DSpace, a free and open-source software (FOSS) provides the digital platform for building collections of an institution. Due to the lack of the skills to install and configure DSpace, librarians are incapable to conduct it even after the awareness about it. Identifying challenges about DSpace installation is vital to increase its use by librarians. Hence, it aims to explore the understanding of DSpace installation among librarians and to identify aspects of their experiences and feelings while installing DSpace. Librarians' experiences and feelings are important for accepting the software. Librarians were interviewed during the training program conducted on digital library technology from December 2020 to January 2021. Two groups were distinguishing from each other: one is with a library science background and another is with computer science and engineering background. The second group aswas self-sustained to install DSpace, once they got the guidelines for installation. Their views were reflected with the code terms status, exploration, feeling, activities, preferences, and inadequacy. Through their experiences, the aspects of challenges are the less experience of using the command line in computer use, the unavailability of teaching courses on Linux operating system in Library and Information Science (LIS) education, and the lack of self-exploration habits. Practice to Linux commands, incorporate the Linux in the Library Science course, self-exploration, and consistent effort will help librarians in installing DSpace by themselves. Finally, librarians should internalize their goal to act as the administrator for the DSpace, not only as of the operator.

Digital library making has been basic requirements for the modern libraries. Instead of documents in papers, information is acquired and managed in some digital platform. One of the digital library platforms is DSpace, started in 2002. The collection of digital documents in DSpace is named DSpace repository. The main collection in DSpace repository is institutionally generated digital documents; hence, it is also synonymously termed as institutional repository. This study explored the existing Institutional Repository System (IRS) that was built in DSpace software in Nepal. Nepal, in South Asia, developed IRS in 2009. Literature suggested extensive studies about IRS in other South Asian countries, while Nepal was reported rarely. Moreover, Nepal was described as scanter than reality. There are nine IRS built-in DSpace in Nepal, enriching the collection from 101 to 15218. Except for three IRS, all other five IRS have their customized userinterface. They are on the way to improving their collection. Open Learning Education (OLE) Nepal has the highest collection and has diversified types of collections for kids. It is developed as Children's Digital Library. Except for three IRS, all are academic. So, these IRS have accommodated documents for academic purposes. They served students, teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology has been developing the Single Open Information Archive (UOIA) to merge all digital full-text resources created or acquired by the Library. The authors examine the issues of interoperability when exchanging metadata between UOIA built on library automation software and open archives using OAI-PMH technology for metadata acquisition. Interoperability in information exchange between different ALIS is provided, for example, through applying SRU/SRW protocol and metadata scheme, while metadata exchange between OA repositories is provided mainly within Dublin Core (DC) scheme. ALIS – OA metadata transmission with transformation into DC results in information loss and prevents unambiguous reverse transformation. For a long time, DSpace has been the most popular software for open digital repositories. This product enables OAI-PMH metadata acquisition in DC and Qualified DC (QDC) formats, and supports Object Reuse and Exchange (ORE) standard, which enables to describe aggregated resources. ORE in DSpace enables to collect not only metadata but also connected files and to receive other connected data provided by importing source. DSpace uses rather simple ORE format based on Atom XML that allows binding several files of different functionality with RDF-triplets.The OAI-PMH software connector is designed for RNPLS&T SOIA and enables to present metadata in DC, QDC, MARC21, and ORE formats, which supports interoperability in information exchange with OA repositories with DSpace software. Beside metadata transmission, transmission of various data types is possible, e. g. document text or license information. Further development is to expand format structure to represent associated data, in particular using RDF.

Purpose – India occupies second position among the countries that have adopted DSpace open source software for institutional repositories (IRs)/digital libraries (DLs). The purpose of this paper is to examine the reasons for DSpace being preferred over other software. It inspects various instances of Indian web-based DSpace systems including the nature and growth of collection, the geographical distribution of DSpace systems and the types of institutions that adopt and maintain DSpace. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from the official website of DSpace, Google search and from online discussion forums during July 2013 to January 2014. The 132 Indian DSpace links provided in the official DSpace website were examined. Further search was carried out on Google to identify Indian IRs and DLs that are not listed by the official website. A list of Indian DSpace websites prepared by the authors was sent to the online discussion forums for further updating. An online directory of Indian DSpace websites was created using WordPress which provided for the adding of comments. The study is limited to the web-based DSpace IRs and DLs in India. Findings – The majority of the Indian IRs and DLs listed on the official website of DSpace are not visible on the internet. Many links lead to institution websites, commercial websites and personal pages of authors. Out of 132 DSpace links, only 55 are visible on the internet to search and use. Indian libraries prefer DSpace over EPrints, Fedora and Greenstone. Many institutions could not maintain continuity of their DSpace systems in the online environment. Institutions having more funding are maintaining web-based DSpace systems. The size, economic conditions, rate of literacy and number of universities in an Indian state do not influence the maintenance of digital systems. Academic institutions involving universities, technical institutions and colleges lead in the adoption and maintenance of web-based DSpace in India. Private universities and colleges have adopted DSpace for IR/DL. Public libraries constitute a minimum percentage of web-based DSpace instances. Indian courts and Parliament have adopted DSpace. Shodhganga, the Indian ETD project, is running on DSpace. Originality/value – This is the first paper examining the adoption of DSpace by Indian libraries with a focus on online visibility and the strength of collection. It can be used to understand the pattern of technology adoption by Indian libraries over the years.

Purpose This paper aims to provide image repository to the medical professional in an open source platform, which will increase the visibility of Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) image in a network mode; further, the proposed system will reduce the storage cost of the images to significant level. Design/methodology/approach The authors have developed a new institutional repository model for the medical professionals cum radiologists to preserve, store and retrieve medical images from one database with the help of open source software. The authors used JavaScript programming to integrate and develop the DICOM Standard with DSpace. Findings Major outcome of this work is that DICOM images can be accommodated in DSpace without modifying the image properties and keeping intact the various dimensions of image viewing options. Further, it was found that the images are retrieved without any ease because of the robust indexing system. Research limitations/implications Major limitation of this study was the size of the data (5000 DICOM image) with which the authors have tested the system. The scalability of the system has to be tested on various fronts, for which separate study has to be done. Practical implications Once this system is in place, DICOM user can store, retrieve and access the image from Web platform. This proposed repository will be the storehouse of various DICOM images with reasonable storage costs. Originality/value In addition to exploring the opportunities of open source software (OSS) implementation in Medical Fields, this study includes issues related to implementation of open source repository for storing and preserving medical image. This is the first time in Library Science field to create and develop Open Source DICOM Medical Image Library with the help of DSpace. The study will create value for library professionals as well as medical professionals and OSS vendors to understand the medical market in the context of OSS.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the Open Source Software (OSS) market relevant to Indian libraries and more specifically, to review the existing library automation, i.e. Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) and Digital Library (DL) software solutions. Design/methodology/approach – Survey method was adopted to collect data for this study and the sample population for this study included 356 library professionals. Findings – The study findings indicate presence of OSS like Koha and NewGenLib in the ILMS category and Dspace, Eprints and Greenstone in the DL software category in India. The study also indicates that there is considerable interest among Indian libraries to adopt or migrate to OSS. Research limitations/implications – The sample included largely, more than 80 percent, responses from the academic library segment and hence the results and analysis maybe more skewed to the academic library segment. However the implications of this study could be extended to other type of libraries and facilitate library professionals to make software choices with respect to library automation. Originality/value – In addition to exploring the opportunities of OSS implementation in Indian libraries, the study includes issues related to migration, implementation, budget, training, etc. The study would have value for library professionals and OSS vendors to understand the Indian library market in the context of OSS.

Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of the need and current development of document viewers for digitized objects in DSpace repositories, including a local viewer developed for a document collection as like research papers, thesis and dissertation. Design/methodology/approach The authors developed the concept for the to preserve and store all types of document in one data base with the help of open source software (OSS). The authors used Java Script programing to integrated and developed the system. Findings The major finding of our work is that large document file can be accommodated in DSpace without modifying the originality of the documents and viewing the document in a different dimension as a specialist needs. The combination of current technologies such as Google Doc Viewer and the Internet Archive Book Reader, as well as the growing number of digital repositories hosting digitized content, suggests that the DSpace community will probably benefit with an “out-of-the-box.” Originality/value In addition, to exploring the opportunities of OSS implementation in different research institutes, the study includes issues related to the implementation of the open source repository. A number of problems related to the construction of the metadata factory of the digital mathematical library Lobachevskii-DML have been solved. By metadata factory we mean a system of interconnected software tools aimed at creating, processing, storing and managing metadata of digital library objects and allowing integrating created electronic collections into aggregating digital scientific libraries. In order to select the optimal such software tools from existing ones and their modernization:we discussed the features of the presentation of the metadata of documents of various electronic collections related both to the formats used and to changes in the composition and completeness of the set of metadata throughout the entire publication of the corresponding scientific journal;we presented and characterized software tools for managing scientific content and methods for organizing automated integration of repositories of mathematical documents with other information systems;we discussed such an important function of the digital library metadata factory as the normalization of metadata in accordance with the formats of other aggregating libraries. As a result of the development of the metadata factory of the digital mathematical library Lobachevskii-DML, we proposed a system of services for the automated generation of metadata for electronic mathematical collections; we have developed an xml metadata presentation language based on the Journal Archiving and Interchange Tag Suite (NISO JATS); we have created software tools for normalizing metadata of electronic collections of scientific documents in formats developed by international organizations – aggregators of resources in mathematics and Computer Science; we have developed an algorithm for converting metadata to oai_dc format and generating the archive structure for import into DSpace digital storage; we have proposed and implemented methods for integrating electronic mathematical collections of Kazan University into domestic and foreign digital mathematical libraries.

Towards Interoperable Preservation Repositories (TIPR) is a project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create and test a Repository eXchange Package (RXP). The package will make it possible to transfer complex digital objects between dissimilar preservation repositories. For reasons of redundancy, succession planning and software migration, repositories must be able to exchange copies of archival information packages with each other. Every different repository application, however, describes and structures its archival packages differently. Therefore each system produces dissemination packages that are rarely understandable or usable as submission packages by other repositories. The RXP is an answer to that mismatch. Other solutions for transferring packages between repositories focus either on transfers between repositories of the same type, such as DSpace-to-DSpace transfers, or on processes that rely on central translation services. Rather than build translators between many dissimilar repository types, the TIPR project has defined a standards-based package of metadata files that can act as an intermediary information package, the RXP, a lingua franca all repositories can read and write.

AbstractThe purpose of the study is to investigate the digital preservation practices in institutional repositories (IRs) in Nigeria. Data from the IRs developed in university libraries in Nigeria was collected in three phases: initial phone calls, website investigation, and questionnaire. After the phone calls to librarians and website investigation of libraries of the 141 approved universities in Nigeria, the researchers found only 15 university libraries to have developed institutional repositories in Nigeria. Out of these numbers, 12 respondents, representing their university libraries were reached to respond to the questionnaire. Results from the study showed that the majority of IRs in Nigeria used DSpace software to manage their digital contents and that half of the IRs engage in information migration. The study also revealed that the majority of the responding institutions provide long-term digital preservation. Regrettably, most of the IRs do not have a digital preservation policy to guide the implementation of digital preservation for IR contents. Finally, the majority of the respondents indicated that they do not have long-term funding and lack the necessary technical staff with required skills to handle and manage the IR. The findings will inform information professionals, particularly librarians in developing countries who are planning to create institutional repositories and to provide long-term digital preservation of electronic resources in their institutions.

Purpose – Institutional repositories (IR) are usually used to archive and manage digital collections including research results, educational material, etc. Learning management systems (LMS) form a popular basis for e-learning and blended learning. This paper aims to study how to integrate IR and LMS to support accessibility of disabled students and students with learning difficulties (dyslexic students) in higher education. Customised ontologies focusing on disabled students can be used to facilitate indexing, and access of items in the repository. Design/methodology/approach – The authors propose a simple methodological approach to establish an integrating system for supporting accessibility. First, the authors review research works related to adaptive learning environments (ALEs) and blended learning, and discuss issues of the interoperability of IR and LMS. Then, based on the review, the authors discuss the use of an integrated ALE for supporting disabled students in the domain of higher technological education. The integrated system is based on IR, LMS and assistive and adaptive technology. The open source software platform DSpace is used to build up the repository applications Use of the web ontology language (OWL) ontologies is also proposed for indexing and accessing the various, heterogeneous items stored in the repository. Various open source LMS (e.g. openeclass) could be used to build up the integrated system. Finally, the authors describe experimentation with a prototype implemented to provide the mentioned capabilities. Findings – The technology is mature enough for building up integrated systems, combining capabilities of IR and LMS, for supporting disabled students. The use of ontologies focused on disabled students could facilitate the use of such integrated systems. Customisation and operation of a platform, for the selection and use of portions of OWL ontologies, could be based on the open source software Protégé. Such a platform forms a basis to create an appropriate ontology suitable for specific domains, e.g. the domain of technological education. Finally, the authors argue that the combined use of the OWL platform and the DSpace repository with open source LMS platforms could support domain experts for creating customised ontologies and facilitating searching. Originality/value – A new perception of the term integrated system for supporting disabled students in the higher education context is presented. This perception tries to combine the IR technology that supports the self-archiving approach of information, open LMS technology and the user-centred approach to support students and manage the “life of information”.

Purpose This study aims to assess open access (OA) repositories in the field of the health and medicine (H&M) available in the Directory of the Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) by analysing their various facets like geographical distribution, language diversity, collection size, content types, operational status, interoperability, updating policy and software used for content management. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the objectives of the study, the OpenDOAR was selected as a source for identifying the H&M repositories. The required data were manually collected from 1 to 30 April 2014 and analysed using various quantitative techniques to reveal the findings. Findings The results reveal that the OpenDOAR lists 254 repositories in the field of the H&M contributed by the 62 countries of the world, topped by the USA (15.4 per cent), followed by Japan (7.9 per cent) and the UK (7.5 per cent). The majority of the repositories are institutional (187, 73.6 per cent) in nature, having less than 5,000 items (161, 63.4 per cent) in the collection and mostly consisting of articles (76.0 per cent), theses (49.6 per cent), unpublished documents (33.1 per cent) and books (31.9 per cent). The linguistic assessment shows that the majority of the H&M repositories accept content written in English language (71.3 per cent), followed by Spanish (16.1 per cent) and Japanese (7.5 per cent). The updating policy of these repositories is not up to the mark, as only 67.0 per cent of the H&M repositories have been updated from 2008-2012, but the majority are still operational (91.7 per cent) and are compatible (67.3 per cent) with the Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). About 30 software brands, both commercial and open source, have been used by administrators for creating these repositories and managing their content. DSpace is the most popular software used by 88 (34.7 per cent) repositories, followed by EPrints (43, 16.9 per cent) and Digital Commons (18, 7.1 per cent). Research limitations/implications The scope of this study is limited to the health and medical repositories listed in OpenDOAR, and hence the generalisation is to be cautioned. Practical implications This study is useful for library and information professionals and health and medical professionals across the globe. Originality/value This study is the first attempt to analyse the health and medical repositories in OA sites.

Krishikosh is a versatile open access digital repository catering to the needs of Indian National Agricultural Research and Education System (NARES) and has architecture of centralized hosting of content but decentralized management. The Krishikosh has been designed using open source software Dspace and an efficient Integrated Content Management System (ICMS), which has suitability and configuration to meet the requirements of NARES and created dependable digital repository. Each institution in NARES has been configured as community in Dspace having it’s own collections and logo. Each community and collection can be given independent rights to registered users for uploading and managing the contents. Effectively Krishikosh is a collectively managed, centrally aggregated repository with integrated search facility. Krishikosh is a huge repository of theses, reports, articles etc. Keeping track of all the information is hectic and difficult for the user, which results in low usage of the Krishikosh site. Thus, an application with push notification was developed in order to involve the user with the Krishikosh, by sending messages regarding the new upload. Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) server were utilized for implementation of push notification which take the data from the postgreSQL database, which is most advanced open source database. PHP script is used to connect the java programming in android studio, the database and the GCM server. In this study, usage statistics of Krishikosh were also analyzed.

At a time when the learner is occupying the center stage in the whole process of knowledge dissemination and assimilation, it is time for the centers of learning, particularly the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to provide learning resources in multiple formats that are fully mapped to their course curricula. ‘Learners’ Trove’ is one such innovation that takes advantage of the power of Information and Communication Technologies to provide digital platform of learning resources to the students and teachers. Objective: The paper discusses the challenges faced by the students of a semi-urban college in conventional methods in accessing suitable content for their studies and how the introduction of ‘Learners’ Trove’ – a digital platform of learning resources enabled better access to learning resources in multiple formats. Technology or Method: DSpace, a popular open access repository software is used as a platform to host various formats of learning resources. Results: Multimedia learning resources such as ebooks, e journal articles, videos, audios, presentations, scanned copies of the notes distributed by the teachers in the classrooms, simulations, previous years’ question papers, etc., are mapped to the syllabi of respective programs and hosted on a searchable platform, resulting in greater student satisfaction and better performance of the students. Conclusions: There is a palpable sense of optimism among students and teachers about this digital platform and more and more users are actively making use of this platform for their academics. Clinical Impact: Owing to the ready acceptance of Learners’ Trove by the college students, many colleges run by the Society and other colleges in vicinity are now considering designing and developing a similar platform for their faculty and students.

Purpose – Successful learning infrastructures and repositories often depend on well-organized content collections for effective dissemination, maintenance and preservation of resources. By combining semantic descriptions already lying or implicit within their descriptive metadata, reasoning-based or semantic searching of these collections can be enabled and produce novel possibilities for content browsing and retrieval. The specifics and necessities of such an approach, however, make it hard to assess and measure its effectiveness. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Therefore in this paper the authors introduce a concrete methodology toward a pragmatic evaluation of semantic searching in such scenarios, which is exemplified through the semantic search plugin the authors have developed for the popular DSpace repository system. Findings – The results reveal that this approach can be appealing to expert as well as novice users alike, improve the effectiveness of content discovery and enable new retrieval possibilities in comparison to traditional, keyword-based search. Originality/value – This paper presents applied research efforts to employ semantic searching techniques on digital repositories and to construct a novel methodology for evaluating the outcomes against various perspectives. Although this is original in itself, value lies also within the concrete and measurable results presented, accompanied by an analysis, that would be helpful to assess similar (i.e. semantic query answering and searching) techniques in the particular scenario of digital repositories and libraries and to evaluate corresponding investments. To the knowledge there has been hardly any other evaluation effort in the literature for this particular case; that is, to assess the merit and usage of advanced semantic technologies in digital repositories.

Digital preservation activities among law libraries have largely been limited by a lack of funding, staffing and expertise. Most law school libraries that have already implemented an Institutional Repository (IR) chose proprietary platforms because they are easy to set up, customize, and maintain with the technical and development support they provide. The Texas Tech University School of Law Digital Repository is one of the few law school repositories in the nation that is built on the DSpace open source platform.1 The repository is the law school’s first institutional repository in history. It was designed to collect, preserve, share and promote the law school’s digital materials, including research and scholarship of the law faculty and students, institutional history, and law-related resources. In addition, the repository also serves as a dark archive to house internal records.
