Theoretical approaches to learning in practice-based jazz improvisation contexts include situated learning and ecological perspectives. This article focuses on how interest-driven, self-sustaining jazz learning activities can be matched against the concepts of stolen knowledge (Brown & Duguid, 1996) and landscape of learning (Bjerstedt, 2014). Based on an extensive interview study with Swedish professional jazz musicians, it argues that the multidirectedness involved in jazz improvisational practice calls for a rich learning ecology framework including several didactic loci.

After the Spanish flu pandemic, it was apparent that airborne transmission was crucial to spreading virus contagion, and research responded by producing several fundamental works like the experiments of Duguid [J. P. Duguid, J. Hyg. 44, 6 (1946)] and the model of Wells [W. F. Wells, Am. J. Hyg. 20, 611–618 (1934)]. These seminal works have been pillars of past and current guidelines published by health organizations. However, in about one century, understanding of turbulent aerosol transport by jets and plumes has enormously progressed, and it is now time to use this body of developed knowledge. In this work, we use detailed experiments and accurate computationally intensive numerical simulations of droplet-laden turbulent puffs emitted during sneezes in a wide range of environmental conditions. We consider the same emission—number of drops, drop size distribution, and initial velocity—and we change environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity, and we observe strong variation in droplets’ evaporation or condensation in accordance with their local temperature and humidity microenvironment. We assume that 3% of the initial droplet volume is made of nonvolatile matter. Our systematic analysis confirms that droplets’ lifetime is always about one order of magnitude larger compared to previous predictions, in some cases up to 200 times. Finally, we have been able to produce original virus exposure maps, which can be a useful instrument for health scientists and practitioners to calibrate new guidelines to prevent short-range airborne disease transmission.

En adoptant une épistémologie de la pratique et à l’aide d’une recherche-action, nous montrerons que le déroulement du projet produit les connaissances nouvelles dont il a besoin (knowing) grâce à des microprocessus d’interactions. Ils mettent en jeu des connaissances tacites au sens de Polanyi repris par Duguid et Tsoukas. Le projet est alors traversé par un ensemble de tensions et de controverses au sens d’Engeström. Il en découle des implications managériales en matière de pilotage de projet.

In Pacific Rim countries parents of children with developmental disabilities have organized peer support organizations. One form of peer support is Parent to Parent based on one to one connections between two parents. The movements to create and sustain peer support in the U.S., New Zealand, China, and Korea are described. Qualitative evidence from interviews in the US indicates several reasons why Parent to Parent is effective for some of the people who obtain social provisions from the organizations. Peer support helps parents resist social stigma, gain hope, and obtain persuasive guidance. They are able to exchange situated knowledge from their lived experiences with children with disabilities (Brown, Collins & Duguid, 1989). This kind of information may not be available through other sources.

In this paper, I adopt a diachronic approach to the analysis of the two large SiBol newspaper corpora, in order to examine and compare the expression of evidentiality ( Bednarek, 2006 ; Dendale and Tasmowski, 2001 ; and Chafe, 1986 ) – that is, how the writer's knowledge is marked as having been ‘seen’ or ‘heard’, etc., how the knowledge is attributed, and how it is passed on to the reader. Findings show an increased use of evidential markers over the thirteen-year period studied, and, at the same time, a shift in reporter usage of evidentiality towards hearsay evidence and the reporting of knowledge acquired by speculation. This is in keeping with other observations regarding an increased ‘vagueness’ in contemporary journalism (see Duguid, 2010 ), which is counterbalanced at times with an elevation of the newsworker's presence.

Flax seed yield is a complex trait that results from the inter-relationship between many crop characteristics. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a statistical method used to determine the relationship between measured variables such as crop characteristics. Crop phenology, canopy traits, yield, and its components were included in structural equation models to determine how these crop characteristics relate to seed yield in a phenotypically diverse collection of flax germplasm. Early season vigor (scored as greater plant stand) was positively associated with canopy light interception and higher seed yield. Plant height also had a significant positive effect on seed yield. Moreover, yield components such as 1000-seed weight, number of bolls per unit area, and boll weight were strongly and positively correlated with seed yield. Focusing on yield-related traits, canopy architecture and expansion, and seed weight may be advantageous over yield per se in breeding for yield improvement.

A pesquisa, aqui relatada, teve por objetivo avaliar o processo de transferência de conhecimento, envolvendo a subsidiária brasileira, a matriz americana e a subsidiária francesa de uma organização multinacional do setor de papel, buscando identificar os elementos de sucesso e o modelo de transferência adotado. Como base para a pesquisa, foram utilizados principalmente os modelos de transferência de conhecimento desenvolvidos por Duguid e Brown (2001), Nonaka e Konno (1998), Dixon (2000) e Fleury; Oliveira Junior; Child (2001). A pesquisa teve caráter qualitativo e foi realizado um estudo de caso único, valendo-se de entrevistas semiestruturadas, análise de documentos e observação para a coleta de informações. A pesquisa apontou, como fatores de sucesso da transferência, a adequada seleção dos coordenadores e dos participantes das equipes envolvidas, o apoio da organização, o estabelecimento de um programa de viagens, visitas, reuniões e atividades de socialização, que motivaram os participantes e apoiaram o desenvolvimento de relações de confiança entre as equipes, facilitando o compartilhamento de conhecimento. Como principais barreiras à transferência, foram apontadas a resistência à mudança por parte de alguns membros da equipe da unidade brasileira, associada à frustração com o fluxo unidirecional de conhecimento e a não valorização do conhecimento local.

The Goffman (1967) and Brown and Levinson (1987) socio-pragmatic theory of face was first devised through speculating on and observing the interaction of individuals. Later research has looked at the phenomenon of group-face (e.g. Spencer-Oatey 2007). In this research we examine how face and facework theory can also be applied to communications made by state actors to the outside world, in other words, whether facework theories could also be applied to national face. To this end we compiled a corpus of all press conferences held by the Ministry of Chinese Foreign Affairs in 2016 and subjected it to quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as comparative analysis with US White House press briefings. Chinese government statements were felt to be a promising genre partly because of the particularly intricate relations China has with its geographically close partners and neighbours and partly because of the supposed special importance accorded to face in Chinese culture (Kádár et al 2013; Chen and Hwang 2016). The techniques we employ in the analyses derive from the field of corpus-assisted discourse studies (Partington, Duguid and Taylor 2013).

This paper presents an English as a foreign language (EFL) drama in language acquisition scriptwriting project that took place at a four-year private university located in Japan. The focus of this project was two-fold: firstly, to see if students’ cognition of situational context improved after completing scriptwriting exercises, and secondly to see if role-playing the scripts increased awareness in the identification of setting, roles of speakers, and purpose while increasing language aptitude. Furthermore, this study addresses the insufficient communicative competence abilities of Japanese students who have had years of structured English study. Their lack of communicative abilities may be attributed to the method of English instruction used in Japan such as focusing on grammar and vocabulary in isolated example sentences. This lack of context in second language (L2) instruction may leave students with limited communicative competence (Brown, Collins & Duguid 1989; South, Gabbitas & Merrill 2008). If students improve their understanding of the context of language use, they may become better equipped to use the language they know. One approach that may help students improve this understanding of context is scriptwriting and drama (Belliveau & Kim 2013; Davies 1990). The results of this study indicate that participating in scriptwriting activities may improve students’ ability to identify the context of conversations.

Plant Sci. 92: 39–43. Lodging may limit crop productivity and hinder the normal process of harvesting crops. Results from 16 yr (1994–2009) of the Flax Co-operative test and from 29 yr (1981–2009) of the Central Bread Wheat Co-operative test, conducted annually for the evaluation of advanced breeding lines at various locations in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada, were used to determine the effect of lodging on the seed yield of these two crop species. Seed yield data were regressed on corresponding lodging scores (1–9 scale) collected from field evaluations. Lodging was more frequently a problem in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) than in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), with average seed yield reductions of 32% and 16%, respectively, when lodging was most severe. Disease has been observed in association with the occurrence of lodging in flax. Further research is necessary to elucidate the participation of airborne and soil microorganisms, particularly pasmo, caused by Septoria linicola (Speg.) Garassini, in the mode and degree to which flax is subjected to, and affected by, lodging.

The diffusion of major new technologies in society is often accompanied by a set of myths that tell us how these technologies will change, clearly for the better, the social and economic fabric of a community. Digital technologies are associated with myths such as the death of distance and of mediators, the end of history and of politics (Brown and Duguid 2000; Mosco 2004). We build on Mosco’s idea of myth as a force shaping discourses around the introduction of new technologies in the context of the deployment of digital artifacts such as digital ID systems and mobile money platforms in the Global South (Mosco 2004). Using the examples of the Unique Identification system (Aadhaar) in India and mobile money in Myanmar, we show how these myths persist long after technologies are in common use. We also examine how, in practice, the use of these technologies seldom aligns with the mythology surrounding them, and it is, instead the moral economy of the communities where they are deployed that mediates their use (Thompson 1971). We argue that local histories of state-making and the larger political economy of technology design can help explain the persistence of the mythology around digital technologies despite the disconnect between myths and reality.

J. Plant Sci. 94: 119–126. Severe infection of the fungal disease known as pasmo, caused by Septoria linicola (Speg.) Garassini, reduces seed yield of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) in western Canada. Pasmo may also indirectly affect seed yield by predisposing flax plants, under favorable weather and soil fertility conditions, to lodge. With the objective of studying the possible association of this disease with the occurrence of lodging and their effect on seed yield, a study was conducted at Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada, during 4 consecutive years (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012), with two fungicide regimes (application and no application) and five rates of nitrogen (N) fertilization (0, 33, 66, 100 and 133% of recommended). The application of pyraclostrobin fungicide reduced disease severity and increased seed yield of flax in the 3 yr (2010, 2011 and 2012) that pasmo infection was detected, and prevented or reduced the occurrence of lodging in the 2 yr (2010 and 2012) with favorable weather conditions for the occurrence of lodging. Increasing rates of N resulted in increased seed yield in 2009 and 2012, regardless of whether fungicide was used or not. Increasing rates of N also increased the severity of pasmo disease in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and of lodging severity in 2010 and 2012. The increase in disease severity due to N occurred in the absence of fungicide in 2011 and when fungicide was applied in 2012, while in 2010 just the effect of N on the two fungicide treatments combined was significant. Only low levels of disease severity (near 20%) were observed when fungicide was applied in 2011, while extreme disease severity (near 100%) occurred in 2012 at all levels of N when fungicide was not applied. The increase in lodging, as N rates increased, was observed only in the absence of fungicide, in both years. The occurrence of lodging took place late in the development of flax.

O juspublicista francês Léon Duguit conquistou, desde os primeiros anos do século XX, um grande número de leitores na Itália, chamando a atenção de grandes nomes do pensamento jurídico da península, tais como Ugo Forti, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando e Santi Romano. No presente trabalho, faz-se um balanço da reverberação de sua obra entre juristas italianos, procurando entender sua extensão e, principalmente, as razões que limitaram seu impacto. Concluímos, assim, que o principal obstáculo ao aprofundamento de sua influência na ciência jurídica italiana foi um certo radicalismo conceitual que o levava a questionar a realidade do Estado, atitude pouco tolerável para uma juspublicística inspirada na Staatslehre alemã. Isso, todavia, não o impediu ainda de ser uma importante referência na discussão de temas como a representação dos interesses, a organização sindical, o contrato coletivo de trabalho, a função social da propriedade mesmo entre juristas próximos ao fascismo, revelando uma apropriação fragmentada de suas teorias, de forma tal a isolar seu “anti-estatalismo”. Já a centralidade atribuída por ele ao conceito de serviço público na delimitação do direito administrativo ganhou relevância na Itália apenas nos anos 50, quando a ciência jurídica francesa já discutia a crise do serviço público.

Mnogobrojni opisni pridjevi u ruskom jeziku imaju dva oblika: dugi (određeni) i kratki (neodređeni). Dugi oblik - novi, nova, novo; kratki oblik - nov, nova, novo. Kratki pridjevi razlikuju se od dugih pridjeva po morfološkim osobinama (ne sklanjaju se, već samo imaju rod i broj) i sintaktičkim funkcijama (ne upotrebljavaju se u funkciji atributa). Dugi oblici nazivaju se atributivnima, a kratki predikativnima. Kratki oblici u rečenici imaju funkciju predikata. Dugi su pridjevski oblici u funkciji atributa i predikata. Kratki su oblici u pravilu svojstveni književnom jeziku. Međutim, postoje slučajevi kad je upotreba kratkoga oblika pridjeva u funkciji predikata obvezna u svim stilovima jezika, naprimjer: kratki pridjev izražava stanje u određenom trenutku ili u određenim uvjetima (Danas je ona bolesna.). Kratki pridjevski oblik u predikatu se upotrebljava uz objekt kojim se ograničava ili precizira značenje (Kći je slična ocu.). S kratkim pridjevima upotrebljavaju se zamjenički prilozi kako; tako, ovako (Kako je ona lijepa! Zimska noć je tako duga.) Navest ćemo i nekoliko primjera koji dokazuju da su se kratki pridjevi ranije koristili kao atributi: средь бела дня, по белу свету, на босу ногу.
