In Côte d'Ivoire, in a socio-demographic context dominated by young people, traditional institutions remain, notwithstanding the modernization of society. This article reads how the « Ebeb » institution works in « Lodjukru » society, with a view to enhancing active retirement models. From the interpretive descriptive method, from 15 au 27 mars 2020, the city of Dabou in the south of Côte d'Ivoire, served as a social space for the production of nine (09) life stories collected from three (03) women and six (06) men aged 80 to 96. From the meaning of these accounts, it emerges that among the «Lodjukru», longevity is a concept of production and incorporation of biographical lessons. The Ebeb institutionalizes the social valuation of the power of aging people and reports on the social domestication of retirement in Côte d'Ivoire.

The issue of "illegal" artisanal gold mining is a concern for the state of Côte d'Ivoire. To resolve this phenomenon, measures ranging from awareness-raising to the creation of repression brigades have been taken. Despite these actions, the practice remains. This paper aims to analyse the factors that explain the persistence of 'illegal' artisanal mining in rural Côte d'Ivoire, based on a case study of the sub-prefecture of Hiré, an area where the practice of 'illegal' artisanal mining is developing asymmetrically to that of legal exploitation. The study is essentially qualitative. For data collection, interviews were conducted with different groups of actors who participate in the production system in artisanal mining. The results of the study show that the persistence of artisanal mining is the result of a social innovation that has emerged territorially by establishing itself while leading to a social transformation.

The socio-economic development of Côte d'Ivoire thanks to the coffee-cocoa pairing in the 1980s led to an increase in the flow of immigrants throughout the country. Unfortunately, this economic and social growth could not be sustained over a long period. The economic crisis that hit the country was immediately accompanied by austerity policies steered by international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The immediate consequence of the country's economic constraints has been the destructuring of the labour market, particularly in terms of supply and demand. As a result, the majority of immigrant populations are affected in the same way as nationals by the precariousness of their jobs. Faced with this "unexpected" situation, private or individual initiatives have been taken by immigrant populations to escape and also to seize existing opportunities. Yopougon, Abidjan's largest commune, has seen its commercial spaces "invaded" by Nigerians who have set up micro-businesses. The aim of this article is to establish the socio-demographic profile of 150 immigrant entrepreneurs based in commercial spaces and to identify the specific characteristics of immigrant entrepreneurship in these communities in Yopougon. The study shows that the majority of entrepreneurs are creators from scratch, aged 40 and over, and that this type of entrepreneurship is male-dominated. It should be noted that economic activities are segmented by field and by ethnic group, with the majority of players being Islamic. The location of the economic activity obeys various logics without forgetting that the experiential factor plays an important role in the choice of entrepreneurship as a professional career for Nigerian and Nigerian immigrants.

Since independence, Côte d'Ivoire has been confronted with various socio-political crises. During the first crises that shook the country, the national question appeared as the search for a solution to the imbalances in the relationship between the populations living in Côte d'Ivoire. The actors in these crises were politicians and most social strata. Moreover, in recent crises, specifically the post-electoral crisis of 2010-2011, other social actors than the military were involved. Indeed, children have been recruited and enlisted into the ranks of combatants of all forces involved, despite existing laws and international law (ACAT, 2005). Gangs of children aged between 8 and 18, known by various names including 'microbes' and 'children in conflict with the law', are rife in the District of Abidjan, especially in the communes of Abobo and Anyama. Acts of violence (murders, robberies and other crimes) with knives are perpetrated on the population. As Kouamé Yao (2017) points out, the violence they perpetrate seems to be a rewriting, in an otherwise fragile context, of that perpetrated by the ziguéhis and nouchis, urban youths in search of social visibility and recognition in the 'conjunctural' Côte d'Ivoire of the post-1970s. It has been observed that during pre-electoral and post-electoral crises, these young people, known as microbes, are solicited in order to create disorder among political opponents. Despite all the measures and strategies put in place by the Ivorian state to eradicate the phenomenon, it persists and is growing. This qualitative study required the use of various sources and data collection techniques and attempts to answer the following question: Why does the phenomenon of children in conflict with the law persist? The objective of our paper is to analyse the reasons for the persistence of this phenomenon in the Ivorian capital.

Relations between settlers and colonized in the colony of Côte d'Ivoire have long been marked by mutual distrust and the total domination of the former, namely the settlers over the Indigenous Ivorians. Many frustrations suffered by the latter finally led them to organize themselves to ensure their survival on their own territory now confiscated by the French colonizer. One of the frameworks of this organization was the mutual aid association which appeared in 1924. If the objective of the first indigenous associations was to create a climate of solidarity and mutual aid in a society under strong foreign domination, gradually, these associations are transformed into real trade union and political protest movements. This article, produced on the basis of archival documents and information from various works on the colonial history of Côte d'Ivoire, is a contribution to the study of the social and particularly community life of the Indigenous peoples in the colony of Ivory Coast.

SUMMARYImproving farmers’ knowledge of new technologies and creating conducive learning opportunities, with particular attention to the marginalized poor (women and youth), are major factors in the move towards sustainable agriculture. To explore the gender gap in agricultural knowledge acquisition and adoption in West Africa, we used baseline data collected in 2013 and 2014 in five countries (Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Nigeria and Togo) with 499 surveyed households. The t-test and Kruskal–Wallis test were used for analysis. The most quoted source for acquiring knowledge on rice farming methods was ‘other farmers’, showing the importance of social capital for rural African farmers. In Benin, a gender gap was noted in rice farmers’ access to agricultural knowledge sources, with women being more advantaged. In Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Nigeria and Togo, no significant gender gap was observed in rice farmers’ access to agricultural knowledge sources. Regarding the level of knowledge and use of rice farming methods in Côte d'Ivoire and Niger, significant gender gaps were observed. The gender approach to rural development is having impact in West Africa with regard to farmers’ access to agricultural information. However, interactive rural learning approaches (such as farmer-to-farmer video) need to be resorted to make the technologies’ principles well known and improve the ability of marginalized poor to adopt and or innovate with local or limited resources. This study leads to a better understanding of the relationship between gender, knowledge and use of agricultural technologies in order to enhance marginalized farmers’ adoption of improved innovations.

This exploratory study aims at understanding, through the theory of conventions, the social and psychosocial springs underlying the perpetuation of FGM in Côte d'Ivoire. It takes place in the northern and western regions, traditionally favorable to this practice. The approach consisted of interviewing 1008 subjects (women, children, circumcisers, administrative authorities and NGOs) by means of a questionnaire. It concludes with suggestions for strengthening policies in this field.

Women's access to land ownership in Côte d'Ivoire remains a challenge despite a multitude of legal and institutional arsenal favouring their access to land ownership. Moreover, Article 12 of the Ivorian Constitution reaffirms equal access to property for women and men. However, it is clear that the above-mentioned difficulties persist. What are the explanatory elements of land insecurity in rural areas for women? The legal and institutional elements alone are not sufficient to understand this work. Beyond the usual explanatory factors, a reading based on intersectionality allows for an in-depth analysis. In fact, this work first highlights the modes of land tenure and their recompositions, the modes of access and their recompositions, and the organisation of society structures access to land and agrarian practices. Since these elements alone are not sufficient to explain the existence of structural gaps and inequalities of access between women, the theory of intersectionality through the concepts of ethnicity, gender and class (social position and social capital that engenders mobilisable economic, social and political resources). The content analysis enabled the categorisation of women and highlighted the positionalities that facilitate or hinder their access to land ownership. In the end, this study showed that there are inequalities between women in access to land ownership insofar as those with low social capital cannot benefit from full access to their land rights, which confirms our central hypothesis that women's access to land ownership is a function of patrilineal and matrilineal societies and modes of land tenure and their recomposition, associated with the intersection of women's economic, social and political resources in Côte d'Ivoire.

AbstractThis is an ethnography of internet scams in Abidjan through which I attempt to develop a theory of digital sorcery. The brouteurs of Côte d'Ivoire impersonate Europeans in social media profiles and seduce others into falling in love with them. After months of flirtatious messaging and photo exchanges, disaster strikes their avatar and they ask for an emergency wire transfer from their digital lover. While millions of euros of income are sent to Abidjan every year, the brouteurs say they can no longer succeed without the use of occult forces, and they turn to marabouts for assistance. During my fieldwork in 2015, rumours circulated that brouteur wealth depended on the blood sacrifice of children for its success. As Ivoirians increasingly employ smartphones and social media in their daily life, the anxieties concerning the illusions and manipulations of the virtual world become enmeshed with those of the occult second world. I suggest that the overlap between hacker technology, con artistry and occult power outlined in Ivoirian urban rumour suggests a model for rethinking the space of virtuality in the global economy as a form of magical semiosis, one that can be every bit as vitality draining as witchcraft itself.

Prostate cancer is a pathology that causes casualties among the male population in Côte d'Ivoire. This pandemic kills silently but can be cured at the early stage of detection. All the actors in the fight against this pathology have mainly focused on the classical channels of communication and nonmedia. In the era of the information society, there is, however, a culture of digital technology in Côte d'Ivoire where the use of social networks is now part of the habits. While mass communication campaigns hinder efforts to raise awareness for early detection, more discreet and more customizable social networks have the advantage of reaching men who feel demeaned and humiliated when it comes to the «shameful, humiliating and dishonorable» disease of prostate cancer. The objectives of this research are to assess the impact of prostate cancer awareness campaigns on male population through traditional channels of communication and to analyze the determinants of the evolution of prostate cancer, despite all actions taken to propose solutions to curb the evolution of the disease. With the quantitative and qualitative approaches, the hypothesis that shows that there is a significant relationship between the evolution of prostate cancer among the male population and the late detection of this disease was confirmed. The communication strategies proposed by the various actors will then be effective, provided that social networks are associated with conventional media and non-media.

AbstractPractices of Provider-Initiated HIV Testing and Counseling (PITC) remains suboptimal in Côte d’Ivoire. The aim of this survey was to identify the practices and obstacles to PITC among healthcare professionals in Côte d'Ivoire. A nationally representative cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2018 by telephone among three separate samples of midwives, nurses and physicians practicing in Côte d'Ivoire. The number of HIV tests proposed during consultation in the month preceding the survey was collected for each professional. Factors associated with the number of proposed tests were identified through ordinal logistic regression models. A total of 298 midwives, 308 nurses and 289 physicians were interviewed. Midwives proposed the test more frequently, followed by nurses and physicians. Among midwives, a higher number of proposed tests was associated with the perception that HIV testing does not require specific consent compared to other diseases (aOR 4.00 [95% CI 1.37–14.29]). Among nurses, having received HIV training and the presence of community HIV counselors were associated with a higher number of proposed tests (aOR 2.01 [1.31–3.09] and aOR 1.75 [1.14–2.70], respectively). For physicians, the presence of a voluntary testing center was associated with a higher number of proposed tests (aOR 1.69 [1.01–2.86]). PITC practices and barriers differed across professions. Beyond improving environmental opportunities such as dedicated staff or services, strengthening the motivations and capabilities of healthcare professionals to propose testing could improve PITC coverage.

How do former armed militants exercise local political power after civil wars end? Building on recent advances in the study of "rebel rulers" and local goods provision by armed groups, this article offers a typology of ex-rebel commander authority that emphasizes two dimensions of former militants' power: local-level ties to civilian populations ruled during civil war and national-level ties to post-conflict state elites. Put together, these dimensions produce four trajectories of ex-rebel authority. These trajectories shape whether and how ex-rebel commanders provide social goods within post-conflict communities and the durability of ex-rebels' local authority over time. We illustrate this typology with qualitative evidence from northern Côte d'Ivoire. The framework yields theoretical insights about local orders after civil war, as well as implications for peacebuilding policies.

This study proposes to examine the situation of social cohesion in Côte d'Ivoire. To do this a survey is conducted on a sample of 1536 Ivoirians in the four major regions of Côte d’Ivoire in both rural and urban areas. This sample is composed of 60 ethnic groups grouped into four (04) groups. The size of the sample obtained by the quota method (region, sex, agglomeration, age (18 years and over) socio-professional situation) is calculated taking into account the data of the last General Census of Population and Housing (RGPH., 2014). The results reveal that the Ivorian aware of his role also relies on public authorities to reduce disparities and polarizations. This will give people the impression that they are involved in a common enterprise, that they face the same challenges and are part of the same community.

The aim of this study is to obtain the determinants of spatial job search in urban Côte d'Ivoire. Due to the purpose of this study, we used the theory of Job search and a qualitative response model. The results indicated that the proximity to a local employment agency and social composition of the district play a significant role based on the decision of spatial job search. The findings of this study broadly confirmed the work of other authors in developed countries.

According to Gijs (2011) 2.5 billion people in the world do not have access to basic health care. In Côte d'Ivoire, the State has made population access a priority. Thus, sanitary infrastructures were built and equipped (PNDS, 2016). However, the problem of access to health services remains. The city of GrandBassam, located in the south-east of Côte d'Ivoire, has a wide range of health structures. Yet there are still people who still do not have access to health care. According to the RASS (2015), 25% of the population of Grand-Bassam still does not use health services. The purpose of this article is to identify the determinants of the access of the population of Grand-Bassam to health services. The methodological approach adopted to conduct this study took into account a bibliographic synthesis and the administration of a questionnaire. This study shows that perception of distance, income of head of household, perception of cost of care, household size, educational level, and age of households are the factors that determine access health services in the city of Grand-Bassam.

Abstract:This article examines the effects of the post-2002 sociopolitical crisis in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, on urban and peri-urban agriculture. Based on the case study of Abidjan, it argues for a conceptualization of sustainability that includes social as well as environmental dimensions and focuses on coping strategies of producers and merchants. In Abidjan, these strategies included internal migration within the city and its periphery, the use of organic fertilizers, and changes in market structure. The study illustrates how such strategies allowed producers to continue to supply produce to the market, despite the difficulties of war.

The first-difference version of a source-differentiated almost ideal demand system is used to estimate demand for Ivorian rice imports. The results indicate that Thailand will benefit most from an expansion of imports of luxury rice and broken rice products. Vietnam will gain from growth in the market for standard rice. The results also suggest that adoption of a new 35 percent tariff policy to protect the domestic industry will not be enough to improve social welfare in Côte d'Ivoire in spite of increased production value.

AbstractThis article examines the resurgence of hunter associations (donzo ton) in Côte d'Ivoire during the 1990s in the context of game depletion, rising crime rates, and a dysfunctional state. Initiated hunters (donzow) are widely respected by the general public for their mystical powers and potent amulets which protect them from malevolent forces in the natural and social worlds. The donzow's success in reducing crime in northern rural areas led to an expansion of the dozon ton to the national level, as donzow were increasingly employed as private security guards in the country's major cities. The government and political parties also employed donzow to complement the police and gendarmes in maintaining order during the 1995 presidential elections. The attempt by politicians to manipulate the donzo ton during re-election campaigns was frustrated by the decentralised structure of the hunters' organisation and the diversity of its membership. Fearing that the donzo ton would become a politically destabilising force, successive governments have attempted to restrict its activities to the northern savanna region. The policy of containing the donzo ton to its so-called ‘original cultural hearth’ is discussed in the framework of the national cultural identity ideology of ivoirité and its xenophobic political manifestations around the 2000 presidential elections.

The article offers an empirical perspective regarding customary land sales in Côte d'Ivoire, focusing on their socio-political embeddedness as well as on the implications of such processes for the content of the rights and duties transferred. Two interlinked aspects of land transfers, which usually come together in African contexts, are to be taken into account: rights and obligations regarding land access and control (‘the land resource dimension’), and rights and obligations regarding group membership, and more generally the socio-political dimensions that condition the social recognition and effectiveness of the transfer of land rights (‘the socio-political dimension’). These two dimensions are empirically explored, together with the processes of their connection and possible disconnection/reconnection. We show that the diverging interpretations of land transfers, from emic as well as from etic viewpoints, do not necessarily correspond to mutually exclusive explanatory models, or to a simple transition phase from customary to ‘pure’ market land transfers. Access to land may become commoditized without extinguishing the socio-political dimension of land transactions. Another point is that the articulation of these two dimensions of land transfers is a specific and always contextualized issue. This has direct consequences on the legitimacy of land transfers as well as on the security of the stranger right holder within the local community and more generally on the politicization of land issue.

The present article is the result of investigations to try to understand the persistence of illegal artisanal gold mining in Côte d'Ivoire where the phenomenon, although illegal, continues to grow for about twenty years. Relying on the case of the Yaouré area, the study was conducted mainly from the consultation of secondary data and groups and key informant interviews. Survey data indicate that the illegal artisanal gold mining activity is a very lucrative business in which many players involved at various levels and with specific roles, are catered for at financially. The presence of people from the modern environment supposed to fight against clandestine gold mining continues certainly an explanatory factor for the persistence of this illegal activity itself. Other causes for the development of illegal gold mining are the poor sales of traditional agricultural products (cocoa and coffee) and ignorance of the negative impacts of this activity on the biophysical and human environment by most of those involved in the sector. It is clear from this study that ultimately illegal artisanal gold mining in the Yaouré, and certainly also in Ivory Coast, is a total social fact; Also, the fight against this phenomenon, to give the expected results, must not be limited to sporadic acts of repression against well diggers and other ore washers, weak link in the chain of illegal production of gold.

This article analyses the political, social, and economic factors that contributed to the Ivorian crisis-armed conflict and the ramifications of the conflict from 2002-2011 on Ivorians. It applies Adam Przeworski's eclectic political theory as the analytical framework. The study utilized a qualitative research design and data was obtained from key informants from the following three regions: Abidjan, Bouake, and Odienne. Varied participants were purposively selected and interviewed from various areas: academia, and Foreign Service including diplomats, politicians, civil servants, teachers, traders, university students, and refugees ensuring diverse perspectives. The findings revealed that the armed conflict affected the political, religious/cultural, social, and economic lives and the cohesion of the Ivorian people. Also, the armed conflict retarded the progress of the country and created a sense of distrust, disunity, and discrimination. The conflict hurt the health of the Ivorians, especially HIV/AIDS patients and the entire people's access to health facilities.

Abstract:Locating activity hotspots – areas of higher density, more intense use, or distinct social units – is a prerequisite for answering many questions in animal ecology. However, for many species, carrying out such research from direct observations in tropical habitat is time-consuming and unrealistic for non-habituated animals. This study aimed to locate chimpanzee home ranges from transect nest counts. For validation purposes, 233 line transects were sampled within the home ranges of four habituated social groups of chimpanzees in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. In total, 373 km of transects were surveyed over 188 days and 683 nests of chimpanzee were recorded. First, we characterized heterogeneity of nest distribution patterns, including variation in density and group size within the area. Second, we used scan statistics, a likelihood-based cluster technique to locate chimpanzee social groups and compared them with the known home range boundaries. Chimpanzee nest distribution was characterized by a positive density and group-size gradient away from the range periphery. Furthermore, nest distribution clusters corresponding to the four groups could be successfully identified, although additional clusters for, for example, low-density areas between social groups seem to be an unavoidable by-product. The approach taken can be extended to a wide spectrum of data stemming from direct observations, camera traps, acoustic or genetic sampling to derive information about structure and patchiness of wild animal populations.

The objective of this research is to analyze the mechanisms of social regulation of witchcraft in Atchan's community and its consequences. This study took place in five Atchan (Ébrié) villages in the municipality of Songon (Autonomous District of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire). The survey was conducted among thirty-five individuals using a qualitative data collection technique. The study revealed that the issue of witchcraft can be dealt with in three ways: mistreatment, banishment, and religious approach. And yet the concept of witchcraft appears to take on a subjective character. The difficulty encountered on this issue relates to the availability of evidence and the causal link with alleged offenses. Despite its subjectivism, witchcraft remains a socio-cultural reality that causes many inconveniences to the accused and their families and the entire community. This situation challenges the public authorities and calls for solutions to take into account respect for human dignity.

Pregnancy is a physiological condition that requires prenatal followup during which medical care ensures that complications in childbirth are prevented and that a healthy child is born as much as possible. It is therefore important for pregnant women to undergo a number of clinical examinations, including blood tests and HIV / AIDS testing, which are in the process of being integrated into the monitoring of women at the primary health care. However, pregnant women do not systematically use these practices in Urban Sanitary Training in Côte d'Ivoire generally and in Bouaké in particular. The free choice of women to submit to the various tests, the health benefits of which are the subject of recurrent information campaigns, does not always lead to their rigorous application during prenatal consultations. It therefore appears that the resistances or the sometimes unsystematic choices of acceptance of the tests and their referents become the object of reflection in the face of the challenge of improving the safe motherhood rate and the attainment of a generation without HIV-AIDS. What are the social attitudes and perceptions related to blood tests and HIV-AIDS testing in pregnant women ? The aim of this study is to understand the social logics underlying the positive or negative attitude of pregnant women to blood tests and the HIV-AIDS test. To address this concern, an essentially qualitative study was carried out among 16 pregnant women and the medical staff of the Urban Sanitary Formation of Ahougnansou in Bouaké (Côte d'Ivoire). The main finding of this study is that attitudes of pregnant women have links to socially situated representations of the disease, stigma, education, income, and perceived risks to social and marital relationships.

The article analyzes the impact of environmental determinants on spelling in learners at the preparatory elementary school. It shows how spelling in learners can be influenced by environmental factors causing dysorthographia. The aim of the study is to analyze the effect of the social environment on students' written productions by showing more specifically that orthographic distortions depend to a large extent on the quality of the social environment. The survey is being carried out in preparation for primary school (CP1) in three departments of Côte d'Ivoire. Evaluations are proposed to process data from the chi-square. The quantitative method is preferred and the experimental approach makes it possible to conclude that disadvantaged environments favor dysorthographia more in learners.

The present study was conducted among 100 poultry farmers through a formal survey from July to December 2021 in the autonomous district of Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). With no information on quail farming organization, the objective was to understand the social and technical characteristics. It appears that the municipality of Bingerville has a significantly higher difference than the other municipalities (p < 0.05), unlike Marcory, which has the lowest rate of farms. Quail farming consists of 8% nationals and 92% non-nationals, with 89.8% men and 10.2% women, of which those in the age group of 30 to 45 years account for 65.31% (p < 0.01). The age groups of 45 years and above, and 20 to 30 years represent 18.37% and 10.20%, respectively. Among the 98% educated quail farmers, 48.98% have a higher education level, 38.78% have a secondary level, and 10.20% have a primary level. As for quail farming experience, 71.43% have less than 3 years, 14.29% have between 3 and 6 years, and over 6 years. Furthermore, the farms are of mono-specific type (14.29%) and plurispecific type (85.71%) with cage housing (72.45%) and floor housing (27.55%). The quails, originating from hatcheries (8.16%) or purchased (91.84%), are managed in single flocks (85.71%) or multiple flocks (14.29%) for the purpose of reproduction (97.96%) or meat production (14.29%). Quail farming is practiced by all populations with diversified techniques in the district.

This paper uses a qualitative approach to analyze the 'fear' of the COVID-19 pandemic in different socio- cultural contexts within communities in Abidjan. Fear-related behavior is a crucial challenge for public policy. Using qualitative methods such as participant observation, interviews with local actors on fear in urban and rural areas. It shows that fear is based on mass media propaganda about the seriousness of the disease and its disruptive effects on the social order that the ideologies of "fear" oscillate between mistrust and resilience of populations leading to a recomposition of social relations. Ultimately, the management of the fear of covid-19 is a perception of a double perversity.

AbstractOn the strength of research in 1992–95 and 1998 this article discusses the way Muslim women dress in Bouaké, Côte D'Ivoire, and what it tells us about the trajectory of their lives and view of the world. Arguing that fashion is emblematic of processes of identification, it seeks to explain how young women come to be situated and position themselves in these processes. To do so, it examines the processes through a life course analysis that takes into account local versionings of tradition and aesthetics, Muslim cosmology and ideals of Western modernity. The article shows that as young women gain social maturity and assume the socially defined status of adult they dress and act increasingly in a manner that emphasises Muslim identity. The various ways in which they use dress reflect the stance they adopt towards competing versionings of Islam.

ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes the funeral expenditures of Gouro women in west central Côte d'Ivoire. The economic resources derived from the commercialization of food products have created a competitive relationship between the sexes, leading to the transgression of social and cultural norms by women called "fighting women" in male spaces. Their empowerment is based on financial contributions to funerals that were previously the sole responsibility of the agnatic group. This study examines the different forms of legitimization of Gouro women's changing status in funeral ceremonies. To do so, we have relied on ethnography as a method of observation, and as a means of producing meaning about the transformation of gender relations.

The armed conflict that ravaged Côte d'Ivoire after the post-election crisis in november 2010 was sparked by several factors (land disputes, armed uprising of september 2002, tribal militias conquest of state power). In the regions of Guémon and Cavally that formed the epicenter of the war, intercommunal land disputes were instrumental in the outbreak of the war. These tensions between peasants have long caused confusion in the far west forest and contributed in part to the social division between indigenous and migrant communities. This qualitative study based on the phenomenological approach and firstly analyses the dynamics of these communal land disputes before the post-election crisis of 2010. Then, it situates the impact of these conflicts in the social division between communities.

ABSTRACTIn 1918, Faith Tabernacle Congregation was established in southern colonial Ghana. This Philadelphia-based church flourished in the context of colonialism, cocoa, and witchcraft, spreading rapidly after the 1918–19 influenza pandemic. In this context, several healing cults also proliferated, but Faith Tabernacle was particularly successful because the church offered its members spiritual, social, and legal advantages. The church's leadership was typically comprised of young Christian capitalist men, whose literacy and letter writing enabled the establishment of an American church without any missionaries present. By 1926, when Faith Tabernacle began its decline, at least 177 branches had formed in southern Ghana, extending into Togo and Côte d'Ivoire, with over 4,400 members.

The construction and acceptance of the identity or sexual orientation of sexual minorities by society and the individual are realities that are constantly in crisis. This reality is all the more perceptible in societies where minorities are strongly discriminated against as a result of certain social considerations. In Côte d'Ivoire, the legal vacuum on the issue of sexual minorities leaves them prey to practices that are sometimes demeaning to certain members of the community. This article provides an insight into the lives of some of Côte d'Ivoire's sexual minorities (MSM, TG and Lesbian) and the hesitations that mark the construction of their gender identity. Based on a qualitative approach with four (04) leaders of the LGBTQ+ community on the one hand, and referring to social identity theory on the other, it emerges that the construction process is discontinuous or disjointed due to hesitations created by internal and external factors. Internally, the individual's decisions or choices help to create hesitations or set up these situations. From an external point of view, the family or social context and certain discriminatory behaviours with regard to the sexual orientation of individuals have a strong influence on the acceptance and definition of a gender identity within this category of the population.
