The imperialist and anthropocene logic has given rise to practices whose traces are to be found in an environmental type of hegemonism and a difficult apprehension of the connection to the living, to this different, human or non-hum another, who nevertheless participates in the relation. A postcolonial ecocritical analysis shows that these exploitations which are perpetuated in the contemporary world have a link with the ecological crisis. A comparatist approach to the works of Bessora, Patrick Chamoiseau, Nadine Gordimer and Kate Grenville highlights this state of crisis: it guides the reader to wards new realities and announces the evolving contours of a changing natural environment. These works also teach humans to look at the surrounding nature in a different way and convey cultural values that are likely to enrich the relationship with the living. In this sense, literature shows that reconciliation cannot be achieved without man’s awakening to an environmental conscience, that is to say the modelling of the interaction between humans and the environment to preserve nature. Reconciliation means that the working together of the literary imagination and the inclusion of socio-cultural realities will lead to a sensitive poetics of inhabiting the world. Since the cultural trajectory of a group is linked to the earth, ecological awareness must first be developed by local cultures to then influence global cultures. In other words, it is necessary to decolonize ecological know ledge in order to restore the natural environment and the relationships between the different forms of life. The goal is therefore to identify the elements that enable a reconciliation between anthropocentric requirements and environmental ethics

This thesis addresses the presence of female characters in the contemporary Italian Novel from the viewpoint of care relationships, in relation to ecology and democracy. From an ecofeminist and postcolonial perspective, we attempt to study the relationship of the female protagonists of the contemporary Italian Novel to the 'places' they inhabit. Through the literary analysis of three essential novels, our work consists of showing the role of literature in the reinstatement of aesthetics in ethics by presenting women in literature as a symbol of resistance to the ecological crisis, to uprooting and unrestrained neoliberalism. In the vast panorama of contemporary Italian literature, we have chosen to get closer to these women who, like polluted or confiscated lands and colonized populations, are voiceless because they are subordinate to neoliberal culture. Studied from an ecofeminist, postcolonial point of view and according to the ethics of care, the image of the protagonist woman of the contemporary Italian novel can offer a new reading of the challenges facing current feminism. Marilina Labruna by Carmen Covito in La bruttina stagionata, Estrellita in L'Iguana by Anna Maria Ortese or immigrant women in contemporary Italy in the novels Amiche per la pelle by Laila Wadia, Adua d'Igiaba Scego and Pecore nere are all different expressions of democracy in the sense that they represent figures of resistance to uprooting and cultural assimilation

Fragmentation and alienation: recurring themes in the postcolonial literature, are represented by the content and the form of the studied literary works in this research. Within a historical and fictional setting, the novels of Chinua Achebe and V.S. Naipaul set the fragmented and alienated postcolonial figures in different places and surroundings. The quest for identity of these postcolonial figures, between tradition and modernization, has caused their uprooting. In fact, in the novels of these two writers, the postcolonial figures, who are torn between the Occident and the Orient, are geographically and culturally alienated. Hence, they are unstable and are in a never-ending quest. The setting in the postcolonial novel is itself fragmented so that it alienates more the postcolonial figures who try to make an end to this alienation. The double culture – oriental and occidental – does not only participate in losing the cultural identity, but also in losing the figures’ ones. While meeting the Other or the Occidental, the characters of Achebe and Naipaul try to hide their « black skin » under a « white mask » through the mimicry of this Other. This literature stands out by its hybridization, its intertextuality, as well as its linguistic aspect, which has turned into a dialogic literature, in a discourse with the occidental literature and notably the colonial one. Such an indigenous literature, revealed in a foreign language, shows an attachment and a detachment. The non-linearity plays an important role in this fiction, given that the tales are distorted and fragmented like the major characters of these stories. In this way, one can say that through varied thematic and stylistic features these two postcolonial writers have succeeded in presenting to readers the alienation and fragmentation of postcolonial figures within their surroundings and in their era

Motivated by the challenge of the human being’s construction based on the individual reading experience we focused our analysis onregional literature material recommended by the Guyanese State Department of Education. In connection with the general objective of the course of Literature which seeks the education of the citizen we questioned the opportunity to offer high school students, at least in this context, a larger exposure to regional literature that corresponds to their familiar environment and living experience. In French Guiana, the archetype of the modern, stable and homogeneous individual as an academic requirement legitimating the transmission of national culture generates most of the time offset situations that the learner subject has to manage. Nowadays, in a society reconfigured by massive migrations of the late twentieth century, the combination of traditional referents from a primary culture superimposed to the global media speech increases the consequences of those differences. In our opinion, students from French Guiana involved in regional literature that deals with a realistic approach of the society and with a reflection about civism are certainly more able to mobilize the relevant resources that they will reinvest in their personal learning process. The theoretical framework of our purpose is related, in terms of civic training, to the issue of transmission of literature as well as to the historical and educational context associated with it that also include the concept of Guyanese literature and the relation with the theories of literary reception and the scientific questions they imply. On the basis of a free reading offered to students and focused on a Guyanese writer’s corpus we intended, in terms of discourse analysis, to assess the relevance of this proposal. Our methodology is based on a qualitative analysis of collected data. This epistemological approach is essentially explorary, descriptive or progressive depending on the situations encountered

Spanning the fields of the sociology of literature and intellectuals, this dissertation studies the Algerian literary field as a bilingual, transnational one, during a period of crisis. It brakes with what I call "methodological monohngualism", as well as moving away from a "methodological nationalism" and a language of "crisis exception". I aim to understand the role of the linguistic issue (French/Arabic, Tamazight also) in writers' political stance during the civil war. We show that the transnational issue is far more decisive than the linguistic one in explaining the stance of writers, even though the civil war became what is sometimes called a "war of languages" within the literary field. Moreover, as many writers had to go into exile, especially in France, we show how this period questions the "national literatures" thesis adopted by some, and its image in the former metropole, between literary universality and a niche market. Finally the thesis sheds light on the relationship between literature and politics, since the literary value of political commitment differs from Algeria to France, and since other categories of intellectual increasingly compete with the figure of the "engaged writer". The empirical research is based on two statistical surveys, a bibliographical one of 1600 literary works published by Algerian writers and a prosopographical one of 174 writers in activity during the 1990s, enabling us to build a Multiple Component Analysis ; the research is also based on approximately 80 semi-structured interviews, archives, the exhaustive study of newspapers and the analysis of literary texts
Harchi, Kaoutar. "La formation de la croyance en la valeur littéraire en situation coloniale et postcoloniale : étude des trajectoires de consécration des écrivains algériens francophones Assia Djebar et Kateb Yacine, en France, entre 1950 et 2009." Thesis, Paris 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA030077.
Повний текст джерелаThe present doctoral thesis is intersestd in the formation of the belief in literary value in colonial and postcolonial situation, between 1950 and 2009, in France. For that, we made the choice to pay our attention to the paths of recognition of two Algerian authors of French language who have been the object of an objectivable literary achievment, namely Assia Djebar (1936-) and Kateb Yacine (1929-1989). Since the Algerian literary of French language core statement can’t pertinently be approached via the prism of the fields theory by Pierre Bourdieu, we made the choice to resort, through our study, to the concept of literary insitution defined by the likes of Jacques Dubois. According to what we then could have observed through a corpus made up of talks, press articles, official discourses, private correspondences, the literary phenomenon of recognition of the two Algerian authors would be modeled in the form of five stages: the discovery, the publication, the critical reception, the entry in the academic field and the entry in the universe of secondary education. The interest of this modeling is mainly based on its capacity to reveal, beyond the literary doxa, the social methods that have contributed to the formation of a belief in the quality of the given textual productions. And, at each stage of the paths of recognition of Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine, we can observe strong relations between, on the one hand, the literary and, on the other hand, the extra-literary. In this direction, the commonly widespread idea according to which the recognition of an author would only be based on talent is strongly questionned. The French-speaking literature or, more precisely, the literary francophonie – denomination under which Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine are regularly categorized – thus appears to be a regulated system depending on interests far from being allegedly “pure”, but driven by ideological and political logics. Engaged in relations of symbolic domination, Assia Djebar and Kateb Yacine have both, during their respective paths, set up of specific strategies in order to limit the instrumental value of their textual productions and impose their own definition of what Algerian literature of French language truly should be

This thesis offers an ecocritical reading of four American ecofiction novels: Karen Tei Yamashita’s Through the Arc of the Rain Forest (1990), Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones (2011), Barbara Kingsolver’s Flight Behavior (2012), and Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being (2013). These novels combine representations of ecological crises with the explorations of personal and collective traumas or repression experienced by fictional non-human and human subjects. The study addresses the following dimensions of the texts: 1) The ways in which the authors combine narratives of ecological degradation or catastrophe on one hand, and of socioeconomic oppression inflicted on marginalized subjects by the patriarchal, (neo-)colonial, capitalist systems on the other; 2) The textual interplay between the representations of such oppressed sexualized, racialized, and non-human subjects, which allows the authors to demonstrate the fluidity and bias inherent in the identity categories they explore; 3) The representations of material waste and of “wasted” human and non-human subjects, rendered pathological and discarded as “by-products” of these oppressive systems. The approach pursued in this study is strongly interdisciplinary and combines close reading, paying attention to linguistic and stylistic features, and larger historical, ecological, and socioeconomic contextualizing, as it draws upon notions developed by critical animal studies, waste studies, and trauma studies. This study ultimately addresses what role climate fiction can play in understanding, and perhaps mitigating, the current planetary ecological crises, as it faces the conjoined difficulties of representing global phenomena and non-human subjectivities while maintaining focus on individual human-oriented stories. Examining the representations of space and the environment, non-human animacy and embodiment, and individual and intergenerational trauma, this study interrogates the activist potential of climate novels, addressing the possibilities and the limitations of ecofiction in the Anthropocene
