This study analyzes the economy of Aceh not only based on the linkage between industries but also based on the linkage between regions. The analysis used forward linkages and backward links to determine the leading sectors in Aceh. The data used is secondary data from Indonesia's 2016 Inter-Regional Input Output (IRIO) based on domestic transactions at producer prices. The data is sourced from Statistics Indonesia. The study results show that the key sectors in Aceh are Electricity and Gas and Manufacturing. These sectors have the highest spreading power (backward linkage) and sensitivity (forward linkage) because they are in the first quadrant. In addition, inter-regional linkage analysis shows that the final demand shock in Aceh has a large output impact on DKI Jakarta, North Sumatera, and Riau. On the other hand, the economy of Aceh was affected by the final demand shock from several provinces on the island of Sumatra, namely North Sumatera, Bengkulu, West Sumatera, Jambi, and Sumatra Selatan. The policy implications that can be applied to increase labor skills and management in leading sectors will have a multiplier effect on other sectors and the cooperation between provinces in a special economic zone.

Digitalization has an essential role during the pandemic because it helps facilitate various economic activities. This study aims to analyze the economic digitization of financial technology on economic growth in the Sumatra region (North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and South Sumatra) in January 2020-June 2021. We also used macroeconomic indicators in the form of inflation, foreign direct investment (FDI), and domestic investment (DI) as a control to explain economic conditions. The analysis results using the Panel Vector Autoregression (P-VAR) showed that fintech contributed positively to economic growth. This result was supported by maintained inflation stability that created a conducive investment climate, thereby attracting FDI. We recommend that the regional government take advantage of existing fintech and that "prudent" policies on inflation management must always be adequately prioritized to support the acceleration of economic growth in the Sumatra region, especially North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and South Sumatra.

The aim of this project was to analyze the meaning of the creative economy in the Minangkabau community in the tourist destination area of West Sumatra. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. This research was from the province of West Sumatra. Data collection by observation, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and in-depth interviews. The results showed that the creative economy had created economic added value, increased tourism, and strengthened local culture. Economic actors' actions in tourist destination areas prioritize rational economic actions and do not consider economic motives. The creative economy is not influenced by local habits or culture in taking action so that economic actors prioritize earning profits. The meaning of the Minangkabau community's creative economy in the tourist destination area is action prioritizing profit, action-oriented towards prospects, the action being accessible to all levels, action prioritizing opportunities, and actions have attractiveness and habits. It is shown that these creative economic actions tend to ignore the socio-cultural elements of local products. Cultural values drive the development of the creative industry in West Sumatra. The attractiveness and habits of local tourists and tourists from mancanagara (foreign tourists) become capital and action in the creative economy.

In the 2016-2021 RPJMD, West Sumatra’s government made tourism as one of its development priorities. The rapid development of tourism-related industries in West Sumatra is not in line with the declining economic growth every year. Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a slump in various industries, especially those related to tourism. Therefore, researchers will identify the role of the tourism-related industry on the economy in West Sumatra and the impact of the decline in tourism-related industry performance due to the COVID-19 pandemic on the West Sumatra economy. This study uses input-output table analysis including linkage analysis, multiplier analysis, and impact simulation analysis. Based on the research results, the land transportation industry, air transportation, company services, and other services are the leading industries in tourism-related industries. Then, the tourism-related industry in West Sumatra is pro-growth and pro-poor which means the tourism-related industry has the ability to increase economic growth and the welfare of the people in West Sumatra. Through impact simulations, the decline in tourism-related industry performance due to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a decrease in total output, a decrease in household income, and a decrease in job opportunities in West Sumatra.

So as to realize joint action by collaborating between creative economy actors including the import of raw materials and marketing of fellow creative economy actors in the West Sumatra Tourism Destination Area. The conclusion of this study is that social capital becomes a bridge or link in the development of the creative economy. The novelty of this research is social capital to strengthen creative economic development

Abstract A strategic step on food security was directed by president to the Ministry of Defence. Coastal communities are key actors in the realization of the blue economy and are the determinants of the successful implementation of Indonesia’s policy to becoming the Global Maritime Fulcrum. There are ten provinces on Sumatera which have marine coastal areas with abundant fishery potential. However, that potential has not been fully utilized. This article aims to review opportunities and strategies in realizing the blue economy by empowering coastal communities in the Sumatra. The method was a qualitative exploratory method with SWOT and combined with SSM analysis. The data sources were obtained through secondary data from literature studies, comparisons through multi institutions data. The study found that community empowerment can be done by considering the potential of fishery resources and the community’s interest in managing the fisheries sub-sector. The development of national food barns should be focused on the Blue Economy sector and can be started through the Sumatra region. Stakeholder synergy can be integrated in fostering, supervising and mobilizing coastal communities in supporting their welfare.

Reduced forest or deforestation is widespread in East Aceh Regency for plantation, agriculture and settlement purposes. Forests in Sumatra, including in East Aceh Regency are Sumatran Elephant habitat (Elephas maximus sumatranus). However, encroachment resulted in this fauna threatened sustainability, whereas Sumatran elephants are endangered species protected by law both since Dutch colonialism, post-independence, and international regulations, and Sumatran elephants have an vital ecosystem role but are seen as a nuisance to the local economy in East Aceh Regency, so it is not electrocuted, killed and abused. This paper reviews the deforestation of the Sumatran Elephant in East Aceh Regency. The results of the study show that elephant roaming areas intersect with deforestation that occurred in East Aceh Regency. As an alternative local economy, there is still the potential of ecotourism with the mascot of the Sumatran elephant. Thus the Sumatran elephant is still able to be sustainable, and the forest as habitat is maintained.

This article seeks to address how networks of trade can help explain the changing of complex environment of the commercial centres which mainly relied on ports. East Coast Sumatera, as a coastal area had hosted the power dynamics and contestations between capitalists during the colonial times. In addition to that, East Coast Sumatera was also regarded as a vital sea lane for commercial vessels and, hence, emerged into urban trading centres. This article employs historiography as the research method. Data presented in this article comprises of primary data, such as coin collections that were accessed from The Sumatran Numismatic Museum, as well as secondary data including published books and scholarly articles. This research shows that currencies found in East Coast Sumatra has demonstrated that currency was situated as the highest authority, meaning that it was not only understood as a tool of exchange in economy and monetary sense but also a tool for political legitimacy (money power) for territorial expansion, in competition for wealth. Aside from that, the produced space of maritime culture represented an environment and networks of trade that produced power.

Abstract Studies of a region’s growth can only be conducted thoroughly considering its position in a larger urban system. In this system a region interacts with another region resulting in a complex urban network. Inter-urban interactions manifest in various forms such as population migration, trade, or information exchange. This study shows that urban centrality based on its interactions differs from urban centrality based on size. These interactions can be seen from the intensity of urban functions based on labor as well as interactions that can be seen from the intent on movement. This research is aimed at explaining the centrality patterns of urban interaction in Indonesia as the first identification on the relationship of cities on the island of Sumatra based on gravity model on economy and passenger movement based. This study aims to provide empirical evidence about the analysis of digital economic development in West Sumatra in supporting national economic growth. The variables tested in determining supporting the development of the digital economy are variables that have an influence on national economic growth. The statistical method used to test the hypothesis of this study is the classical assumption and multiple regression test. The results of this study indicate that an increase in the number of E-entrepreneurship in Indonesia, especially in West Sumatra, is able to give a significant overall effect on national economic growth which is 0.002%. The hypothesis results indicate that the value of digital transactions has a significant effect on national economic growth, but the development of business and development the digital market is not yet significant because it is bigger than alpha 5%. This indicates that in the implementation there are still many challenges faced, especially related to the absorption of skilled workers and can support the e-entrepreneurship. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the strength of e-entrepreneurship in the digital economy in order to encourage national economic growth.

West Sumatra owns a very prospective waqf asset. Yet, in general it has been managed traditionally. Only some counties have already implemented productive waqf management. This study examines the productive waqf management roles in empowering the ummah economy in West Sumatra including the supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing the productive waqf management in this province. This work is a qualitative descriptive study which verbalizes and analyzes the data holistically. The data of this research are collected from interviews and written documents. The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of productive waqf in empowering the ummah’s economy in West Sumatra as well as to elaborate the supporting and inhibiting factors in developing the waqf productive in West Sumatra. Business facilities provided by the waqf management institutions give communities more chances to get employed or to expand their businesses and gain more profits so increase their living standards as well. As a whole the waqf management in West Sumatra has gone well and got supported from most community members. The only obstacle is limited cash waqf so make it rather difficult to expand the waqf assets. Therefore in order to make the ummah economic empowerment on the basis of productive waqf becomes more effective, it is suggested that the waqf management institutions introduce a money waqf movement.

The economy of West Sumatra experienced an economic contraction in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the education sector experienced better growth compared to national growth. Seeing this, the potential of this sector in West Sumatra needs to be analyzed so that it can be seen whether this sector can be chosen as a priority sector in spurring West Sumatra's economic growth to enter the new normal period. The analysis in this study uses secondary data with the classic Shift Share method. The data in this study are Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product according to Constant Prices and the Gross Regional Domestic Product of West Sumatra according to Constant Prices with the 2019 and 2020 data periods. From the analysis results, it is known that the education sector is growing progressively. This sector in West Sumatra is growing faster than the national one and its competitiveness is better than other sectors in West Sumatra. Another thing according to this research is that the education sector can affect several other sectors during the pandemic. So that this sector is very worthy of being the leading sector in dealing with the new normal situation.

Traditional farming communities are synonymous with subsistence culture, whereas modern society is a commercial economy. Economic action in sociology is called social action, which has different motives and orientations depending on the actor concerned. This research aims to analyze the socio-economic actions of farming communities in Kalampadu Village, Muara Kuang Sub-district, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province. This research uses a qualitative method. Informants in this research are rainfed rice farmers and stakeholders in Kalampadu Village and collect data using observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results showed that farmer actors in the village of Kalampadu carried out a dualism of economic action, both subsistence economics and commercial economics. Weber’s social action is not practiced partially. Some of these concepts of social action can be used simultaneously or separately. There are three models of social action in the socio-economic behavior of farmers, namely traditional social action (subsistence economy), traditional social action of rational instrumental integration (secondary subsistence economy), and rational social action (commercial economy).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of service quality and innovation on competitive advantage and sustainable local economy, with marketing mix strategy as the mediating variable (Study in small and medium enterprise (MSME) in Java and Sumatera). Design/methodology/approach The study population of this paper is the MSME in Sumatera and Java Islands in Indonesia, as the highest population in Indonesia in 2010–2016 (portion of MSME in Indonesia: Java 58.29 percent and Sumatera 22.22 percent, or total 80.51 percent), and total 16 province in Indonesia: Aceh, Sumatera Utara, Riau, Sumatera Barat, Jambi, Sumatera Selatan, Bengkulu, Lampung, Kep Riau, Kep Bangka Belitung (Sumatera Island), and Banten, DKI Jakarta, Jawa Barat, Jawa Tengah, Jawa Timur, DI Yogyakarta (Java Island). The analysis used in this study is a quantitative approach, namely, structural equation modeling based on variance, also known as the WarpPLS method. Findings The findings of this study are as follows: first, service quality has an influence on marketing mix strategies, meaning the application of service quality according to customer needs will create satisfaction. In other words, the better the quality of service provided, the higher the customer satisfaction will be. Second, the quality of service has a direct influence on creating a sustainable local economy, meaning that improving service quality to understand customer needs can enhance sustainable economic growth and competitive advantage through marketing mix strategies. This means that improving service quality in accordance with customer needs will improve the marketing mix strategy leading to a sustainable local economy. Third, the marketing mix strategy has a positive influence on the sustainable local economy, meaning that the higher the marketing mix strategy, the better the strategy for sustainable economic growth and competitive advantage will be. Originality/value The effect of marketing mix strategy as mediation (using the Sobel test) on the influence of service quality and product innovation on sustainable local economy and competitive advantage is shown in this study. No previous research studies this relationship at the research location: MSME in Indonesia, especially in Java and Sumatra Islands. Hence, this is one of few studies comprehensively evaluating the effect of service quality and innovation, toward competitive advantages and local sustainable economic: marketing mix strategy as mediating variable (study in MSME in Java and Sumatera).

The Minangkabau ethnic group is still the largest matrilineal society in the world. Past research on this ethnicity are mainly centralized on the concept of merantau (migration), on its adaptation after the enter of Islam, and on the gender role and position in Minangkabau society. This research aims to highlight the contribution of the Minangkabau matrilineal system to the local development of West Sumatra, specifically the gender equality goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and to what extent if it were present. This research employed qualitative method, and data were collected through literature study and interview with national and local NGOs working in the field of women and development. This research discovered that theoretically, the Minangkabau matrilineal values can and should stimulate the gender equality SDGs achievement in West Sumatra. However, in reality, gender inequality still exists in West Sumatra with several SGD targets having wider gaps compared to other patrilineal societies in Indonesia. This research argues that by not wholly implementing the matrilineal values, the West Sumatran Minangkabau people has indirectly restrained themselves from achieving gender equality in the region, specifically related to violence and discrimination against women, also active participation of women in the economy and politics.

Abstract Forecasting the volume of freight has a significant importance for future decisions for the entire economy, as well as its individual participants. The transportation of goods between Sumatra and Java using the highway mode that accumulate with local transportation will greatly burden roads in Lampung province. This research was conducted to predict the pattern and amount of movement of goods in the future. The modelling is conducted for the plan period up to 20 years based on growth predictions of geographical, social, economic and traffic flow. This study conducted a process of Sequential Demand Model (Planning Model 4 stages) by using software Transplan Version 8. Transportation patterns in 2040 is predicted will be dominated by continuous trips with domination of movement from Java to South Sumatra, or otherwise. Both the transportation between internal zones and external zone to internal zone have a significant increase. The most strategic main line freight in Lampung for today and in the future is along the Bakauheni-South Sumatra and Bengkulu-South Sumatra both through toll roads, national roads, and railways.

Tour De Singkarak is the name of an international bicycle race competition held by the government of West Sumatra Province since 2009 ago. The event was held as one of the West Sumatra government efforts to promote tourism and attract tourist visits. The central government through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy supports the implementation of this grand event. Every year the number of participants and countries participating in this event increases. One of them is influenced by the increasing nominal prize that can be accepted by the participants. The implementation of TDS events cost not a little, in 2013 the TDS budget reached 4.5 billion Rupiahs. The TDS event was held in West Sumatra to show the world about the tourism potential of West Sumatra. West Sumatra has diverse natural tourism potentials, some of which are part of TDS, among others: Lake Singkarak, Equatorial Bonjol Monument, Harau Valley, Rajo Baso Palace (Pagaruyung), Maninjau Lake (kelok 44), Jam Gadang, Padang Pariaman Beach, Lake Kandis, Lake Kembar, and Beaches on Pesisir Selatan. Most of the TDS stages pass through tourist attractions with extraordinary beauty. Until the last event in 2013, the TDS event had not been considered to provide a continuous contribution to the 3 main aspects, economic, social and environmental in West Sumatra. It is undeniable that this event increases the attractiveness of tourism in West Sumatra in the eyes of the International, but this acquisition is not sustainable and cannot meet the requirements of sustainability. Attractive packaging must be supported by the best quality, TDS events with the international level are expected to be able to provide long-term impact on economic, social and environmental factors.

The purpose of this study is to examine the economic interaction in Indonesia and the impact of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and electricity on inter-island interactions in Indonesia. Data used Indonesian Inter-Regional Input-Output (IRIO) table 2016. The result is the largest inter-island interaction occurred between Java and Sumatra, Java-Sulawesi and Java-Kalimantan. Java was more dependent on Sumatra than Sumatra's dependence on Java. Java was more dependent on other islands than other islands' dependence on Java. The impact of ICT on the economy was higher than the impact of electricity. The ICT had more impact on the interregional economy than intraregional. Meanwhile, the electricity had more effect on the intraregional economy than interregional. The intervention to increase investment in ICT resulted in the highest increase in output of Bali and Nusa Tenggara. Both when the intervention was carried out on Bali and Nusa Tenggara islands or in other islands. The same was true for electricity investment interventions. Therefore, Bali and Nusa Tenggara islands should be given more priority in ICT and electricity investment. Investment in ICT and electricity will accelerate the economic development of eastern Indonesia so that it can become a reference for equitable development.
