimental data were compared with the results of the model calculations and new approach was suggested to take into account alpha cluster formation in the projectile nucleus by measuring and analyzing pre-equilibrium alpha-particle spectra.

Abstract For more than half a century, the structure of $^{12}$C, such as the ground band, has been understood to be well described by the three $\alpha$ cluster model based on a geometrical crystalline picture. On the contrary, recently it has been claimed that the ground state of $^{12}$C is also well described by a nonlocalized cluster model without any of the geometrical configurations originally proposed to explain the dilute gas-like Hoyle state, which is now considered to be a Bose–Einstein condensate of $\alpha$ clusters. The challenging unsolved problem is how we can reconcile the two exclusive $\alpha$ cluster pictures of $^{12}$C, crystalline vs. nonlocalized structure. We show that the crystalline cluster picture and the nonlocalized cluster picture can be reconciled by noticing that they are a manifestation of supersolidity with properties of both crystallinity and superfluidity. This is achieved through a superfluid $\alpha$ cluster model based on effective field theory, which treats the Nambu–Goldstone zero mode rigorously. For several decades, scientists have been searching for a supersolid in nature. Nuclear $\alpha$ cluster structure is considered to be the first confirmed example of a stable supersolid.

In this Thesis we present a description of α cluster nuclei, in particular focusing on the case of 9 Be, with αn and αα interactions derived from Cluster Effective Field Theory (EFT). The two-body potentials are regularized by a Gaussian cutoff which cures the short-distance dependence of the interaction and the potential parameters are found comparing the effective range expansion (ERE) with the calculated T-matrix. The calculation of the ground-state energies is carried out by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian on a Non symmetryzed Hyperspherical Harmonics basis in momentum space. Using only two body interactions a rather strong cutoff dependence appears. However, we are able to reproduce the experimental ground-state energies for selected cutoff values for most of the studied nuclei. The strong cutoff dependence indicates the lack of three-body forces, therefore we extend our Cluster EFT approach by including such many-body forces. Finally, the 9Be photoabsorption cross-section is studied via the Lorentz integral transform method (LIT), focusing on the low-energy resonances coming from the electric dipole transitions. By fine tuning the parameters of the three-body force, we are able to reproduce, up to 4 MeV, the considered experimental resonances. For the description of the spectrum at higher energies the inclusion of the αα D-wave potential seems to be necessary.
