The ischemic tolerance is known to show protective effects on the neurons and the restricted Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ channels might be involved. In α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) receptor, ribonucleic acid (RNA) editing of the GluR2 subunit determines receptor desensitization and Ca2+ permeability. The authors investigated the effect of ischemic tolerance on the messenger RNA editing of Q/R and R/G sites of GluR2 subunit in hippocampus. It was found that the rate of RNA editing in Q/R site showed no change (100% edited), whereas that in R/G site decreased significantly (83.3% normal editing level to 60.4%) at day 3 (preconditioning period) and returned to normal level at day 14 (after preconditioning period). Further investigation revealed that the decrease of editing rate in ischemic tolerance resulted mainly from the decrease of editing in CA1 area.

The mammary gland is a complicated organ comprising several types of cells, and it undergoes extensive morphogenetic and metabolic changes during the female reproductive cycle. RNA editing is a posttranscriptional modification event occurring at the RNA nucleotide level, and it drives transcriptomic and proteomic diversities, with potential functional consequences. RNA editing in the mammary gland of yaks, however, remains poorly understood. Here, we used REDItools to identify RNA editing sites in mammary gland tissues in yaks during the lactation period (LP, n = 2) and dry period (DP, n = 3). Totally, 82,872 unique RNA editing sites were identified, most of which were detected in the noncoding regions with a low editing degree. In the coding regions (CDS), we detected 5235 editing sites, among which 1884 caused nonsynonymous amino acid changes. Of these RNA editing sites, 486 were found to generate novel possible miRNA target sites or interfere with the initial miRNA binding sites, indicating that RNA editing was related to gene regulation mediated by miRNA. A total of 14,159 RNA editing sites (involving 3238 common genes) showed a significant differential editing level in the LP when compared with that in the DP through Tukey’s Honest Significant Difference method (p < 0.05). According to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, genes that showed different RNA editing levels mainly participated in pathways highly related to mammary gland development, including MAPK, PI3K-Akt, FoxO, and GnRH signaling pathways. Collectively, this work demonstrated for the first time the dynamic RNA editome profiles in the mammary gland of yaks and shed more light on the mechanism that regulates lactation together with mammary gland development.

AbstractEvery nation, every society has its share of historical memories. They include, most obviously, the experiences of people who lived through past events, as they recall them. Then there is the record, written down in textbooks or literary works transmitted to generations who came after these events, but relived them vicariously, trusting in the accuracy of their national historians. Often historical records are magnified—or smudged out—by popular myths. In some cases, whether because of wars, revolutions, or other political upheavals, the records for a period of history are defective or totally missing from the national memory.

‘Kungliga samfundet för utgivande av handskrifter rörande Skandinaviens historia’ [Royal society for the publication of manuscripts on Scandinavian history], a society dedicated to the editing and printing of historical source documents, was founded in Stockholm in 1815. Earlier research has focused upon the editorial praxis of the society’s publication, Handlingar rörande Skandinaviens historia. Here I focus more upon the monumental and museological aspects of the society’s work. Viewed as types of national monument, source editions from the romantic era can tell us something about how history was produced and popularised during this period. The source documents printed in Handlingar served as educational tools intended to help the reader better understand history, specifically in this case the history of Sweden. But such editions also functioned – like a museum or a monument – as triggers for emotions, memory, and historicity, and like those other institutions, romantic-period source editions played a significant role in the construction and negotiation of national memory and heritage.

Herbert “Herb” Tabor, who celebrated his 100th birthday this past year, served the Journal of Biological Chemistry as a member of the Editorial Board beginning in 1961, as an Associate Editor, and as Editor-in-Chief for 40 years, from 1971 until 2010. Among the many discoveries in biological chemistry during this period was the identification of RNA modification by C6 deamination of adenosine (A) to produce inosine (I) in double-stranded (ds) RNA. This posttranscriptional RNA modification by adenosine deamination, known as A-to-I RNA editing, diversifies the transcriptome and modulates the innate immune interferon response. A-to-I editing is catalyzed by a family of enzymes, adenosine deaminases acting on dsRNA (ADARs). The roles of A-to-I editing are varied and include effects on mRNA translation, pre-mRNA splicing, and micro-RNA silencing. Suppression of dsRNA-triggered induction and action of interferon, the cornerstone of innate immunity, has emerged as a key function of ADAR1 editing of self (cellular) and nonself (viral) dsRNAs. A-to-I modification of RNA is essential for the normal regulation of cellular processes. Dysregulation of A-to-I editing by ADAR1 can have profound consequences, ranging from effects on cell growth and development to autoimmune disorders.

With the advent of the new genome editing tool of target-specifically customizable endonucleases, a huge variety of novel opportunities have become feasible. The crop improvement is one of the main applications of genome editing in plant science and plant biotechnology. The amount of publications referring to genome editing and CRISPR/Cas system based molecular tools application in crops is permanently growing. The aim of this study is the systematization and cataloging of these data. Earlier we published the first catalog of targeted crop genome modifications as of February 10, 2017. The current review is an update of the catalog; it covers research papers on crop genome modifications from February 10, 2017 to August 17, 2018, found by searching 47 crop names in the Scopus database. Over one year and a half, 377 articles mentioning CRISPR/Cas and crop names have been published, of which 131 articles describe an experimental application of this tool for editing 193 genes in 19 crops, including rice with the largest number of genes modified (109 genes). Editing 50 of 193 genes was aimed at crop improvement. The catalog presented here includes these 50 genes, specifying the cultivars, each gene and gene product function, modification type and delivery method used. The current full list of genes modified with CRISPR/Cas with the aim of crop improvement is 81 in 16 crops (for 5 years from August 2013 to August 2018). In this paper, we also summarize data on different modifications types in different crops and provide a brief review of some novel methods and approaches that have appeared in crop genome editing research over the reviewed period. Taken together, these data provide a clear view on current progress in crop genome modifications and traits improvement using CRISPR/Cas based genome editing technology.

CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)-Cas (CRISPR-associated) represents a powerful genome editing technology that revolutionized in a short period of time numerous natural sciences branches. Therefore, extraordinary progress was made in various fields, such as entomology or biotechnology. Bombyx mori is one of the most important insects, not only for the sericulture industry, but for numerous scientific areas. The silkworms play a key role as a model organism, but also as a bioreactor for the recombinant protein production. Nowadays, the CRISPR-Cas genome editing system is frequently used in order to perform gene analyses, to increase the resistance against certain pathogens or as an imaging tool in B. mori. Here, we provide an overview of various studies that made use of CRISPR-Cas for B. mori genome editing, with a focus on emphasizing the high applicability of this system in entomology and biological sciences.

Метою роботи є аналіз методів розробки та виробництва відео контенту. Методом дослідження є теоретичний аналіз трьох етапів виробництва відео контенту. Об'єктом дослідження є поетапне виробництво відео контенту. Предметом дослідження є поетапне виробництво відео контенту. Практична цінність полягає у подальшому використанні представленого алгоритму виробництва відео контенту для починаючих режисерів та продюсерів.
As a result of the completed thesis, the stages of video content production were analyzed, the peculiarities of the application of special means of production were reviewed and our own video film was developed. Field of application: film production. The urgency of the work lies in the study of modern production methods and the development of their own film within a limited budget. The aim of the work is to analyze the methods of development and production of video content. The research method is a theoretical analysis of the three stages of video content production. The object of study is the phased production of video content. The subject of the study is the phased production of video content. The practical value lies in the further use of the presented algorithm for the production of video content for novice directors and producers.

Abstract This thesis is a review of literature through out the Ming Chi period and attempt to explore every element of editing design of TaiWan Jih Jih Shin Pao (in terms of forms and contents). To organize and analysis the existing data of editorial design which was concern of the Japanese in order to understand the development of the early stage of the Taiwan newspaper industry . The Conclusions for this Research are as follows: 1.A well equipped company organization: Following staff problems in the early stage of growth, the government owned newspaper press was changed into a cooperative company. The founding capital was ten thousand dollars. The Taiwan Viceroy Office(臺灣總督府)used the “loyalty women group” to invest and control the newspaper press operation. It was well equipped when it was established. In addition, the newspaper company purchased a high speed rolling printer from Europe in Ming Chi year 33 which made the whole equipment even more reliable. The quality of the printing was better and more perfect. 2.Volumn of news print and widespread distribution: With an increasing volumn of news print distribution became widespread. This included American, British and Southeast Asia countries. The volumn of news print was more than 5,305,234 per time. The influence of this newspaper at the time was quite substantial. 3.The modernized of the newspaper form and content: There was a dramatic difference in the terms of format between the before and after the period of Ming Chi. The editing design of the TaiWan Jih Jih Shin Pao which was published after the Ming Chi period was similar to contemporary news in terms of the size of layout, the size of letter, column format and advertisment. The contents had classification for novel, column, report and so on. 4.Photography and print technology influenced the presentation of design news work: With the advance printing technology for newspaper the illustrations became more diverse and in the sense of visual transmission created a contemporary design style. 5.The influence of design editing brought back by the Mr. SO Wu Shan Bing Wei (守屋善兵衛) after he returned from an information gathering trip to Europe included: The “Art Deco”. This was very popular in Europe and made a full impact on the editing design of this newspaper. 6.Increase of Advertisement layout: This became the most effective way to promote merchandise. For example, Wu Fu Ophthalmic Medicine Co. (五福目藥) had an advert requiring the very best advertisement art work. This attracted people towards commercial design activities. The art design was no longer the business of the newspaper layout designer alone. 7.“TaiWan Jih Jih Shin Pao” emphasised holidays. They increased the pages of their advertisement layout in order to draw the adverts from the commerce and they also made the commercial layout look more interesting by adding an edge broader orplacing the adverts into one particular promotional theme. 8.Illustrations for the column fully presented the social life of Taiwan people: For example: a column was called “One day one profession”. It started from Ming Chi year 42 March 10 to year 42 April 9. It used a very simple sketch approach to describe the simple life of Taiwan people . In summary, we can find that the whole design style of “T’aiWan Jih Jih Shin Pao” is dramatically influenced by information brought back by the chairman of the press from Europe. Enrichment by the use of the edge broader in the layout established a reputation here. In relation to the development of newspapers in the world there was over two hundred and fifty years between the earliest newspaper published in Ming Chi year 4 (1871)which was called Pao Chi Shin Wen (報知新聞) and the earliest newspaper “Raiputriga tuaitunku” published in Germany in 1609 for daily distribution. The Western newspaper industry obviously had the earlier start. However, After the Ming Chi Period, Japan was very anxious to learn from Western society and this gave the Japanese the motivation to improve the Taiwan newspaper industry.

As a whole, no pervasive quality unites what we now deem Harlem Renaissance literature outside of the era in which it developed. The inconsistency and varied nature of the works therefore place an even greater emphasis on the editorial processes that produced this canon. While the popular period has received much scholarly attention, the significance of editors and editing in the Harlem Renaissance—aside from the formative efforts of W.E.B. Du Bois and Alain Locke—remains understudied. As a remedy, Editing the Harlem Renaissance foregrounds an in-depth approach to relevant editing and editorial issues, offering a variety of voices to become the first centralized authority on the subject. Rather than limiting the examination to a narrow understanding of editorial practices, this collection takes a broad and inclusive approach, exploring not only those figures of the Harlem Renaissance who edited in professional capacities but also those authors who employed editorial practices during the writing process, as well as those texts that have been discovered and/or edited by others in the decades following the Harlem Renaissance. To achieve this end, the collection comprises chapters in several areas, including professional editing, authorial editing, textual self-fashioning, textual editing, documentary editing, and bibliography.

This chapter argues that in the mid-1930s, American cinema perfected a classical form that dominated till the end of the decade. This form arose out of a new convergence between lifestyle and film style: in ideological terms, the period supported normative and traditional images of femininity and masculinity, and its film style privileged unified narratives based on action, dialogue, and continuity editing. The return to traditional values is manifested by a renewed interest in masculinity: in contrast to the earlier period, which is dominated by female stars, the most popular figured in the second half of the 1930s are male stars, along with child and teenage actors. This trend influences the most important genres of the period: screwball comedy, adventure, and biopic.

The literature of the Song dynasty was engaged with earlier literature, primarily that of the Tang, far more intensely than any earlier period had been engaged with the literary past. Scholarly editing and eventually widespread printing made past texts available on an unprecedented scale. They were relatively uninterested in pre-Tang literature, with the exception of the poetry of Tao Qian (Tao Yuanming, 365–427), but developed their own poetics through changing interpretations of the Tang literary legacy. The major change came in the early thirteenth century with Yan Yu’s Canglang shihua (Canglang’s Remarks on Poetry), which tied poetic composition to a literary historical curriculum of reading that did include pre-Tang poetry, with each period judged in relation to the whole. This set the model for the poetics of later dynasties.

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Shakespeare’s plays were often read and performed in ‘altered’ versions. This chapter explores the characteristics and rationale of the Davenant and Dryden adaptation of The Tempest and others up to 1756. The aim is to explore the uses to which The Tempest was put in the construction of ‘Shakespeare’s originality’ during a period of change in theatrical culture, scholarship, editing, and aesthetics, over the course of which the play was believed to have been written without sources. By investigating the drama’s debts to the writings of Virgil, Montaigne, and William Strachey, and also to ideas about empire, colonization, and ecology, this chapter underlines the extent to which this belief was mistaken while setting up an analysis of the play’s relationship with agricultural science and ecological anxiety—both factors that complicate the image of Shakespeare as a poet of Nature.

This book tells the remarkable personal and professional story of Lewis Milestone (1895-1980), one of the most prolific, creative and respected film directors of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Among his many films are the classics All Quiet on the Western Front, Of Mice and Men, A Walk in the Sun, Pork Chop Hill, the original Ocean’s Eleven and Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Marlon Brando. Born in Ukraine, he came to America as a teenager and learned about film in the U.S. Army in World War I. By the early 1920s he was editing silent films in Hollywood, and soon graduated to shooting his own features. His films were nominated for 28 different Academy Awards during a career that lasted 40 years. Among the many stars whom he directed were Barbara Stanwyck, Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper, Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford and Kirk Douglas. Providing biographical information, production history and critical analysis, this first major scholarly study of Milestone places his films in a political, cultural and cinematic context. Also discussed in depth, using newly available archival material, is Milestone’s experience during the Hollywood Blacklist period, when he was one of the first prominent Hollywood figures to fall under suspicion for his alleged Communist sympathies. Drawing on his personal papers at the AMPAS library, my book gives Milestone the honored place herichly deserves in the American film canon.

The mutually beneficial patron/artist relationship of the period is examined by Adam Nemmers in “The Pawn’s Gambit: Black Writers, White Patrons, and the Harlem Renaissance.” With a particular focus on Zora Neale Hurston, Nemmers analyzes literature of the Harlem Renaissance through both racial and postcolonial lenses, providing a necessary correction to narratives that portray African American authors as pawns in a white man’s game, when the obverse was just as often true. As Nemmers argues, the interaction between white godparents and black godchildren, as patron Charlotte Osgood Mason termed them, was a hidden yet powerful force in “editing” the written work of the Harlem Renaissance before it ever reached publishers, much less readers. In sum, as patronage was such an essential component of literary production during this period, analysis of its editorial impact on the works produced thereof enlightens our understanding of the movement and its writers.

The main task of plant breeding is creating of high-yield, resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses crop varieties with high product quality. The using of traditional breeding methods is limited by the duration of the new crop varieties creation with the required agronomic traits. This depends not only on the duration of growing season and reaching of mature stage of plants (especially the long-period growth plants, e.g. trees), as well as is associated with applying of multiple stages of crossing, selection and testing in breeding process. In addition, conventional methods of chemical and physical mutagenesis do not allow targeting effect to genome. However, the introduction of modern DNA-technology methods, such as genome editing, has opened in a new era in plant breeding. These methods allow to carry out precise and efficient targeted genome modifications, significantly reducing the time required to get plants with desirable features to create new crop varieties in perspective. This review provides the knowledge about application of genome editing methods to increase crop yields and product quality, as well as crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. In addition, future prospects for integrating these technologies into crop breeding strategies are also discussed.

Jennifer L. Sullivan (academic librarian) and Jessica Lott (anthropology professor) are invested in pedagogical approaches that help learners apply course content to their everyday lives. With this goal in mind, we created a flexible Wikipedia-based assignment for an upper-level anthropology course, Gender, Sex, and Sexuality: A Global Perspective, as a way to teach information literacy skills in a real-world setting while also enriching course content. As the course’s culminating assignment, learners researched an information gap on Wikipedia addressing gender. Learners were also asked to use their experience on Wikipedia to reflect on the significance of the documented gender bias in Wikipedia. This chapter discusses the advantages of Wikipedia as a platform for cultivating authentic information literacy practices. In particular, we address ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, information literacy as a social justice imperative, and disciplinary information literacy. We taught this assignment four times over the period summer 2017–summer 2020 and draw from our experiences collaborating on this assignment. We hope that learning from our successes and failures will inspire those who wish to adapt it for their instruction.

As a result, end users are faced with a variety of interfaces which they need to learn and use in a short period of time. The motivation to learn a new interface is subject to many variables most importantly is level of computer competencies, and openness to experience. The aim of this study was to explore end-users’ overall computer competencies, competencies using software with graphical interfaces and openness to experiencing new software interfaces. In a controlled experiment, participants were asked to perform five tasks using an image editing icon based interface software for the first time. We identify possible personality trait construct in modeling better interfaces.

LitPOS (Lithuanian Positioning System), the network of permanent reference GNSS stations, became operational in July 2007. It provides data both for real-time and post-processing applications. LitPOS stations cover the whole territory of Lithuania. Total number of LitPOS GNSS stations during 2007–2014 period was 25 (since 2015 – 30 stations). Also LitPOS network includes 3 ASG-EUPOS (Poland) and 6 LATPOS (Latvia) stations. LitPOS network data re-processing was done using Bernese (BSW5.2 update 2016 01 08) software. Software was slightly improved by editing scripts and writing procedures for RINEX files preparation, for downloading other necessary data, and for getting two processing solutions from single BPE (Bernese Process Engine) process (total network and sub-network without Polish and Latvian stations).

Abstract Focused Ion Beam (FIB) chip circuit editing is a well-established highly specialized laboratory technique for making direct changes to the functionality of integrated circuits. A precisely tuned and placed ion beam in conjunction with process gases selectively uncovers internal circuitry, create functional changes in devices or the copper wiring pattern, and reseals the chip surface. When executed within reasonable limits, the revised circuit logic functions essentially the same as if the changes were instead made to the photomasks used to fabricate the chip. The results of the intended revision, however, can be obtained weeks or months earlier than by a full fabrication run. Evaluating proposed changes through FIB modification rather than proceeding immediately to mask changes has become an integral part of the process for bringing advanced designs to market at many companies. The end product of the FIB process is the very essence of handcrafted prototyping. The efficacy of the FIB technique faces new challenges with every generation of fabrication process node advancement. Ever shrinking geometries and new material sets have always been a given as transistor size decreases and overall packing density increases. The biggest fundamental change in recent years was the introduction of the FinFET as a replacement for the venerable planar transistor. Point to point wiring change methodology has generally followed process scaling, but transistor deletions or modifications with the change to Fins require a somewhat different approach and much more careful control due to the drastic change in height and shape. We also had to take into consideration the importance of the 4th terminal, the body-tie, that is often lost in backside editing. Some designs and FET technology can function acceptably well when individual devices are no longer connected to the bulk substrate or well, while others can suffer from profound shifts in performance. All this presents a challenge given that the primary beam technology improvements of the fully configured chip edit FIB has only evolved incrementally during the same time period. The gallium column system appears to be reaching its maximum potential. Further, as gallium is a p-type metal dopant, there are limitations to its use in close proximity to certain active semiconductor devices. Amorphous material formation and other damage mechanisms that extend beyond what can be seen visually when endpointing must also be taken into account [1]. Device switching performance and even transmission line characteristics of nearby wiring levels can be impacted by material structural changes from implantation cascades. Last year our lab participated in a design validation exercise in which we were asked to modify the drive of a multi-finger FinFET device structure to reduce its switching speed impact on a circuit. The original sized device pulled the next node in the chain too fast, resulting in a timing upset. Deleting whole structures and bridging over/around them is commonly done, but modifications to the physical size of an FET device is a rare request and generally not attempted. It requires a level of precision in beam control and post-edit treatment that can be difficult to execute cleanly. Once again during a complex edit task we considered the use of an alternate ion beam species such as neon, or reducing the beam energy (low kV) on the gallium tool. Unfortunately, we don’t yet have easy access to a versatile viable replacement column technology grafted to a fully configured edit station. And while there should be significantly reduced implant damage and transistor functional change when a gallium column FIB is operated at lower accelerating potential [2], the further loss of visual acuity due to the reduced secondary emission, especially when combined with ultra-low beam currents, made fast and accurate navigation near impossible. We instead chose the somewhat unconventional approach of using an ultra-low voltage electron beam to do much of the navigation and surface marking prior to making the final edits with the gallium ion beam in a dual-beam FIB tool. Once we had resolved how to accurately navigate to the transistors in question and expose half of the structure without disturbing the body-tie, we were able to execute the required cut to trim away 50% of the structure and reduce the effective drive. Several of the FIB modified units functioned per the design parameters of a smaller sized device, giving confidence to proceed with the revised mask set. To our surprise, the gallium beam performed commendably well in this most difficult task. While we still believe that an inert beam of similar characteristics would be preferable, this work indicates that gallium columns are still viable at the 14 nm FinFET node for even the most rigorous of editing requirements. It also showed that careful application of e-beam imaging on the exposed underside of FinFET devices could be performed without degrading or destroying them.

Abstract 4D printing has great potential for fabricating patient-specific and stimuli responsive 3D structures for the medical sector. This paper conducts a systematic research about mechanical behavior based on 4D printing bilayer helical structure. The anisotropic characteristics of mechanical and shape memory performances induced by different infill strategies via both experimental and theoretical methods are investigated. In the proposed method, the bilayer structure is fabricated by three-dimension printing and heated in the water bath for a period of time, and then the deformed structure is obtained. The influence of printing temperature and angle on the storage modulus of shape memory materials (SMP) is explored by dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The influence of environmental temperature and angle on the stress-strain curve of polylactic acid test (PLA) is explored by stretching machine. Deformation recovery tests were performed on the helical structure by pre-editing, and 3D convertible structures with programmable Poisson’s ratios were fabricated to demonstrate. The effects of process parameters on the elastic modulus, storage modulus and shape memory behavior were verified.
