We show that the dramatic dependence of pressure on the parameters of the inter-molecular potential can be exploited to tune them to their best values. We support the viability of this strategy by a careful study of a fully diffusive Lennard–Jones fluid, showing that Lennard–Jones parameters can be easily optimized to better than a 1% accuracy.

The subtlety of eighteenth-century opera recitative, especially recitativo semplice, may escape most twenty-first century listeners and performers. Composers in late seventeenth-century Italy conceived of recitative as a music style that was flexible enough to accommodate the quick changes in characters' emotions and intents that the text of a continuously unfolding drama required. Essential elements of the style included preservation of the natural rhythm of speech and the free use of dissonance to heighten the impact of words. Although it underwent a number of changes in the following two centuries, recitative remained a significant vehicle for the dramatic action of character exposition, emotion, intent and physical interaction in opera. Composers developed an armamentarium of well-understood compositional devices for setting recitative text to music. We are remote from the period when recitative was a fresh, innovative and imaginative vehicle for the communication of drama through a synergetic combination of words and music. We cannot know definitively how recitative sounded or was performed, and we are in a vastly different social and cultural milieu. Moreover, we have heard several subsequent genres that involve a combination of music and words, as well as very different harmonic and melodic vocabularies. We need to make an informed search for subtle dramatic values in recitative in order to fully understand its potential. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was relatively common for more than one composer to set a libretto into an operatic work. This raises the question of whether, by a differential application of the compositional devices forming the musical language of recitative, composers could imply different dramatic parameters from the same text. In this study the recitatives in two settings of Gennaro Antonio Federico's short comic libretto: La Serva Padrona are chosen for comparison. The settings are by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1733) and Gio vanni Paisiello (1781). A central tenet of the study is that it is valid to examine the creation of drama which is immanent in the written music as a separate issue from how drama is created in performance. The study provides a detailed taxonomy of compositional devices used for setting recitative, derived from eclectic sources in relevant literature. These come under the broad headings of rhythmic, melodic, harmonic and key-related devices. The application of compositional devices in several excerpts of recitative from the two works is analysed and compared. The analysis strongly suggests that the composers have implied different characters, with contrasting emotions and intents, through their settings of the recitative texts. A different relationship between the two principal characters is also implied. The methodology developed for this study may be of interest to those wishing to better appreciate the musical language and dramatic function of recitative in eighteenth-century opera. It may be a useful addition to the available information on performance practice and may help persons who listen to these works, or who are involved in their performance, to understand the composers' interpretations of characters and of their actions more fully.

The development of motor skills in the first two years of life are dramatic, and then become more subtle with time. Chapter 4 describes these changes, and explains how these changes take place. Analysis is done via neuro-maturational theories, information processing, and cognitive terms as well as more recent ecological and dynamical systems viewpoints. The bidirectional influence of other faculties like embodied cognition and movement show that motor development does not occur in isolation. Movement skills are essential to daily life and influence our social, emotional, and cognitive being. This process of evolution and refinement is a complex, dynamic, self-organizing system. Theoretical explanations of motor development involve the transaction of children’s resources, the environmental context, and the task at hand. Not all children develop typically, although the influencing parameters are the same for all; rather, it is the metrics within the parameters that differ.

AbstractThe recent rapid modernization of life in the Arab region has led to major changes in the lifestyle and attitude of Arab people. This has subsequently resulted in an obvious change in the disease burden profile where the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) exert a huge burden in the region. The main factors that have been attributed to this increase in NCDs are the increased incidence of obesity, physical inactivity, stressful busy life, smoking, and dietary habits. Cancer is among the top NCDs that has increased at an alarming pace in the past ten years in the region. It is projected that there will be a 1.8-fold increase in cancer incidence by 2030 among Arabs. Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is among one of the most common cancers that showed a dramatic increase in annual incidence rate among Arabs. Despite the fact that the figures reported for colorectal cancer among Arabs is lower than that for western countries, the incidence is increasing in this region. Across the cancer continuum, CRC care in the region is up to date as it follows international guidelines from board-certified healthcare providers. The CRC screening system is not well developed and not well accepted by the society due to several religious, cultural, unfamiliarity, and distrust issues. This explains the advanced stage of CRC diagnosis in the region that subsequently leads to unfavorable outcomes. This chapter highlights the incidence of CRC and its clinicopathological parameters with molecular profile and preventive measures in the region.

This chapter argues that Athenian democratic institutions were characterised by discursive parameters which conditioned the behaviour of political actors and the construction of democratic ideology. The state funeral for the war dead led orators to produce an idealised image of the city to construct an imagined community. The litigants in the lawcourts were bound by the Heliastic Oath to couch their arguments in accordance with justice and specific legal charges. The speakers in the Assembly were expected to address issues of advantage and discuss the best policy for the city, while in the Council the focus on justice and advantage coexisted in accordance with the Bouleutic Oath. The dramatic festivals enabled the tragedians to pose questions on and reaffirm shared values and beliefs. The discussion of the discursive parameters of Athenian institution in this chapter also illuminates some characteristics of Athenian democratic ideology, most notably its constructive (rather than negative) function, its normative value, and its bidirectional nature which actively involved both the elite (as orators, playwrights, or chorēgoi) and the mass (through participation in ritual, voting, clamouring, providing councillors, or manning choruses).

On December 20, the president invited the parties to the White House to hear a first version of his peace plan. He still wanted us to conduct one more round of talks to help him fine-tune his initially flexible peace parameters. The natural tendency of the teams, however, was to impact the president’s final peace outline by sticking to their maximalist positions. I thought otherwise, and advanced ideas on borders and the Temple Mount that went far beyond our traditional comfort zone. My proposals had “a dramatic influence on Clinton’s calculations.” On December 23, we returned to the White House to hear the president’s last, definitive, and nonnegotiable peace parameters, the most equitable and balanced peace plan ever offered by an American president that was, moreover, the natural outcome of the most laborious peace negotiations ever conducted by Israelis and Palestinians.

The authors have compiled published information on taxonomy, distribution, status, statistics, fisheries, bycatch, biologic, and ecologic parameters mainly on food and feeding habits and reproductive biology of elasmobranchs along the Tunisian coasts. This bibliographic analysis shows that cartilaginous species, including sharks and rays are by far the most endangered group of marine fish, with 63 species, about 53% of all are critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable. Overfishing, fishing practices, and habitat degradation are leading to dramatic declines of these species. Biologic parameters concern a few species primarily in the Gulf of Gabes. Therefore, recommendations to fill gaps in order to protect and manage elasmobranchs stocks are proposed in this chapter.

The process of modelling and replicating extreme fire behaviour like junction fire is essential for understanding the phenomena associated with extreme fires. Numerical simulations of junction fires, replicating laboratory-scale experiments, with no imposed wind, were performed for a shrub fuel bed with slopes ranging from 0° to 30°. The simulations of junction fires were conducted for two junction angles 30° and 45°. For each scenario, the sensitivity to a range of numerical and physical parameters was investigated. The rate of spread (ROS) is a key parameter for assessing risks from vegetation fires. Experimental spreading junction fires, conducted at laboratory scale at Coimbra University (Portugal), were simulated using FIRESTAR3D - a three-dimensional physics-based fire model. To ensure the robustness of simulations, sensitivity analyses were carried out by varying the grid resolution, domain size, different fuel characteristics, as well as some of the thermo-physical parameters. The corresponding simulations were carried out using a single and two descriptions levels of the shrub: the vegetation was represented using only one cylindrical-shaped solid-fuel type (excelsior fuel using the characteristic parameters for Erica shrub), or two fuel by adding the contribution of twigs of various diameters up to 6 mm while keeping the same packing ratio. Finally, the validation of FIRESTAR3D simulations was achieved through the comparison of predicted and measured ROS values. The experimental trends of the compared quantities were well reproduced by the simulations. Accelerating and decelerating propagation phases were observed in all simulations, with a dependence on the slope angle, while the maximum rate of spread depends critically on the junction angle. As it was the case of other wildfires simulated by FIRESTAR3D, it was found that this fully-physical model is capable of simulating junction fire propagation. There are several processes associated with the development of a junction fire behaviour, in which dramatic changes in fire behaviour can occur with little change in various fuel, weather and topographical parameters. In a subsequent study, we aim to develop an understanding of junction fire behaviour taking into account essential parameters that affect the behaviour, namely: slope, junction angle, and driving wind velocity.

The Palestinians, however, declared a total war on each and every aspect of the plan. Nor was the American performance particularly edifying. They gave in to Arafat’s irritating pressure for “clarifications,” and let him meet the president ten days after the deadline for an answer. Calls from world leaders pleading with him to give Clinton a yes and Arab envoys from Saudi Arabia and Egypt offering him their respective leaders’ encouragement were all ignored. Arafat’s reservations amounted to a resounding no. The Americans’ peace hopes faded away, and they shifted their attention to a “reduction of violence” or to some kind of presidential declaration that would enshrine the achievements of the process.

This chapter examines the extent to which The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne engaged with politics. Beginning with Sterne’s fleeting involvement in Whig political journalism, the chapter shows how these early experiences as a writer coincided with dramatic changes to the organization of partisanship and the emergence of cynicism towards the political establishment as such. Tristram Shandy took shape, the chapter goes on to show, in relation both to the changing parameters of political activity and to a growing impulse to escape from politics altogether. Taking cues from a Dublin-published pamphlet that imagined Tristram entering into the fray of political activity, the chapter brings into focus the diverse political trajectories that Sterne incorporated into his fiction—and the ways they were subsequently closed down or rerouted by the ongoing composition and reception of his works and with the onset of his sentimental reputation.

Abstract The development of a primitive-variable finite difference computer code is discussed, with application to a turbulent swirling nonreacting flow in a typical combustor. Primary air enters through the main inlet, and a secondary annular inlet in the outer wall is permitted through which secondary air flows. Parameters of special interest include the secondary to primary velocity ratio, primary swirl and contraction angles, and secondary swirl and upstream angles. Combustor flowfield predictions are given to illustrate the effects of these parameters on the flowfield (velocities and turbulence levels), and the dramatic effects are illustrated via velocity profiles and streamline patterns.

The effects of friction stir processing (FSP) parameters, i.e., rotation and travel rates of the processing tool, on the texture modification and ductility enhancement of an Mg alloy AZ31B were investigated. With the systematic change in processing parameters as a function of the Zener-Hollomon parameter, a transition of different crystallographic texture was observed through neutron diffraction measurement, which correlated well with the changes in deformation and recrystallization mechanism activated during the processing. The variation in the texture leads to dramatic changes in the strength and ductility in the stir zone of the processed Mg plate. A maximum of three-fold increase in the ductility was achieved in the Mg alloy through FSP when the Zener-Hollomon parameter exceeds 1012 s−1 which is associated with low rotation speed and high travel speed processing conditions.

All numerical models of friction damped bladed arrays require knowledge of contact-friction parameters, which are established either through direct frictional measurements, done with the help of a separate single contact test arrangement, or by fine tuning the parameters in the numerical model of the real damping device and comparing the experimental response of a damped blade against its computed response. Recent results from direct measurements on underplatform dampers and the subsequent cross-comparison of experimental and numerical results have put into evidence several features which are usually neglected in FE models of damper-blade systems: – markedly different friction coefficients at different contact points; – friction coefficients evolving with time and cycle number towards a stable shape, in a systematic and repeatable manner with dramatic consequences on the shape of the hysteresis cycle and on dissipated energy; – particular cases where minimal variations in the friction coefficients lead to gross changes of the damper behavior; Identifying the contact parameters to assure the best match between model and experimental results becomes crucial to guarantee that the validated damper model will produce the correct cyclic forces on the blades during vibrational motion. While the tuning process described in the previous papers was a search based on the progressive refinement whose results depended on the operator’s ability to match different patterns of the model and experimental results, this paper dwells on a more objective and controllable method based on properly chosen indicators. The latter method is based on a sampling technique (Latin Hyper-cube) which produces a large number of solutions (in the present case 5000) on the basis of randomized extractions of contact parameters (in the present case 5) between given boundaries. An advantage of this method is a systematic exploration of the influence of each input contact parameter on the collection of output indicators, considered acceptable according to predetermined criteria. The main indicators suited for the purpose are three, i.e., the relative errors on the real and imaginary parts of the HBM complex spring equivalent to the hysteresis cycle and a measure of shape similarity between the experimental and simulated cycle. The paper shows the selection procedure which has been adopted to produce the final set of eligible solutions, which are further reduced by applying a secondary indicator based on the similarity of a kinematical parameter. In this paper this parameter is chosen to be a measure of the shape similarity of the damper rotation during the hysteresis cycle.

Abstract Perhaps the most dramatic example of surprising behavior when circulation is imposed on a combustion-driven flow is the fire whirl, where the burning gases form a tall slender column. Relatively few studies have addressed the influence of circulation on the development of combustion-driven flows. Three dimensionless parameters characterize this interplay: the Froude number, the swirl number and the Reynolds number. It is surprising that for most studies, even with plausible assumptions concerning the experiments, not enough information is given to determine the values of these parameters. We will experimentally reconstruct these studies in an effort to characterize parametrically these interactions. Both buoyancy-driven and momentum-driven combustion processes will be investigated to determine the influence of circulation. Theoretical studies will occur in conjunction to provide the most complete parametric investigation.

This paper explores the effects of two parameters—operation voltage and the distance between the lance and electrode—on the repulsion process of a Stand-Alone Lance, a second-generation Nanoinjection tool used to inject DNA into egg cells for genetic purposes. Using a mathematical computer model to simulate the motion of the DNA during repulsion from the lance and into the cell, the results are quantified by the average DNA travel time and the electric field strength, which relates to the electroporation envelope. It is found that voltage has a very strong effect, while changing distance yields much less dramatic results. Specific ideal values are recommended for the magnitude and duration of the voltage pulse to successfully repel DNA into the cell.

Abstract A computer code has been developed to simulate the combustion flowfield of an axisymmetric jet flame impinging normally on to a flat plate. Premixed oxygen and acetylene emerges from the jet nozzle, and complexities include turbulence and high temperature chemical kinetics. In CVD diamond synthesis, parameters of interest include the fuel-oxygen ratio and the distance from the heat nozzle to the surface. Combustion flow field predictions are given for acetylene and oxygen flames (all fuel rich), axisymmetric-vertical impingement on an adiabatic surface to show the effects of varying the nozzle-substrate separation distance, nozzle size, overall equivalence ratio and flow rate on the flowfield and substrate temperature. These have been shown to have dramatic effects on the rate of diamond growth on the surface.

Abstract Different from land-based reactors, floating reactors are affected by the ocean condition. Numerical simulation is conducted to study the effects of heaving and rolling motion on typical floating nuclear reactor (FNR) under rated power operation by ARSAC code with ocean condition calculation module. The calculation results have shown that heaving motion can cause the periodic fluctuations in the flow rate of both the primary and secondary loops in FNR. The amplitude of heaving motion is the main influence factor on the flow rate fluctuation of the primary loop while the effect of heaving motion period is limited. Rolling motion can cause the out-phase flow fluctuation in the two symmetric loops of the primary system. However, the rolling motion has limited impact on the core flow rate and cannot cause dramatic changes of system parameters at the core. Within the range of motion parameters used in this paper, heaving and rolling motion cannot have a substantial impact on the safe operation of FNR under rated power operation.

Abstract Micro-pumps utilizing no-moving-parts (NMP) valves, driven by a piezoelectric element bonded to a flexible membrane have been developed by a number of research groups (Olsson et al, 1995a; Forster et al, 1995; Gerlach and Wurmus, 1995). Recently, pump heads of over 7 m of H2O have been achieved (Olsson et al, 1996). However, no systematic methods have been reported that predict pump performance and guide the design of optimally performing pumps. We have developed a linearized dynamic system model that provides a detailed understanding of the relationship between a realistic set of system parameters and pump performance. These parameters include flow characteristics of the NMP valves, characteristics of the working fluid, pump geometry, and materials used in fabrication. Utilization of the model as a design tool, resulted in a dramatic improvement from previous “flexible” pump designs with maximum heads of approximately 0.24 m of H2O to a “stiff” design with a maximum head of 4.75 m of H2O, a twenty-fold increase in performance. Corresponding flow rates increased from 85 to 750 μl/min, a nine-fold increase.

Powder-based additive manufacturing technologies introduce severe variations in microstructure in terms of grain size and aspect ratio that, coupled with porosity, can result in dramatic effects on the functional (mechanical, thermal, fatigue, fracture etc.) performance of as-produced parts. In the context of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), it is essential develop a computationally efficient approach for generating synthetic microstructural morphologies that reflect these process-induced features. In the present paper, we employ two methodologies for computing the evolution of metal solidification at the microstructural level as a function of process parameters associated with additive manufacturing. The first method is the Continuum Diffuse Interface Model (CDM) applied to an arbitrary material system, and the second, the Multi-Phase Field Model (MPFM) applied to pure nickel (Ni). We present examples of microstructures generated by these methods within the context of additive manufacturing.

Resistance spot welding is widely used for joining sheet metal materials in the automotive industry. Most of the existing resistance spot welding systems are single-phase AC-based, and with constant current control. The medium frequency DC (MFDC) system with constant heat control (CHC) is new technology in the resistance spot welding industry. This system promises dramatic improvement on the spot weld quality. However, many of the CHC features are still not known and need to be explored. This paper presents an experimental study on a new MFDC/CHC spot welding system. The goal is to characterize the MFDC/CHC welding process in terms of the process parameters, including the target energy level, force, and welding time. Real time process signals such as force, current, and tip voltage were also collected and analyzed to compare with the traditional spot welding process.

The auroral activity indices AU, AL, AE, introduced into geophysics at the beginning of the space era, although they have certain drawbacks, are still widely used to monitor geomagnetic activity at high latitudes. The AU index reflects the intensity of the eastern electric jet, while the AL index is determined by the intensity of the western electric jet. There are many regression relationships linking the indices of magnetic activity with a wide range of phenomena observed in the Earth's magnetosphere and atmosphere. These relationships determine the importance of monitoring and predicting geomagnetic activity for research in various areas of solar-terrestrial physics. The most dramatic phenomena in the magnetosphere and high-latitude ionosphere occur during periods of magnetospheric substorms, a sensitive indicator of which is the time variation and value of the AL index. Currently, AL index forecasting is carried out by various methods using both dynamic systems and artificial intelligence. Forecasting is based on the close relationship between the state of the magnetosphere and the parameters of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). This application proposes an algorithm for describing the process of substorm formation using an instrument in the form of an Elman-type ANN by reconstructing the AL index using the dynamics of the new integral parameter we introduced. The use of an integral parameter at the input of the ANN makes it possible to simulate the structure and intellectual properties of the biological nervous system, since in this way an additional realization of the memory of the prehistory of the modeled process is provided.

Over the last decade there has been a dramatic shift in global agricultural practice. The increase in human population, especially in underdeveloped arid and semiarid regions of the world, poses unprecedented challenges to production of an adequate and economically feasible food supply to undernourished populations. Furthermore, the increased living standard in many industrial countries has created a strong demand for high-quality, out-of-season vegetables and fruits as well as for ornamentals such as cut and potted flowers and bedding plants. As a response to these imminent challenges and demands and because of a ban on methyl bromide fumigation of horticultural field soils, soilless greenhouse production systems are regaining increased worldwide attention. Though there is considerable recent empirical and theoretical research devoted to specific issues related to control and management of soilless culture production systems, a comprehensive approach that quantitatively considers all relevant physicochemical processes within the growth substrates is lacking. Moreover, it is common practice to treat soilless growth systems as static, ignoring dynamic changes of important physicochemical and hydraulic properties due to root and microbial growth that require adaptation of management practices throughout the growth period. To overcome these shortcomings, the objectives of this project were to apply thorough physicochemical characterization of commonly used greenhouse substrates in conjunction with state-of-the-art numerical modeling (HYDRUS-3D, PARSWMS) to not only optimize management practices (i.e., irrigation frequency and rates, fertigation, container size and geometry, etc.), but to also “engineer” optimal substrates by mixing organic (e.g., coconut coir) and inorganic (e.g., perlite, pumice, etc.) base substrates and modifying relevant parameters such as the particle (aggregate) size distribution. To evaluate the proposed approach under commercial production conditions, characterization and modeling efforts were accompanied by greenhouse experiments with tomatoes. The project not only yielded novel insights regarding favorable physicochemical properties of advanced greenhouse substrates, but also provided critically needed tools for control and management of containerized soilless production systems to provide a stress-free rhizosphere environment for optimal yields, while conserving valuable production resources. Numerical modeling results provided a more scientifically sound basis for the design of commercial greenhouse production trials and selection of adequate plant-specific substrates, thereby alleviating the risk of costly mistrials.

Both the genes and cDNA sequences encoding the b-subunits of black carp LH and FSH were isolated, cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis of the bcFSHb and LHb5'flanking regions revealed that the promoter region of both genes contains canonical TATA sequences, 30 bp and 17 bp upstream of the transcription start site of FSHb and LHb genes, respectively. In addition, they include several sequences of cis-acting motifs, required for inducible and tissue-specific transcriptional regulation: the gonadotropin-specific element (GSE), GnRH responsive element (GRE), half sites of estrogen and androgen response elements, cAMP response element, and AP1. Several methods have been employed by the Israeli team to purify the recombinant b subunits (EtOH precipitation, gel filtration and lentil lectin). While the final objective to produce pure recombinantGtH subunits has not yet been achieved, we have covered much ground towards this goal. The black carp ovary showed a gradual increase in both mass and oocyte diameter. First postvitellogenic oocytes were found in 5 yr old fish. At this age, the testes already contained spermatozoa. The circulating LH levels increased from 0.5 ng/ml in 4 yr old fish to >5ng/ml in 5 yr old fish. In vivo challenge experiments in black carp showed the initial LH response of the pituitary to GnRH in 4 yr old fish. The response was further augmented in 5 yr old fish. The increase in estradiol level in response to gonadotropic stimulation was first noted in 4 yr old fish but this response was much stronger in the following year. In vivo experiments on the FSHb and LHb mRNA levels in response to GnRH were carried out on common carp as a model for synchronom spawning cyprinids. These experiments showed the prevalence of FSHP in maturing fish while LHP mRNA was prevalent in mature fish, especially in females. The gonadal fat-pad was found to originate from the retroperitoneal mesoderm and not from the genital ridge, thus differing from that reported in certain amphibians This tissue possibly serves as the major source of sex steroids in the immature black carp. However, such a function is taken over by the developing gonads in 4 yr old fish. In the striped bass, we described the ontogeny of the neuro-endocrine parameters along the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis during the first four years of life, throughout gonadal development and the onset of puberty. We also described the responsiveness of the reproductive axis to long-term hormonal manipulations at various stages of gonadal development. Most males reached complete sexual maturity during the first year of life. Puberty was initiated during the third year of life in most females, but this first reproductive cycle did not lead to the acquisition of full sexual maturity. This finding indicates that more than one reproductive cycle may be required before adulthood is reached. Out of the three native GnRHs present in striped bass, only sbGnRH and cGnRH II increased concomitantly with the progress of gonadal development and the onset of puberty. This finding, together with data on GtH synthesis and release, suggests that while sbGnRH and cGnRH II may be involved in the regulation of puberty in striped bass, these neuropeptides are not limiting factors to the onset of puberty. Plasma LH levels remained low in all fish, suggesting that LH plays only a minor role in early gonadal development. This hypothesis was further supported by the finding that experimentally elevated plasma LH levels did not result in the induction of complete ovarian and testicular development. The acquisition of complete puberty in 4 yr old females was associated with a rise in the mRNA levels of all GtH subunit genes, including a 218-fold increase in the mRNA levels of bFSH. mRNA levels of the a and PLH subunits increased only 11- and 8-fold, respectively. Although data on plasma FSH levels are unavailable, the dramatic increase in bFSH mRNA suggests a pivotal role for this hormone in regulating the onset and completion of puberty in striped bass. The hormonal regulation of the onset of puberty and of GtH synthesis and release was studied by chronic administration of testosterone (T) and/or an analog of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (G). Sustained administration of T+G increased the mRNA levels of the PLH subunit to the values characteristic of sexually mature fish, and also increased the plasma levels of LH. However, these changes did not result in the acceleration of sexual maturation. The mRNA levels of the bFSH subunit were slightly stimulated, but remained about 1/10 of the values characteristic of sexually mature fish. It is concluded that the stimulation of FSH gene expression and release does not lead to the acceleration of sexual maturity, and that the failure to sufficiently stimulate the bFSH subunit gene expression may underlie the inability of the treatments to advance sexual maturity. Consequently, FSH is suggested to be the key hormone to the initiation and completion of puberty in striped bass. Future efforts to induce precocious puberty in striped bass should focus on understanding the regulation of FSH synthesis and release and on developing technologies to induce these processes. Definite formulation of hormonal manipulation to advance puberty in the striped bass and the black carp seems to be premature at this stage. However, the project has already yielded a great number of experimental tools of DNA technology, slow-release systems and endocrine information on the process of puberty. These systems and certain protocols have been already utilized successfully to advance maturation in other fish (e.g. grey mullet) and will form a base for further study on fish puberty.
