Повний текст джерелаThe word "modern" is associated, mostly in a positive way, by society, things and people who have excelled in various fields and have made new discoveries for the communities from which they come. The concept of "modernity" lies however on a more subjective vision. What does it mean? This thesis, whose subject is: "The challenge of Progress in the Latino-American societies of the twentieth century: the case of Doña Barbara from Romulo Gallegos", will focus on this Venezuelan contemporary novel from the twentieth century, whose main character is a cruel-corrupted and greedy woman. This doctorate research will focus on the concepts of evolution, modernity and progress from an ethnological point of view, as also political, literary and territorial aspects, largely covering then the themes portrayed in the novel by Gallegos among others novels related to this PhD’s main theme. The concepts of society, developed world, primitive "Americas" and so on, will obviously be addressed during this work, as well as the presentation of the author: Romulo Gallegos. In conclusion of my previous Master's thesis, based on the contrasts of both the "modern" and “primitive” world, I came to end the work with the following question: “The concept of comfort in its plurality did it not withdrawn us away from the primitive roots and human beings that represent our life’s true essence?” This is indeed the conclusion, to which the protagonist arrives to, in Los pasos perdidos by Cuban author Alejo Carpentier, a novel that I had work on with dissimilar subjects for my Master 1 and 2. Now, for this PhD’s thesis, my research will focus on the meanings and applications for Latino-American societies, on the following terms: evolution, progress and modernity and I’ll start the research with the novel: Doña Barbara, as the perfect example of confusion, anarchy, despotism, and injustice; in fact so many words that are very representative of our current societies’ working mode

"La dualidad Civilización /Barbarie en la selva de José Eustasio Rivera: La vorágine, los llanos de Rómulo Gallegos: Doña Bárbara y Las Pampas de Ricardo Guiraldes: Don Segundo Sombra." Повний текст джерелаThe main objective of this thesis was to conduct an assessment of duality civilization / barbarism in the novel of José Eustasio Rivera: the maelstrom; by Rómulo Gallegos: Dona Barbara and in the novel by Ricardo Güiraldes: Don Segundo Sombra. I was to carrying out a comparative study of all the three novels. To carry out this analysis, I used two literary methodologies, namely; the sociocritique and Narratology. This thesis is divided into three parts and each part is subdivided. Through them are found an introduction consisting of: a background, specific objectives, justification of this work, its scope and limitations . The first part of this thesis develops the four fundamental areas of the work. The first point, analyzes the historical and ideological background of these concepts and the question of the Indies around the concept of "barbarian" which was one of their main bases of this work. And, also emphasizes the total confusion which was made around the sense of the barbaric concept. In the second point, an attempt is made to Bartolomé De las Casas, to distinguish the difference and inferiority. The third point Clarifies the modern concepts of civilization/barbarism in Latin America and explains how this part of the world is adopting new formulations such as modern dichotomy between civilization (Europe / West) and barbarism (non-Europe / not West). The last but not the least point exposed the dark, barbaric side of Western civilization in colonization. And complain where advanced scientific technology and chemistry are able to overcome the barbaric acts of human sacrifices by indigenous cultures. The second part of this thesis contains three main points which is again divided into subtitles. It is a panoramic study of the works that make up the corpus and its authors, developed respectively in the three works under the themes of: the career of the author, plot, characters, narration, space, form, language and time. The third and last part of this thesis examines critically the central axis of the research and contains three main points which is divided into other subtitles. The first point, examines how nature, notably the plains of Casanare and the Amazon rainforest are the space conducive to the development of the barbaric culture and contribute to the barbarizacion of those who live in those areas. It also Identifies Barbaros civilized characters who commit acts in the play. This point also makes a critical analysis of the vision of the Narrator about the Indians and underscores that, the city in ‘The maelstrom’ is the basis of civilization with Arturo Cova as the symbol of the meeting of civilization with barbarism. This point further analysis finding positive acts in the novel to show that not all the acts in the novel of Rivera are acts Barbaros. There are other civilized acts which do not only come from urban characters but also of the Indians who Arturo is considered as animals. On the second point it becomes clear that education is offered as the inevitable basis for civilization, according to Romulo Gallegos. Then analyzed as the plain, is the space for the development of barbarism which becomes a place of civilization. Also here explores the symbolism of the characters in the novel to highlight what kind of person represents each character in the play. This point also highlights the different qualifications attributed to Doña Bárbara. It also wondered if Gallegos novel isn't a macho novel. Treat all ills Dona Barbara for being a woman and having a man's character. And the analysis of this point ends in the study of ambivalences in the novel to emphasize the dual facet of the characters; Even Doña Bárbara. The third and final point, defines the Gaucho and shows how the novel by Guiraldes is a hymn to the barbarian, claiming the field values, traditional values through his character Don Segundo Sombra the gaucho. It also underscores that the novel by Guiraldes can be understood as a nationalist discourse, the embodiment of the spirit that encourages every Argentine, fulfills the quest for a national identity. The pampa here is offered and becomes a suitable place for the acquisition of the gauchesque values. And it ends with the study of the ambivalence in the actor Fabio Cáceres.
