In this article methodological subjects of activities efficiency research of the transport companies as well as other complex systems are analyzed. Methodically it is the most important to select estimation indexes of efficiency of searching object activities. After the system of indexes is formed, it is determined that it is more useful to use the system of technical economic indexes in order to estimate the level of efficiency of the activities of transport companies. It is so, because none of the separate indexes individually is able comprehensively to reflect the activities of transport systems or separate companies. Using the proposed method it is possible to research the great amount of objects according to numerous indexes. The main task is to form conditionally monolithic groups from the totality of objects. The level of activities of the objects in these groups should be similar. It would be possible to solve this task with the help of the image identification theory. The essence of this theory is to used necessary algorithm for the identification of searching objects signs. On this basis each object is reckoned in a certain monolithic objects group. Next step is the use of classification algorithms, which enable to classify the whole of searching objects. In this article you would fmd two main stages of classification problem solution. In the first stage the expansion of the objects into monolithic groups according to one of the indexes goes. The quality of this stage depends on the amount of the groups and on the selection of a concrete index. In the second stage the final objects expansion into monolithic groups according to the whole of selected technicaleconomic level indexes goes. Here is the manifold classification of the objects. Its results enable to determine the efficiency level of transport systems activities as well as to improve the quality of planning transport company's activities.

This paper intends to assess and test long-term memory in the Euronext stock indexes returns in the search for fractal dynamics that refute the random walk hypothesis. The Hurst exponents estimated through Rescaled-Range and Detrended Fluctuation Analysis evidence long memory in the form of persistence for all markets, with the exception of CAC 40 by the DFA. However, the Rescaled-Range Tests neither reject the absence of long dependency nor reject the existence of short dependency. On the contrary, the Fractional Differencing Test supports the presence of persistence in the PSI 20, ISE 20 and OBX indexes. This suggests that these markets are more prone to predictability, but also trends that may be unexpectedly disrupted by discontinuities, exhibiting dynamics incompatible with random walk behavior and providing evidence against the weak form of efficiency and validity of the asset pricing models.

AbstractThe article presents an algorithm for calculating selected energy assessment indexes for grain driers. Particular attention was paid to the conversion of the equations obtained for the operating conditions of the drying process into equations allowing the calculation of indexes for the standard drying conditions. The indexes obtained allow a proper comparison of dryers operating in varied atmospheric conditions, as well as humidity and temperature of the dried material.

The existing economic evaluation index system of oil-gas exploration project lacks environmental efficiency index and social efficiency index, and has no definite risk index. This paper analyzed the existing economic efficiency indexes, added the social efficiency and environmental efficiency indexes. These indexes can efficiently reflect the project’s difference, moreover, the data can be obtained easily. This paper designed the indexes, which can weight project geology risk, the project risk and the economic risk. These indexes composed a systematic and comprehensive system of oil-gas exploration project economic evaluation index. This index system can reflect the project characteristic from different angles, and provide the policy-making reference for the policy-maker.

China’s water shortage problem is becoming increasingly severe. Improving water use efficiency is crucial to alleviating China’s water crisis. This paper evaluates the water use efficiency of 31 provinces and municipalities in China by using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. When the usual DEA model has too many indexes selected, it will cause the majority of the decision making units (DMUs) efficiency values be one, which leads to invalid evaluation results. Therefore, by using the entropy weight method, a new synthetic set of indexes is constructed based on the original indexes. The new synthetic set of indexes retains the full information of the original indexes, and the goal of simplifying the number of indexes is achieved. Simultaneously, by empowering the original indexes, the evaluation using synthetic indexes can also avoid the impact of industrial structure and labor division on water use efficiency. The results show that in China’s northeastern grain producing areas, water use efficiency is higher due to the high level of agricultural modernization. The provinces in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River have the lowest water use efficiency due to water pollution and water waste. In general, China’s overall water use efficiency is low, and there is still much room for improvement.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether Islamic stock indexes outperform conventional stock indexes, in terms of informational efficiency and risk, during the recent financial instability period. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a state space model combined with a standard GARCH(1,1) specification while taking into account structural breakpoints. The authors allow for efficiency and volatility spillovers to be time-varying and consider break dates to locate periods of financial instability. Findings Empirical results show that Islamic stock indexes are more volatile than their conventional counterparts and are not totally immune to the global financial crisis. As regards of the informational efficiency, the results show that the Islamic stock indexes are more efficient than the conventional stock indexes. Practical implications Resulting evidence of this paper has several implications for international investors who wish to invest in Islamic and/or conventional stock markets. Policy makers and even academics and Sharias researchers should as well take preventive measures in order to ensure the stability of Islamic stock markets during turmoil periods. Overall, prudent risk management and precocious financial practices are relevant and crucial for both Islamic and conventional financial markets. Originality/value The originality of this study is performed by the use of time-varying models for volatility spillovers and informational efficiency. It considers structural break dates that think about the dynamic effect of informational flows on stock markets. The study was developed in a global framework using international data. The global analysis allows avoiding country specific effects.

ObjectiveTo calculate the efficiency index (EI), a recently described metric based on test accuracy and inaccuracy, for dementia diagnosis using the mini-Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (MACE), and to compare this with balanced EI (BEI) and unbiased EI (UEI), based on balanced and unbiased accuracy and inaccuracy measures respectively. All efficiency indexes have boundary values of 0 and ∞; inflection point at 1; where value >1 indicates correct diagnostic classification and <1 indicates incorrect classification.ResultsUsing the dataset from a large (N = 755) prospective pragmatic study of MACE, in which 114 patients received criterion diagnosis of dementia, EI was 2.81 at the optimal MACE cut-off (≤20/30, deter- mined by maximal Youden index). BEI was 4.24 and UEI was 0.61 at this cut-off. Plotting values of EI, BEI, and UEI across the range of MACE cut-offs (≤11/30 to ≤29/30), UEI values were lowest, EI values were highest at lower cut-offs and BEI values were highest at higher cut-offs. Adjusting for dementia prevalence (fixed BEI), both EI and UEI values increased with dementia prevalence, with EI>UEI.ConclusionsEfficiency indexes are easily calculatedThese unitary metrics may have greater utility than others in communicating risk of correct diagnosis versus misdiagnosis of test outcomes.

Currently, one of the priorities of the country's development is the transition of the economy to an innovative path of development. Analysis and evaluation of innovative development at the regional and national levels, quantitative assessment of regional innovation activity, and development of methods for evaluating the effectiveness of interaction between science and business that allow choosing the right strategies for solving management problems are of particular relevance. The subject of the research is the indexes of innovative development of regions. The purpose of the study is to compare the indexes of innovative development of regions and identify indexes that do not have significant differences. Eight indexes describing the innovative development of Russian regions are compared. We use four of the author's indexes, published earlier: the index of technical efficiency innovative space for international patent applications TEMPZ, the index of technical efficiency innovative space for patent applications TEPZ, the index of technical efficiency innovative space issued patents TEPV and the index of technical efficiency innovative space developed for new technologies TETECH. Along with the author's indexes, four other indexes with a similar applied focus are considered, published by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) in National Research University — Higher School of Economics (HSE), RIA rating, and Association of Innovative Regions of Russia (AIRR). In the course of the study, a comparative analysis of the indexes of innovative development in the space of expert-defined characteristics of regional differentiation was made. Analysis of the cosines of the angles between the indexes constructed using the beta coefficients of the regressions of these indexes on the differentiation characteristics allows us to refine the results of correlation analysis and identify a subset of indexes that are not distinguishable when solving control problems parameterized using the differentiation characteristics.

Furthermore, new indexes developed by the present authors and based on an alphabetical code, a symbol code, a semantic code, and a radical and stroke number code are presented and their use and efficiency are explained.

There are many indexes to measure the economic development quality, and carbon efficiency is one of the most important indexes. This paper constructing DEA model to calculate carbon efficiency indexes directly, through the carbon efficiency evaluation, can reflect the quality of economic growth objectively and then provide scientific basis for relevant government departments to make environmental economic decisions. Therefore, this study selects the four provincial-level municipalities of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing) as a case to evaluate carbon efficiency.

Purpose. The article is devoted to estimation of influence of process of development of market of freight cars operation upon operation efficiency indexes of Russia’s railway transport. The existing qualified viewpoints on this issue have been considered. Methodology. For quantitative evaluation, the authors have used comparative analysis methods and econometric modeling based on JSC “RZD” and Federal State Statistics Service data of the period from 2003 till 2016. Results. According to the results of econometric modeling, it has been found out that statistically important influence of development of freight cars operation market upon indexes of operation efficiency of Russia’s railway transport is present only in one part of variable - “amount of deliveries, performed within normative (stipulated) period”. At the same time, indexes of operation efficiency of Russia’s railway transport demonstrate negative dynamics only from 2003 till 2009-12; from then on, most of these indexes have been showing sustainable positive tendency, having recovered from initial negative shock. This kind of shock might be a reaction to change of level of market development of freight cars operation in Russia, but this does not apply to all indexes of operation efficiency of JSC “RZD”.

Combined cooling, heating and power ( CCHP ) system provides three different energy level products. This paper presents four thermodynamic evaluation indexes, such as primary energy rate, exergy efficiency, energy saving rate and energy cascade utilization efficiency. These thermodynamic evaluation indexes are adopted to evaluate four redesign system schemes based on an actual hospital in this paper. Analysis results show that exergy efficiency and energy cascade utilization efficiency, which take exergy value into account, are more reasonable than the others.the others.

This paper presents a method for selecting indexes based on cloud model. The natural language qualitative evaluation of water resources utilization efficiency (WRUE) indexes from several experts were converted into quantitative score values. The randomness and fuzziness of conversion process could be fully reflected. Based on the basic index set of WRUE and fifty experts` comments, cloud model was used to calculate each index`s value. Finally, eight indexes covering overall, agricultural, industrial and living industry were selected to construct the evaluation index system. Cloud model is convenient, objective, and the calculation process is simple. The construction of evaluation index system lays a good foundation for the evaluation of WURE.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate if nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) indexes can elucidate functional differences in nutrient uptake between the root system and tank of epiphytic bromeliads. The bromeliads Guzmania lingulata and Vriesea 'Harmony' received fertilizers in their tanks or through their roots using modified Hoagland & Arnon solution, with 0.00, 2.62, or 5.34 mmol L-1 nitrogen, as urea. After 90 days, nitrogen contents in leaves and plant biomass were evaluated, and NUE indexes were calculated. Guzmania lingulata and V. 'Harmony' fertilized in their tanks with 5.34 mmol L-1 had the highest averages of nitrogen uptake efficiency and recovery efficiency; those fertilized with 2.62 mmol L-1 through their roots showed the highest averages of NUE, nitrogen utilization efficiency, nitrogen physiological efficiency, and biomass conversion efficiency. The NUE indexes, besides being an effective tool to assess the nutritional status of ornamental bromeliads, reveal that the root system of epiphytic bromeliads is functional for nitrogen uptake and use.

The issues of changing the paradigm of strategic management of sustainable development and management technologies for environmental protection are considered on the basis of analysis of sustainable development strategies. The Eastern European countries such as Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine were used as the focus group. The country profiles were made based on the management technologies used to protect the environment. The analysis of existing models of the quantitative estimation of efficiency of sustainable development with the purpose of revealing the indexes capable to assess the efficiency of management technologies were carried out. Based on the indexes of the Economic Performance Index, the strengths and weaknesses of each country were identified (based on 24 EPI indexes in general and EPI sub-indexes in particular). Proceeding from the results of the content analysis and the components of the economic efficiency index, the practice of strategic environmental protection management as a strategic priority of sustainable development is based on increasing resource efficiency and environmental awareness, development of eco-technologies and instruments of environmental management.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to compare the efficiency of different murine lines for genotoxicity assays. Rats and mice of different murine lines were used. The spontaneous and induced indexes were evaluated according to alkaline comet assay of peripheral blood leukocytes, micronucleus and chromosomic aberration assay of bone marrow cell, and sperm head morphology assay. In most of the evaluated assays the line of Balb/c mice turned out to be the ideal biomodel, with less spontaneous indexes and high induced indexes to the mutagen used; allowing to detect in a narrow error margin those substances that are classified of very low genotoxicity. These results demonstrate that genetically the line of Balb/c mice in both sexes is more stable than the other ones evaluated. This suggests the use of the Balb/c line on in vivo genotoxicity assay will increase sensibility and robustness.

Recently, numerous promising results have shown that updatable learned indexes can perform better than traditional indexes with much lower memory space consumption. But it is unknown how these learned indexes compare against each other and against the traditional ones under realistic workloads with changing data distributions and concurrency levels. This makes practitioners still wary about how these new indexes would actually behave in practice. To fill this gap, this paper conducts the first comprehensive evaluation on updatable learned indexes. Our evaluation uses ten real datasets and various workloads to challenge learned indexes in three aspects: performance, memory space efficiency and robustness. Based on the results, we give a series of takeaways that can guide the future development and deployment of learned indexes.

Water is one of the most valuable resources for humans. Worldwide, leakage levels in water distribution systems oscillate between 10% and 55%. This causes the need for constant repairs, economic losses, and risk to the health of users due to possible pathogenic intrusion. There are different methods for estimating the level of leakage in a network, depending on parameters such as service pressure, orifice size, age and pipe material. Sixty-two water distribution networks were analyzed to determine the leakage method used, the calibration method, and the percentage of existing leaks. Different efficiency indicators were proposed and evaluated using this database. Several cases of installation of pumps working as turbines (PATs) in water distribution networks were analyzed in which the use of these recovery systems caused a pressure drop, reducing the level of leaks and recovering energy.

Water presents one of the earth resources as a component of environmental change, demanding the research of water use. A nusmber of authors analyzed water use from different perspectives, in different regions, not including the water efficiency index and water productivity in the whole of the EU. The presented contribution is orientated to the evaluation of water resources through the development of efficiency and productivity indexes in EU member states. The research is made by a single analysis of the index in time development, followed by countries’ comparison according to the available data and software support, accessing the sustainability features in water supply that are the three-fold-goals of economic feasibility, social responsibility, and environmental integrity, linked to the purpose of the water use. The results of the contribution show the countries with a positive indexes trend, and countries with a negative indexes trend. Such results can be used for improving measurements to increase water productivity, as well as to make measurements to decrease water use.

This dissertation adopts Data Envelopment Analysis method, in accordance with principles of comprehensiveness, concise, relevance and relativity as well as decision package requirements on quality and quantity, it selects four input indexes as woodland area, stuff, technical stuff proportion and fund; two output indexes as live stumpage and output value of state-owned forest farm, and takes use of DEAP2.1 software based on input-oriented BCC model to make an efficiency evaluation of 11 state-owned forest farms which participate in forest tenure reform and 19 which does not. The result shows no matter it's technical efficiency, scale efficiency or pure technical efficiency, forest farms which carries out reform are more efficient that those which does not.

The development of the energy economy in Northeastern China is unbalanced. In this paper, some energy structures such as oil, coal, and electricity are chosen as input indexes, while per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and total retail sales of consumer goods are desirable output indexes. The main causes of haze are industrial waste gas emission, industrial wastewater discharge, and solid waste production, which are regarded as undesirable output indexes. Environmental variables include industrial structure, urbanization, per capita GDP, and government planning. The proportion of the tertiary industry’s output value to its total output value is one of the important indexes to measure economic development in one area. Therefore, industrial structure plays a vital role in a region’s economic development. The tertiary industry oriented by service sector is the main force to promote economic transformation. The development of the urban economy will change from high to low as the process of urbanization, which can be characterized by green coverage of the urban built-up area. The higher per capita GDP, the higher the economic development can be achieved. Government planning refers to the total number of construction projects and completed projects in the year the government takes measures to control pollution. It shows that the total factor productivity of energy green efficiency has been stable in the last decades but fluctuated wildly in special periods, in which technical progress has played a great role, as well as the increase of technical efficiency.

The standard Yule-Walker equations, as they are known for an autoregression, are generalized to involve the moments of a moving-average process indexed on any number of dimensions. Once observations become available, new moments estimators are set to imitate the theoretical equations. These estimators are not only consistent but also asymptotically normal for any number of indexes. Their variance matrix resembles a standard result from maximum Gaussian likelihood estimation. A simulation study is added to conclude on their efficiency.

The purpose of the study is to compare the indexes of innovative development of regions and identify indexes that do not have significant differences. In this article, we used an approach that allows comparing an arbitrary set of indexes of innovative development of the Russian Federation regions in the space of differentiation characteristics used in solving project management problems. Eight indexes are compared: four author's indexes constructed using estimates of the technical efficiency of interaction between science and business in the region and four published indexes with a similar applied focus. Comparative analysis of indices is carried out in the space of expert-defined characteristics of regional differentiation. An approach has been tested to identify indexes that are not distinguishable when solving control problems parameterized using differentiation characteristics.

This research aims to investigate the extent and nature of productivity growth in manufacturing industries using nonparametric frontier techniques. In order to decompose the total factor productivity (TFP) into technical efficiency change and technological change we use the output-oriented Malmquist productivity index method for 34 Tunisian manufacturing industries over the period 2002–2016. The results indicated that TFP has witnessed an average growth of two percent over the period 2002–2016. The productivity growth identified was attributed to the improvements in the technology (or frontier-shift) rather than improvements or changes in the efficiency.

The work attempts to assess measures developing institutional efficiency in the economic and spatial area implemented by the local self-governments in Poland, as well as the evaluation of the effects thereof. Two indexes were used (the tasks implementation index — Wr and the effects index — We). The analyses conducted imply that the effects indexes assumed higher values than the implementation indexes. In the self-evaluation of self-government authorities, irrespective of the number of undertaken measures, the ones that are implemented bring the assumed effects. From among the measures undertaken by local self-governments in order to support starting up and conducting economic activity in their territory, the favorable disposition of officials and the improvement in general technical infrastructure of an urban municipality were indicated most frequently. In the area of space management, the tasks related with increasing municipalities’ aesthetics were distinguished (on average in Poland — 76,31%).

In order to increase the intensity of livestock development and obtain safe products such as meat and milk, it is of great importance to provide cows with qualitative feed and optimal maintenance. An important role is devoted to the animal health because it directly affects productivity. The use of poor quality feeds leads to animal health deteriorating, reduced productivity. Dis-balance of the gastrointestinal microbiota leads to poor food intake and clinical manifestations of disease. In order to increase feed efficiency and productivity indexes, were used extracts of essential oils contained in the feed additive "Activo". This supplement with its properties stimulates feed intake, digestion, has bactericidal and anti-stress properties with positive effect on animal health and productivity. The experiment revealed a positive effect of feed additive "Activo" on cows’ organism after calving and at the beginning of lactating. The influence of essential oils extracts contained in the feed additive "Activo" on the feed intake and digestion, milk production, protein and fat levels has been studied. There is a systematic dependence on feed intake increasing to milk yield. At the same time, indexes of quality such as fat and protein content were almost stable. According to the experimental results, it is possible to recommend milk producers to use "Activo" as part of cow feed with the aim to improve health and productivity.

Using fuzzy mater-element method, the comprehensive utilization efficiency of rain-flood resources in Rushan River is assessed. The uncertainty of the comprehensive utilization efficiency is processed by the fuzzy principle. Then the representative indexes are selected, and the standard values of indexes are indicated. After normalization, the close degree and weight coefficient are calculated. On basis of that, the rating membership of the comprehensive utilization efficiency is for grade II, equal “good”. So the paper concludes that the utilization of rain-flood resources in Rushan River Basin is feasible and effective. It provides follow-up support for the research of the utilization of rain-flood resources.

Nitrogen efficiency, along with associated indexes, is a widely used tool for assessing nutritional status in agricultural species. However, this parameter is not used in studies with ornamental plants, especially epiphytic cacti species. In particular, we know very little about the potential response of ornamental cacti to N absorption and use. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate N use efficiency (NUE), along with its associated parameters, in three species of ornamental cacti under nitrogen nutrition. To accomplish this, Rhipsalis baccifera, Rhipsalis paradoxa and Hatiora salicornioides were fertilized by Hogland and Arnon nutrition solution modified and enriched with urea in the concentrations of 0, 33.3 or 66.6 mM N during 180 days. At the end of the experiment, efficiency indexes were calculated. Efficiency parameters varied according to species. R. baccifera presented the greatest dissimilarity among the species, with highest uptake efficiency (NUpE), but lowest use efficiency (NUtE) and biomass conversion (BCE). R. paradoxa presented high values for NUE, NUtE, BCE and physiological efficiency (NPE) at concentrations of 33.3 mM N, suggesting greater investment in biological processes with lower supply of N. H. salicornioides had the highest averages in most parameters measured. Our results show that these indexes provided important comparative baseline information on nutritional status and investment strategy, thus serving as a suitable analytical tool to increase knowledge about this group of ornamental plants.

Considering nonlinear variation of working fluid’s specific heat with its temperature, finite-time thermodynamic theory is applied to analyze and optimize the characteristics of an irreversible Atkinson cycle. Through numerical calculations, performance relationships between cycle dimensionless power density versus compression ratio and dimensionless power density versus thermal efficiency are obtained, respectively. When the design parameters take certain specific values, the performance differences of reversible, endoreversible and irreversible Atkinson cycles are compared. The maximum specific volume ratio, maximum pressure ratio, and thermal efficiency under the conditions of the maximum power output and maximum power density are compared. Based on NSGA-II, the single-, bi-, tri-, and quadru-objective optimizations are performed when the compression ratio is used as the optimization variable, and the cycle dimensionless power output, thermal efficiency, dimensionless ecological function, and dimensionless power density are used as the optimization objectives. The deviation indexes are obtained based on LINMAP, TOPSIS, and Shannon entropy solutions under different combinations of optimization objectives. By comparing the deviation indexes of bi-, tri- and quadru-objective optimization and the deviation indexes of single-objective optimizations based on maximum power output, maximum thermal efficiency, maximum ecological function and maximum power density, it is found that the deviation indexes of multi-objective optimization are smaller, and the solution of multi-objective optimization is desirable. The comparison results show that when the LINMAP solution is optimized with the dimensionless power output, thermal efficiency, and dimensionless power density as the objective functions, the deviation index is 0.1247, and this optimization objective combination is the most ideal.

Fuzzy clustering has been broadly applied to classify data into K clusters by assigning membership probabilities of each data point close to K centroids. Such a function has been applied into characterizing the clusters associated with a statistical model such as structural equation modeling. The characteristics identified by the statistical model further define the clusters as heterogeneous groups selected from a population. Recently, such statistical model has been formulated as fuzzy clusterwise generalized structured component analysis (fuzzy clusterwise GSCA). The same as in fuzzy clustering, the clusters are enumerated to infer the population and its parameters within the fuzzy clusterwise GSCA. However, the identification of clusters in fuzzy clustering is a difficult task because of the data-dependence of classification indexes, which is known as a cluster validity problem. We examined the cluster validity problem within the fuzzy clusterwise GSCA framework and proposed a new criterion for selecting the most optimal number of clusters using both fit indexes of the GSCA and the fuzzy validity indexes in fuzzy clustering. The criterion, named the FIT-FHV method combining a fit index, FIT, from GSCA and a cluster validation measure, FHV, from fuzzy clustering, performed better than any other indices used in fuzzy clusterwise GSCA.

The super-efficiency data envelopment analysis model is innovative in evaluating the performance of crude oil prices’ volatility forecasting models. This multidimensional ranking, which takes account of multiple criteria, gives rise to a unified decision as to which model performs best. However, the rankings are unreliable because some efficiency scores are infeasible solutions in nature. What’s more, the desirability of indexes is worth discussing so as to avoid incorrect rankings. Hence, herein we introduce four models, which address the issue of undesirable characteristics of indexes and infeasibility of the super efficiency models. The empirical results reveal that the new rankings are more robust and quite different from the existing results.

Mean-variance efficiency was first explained by Markowitz (1952) who derived an efficient frontier comprised of portfolios with the highest expected returns for a given level of risk borne by the investor. The assumed mean-variance efficiency of the market portfolio along with the fact that it is capitalization-weighted underlies the rationale for market indexes being constructed by market capitalization weights (Mar, Bird, Casavecchia and Yeung, 2009). The pioneers of the fundamental index approach to investing, Arnott, Hsu and Moore (2005), however differ, and argue that market capitalization-weighted indexes are not mean-variance efficient due to their price-sensitivity, which leads to the overweighting of overvalued stocks and the underweighting of undervalued stocks, creating a return drag. The authors constructed an index weighted by fundamental determinants of firm value such as earnings, book value and revenue, proving that their fundamentally weighted index causes the return drag inherent in capitalization-weighted indexes to disappear. The aim of this paper is to discuss the evidence for and the arguments against fundamentally-weighted indexes as proxies for mean-variance efficient portfolios. We conclude that since the market cap-weighted index is only mean-variance efficient given the efficiency of the market, whilst the fundamental index incurs higher turnover, and may contain a value bias, its resistance to investor overreaction makes it a more valid mean-variance efficient proxy in an inefficient market.

Abstract The optimum content of ether polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer, determined by rotational rheometry, and its effects on the environmental impacts of concretes were studied for cement and limestone filler. To assess the consistency and water reduction, flow-table tests were performed. Then, cement content reduction and binder and carbon intensity indexes were determined through estimation based on theoretical concretes. The evaluated pure and blended cements present significant variability of the optimum consumption of the admixture. The fillers consumed less superplasticizer per area than the other materials and compositions with fillers allowed for greater reduction of water content. The mixtures with superplasticizer presented lower cement rate and binder and carbon intensity indexes. The usage of this type of admixture in optimal content can reduce environment impacts, according to the parameters analyzed.
