We show that the dramatic dependence of pressure on the parameters of the inter-molecular potential can be exploited to tune them to their best values. We support the viability of this strategy by a careful study of a fully diffusive Lennard–Jones fluid, showing that Lennard–Jones parameters can be easily optimized to better than a 1% accuracy.

The increasingly widespread use of synchrotron-radiation sources and cryo-preparation of samples in macromolecular crystallography has led to a dramatic increase in the number of macromolecular structures determined at atomic or near-atomic resolution. This permits expansion of the structural model to include anisotropic displacement parameters Uij for individual atoms. In order to explore the physical significance of these parameters in protein structures, it is useful to be able to compare quantitatively the electron-density distribution described by the refined Uij values associated with corresponding crystallographically independent atoms. This paper presents the derivation of an easily calculated correlation coefficient in real space between two atoms modeled with anisotropic displacement parameters. This measure is used to investigate the degree of similarity between chemically equivalent but crystallographically independent atoms in the set of protein structural models currently available from the Protein Data Bank.

Low temperature oxidized core-shelled magnetite is paramount important in recording geomagnetic field. To characterize the effects of transition zone between the core-shell on the magnetic properties of low temperature oxidation of magnetite, micromagnetic models of hysteresis parameters and microstructures of a multi-layer core-shelled model were systematically investigated by MERRILL (Micromagnetic Earth Related Rapid Interpreted Language Laboratory). Numerical simulations indicate that SD particles (<70 nm) remain highly uniform magnetization, but show decreasing coercivities as oxidation preceeds. For fine SV particles (80 nm to 120 nm), the hysteresis parameters respectively increase and dramatic decrease at the early and late stage of oxidation, and the micromagnetic behaviors vary significantly. Finally the hysteresis parameters of larger SV (>130) particles remain nearly unchanged during oxidation. It indicates that fine SV particles are more sensitive to oxidation, and dominate the dramatic change of experiment observation. Overall, low temperature oxidation of magnetite preferring a multi-layer coupled oxidation process from outside to interior and is capable of recording paleomagnetic signals.

AbstractAn acute outbreak of Taenia hydatigena cysticercosis, causing mortality in 5 of 21 (23.8%) female lambs, is reported. Gross post-mortem examinations and histology showed Cysticercus tenuicollis as the cause of death. Biochemical parameters in infected lambs confirmed severe hepatitis. Praziquantel, given once at 15 mg/kg body weight (bw), was administered and a dramatic improvement in the clinical condition and biochemical parameters was observed up to 30 days following treatment.

Inner flow field numerical simulation model of conical nozzle was established. The relationship between conical nozzle structural parameters and its performance were obtained with simulation research. Simulation results show that the maximum outlet velocity of conical nozzle and the fluctuation range of radial velocity at outlet are determined by its convergence angle α and slenderness ratio Cp. With the increasing of α, the maximum outlet velocity of nozzle is increased at first and then reduced. When α is small, the fluctuation range of radial velocity at outlet is minute. When α is big, the fluctuation range of radial velocity at outlet is dramatic. With the increasing of Cp, the maximum outlet velocity of nozzle is increased at first and then reduced. When Cp is small, the fluctuation range of radial velocity at outlet is obvious. When Cp is big, the fluctuation range of radial velocity at outlet is minute. The optimal structural parameters of the nozzle are α = 40°, Cp =30°. Experiments of conical nozzle performance with different α were carried out. Experimental results show that ejection range of water jet is maximal when α = 40°.

The energy dependence of spatiotemporal characteristics of particle emission region is studied for charged pions produced in nuclear collisions. No dramatic change is observed for the HBT parameters with increasing of the center-of-mass (c.m.) energy per nucleon-nucleon pair,sNN, forsNNof a few GeV to a few TeV. The emission duration is obtained to be almost independent of the c.m. energy within the measurement uncertainties. The analytic function is suggested for a smooth approximation of the energy dependence of the main HBT parameters. The fits demonstrate reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Predictions are made for future LHC and FCC experiments.

The use of slurries of conducting particles has been considered a way to extend the electrode area in some energy storage electrochemical cells. When suspensions of conducting particles are used in electrolytes a decreased impedance is observed, even for concentrations much lower than the theoretical percolation limits. Indeed, it is known that polarization occurs when a conducting material is immersed in an electrolyte in presence of electric fields, and bipolar electrochemistry processes may occur. This work demonstrates the dramatic drop in resistance for electrochemical cells with just a few macroscopic conducting pieces immersed in the electrolyte, in the absence of any electrical contact, through bipolar induction. Furthermore, mediation of soluble redox species between adjacent induced poles of opposite charge results in an additional mechanism for charge transfer, contributing further to the decrease in impedance. Relevant parameters like size, geometry, and spatial occupation of inducible pieces within the electric field, are relevant. Remarkably, the effects observed can explain some empirical observations previously reported for carbon suspensions and slurries. Thus, no electronic percolation requiring particle contact, nor ordering, are needed to explain the good performance associated to lowered impedance These results suggest new engineering designs for electrochemical cells with enhanced currents.

State-of-the-art computerized stereology systems combine high-resolution video microscopy and hardwaresoftware integration with stereological methods to assist users in quantifying multidimensional parameters of importance to biomedical research, including volume, surface area, length, number, their variation and spatial distribution. The requirement for constant interactions between a trained, non-expert user and the targeted features of interest currently limits the throughput efficiency of these systems. To address this issue we developed a novel approach for automatic stereological analysis of 2-D images, Verified Computerized Stereoanalysis (VCS). The VCS approach minimizes the need for user interactions with high contrast [high signal-to-noise ratio (S:N)] biological objects of interest. Performance testing of the VCS approach confirmed dramatic increases in the efficiency of total object volume (size) estimation, without a loss of accuracy or precision compared to conventional computerized stereology. The broad application of high efficiency VCS to high-contrast biological objects on tissue sections could reduce labor costs, enhance hypothesis testing, and accelerate the progress of biomedical research focused on improvements in health and the management of disease.

Introduction Spontaneous blood pressure drop within the first 24 h has been reported following arterial recanalisation in ischaemic stroke patients. We aimed to assess if spontaneous blood pressure drop within the first hour after mechanical thrombectomy is a marker of early neurological recovery. Patients and methods Retrospective observational single-centre study including ischaemic stroke patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy. Blood pressure parameters from admission, mechanical thrombectomy start, mechanical thrombectomy end and hourly within 24 h after mechanical thrombectomy were reviewed. Primary outcome was early dramatic neurological recovery (8-point-reduction in NIHSS or NIHSS ≤ 2 at 24 h). Secondary outcome was functional independence at 90 days (mRankin 0–2). Results We included 458 patients in our analysis. Two-hundred (43.7%) patients achieved dramatic neurological recovery following mechanical thrombectomy. One hour after mechanical thrombectomy end, median systolic blood pressure was significantly different between outcome groups (129 vs. 138 mmHg, p = 0.005) and a higher drop in median systolic blood pressure was seen in the dramatic neurological recovery group (15 vs. 9 mmHg). Optimal cut-off for predicting dramatic neurological recovery was a systolic blood pressure drop of 10.5 mmHg (sensitivity 0.54, specificity 0.55, AUC 0.55). On multivariate analysis, spontaneous systolic blood pressure drop was associated with higher odds of achieving dramatic neurological recovery (OR for 10 mmHg blood pressure drop 1.14, 95% CI 1.01–1.29, p = 0.04). No significative association between any blood pressure parameter drop and functional independence at 90 days was found. Discussion We hypothesised that spontaneous systolic blood pressure drop is a marker of successful reperfusion and, therefore, a marker of improvement of cerebral autoregulation due to the reduced final ischaemic core. Conclusion Spontaneous systolic blood pressure drop after mechanical thrombectomy is an early predictor of dramatic neurological recovery.

Electron crystallography of thin three-dimensional (3D) protein crystals requires very exact determination of tilt angles and spot profiles to obtain correct merging of diffraction spot amplitudes. The reciprocal lattice of 3D microcrystals consists of ellipsoidal spot profiles which are very extended in the direction normal to the crystal face (z*). To extrapolate from the intensity measured in a section to the total spot intensity, two features need to be known very exactly: 1. the orientation of reciprocal lattice relative to the Ewald sphere, 2. the 3D-shape of the spot cloud.Fig. 1 shows a tilt series of one frozen hydrated catalase crystal, in the order of recording. The third diffraction pattern gives the highest resolution because it is untilted and therefore the electrons have the shortest path length. In the current experimental data taken at 120 keV electron energy inelastic scattering within the crystal leads to a dramatic loss of elastic information in highly tilted patterns.

It is known that deviation from the Drude law is dramatic in most electronically conductive nanomaterials. A brief review of this topic is given, and it is shown that a series sequence of transport involving grains and grain boundaries produces a type of Lorentz resonance (non-Drude behavior) in nanomaterials. The physical parameters deduced from this model are reasonably good.

Glycomacropeptide (GMP) represents a good alternative protein source in Phenylketonuria (PKU). In a mouse model, it has been suggested to exert a prebiotic role on beneficial gut bacteria. In this study, we performed the 16S rRNA sequencing to evaluate the effect of 6 months of GMP supplementation on the gut microbiota of nine PKU patients, comparing their bacterial composition and clinical parameters before and after the intervention. GMP seems to be safe from both the microbiological and the clinical point of view. Indeed, we did not observe dramatic changes in the gut microbiota but a specific prebiotic effect on the butyrate-producer Agathobacter spp. and, to a lesser extent, of Subdoligranulum. Clinically, GMP intake did not show a significant impact on both metabolic control, as phenylalanine values were kept below the age target and nutritional parameters. On the other hand, an amelioration of calcium phosphate homeostasis was observed, with an increase in plasmatic vitamin D and a decrease in alkaline phosphatase. Our results suggest GMP as a safe alternative in the PKU diet and its possible prebiotic role on specific taxa without causing dramatic changes in the commensal microbiota.

The nature of the vlf atmospheric noise can have a dramatic effect on the performance of the vlf receivers. To understanding how the receivers will perform in different locations and time, the key is proper predicting the critical parameters of the vlf atmospheric noise. Based on the purpose, according to the historical data and the corresponding frequency and parameter variation chart, established the data fitting algorithm to predict the critical parameters of the vlf atmospheric noise. By simulating and comparing with the measured data, testified the effectiveness of the vlf atmospheric noise prediction method. To grasp the change rule of critical vlf noise parameters with time and geographical position is helpful to improve the vlf communication effectiveness.

Radiolabelled antibodies against tumours are being studied intensely for their use in tumour detection and tumour destruction. Although a host of different tumour types can be localised, results at present are no better than other scanning techniques. In addition no tumour has been eradicated using labelled antibodies. Dramatic improvements will depend upon a fuller understanding of tumour cell biology and optimising all the parameters involved.

A sudden jump in the value of the state variable in a certain dynamical system can be studied through a catastrophe model. This paper presents an application of catastrophe model to solve psychological problems. Since we will have three psychological aspects or parameters, intelligence (I), emotion (E), and adversity (A), a Swallowtail catastrophe model is considered to be an appropriate one. Our methodology consists of three steps: solving the Swallowtail potential function, finding the critical points up to and including threefold degenerates, and fitting the model into our measured data. Using a polynomial curve fitting derived from the potential function of Swallowtail catastrophe model, relations among three parameters combinations are analyzed. Results show that there are catastrophe phenomena for each relation, meaning that a small change in one psychological aspect may cause a dramatic change in another aspect.

In eukaryotic cells, the onset of mitosis involves cyclin molecules which interact with proteins of the cdc2 family to produce active kinases. In vertebrate cells, cyclin A dependent kinases become active in S- and pro-phases, whereas a cyclin B-dependent kinase is mostly active in metaphase. It has recently been shown that, when added to Xenopus egg extracts, bacterially produced A- and B-type cyclins associate predominantly with the same kinase catalytic subunit, namely p34cdc2, and induce its histone H1 kinase activity with different kinetics. Here, we show that in the same cell free system, both the addition of cyclin A and cyclin B changes microtubule behavior. However, the cyclin A-dependent kinase does not induce a dramatic shortening of centrosome-nucleated microtubules whereas the cyclin B-dependent kinase does, as previously reported. Analysis of the parameters of microtubule dynamics by fluorescence video microscopy shows that the dramatic shortening induced by the cyclin B-dependent kinase is correlated with a several fold increase in catastrophe frequency, an effect not observed with the cyclin A-dependent kinase. Using a simple mathematical model, we show how the length distributions of centrosome-nucleated microtubules relate to the four parameters that describe microtubule dynamics. These four parameters define a threshold between unlimited microtubule growth and the establishment of steady-state dynamics, which implies that well defined steady-state length distributions can be produced by regulating precisely the respective values of the dynamical parameters. Moreover, the dynamical model predicts that increasing catastrophe frequency is more efficient than decreasing the rescue frequency to reduce the average steady state length of microtubules. These theoretical results are quantitatively confirmed by the experimental data.

The article presents experimental data on the impact of high dose gamma-radiation exposure (6 Gy) on immune system, lipid oxidation products (LOPs) and antioxidant defense system (AODS) enzymes activity. The study revealed that high dose radiation exposure suppressed the cell-mediated immunity especially with respect to T-lymphocytes and their subpopulations as well as immune defense and adaptation mechanisms. Ionizing radiation exposure led to increase of conjugated lipid dienes and malondialdehyde (MDA), and to inhibition of catalase and glutathione peroxidise activity, thus promoting oxidative stress in most of the examined samples. The results indicate dramatic changes in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system under the radiation stress. Both cell-mediated and humoral immunity inhibition, mononuclear phagocyte system suppression and lipid peroxidation / antioxidant defense imbalance provide a background for immunopathological disorders, provoking radiation-related carcinogenesis. Impairment of functional network related to glutathione-dependent redox catalytic system decreases human antioxidant status, that necessitates specification of new promising methods correcting adaptation.

This paper discusses some problems possibly arising when approximating via Monte-Carlo simulations the distributions of goodness-of-fit test statistics based on the empirical distribution function. We argue that failing to re-estimate unknown parameters on each simulated Monte-Carlo sample — and thus avoiding to employ this information to build the test statistic — may lead to wrong, overly-conservative. Furthermore, we present some simple examples suggesting that the impact of this possible mistake may turn out to be dramatic and does not vanish as the sample size increases.

The effect of cyclic carbonation–decarbonation operating parameters on Zr-doped CaO sorbent CO2 uptake capacity evolution is examined. It is revealed that the capacity steady state value increases with the decrease in the carbonation temperature, CO2 concentration in the gas flow upon carbonation and with the increase in the heating rate from the carbonation to the decarbonation stages. The rise in decarbonation temperature leads to a dramatic decrease in the sorbent performance. It is found that if carbonation occurs at 630 °C in the gas flow containing 15 vol.% CO2 and decarbonation is carried out at 742 °C, the sorbent shows the highest values of the initial and steady state CO2 uptake capacity, namely, 10.7 mmol/g and 9.4 mmol/g, respectively.

This report aims to investigate a comparative effect of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) on recording heads due to sweeping directions of low-to-high and high-to-low frequencies. Four selected Quasi-Static Tester (QST) parameters; MR resistance, MR amplitude asymmetry, Barkhausen noise and Hysteresis, are used for monitoring the effect of EMI on Head Gimbal Assembly (HGA). It is undoubtedly found that the Asymmetry and Hysteresis parameters provide insufficient indication of EMI effect for both sweeping frequency directions. On the other hand, it is discovered that the sweeping direction of the low-to-high frequency is more effective to two test parameters; MR resistance and Barkhausen noise, than the other direction. The dramatic energy accumulation is possibly explained this phenomenon but this energy level is not high enough to cause the Hysteresis change.

We use the language of uninformative Bayesian prior choice to study the selection of appropriately simple effective models. We advocate for the prior which maximizes the mutual information between parameters and predictions, learning as much as possible from limited data. When many parameters are poorly constrained by the available data, we find that this prior puts weight only on boundaries of the parameter space. Thus, it selects a lower-dimensional effective theory in a principled way, ignoring irrelevant parameter directions. In the limit where there are sufficient data to tightly constrain any number of parameters, this reduces to the Jeffreys prior. However, we argue that this limit is pathological when applied to the hyperribbon parameter manifolds generic in science, because it leads to dramatic dependence on effects invisible to experiment.

Cuscuta australis is a widely distributed stem parasitic plant, infecting a variety of host plants. Its parasitism has a negative effect on the hosts, mainly due to the exhaustion of nutrients, thus negatively affecting the growth and development. However, recent studies indicated that the effect of parasitism may extend beyond the simple extraction of organic compounds, water, and minerals. In the present study, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana was used as a host for Cuscuta australis, to study the effect of the parasite on the photosynthetic parameters and the proteome after short-term infection. To test this, a highly sensitive portable photosynthesis system and gel-based MS/MS proteomics were employed. It was found that the parasite has a dramatic negative effect on the photosynthetic ability of the host, as well as causing the up-regulation of stress-related proteins. Simultaneously, proteins involved in both decreased permeability and loosening of the cell wall of the host were found to be up-regulated.

The article deals with specific features of perception of public speaking prosody. Speech intonation is an important component of oral text, a carrier of semantic meanings, and at the same time a means of demonstrating the emotionally expressive nature of expression. The nature and influence of public speaking depends not only on the adequately disclosed facts, but also on the very speech form of their presentation. The leading role in this process belongs to prosodic means, in which the peculiarities of public broadcasting are clearly revealed. The article examines the interrogatives of quasispontaneous public speakingmonologues from Shakespeare's plays, gathered from audio recordings of different periods of time, dating back to 30 years of the last century. This approach made it possible to compare the main features of interrogative rhetorical questions in the chronological plan. In the analysis of prosodic features of question structures, the inventory of their universal characteristics was distinguished, since there are certain normative, invariant prosodic models for the main types of questions. On the other hand, the melody should be attributed to the most variable parameters of interoactive constructions, so the most typical variants of intonational deviations were also analyzed.

The in vitro growth and multiplication of the erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium falciparum within Saimiri sciureus (squirrel monkey) red blood cells have been studied. Various parameters, such as the origin of the red blood cells and serum supplement, nature of the buffer, influence of the final pH of the medium, role of proteose peptone and glucose addition, were investigated. The selection of the best culture conditions led to the obtention of a reproducible in vitro growth of two parasite cycles in Saimiri erythrocytes, which is an useful achievement for in vitro studies. Our failure to establish a continuous culture line for longer than 19 days, could be explained by a dramatic increasing of osmotic fragility of the Saimiri red blood cells related to their small size.

Mixed metal oxide (MMO) is one of the widely utilized ceramic materials in various industries. In order to obtain high performance, the specific surface area of MMO should be controlled. Calcination of layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a versatile way to prepare MMO with homogeneous metal distribution and well-developed porosity. Although researchers found that the specific surface area of LDH-originated MMO was relatively high, it had not been systematically investigated how the surface area is controlled under a certain parameter. In this review, we summarized LDH-originated MMO with various starting composition, calcination temperature, and pore developing agent in terms of specific surface area and porosity. Briefly, it was represented that MMOs with Mg-Al components generally had higher specific surface area than Mg-Fe or Zn-Al components. Calcination temperature in the range 300–600 °C resulted in the high specific surface area, while upper or lower temperature reduced the values. Pore developing agent did not result in dramatic increase in MMO; however, the pore size distribution became narrower in the presence of pore developing agents.

In this work the tracer gas method using nitrous oxide as the tracer gas is implemented on a stationary two-stroke cycle, four-cylinder, fuel-injected large-bore natural gas engine. The engine is manufactured by Cooper-Bessemer, model number GMV-4TF. It is representative of the large bore natural gas stationary engine fleet currently in use by the natural gas industry for natural gas compression and power generation. Trapping efficiency measurements are carried out with the tracer gas method at various engine operating conditions, and used to evaluate the scavenging efficiency and trapped A/F ratio. Scavenging efficiency directly affects engine power and trapped A/F ratio has a dramatic impact on pollutant emissions. Engine operating conditions are altered through variations in boost pressure, speed, back pressure, and intake port restriction.

For complex surfaces with variable geometric features and high processing requirements, the current stage still uses more conservative machining cutting parameters to generate five-axis machining tool positions, which inevitably leads to some parts not to obtain the best cutting state, and the generated machining tool positions are poorly adapted, so it will produce a great processing deformation error seriously affects the surface quality. In addition, conservative cutting parameters applied to different geometric features of the surface area is very likely to induce dramatic changes in the machining process cutting forces and machine motion parameters, resulting in uneven distribution of machining errors and local super poor, seriously affecting the quality of machining. In five-axis machining, due to the introduction of two rotary axes, the tool vector can be rotated arbitrarily in the spatial domain. When machining complex surfaces, the distance between the tool center coordinates and the oscillation center or rotation center of the five-axis machine will change with the curvature of the surface. surface quality. Therefore, the optimization of tool cutting parameters in 5-axis simultaneous machining is a technical bottleneck that needs to be solved urgently.

Abstract This article challenges the postmodernist view—embodied in the work of such theorists as Baudrillard and Lyotard—that contemporary society is rife with meaninglessness and objectification. Rather, we will argue, meaning is creatively negotiated, among other ways, through narratives conveyed by the mass media. In examining the metanarrative underlying American news accounts, the drama of democracy, and the application of its various genres in the cases of Mikhail Gorbachev and Clarence Thomas, we aim to show that the dramatic categories of good and evil are ever-present parameters of morality in media accounts. The existence of such parameters demonstrates the robust nature of the social imagination as a resource to combat the despair offered by the postmodern perspective. (Sociology)

Ichthyological monitoring and the assessment of 16 physical and chemical parameters of the water environment were conducted at two localities on the Dyje River, Czech Republic, at different distances downstream from the Znojmo Reservoir (at 12 and 31 km) to reveal habitat alterations. Canonical correspondence analysis confirmed that differences in fish abundance between localities were influenced by different hydrological regimes characterized by discharge and flow velocities and also by water conductivity, which increased with the distance from the reservoir. The influence of chemical parameters of water related to water quality on fish assemblage structure was insignificant. The second locality (further from the reservoir) was characterised by substantial water shortage during the vegetation season. Changes in hydrological regime and the loss of connectivity in the Dyje River both connected with dam building and water shortage for irrigation have led to dramatic changes in the fish assemblage structure since the 1950s and the complete loss of common nase.

The paper presents the comparison of the energy absorption by perfect and amorphized nanorods under the cyclic loading. The calculations have been carried out with the molecular dynamic modeling. The cyclic loading is modeled by a periodical shift of a movable clamp along the X axis. The calculations are performed for the maximal clamp shift in respect to the equilibrium state, which corresponds to the relative deformation (equal to 0.3%). Frequencies varied from 0.085 THz to 10 THz. It has been discovered that both the dramatic growth of the maximal dispersion of atomic planes, and the dramatic growth of amplification of the maximal dispersion of atomic planes can be used as an index of the irreversible transformation of the crystal structure in the physical system differing from the perfect nanosized crystal. General behavior of the studied systems more depends on cyclic loading parameters than on the object crystal structure. Under the cyclic loading modeled with the aid of the periodical shift of the movable clamp, the frequency makes the critical impact on the results.

The structure and integrity of pulmonary acinar airways and their changes in different diseases are of great importance and interest to a broad range of physiologists and clinicians. The introduction of hyperpolarized gases has opened a door to in vivo studies of lungs with MRI. In this study we demonstrate that MRI-based measurements of hyperpolarized 3He diffusivity in human lungs yield quantitative information on the value and spatial distribution of lung parenchyma surface-to-volume ratio, number of alveoli per unit lung volume, mean linear intercept, and acinar airway radii—parameters that have been used by lung physiologists for decades and are accepted as gold standards for quantifying emphysema. We validated our MRI-based method in six human lung specimens with different levels of emphysema against direct unbiased stereological measurements. We demonstrate for the first time MRI images of these lung microgeometric parameters in healthy lungs and lungs with different levels of emphysema (mild, moderate, and severe). Our data suggest that decreases in lung surface area per volume at the initial stages of emphysema are due to dramatic decreases in the depth of the alveolar sleeves covering the alveolar ducts and sacs, implying dramatic decreases in the lung's gas exchange capacity. Our novel methods are sufficiently sensitive to allow early detection and diagnosis of emphysema, providing an opportunity to improve patient treatment outcomes, and have the potential to provide safe and noninvasive in vivo biomarkers for monitoring drug efficacy in clinical trials.

Pink peppercorns are among the most sophisticated condiments in the international cuisine. This culinary spice is obtained from dried fruits of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, a species native to South America. In this work, a methodology for the assessment of pink peppercorn quality under various drying conditions was defined. Experiments were performed in a pilot tray dryer, which ensured integrity of the product. A central composite rotatable design with 11 experiments was devised to study the influence of drying air temperature (35–75°C) and air velocity (0.3–0.9 m/s) on product quality, assessed by moisture content, color (CIELAB system), and volatile compounds. The essential oils of fresh and dried fruits were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Air temperature had the greatest influence on the quality parameters under study, while air velocity had no statistically significant effect. Considering all quality criteria, temperatures between 40 and 55°C provided the best compromise, yielding an adequate moisture content in the dried product without dramatic degradation of color and essential oil.

Laser cladding forming (LCF) is one of the new developed advanced manufacturing technologies. It integrates the advantages of rapid prototyping manufacturing and laser cladding surface modification, and three dimensional near-net-shape metal components can be directly manufactured without dies. Due to the dramatic heating and cooling characteristics of laser cladding forming process, the cladding layers is liable to crack, which greatly impedes the further and wider application of this technology. In this paper, numerical simulation on the three-dimensional transient temperature field and stress field of powder-delivery LCF has been carried out with parametric programming methods. The temperature field, temperature gradient and cooling rate of the laser cladding layer have been obtained. The influences of laser power and scanning speed on the temperature gradient and cooling rate of the cladding layers, especially the cooling rate of solid-liquid interface of the melt pool have been studied, which is tightly correlated with the cracking generation of the deposited layers. According to the simulation, process parameters were optimized to minimize the cracking possibility; LCF experiments have also been conducted to verify the simulation results.
